Speaker 1 (00:00):
What has that been like for you? Just to see
the way Big Blue Nation has embraced you all and
really what this fan base is.
Speaker 2 (00:07):
I mean, it's it's the most special thing out there.
Speaker 3 (00:10):
Right.
Speaker 2 (00:11):
You go to NBA gym's they don't do that like that.
Speaker 3 (00:14):
And just like before every game, you know, while we're
doing the starting lineups and things like that, I just
look in the stands and I'm just like, man, how
sweet is this. It doesn't get any better than this
anywhere in the world or any basketball venue doesn't get
better than what BBN is at the end of the day.
So it's it's incredibly special.
Speaker 1 (00:34):
And I mean Jackson this year too, with Kerr getting injured,
having to take over the point guard point guard role
at some point, he's really kind of been in different
areas for you guys as you've needed him.
Speaker 3 (00:44):
Yeah, he's been an everyday guy and the team looks
to him, right. He kind of knows what Coach Pope
is thinking a lot, which is awesome. And yeah, we're
very fortunate he's here at Kentucky and man, he's he's
the one that's so excited just to have Kentucky Cross's chest.
I mean, that's that's the part that's like he knows
how special this place is and he wants to be
(01:07):
perfect every game.
Speaker 2 (01:08):
So that that was that's a huge way.
Speaker 3 (01:09):
Sure, And uh yeah, he's been able to block all
that stuff out and just be like, let's let's stay
in the moment and well and win these games.
Speaker 1 (01:17):
He mentioned he's the translator because when and I'm sure
you could be too, right because you've been with coach
Vote for so long. You guys are kind of the
I guess the pope iss right, you can you can
translate that, especially when you all first got.
Speaker 2 (01:29):
Here for sure. Yeah.
Speaker 3 (01:30):
No, I mean everyone's like, all right, what does he
mean by that? And uh yeah, Jackson has done an
incredible job and the we got, man, it's just such
a fun group of players we got and uh yeah,
a lot of a lot of great leadership on this team.
Speaker 1 (01:58):
Welcome into the Behind Kentucky Basketball Podcast. I'm your host
Michelle Kenzeweck and this week joined with Kentucky men's basketball
assistant coach Cody Peeger. Cody, thanks for happening on the
podcast today.
Speaker 2 (02:08):
Yeah, no, I'm excited to be here.
Speaker 1 (02:11):
So I was thinking of introducing you as Packers enthusiast.
And I'm not sure if you know, but I am
a Bears fan hosting this podcast with you. I did
not tell you before I put the put the mic
in front of you.
Speaker 2 (02:23):
Well, all right, we can still be friends, but football Sundays.
Speaker 1 (02:28):
We can be for Sundays sound good? Well, Cody, I
know we talked when you when you first got to Lexington,
and so much has transpired over over these last couple
of months. And you know, being with coach Pope for
as long as you have been with him, I thought
something was really interesting. Somebody told me that, you know,
you were there with him when he had his first
(02:48):
win as a Division one head coach and his two
hundredth win as a Division one head coach in the
college basketball world, when things are moving and shaking and
people are all over the place. Two have really have
really been kind of a duo for a long time now.
Speaker 3 (03:03):
Yeah, it's pretty fun. You know, we started at by
U when he was an assistant. I was the director
of bass operations, and you know, we just we we.
Speaker 2 (03:12):
Hit it off.
Speaker 3 (03:13):
We got along, We thought about the you know things
the same way, all about development with our players, and
we spent a lot of time together and just built
a great relationship. And then when he first got that
job at Utah Valley, both of us, you know, we're
working in a room similar to this because we weren't
even allowed in the coaches offices yet. Long story short,
(03:37):
but we were in a little locker room like this,
and you know, our first you know, workout, we had
like six players, all of them were out of shape,
and had twelve different basketballs to use. So it's been
a little bit different coming to Kentucky here.
Speaker 1 (03:56):
When you think back to that time of you know,
you guys in the trenches really working your way up
in the in the coaching world. And you know, however,
many years later, twenty twenty four, right now, you know,
you're you're smiling right now, like you really have been
through this journey together, which is rare sometimes in college
basketball with the way you know, coaches change and jump
(04:19):
from place to place. But you two have gotten to
really experience Utah Valley and BYU and now here at Kentucky.
