Speaker 1 (00:00):
The fan's Right for exes and oh with Vikings head
coach Mike Zimmer. All to the Minnesota Vikings Radio Network
now from the TCO studios at Egan. Here is the
voice of the Viking, Paul Ellen. Hey, it's Paul Allen,
and welcome to XS and OS on the KFA and

(00:23):
Minnesota Vikings or radio network. This radio show is provided
by US Bank and we are joined now by not
only Minnesota Vikings head coach, but one of the great
defensive minds in the history of the National Football League.
He is Mike Zimmer Coach, Paul Allen. Congratulations on the Jags.
When what's going on? Thank you? Paul rod trying to

(00:44):
get ready for Tampa Bay. Not Tom Brady. I mean,
he hasn't done it at a very high level, and
we'll get to him momentarily. But you know, these last
three all have come down to the wire. How stressful
is that as a head coach on the sideline, Well,
it's very stressful. Um. Unfortunately, they have me wired this

(01:05):
last week. So when you get a chance to watch,
you you'll see, Yeah, I want to watch the part
that they don't make public. That that's the that's the
good stuff right right, that's the good stuff. Um, I
sense you are feeling pretty good about your rookie corners
Gladden and Danceler and their progress, if accurate. What's leading

(01:26):
to that, Mic, Well, they just continue get better. I
think they're understanding verse. They're ununderstanding splits and formation earlier
in the years. So uh yeah, they're they're starting to
play a lot better, which helps. Is um. Dalvin Cook's
pass protection at or approaching and elite level. I mean
in that Jags game, it seemed to be unbelievably good. Yeah,

(01:49):
Devin's Devin's really great at everything. You know. He's he's
good with the ball in his hands, and he's good
without the ball in his hands. He's good in protections,
knowing where to go. Hum. You know, and obviously you
know all these teams are trying to trick the back
some how they in protection and he's sharp with it
and um, and he's a tough guy. I mean he

(02:11):
Dalvin Cook is a Mike Zimmer type of running back
and player. Right, He's just tough. He's tough, he's physical,
he's um off that Jags game. Is Dan Bailey going
to be okay? Any any concerns moving forward. You know,
I don't think so, Paul. You know, he's had a
great year. You know, obviously that wasn't the best game
for him the other day, but I anticipated him coming

(02:34):
back and kicking the ball well, and um, you know,
we have nice weather to kick in this week, so
it should be good. You know. The crazy thing about
Dan Man is and I'm sure you know this, but
twenty fifteen, Mike, they they moved the extra point back
to the fifteen and he hit ninety four in a
row until like the end of twenty seventeen Man, So
it's uh yeah, I would definitely look at that as

(02:56):
an aberration. One of the great most consistent kickers in
the National Football League over many years, Dan Bailey now
defensively with Eric Wilson, rookie Troy Die and veteran Todd Davis.
Mike When when Kendricks had to scratch very very very late,
what's the process of getting Davis and or Die and

(03:18):
Wilson moving inside the new plan and like making sure
it works well. Well, it was. It was hectic to
say the least. You know, Uh, Troy was playing Mike um,
and then we had to put h Eric was playing
sam and and uh Todd was playing uh the will
and so the completely three different positions for him, um

(03:41):
than they were used to. And then when they went
to nickel Um Eric Wilson was playing the mic and
and Todd was playing the dime. So it was it
was a lot of catching up. But luckily we've got
guys that uh that cross train and it's been a
while since they've been in those spots. But they did
well this um. In my opinion, this this might be

(04:02):
Riley Reef's best season in his National Football League career. Seriously, man,
I mean, what what do you really appreciate about Riley?
It's toughness. You know, he's a He's a tough guy.
Doesn't stay a lot when he does uh, he means it.
He comes out to practice every day, prepares, he he
loves to compete. Um. You know, he's just a guy

(04:24):
that's going to give you everything he's got every single Sunday.
And he doesn't talk to the media. Does that make
you envious? Very? I don't think he's ever heard livetime
for two more. I mean that you know that that
that's going to hurt your sleep this evening. That that's
possible Mike Zimmer Xes and O's courtesy of the US Bank.
The Buccaneers this weekend, Tom Brady with these Bucks. What's

(04:45):
Brady looked like with the Bucks and the Arian's offense. Well,
you know, there's a lot of similarities. Uh, quite honestly,
Paul Um. You know, he's still great with the play actions,
he's still got a terrific arm. They throw the ball vertically.
A little bit more maybe, you know, they're a little
bit more opened up formations maybe than he was in
New England. But there's a awful lot of similarities. Yards

