All right, welcome to the Saloon.
Speaker 1 (00:50):
We are in a brand new podcast studio just steps
away from the forty nine ers practice facility. We're bringing
you all the latest updates from forty nine ers training camp.
I'm sitting down today with forty nine Ers Insideratajzeus.
Speaker 2 (01:02):
Thanks for joining me. What do you think of the
new podcast setup?
Speaker 3 (01:05):
It's awesome. Yeah, I love it.
Speaker 4 (01:06):
I love it like the helmets yours over there.
Speaker 3 (01:09):
So yeah, everything is nice.
Speaker 1 (01:11):
I think what's really cool about it is that we're
just steps away from the SAP performance facilities.
Speaker 2 (01:15):
So we could go from reporting on practice into.
Speaker 1 (01:18):
Some press conferences right in here into the podcast studio
to deliver are updates to the faithful. Now, before we
get into some camp updates, I wanted to go over
what I think is one of the coolest campaigns of
any NFL season, and that's the NFL Top one hundred.
Speaker 2 (01:32):
What's really cool about this list.
Speaker 1 (01:33):
Is that players vote on their teammates and they vote
on other players throughout the league on who they think
is the best in the NFL. Now to get started,
it was first announced that running back Christian McCaffrey landed
at number seventy three on the list. I wanted to
hear your thoughts on where Christian mccaffe landed and what
you think of this ranking system overall.
Speaker 4 (01:54):
Well, first of all, in a normal season, obviously last year,
you know how he went for Christian McCaffery battling through
different injuries. But if he had a full season, a
full season, obviously he has to be like top ten
at least or at least top twenty, right, But I
think it's still really really nice that even though he
didn't play much in twenty twenty four, he still has
(02:16):
the respect of other players around the NFL.
Speaker 2 (02:18):
Like you said, yeah, I love it.
Speaker 1 (02:20):
I mean I think last year he came in at
number three, so not even top ten, I think top
five player. But again, he only played in four games
last season and every year, this top ten or top
one hundred list is made a pact based on the
season before. So again played in only four games, but
in those four games, he came in at the top
(02:41):
one hundred because he saw two hundred and two rushing
yards one hundred and forty six receiving yards. So heading
into this year now, he's looking great. As he said,
he's feeling healthy and there's a lot of expectations for
him in twenty twenty five. What have you seen from
him out at training camp. It's pretty different from what
we saw during the twenty twenty four season, right.
Speaker 4 (02:59):
Yes, totally different. He looks amazing out there. He obviously
looks like Christian McCaffrey. That's what his teammate says, and
that's what we see every day he comes out. Obviously
they have a plan for him. You know, Kyle Shanahan
has playing, He's taken some rest days along with both
Trend Williams, and basically I love how Kyle Shanahan explains that.
(03:19):
He always say, we have to protect Christian from himself.
Speaker 2 (03:22):
Run himself.
Speaker 1 (03:24):
Yeah, there's been regularly scheduled rest days for a lot
of the vets. Like you mentioned, Bosa Trent Williams, Christian
McCaffrey being one of them, and so he's on that
acclimating period where resting him where we can putting him
in when things get more intense. I'm sure when joint
practices come up, we're going to be seeing a lot
of him. So that's going to be exciting to see now.
Next on the list was defensive lineman Nick Bosa, who
(03:46):
was unveiled at number fifty seven. His thoughts on Bosa's
placement here, He also had a pretty good season last year.
Speaker 4 (03:52):
Yeah, I think so. I think he had a great year.
I think he should be higher. Obviously the players vote
on it, but maybe it has to do a lot
with how the team did in general. I guess, yeah,
that would be my hypothesis here. But yeah, he's I
think he's a great player that deserves to be always
at least the top twenty, top ten, like as Christian McCaffrey.
Speaker 3 (04:16):
So I think he should be much higher.
Speaker 4 (04:18):
But it's still nice that obviously both had to be
in there.
Speaker 1 (04:22):
Yeah, he got recognition from the league. He earned his
fifth Pro Bowl selection last.
Speaker 4 (04:27):
Year, so I remember he had sorry, but I remember
he had hit dealt with that injury, remember, so maybe
that had to do a little bit with it. He
played more than McCaffrey, but I guess that that had
to do a little bit.
Speaker 1 (04:39):
Definitely, he made it to the top one hundred, which
is huge respect amongst the league. He earned his fifth
Pro Bowl selection last season, so again we saw a
bit of him shine last season, but there's huge expectations
for him heading into the twenty twenty five season.
Speaker 2 (04:52):
Just like Christian McCaffrey.
Speaker 1 (04:54):
Now just announced this morning, left tackle Trent Williams made
this year's list at number forty five. I feel like
we're bound to hear his name on this top one
hundred list every single year. He has so much respect
amongst the league. I believe last year he was also
in the top ten somewhere. So what was your reaction
to seeing Trent make this year's list again?
Speaker 3 (05:15):
Yeah, again, I think he should be higher.
Speaker 4 (05:17):
But also with Chrazid McCaffrey, with Bolsa, and we we
know that Trent miss some time with injuries.
Speaker 3 (05:25):
You know, injuries was a big thing.
Speaker 4 (05:27):
You're unfortunately for the forty nine ers and some of
the of the team's biggest stars. But yeah, Trent Williams
is very consistent. I mean you look at his filter
Hall of Fame career, I mean he's a fulter Hall
of Famer. You look at his career and everything he does,
he's the best in the business.
