Speaker 1 (00:00):
Jared working out of the gun, takes the Snappies back,
four man Rush Goff sets gros Got on the Baugh,
flits it on the hooked ladder, coming inside the phone
to the end, come Sargin down.

Speaker 2 (00:12):
Detroit Lions.

Speaker 1 (00:13):
Oh baby, how beautiful is that? Welcome to week four
at the end of the whole season. It is the
twenty in the Huddle podcast. I am Tim twentyman. You
all know who this is. This is David kaf and
the Troit Free Press. But also he's got a brand
new book out, Detroit Lions, an illustrated timeline. David's your
first book. Tell me a little bit about it. How

(00:35):
excited are you?

Speaker 3 (00:36):
First book? You know, it was fun to do. It
was a little project I took on the spring. Finally
coming out next week. I do have to give a
shout out to Aiman and the entire Lions pr staff.
They helped me with some photos and it's a big
coffee table book. You know, if you're a Lions fan,
it takes you through the whole history of the franchise,
from when it moved to Detroit ninety years ago through
the championships of the fifties. You know, some of the

(00:57):
lean years that followed, but Barry and Kelvin and obviously
now making a run maybe towards the Super Bowl. It's
pretty good team tim.

Speaker 1 (01:03):
And pretty good timing, right yeah. And it's good timing
here in Detroit obviously with what the Detroit Tigers are
doing with their playoff run. Now you've got football on
Monday night. They're gonna be playing this bad boy. Yeah,
that was a nice look. They look good. And this is,
you know, a two and one line team taken on
a three to oh Seattle team playing some pretty good
football right now. And I know some people look at

(01:23):
the schedule Seattle's hat say, well, you know this is
gonna be their first real test, But look, you can
only play the guys that are in front of you.
They've done what they need to do to get to
this point. Here's the segment we do three keys to
the game. Let's start with I think is a big one,
and it's limiting their big pass plays. I mean, you
look at DK Metcalf, Jackson Smith and Jig but Tyler Lockett.
That's a really, really good trio. And look what they've

(01:46):
done the last few years playing the Lions. I think
Gino had three hundred and twenty eight passing ears for
two touchdowns, one hundred and sixteen rating. They've had a
little trouble stopping this passing game. That's to me one
of the big keys to this game defensive.

Speaker 3 (01:58):
You know, well, we talked about keys the other day
and you sort of mentioned that we'd be talking about him.
I was looking at Gino in the stats and it's
I think he's third or fourth in the league in
passing right now, Like have some really efficient numbers, And
I think what they're doing is it's a lot like
the approach that they've taken with Jared Goff here, like
he's okay. Gino has become okay with taking that check down,
taking that check down, trying to throw deep and when
you get DK Metcalf one on one coverage or you

(02:19):
can confuse the secondary, they hit some shots and DK's
got a couple long touchdowns this year. You're right, limiting
the big plays. The Lions have done a good job
of that with their secondary so far this year. I
think the one big one they gave up in Week
one was you know, a short little crosser and Carlton
Davis slips on it, and those things happen. But if
the Lions can keep make Seattle go ten plays for

(02:39):
a score rather than three plays with a fifty yard
or mixed in, that bodes well for them.

Speaker 1 (02:44):
This secondary's in a much better position to handle a
team like that than they were in the past. You know,
obviously with Brian Branch and Kirby Joseph back there. I
think Terry and Arnold's, you know, got to clean up
some of the penalties. But I think he's playing pretty well.
I think last week was his best game. The Cardinals
rhidhim six times, completed two passes for thirty one I'll
take that every week from a rookie cornerback in this league. So,

(03:05):
you know, and obviously Carlton is a veteran guy. You
feel the same way that they're just kind of better
prepared than they've ever been the last three years that
they've lost this matchup for this aspect of the game.

Speaker 3 (03:15):
Yeah, look, you're right. The you know, when you have
a young guy like Terry and Arnold, like, you're gonna
have some bumps in the road, and that's where a
couple of big plays have come from. Some of the
penalties not a big deal. He'll get over that. But
I think that pairing that they have at safety Kirby
Joseph and Brian Branch right now really working well together. Kirby,
he patrols so much ground in the back end. When
you have Brian Branch playing as a robber coming up
and playing in the slot helping him run support, like,

(03:37):
that's just a really lethal combination back They're both big hitters,
so I do think that's a big part of the
defensive success so far.

Speaker 1 (03:43):
And both are gonna have to play a big game.
Gino Smith's seventy seven passes completed most of the NFL.
He's second in completion percentage seventy four probably eight percent
and thirty yards. He's playing really good football right now.
But I think that's gonna be a great matchup because
this new look secondary, This to me is their greatest
test so far. Week one of the Rams and Stafford
that was a good one too, but when you lost

(04:04):
Puka pretty early in that game, some of the other
weapons they were without.

