Speaker 1 (00:00):
Upon for the review. Jeff Hawkins from the Charlotte Post,
good luck and congratulations on the pick. I see you
are listed on your bio at two eighty five, but
I saw a video of you working out and you
look significantly slimmer. Can you talk about your off season

(00:21):
conditioning and changing your body type and how it will
help in the NFL?

Speaker 2 (00:26):
Thanks, yes, sir, man I appreciate that and happy to
be here. But yeah, man, I was two eighty five
beginning of the season. I kind of dropped down a
couple after the first couple of games. I was like
two seventy five left the end of the season to
seventy five. Kind of got to my training facility and
wanted to get down to two sixty and just was

(00:48):
on a great new nutrition plan and you know, learning
how to eat right and things of that nature, and
you know, getting the right amount of sleep and things
of that nature. Just you know, having great you know
resources and facility and you know them educating me is
the big reason and change of body.

Speaker 1 (01:05):
How do you think losing the weight and will help
in the NFL?

Speaker 3 (01:10):
I think a lot.

Speaker 2 (01:11):
You know, I'm a younger player, so you know, just
growing into my body, you know, doing those right muscles,
you know, getting stronger. Understand my body. I think it
would help a lot. You know, I'm quicker, I'm just faster,
I'm stronger, you know, better conditioned. I just think it's
going to help me a lot in the long term.

Speaker 3 (01:30):
Hey, thank you, good luck, sir, thank.

Speaker 4 (01:32):
You, congratulations. I'm Mike K from the Charlotte Observer. Welcome
to the Panthers. Nick, you don't turn twenty one until August, Like,
has it sunk in that you're going to be a
professional football player and be donning an NFL jersey and
going to an NFL training camp before you can even drink?

Speaker 3 (01:52):
Yes, sir, I mean, you know, I've always dreamed of
this moment.

Speaker 2 (01:55):
You know, I think I'm ready, and uh, you know,
I'm just excited, you know, to be so young and
be blessed to be able to put and be put
in this position.

Speaker 3 (02:04):
Sir.

Speaker 4 (02:04):
Obviously have you spoken to e J yet?

Speaker 3 (02:09):
You know in there.

Speaker 4 (02:12):
He's known for wanting guys with like, you know, long
arms and heavy hands and all that stuff. How do
you feel like you would define your style of play as.

Speaker 3 (02:23):
An edge rusher?

Speaker 2 (02:25):
Yes, sir, I think just a you know, a resilient guy,
you know, coming to the game, you know, with great
game plans. Uh, really good understanding of how to rush
and things like that. I think I'm very instinctive player
while also you know, being a very smart player. You
know you can see I'm thinking on the field, and
you know, I think I'm very physical.

Speaker 3 (02:45):
So uh, you know, I think I'll fit right in.
Thanks nice, meaning you, yes, sir, you too. I appreciate it.

Speaker 5 (02:54):
All right.

Speaker 6 (02:54):
We will go to David Newton, followed by Alex and
then Mike Salarte and over to Cassidy.

Speaker 7 (03:01):
Hey, Nick, David Newton with ESPN dot com. Did you
get advice from teams that you needed to drop the weight?
I mean, was that something you did with your own
your trainer.

Speaker 2 (03:11):
Yeah, it was just one to be you know, tighter,
one to be you know, look better and you know,
feel better, and that's all it was.

Speaker 7 (03:20):
Okay, And I mean, your your sack production at Purdue
last year the year before was ten and five last year,
So did you feel like you needed to get quicker
to get back to that level where you were playing
at Purdue?

Speaker 2 (03:33):
No, sir, I just think you know, I was different
different styles of defense. So different needs and just you know,
knowing like my body, I'm older now, you know, I'm
twenty you know, going into that twenty one year old body,
I don't need to have all that weight to be
able to set the edge.

Speaker 3 (03:49):
I'm more like.

Speaker 7 (03:51):
And what player maybe in the league now or been
in the league that you kind of most model your
game after.

Speaker 2 (03:57):
You know, I can't really say like like like one person,
but you know I really loved like Brandon Graham and
guy's like White Freeny and things like that. Uh but
I just you know, I try to you know, take
as much none from all types.

Speaker 3 (04:09):
Of edge rushers. You know.

Speaker 7 (04:12):
Thanks congratulations, So thank you so much.

Speaker 5 (04:16):
Hey Nick Alex Zeler with the Charlotte Observer here, So
I was looking at your bio and it said that
you played basketball in high school. What what did you
play and what was that experience?

Speaker 3 (04:30):
Like?

Speaker 2 (04:31):
Uh So, on defense, I played like I was ding
there with the point guard, like I played the top of.

Speaker 3 (04:36):
All the presses. You know, I would run the court.

Speaker 2 (04:38):
But on offense, you know, I kind of I was
like I was I guess I was a center with
this guy named Rodney was really good.