Speaker 5 (05:43):
Yeah.
Speaker 1 (05:44):
I think if you talk to any d ligneman in
the league, anyone on the defense, they're going to say
that Trent Williams is one of the hardest players to
go against, and so he has got a ton of
respect from all the players from around the league. And
I'm really happy to see him on this list again.
I feel like he's a lock every single year, So
glad to see his name.
Speaker 2 (06:03):
Now.
Speaker 1 (06:03):
The faithful, they should keep their eyes and ears open
because this campaign isn't over yet.
Speaker 2 (06:08):
We're still inching.
Speaker 1 (06:09):
Closer to the top of the list, hoping to still
see a few more Niners on that list. So faithful,
make sure you stay tuned because we will be reporting
back if we see any more names pop up on
the list.
Speaker 2 (06:19):
I'm excited to see.
Speaker 1 (06:20):
Where we go closer to the top now that I
feel like that set a really good stage for how
we could talk about training camp. Is it's been a
few weeks now, would have been some of your biggest
takeaways from training camp so.
Speaker 2 (06:33):
Far this year.
Speaker 4 (06:34):
Yeah, we're now in the third week now preparing for
the Broncs. Right decided that they're coming in on Thursday
also for joint practices.
Speaker 3 (06:41):
So so definitely the rookies.
Speaker 4 (06:43):
The rookies, Brianna, I think when you look at them,
for example, on offense, on deferense, for example, starting with offense, right,
you see a guy like Jordan Watkins, I mean he
has been impressive catching some deep passes from property mc jones.
I think he has been very consistent. Then when you
look on the defensive side of the ball, you guys,
(07:06):
you got guys like C. J. West dominating on one
on once and also Salah mentioned on the on the
Thursday press conference that he likes what he's doing also
against the running games.
Speaker 3 (07:19):
So things are.
Speaker 4 (07:20):
Going well for cju Is Upton Stout, I mean Upton
stat is a guy that the coaches, the players when
they have other press conferences, they always mention him, and
he said when he spoke to the media that he's
very competitive. He said, I'm competitive if we're playing chess,
I'm competitive if we're going to the grocery store, to
the grocery store and yeah, you can see that on
(07:42):
the field. In fact, on Tuesday, on Tuesday practice on
the eleven and eleven, I was already like getting ready
to write my on my notes, nice past from rock
Party to Christian McCaffrey, and then Stout was able to
catch up with Christian and he was able to defend
that passed that that was amazing.
Speaker 1 (08:01):
Yeah, I've heard when people are talking about Upton Stout too.
Rock Perty gave him a ton of praise. Robert Saul,
like you said, everyone Kyle Shanahan that he's always one
of the most prepared rookies in the room. So not
only is he competitive and he's intense, and it really
shines on the practice field. He is the most prepared.
He knows how to read that route that rocks during
the Christian you know, and so it's really cool to
(08:23):
see the rookies learn so fast. I think it has
a lot to do with how much they're developing throughout
college so that at the time that the draft process
comes around, they're almost ready. I mean, there's huge differences,
the rookies said it themselves between college and the NFL.
But this draft class is spectacular and they stand out
among a lot of the draft classes in the past.
(08:44):
So these rookies, they are well prepared, they know how
to study, and they're really shining out on the practice field.
It's really coming through because, like Robert Sala said, we're
gonna probably need a lot of these rookies to step
in on the defensive side and really show out when
it comes to the regular season. So I'm really excited
to see how they continue to develop throughout camp. And
you mentioned that as you were making that note from
(09:06):
the brock Perney to the Christian McCaffrey.
Speaker 2 (09:08):
That Upton High mind goss that out.
Speaker 1 (09:12):
I want to know you really take the faithful into
what a training camp practice is, like what do you
see from your perspective? What's different from watching in the bleachers?
And if so one's never been to an open practice before,
what can you expect.
Speaker 2 (09:25):
How is it broken up?
Speaker 4 (09:27):
Well, basically like once once you get there, once we
enter the field or always on the side, we we
start looking for for players, like for the for the injuries, right,
like who's there, who's not there? Basically like going back
to school, who's.
Speaker 3 (09:43):
Absolutely I know?
Speaker 4 (09:45):
Right, So, so yeah, we start writing that in our notes. Okay,
both that's not here trying, you know. So so that
does like the first time because they're doing like their
warm ups and then they they each each position, like
the linebackers go on one side of the field. And
this year is different because we were so used to
the way the fields.
Speaker 2 (10:06):
Yeah, they got an upgrade, I.
Speaker 4 (10:07):
Know, because they have now way more space, especially to
have the Broncus in here for those joint practices. So
we were used to to seeing the linebackers on one
side like last year and every year, but they're all
the way over there to another side of the field,
and then the defensive linement and then that's you go
(10:28):
through the different proceitions right to start looking for players.
Speaker 2 (10:31):
Editions are all on their different groups exactly.
Speaker 4 (10:34):
And then after all that, after all the individual reels,
especially when the when the Pats come on on a
training camp, because usually when they don't have the Pats,
it's just it's like a light practice, yeah, not not
not very intense, but once the Pats come on, I
think one of the most exciting parts of training camp
(10:54):
are those one on ones. So they start doing those
one on ones that where c J. West was dominating.