Speaker 3 (04:08):
This to me is their greatest test, you know, the
for a guy like Terry On to have to face
this sort of four you know week stretch, the right,
I mean, you start off with the two Rams guys
that you mentioned, has a pretty good duo.

Speaker 2 (04:20):
You know.

Speaker 3 (04:20):
Mike Evans didn't do a lot, Godwin had a nice game,
and then last week Marvin Harrison Junior a pretty good
young receiver. This one's got a whole you know, they
got three receivers, I mean, Jackson, Smith and Jig. But
he had what did you have twelve catches that one game,
So he can really be a chain mover if they
need to.

Speaker 1 (04:33):
And that's your guy in the slot. That's there. I'min
Ross Saint Brown, a guy they look at a lot,
so they they've got all the weapons there. That'll be
a great aspect of this game. All right, Let's get
to the second big key, and to me, it's it's
continuing to show dominance in the run game, and not
just what the Lions do offensively in the run game,
but defensively, you know too. That's big boy ball when
you can control that part of it. And they've shown
that obviously for the first three weeks. Dave I came

(04:55):
across a great stat it actually it was is Greg Miola,
who does a great job in the information department there
with in Aman's crew. But twenty two games in a
row that the Lions have not allowed a running back
to rush for at least seventy yards.

Speaker 4 (05:08):
Wow.

Speaker 1 (05:09):
You have to go all the way back to the
Carolina game in twenty two when when fore men and
freezing Yeah went to but imagine now they've allowed some
one hundred yard performances from quarterbacks. Justin fields has been there,
but they've taken that part of the game away. And
I think when you do that defensively, it just makes
everything else easier.

Speaker 3 (05:26):
You know, I was writing about the run defense this
week because coming off that game and what they did
against James Connor, I think he led the league in
a rushing going into that game last week, and the
way they shut years or something like that eight carries
like ran for nothing. I think running backs this year,
every running back taking quarterbacks out of it. They they're
averaging forty seven yards a game against the lines running backs.
That is when you can shut down the you know,

(05:47):
the primary running game, let's.

Speaker 2 (05:49):
Call it right.

Speaker 3 (05:49):
You know a lot of those quarterback runs are sort
of specialty runs. As Ben Johnson would say, it really does.
It makes a team one dimensional, and that you know,
helps your defense cover and do the things that it
needs to do to be successful. The Lions have played
really good defense through three weeks. Uh, that's why they're
they're two and one. I mean, that's why I think
they have a shot to go to the super Bowl
this year because that defense now pairs with an offense

(06:10):
that's going to be dangerous in time. And we saw
it last week. When that offense can run the ball
like it did. You know, you just your your your
entire playbook is open offensively because you control the game, You.

Speaker 1 (06:19):
Get lads, you get quarterbacks running around, you get all
that kind of stuff. I mean, you get all that stuff.
It all opens up. To me, that's a huge key.
Can the Lions offensively and defensively control the run game
like they have the first three weeks, that one will
be really huge, all right, the next one is and
I think we've both kind of wondered this. We've asked
Dan Campbell about it this week. But obviously, losing Marcus

(06:40):
Davenport was big. You know, that was a big veteran
guy that I think the description they used is they
crushed the can with and aiden and there that was
that was a good term and it was right. We
saw that through three games Now, who's who fills in
Marcus Davenport lost for the season, big loss. They've got
some options, But who's that guy that fills in? Because

(07:01):
if you don't find that guy and and and look,
they eventually down the road they could make a trade,
they could get some other guys in there. But I
think for the short term, it's going to be the
guys that they have on this roster. Who do you
jumps out as a.

Speaker 3 (07:11):
Guy that you think maybe can fill that same Yeah, look,
first of all, when Dan makes that imagery of crushing
the can, like it's so perfect, it's so vivid, you
can see it how it worked with Davenport, and yeah,
that's exactly what it was. And they're going to miss Davenport.
And you know, as I look at this team going forward,
like that's a big concern to me, is who plays
opposite Aiden Because we've seen it through three weeks, six

(07:32):
and a half sacks. I mean, Aiden is just so
consistent with the pressure that he brings even when he
doesn't get to the quarterback as hard as he plays
good tandem in the middle. Now, it's who that other
end is. It sounds like Josh Pascal is going to
get first first DIBs at it. Let's let's say, you know,
I don't know that he brings the same length and strength,
you know, the same physicality that Marcus Davenport does. That's

(07:53):
that's really what Marcus was.

Speaker 2 (07:54):
So good at.

