Speaker 1 (00:05):
All right, a long time coming, you know, getting back
out into pads, starting right up front, you know, with
the run game and just playing a physical nature of ball.
Challenge the guys this morning to come out here and
to capture the style of play that they're acceptable, that
they're that is acceptable to them, and that's the thing
is to just continue to push them to say what
we want to be a physical team. We want to

(00:25):
make sure that it all starts with the run game
on both sides of it. And uh, just challenging them
that way, you know, and I thought they responded well.
It was great, you know, just to kind of get
some different movement patterns going on with the pads and
and I'm excited to you know, go back and watch
the one on ones on the other side. We have
some pass for our stuff down there on one end
and just watching guys battle. Just love this time of

(00:48):
the year.

Speaker 2 (00:50):
For the end of practice. Obviously, Trevid and Tuba, what
did you see there and what did you talk to
them about kind of afterward?

Speaker 1 (00:55):
It was football? Yeah, playing football. We got tow the line,
we got to play physical and a lot of times,
you know, it's not personal, it's just football, you know.
And so guys will respond passionately, you know, and they
don't like getting knocked on their butt, you know, they
take it personal. But you know, there was a lot
of physical play throughout practice, So that's gonna happen as
a result of that, not at all. No, we you know,

(01:18):
as quick as I could get the music back going
and feed off of that energy, you know, I wanted
to make sure the guys can have the ability to
have plays and sometimes it's gonna be you know, emotional,
passionate plays. Can we go to the next one? Can
we get back to football? So it was great.

Speaker 3 (01:33):
Do you want to see just a little bit of
that as long as everybody stays safe.

Speaker 1 (01:37):
Yeah, I just want to see a physical brand of ball.
You know, the guys should be flying to the ball
full speed and have to make those decisions on how
to take care of our guys when they're in vulnerable spots.
But you know it's gonna be physical, you know, inside,
it's gonna be physical on the on the back end
of it as well, you know. And so I want
them to push it to the limit, you know, and
we'll pull them back from there. But we cannot we

(01:58):
cannot hesitate and create bad habits by not finishing as
you can. You know, you've you've seen trends. You know,
if we don't capture the physical nature of this game,
it takes games to kind of get your tackling down
and get all those things. So we have to make
it come alive. This camp.

Speaker 3 (02:13):
Offensive lineman in particular, look forward to a daylight today
so that they can negate some of the advantages the
other guys.

Speaker 1 (02:19):
I have absolutely, you know, it's like it's like having
handlebars out there when they're shoulder pads. You know, there's
there's a lot more surface to grip inside for the
old lineman where they can really get in there and steer,
and you know, for the for the defensive lineman. You know,
it's about pad level, and a lot of those guys
operate better once they get behind their shoulder pads, you know,
and and are able to find edges and to work

(02:39):
on edges.

Speaker 3 (02:40):
If Davos Sweeney was here today, yeah, what do you
think about that?

Speaker 1 (02:45):
Oh, it was awesome. I'm so glad he came to
join us, you know, our first day of PADS. I
really admire Coach Sweney, you know, just over the years
just watching the programs that he's built, the type of
football that they play, you know, so I don't get
to hang out with them enough. So I love when
things like this work out. I can, you know, still
three to five minutes and pick his brain, you know,
just on building culture and pushing the guys, you know,

(03:06):
and and all the things that that I know he's
done so well for so long.

Speaker 2 (03:09):
Hunters made like a lot of high like plays out
here the first SUITEK. But it seemed like a really
strong day for Jalen Coker and t Ac. Yeah. How
have you seen them kind of find their footing this summer?
Getting back to it?

Speaker 1 (03:19):
Yeah, it's just about opportunity, you know. And as a
as a former receivers coach, I look at all the
guys away from the ball, you know, so a lot
of times, you know, you kind of get focused on
where the ball goes and who caught it or who didn't,
you know, But there's a lot of good stuff happening
away from the ball.

Speaker 2 (03:33):
Uh. J T.

Speaker 1 (03:33):
Sanders had a nice day to day, but the last
couple of days didn't get a lot of targets. But
he's winning, you know, he looks fast, he looks explosive,
you know, you talk about Jalen. Jalen's had such a
great camp so far. You know, today the ball found him,
you know, but even in the couple of days where
the ball might have been going somewhere else, he's bursting
at the top, he's creating separation, he's finding edges, you know,
And it was good to see t Mac just rise

(03:54):
to the challenge. You know, the the DBS are challenging
him every single time, you know, and and he's he's
inviting that, you know, and just learning more and more
about him and how he responds, you know, and a
tough one on one rep to start, comes back, catches
the deep goal ball, you know, and just like this,
to see him just kind of stay even processing what happened,
you know, and just continuing to evolve each practice has

(04:16):
been really cool.