We're I was talking about and also and also the
wide receivers against the defensive bags. Ricky peers All has
been doing a really great job on those. Those are
very exciting because then you start writing in your nose, okay,
(11:15):
Ricky want that that battle, and then for the defensive linement,
Okay he won that battle.
Speaker 3 (11:19):
You know, So those are very.
Speaker 4 (11:21):
Exciting, exciting, and then obviously they finish with the eleven
of an eleven. They have a period where it is
like a normal session eleven on eleven. Then they have
the part where they're moving the ball and getting for
a sound like kind of replicating what you see on
an official game, right, Yeah, and then obviously the kicking
competition the field goals. So yeah, there's a lot of
(11:43):
stuff going on during training camp, but it's very exciting.
Speaker 1 (11:46):
No, yeah, thanks for breaking that down for us. I
think what makes training camp so special, especially here in
the Bay.
Speaker 2 (11:53):
You talked about those.
Speaker 1 (11:54):
One on one drills when the pads come on and
how intense they could get, but you never really see
an elite battle like Trent Williams versus Nick Bosa. You know,
you only get that at forty nine ers camp. So
what's been I think one of the coolest or most
unique experiences that you've been able to see during those
one on one drills where it's literally it's a cliche
(12:14):
they say iron sharpens iron, but where one of the
best comes up against one of the best, or maybe
it's a rookie that's really shining against the vet.
Speaker 4 (12:22):
Yeah, those are really amazing. I think the media everyone
is looking looking for those. Oh there goes training against Bosa, right.
And also even like one of the funniest moments or
very interesting moments from this camp. I remember mckievit was
facing Nick Bosa because Makivaz just just talked to us
on Tuesday and he said all the things he did
(12:42):
like walking on the streets of San Francisco to get
in shape, and he was facing Bosa and at the
beginning both Bosa was was dominating. But then there was
one one one rep where I think Bosa sleep or something,
and then he was like one more.
Speaker 3 (12:58):
One more, because usually you see that he goes.
Speaker 4 (13:01):
To the other side and then the next guy comes
in to do his rep.
Speaker 2 (13:04):
He said no, no, no, give me yeah.
Speaker 4 (13:06):
And actually it was very competitive that that third rep
that they had Makivis against Bosa. It was very competitive
so you see those interesting things in camp.
Speaker 2 (13:16):
Yeah. No, the training camp day is they're really long.
It's hard days for these guys.
Speaker 1 (13:21):
They're in the building from the very morning all the
way till sundown, and they're just stacking days on top
of each other, and so it's really preparing them for
what an NFL season is about to bring. But also
what's really cool is you get to see those learning
curves like you talked about. He said, you know, at
the beginning, Bosa was dominating col to mkivit's and those
one on one drills. But then you start to see
cult to mckivits really get into that grind and start
(13:43):
really defending himself against Nick Bosa. And so it's cool
to see those learning curves. It's cool to see how
players take as the days go on, because it's a
long few weeks out here at the SAP Performance Facility. Now,
you told me also that as soon as you get
out to the practice field that you're taking attendance who's here,
who's not here, whether it's veteran rest days or maybe
some injuries we need to monitor. But as it stands
(14:04):
on day eleven now of training camp, what are some
injuries to monitor from the roster, who is getting some rest,
who's on the mend. What does the injury and health
status of our team look like right now.
Speaker 4 (14:15):
Actually, it's really it's really nice that Kyle Shanahan, like
every time he's fixed to the media, he gives us
some updates. So he just he just spoke to the
media on Monday, so so he told us. Unfortunately, the
I think the more the most serious injury is the
one that Kevin Gibvens is dealing with. He said he's
going to come back from a peck injury. They expect
(14:36):
him to come back around maybe at some point during
the season. And then he said, Isai Garando is dealing
with a shoulder injury, so he could miss like a
few weeks. Same thing with some Kano, but some Kano's
injury he's dealing with with a growing And then for
for Gay Brown, remember he had that uncle surgery and
(14:57):
during the off season, Uh, he says it started to
bother him a little bit this week, but uh, they
expect him to to maybe get him back at the
end of the week. So I'm assuming maybe for the
practice against the Broncos. So we'll be paying attention for
that on Thursday, and yeah, they were. And also Kyle
just checked Kyle just checked his his day, his day
(15:19):
today with an achille. So so there's a couple obviously,
Jawan Jennings he's still uh dealing with that calf injury.
And Renaldo Green and also Jacob Cowing, Uh they're dealing
with hamstrings. I remember Kyle Shana and he said he
spets them back for the Raiders game for the week
(15:39):
against the previously to the game against the Raiders, and
we saw them like like kind of working a little bit,
not not obviously part of practice, but on the side.
So that's a good sign for both Jacob Cowing and
Ronaldo Green.
Speaker 2 (15:53):
Okay, yeah, thank you for those updates.
Speaker 1 (15:54):
They sound obviously hard because their injuries were dealing with
during camp, but pretty positive because we're looking to expect
a lot of them back, whether that be next week
or the end of this week, or whether that be
towards the end of the preseason. So that's always good
to hear. Now, we talked a lot about the rookies,
but we didn't mention our first round pick, Mikel Williams.
What does he look like and how is he compared
(16:16):
to expectations that were put on him during the off season.
Speaker 4 (16:18):
Oh, it's amazing, amazing because the way the way he
I mean, he can play on the inside and on
the outside, and you can see him dominated. For example,
today Tuesday, I was watching him on those one on
ones I was talking about, So I saw him like
on the outside and he did a really good job.