Speaker 3 (07:55):
But he's a good player, you know, he can he
can be. But I think they need a little bit more.
I know fans like the James Houston that doesn't really
fit into that to me, you know, he's more an
outside linebacker if you maybe need to steal a few
snaps when Derek Barnes is out. But whatever it is,
especially in those passing downs because they can be so dangerous,
you got to find someone else who can get to
the quarterback with aid.

Speaker 1 (08:12):
To me, I think who that guy can be is
levi Ownzurique, you know, I think, and I know they
like to use him inside, especially on those pass russ situations,
create some you know, some games up front and do
some things. But I think he to me, is a
similar guy to Marcus. He's big, he's physical. He'd be
a big end that can set the edge and kind
of crush the can a little bit more too. He's

(08:33):
played terrific in the first two games as a half sack.
I think he's got seven quarterback hits somewhere right on this,
so he's been active. He can play inside outside. It'll
be interested to me how much they decide to throw
him outside and maybe try to recreate that same kind
of body type thing with Levi because you do have Reader,
you do have Ale inside. If you want to maybe
extend them a little bit more inside, get that push

(08:54):
to put Levi outside, you can do that. But it'll
be really interesting to see what they do. This is
a This is a big This is a big opportunity
for Pascal though, right as their'd season.

Speaker 3 (09:02):
I think for both of them, because you know, Levi's
in a contract here. I mean, if he can show
some of that flexibility to look, I really liked leve
I thought like, I think that's their best force them
upfront right now is Aiden and the Leam and DJ
and Levi. I just don't know, you know, if Reader's
ready or has enough pass rush, like how you do
that in some of those those third down situations. Who
that other guy is out there? I think Levi is
clearly in that their top four among defensive linemen right now.

(09:24):
But Josh, you know he's a guy that's similar to
Levi in that the first couple of years of his
career had some injuries, didn't do a whole lot. Maybe
he has an opportunity this year that he can run with,
So we'll see. I think you're right, Levi's playing really
good ball. If they could get Josh playing at a
similar level or even close to, that defensive line is
gonna look.

Speaker 1 (09:42):
And the big thing, Davis, They've got to find somebody
because if they don't, you're going to see every play
double team with hutch and you might see some triple
teams with the back coming out. I mean, if they
don't get the kind of production they were getting from Marcus,
teams are going to go into that game and say, look,
we ain't letting hutch beat us. Anybody else can. Hutch
isn't gonna be us, And hutch is still going to
make some plays, but double teams, triple teams, that's tough.

(10:03):
That's why I think that other edge is so important.

Speaker 3 (10:05):
Backup tackle for Hutchinson again this week that he's going
to face on the right side of that seattle off
the line probably. I mean, they got to send help
his way regardless but he's still going to get to
the quarterback. But you're right, just for the long term
success of this team, they need someone else to step
up opposite Hutchinson to be that guy consistently.

Speaker 1 (10:22):
Well, those are three keys and what should be a
really really great game and a great atmosphere Monday night
football at Ford Field, Detroit Lions. An illustrated timeline. Where
can people get the book?

Speaker 3 (10:33):
Should be at all bookstores starting next week or you know,
find me. I'll probably have some copies on me. Redepress
dot com is the.

Speaker 1 (10:39):
Other place you might want to put your Twitter out there.
People might hit you up on Twitter for it. Dave
for Quett, thanks for joining me, appreciate it. Welcome back
to the twenty in the Huddle podcast. Very happy, Welcome
in Levi owns Quae defensive Tackle Detroy Lions, and Levi

(11:00):
happy you're sitting here. I'm happy we're talking week four
and you're playing as well as you are. Just how
are you feeling? Everybody knows the story of the first
couple of years, obviously you how what you've battled through
to be right here right now be such a big
part of what this defensive line is doing. Just Just
how proud of yourself are you that that you battled
through that.

Speaker 4 (11:18):
Man, I'm real happy, real blessed and just happy I
kind of stuck to the plan and you know, just
really focused on getting back to football, whether I could
or whether I couldn't.

Speaker 2 (11:29):
Just you know, put one hundred into coming back so.

Speaker 1 (11:32):
And now and now you're back a couple half sacks,
four quarterback hits, really being a productive part of that
defensive line, just from not just being healthy, but just
where your game is at. You know, what you've done
over the last year to get yourself to a point
where now you are a consistent contributor and a big
part of this defensive line. Just what what have you

(11:54):
done over the last year to kind of put yourself
in this position? Where has your game improved the most?
You think the last.

Speaker 4 (12:00):
Year, man, I think just honestly, one is just getting
training and you know, I haven't been able to get
a true off season, and you know, I've been training
here up here in Michigan and Mecca, you know, real
real nice one on one training, So that was a
big part of it. But also, you know, just getting
out working on my pass ors moves out here. You know,
just repetition. That's that's what people don't understand. When you're hurt,

(12:24):
you're not you can't get the reps because by rep
five you're hurting. When you feel good, you know, I
can come here and get fifty reps if I wanted to,
you know what I'm saying.