Speaker 2 (04:26):
Oh for sure.
Speaker 3 (04:26):
Yeah, it's it's absolutely absolutely crazy. You know, at one
point in my career we moved five times in four years.
But luckily I've been in the same same place with
the same guy for a long time, and then you know,
for those one of the ten twelve years or whatever.
And then then we came here to Kentucky and that
was obviously a big change. But but it's been pretty special.
(04:50):
I just remember our first three weeks at Utah Valley.
Speaker 2 (04:52):
It was just no sleep. I just had a newborn.
Speaker 3 (04:57):
And you know, at one point where Coach Pope and
I are talking about different players and this and that,
and my son was born like two days before that,
and we're talking about forty different players and he's just like,
all right, hey, how's Andrew doing. And I'm thinking, and
that's my son's name. And when he said it, I
(05:18):
was like, what player is he talking about right now?
And this this was just one of those times where
I was just.
Speaker 2 (05:23):
Like, oh my gosh, he's talking about my two.
Speaker 3 (05:25):
Day old time del of just where I was at
that time, and you know, it's just it's kind of special.
Speaker 2 (05:33):
You know.
Speaker 3 (05:33):
We we had so many, so many crazy times there
at Utah Valley first getting started. You know, you know,
one time, you know, we had to have the Didas
order in and you know, we're signing players, transcripts, all
the stuff, recruits on campus and one time we did
(05:53):
our Adidas order at like two am in the morning,
just something absolutely ridiculous. And luckily at Kentucky it's been
a little bit different than that.
Speaker 1 (06:01):
Right, suns down doesn't matter, you're up right. I'm sure
you have gotten packing down and moving. You're good at that.
When you when you came here, you were like, we
got this, we know how to do this.
Speaker 2 (06:11):
There's there's nothing more that I disliked than moving.
Speaker 1 (06:15):
I can sec at that. You can sec at that,
but you got it done. Check and you're in Lexington,
So I think I think it's kind of interesting, you
know when when coach has talked about you know, his
staff and all the different roles that you guys have,
and you're specifically like the offensive coordinator, right, and then
you know Coach Brooks the defensive coordinator. So in your role,
(06:38):
Cody and I know we talked about how you've been
with Coach Pope for a long time, but you know,
over those years, what was it like maybe trying to
figure out the identity that you really wanted your offense
to have, or maybe how it's evolved when you and
coach started to to what it is now here at Kentucky.
Speaker 2 (06:59):
Yeah, man, and wow, it's it's really changed.
Speaker 3 (07:03):
You know, our first year at excuse me, Utah Valley
was just a lot of dribble handoff ball screen. We
kind of ran what Villanova ran in the in the
early two thousand and seven, two thousand and eight. So
we started a lot of film and.
Speaker 2 (07:16):
Just gamed a game.
Speaker 3 (07:17):
We learned so much of what we wanted to do
and and and change it just by how teams regarding us.
And then throughout the years, you know, we've gotten a
guard that could really post, so we throw them in
the post a ton. You know, just kind of evolved
with with what our players were able to do at
that time. You know, a kid named Ali Khalifa, you
(07:38):
know we had at Buyu last year. He you know,
he gave us a whole new you know, you know,
a whole new you know, basically tree of things that
we could do offensively with with what he could do
with making passes, making easy reads that we're able to
bring here to Kentucky. And now we've just evolved in
(07:59):
that at like we don't even run a lot of
stuff we did at BYU. Know, it's a little bit
different here. At Kentucky, so just every year, just what
our players are allowed to do. And you know, we
were just like, hey, run this, let's run as fast
as we can. See what it looks like, see what happens.
And we picked stuff up during practice and we're able
to just add that into our game plan for that day.
Speaker 1 (08:20):
Is there a coach maybe that you've always looked up to,
whether it be at the college level or NBA level
or just offensive genius right that that you've kind of
looked at their stuff and tried to emulate or work
off of and maybe be creative to create your own.