Then sometimes they put him on the inside and he
(16:40):
also dominated. They say that it's I remember Trent, Yeah,
it was Trent Williams when he spoke to the media,
he said, it's really blocked. It's really hard to block
Michel because his arms are really long, almost has his legs,
so yeah, and also the strength he has, so yeah,
Michael Williams has been amazing. That's what I like about
(17:02):
this rookie class that almost most of them have been
very impressive, including obviously Michael Williams because obviously being a
first round pick, you know, obviously his expectations are going
to be like higher.
Speaker 3 (17:16):
But so far he's looking very good.
Speaker 1 (17:18):
So we talked a lot about the new faces on
the team, and I think some other ones that we
should hone in on. Are the free agents really cool
on the defense in side to see JP Jason Pinnock
come in and work with Robert Sala, they work together
over at the Jets and seeing how he's really flourishing
during those eleven on eleven drills. But then on the
offensive sign seeing DeMarcus Robinson really shine and make that
connection with rock Perty and seeing how they're really building chemistry.
(17:40):
What have you seen out of those two or any
other of the free agents that are making the team
this year.
Speaker 4 (17:45):
That's great because you're talking about players who have a
lot of experience obviously and Pinock obviously knowing Robert Sala,
but that's a good combination. We started talking about the
rookies and you combine that with the guys who have
more experience. So that's great for the forty nine ers
because guys like Peinock have been doing well in camp.
In fact, he already has like a pair of inners
(18:05):
agents during those eleven and on eleven drills, so he's
doing very well. And on offense, Yeah, I've been very
impressed with the Marcus Frovist and basically he catches everything
everything they know. You allays see number five out there
catching those those football so so yeah, it's really nice,
especially with the wide receiver room. You know, you had
(18:27):
the injury to jan Jennings obviously, the more serious injury
to Brandon and you who's obviously gonna take more time.
Speaker 3 (18:33):
To uh to recover.
Speaker 1 (18:35):
Uh.
Speaker 4 (18:36):
But it's nice that you have a guy like like
the Marcus Robinson who has done it before, who can
teach the young guys like Jordan Watkins h give them
some some tips and and you see the young guys
responding and then the guy with experience like like the
Marcus Robinson also doing well. So that that's a really
(18:56):
nice combination for the forty nine ers. And and also
I think we should add a guy like Ricky piers
All entering his second year. He was a first round
pick last year, and he's been amazing. I mean he
started obviously, remember with that injury hamstring injury. Remember he
missed OTA's miniamp in the first week of training camp.
(19:17):
But once he got back on the field, he started slow.
That that was like the plan the forty nine ers
had for him. In fact, they gave him like a
rest day if I remember correctly, after practicing for two days, right, yeah,
But then after that rast day, he has been very.
Speaker 3 (19:34):
Consistent on the one on ones. On Saturday it was
the Ricky Pearsall Show.
Speaker 4 (19:40):
I think he had like four receptions from Brock perty
and then also today on Tuesday, he also had an
amazing day. So yeah, it's been really nice to see
what Ricky Pearsol has been doing in training camp. In fact,
also Klaiy Kubiak, I remember him saying that that this
year he's more improved against man coverage. So he says
(20:00):
he meant to men, Ricky is doing.
Speaker 3 (20:02):
Better this year.
Speaker 1 (20:03):
So yeah, because not only is the chemistry working between
him and Brock and like you mentioned that, he's catching everything,
but they're impressive catches too, whether it's a toe tap,
sideline catch, or catch really deep in the end zone.
Speaker 2 (20:15):
I'm really liking to.
Speaker 1 (20:16):
See how Brock pretty places the ball with Ricky Pearsall.
And so I think it's also has to give credit
to that off season work that they were doing. I
heard that they were together in Florida. They go over
in Jacksonville or over in Arizona. So it's really cool
to see how that time that they spent together is
really showing in those really intense moments on the field
where you have a millisecond to make a read and
(20:37):
Ricky Piersoll's right there. So really like that you brought
that up because also I wanted to talk about some
of the younger players on the team. You mentioned Rickey Piersall,
but what about you know, a de Winter's, a Dominic Pooney.
How have you seen them grown and really elevate entering
this training camp.
Speaker 3 (20:52):
Oh yeah, that's gonna be key.
Speaker 4 (20:53):
In fact, Kyle Shanahan said that at the beginning of
training camp, it's gonna be it's gonna be crucial for
our guys on their second third year, like I did Winters,
who was entering his third year in the NFL, to
also contribute. And I think the Winters has been doing really,
really well.
Speaker 3 (21:10):
I like his progress.
Speaker 4 (21:11):
Remember in the past, like when he was a rookie,
even in his second year, he had a lot of
injuries through that process, so I think that that slow
him down a little bit. But this year he's healthy
and he's taking advantage of all his opportunities. I think
right now he's ahead and on the battle for that
spot to play alongside Fred Warner. So yeah, I like
(21:34):
what the Winters is doing. And and even also Dominice Pooney,
I mean he had a really solid rookie year. So
people have highest expectations on Dominique Pooney and it was
interesting to hear him what he had to say to
the media The other day was Monday.
Speaker 3 (21:50):
Monday when he spoke to the media and.
Speaker 4 (21:52):
He said, you know what, I remember they asked him
about what was the difference between his training camp during
his rookie year and this year, and he said, basically,
this year, I don't have to, like h question myself
a lot.