Speaker 2 (12:33):
So that was kind of the transition.

Speaker 1 (12:34):
What is Terra Williams meant for that? For that defensive
line room and for you personally?

Speaker 4 (12:39):
Yeah too, will Man, I think he makes he makes
the complicated stuff simple in our room, So, man, it
means a lot to happen. He's just knowledge of the game.
But usually you know, usually when you get guys who
know a lot, they're very they want things done a
certain way. I mean, t he's specific to everybody. You

(13:00):
know what I'm saying. He does It's not one way,
it's what's the best way you can do it? And
how can you help us win? You know what I'm saying.

Speaker 2 (13:06):
So, I mean he's a big part of why we're
doing what we're doing.

Speaker 1 (13:10):
You know, big loss last week with Marcus Davenport going down,
just he was playing so well opposite Hutch. You guys
had a nice little five man rotation in there. Just
how big of a loss it is Marcus and but
you guys have the guys in the room, do you
think that that can kind of offset it.

Speaker 2 (13:27):
Yeah, that's a huge loss.

Speaker 4 (13:28):
I mean, Marcus is our dog, and you know, when
Marcus and Hutch on it, it's just like you got
two titans, you know what I'm saying, two titans on
the edge.

Speaker 2 (13:36):
So it's it's a huge loss for us.

Speaker 4 (13:38):
But I think, you know, we got the guys in
the room to fill in for Marcus and take care
of the role that he took care of one hundred percent.

Speaker 1 (13:46):
I thought Aaron described it good when they were really
humming with Marcus and Hutch with there, and then you
have DJ and a Leam. Obviously Millie said it was
like squeezing the cam.

Speaker 2 (13:53):
Yeah, it's like what it was.

Speaker 4 (13:55):
It's dangerous when they're out there, It's like they all
they gotta do is crush if everybody bull rushes, you.

Speaker 2 (14:01):
Know, yeah, quarterbacks not doing nothing.

Speaker 1 (14:03):
You know, you've been touted for your versatility being able
to play inside outside. With Marcus going down, do you
see yourself maybe hopping outside a little bit more, filling
some of that role and how much you looking forward
to that because you're a big guy on the edge,
you know, faces up, you know some of them tackles,
you know, in space that seems like it might fit
your game.

Speaker 4 (14:21):
Yeah, I mean I love it. I love playing on
the edge. I love playing on the inside. It doesn't
really matter. I just I like being versatile, you know,
So I enjoy it. You know, I'm there at least
maybe two times in a game this season, so I've
done it during practice, you know.

Speaker 2 (14:38):
I enjoy it. Sometimes you just feel a little more
free when you're on the edge.

Speaker 1 (14:41):
Yeah, Josh Pascal is the name that's been brought up
a lot, you know this week, a guy that is
probably going to play quite a bit there on the edge.
Just what have you seen from Josh and his development
and what are the expectations in that room? You know,
for a guy in his third year looking for an
opportunity boom now he it's said it falls rate in
his lap. And look, in this league, youve got to

(15:03):
take advantage of those opportunities. So what's what's the thought
in the room about the job that he's.

Speaker 5 (15:07):
Going to do.

Speaker 4 (15:07):
I think everybody has big expectations for Josh and We
know he's going to do good because that practice he
does good.

Speaker 2 (15:12):
You know what I'm saying.

Speaker 4 (15:13):
He's winning his reps in practice, and on top of that,
he's knocking people back. Josh is strong. I mean, if
you just look at him, the dude is strong. I'm
telling you. So all he needs to do is get
off the ball and knock somebody's head off, and he's
he's going to be a big impact.

Speaker 1 (15:28):
Trust you know, low compact guy, you know, a little
bit different of a rusher. But just how does his style,
how might that style maybe fit alongside yourself? Hutch a
lean and.

Speaker 4 (15:42):
It'll be great, I mean, because Josh will be opposite
of Hutch. You know what I'm saying. We Hutch has
every move.

Speaker 2 (15:48):
In the back.

Speaker 4 (15:49):
If Josh, if Josh gets off that line and puts
his head in the tackles chest, it's over. Either he's
pushing him and getting a sack, or he's pushing him
into Hutch. What I'm saying, so they they're gonna work
well together without a doubt.

Speaker 1 (16:03):
You know the great thing about playing opposite Hutch, You're
gonna get one on one. Yeah, you're gonna get all
those one of the ones you guys have changed the
narrative a little bit defensively. You know, obviously with kind
of what happened last year, everybody talked about this being
a weakness of this football team. That certainly is not
the strength. You guys on that side of the ball
are the number one reason you are two and one
to start this season. How much you love the fact

(16:25):
that you've changed that narrative a little bit and how
much you like that? For Aaron Glent, I mean, I
love it.