(05:07):
per attempt six point nine. Is most of his stuff short?
Reliant on yards after catch? Well not necessarily. You know,
they do a lot of things where they've got five
wide receivers in the game at one time, and you
know those typically are shorter routes. But you know there's
there's a whole lot of times that you know, he's
trying to get the ball down the field, the play actions,

(05:30):
the over routes to Gronkowski, Um, you know, think things
of that nature and so um. You know, I think
it's just part of the combination of all the things
that they've been doing. Receivers Mike Evans and Chris Godwin.
How did they play and what makes them difficult? Well?
Evans is a big, strong, physical guy with great speed,

(05:51):
catches the ball really well. Godwins is a guy that
is he's tough, He does a lot of the dirty work.
He'll sit in there and and you know very Larry
Fitzgerald esk um the way he plays, Um, that's great speed,
catch us the ball. Well, um, yeah, they've gotten really
I mean tremendous players at every every position on their

(06:12):
whole football team. Really why why is there or what
has led Mike to their run defense being number one
in the NFL seventy four yards per game. Well, he
get some big guys up front, you know, Um, and
they come off the ball. You know, Barrett is a
guy that's gonna attack the line's scrimmage, Sue, He's gonna

(06:34):
go and attack the line of scrimmage. Um, but they've
they're gonna have ten eleven guys up there all the time.
They're very they're very very aggressive in the blitz they're
blitzes and zero blitzes. The looks that they give you, um,
they're gonna give you a lot of different looks and
they have a rookie at safety, Antoine Winfield, junior former Gopher.
Is he playing a big or a fair part in

(06:55):
that rush defense too? Yeah? You know, he doesn't really
nice job. He's he's quick to diagnose, uh, fast to
accelerate out of the deep end of the field. But
when he gets down in the box, he's very good.
Um flies around and makes plays and tackles. Tyler Johnson,
one of the greats in the history of Gophers football.
Only ten catches so far this year. What have you

(07:17):
seen in him? Yeah? Well, you know, they've got so
many receivers they're using a little sparingly. Um. You know,
they've added Antonio Brown now, so they're trying to get
him in the mix that they're playing with a lot
of tight ends and so uh, you know, and then
with god Godwin and Evans, you know, there's there's you know,
not as make reps for some of these other receivers.

(07:40):
Time for two more now, mister Zimmer Buccaneers defensive coordinator
Todd Bowles, UH coach DBS. When you were defensive coordinator
for the Cowboys, what what do you remember about Todd? Well,
Todd's number one. He's a great person, very very smart,
very articulate, does a great job with the players. Um,
you know, as you can tell from their defense. And

(08:01):
now he's a very aggressive guy. Um. You know, was
a good football International Football League and he's a terrific coach. Well,
what lastly with Harrison Smith, what if anything has changed
with his game this season, especially given your corners are
so young. Well, you know, we've he's had to be

(08:23):
a little bit more varied and everything that that we're
doing just because of the fact of you know, having
to change things with some of the corners and and that.
But you know, he's starting to get it back in
the mix again as far as you know, we've got
the corners by themselves a little bit more so he
can get down by the line of scrimmage. But he's
a tough, competitive guy. Um, loves to get involved with everything.

(08:45):
You know, He's had a lot of big hits over
the middle and big plays. You know, the thirty one
he knocked down the other day was a big play.
The end obviously the interception was a big play for us. UM.
So you know he's still the same guy that way. Good,
good tackler, good blitzer. M really a good hour aground player. Hey, coach,
good luck against the Buccaneers. Hopefully you win three in Rome.
We'll talk soon. Okay, okaya, thank you Mike zimmer head

(09:08):
coach of the Minnesota Vikings, and I am Paul Allen.
We have if audio Dnibo defensive linemen for the Vikings
coming up around the corner. But Innovative Office Solutions and
the Vikings have teamed to spotlight organizations doing good in
the community. Congratulations to Project Success for receiving the in
the Community Award. Projects Success connects students to their purpose

(09:33):
by motivating and inspiring thousands of Minneapolis six to twelfth
grade students, inspiring them to dream and plan for their futures.
On behalf of Innovative Office Solutions and the Vikings, we
thank you if a Audio dnibo next xes and os
on the KFA N Minnesota Vikings or radio network driven

(09:57):
by Polar Radio LAPP ten scans about a yard deep
in the end zone west side of US Bench Stadium.
There's a safety. Yes, it's a safety for the Minnesota
Vikings and they have taken the lead twenty one sixteen.
I believe it's a foty oh Gannibo XS and os