Speaker 3 (04:44):
He's playing D one basketball.

Speaker 2 (04:46):
I think he went to Toledo, Yes, sir, he went
to Toledo, and man, he was just ridiculous. So he
was like our big man. But I'm you know, I
was the big man on you know, how to kind
of just set springs and got rebounds. So you know,
I think I think it helped me a lot.

Speaker 5 (04:59):
Actually, well, yeah, tell me how it's helped you.

Speaker 2 (05:05):
Just like my footwork, you don't be in there with
a change direction, you know, being athletic enough to you know,
move my feed and and then not being uncomfortable, you know,
being able to jump and you know, you know, doing
things contested with somebody in front of you, and just
you know conditioning. Obviously, basketball condition is a whole lot
different than football.

Speaker 5 (05:26):
And forgive me for the multiple player comps thing, but
how many like I can't really think of many the
guys off the top of my head who were the
biggest guy on the court but also played he also
guarded the point guard. Is there like a Is there
like a basketball comp that you have for yourself?

Speaker 2 (05:48):
I would say, like, honestly like a baby Draymond Green,
except except except my my post scoring game is much better,
much much better than and I'll get make drugs.

Speaker 3 (05:59):
Yeah, ten left hand hugs. I can go up and
down here. You know I was. I was pretty decent. Awesome.
I'll be sure to let him know.

Speaker 8 (06:07):
Thanks man, sir, Hey Nick, congratulations.

Speaker 3 (06:16):
Yes, ma'am, thank you.

Speaker 8 (06:18):
I'm assuming that Rodney summer in Toledo telling people I
used to play basketball with this guy Nick, and now
he's in the NFL.

Speaker 3 (06:26):
Yes, ma'am.

Speaker 2 (06:27):
I actually text him the other day, and you know,
because he just committed to he doing it was wishing
and congratuating, wishing be congratulated draft.

Speaker 8 (06:33):
That's awesome. I know that Brian is right there near
College Station. So this was a chance to come home
for you for this past year. But what all kind
of went into that decision to come back to Texas
A and M. And how do you feel like this
past year paid off as it got you ready for
the NFL?

Speaker 2 (06:51):
Man, The decision to come back home was such a
you know, it was kind of like a relief when
I got the opportunity. You know, at first, I was
a little bit sought about it, you know, like not
being recruited out of high school.

Speaker 3 (07:02):
Man.

Speaker 2 (07:02):
But you know, once I got past that, and you know,
I sat down with coach Elko and his staff and
I was just like, man, man, this is where I
want to play.

Speaker 3 (07:09):
I mean, it's it's all onlining and.

Speaker 2 (07:10):
I think it pays off and I make some great connections,
play some great football. You know, played in the SEC.
Was able to you know, go and you know, win
a couple of big games. You know, lost a couple
of big games. You know, just to be like like,
able to you know, go to SEC man and have
success was just like you know, uh, you know it was.

Speaker 3 (07:28):
It was a big hunter and especially dude, my hometown.

Speaker 8 (07:33):
So you were salty about not getting recruited by Texas
A and M coming out of high school.

Speaker 3 (07:39):
Yes, ma'am.

Speaker 8 (07:40):
What do you think changed between then and when you
were able to go back? And you know they did
want you to be there.

Speaker 2 (07:46):
This last year honestly, just you know, like recruit like ranking,
Like you know, coming out of high school, I didn't
have many offers and then I hit the portal.

Speaker 3 (07:54):
You know, I was kind of sought out there. I
was kind of sat after so that was kind of
you know, dope.

Speaker 2 (08:00):
But yeah, I think that's all it was, you know,
just an opportunity, you know what maybe they thought I
wouldn't get enough in high school.

Speaker 8 (08:07):
Well, congratulations, thank you, yes man, thanks you.

Speaker 3 (08:12):
And neck.

Speaker 9 (08:13):
Mike Solarte with Spectrum News One, congratulations on making your
way into the league. You go to a defense that
needs help. The fan base was clamoring for a defensive
pick in the first round. Instead they go to the
second round and get you. You're the first defensive guy
taken by this team. What do you bring to the
table with what you see for Carolina and how quickly

(08:36):
do you think you can assimilate to fit in?

Speaker 3 (08:40):
Yeah?

Speaker 2 (08:41):
I mean what I see is man, you know, bringing
in you know, a nasty demeanor, you know, a godless
cheap on the shoulder, and a natural born leader, you know,
and a guy who loves football. I'm coming to you know,
compete for a spot man, and you know, compete to
win a championship.

Speaker 3 (08:58):
You know, I'm not coming too. You know, just say
I made to the NFL.

Speaker 2 (09:03):
But you know, I think I had a lot to
the defense, just about you know, being myself and you
know coming in and working hard and you know, getting
around the bets and you know, just getting better.