Speaker 2 (16:30):
I love it.

Speaker 6 (16:31):
One.

Speaker 4 (16:31):
I think this is what we've worked for. I think
a lot of our defensive players have grown together. So
for us to just grow and get better, it shows
that we were on the right path and we're doing
the right things at the end of the day. And
then for Ag, AG has always had a great plan
for us. You know, the game plan is in my opinion,
it's always been good. It's always been great. So I
think you when your defense gets experienced, now you get

(16:56):
to see, oh, you know, maybe the players were just
a little less experience and the game plan was right.
Now you see, Okay, the game plan was probably always right.
We just needed to trust each other, build together and
get better, you know.

Speaker 2 (17:09):
Together and you.

Speaker 1 (17:10):
Add some pieces that are making a big difference yourself
included Terry On. Obviously with Carlton moving branch over safety
has been really really good. So you get the right
pieces in the right place, you get some depth. That's
that's the right plan for sure. Do you even find
yourself when you watch taper or roll it back you
marvel at Hutch at all?

Speaker 2 (17:27):
Yeah?

Speaker 4 (17:28):
Oh my god, one cause it's like, you know, I
try to be personally he's younger than me. I try
to play like Hutch. You know, I try to win
every rep that I go in and I don't. But
like for the most part, Hutch wins I don't know
what looks like eighty percent of his reps, you know
what I'm saying. So in practice, in practice, I'm like,

(17:48):
all right, I gotta win each rep, no matter what
if the QB throws the ball, Like, I gotta work
on winning each rep.

Speaker 2 (17:55):
Like, you know, if Hutch can do it, I can
do pass can do it. That's an example. It's a
true is that room, isn't it without a doubt?

Speaker 4 (18:02):
So you know the guys are looking at Hudge and
you know we're trying to get like Hutch you know
what I'm saying, Like he's getting all the sacks.

Speaker 2 (18:08):
We want the sacks too, you know what I'm saying.
So it is it is great to watch him.

Speaker 4 (18:13):
I mean, this is you know, he's rare one, so
I mean studying him is it'll benefit all of us.

Speaker 1 (18:20):
DJ reader, What has he meant for you? A veteran
guy who's been through a lot, not only that, but
been through injury to come back from that, but just
and it has been really good, really consistently for long time.
What he meant to you?

Speaker 2 (18:31):
I mean, man, it's a lot.

Speaker 4 (18:32):
I mean even just one from his the knowledge that
he has, and to just playing alongside him, you don't
worry about nothing, you know what I'm saying this. You
know he's going to handle his business and then sometimes
he makes it easy because he just knocks everybody back.
So I mean it's like, uh, you know, and he's
on what year eight? Yeah, yeah, you can just tell

(18:53):
he's a veteran, you know what I'm saying. He handles
his business. It almost looks easy out there for him.
So playing with him and playing all thin is just
it's a benefit for us.

Speaker 1 (19:02):
How what you're looking forward to getting into these on
a national stage on Monday Night.

Speaker 2 (19:06):
You like them, You like how they look.

Speaker 4 (19:07):
This week, like if they look better once you get
them black jerseys on too.

Speaker 1 (19:12):
What's the scouting report on Seattle? Obviously a team you
guys have struggled to be here the last three years.

Speaker 2 (19:17):
Big game.

Speaker 1 (19:17):
They're three and oh this could have implications. We saw
how it did you know two years ago at the
end of the year. How big of a game is this?
What's what's the quick scolary report on that offense?

Speaker 2 (19:26):
Yeah, I mean, it's a it's a it's a big
game for us.

Speaker 4 (19:28):
I mean, but we're in a new team, so you know,
you can't you can't really think about the past. It's
one team. But uh, I mean, we know what we
gotta do. They got a great running back, we got
a great quarterback. Got to keep the QB in the pocket,
gotta win on one on ones, and got to stop
the run. I think it always starts with stopping the run. Yeah,
so we can see let the ball fly, but stop

(19:49):
the run like we've been doing and just handle business
up front.

Speaker 1 (19:52):
Players always like that by a week to be somewhere
in the middle of the season. But is this one
after after this week week five? Is that hitting you guys?
Maybe at a pretty good time. What about you personally?
You're looking forward to kind of just the week off
week five and you get your feed up. Oh you
don't like it?

Speaker 4 (20:07):
No, no, because I mean for the most part, you know,
some guys have heard. But we're fresh, you know, we're practicing.
Nobody's really tired of practicing. Yet it's not week eight,
it's not week ten days yet exactly. In my opinion,
this is terrible. It's not where you want to break.
You know, we just we just started playing football. You know,

(20:27):
this is game four. You know, it's just it's going.