Speaker 3 (04:17):
Henter returning some punts or fielding punts. Yeah, is that
a case where as he's like doing more and more
at receiver, you start thinking about, well, you know, if
he's going to be on this team, let's see if
he can return punts too.

Speaker 1 (04:31):
Absolutely, Let's figure out all the ways that he could
potentially help this team, you know, And he's been a
punt returner in his past. You know, he's got a
great feel for it, and so like what more can
you do? You know, And that that's for all the
guys too, you know, just trying to see if we
can depend on them in special teams, which will be
a huge thing for them.

Speaker 4 (04:46):
David can't be easy a whole year in the NFL
and trying to make this comeback.

Speaker 1 (04:53):
How is how do you feel like he's looked and
who's that again?

Speaker 4 (04:58):
Oh?

Speaker 1 (04:58):
Yeah, you don't.

Speaker 3 (04:59):
Wait for the game for you.

Speaker 2 (05:00):
How does he look?

Speaker 1 (05:01):
And he like NFL shape, He looks like the hunter
that I remember, you know, and I I watch him
just kind of his routecraft, understanding coverage, his leverage, how
to attack things, you know, and like it really happened
in the spring where you could see him kind of
getting his legs back underneath him and probably halfway through
OTA's all of a sudden, you know, he's he's you know,
sudden and he's making his breaks and he's a guy

(05:24):
that Andy really likes throwing to right now, you know.
So it's been really cool to see that.

Speaker 3 (05:28):
Dave was Sam Martin fell back as primary holder of
field goals yeah, because that allow you guys going to
move closer as far as that competition goes. Making decision
between Matthew and Ryan.

Speaker 1 (05:37):
I mean, first of all, let's give it up for Andy.
Dalton did a great job, you know for the first
four days. But it is good to have Sam back
out there. Just you know, the speed in which he
gets the ball down. You know. Now the guys can
you know, see who they're gonna have as a holder,
and and it'll give us a little bit more information,
you know, but we'll take this thing all the way
through into games to kind of see how the guys
can help.

Speaker 2 (05:56):
Us from an offensive coaching perspective. Having a guy like
Andy who can be accurate and just consistent, how much
does that help you evaluating that second team group, especially
if you're mixing a matching personnel.

Speaker 1 (06:06):
I mean it's huge, you know, because with your second group,
you know, you have, like you have tiers of guys
that are kind of working in and so as Andy
distributes that, you can see the guys show up. You know,
you can see the backs, you can see you know,
all the all the young receivers kind of coming in
and making plays. And and it also gives us an
opportunity to say, you know, if we didn't get a
play to j T Sanders with the first group, or

(06:28):
say he didn't get the target, we can always throw
him into Andy's group and see if we can replicate
that and create it. So we can, you know, give
him a look at it. So Andy's been fantastic that way.

Speaker 3 (06:38):
We saw JT was slow to get up later on there.

Speaker 1 (06:41):
Yeah, I don't know. We'll check in on him. It
looked like he got took a shot in the groin
right there on. You know, we're asking our guys to
punch the ball, you know, sometimes take it a little
too literally. So he went down in a heap. But
I think he'll be all right, So we'll check in
on him.

Speaker 3 (06:53):
Dame, who is catching your eye and that defense or
front group.

Speaker 1 (06:58):
I would say first and foremost Turk Wharton. Great to
have Derek back, you know, but I think just kind
of the the style and energy that he's working with,
A Sean looks great. A Shan has worked, you know,
you can tell this summer, you can tell this spring.
Just really taking care of his body and and the
way that we're repping a Sean right now to allow
him to get in there, get his work. We don't

(07:19):
have to overwork him. We've got a lot of guys
we got to look at you know. But he's looked
really explosive. He's playing with length, and so I'm really
excited about that group.

Speaker 3 (07:28):
We have seen a lot of Cam Jackson. Yeah, it's
that is he is working up to speed or what.

Speaker 1 (07:34):
Yeah, yeah, he's he's working his way in. You know,
he's got a lot of work in front of him,
you know, in terms of just playing our techniques properly,
pushing him that way, pushing him to get his pad
level down. It's a great group to be around because
we got a lot of veteran players in there with
that play with great technique and leverage and so challenging
Cam that way, throwing dosing him the right way, throwing

(07:56):
him out there to get a good look at him,
you know, and and his reps will keep going, you know,
up as we continue camp.

