Speaker 1 (00:00):
This podcast is presented by District seventh Social located in
the heart of the Distillery district in Eleventh.

Speaker 2 (00:07):
The seven is not just.

Speaker 1 (00:09):
A place to eat, but also a social hall, a
gathering spot as a source of entertainment, suitable for any celebration,
including a UK game. Make sure to stop by D
seven on game they were afterwards they will be saving
a seat for you.

Speaker 2 (00:25):
Morgan. UK goes into Oxford, Mississippi, comes out of win
with the win twenty to seventeen. What are your initial
thoughts on the Cats performance in Oxford?

Speaker 3 (00:38):
Man, it was a great, great game plan and great
execution of the game plan. I was very impressed with
our ability to continue to run the ball, engage our weapons,
and then the defense was fantastic. They were fantastic.

Speaker 2 (00:58):
So when you talk about weapons, let's start with Brock
vander Griff eighteen for twenty eight two hundred and forty
three yards in a touchdown. What's your assessment of Brock
and his play overall?

Speaker 3 (01:10):
Yeah, this was Brock's best game. I mean, he wasn't
overly efficient in the past game, but he really managed,
in my opinion, really managed the game, both running pass
you know, two hundred and fifty yards almost in pass

(01:31):
passing yards, which was almost even really really comparable with
what Dart did. And I think going into that game,
if you're thinking, you know, we go almost yard for
yard in the past game with Dark, Yeah, that's a
really really good thing. So I thought Brock really managed
the game well, and I thought he showed his skill set.

(01:53):
I was really impressed with the game that he.

Speaker 2 (01:55):
Played last week. You and I had a conversation here
in the booth or we were talking about what needed
to happen in Oxford. You know, one of the things
that you talked about getting Brock in a rhythm early,
being able to control the clock. Cats control the clock
two to one, possessed the ball for forty minutes to
old missus twenty minutes. Another big thing that you said

(02:20):
Morgan as well, is that you thought that the offense
needed to go through damee keyth. I politely disagreed. I
thought that there were some other guys. Obviously, we both
agreed with the run game. You know, I thought maybe
trying to get the slot, get the tight ends a
little bit more involved. But talk about getting Brock into
the rhythm. Obviously, you know the run game included. But

(02:43):
you know, you look at Dayane Key targeted twelve times,
eight catches, one hundred and five yards in a touchdown.
What is it on film that you see from Dane
where you felt like the offense needed to move through
him after starting with the Ohio game.

Speaker 3 (02:59):
Yeah, I mean when you when you watch their offense
and you look at their compliment of weapons and you
couple that with just what you hear about his work
ethic and you hear about he being a Kentucky kid.
If you put that whole package together, I mean, he's

(03:19):
a great candidate for somebody that you run the offense through.
Very steady, very solid, strong in his route and his
route running. He's he's the type of guy that can
run the whole tree. And so you know, from a
play design perspective in the past game, he's who you
want to build that offense around. And you saw it

(03:43):
in the Ohio game. You know where they were able
to get him going in that game. But then when
you look at the box score from this Old Miss game, Okay,
all of a sudden hush, there go seven seven's popping
up and he's got some complimentary, complimentary routes off of
what Dane's doing. Then you mix in the tight end

(04:05):
Rodriguez with a big catch. So Dane has showed. Yeah,
Dana showed that he can be a leader in that
group and that he's somebody you can build the offense around.

Speaker 2 (04:18):
Barriyan Brown getting involved as well. Targeted five times, five
catches eighty eight yards obviously the hues explosive for forty
nine yards where he demonstrates the ability now only catch
the ball over the shoulder, but stop on a dime,
be able to get a little bit more yack. Talk
about his involvement as well in the offense this past week.

Speaker 3 (04:39):
Yeah, So a guy like Burying with his skill set
just this. First of all, the speed, I mean, he's
got elite speed. He'll be able to go in and
be a returner at the next level without really having
to work much at it. It enables you to take
some shots down the field, get some chunk yards, really

(05:01):
impact your yards per attempt. And you know, it's funny
you talk about a guy that's kind of dealt with
some drops and key situations. He goes up and makes
a high, high, high level play on that go ball
on fourth and seven. I think it was it's just
a big time play and he really stepped up in

(05:22):
a big way. So, you know, Barryon's a guy that
you can you can do a lot of things with.
He's a utility player, but if he can go and
connect on you can connect on deep balls with him.
It's really it really enables you to do a lot
of things offensively.