Speaker 1 (20:31):
To be a long stretch afterwards.

Speaker 4 (20:33):
Yeah, it'll be a long stretched bodies feeling good. So
I don't like it. I didn't even know the NFL
did this. Personally, I think it's a terrible setup. But
it is what it is. You know what I'm saying.
At the end of the day, we take the bye week,
we get healthy, we feel good, we come back.

Speaker 1 (20:47):
Bone win this game, win a couple in a row.
Go enjoy yourself, get even more healthy than go. On
the long run, it should be a fun atmosphere on
Sunday you are playing some awesome football right now.

Speaker 6 (20:59):
Man, Glad.

Speaker 1 (21:00):
It's one of my favorite stories of everybody in that
locker room for what you went through, how your career
is almost done, to battle your way back and to
be playing the kind of football that you're playing right now.
That's certainly a compliment to your work ethic, to who
you are, and you are playing some great football right now.
Keep it up, man, keep it up, and we'll have
John Boyle with everything on Seattle coming up next. Welcome

(21:25):
back to the twenty in the Huddle podcast. I am
very happy to off minute. John Boyle, the senior writer
for the Seahawks, does a great job covering everything Seattle.
Thanks for joining me, John, I appreciate it.

Speaker 6 (21:35):
Hey, thanks for having me. Tim happy to do it all.

Speaker 1 (21:37):
Right, let's start right here, because injuries are always, you know,
a huge part of every game. Obviously, the Lions are
dealing with some. They've already ruled out all pro center
Frank Ragnow for Monday Night. I'm sure Seattle defenders, especially
those guys up front, aren't too shaken up about that one.
But how is Seattle injury wise going into this this

(21:58):
matchup Monday Night? A huge one against two two really
good NFC teams.

Speaker 5 (22:03):
Yeah, you know, unfortunately for the Seahawks or fortunately for
the Lions, two of the guys who might want to
take advantage of an injury at center are Yeah, I'd
say questionable right now.

Speaker 6 (22:11):
We don't really know.

Speaker 5 (22:12):
We haven't seen an injury report yet, but Leonard Williams
and Byron Murphy, their first round pick this year, both
left last week's game with injuries. We have not really
gotten any update yet. Mike McDonald's mo so far as
to be as give as little information about injuries as
he's allowed to so, with no injury report when he
did his press commence yesterday, we have not heard anything

(22:33):
on those two, but the fact that they both left
the game and weren't able to return leaves some question
mark whether they'll be in there.

Speaker 6 (22:39):
So that's two of them now.

Speaker 5 (22:40):
The Seahawks are hoping to maybe get back Channon Nuosu,
who's one of their top outside linebackers. He hurt aney
in the preseason. He did come back and do a
little bit of work yesterday. And then Kenneth Walker, the
other big question mark, missed two games with an oblique injury,
and they're starting running back and they're hoping he can
maybe get back as well.

Speaker 1 (22:58):
When you talk about Kenneth Walker, you know, how different
is that offense between when Sharbono was that Sharbonoal's got
a step in there. I think he had ninety one
yards last week, you know, pretty productive performance. How are
they different? Does the offense change it all with one
or the other? They still do the same kind of things.

Speaker 5 (23:15):
You know, a lot of what they do, you know,
schematically will look the same, but the big different Like
sharbon is a really good player, like you said, he
had ninety one yards last week, two touchdowns, but he's
more of a physical downhill guy. You know, a lot
of that yard which came late in the game, as
you know, you hope when you have a physical running
game you can kind of wear on teams. His last
three runs of the game went for like thirteen, eleven
and ten yards, so finished really strong. The biggest factor

(23:38):
that I'm sorry, Ken Walker gives you is he's going
to be able to maybe make more out of a
play when it's not there, you know, if it's not
blocked up right.

Speaker 6 (23:46):
Like he's just such an elusive player.

Speaker 5 (23:49):
You know, I'm sure some of your fans might have
seen him play at Michigan State, and he can just
do some things where a play that another running back
might not get. You know, he'll get a couple of
yards and run into some defenders. Ken Walker is going
to make some dudes miss and just do something wild.
So you know, sometimes that can backfire you. Sometimes there's
you know, some negative players that come with that. But
he's a little better at making something out of nothing,

(24:10):
which you know, the Seahawks offensive line has not been
nearly as bad as people want to make it out
to you, but they have struggled with, you know, being consistent.
And you know, he's maybe gonna if he does get back,
he might be able to get some yardage that isn't
there for another back.

Speaker 1 (24:23):
You look at the NFC standings right now. You see
Minnesota at three and oh, you see Seeattle at three
and oh, just really, John, what's been the catalyst for
this three and oh start for this team? Some would say, yes,
you faceded on Miami team without two uh Bo Nicks
his first star, but look, you can only play the
people that in front of you, and you need to
go and win those games. And Seattle has done that
week in week out, they've looked pretty good doing it.

