Speaker 1 (00:00):
Hope on for the review.
Speaker 2 (00:07):
What a great day.
Speaker 3 (00:08):
Uh Yeah, we've been building and working out and training
for this to get back on the field and and
just get this thing started, you know, going against offense
versus defense and uh being able to fly around and there.
Of course, you know with the time of year that
it is, the guy's got to be able to you know,
work full speed and take care of each other.
Speaker 2 (00:24):
And I felt like we did that today.
Speaker 3 (00:25):
So really exciting stuff, fun to watch, you know, some
of the guys that were the continuity of just what
to expect from a practice, and then on top of that,
just as they're setting expectation to see this young talent
come into this group and we talk about challenging our roster,
you know, and to see some of the guys really
competing out there.
Speaker 2 (00:44):
And it was really fun back.
Speaker 1 (00:46):
To this time last year when it must have seemed
at least a little bit overwhelming, and how different it
is this year, sort of having everything in place and
sort of knowing exactly what you want to do.
Speaker 3 (00:57):
Yeah, I mean it's everything from the flow of practice,
you know, to blow the horns, you know, and everybody
going over to set the second drill and and you know,
sprinting over there to get set and just all the
little things that just feel a lot more in place now.
And then of course you talk about you know, the
x's and o's, the playbook stuff, and you know, just
(01:19):
getting getting breaking the huddle the right way, you know,
and shifts and motions and wording and all the things
that come with it. It just it feels like we
can just focus on working and practicing versus the format
and structure of it. Jalen Coker worked off to the side,
Derek worked off to the side.
Speaker 2 (01:37):
Taylor. Are those all injury related? Yeah?
Speaker 3 (01:40):
They are, and so you know, uh, Coker just getting
him as strong and fast as possible before we throw
him out there in a competitive setting. You know, just
some some soft tissue things that he's been working through,
and he's crushing it right now. He's had a good
i think week and a half of really you know,
he's he's got the volume there, you know, but we
want to make sure and just playing it on the
on the safe side right now before we put him
(02:01):
out there. Derek, of course, just working back in to
things after the knee and he's feeling great though, and
he's feeling more and more confident with the change of
direction body on body, you know, getting some some weight
bearing type of things that way. So they're all progressing,
they're all getting after it. No setbacks right now. Guys
are just taking leaps every day.
Speaker 2 (02:19):
So if I can follow up. Yeah, DJ Wantam wasn't
out there, neither was Tommy. I know, yes, ots or
voluntary what's the yeah, So you know, DJ just his
back kind of flared up on him.
Speaker 3 (02:29):
So we're just trying to get that thing calm down
because you don't want it to kind of snowball into
other areas. With that, Tommy did have surgery on his
back last week, a successful surgery that was you know,
we were kind of thinking about it, talking about looking
at timelines and all that, and just felt like for
him to give him the the you know, he's twenty
five years old. You know, let's let's get this thing
(02:51):
while he's young and strong and be able to you know,
just get him back on the right track.
Speaker 2 (02:55):
So we just decided to do that.
Speaker 3 (02:57):
Now looking forward, you know, level of no, he will
not be so we fully expect timing to be ready
for training camp and all that. What's your level of
confidence and what Brice can be now compared to what
it was when you came in last year.
Speaker 2 (03:11):
And didn't really know it.
Speaker 3 (03:12):
Honestly, my expectations are just wide open, you know, I
think especially as he goes in there with command like
he's been doing this offseason and and really just leading
the guys, you know. And there were some great plays
out there, some great timing throws, but also just the
level of comfort, like we talked about with the offense,
knowing the words, making different tweaks, and.
Speaker 2 (03:31):
He's a part of that process.
Speaker 3 (03:32):
These are conversations that we've been having with him, you know,
going back to the end of last season. You know
that we want to implement and and uh, you know,
just be able to, like especially in the past game,
you know, become Bryce young, offense become you know, this
this collective thing and getting the chemistry going. So I
feel really confident about just what I saw today, especially
(03:53):
going against the defense and uh, just the speed that
we were playing with.
Speaker 1 (03:57):
How much more stuff have you put into the fens
from last year that's new this year?
Speaker 3 (04:03):
Subtle changes, you know. I think we have a great
foundation of things that that was the first year was
to get the core established, to get the words and
all those things in place, and then and then just
some adjustments based on our skill, uh, the skill position players,
the runners, the receivers, you.
Speaker 2 (04:18):
Know, j T.
Speaker 3 (04:19):
And then you know, just kind of becoming us and
honing in on some of the things we saw on
the self scout of like these are these are concepts
we feel really confident with that we run really well.
We have the adjustments off of it. So now it's
about just adding little tools, uh, things that Bryce can
do at the line of scrimmage, things that he can
tweak and change based on what the defense is doing.