(10:22):
continues on the kfa N Minnesota Vikings Radio Network. Welcome back,
very happy to chat with if Fodio Denibo, a third
year defensive end slash defensive linemen from Northwestern for the
Minnesota Vikings and he joins us now for X's Nose. Ifody,
congratulations on the last couple of victories. You you had

(10:44):
a sack of Mike Glennon in the victory over the Jags,
the forty third in the history of Vikings football. Now
Mike Glennon six seven, But he's lanky, is it was?
He like hard to bring down? Yeah, remind me of
Nick Foles. Like those guys. There are trees, man, so
like so um, there's there's many ways to cut a

(11:05):
tree down. So so for me, when you're tall, when
you're sacking those big talk quarterbacks, you kind of have
to like you kind of have to like kind of
spin them around and throw into the ground like there's
no there's no nice way of sacking the quarterback. You know,
the and the celebration after the after the the safety.
Markedly different than your touchdown at the College Stadium last

(11:27):
year against the Chargers, where you you executed that eighteen
inch vertical I mean that forty two inch vertical trying
trying to get into the stands. Here you get the
safety of potty and you look like nobody was there. Yeah,
so um yeah, so yeah. Unfortunately don't have fans this year.
I was I wanted to show everyone that I can improve.
I've improved on on my vertical, but but it's probably

(11:50):
a good thing of the fans are there. So I
just got to pull the sword out and I didn't
have to worry about the crab. I to grief I
got from all my teammates from trying to drug jump
into the crowd from last year. Hey, I'm through twelve
six and six bucks this weekend. We'll get into Brady
in a little bit. But personally, how do you feel
your seasons going? Initially? I think initially as a team,

(12:11):
we start off slow from a defensive standpoint, and I
think for me getting used to the act made last
year is a rotational guy. Now I'm the guy who's
playing sixty sixty fifty snaps. So I think I started
off slow. But I think I think each week you're
trying to find a new routine there, fighting what what

(12:31):
fits you well, and I think that Jags game. I
found a news routine. I've kind of a switch things up,
and yeah, I like that routine that I had going on,
and that's going I'm gonna be playing that from now
moving forward. Yeah you didn't. I'm really glad you said that.
It's very self aware and you didn't have a sack
for like a month month and change. But is it
fair to say a body in the Carolina game that

(12:53):
you kind of jumped up in that game with whatever
you're talking about, like doing some new things, and you
may not have had a sack, but don't you sense
things are getting better? Yeah? I dude. So So it's
just it's just like experience. At the end of the day,
like uh, Like I remember people are telling me, hey,
if i'd get ready to be a starter this year, um,
and I'm like, yeah, I'm ready, I'm ready. I'm ready.

(13:14):
But just um, just from a standpoint, it's a different
type of game because last year I would go win,
I'll juice stop, you know what I mean, played twenty
twenty five snaps like ah, I'm to get out. But
now each week, you know, each pony you're going against,
the tack, you're going against Houston there's tendencies that I
do that I don't even know about that that they
are picking up on end. It's it's a game of chess.

(13:37):
You have to constantly revolve, revolve, get back to the
drawing boards. Me with Coach Dre, Coach Patterson, me with
the march, You say, hey, what could I improve on?
So so I think that's I think last game was up,
and I mean I'm getting closer closer, and I I
feel pretty confident now if I Doodenabo defensive lineman for
the Vikings, is our guest on XS and OS and

(13:57):
it's game day any day played the new Vikings scratch
game from the Minnesota Lottery top prize hundred thousand dollars.
Details at mn Lottery dot com. How much has how
much has it impacted your season not having Denil Hunter? Yeah?
So unfortunately not having to deal Hunters it was a
big deal just from a standpoint, you know, I mean
he's a game changer. Obviously, he's like he's a leader

(14:20):
where he's our most experienced defensive lineman. So him gone
early kind of forced all of us to grow up,
to be honest, It's not more like hey, hey, yeah,
I don't. I don't need to have a good game
or I don't need to do my part because we
have Denila seeing us. But now it's it's forced all
of us to grow up. And I think it's good
at the end of the day. So next year one,
what do we do. Eventually getting back will be pretty

(14:42):
be pretty special. But I think for all of us,
it's force has to grow in and I think from that,
like we're getting better from this. If Foddy, you touched
on it earlier, you already have played a career high
and snaps it's close to six hundred. Does your body
feel it? And is there a physical transition? Yeah? So yeah,
because like I think the first thing for me was