Speaker 3 (08:01):
Some things that said about Hunter said he just looks
like Mormal out there, like you were late, like you.

Speaker 4 (08:08):
Going out there to play such ball.

Speaker 3 (08:09):
In terms of the superman who looks at him and all, yeah,
how bare is that?

Speaker 1 (08:13):
Is that close to what you say or yeah, it's
a special competitive brain that Hunter has. You know, I
think some guys they get better and better the more
it feels like real ball, you know, where they continue
to play with the with an awareness eyes and feet.
You know, that's kind of the name of the game
at receiver, you know, and you don't see a drop
off whether we're going in seven on seven or one

(08:33):
on ones. You get to the team periods and it's
the same speed of play that he's done for a
really long time.

Speaker 2 (08:39):
Dave T Mac had the one crossing route where he
got opened pretty quickly kind of placed the end zone.
We've talked about how his speed's kind of understated, at
least from an analysis standpoint. Are you seeing the speed
as he's kind of rubbing up in camp?

Speaker 1 (08:55):
He plays fast? You know, that was kind of going
back to his film, you know, from Arizona. Is his
place beat is what you look at, you know, and yes,
we take you know, we uh, we take into consideration
what the forty time looks like. He ran a four
or five. You know, he's fast, but he's a tall guy.
A lot of times those guys, their stride builds up
as they get going, you know, particularly when he's running

(09:15):
across the field. You know that he can pretty much
separate and run away from anybody, you know, regardless of
what the forty Times says. You know, So it's good.
I know we're doing our job, and I know that
Bryce is throwing the ball with accuracy when we can
get him catching the ball in full stride, so which
is a beautiful play by Bryce, a little bit of pressure,
he kind of had to move off the spot, get
the ball out quickly, and so just a really well

(09:36):
executed play you were.

Speaker 3 (09:36):
At referenced earlier the rap against Mike jack early in
the one on ones? Are are you guys wonning that matchup?
So Tech can get used to that physical press. I mean,
it's because he seems like he had always getting matched
against Mike Jaggs.

Speaker 1 (09:56):
That's Mike, you know. So Mike, Mike wants to go
good on good all the time. And I love that,
you know. I think you know. The thing I tell
the guys is we make us and the guy across
from you will determine how far you go and in
your readiness for games. So I just love it. I
love it. They're battling every day. The battles up front
with Rob and d Lou and Turk. Bobby is gonna

(10:18):
be coming out there pretty soon, you know, uh Icky
and Timo, you know, going against DJ Want and Pat Jones, Princely,
Nick s Gorton, have to having to go against veteran tackles.
All these matchups are gonna make us who we are.
So I love when those things kind of happen that way.
And I love just the competitive nature of Mike. He's like,
I'm going against him, you know, I want to I

(10:39):
want to battle against this guy. I want to work
on my.

Speaker 4 (10:41):
Game, Dave, Bryce went through a lot last year. What
what what was your takeaway of this season last year?
And you know what oppressed you the most with him
coming through finishing strong wag.

Speaker 3 (10:53):
And then secondly, what do you what do you want
to see what most?

Speaker 2 (10:55):
What areas you most want to see every this year?

Speaker 1 (10:58):
I just want to see Bryce continue to master the
defense uses tools. He's doing a great job there getting
to some of his signals and checks versus the right looks.
He's really dialed in that way. Certainly with the run game,
you know, making sure that we're we're going to the
right spots and we have a bunch of alerts built
in that way. He's doing a great job of carrying
our system to where Brad and I are sitting there

(11:18):
on a day off yesterday, like what else can we
throw in? What little wrinkle can we add? You know,
we're still in install mode at this point, but you know,
Bryce is giving us the ability to continue to expand
what we're doing. And that's the high hope really.

Speaker 2 (11:30):
In the first part.

Speaker 4 (11:30):
Like what impressing most about.

Speaker 1 (11:32):
Him, uh, just just his leadership. You know, he led
the whole way through. That's who he is. He's continuing
to do that. He checks in with his guys constantly.
There's constant feedback in between periods when he's out there,
he's just talking to his guys, thinks he wants a
little bit differently, you know, they're always kind of fine
tuning stuff. And just his like his his steady outlook.

(11:53):
You know, he's just a competitor. He loves the moments
that kind of crescendo into this five to five drill,
you know, where he's got to make a play and
he just thrives there because he stays the same And
so I just love that about him.

Speaker 4 (12:05):
M hmm.
