(00:06):
Well event to behind Kentucky Basketball.I'm Curtis Birch the UK Sports Network.
I got to sit down with thenew members of the Kentucky men's basketball staff.
We've been sharing those interviews on thisfeed. Today we'll hear from the
last coach that we haven't got achance to hear from yet, Cody Feger.
If you haven't already, you cango back and listen to interviews with
associate head coach Alvin Brooks and assistantcoaches Mark Fox and Jason Hart on this
(00:30):
podcast feed. As I mentioned today, we're going to hear from Cody Figer
joined the staff in April. Hehas been a nine year member of Pope's
staffs, first serving as an assistantcoach at Utah Valley then transitioning to BYU.
Figer and Pope first worked together whenthey were both members of the BYU
staff. Pope was an assistant coachand Feger served as director of basketball operations.
(00:55):
Fear began his career as a studentassistant coach and video coordinator at Utah
under Rick Majeris. Figure talks tor Michelle Kenzevik about what it means to
him to be a member of theKentucky basketball staff and shares a little bit
about his insight into coach Mark Pope. Cody Fieger, assistant coach at Kentucky.
(01:15):
How does that sound? That soundsabsolutely amazing. It's it's unreal to
be here. You have been withCoach Pope for a very long time.
Now you guys have got to growin the coaching world together. When you
heard the rumblings kind of surrounding theFinal Four that coach Pope could be the
next coach of Kentucky, what evenpopped into your head? I thought that
(01:41):
would be unbelievable. I thought,oh, I'm sure he's got a real
chance. I knew if he gotan interview he was going to get it.
So I was like, there's alwaysa chance. And when he got
it, I was a static forhim. I mean, it's his dream
job. This is the mecha ofcollege basketball, this is where you want
to be. So as happy asyou are for your your friend and your
(02:04):
colleague, the next thought in yourhead probably is I could be a part
and I'm going to be a partof the staff, right, I mean,
what was that conversation like with yourfamily? What was that realization that
I can be coaching at Kentucky.Well, tell you the truth. It's
still not like hasn't hit me yet. Like every time I looked down,
I'm like, oh my gosh, that's a Kentucky logo or Kentucky on my
(02:28):
shirt. It's just so weird totext recruits that. And man, it's
just it's it's surreal, to tellyou the truth. But it's something I've
really enjoyed. My family's just thestatic, my mom, dad, my
brother, everybody. It's it's prettyneat. It's got a nice ring to
it, right, It's got agreat I thought it was. It was
(02:52):
funny. Coach Pope came out anddid an interview and said, you know,
a lot of the guys we weretrying to get at BYU they're calling
me. Now, what is thatthen, Like from the recruiting standpoint for
you all, Well, the crazything is, you know, yeah,
one of the best stories is whenCoach Pope got the job, a recruit
called me like five minutes later. And it's not like I was going to
(03:14):
Kentucky for sure yet or anything washappening, right, he goes, We're
going to Kentucky, And I waslike, dude, like, there's so
much that's got to happen, andhe's a heck of a player, this
and that, But it was justthat's the type of poll that Kentucky has,
and when you have the resources andjust the way that college basketball is
changing, you knew that once MarkPope wanted you on his staff, that
(03:37):
you guys had to get to work. Yeah, what was that? I
mean, first kind of forty eighthours when he's building the staff around you
guys, adding Mark Fox, JasonHarrer, Alvin Brooks. You guys are
all now getting to meet each otherin a coworker. Yeah, room right.
I'm sure you knew each other throughoutthe basketball world. What was kind
of that like when you all gotgot on your private jet. I think
somebody took a picture and BBM startedtracking you. I mean, when you
(04:00):
all just got there and said, okay, let's get to work. How
has that been like to It's beenIt's been awesome, Like really feel part
of a team, all guys justtrying to do it together. Had a
couple of zooms just trying to getto know each other here and there.