(15:04):
I didn't start. I didn't start in college. Like I
think I started two career games in college. So I said,
going to the NFL and starting your whole season. So initially,
like I remember the first couple of games, I was like, whoa, oh, yeah,
this feels like a car crash. Yeah, I've never been
I've never not I've never had to them before. So

(15:24):
then as as a veteran, the more experience you go,
do you start talking to older guys, start talking around
like Hey, dude, what's your flot, what's your routine? Like,
what do you do throughout the week to get your
body right. So as the week's been progressing, I've been
finding new routines, more things. Then I'm feeling a lot
more fresh than I feel. I feel really energized now
when um if end or when you get over there

(15:45):
to that defensive tackle spot. In the business, they call
it three technique what advantages do you have been in there? So,
so from a three D tech standpoint, as a standpoint
going get to tackle versus a guard, that's kind of
the matchup. Usually to your guards, topcs are using your laptop,
is your best athlete on the team on the offensive line,
and usually your guards are not as athletic. But there's

(16:06):
quote unboote smarter. So a lot of times as a dad,
you're so used to going into all these athletic tackles,
so then when you go to a guard, everything happens
a little faster because the balls closer. But you just
know that you can outwork a guard because they just
like the athleticism. So from that standpoint, going in and
when I was rushing chapter attack, there's just a mismatches, right, there, so,

(16:31):
so that's always an advantage, but it's less it's less room,
so it's kind of you're kind of it's kind of
getting a street fight in a telephone booth. So like,
oh yeah, so you and this one person, you have
one shot at a telephone booth. Why have I pop you? Doctor?
Have I miss? I'm gonna miss pretty bad. So yeah,
but I mean you got to recognize a lot of
the newbies listening right now are like, hey, what's a

(16:52):
telephone booth? And b if I was inside of that
telephone booth with a Budiodna boat, if I don't pick
up the actual phone and just start flay away, I
got no shine. Yeah, yeah, good call, because because gen
Z's different gen Zenz, probably you don't know where the
phone move is. Couple of about that, A couple of

(17:13):
quickies with the Fadio Denibo. Now you have that nice
safety and subsequently a sack on Mike Glennon and the
Jags game. We got the bucks this weekend. Last one.
For the inside of football fans, hear me and others
if Addie reference the word contain frequently with defensive ends.
So what does that mean for those who don't know

(17:34):
and why is it so important? So so when when
people reference the word contained, they're usually referring to the
defensive end to addressure and a lot of a lot,
a lot you'll hear that. You'll hear that talks a
lot when you're doing get sad dual through at quarterback.
So your quarterbacks like, um, you're Russell Wilson's um just
Shaun Watson, who else Aaron Rodgers, Rogers, Aaron Rodgers. So

(18:00):
from from a standpoint of the D lineman, you know,
when you're going against um, let's say, like a Philip Rivers,
you know he's not the most mot quarterback. So as
a defensive end, you can shoot your shot like like
you're trying to work in your speed rush. But if
the B gap tends to be hope you can do
a little quick inside move and you can capitalize it
and hopefully you get sacked because they'd be masks. You're

(18:21):
not really worried about him blowing. You're not worried about
blowing contain because blowing contain is that the quarterback gets
out of the tackle box to runch for I thin
ten fifteen yardments. So so that's kind of so for
D m you have to pick your shots, and you
have to know who, um who the quarterback you're you're facing.

(18:42):
Some weeks it is more important to focus on keep
contained a while other wads you're like, let's get going,
let's get to the quarterback. I'm not expecting you to
share the game plan, you know, against Brady and the
Bucks obviously, but for you, what are some keys getting
to Brady? And I mean, given you are a quality
three technique, when you get the opportunity and your legs

(19:04):
are fresh, I mean that that's been the book on
Tom all of his career. The middle pressure just messes
with him, you know, Yeah, just just want a standpoint,
you know, like all these great quarterbacks, ok, Aaron Rodgers,
the Tom Brady's, the Drew Brees. Like every quarterback looks
looks great until you get popped in the face, right,
Like you know what I mean, Like you think, you

(19:24):
think you're ready for a street fight until you get
popped in the face. So from from a football standpoint,
just getting them off their launch point, you know what
I mean, Like they're in practice or not used to
getting hit all the time that they're on the private balls,
they're throwing perfect spirals to their wide receivers. But then
when you get to a game and you're getting pressure,
and you're getting pressure in the middle, you have to
move out of your launch point and you're kind of uncomfortable.

(19:46):
And the key thing is you want all these quarterbacks
to be uncomfortable not getting the gain the groove. If
Poddy fantastic work as usual, Really really happy when things
go well for you and for the team that Thank
you very much for the time. Best to luck this weekend.