(24:45):
What's been the catalyst in your opinion to this three
and I'll start for them.

Speaker 5 (24:49):
I mean, it starts with their defense, which you know,
to your point, they haven't faced an offense like the
Lions yet, they haven't faced the quarterback as good as
Jared Goff yet. When the schedule came out, we thought
that Miami game would be the first big test, but then,
unfortun only two got hurt. So but you know, regardless
of who they're playing, I mean, we've seen backup quarterbacks
around the league and against Seattle in past years come
in and have good games. So they did what you

(25:09):
should do. You know, they help them to a field goal.
They played awesome in that game. They played really well
in the previous two games as well. I think I
saw stat they're the first team since the nineteen seventy
nine Steelers to hold three straight teams under one hundred
and fifty receiving yards and win all three games. So
they're they're I mean, their pass defense has not been
tested like it will be this week, but it's been phenomenal.

Speaker 6 (25:29):
The pass rush has been really good.

Speaker 5 (25:30):
I mean, everything you hope Mike McDonald would bring to
a defense they've done so far.

Speaker 6 (25:35):
Now is kind of the first real big test of it.

Speaker 5 (25:37):
But that's been the cows and then Gino Smith has
been you know, I'm not sure the line has not
been at its best yet. There's been too much pressure,
too many penalties, and Gino Smith without a real consistent
running game. They're on their third option at right tackle
right now, and he's been pretty phenomenal.

Speaker 1 (25:54):
Yeah, and that's I know one aspect that that Detroit
is is obviously looking and knowing that they have to
go in this game to try to stop Dan Campbell
even talked about it on Thursday about, you know, we
have to outdo the explosives in this game because that
passing a take attack and DK Metcalf and look, we've
seen it over the years. Seattle teams come in here.
You look at Gino last year, I think it was

(26:14):
three hundred and twenty three yards and two touchdowns, one
hundred and sixteen passer rating. He's looked great, and it'll
this one will be interesting for Detroit because I think
part of their offseason the big approach was, look, we've
got to try to limit the big plays in the
pass game that was their achilles heel last year, Seattle
exposed it. A lot of teams down this tretch exposed it.

(26:36):
You've got a brand new cornerback duo here. You've got
Brian Branch now playing safety along with Kirby. Joseph is
what's been so good about that Seattle passing attack and
Geno Smith that Detroit has talked about it this week.
That's number one. That's what we have to stop. Going
into this game. Easier said than done when when you're
facing DK Metcalf and them, just wow, why have they

(26:58):
been so good? It seems like Gene it was just
kind of really clicking on all cylinders right now.

Speaker 5 (27:03):
Yeah, I mean he's I think the new offensive coordinator,
Ryan Grebb, who came over from the University of Washington.
I think what he's doing schematically suits Gino Smith very well.
It's it's been so far a nice mix of you know,
they've been able to use the short path, quick passing
game when they need it. New England they couldn't really
run the ball very well, so they essentially turned short
passes to Jackson Smith and jig but into their running game,

(27:25):
and then they compliment that with some of the explosive
stuff to DK Metcalf especially, but really all three of
those guys, that that trio of Tyler Lockett, Smith and
jig But and Metcalf is just such a really dynamic trio.
And then I just think, you know, a lot of
the credit goes to the way Geno Smith is playing
right now the whole all of training camp.

Speaker 6 (27:43):
He just looks so sharp.

Speaker 5 (27:44):
You know, he's had a couple turnovers that aren't entirely
his fault, but he maybe hasn't made the best decision
under pressure, things like that brown wing. He's getting hit,
so he wants to clean that up. But otherwise he's
been about as good as possible. So it's just I
think it's kind of a nice fit of player and
scheme and then some great weapons around him as well.

Speaker 1 (28:01):
Yeah, to your point, I think that's the best receiving
trio in football. And you can't convince me otherwise with
with with what they do and how they can beat
you in really three different ways. When defensively, when you
when you get to Tarik Wollen and Devin Witherspoon, is
that one of the better cornerback combos do you think
in this league?

Speaker 6 (28:19):
I yeah, I think definitely.

Speaker 5 (28:20):
It's funny this year so far, they haven't really been
tested that much, so you know, statistically, I've been a
lot of chances for takeaways and pass breakups because I mean,
a they've just been covering stuff so well that people
aren't testing it. You know, if you look at any
advanced mentrics that just show like coverage or pass the
rating when targeted.

Speaker 6 (28:35):
Those guys have been awesome.