Speaker 2 (08:37):
Yeah.
Speaker 3 (08:37):
So, I mean I was really lucky to work for
some very good coaches before before I got my opportunity.
One was Stull Morill at Utah State, who's known as
a really good offensive mind. He taught me so much
of scoring in the half court, just with pace. And
then you know Coach Rose, he was so just confidence
(08:59):
and and let his guys play fast and free.
Speaker 2 (09:03):
So we took a lot of both of that.
Speaker 3 (09:05):
And then coach mc jariss is the exact opposite. But yeah,
I would say Coach Rose, Coach Moral, and coach Carry Rupp.
He was a he was he was like, could make
anything evolve into whatever, and so I just learned a
ton from him. And and now it's just I mean,
(09:27):
every single plays on YouTube. A team that's you know
in Africa that has one camera, like they might have
a play that you might see. I mean, it's just
so much now it's just just online that you're able
to watch and see and and we we we we
study who are the most efficient teams in the country
and in the NBA, and we spend a lot of
(09:47):
time with that. So every year it's a little bit different.
You know, you watch the NBA and you're like, oh,
John Morant does that, Well, it's also Ja Morant, So
we got to change up things. But I would say
Coach Rose, Coach Moral, spend a lot of time with
those guys, and then just Coach Prope and I just
bounce the ideas off each other. And now sometimes we
say the most ridiculous things and we're like, we try
(10:08):
it and practice, it doesn't.
Speaker 1 (10:09):
Work, but spaghetti at a wall, yeah, if it sticks exactly.
Speaker 2 (10:14):
Gouts just spend a lot of time on it and
care about it.
Speaker 3 (10:16):
And the thing is, we have great players that want
to play for each other, so that's the best part.
Speaker 1 (10:22):
Well, and you kind of mentioned how getting a specific
player can maybe change what the offense looks like or
can make it, you know, not one dimensional, maybe two dimensional,
three dimensional. Has there been maybe a specific player or
a couple of players who you know, you sign them,
you know what they had done at their past schools, right,
but then you have been able to over you know,
(10:42):
the last couple of months, just see them in game
action and maybe they're able to give you something different
or their game has maybe taken a change in a
good way, but like an addition or anything like that. Yeah,
for a team right now?
Speaker 3 (10:55):
Yeah, yeah, I mean Kobe Brea obviously we knew he
was an elite shooter, but what he can do off
the ball, just like you know, two guys are coming
to him, so it gives us easy layups at time.
Andrew Carr just brings so much attention because he can
shoot the three, you can score on the block. Really
because as you know, we got what ten guys average
(11:17):
or no, sorry, we have six guys, five guys averaging
ten plus, like we're right.
Speaker 1 (11:22):
A different guy every night.
Speaker 3 (11:23):
Too, guy every night, So we're able to kind of
change things throughout the game and adjust, and.
Speaker 2 (11:28):
Yeah, it's just been man.
Speaker 3 (11:30):
We have so many guys that just want to play
the right way and make the right play. And you know,
Jackson Robinson might have a great first half and then
Kobe a great second half or Lamont Butler Otega away.
I mean, it's just a lot of fun with the
team we have.
Speaker 1 (11:44):
So I know, as a coach, when you're on the bench,
you gotta be you gotta be locked into the game.
But when you see Kobe Braya hit his seventh three
pointer in Reperina, Uh, what is that like from your
point of view? Kobe?
Speaker 2 (11:56):
I mean, I get hyped. I get excited.
Speaker 3 (12:00):
When I first started this a long time ago, coach
Majerius like he never moved during games. Now during timeouts,
he was just a mad man. But I watched him
a lot. Is that he wouldn't react to anything. He
would just watch and study the game.
Speaker 2 (12:16):
And that's what I try to do.
Speaker 3 (12:17):
I try to show least amount of emotion emotion as possible. Now,
obviously sometimes it happens, but it's absolutely unbelievable. I want
to jump out of my seat, But at the end
of day, I just want to sit there and watch
the game and I can celebrate after.
Speaker 1 (12:32):
Yeah, there's a smile. Sometimes you can't hold back the
smile though, right when you see the arena just absolutely explode.