Speaker 2 (05:39):
On the other side of the ball. Jackson Dark this
Old Miss offense, they come in, they're number one statistically
and five or six offensive categories, averaging fifty five points
a game. One of the things that you said that
when you look back at the Georgia game and then
you looked at what Ole Miss was doing, you said,
you gotta figure out a way to hold them to

(06:04):
two thirds or half of their offensive production. How was
Brad White in this defense able to slow down Ole
Miss and keep them in check for most of the afternoon.

Speaker 3 (06:16):
Yeah, you know, we always say, and I'm sure you'll
agree with this, you know, the best defense plays less defense.

Speaker 2 (06:23):
Huh.

Speaker 3 (06:23):
So that was that was the first That was the
first key, right, you talk about it. Two to one
in time of possession. That means that those guys up
front were likely fresh. It means that those defensive backs
were likely fresh from having to chase some of their
studs outside. Being able to get off the field and

(06:47):
being able to play less place defensively was a huge
key for this game. You could tell that that was
that was a big part of what Stoopson company wanted
to do. Possessed the ball, offense was able to do that,
defense was able to get off the field. I mean
that was huge. And then moreover disruption in the past game, right.
You know, typically Stoop's defenses play a lot of his

(07:11):
own coverage and that allows for really good offensive systems
to kind of sit back and have to throw balls
in the tight windows. We were able to get pressure
on Dark and that was that proved to be critical.

Speaker 2 (07:26):
At times with a three man rush, at times with
a four, and with a not a lot of blitzing.
I thought that those guys did a really good job
when they did blitzing. You know, they brought one. I
will say that, you know, the big fourth down play
where Trey Harris is able to catch it and go.
That was one of the few ones where you kind
of find yourself. I don't know if it was if

(07:46):
it was cover one or uh, you know, cover one
where you try to get to them. But I mean,
ultimately those guys were really good. Trey Harris really good
wide receiver. He was targeting fifteen times with eleven catches
one hundred and seven six yards, one hundred and sixteen
of them being yak yards and a touchdown. But being

(08:07):
able to kind of control this offense in a sense
with your best cover corner. You know, at home in Lexington,
we saw DJ Waller would increase reps. We saw JQ
Hardaway both two big corners six two sixty three. What
did you see from those guys, uh, in terms of
being able to being able to help slow down this

(08:31):
old Miss passing attack man.

Speaker 3 (08:33):
They really held up right. I think you go into
that game thinking that your top pick corner is out
of the game against an Ole Miss team that has
a very explosive offense in your worry, and I do
think that's one of the benefits from running as much
zone as we run, you can you can plug in
some guys that use great technique and are able to

(08:54):
kind of rally and tackle their guys. And we were
able to be as disruptive enough up front that when
we you know, when we dropped into some of our coverages.
You know, those windows were tight and they were trying
to have they were having to complete those in the
tight windows, and that's that's tough to do for a
lot of quarterbacks over over the course of the game.

Speaker 2 (09:13):
Absolutely, Man, Absolutely anything else Morgan you want to you
want to touch on.

Speaker 3 (09:19):
We always talk about trying to identify who's in control
of the game. And one of the big indicators in
stats you can look at is Russia's incompletions. And I
was just making a note Kentucky had forty seven looks
like forty seven rush Russias eighteen completions. Ole miss had

(09:41):
twenty nine rushes, eighteen completions, and that you know that
indicates who's in who's in control of the game. Well,
Kentucky was in control of that game.

Speaker 2 (09:53):
For sure, and that's evidenced by a lot of things
like you mentioned the forty seven Russias, one hundred and
fifty six yards on the ground, two hundred and forty
three yards in the air. Man, just all around, just
a really really good performance by the offense. And you
mentioned that fresh defense.

Speaker 3 (10:12):
So just kind of looking at some of the things
you could tell Jeremy from you know, what UK was
trying to do and what Bush was trying to do
is the quarterback run and the quarterback option run game
was a huge part of it. You know, we ended
up getting nine Wimsat carries along with an additional and

(10:35):
now some of these are you know, floaded numbers, but
seventeen Vandergrift carries, right, So it was no doubt that
they wanted the quarterback to be a part of the
run game.

Speaker 2 (10:47):
I felt like the rest they didn't call. There wasn't
a lot of pass interferences called in this game. I
felt like some of the defensive backs were draped on
some of our wide receivers on a few of these
these inbreaking routes already through the first as I have.

Speaker 3 (11:02):
Yeah, they let them play, especially when you go on
the road too and you get a lot of this
tight man coverage or at least you know, it looks
like they had they were at least man underneath. They're
just not gonna call p I or hold on every play.
And so these guys were clearly aggressive with our with

(11:23):
our receivers, and our receivers have gotta be They've got
to know that they're gonna be aggressive