Speaker 5 (28:36):
But you know, Reek did get a pick in the
first game, but otherwise they're not getting tested that much.
But that those two and then also the name you
didn't say, but the third guy there is Trey Brown,
who Lions fans might remember from ending Jared Goff's interceptionalist
streak last year with the pick six. So yeah, that
that group is really talented. Devin Witherspoon has just been

(28:56):
phenomenal from the day he got here last year. And
again he hasn't gotten the chances to really do a
lot statistically yet just because teams aren't bringing the ball
his way. But he's such a big catalyst for that defense.
He can blet, he can play, you know, they use
him at nickel and outside. He's he's such an amic player. So, yeah,
that cornerback group. You know, we just talked about the
receiving trio. I would put that cornerback right up there

(29:19):
with you know, receiver is probably one of the deepest
and most talented position groups on this team.

Speaker 1 (29:24):
You know, we've talked about a lot of names, a
lot of big names from that Seattle team. Is there
anybody maybe who Lions fans might not recognize, you know
when when when they first hear his name, but but
could be a guy that has an impact on that
game Monday night. Maybe a guy who's been playing some
pretty good football and been one of the reasons why
Seattle's on that hot start too.

Speaker 5 (29:42):
Yeah, i'd say, you know, on both sides of the ball.
One of the new safeties they signed free agency here,
Rayshawn Jenkins, you know, a veteran guy has been a
starter but hasn't necessarily been a big name, and he's.

Speaker 6 (29:52):
Been really good.

Speaker 5 (29:53):
You know, one of the best things this defense has
done so far is like if a team's trying to
check it down a short passing game, they've just been
flying to the ball and snuffing things out with good
tackling and ray Sewn Jenkins and just one of those
safeties that comes flying downhill and makes plays. So he's
been really good, maybe better than I think a lot
of X fans. They didn't know who he was when
he got here. He wasn't again he was the starter,

(30:15):
but not a huge name. And then other side of
the ball, especially with this matchup Stone Forsyth. He's their
right tackle right now because of injuries. Two guys ahead
of him are hurt and a line fans know, right
tackles have their handful against the lines. I think I
went back and watched all four and a half sacks
that Aiden Hetchson had had the other week. We're off
the right side or the left side of the defense,
right side of the line. So you know, one thing

(30:36):
Stone has going for him is he came in last
years had both their tackles hurt in Week one, right
before they went to Detroit, so they had to put
backups into both tackle spots, and he started left tackle
in that game but played pretty well. And he's been
playing since coming He's come in since they they had
an injury right tackle in the opener, so he's basically
played two and a half games this year and just

(30:57):
kind of building that confidence so they know it's gonna
be tough. But you know that those tackles did a
good job last year in tough circumstances, and I think
they can take a little confidence from that, you know
when you.

Speaker 1 (31:06):
Look at Detroit. Yeah, obviously we talked about it. You
know that Seattle defense is going to be tested, especially
in the air, more than they have been in the
previous three weeks in this one. Obviously. You know Detroit
wants to run the football hundred and eighty eight yards
against the Cardinals last year and then defensively their top
five in league stopping the run. So from your opinion,
what's what's the big key for this game for Seattle?
Go on the road, a tough environment, a national stage,

(31:29):
Monday night football, and come away with a win. What
do they have to do? In John Boyle's opinion.

Speaker 5 (31:34):
Yeah, you know, it's funny, we just talked about this.
I record a podcast that we do on our side
of it, and kind of the same topic. Was like
you always say, you know, go on the road, establish
the run, and yet I go back and look at
how Seahawks won in Detroit each the last two years,
and it was by Geno Smith just playing his ass
off and throwing for three hundred some yard. So yes,
they want to run the game, run the ball. But
to me, it's if they can protect Geno Smith a

(31:55):
little bit and give him some time to get the
ball to those weapons. That's a big key on offense
and then defensively, I want to see him get some
takeaway as I saw.

Speaker 6 (32:03):
You know, Detroit.

Speaker 5 (32:04):
They've been sloppy with the ball, but four turnovers in
three games, so there's been some opportunity. And of all
the things the Seahawks defense has done well, they have
not had a lot of takeaways yet, and part of
that's been teams aren't really testing them much. But i'd
love to see, you know, from a Seahawks standpoint, I
think if they can get the ball away from Detroit,
because look, you're not gonna stop Detroit as easily as
you stopped the two lists Miami Dolphins or the Patriots

(32:26):
with Jacoby Brissette. Like, it's a different test. So I
think the way you can maybe make a difference on
the road in tough environment is to get a takeaway
or two.

Speaker 1 (32:33):
Yeah, it should be a great matchup. Obviously, a great
atmosphere Monday night in Detroit, John, I appreciate you taking
the time so much great stuff. As always, safe light
home and for all you at home. Be sure to
check out the twenty Hot twenty minue in the Huddle
podcast next week as well.

Speaker 6 (32:49):
Right, thanks Tim, thanks for me