Speaker 3 (22:06):
I just I just go and do it.
Speaker 4 (22:08):
Obviously, you know, with a year full of experience, he's
more prepared. And also he said that he learned something
really interesting like that first year. You know in college
they're used to play only like eleve and tall games,
and he said this during this off season, he came
more prepare to play a longer season seventeen games and
(22:30):
maybe even going into the playoffs. So so yeah, I
remember him saying that on Monday, So that that was.
Speaker 3 (22:36):
Interesting and I think that's going to help him.
Speaker 1 (22:38):
Yeah, it's a huge thing that players talk about. We
hear a lot about it during this press conference. The
rookie wall, yeah, the rookie wall, but also about routine,
right whenever you ask a rookie, like we talked about
those rookie d linemen, CJ. West, Michael Williams, Alfred Collins.
You know, what have you learned from having Nick Bosa
in the room. Their answer is always routine. How they prepare,
(23:00):
how they come into the building, how they recover, what
they do leading up to practice. So getting that routine
down is so key for these players as they enter
the NFL season, because, like you said, it's a long one.
Speaker 2 (23:11):
It's nothing like college.
Speaker 1 (23:12):
So hearing about, you know, players getting their routine down
and feeling much more comfortable where they are, it should
be really fun to see how that shines on the field. Now,
we talked about him just a tad when we were
talking about Ricky Pearsaw in that connection. But Rock Party
is entering his fourth year with this team. He's got
a new contract, he's a new dad, he's established here
(23:33):
in the bay. How have you seen him really command
this offense and deliver passes like it's nothing for him?
This year?
Speaker 4 (23:40):
Yeah, Rock Perty has been amazing, I mean, very very
consistent basically what since we saw him as a rookie.
Usually Rock Purty shows us that he's very consistent and
when he does make a mistake, because obviously every player
is going to make a mistake at some point, it
looks like he gets angry and he finds a way
to correct immediately.
Speaker 3 (24:00):
So I like that in that like that fire in
Rock Perty and in.
Speaker 4 (24:04):
This training camp he's he's been amazing because if I
remember correctly, there was even one day I think what
it was, during the second week of training camp he
went like for eleven of eleven, I mean he completed
every every pass during that practice. And he has been
completing passes with Ricky pearsall with George Kittleig, has been
different guys, also with the Marcus Robinson, Russell Gage. Russell
(24:27):
Gage is another guy that has been doing Rock.
Speaker 2 (24:30):
Camps, Christian McCaffrey's in the past game. There's a lot of.
Speaker 4 (24:33):
Guys out there, so Perty has been completing passes with
different guys. So that's also what I like because usually
that's what a good quarterback in the NFL also does.
He looks at all his options. If number one is
not there, goes really quick. He processes everything really quickly.
That's what I like about One of the things I
like about Rock.
Speaker 1 (24:52):
Perty, well his this we actually sat down with the
quarterback earlier this week and he shared a little bit
of his insight from forty nine ers camp. Here it
is right here, well, Rock, welcome to the saloon. I
want to ask you while we're in the midst of
training camp that this isn't your first year. You're entering
year four with this team, and you've shared that the
offense has become like a second language to you now,
(25:13):
but every camp brings something new.
Speaker 2 (25:15):
What's been the biggest learning experience for you so far
this year?
Speaker 5 (25:19):
Man, that's a big question. Right off the rip, I
would say the fort or the biggest thing that I've
learned so far, Like going into here for I feel like, yes,
I know sort of what the days look like, how
long they are, what the purpose and intent is supposed
to be day in and day out. But I think
this year like having young guys come along and and
(25:40):
being in my fourth year being a guy that you know,
tries to bring these younger guys along, and in the
year's past, like my rookie year, obviously I was trying
to make the team my second years coming off surgery,
so I was trying to get back. But in all
those years, even last year. Like all those years, I've
had guys like Deebo, Christian, George Trent, these guys that
have been here for a long time. And I feel
(26:01):
like this year we've had some new you know, receivers
and running backs that you know, for me, it's been
a good opportunity to now be the fourth year guy,
come and bring them along and and push them and
coach them up a little bit, love on them, tell them,
hey man, you're doing a good job, and keep building.
Let's just keep stacking days. So I feel like that's
a little new aspect that you know, has been pretty
cool for me to have the opportunity this year.
Speaker 4 (26:22):
Yeah, I love it.
Speaker 2 (26:23):
Now, your quarterback Mac Jones also in that room with you.
Speaker 1 (26:26):
He stopped by our studio during the off season and
we chatted with him when he signed during free agency.
But we've heard in press conferences and around the room
that he's the funny guy and that he lightens the room.
So what's your relationship like with him and what's the
quarterback room like right now?
Speaker 5 (26:41):
Yeah, it's been awesome. I mean Max's personality and everything
is hilarious. Like he's always got just good little jokes
and one liners. And stuff, and especially in that room,
like you know, we're always you know, business like, we
got to know our job and what we're doing that day.
You know, what are we trying to get out today
and what's our answer in this coverage and all the things.
But to have him in that room to sort of,
(27:03):
you know, bring bring the spirit of you know, just
comedy and we can joke around. We can still enjoy
this thing. Man, it's a pretty cool deal that we
get to do. And so having him like sort of
remind me of that, it's been awesome. And we we're
out in the field, you know, doing drills and stuff
like he's he'll do his throw or whatever, and then
he'll like do a little dancemane or something and like,
to what the heck? It's so funny. And so he's
(27:24):
been a great, great light in our room.
