Speaker 1 (00:00):
Welcome to Behind Kentucky Football, presented by District seven Social.
Speaker 2 (00:05):
Welcome to the Wildcat Whip. Dick Gabriel, Jeff Picoro, Tom Leech.
Let's talk Kentucky Florida. It's so interesting where this game
is in the minds of Kentucky fans Florida fans prior
to the season. Tom, I don't know about you, but
I heard media people, I heard fans. They didn't quite
(00:26):
dismiss this game, but the tone was, well, we'll beat them.
Speaker 3 (00:31):
I'll imagine that changed in the last six years. Yes,
because twenty eighteen, Kentucky goes down to Florida for the
first time and gets a win for the first time
since nineteen eighty six in the series it won since
seventy nine in games right and now all of a sudden,
Kentucky's winning with regularity in this series. But in yeah,
and this Kentucky's coming off a very disappointing performance Florida,
(00:55):
although having lost last week, coming off I would think
an encouraging performance to go in and take Tennessee to
overtime in Knoxville. Their second half of their schedule is
just brutal, so it will I mean, I know it's
a lot of money to for them to make a
coaching change, but it's hard to imagine he will coach.
Napier will stand the pressure if they things don't go
(01:18):
well from this point forward, starting with this game.
Speaker 4 (01:20):
But you know, Dick, there's the elephant in the room.
You have tibas injuries, and you think Kentucky had as
a bad day and don't even scratch the surface of
what happened to Florida. So Graham Mertz, who almost came
to Kentucky after three years at Wisconsin, goes to Florida.
Had a great year last year, was having a good
year this year. He tears his ACL last week, so
he's done for the season. He's done his careers over Also,
(01:41):
their top offensive lineman who they got from Arkansas, he
stole him away in the transfer portal. It will not
play Devin Manuel, he's out. Three of their running backs
are listed as questionable to doubtful. So they have eight
starters that are listed as questionable or doubtful for the
game and two that are out.
Speaker 2 (01:58):
So that's particularly oneah and that's which plays right into
Kentucky strength. You know, they line up against that Kentucky
defensive front, and they don't. They don't have other their eras.
Speaker 4 (02:11):
But how many times have we seen a quarterbacks come
off the bench the next thing you know, he's Heisman
Trophy candidate after player.
Speaker 3 (02:18):
Last week was an unusual type of attack to prepare
for with some of those optional elements. This is, although
with a new quarterback, still more conventional and Kentucky you know,
gave up twenty points. They played well enough to give
them the team a chance to win. But Brad White
this week said he thought the becauyse of the defensive side.
(02:40):
I thought it was their worst game of the year.
So you would think a defense that you know, has
taken a lot of pride in its performances this season
will bounce back with a big chip on their shoulder.
Speaker 2 (02:50):
Yeah.
Speaker 4 (02:51):
I also think that this defense is now become the
calling card for this team too, and I think that
they like that if you want to call it on
their shoulders, so to speak. They want to be known
as a defensive team, a tough, hard nosed defense, which
they are. And there's a little little things like, for instance,
I thought a play that you know, I don't really
(03:13):
comment on on the radio when the game's going on
but the third and inches where the quarterback looks to
the sidelines, he's going, what what and the tight end
runs in and takes the spantages.
Speaker 3 (03:23):
Yeah, and they.
Speaker 4 (03:24):
Get The only guy on the Kentucky defense that saw
that coming was Dumas Johnson, John Doomis Johnson. He runs
to the middle. You gotta alert the other guys. Walker's
standing up when the ball's net. He's standing up. That
can't happen. You don't keep you look at your you
look at the ball, and you look into the backfield.
(03:44):
You know what the call is. It's either feeding stone,
which means you don't move, or it's goal line no line,
meaning you are going low and you're trying to stop him.
You're not looking at their sideline to see what the
quarterback's looking at because they got duped. And I think
that that's a that's a play that those type of
things can't happen.
Speaker 3 (04:03):
Yeah, because the edge is just so thin between you know,
you've got Texas and Georgia who are playing this weekend,
and then Alabama Tennessee close up there, Tennessee, but then
I mean somewhere in there. I mean Tennessee lost to
Arkansas nearly lost at home to Florida. So maybe from
Tennessee Ole Miss lsu on down through most of the
(04:25):
league on a given day, the origin is not that great,
right if you're not focused.