Speaker 9 (09:12):
What would you attribute as to your your biggest strength?
Is it your strength, physical strength, quickness, tenacity, what what
is your what's your calling card?

Speaker 2 (09:24):
I think I think just my competitiveness, man, Man, I
really don't like to lose. I think it's like almost
like I think it's the worst thing in the world.
Like I hate to lose. And I think that that's
just kind of what you know draws me to, you know,
get better. I think, you know, having a guy like
that is very important on every team. You know, hopefully
all you guys are like that, but I think that's

(09:46):
what I bring, man, Just just just your aggression and
passion of to play the game.

Speaker 3 (09:51):
Terrific.

Speaker 9 (09:52):
Thanks very much.

Speaker 6 (09:54):
All right, thank you. We will finish off with Joe
Person and Mike k Congrats. Hope you're doing well. A
couple of questions, thank you, Yeah, man, A couple of
questions for you. What was your like how big did
your diet change when when you decide to get healthier,

(10:15):
like kind of give us an example of like what
you were eating and then what you started eating differently.

Speaker 2 (10:22):
Yeah, I think it's just it wasn't necessarily like a
crazy like diet change. It was more like understanding how
to eat, you know. When I first got to the A
and m D.

Speaker 3 (10:33):
The season.

Speaker 2 (10:33):
I was trying to figure out like like my routine,
and basically I was like, you know, I was breakfast,
skiping lunch and then having like a big dinner. I'll
have like some pasta and you know, car blowed up
and right right before I go to bed, and it
just wasn't right. And you know, I'm snacking throughout the day.
It just wasn't right. And then I actually got like
milk prep. My dad got mil prep from this storing

(10:55):
call station, and you know, it just gave me a
routine and a consistent diet of how to eat, you know,
like they had my breakfast and my snacks and things
like all e up for me. It was it just
took one thing, you know what, one last thing on
my plate to worry about. And you know it made
the most sense. And I should have been on it earlier,
but you know, I just I was just being here.

Speaker 6 (11:13):
And you mentioned your dad. I read I think where
he was your NI L agent. What kind of deal
did he get you with the aggies?

Speaker 3 (11:21):
That was not my n I L agent.

Speaker 6 (11:23):
I don't care.

Speaker 2 (11:23):
He was just got helping me on that process, man,
And you know, you know I just got I was
taken care of by a man, and I really appreciate it.

Speaker 6 (11:33):
Any was it any kind of cool marketing deal you
had or any local businesses that you were working with?

Speaker 3 (11:42):
M No, sir, Yeah, no, sir, not.

Speaker 6 (11:47):
Only Hey, last one just wondered, like you talked about
your competitiveness. What when you look at you know they've
got Clowney DJ want I just got Patrick Jones and
free agency. Where do you think you fit in? And
what have the Panthers told you about your your immediate role?

Speaker 3 (12:07):
Yeah, I mean we have. We haven't spoke about that.
You know, I just got drafted, man, you.

Speaker 2 (12:12):
Know, uh, but I think, uh, you know, just going
in there and competing. I mean, you know, it was
football at the end of the day. You know, the
best man plays. You know, those are some great guys.

Speaker 3 (12:24):
Man.

Speaker 2 (12:24):
I'm excited to get around them, you know, hopefully you
know them take me in and you know, coaching me
up and you know, help me get better. But at
the day, man, I'm here to you know, play early
and you know wherever that falls in, that's on special teams,
all four phases or if that's you know, starting on defense,
that's where I'm I'm I'm for wherever I'm coming in
here and compete.

Speaker 3 (12:46):
Thank you, ingrat, I'm back. I'm back again.

Speaker 4 (12:53):
You brought up Brandon Graham, which is kind of an
unusual like top guy to kind of I mean, you know,
probably a lot about his career, but do you see
yourself being used the way he was kind of inside
outside up, you know, two point stand three point stands.
Do you feel like you can beat that type of versatile.

Speaker 3 (13:12):
Chip, Yes, sir, for sure.

Speaker 2 (13:14):
I think I think that that's that's kind of you
know something that that that's that's abstractable about me. Like
you know I have you know, gotten a four eye
and you know played a four I or I have
been in the nine technique, I have dropped in coverage.
You know I can do all of that. So you know,
sliding the side on third down or you know, sliding
the three tech now I can do that and I
love to do that, or you know being a non
technique and you know a restaurant.

Speaker 3 (13:35):
I love that as well.

Speaker 2 (13:35):
I think the versatility is really a thing that you know,
it's kind of you know said about me.

Speaker 3 (13:42):
Thanks sir, Thank.

Speaker 6 (13:44):
You, thank you so much.

Speaker 3 (13:46):
Nick.

Speaker 6 (13:46):
Appreciate you taking the time we look forward to seeing
you here in Carolina.

Speaker 3 (13:49):