Speaker 2 (27:25):
So I love to hear it. Now, tell me what
you see on the other side of the ball.
Speaker 1 (27:29):
There's a ton of rookies on the defensive side, and
they've sort of made a name for themselves during this camp.
So has anyone impressed you or is there anyone you're
excited to watch in game action this Saturday?
Speaker 5 (27:39):
I think upton Stout for sure has had a great camp,
you know, as a rookie going out there and lining
up against our top dogs. Man And I remember, like
a couple of days ago, he had a good play.
I dropped back, try throwing it on the sideline to
Ricky Piersall and he reached across and dove and knocked
it down. I was like, dang, Like this rookie's good.
He sees the game pretty good. There's been a couple
other like quick game things, right, I have to get
(28:00):
the ball out of my hand and he's like, you know,
trying to show me, like all I'm gonna go out
no him and know him out And I'm like, what
the heck. And so he's done a good job of
doing all those little things, and for a rookie like
I feel like he's got a really good feel for
the game. So upton Stout has had a great camp
so far.
Speaker 2 (28:14):
I love to hear it.
Speaker 1 (28:15):
Now, speaking of the rookies, you've mentioned that this camp
is about discovering the identity of the twenty twenty five
forty nine ers.
Speaker 2 (28:22):
We're only a few weeks in, but if you could
describe the identity right now, what would you say it is?
Speaker 5 (28:27):
Yeah, I think, you know, just we're younger, we got
new guys that have come in as well, and I
think it's it's back to the chip on the shoulder,
you know, we gotta we got to go prove ourselves
and which is an awesome thing in my mind. I
feel like the years past, we've had guys that have
sort of established themselves in the NFL and within their careers,
and we still have those guys, you know, Christian George,
(28:49):
fred Bosa, Trent Williams, all those guys, but we have
a lot of young guys that you know, got to
come in and step up in the role. And I
think at the end of the day, it's it's having
that chip on your shoulder and going and competing and
earning everything you get. Nothing is given to and so
I feel like it's a chip on the shoulder kind
of mentality this year for sure.
Speaker 2 (29:05):
Yeah, that's awesome.
Speaker 1 (29:06):
Now, when you're talking about your off season, you've shared
about how you've worked on your mobility and through different
throwing motions, different angles. We've seen throughout a few seasons
that your teammates get into some like non traditional workouts.
We've seen like Christian McCaffrey go swimming and full year
like flippers and all Fred Warner and the linebackers, they're
boxing or juggling. I've even seen guys on the D
(29:27):
line do pilates. Are there any like creative or unexpected
workouts that you find yourself doing during the off season.
Speaker 5 (29:33):
I mean, I don't know if you consider this one.
I mean, obviously I'm training and going hard on the
football things and whatnot in the weight room and all that.
But something that I really do love is pickleball. I
think pickleball is really good just for agility stuff and
hand eye coordination and balance and all the things. But
like getting a good group of people that are good
at pickleball and actually going hard at it. I got like,
(29:55):
obviously like good cardio workouts and stuff too, but the
cutting and stuff. I have a lot of respect for
tennis players. Now, yeah, like you know, it's obviously it's
one on one in a huge court, and the cutting
and diving and lunging and all the things that they
have to do is crazy.
Speaker 2 (30:09):
But anyways, yeah, who got you into pickleball?
Speaker 1 (30:12):
I don't know.
Speaker 5 (30:12):
I think like my wife and her family love playing it.
Some of my friends from college, but I don't know.
It's just something that I've done with all my friends
in the last couple of years and I love so
I try to throw that into my off season workout regimen.
Speaker 2 (30:25):
I love it.
Speaker 1 (30:25):
I love it now with joint practices coming up in
the first preseason game right around the corner, tell me
about the value of those reps for you in practice
and for a lot of the younger guys that game action.
Speaker 5 (30:35):
Oh, it's huge. I think. I think just this time
of year going into game one is really what's on
our mind? How are we going to become Game one?
In the moment third down? Stadium's going crazy? Are we
locked into our details in our job? And am i?
Am I going to make this throw on time? And
it's getting ready for that moment? And so you pull
back all the like all the way back till now
(30:57):
and it's like, all right, what am I doing today
to get ready for that? And so all the reps
that we get right now in the preseason games, when
you know there's some pressure, all the team, the coaches,
everybody's watching you. Every little move that you make is
being analyzed on the film room. All those things are good.
Speaker 1 (31:12):
You know.
Speaker 5 (31:12):
I think it's really good for you, and it's just
doing nothing but preparing us for when the fire comes
come game one in the season. So this is a
huge crucial time that you know, going into year four.
I appreciate this time now. I think in the past
it could be a little frightening, like oh man, I
got to get through this practice and have a good practice.
Speaker 1 (31:30):
And this and that.
Speaker 5 (31:30):
But now it's like, no, I really love and cherish
these moments because it's going to get me ready for
the fire that's about to come.
Speaker 2 (31:36):
Yeah, definitely.
Speaker 1 (31:37):
Now, there's a lot of new faces on this team,
as we've talked about throughout this entire podcast, but it's
been reiterated that there's a standard here and you've talked
a lot about upholding that standard. And even when newcomers
are in the building, that's the first thing they notice,
is the culture. Even when you walk out onto the
practice field, it's the forty nine er way. How would
you describe the standard that's set here for maybe someone
(32:00):
who hasn't been in the building.