But it's it's been awesome because they'reall in it. Just for one thing
and one thing only, and that'swinning and all doing it together. It's
(04:24):
been it's been awesome so far.How hard is it to build a roster
as quickly as you all have donein the last couple of weeks? Man,
it was it was a couple ofdays. Now, that was that
was very challenging. But it's it'slike you're like, you're doing this for
Kentucky. You're you're doing this forthe mecca of college basketball. I think
(04:44):
we had like seven visits in fivedays. It was absolutely insane, but
it was. It was awesome.I wouldn't want to do it any any
other different any different way. Youknow, we had to fill I think
we had one or two guys onthe roster and it just kind of exploded
like that and now we just gota couple of spots. Phil. So,
when you are looking for a player, whether that be somebody in high
school or somebody in the transfer portal, what type of player are you all
(05:08):
looking for? You know, shootingis a separator skill high IQ looking for
a guy that can defend multiple positions, a winner, you know, guy
that wins in high school ranks andwins an AAU ranks that kids just all
about winning. That's super important tous, and that understands what's most important
(05:28):
because we're going to win here andwe're gonna do it with the guys that
want to do it the right way. Mark has shown BBN that he has
a lot of energy. I mean, the press conference was insane. I'm
sure you're watching this thinking, ohmy goodness, this is insane what he
just walked into. He really embracesit, but you can tell he's a
very high energy guy. What hasit been like working along the side for
(05:51):
over a decade now, Oh,I mean it's been It's like that every
single day. He's always got energy. He's always looking forward to the day,
right Like, he works so stinkinghard and he just wants to win.
But it's infectious, his personality, his energy, all of it.
(06:12):
It's been awesome to see him asa leader. Do you have a favorite
memory? I know you only havebeen here a short time, but just
in general of coaching with coach Popefor so long, O, man,
there's probably there's a there's a tonof memories. I remember signing one of
our first Are you talking just Kentuckyor anywhere? You could do both,
all right. So my favorite onewas we were at Utah Valley and we
(06:38):
signed you know, we signed oneof his top level recruits. And we've
been recruiting him forever, forever, forever, and we always put kids that
we got, we put their theirinitials in black. Everybody else was,
you know, the roster was inblack. And then we were finally able
to put this kid in black thathe committed, and I just remember him
(06:59):
having a tub of cookie dough andhe just bought some girls Scout cookie dough
or something like that, and he'sjust sitting in his office with a big
smile on his face, just scoopingup cookie dough and just eating like like
this was a big tub too.So that was my That was one of
my favorites of all time. Andthen here at Kentucky, man, it's
(07:19):
it's every day has just been go, go, go, and you know,
just his big smile on his face. So anytime he talks about this
place and how much he loves it, right like you can just see it
and like you said, it's infectiousand feel it. And that's probably like
the something that I'm like, allright, we're gonna win it. We're
gonna win this thing. You needto make if anybody has a video of
(07:42):
him eating the cookie, do itcould be a new gift. Yeah,
exactly, Well you have right backto coach figure. But I wanted to
let the BBN know that they canstay connected to the Cats with the Big
Blue Brew, presented by Commonwealth CreditUnion. It's the only official newsletter of
UK Athletics. Sign up today atUK Athletics dot com Big Blue Brew.
The Big Blue Brew is completely freeand hits inboxes every weekday morning at uk
(08:05):
Athletics dot com slash Big Blue Brew. You have loved the gift game.
Yeah, BBN has loved the giftgame. We stopped a meeting because we
got an alert that you put agift out the other day. Where did
the idea come from? How muchhave you loved it? And uh what
else we got started against? It'sreally taken off. Yeah, So you
(08:30):
know I did at Utah Valley,I did at BYU just sent out little
gifts here and there when we landa recruit or this and that, and
all of a sudden I got hereand like I've always kind of put out
different ones, but I put outthat first boom and everyone's like, oh,
it's boom, it's this, it'sthat, And I was like,
well, I got to stick withthat one now. And then the last
(08:50):
three or four I've been able totalk to recruits about which one they want
to do, and they're like, let's do this one, let's do that
one. Like not only am Igetting you know, BBN excited, but
like recruits parents are hitting me uplike all men, I love this,
keep on doing it. So it'spretty neat. It's a nice way to
(09:11):
connect the players before they've even officiallybeen announced a player. When you talk
two guys and you let them know, so this is what we got going.