Speaker 1 (04:39):
I have you made any headway on either the Texans
or Steeler destroyed practices.
Speaker 3 (04:45):
Texans, We're gonna go down to Houston and practice with
them for a day leading into that game.
Speaker 2 (04:51):
That'd be a great one. You know, it's warm here.
Speaker 3 (04:54):
It's really warm in Houston, and so that you know,
I've heard, you know, I was in Tampa for a year,
but I've also heard Houston just you know, gives you
that good work and the humidity and the heat will
be great, especially opening up at Jacksonville, you know, so
it'll be a great opportunity for us to.
Speaker 2 (05:08):
Get on the road.
Speaker 3 (05:08):
I always I like these moments too, because you travel
a little earlier to have a joint practice, so there's
just more time at the hotel for the players to connect,
the coaches to connect and all that. So it's kind
of a team building thing as well as just it's
a good change up, you know, with with the Browns
coming in here and then for us to go down there.
We go against each other every day. It's great. It
just kind of you know, brings fresh life into the
(05:29):
competitive environment and you know, so I love these joint practices.
Speaker 2 (05:34):
Will take advantage of that. And not with the Steelers though,
for the.
Speaker 4 (05:37):
Sorry, how did you see t Mac you know, transition
from rookie mini camp and take what he learned there
to OTAs.
Speaker 2 (05:44):
So far, Yeah, it's just all about being comfortable, you know.
Speaker 3 (05:46):
It's about getting him out of this place where he's
got to think a lot about what he's doing and
all that. And we're still there, you know, but he's
working hard, and he had a great day today, you know.
He he got to meet Mike Jack and j. C.
Horne today and and he wonts some lossome That's that's good,
you know, and that's how we become us. That's we
make us better by bringing our best every day, and
(06:07):
so it was really good to see him out there competing.
Speaker 4 (06:11):
What are your.
Speaker 3 (06:11):
Expectitions for the inside linebacker room and Trevin Walls? How
does he look coming back from a rehab and will
he step into a starters from him?
Speaker 2 (06:20):
We'll see this.
Speaker 3 (06:22):
All this stuff is wide open, you know, so I
won't make a comment about that, but the competition is
really and it's live. He looks great. He did a
great job in the rehab. He was cleared i think
last week fully, and he's looked really.
Speaker 2 (06:34):
Strong and fast. I mean, he's huge. He I really
expect him to make an impact.
Speaker 3 (06:39):
But that's a good room, you know, and that was
our goals to kind of just continue to add great
players to each room, to challenge each other, you know,
and and to create that competition that we want.
Speaker 2 (06:50):
So Xavior makes some place today. A couple of crossing routes, specifically.
Speaker 3 (06:55):
What do you think the arrival of Team mag will
mean for or save your season and development? Well, for Xavier,
what I see is a year into the system, just
the speed that he's playing with now, with the level
of comfort he has with what we're doing. When I
see him smiling, I know he's in a good space
(07:15):
and he really has just been enjoying this this offseason,
working hard. He looks big and fast, and I think
you know, with team at coming into the room again,
it's just options. You know, it opens things up and
it creates a little bit of balance, you know, where
the field doesn't tilt.
Speaker 2 (07:29):
One way or the other.
Speaker 3 (07:30):
So you have two guys who can make it happen
outside and that's a good thing.
Speaker 1 (07:33):
You know, what do you look forward to to see
if a guy has stopped thinking, has stopped sort of
getting in his own headers able to be more reactive.
Speaker 2 (07:41):
You can see it.
Speaker 3 (07:42):
You can see them break the huddle and if a
guy's kind of looking down at his shoelaces thinking about
where he's got to line up and what was that
play again, you know that there's still some room and
we got a lot of guys that are there right now.
When you see a guy break the huddle quickly and
get lined up fast with this attacking mentality, you know
he's there.
Speaker 2 (07:58):
He's comfortable.
Speaker 3 (08:00):
And then of course after the snap, when you can
see a guy just reacting and just playing ball, it's
like if you go if you go to a park
and you watch people playing pickup basketball, they ain't a
lot of thinking going on. They're just playing. And that's
the feel. When you can see guys just kind of
like creating on the fly. You know they're comfortable with
what they're doing, and that's when you can start to
grow things. You can grow your game, you can grow
(08:21):
your concepts when guys own the basics of it.
Speaker 1 (08:25):
Shawn Smith Waite making a lot of plays today. What
have you seen from him growing from year one, year two?
Speaker 3 (08:29):
Yeah, you know, this is really cool because from the
first time we got Shaw out here and this is
for speaking about Demani Richardson as well. These are guys
from rookie mini caamp for an entire year that have
been so conscientious about their preparation, their body readiness, all
these things. They are the first guys on the field,
they're rolling things out, they're kind of working on their technique,
(08:49):
getting their body ready. They're the last guys off the
field catching jugs. Hey give me that release one more time.