Speaker 5 (32:02):
Yeah, I think just the way that everybody carries himself. Obviously,
the I think Jed, John Lynch, Kyle, they've done a
great job on bringing amazing people in, you know, from
the staff to players, free agents, drafting rookies, they do
a great job of evaluating people and understanding what it
takes to win is you got to come together and
(32:22):
find ways to go through challenging things and and within that,
you got to obviously do it with the right people
that you trust and that are gonna work hard when
no one's looking. And so they've built an amazing culture
with that. And you know, as a as a rookie,
when I came in, I saw the way that Fred Warner,
you know, took care of his body. Christian McCaffrey, George Kittle, Like,
these guys are doing such great things to their body
(32:44):
with rehab and all the things and getting sleep and
and then obviously when they're out in the field, the
way that they warm up and how intentful they are
within their reps and going hard and competing and then
just feeling there the fire when they when they talk
to guys you know, on the sidelines or whatever, like
you just feel I was like, WHOA this place is.
There's a standard here, you know, like this is the
(33:05):
standard and to be great and to win games, and
this organization has had so much success, and I think
it's because they've prioritized bringing in the right people that
understand what the standard is and they hold that standard.
So hopefully that gives someone a glimpse of you know,
what it's like being forty nine ers.
Speaker 2 (33:20):
Yeah, and now you're the guy that everyone's looking towards.
How does that feel before?
Speaker 1 (33:25):
Now?
Speaker 5 (33:25):
Oh, it's it's a blessing for sure, And you know,
going in a year four, it's like, all right, what
has gotten me here? And it's it's exactly that learning
from those guys and understanding what it's going to take
for an eighteen week long season and then playoffs and
trying to get to the super Bowl, Like we understand
what that looks like. And now for me to be
the quarterback of this organization and the guy and and
(33:47):
bringing these young guys along, man, it's I've dreamed of this,
you know, to have this kind of position and help
bring other guys along and help achieve a goal together,
there's nothing better. So it's a it's a badge of
honor for me, and I don't you know, hold it lightly,
Like I want to use this platform man to to
obviously influence my teammates and everybody for years to come.
Speaker 1 (34:06):
All Right, that was our interview with brock perty He
gave a ton of insight onto what year four is
like for him and what he's excited to see this season.
But hazews, we got some more exciting news. Right around
the end of this week. We're going to host the
Denver Broncos right here at the SAP Performance Facility. How
excited are you to see some new faces out on
the field and see what competition is like during joint practices.
Speaker 4 (34:29):
Oh, I'm very exciting because also we're gonna get to
see guys like Dray Green Law Hufanga. Uh, it's gonna
be weird watching them in another uniform, but I think
it's gonna be nice when when like they talk to
Fred or even like the young guys like a Nick
Martin on the Vote nine ers. Maybe I'm sure he's
gonna be looking for for Dre asking for you know,
(34:52):
some some tief so so yeah, I think that that's
gonna be fun. And also remember I remember like like Shanahan,
I think he said this last year. He said that
usually you get more out of these joint practices than
the actual preseason game, and basically because you have like
more control in this case, he he talks to Sham
(35:14):
Payton and they say and they say, hey, this is
gonna We're gonna do things, so you have more more
control of what's going on.
Speaker 1 (35:22):
I really glad that you mentioned those familiar faces just
in different uniforms, because last week CJ. West talked about
how he saw himself in DJ Jones, who's also another
former forty nine Ers player now on the Denver Broncos.
He mentioned that he watched a lot of DJ Jones
tape back in college and was noticing that when he
got drafted here to the forty nine Ers that DJ
(35:43):
Jones really excelled under Robert Sola's system. And so he's
really been honing in on what DJ Jones did to
excel in this system because he really wants to pick
up there.
Speaker 2 (35:53):
And so I'm excited to see him CJ and DJ,
you know, share notes.
Speaker 1 (35:57):
And explain what their process has been like throughout camp
and what it's like playing in the league, what it's
like playing with Robert Sala. So that'll be a fun
matchup to watch. Now, you mentioned how these practices are
controlled and how this is really valuable time for the
vets to shine to the coaching staff because in a
preseason game, we're seeing a lot of the newcomers, the
rookies really make their start there. So what's the difference
(36:20):
between joint practices ver is a preseason game and why
those practices could be valuable to some of our vets
on the team.
Speaker 4 (36:27):
Yeah, basically, I think the biggest difference, like I said,
is like you have more control of it, and you
also can play more your starters, you know, even more
because obviously on a on a precision game, we're not
gonna say much from a Nick Bows or or a
Trend Williams. So that's when those joint practices are very
valuable to the teams because you give reps to your starters,
(36:51):
even some of some of the rookies, like in the
case of the forty nine ers, even Robert Sala said, like,
I think you mentioned that also at the beginning of
the episode, that we might have like maybe eight new
different starters on different So so it's really nice to
go against another team, and also for the players because
they even mentioned we get.
Speaker 3 (37:09):
Tired of facing the same guy every day.
Speaker 4 (37:12):
So so yeah, it's really nice to to go against
a different scheme, and even Robert Sala was mentioned that,
mentioning that on Tuesday, he said, uh, in the case
of app on Staff, he was referring to option Styff
is going, I'm gonna be interested in seeing how he
has just because obviously he's facing like the same guy,
like for example, one on ones he's usually facing Russell
(37:32):
Gage onto that he went against Ricky Pearsal. So it's
going to be interesting facing the guys for the bron
against the Broncos for different guys. So I think in
that case it forces the rookie to make adjustments.