I know. I think when I was talking to coach McHale,
he came in here and I just asked him about
you know, you've heard about what Rupp Arena is, and
you know, people can tell you about what you can
expect during a game, but to then experience it at
(12:54):
a high level, right when Florida was in town, or
you mentioned Alabama coming up, When you experience that moment,
what has that been like for you? Just to see
the way Big Blue Nation has embraced you all and
really what this fan base is.
Speaker 2 (13:09):
I mean, it's the most special thing out there.
Speaker 3 (13:12):
Right.
Speaker 2 (13:13):
You go to NBA gym's they don't do it like that.
Speaker 3 (13:17):
And just like before every game, you know, while we're
doing the starting lineups and things like that, I just
look in the stands and I'm just like, man, how
sweet is this. It doesn't get any better than this
anywhere in the world or any basketball venue, doesn't get
better than what BBN is at the end of the day.
Speaker 2 (13:33):
So it's incredibly special. You know, before every game. I'm
just so excited and just to be a part of it.
Speaker 1 (13:43):
All Right, listen, everybody, we need to take a brief
moment to thank our podcast sponsor uk Federal Credit Union,
as the official credit union of the University of Kentucky.
UKFCU understands that students need support, and that's why they've
created the Student Rewards Accounts, which offers them five percent
cash back on all debit card purchases to students aged
thirteen to twenty five. Visit UKFCU dot org or stop
(14:06):
by one of their seven local branches to open an account.
Today bed really insured by NCUA. I think you mentioned
to me when you first moved here. I asked about
your kids and maybe what your one son would do
when he stepped foot on Raverena's floor, what a first
game would be like? How cool has that then to
(14:29):
have your family also experience this, And I think one
of your son's, right, he's at the age where he
can he can watch basketball and kind of understand it, right.
Speaker 3 (14:37):
Yeah, he's nine, And I mean, no, Dad, what do
we ranked today?
Speaker 1 (14:42):
Like?
Speaker 2 (14:43):
Every day?
Speaker 3 (14:43):
It's something like and if we lose a game, he's
the first person to like, I see him in the
morning and he just doesn't even want to look at
me because he's so pissed. It's pretty special.
Speaker 2 (14:53):
I mean.
Speaker 3 (14:55):
This last week was the he's had been home from
school because obviously we got the weather going.
Speaker 1 (15:00):
Out here right snow days.
Speaker 3 (15:02):
But he was able to come to practice, and two
or three days ago was his first time ever to
shoot and rup and I just remember him just being
so excited just to shoot around. I mean, it's very special.
My whole family is super blessed and excited to be here.
Speaker 1 (15:16):
Does he have a favorite player or a favorite part
I guess of watching the team, He probably loves everybody, right.
Speaker 3 (15:21):
Yeah, he loves everybody, and you know he walks around
thinking he's pretty cool too.
Speaker 2 (15:26):
Kobe what's up man? You know?
Speaker 3 (15:27):
And Jackson, and you know when when we're at home,
he wants to be every guy like Kobe Brea for
three or Amari Williams with the past like he he
you know, will play one on one and he'll just
change who he is every single possession.
Speaker 2 (15:43):
It's awesome, is it.
Speaker 1 (15:44):
I know in my household that was folding laundry with
the socks, you know, an assist here, a dunk over
a door.
Speaker 2 (15:50):
Oh for sure.
Speaker 3 (15:51):
Yeah, he runs into me and my wife all day long,
just bumping us, saying and one.
Speaker 2 (15:57):
That's all he does.
Speaker 3 (15:57):
He either euro steps us or just bumps in and
one and one, and that's like he's scoring it.
Speaker 1 (16:03):
That's that's incredible. That is incredible, Cody.
Speaker 2 (16:06):
My wife begs to differ on that.
Speaker 1 (16:08):
Yeah, you're like in your head it just replays all day, Cody.
You you mentioned Jackson Robinson and I know he was
at BYU with you all, and you've got to coach him.