And all of that hard work is paying off for
Shaw because he's finding himself in the right positions or
right situations when the huddle breaks, he's talking and he's
just really into it. He loves football. Those are the
kind of guys that we love bringing in here.
Speaker 4 (09:08):
Dave, what's have been like to be around Hunter Renfro
so far? And just what's your quick assessment of physically
where he is coming back? Right?
Speaker 3 (09:15):
Yeah, I would say like weekly because of the muscle
memory of a guy who's been a really good player.
You see weekly he just makes these huge strides just
getting his feet under him. And I can tell too,
just having coach wide receivers especially, but he's got a
lot in his game releases, top of the route, set
up avoidance, different things where he can double up stuff
at the top of his routes and you can see
(09:36):
him kind of working through his inventory, you know, kind.
Speaker 2 (09:39):
Of his his tool bag, if you will.
Speaker 3 (09:41):
And it's been really cool to just watch him, you know,
as his feet get underneath them and the explosiveness and
all the little things show up. It's it's been really
fun to see coming off the season that he did.
Speaker 2 (09:52):
Have you seen that translate not only on.
Speaker 4 (09:54):
The build it off, like has there been more ownership
just in the lack of the head of practice.
Speaker 3 (09:58):
With the rest of the guy I would say, I
would say he's been like that from the beginning. You know,
he's been a guy that wants to know what's the
messaging who are we gonna be? And he's been just
kind of a sounding board for me as far as
how we're gonna what's our mentality, you know, what's the
personality and the philosophy of this football team. And he's
really just had my back this whole time. And so
he's been consistent that way, you know, and maybe it
(10:21):
means more, you know, as he's established himself, you know,
as one of our leaders, maybe it means more to
the rest of the group. Like here's a guy, See
how he works, see how he performs that. He gains
more respect from people as he does that and he leads.
But you'll hear him out there, you know, from last
year to this year. You know, this is our first practice.
He called a group up before we started our walkthroughs, like,
(10:42):
you know, making sure everyone had the focus. You know
that everything we do, every rep is so important starting
from this walkthrough and then for sure we get to
the practice, you know, to kick it into high gear.
So interaction of McMillan annex Savior or how they've kind
of gotten along and talked to to that.
Speaker 2 (11:00):
It's a great fit.
Speaker 3 (11:01):
These are two guys that just love to play. They
love to play football. You can feel the joy on them.
You can see them even in routes on air. They'll
catch a ball, they'll put it away burst and then
they're looking for the other one. They're throwing it across
the field playing catch. So I just it's such a
great He fits right into this room, you know, and
for two young guys, you know that that we hope
(11:23):
and expect to be here for a long time. It's
about enjoying it, you know, it's about having fun. This
game is meant to be fun. And they're also wired
the right way where they're grinding, they're working hard, and
they're studying. It means something to them. But I just
love seeing their personalities come to life.
Speaker 1 (11:38):
On somebody you anticipate kind of playing in the box,
some hand in the back, or be more in the
box most git time.
Speaker 2 (11:48):
We there's a couple of things we can do with him.
Speaker 3 (11:50):
I don't want to get into the specifics of it,
but he's such a good blitzer. He can play in
the back half and he's you know, we played against
him last year third game, and he's a lot to
handle from a receiver standpoint and tight end standpoint.
Speaker 2 (12:04):
He for trying to block him, so he's very versatile.
It's why we targeted him.
Speaker 3 (12:08):
It's why we wanted it made a point to get
him here because he can open up parts of our
defense that we're excited about.
Speaker 4 (12:15):
Dave, how has that the center competition been so far
in like the early stages, and how Corbett and may
Ise kind of up their game or at least work
together with that.
Speaker 3 (12:25):
You know, for that room, I think it's such a
rare thing. We talk about teams changing. We brought everybody
back in the offensive line room and added a couple
of young guys. So they worked great and they understand
we came into the scene. They both understand it's a competition,
you know, too early to really give anybody an edge
right now until we start patting up and you know,
hitting and moving.
Speaker 2 (12:45):
People and doing all that.
Speaker 3 (12:46):
But they're both doing a great job communicating, getting up
to the line, talking and working together. So they're doing
a great job and that whole group, you know, to
come out even from from phase two where we were
on the field to watch the continent of the drill
work with Goody and Joe just working through all the things.
The guys know what to expect, they get right to work,
and they're kind of like burning through these minutes of
(13:08):
individual like what else can we work on?
Speaker 2 (13:10):
You know?
Speaker 3 (13:10):
So, uh, it's a really good, good group, you know.
And uh and Austin certainly, you know, is is the
guy that you know won the job last year and
sees himself as that leader. And Caid came in and
did such a great job, So you know, we have
two really good options there. But I really love the
whole the way the whole unit's working as well.