Speaker 5 (37:45):
Yeah.
Speaker 2 (37:45):
Another note I picked up from Salah was that they're
not preparing for these practices.
Speaker 1 (37:50):
No, he said, we're throwing the team out there and
seeing how they react. So we're getting raw experiences and
raw reactions from the guys and how they adjust to
the different system, the different faces. So who are you
excited to see in those matchups, whether that be a
Broncos defender versus a Niners receiver, maybe the other way around.
Speaker 4 (38:09):
Yeah, definitely, there's a few because the Broncos the good
thing I'm interesting to see, especially in general the forty
nine Ers, the general wide receivers like Jordan Watkins and
then a second year player like a RecA Pears Hall
against that Broncos difference Because a lot of people are
on the NFL are saying that maybe the Denver Broncos
are going to be really good on difference this year
(38:32):
or so in general, I'm interested. I'm really interested to
see how the forty nine ers wide receivers do against
that secondary.
Speaker 2 (38:40):
Yeah, and putting up this wide receiver room to the test.
Speaker 1 (38:44):
Now, speaking of those position groups, we're looking at the
first preseason game right here at Levi Stadium. It should
be a fun one because we're looking at around a
five pm start kickoff, so it'll be such a cool
environment to really kick off football here at home against
the Denver Broncos. Now, like we mentioned earlier, there's going
to be a lot of first year players out there.
(39:05):
There's going to be a lot of new faces out there,
and the coaching staff is going to evaluate how those
players perform and how they'll filter down to that fifty
three man roster. So now we're really looking closer at
position battles. Who's making the team, who's not, And so
while you're watching this game, who are you keeping your
eye on, or maybe what position groups are keeping your
eye on as you keep track of who might make
(39:27):
that fifty three men roster.
Speaker 3 (39:28):
Yeah, obviously that.
Speaker 4 (39:29):
Linebacker position, like we were saying, the winters, I think
right now is doing a good job and he's ahead
of everybody on the on the linebacking to play linebacker
alongside Fred Warner, but also the nickel the nickel position.
Obviously we mentioned Apton Stout. I'm assuming right now he's
ahead based on what we have seen and in practice.
So I'm gonna be looking at that during the games,
(39:54):
not that just not just this game, but you know,
the three pre season games. And obviously the safety is
you know, with injuries to Malik Mustafa's going to be
interesting what some of the Giant safeties do out there,
like a Marquis Siegel is going to be really interesting
what he does at the safety position. And obviously in
(40:15):
the in the differensive line, we have a lot of
young guys. We didn't mention Sevastian Baldez. Yes, and they
call him also the Hulks.
Speaker 3 (40:27):
That's what Funny said.
Speaker 1 (40:28):
You know, I think if a player is picking up
nicknames during camp, that's usually a good.
Speaker 4 (40:32):
Sign, right, Yes, I'm gonna I'm looking forward to them,
and maybe he records a sack and I'm gonna be
like the Hulk with the sacks. But yeah, I'm gonna
I'm gonna be looking at the differensive line because we
have a lot of young players like a Sebastian bald
This was undrafted.
Speaker 3 (40:46):
Because remember also we already talked about the guys the.
Speaker 4 (40:49):
Forty nine ers drafted, but always un undrafted guys always always, Yeah,
I think loves the like in the past, remember on Shire,
Kendrick Bourne, Jordan Mason recently, I think this year also
a guy like a Sebastian Baldez or Corey Kainer, they
(41:10):
might shine during the pre season, so we better watch
out for that too.
Speaker 2 (41:14):
Yeah, or Stone the linebacker. He's also performing well.
Speaker 3 (41:17):
I can recorded an interception also forced fumble.
Speaker 1 (41:21):
All So, I mean, yeah, there's a ton of you know,
under the radar guys that you should keep your eye
on because their names might pop during the preseason and
so it's fun to keep track on how they do
and if they make the team. Now, I'm sure all
of the faithful, both you and I are really excited
for this Saturday, because the first preseason game marks a
huge milestone throughout the entirety of training camp.
Speaker 2 (41:43):
It's a huge turning point for the energy, for the
focus of the team.
Speaker 1 (41:48):
So what is camp post the first preseason game going
to look like? How do you see you know, the
coaching staff really adjusting with the players and honing in
on so maybe learning curves for the players to focus on.
Speaker 3 (42:00):
Oh yeah, definitely, definitely.
Speaker 4 (42:02):
You evaluate everything what happened during this first joint practice
right then the game against the Broncos, and then you
start looking at the roster cutdowns. So obviously I think
that's that's one thing to focus on because for the
following week or the week after the Broncos game, you
want to see that consistency. Obviously we've been seeing that
(42:24):
so far from the rookies, but you'll want that to
continue throughout the pre season. So I think that's one
of the biggest things.
Speaker 1 (42:32):
Well, hey, Zeus, thank you so much for sitting down
with me today after a training camp session talking everything
forty nine ers can't Previewing what's to come with joint
practices in the first preseason game has been really fun
to dive deep on what's going on here at forty
nine ers HQ, but faithful, be sure to stay tuned
to the Saloon Will you'll get more updates from me