How excited are they to kind ofput some Easter eggs out there for
Oh, they're so excited. They'reso excited. I mean, Chris Trent,
all those guys, Kobe Brea wasso excited to do it. You
(09:37):
know, at breakfast, He's like, let's do this one. It was
awesome. It's pretty cool when yousee BBN trying to guess who it is
Trent to know. The most recentone with the Joker. I don't know
if you noticed this, but peoplefound a picture where he had joker shorts
and they figured it out. Yeah, it's it's nuts, it's awesome.
But that's what you want. Youwant people so invested that want to win
(09:58):
at the highest level, and that'swhat we're going to do here. You
guys have started to assemble your well, your staff is assembled. You know
your team is coming into shape. You have a couple more spots left.
But what can you just say aboutthe guys that you've been able to go
out and get and commit to Kentucky. Oh, they've been remarkable, Like
(10:20):
getting to know them, talking tothem. They understand what this place is,
they understand what it's about. Andlike I said, we're recruiting guys
that want to win at the highestlevel and that's the most thing they care
that they care about. So it'sbeen it's been a great group of guys.
They already have their team group chatgoing. So it's something that we're
really excited about. We really likethis group. With the transfer portal and
(10:43):
just the way college basketball has changed, you see so much movement. Right
as you guys are coming in,having to build a team, having to
build chemistry between the coaching staff, between the players. You know, how
beneficial is it to have things likegroup me. But then once they get
to campus, is there anything thatyou and Mark have done to try to
get that team a little bit closer? Yeah? So, I mean we've
(11:05):
just spent a ton of time witheach other, Like there's no there's no
there's no secret to it. It'sjust spending time with each other, finding
out more about them they can findout more about us, Like we're doing
it as a staff still, Likewe were all out of town this last
week for four or five days andwe're doing FaceTime, you know, talks.
(11:26):
Just so we're trying to spend asmuch time as we can and we're
going to be on hyper drive whenwe get these guys here June tenth.
With that, you get thrown intoa job like this market's thrown into a
job. You get all the assistants, you start to build the roster.
But as a person, how hardis that to get thrown into another situation?
But it's the college basketball life.Yeah, it's it's nuts. I
(11:48):
haven't really been able. I haven'thad to move in like the last ten
years, so moving is just it'sa lot. Taking a new job is
a lot. So it's it's alot. A lot came at you fast
here? Was it three weeks ago? Was it a month ago? Yet?
A month ago? Almost? Imean it's just a lot. A
(12:09):
lot came quick and figuring that out. But first things first was trying to
put the roster together. I feellike we're in a good, good state
right there, and kind of go, you know, cross these things off
as they as they come up.Bbe I needs to hear that roster first.
Get a house in Lexington, suckit. That's that's that was the
(12:30):
plan, and my wife was onboard with it. So it was awesome
the way Big Blue Nation embraced coachPope and his family at the press conference.
How excited I know you have youngerkids, your wife, How excited
are you to get them here andfor them to be able to experience a
filled upp arena. I like thepicture behind it. I can't wait.
I can't wait. Like they're goingto absolutely love it. My my daughters,
(12:54):
you know, they just like tocome support for me. They don't
really understand all the basketball stuff. But my son, he's nine, he
is so excited. You know,he's watching every NBA game. He's like,
hey, Dad, this this guyJamal Murray. You know, he
just goes down the list and it'sfun. He He'll for the first you
know, a week or so orthe first couple of days. I was
(13:15):
working at home in Utah and myson would be like, all right,
Dad, which recruit can I watchright now? So everybody I'm talking about
he's like YouTube, you know,Andrew Carr or whatever. So it was
it was, it's fun. He'she's super excited to have him at an
age where you know he's involved inwatching the NBA and can understand it,
(13:37):
right, I mean, what doyou think it's going to be like to
step on Rapparina over some He's he'she's going to be crying probably, hes
be so excited everything. Have yourfamily here, Big Nation. Congratulations.