For the last couple of years now, Coach Pope has
been pretty vocal about and I think it was after
the Florida game. He came out and was getting shots
up after that game, and he was pretty vocal about,
(16:29):
you know how how Jax kind of felt like maybe
the weight of the world, a lot of pressure, just
worrying about the future. SEC play right all eyes on
you at Kentucky and he mentioned just telling him about
like being in the moment and playing free. And really
these last couple of games, like the Mississippi State game
twenty seven points from him, the game the other night Texas,
A and M what have you seen from him? Maybe
(16:49):
in these in these last couple of days that have
showed like he's just not he's blocking the noise out
and he's just he's playing free.
Speaker 2 (16:57):
Yeah.
Speaker 3 (16:57):
That that's been the best part for him because it's
a lot for these guys. I mean, you know, they
see everything on social media and everybody says something to
them where they are. I mean, that's just a lot
for a young, young dude. And what he's done is
just been able to block it out, you know, just
spend extra extra time just worrying about teammates more, which
(17:20):
is which is hard for hard for anybody. But he's
done an incredible job just lifting in that weight off
his shoulders and just just being about just trying to
win this next play and not worry about the past,
not worry about the futures, like you said, stay in
the moment. And it's been pretty special to watch him
and grow as a leader, especially the last three years.
Speaker 2 (17:41):
The first first day.
Speaker 3 (17:42):
He walked into BYU and you're like, oh my gosh,
I don't know if this guy's gonna make it.
Speaker 1 (17:46):
Yeah, right, they're so young. They come in your door,
they're eighteen years old. And I mean Jackson this year too,
with with Kerr getting injured, having to take over the
point guard point guard role at some point. He's really
kind of been in different areas for you guys as
you've needed him.
Speaker 3 (18:00):
Yeah, he's been an everyday guy and the team looks
to him, right. He kind of knows what Coach Pope
is thinking a lot, which is awesome, and uh yeah,
we're very fortunate. Uh he's here at Kentucky and man,
he's he's the one that's so excited just to have
Kentucky cross his chest. I mean that's that's the part.
That's like he knows how special this place is and
(18:21):
he wants to be perfect every game.
Speaker 2 (18:23):
So that that was that's a huge way.
Speaker 3 (18:25):
Sure, and uh yeah he's been able to block all
that stuff out and just be like let's let's let's
stay in the moment and win these games.
Speaker 1 (18:33):
He mentioned he's the translator because when and I'm sure
you could be too, right, because you've been with Coach
Pope for so long, you guys are kind of the
I guess the Pope iss right. You can you can
translate that, especially when you all first got here.
Speaker 2 (18:45):
For sure.
Speaker 3 (18:45):
Yeah, no, I mean everyone's like, all right, what does
he mean by that and uh yeah, Jackson's done an
incredible job. And the we got, man, it's just such
a fun group of players we got and uh yeah.
Speaker 2 (18:58):
A lot of a lot of great leadership on this team.
Speaker 1 (19:01):
And as you've gotten into SEC play, right, you were
in the Big twelve, you come over to SEC play.
I mean this year, the SEC just being absolutely stacked
from top to bottom. You know, eleven twelve teams could
make the tournament this year. What has it been like,
you know, playing in those games when you look at
the league as a whole, I mean, the depth in
(19:21):
it and how every single night I mean is a
quad one win, right, Like playing all these games, whether
it be on the road, whether it be at home,
or another ranked team, like you got another ranked team
coming up here against Alabama.
Speaker 3 (19:33):
Yeah, it's special. You know, that's what you dream to
play against the best every single night. And you know
that's every scouting report you're like, all right, we've got
Mississippi State.
Speaker 2 (19:43):
They got these really good guards.
Speaker 3 (19:45):
Here's what they do. They got these really good bigs.
All right, here, you got Alabama, they got these really
good guards. They got these really good bigs. So like
every game you're like, well this guy's got a chance
to be an All League player. This guy's a pro,
this guy's this, this guy's that, and this guy's.
Speaker 2 (19:57):
An unbelievable coach.
Speaker 3 (19:58):
They do these types of things, try to muck up
the game this way, they try to do this, they
try to do that. It's it's it's the best of
the best, and that's what Kentucky is. And this SEC
Conference is the best league that's ever been I think
ever happened in the last thirty years or so. So
it's it's pretty special every single.
Speaker 1 (20:20):
Day being new to the league, right, you can be
in the league forever, right, you know, Bruce pro whether
it be he was at Tennessee and now he's at Auburn.
You get used to how coaches play, how they recruit
different things. Was there anything specific that that you all
did or your staff did when coming in and scouting
for a league play just to try to, you know,
catch up to speed or do anything specific when studying
(20:41):
the other teams.
Speaker 3 (20:42):
Yeah, so the first thing, not the first thing, I
would say after the first month or so.
Speaker 1 (20:46):
Yeah, I gotta get all the players and everything and
that whole thing.
Speaker 3 (20:50):
But every off season, like when we're in the big twelve.
And now, like you said, the SEC will break down
every team defense what they did, just say, how they guard,
ball screens, pinned downs, how they guard you know, all
the SUTs that we are, all the things that we
kind of want to do or how we can take advantage.
(21:12):
So you know, spend watch three or four games on
each team and just see what are these coaches tendencies? Right,
I mean that was a good factor for us when
we played you know, coach Jan's Atsissippi State. We already
play him at New Mexico State, and so we kind
of had a feel and then we're watching what he
was doing. You know, now he changed a couple of
(21:35):
things defensively, but we had a good feel of what
we were gonna kind of look for.
Speaker 1 (21:39):
So just kind of I mean, coaches, like we talked about,
they move around. So you had the benefit of playing
him at New Mexico State. Then when he comes to
Mississippi State. What about maybe one thing that you're looking
forward to. I know you were in the middle of
SEC play, but as there been an arena or something.
I mean, Rop obviously number one arena to play in,
but I mean seeing all of these different diferent cities, right,
(22:01):
these sec cities that you've got, you've probably never been
to Starkville or maybe you've been to Starkville before. But
any city that you're you're excited to see or all
of them.
Speaker 2 (22:10):
The truth, Yeah, like it's you don't really see much
of the city.
Speaker 1 (22:15):
Yeah, I know, you guys are probably plays with us.
Speaker 3 (22:17):
We fly in and we get in at about six seven
at night, and then we go straight to the gym.
It's dark out. You can't see anything you practice. I mean,
the only time you really see any of it is
when you're just kind of driving through going to the
gym and then back.
Speaker 2 (22:30):
To the hotel. Uh.
Speaker 3 (22:34):
I'm so happy that I get to be at Kentucky
playing against all these teams.
Speaker 2 (22:39):
And you know, I'm you know what.
Speaker 3 (22:42):
I was at Louisiana Tech. We played against Mississippi State,
so I got to Starkville. But most of these, most
of these places I have not been to. So I'm
excited for all of them. Like just every game, I'm
just I'm trying to stay in the moment as much
as possible. And the best answer I can give you
is I'm glad I'm at Kentucky.
Speaker 2 (23:04):
I want to get to all these places.
Speaker 1 (23:05):
And all the arenas. I think one of my favorite things.
Annsley posted a photo the other night and he had
the legs propped up with the newspaper The Beat Kentucky
when he had he had a big game there. That

arena the way it was packed when you all went.
Speaker 2 (23:18):
To town, it's it's special.
Speaker 3 (23:20):
That's one thing I guess I wish I had for
all these high level away games that I've been lucky
to be a part of, is like just a picture
of their fans and their students or just like a
video of how they are, just to remember that part
because it's it's pretty neat. Like before that Mississippi State game,
it'd be like you said it was, it was packed
(23:40):
and it was a sellout and there's students and their
fans are throwing popcorn at us, and it's pretty special.
Speaker 1 (23:47):
There you go, BBN take videos for Cody at the
away games to me. There you go tag them on
Twitter because you're very active on You're very active on Twitter.
Speaker 2 (23:55):
Yes, yeah, boom, there you go.
Speaker 1 (23:58):
Well, Cody, I think that's a perfect way to rounded out.
Thank you so much for hopping on here today and
you know, good luck against Alabama and for the rest
of the season. We'll see you.
Speaker 2 (24:06):