Speaker 2 (04:31):
After that twenty eighteen game. I don't know if you
remember this, Jeff, but we were doing a feature story
for the Marks Troops TV show and we went into
the coaches or into the meeting room and Georgiasapo a
j broke down video for us and it was end
(04:52):
zone video and it was basically example after example of
how the Kentucky offensive line this was in twenty eighteen.
This was the original Big Blue Wall physically manhandled that
Florida team. And the celebrity Cold Open guests this week
is Kenneth Horsey, who was a freshman on that team.
(05:16):
But we just in chip chatting he talked about how
being more physical is what paid off for Kentucky in
twenty eighteen, and you wonder about the old line doing
that this week.
Speaker 4 (05:28):
Well, but Tom said, Tom, what to practice a couple
times this week. It looks like they're probably gonna have
courtland Ford available this week. At least he's practiced. That
gives him some depth on that offensive front. So now
you're not putting in nothing against these young guys Malachi
in them. But now you've got a guy that started
what fourteen games fifteen sixteen games in his career that's
(05:49):
coming in in a big presence there on that right side.
So that helps you could get Chip Trayina back this week.
He's a very physical running back that could help.
Speaker 3 (05:59):
Having in in an o line. I always go back
to the Lake Guy Morris's line. First year I was
doing games, I was in there on a Sunday sitting
with coach Bobby and watching a tape of a game
they had lost the day before, and the oline didn't
play well among others for the only reason. But anyway,
Guimo came to the door and looks at all. He said,
Ali got one problem. I only got five and they
(06:20):
know it, and you know there is something to that.
There's a lot to that actually, and so you know,
having a guy like Ford who they certainly would trust,
maybe raises the play of the guys that he would
sub in for.
Speaker 1 (06:34):

Speaker 2 (06:55):
Looking back on that twenty eighteen game, whether the team
to snapped the there were so many big plays on
both sides of the ball, but Benny Snell with chunk runs,
Lynn Bowden with big plays, including a long touchdown play,
David Bouvier catches the first touchdown pass of the game,
sneaks behind the defense, and Terry Wilson handled their pressures
(07:18):
so well. And I've told the story before, but the
students who like to heckle me on the sidelines and
it's fun done. It's not as nasty as it is
in other places. But this one kid who was giving
me a lot of lip early gets my attention about
halfway through the second quarter and I took my head
set off and he said your quarterback. I said, yeah,
(07:42):
he's awesome, because Terry Wilson was running all over the Gators.
So they've just got to cut it loose, basically easier
said than done.
Speaker 4 (07:51):
Yeah, and that's the big question, Thomas, Why haven't they
had the chunk plays that were used to That's the
thing that just.
Speaker 3 (07:57):
Bush Hamdon was talking about it this week. Brockmansed it
after game on Saturday, he said, I don't know if
Andy played one snap of man defense. Yeah, in the game.
Bush talked about it on Tuesday that they're getting that
kind of look from most teams. So maybe if you
get a train him back, we'll see if he's you know,
(08:17):
if he's back, and how much they would use him.
But coach Doop said on Monday that you know he's
gonna get a get a chance in practice, two or
thirty pound guy, fresh legs, maybe he The one way
you get him to have to put some pressure on
is to start running down big chunks of yardage and
they have to bring an extra guy maybe into the box,
(08:38):
and you get a man to man matchup more often
to give those receivers a chance to make big plays.
Speaker 4 (08:43):
But you know the one thing that Florida has is
has always been, is they all they play a lot
of man coverage too, because great athletes nervado that they have. Yeah,
we don't plays on we play man. Remember, Florida is
the team that every play they're going to be grabbing
Jersey say that because that's just the way they do. Yeah,
(09:05):
you could throw a flag almost every play.
Speaker 2 (09:07):
You're talking about Tampa to the two deeps to take
away that that deep ball with this can I understand
it when Couch was here, Craig East, you're not going
to beat us with a deep ball, and Cat said fine,
and he just carved people. Yeah. But do you think
with this Kentucky team it's a Barryon Brown kind of thing.
(09:27):
You're not gonna beat us deep with Barryon Brown or
Dane Key. Yeah.
Speaker 4 (09:30):
I think it's Barryon Brown. He's kind of like, I
forget his name, the kid that we had that went
to Oklahoma for his senior Yeardet. Yeah, but Deet could
really take the top off, right. I mean, so they're
going to slide coverage towards him, but that leaves the underside,
that leaves Ferrier, and that leaves Macklin and that dan
Key is dan Key. The thing that I like most
(09:52):
about him is that he's not afraid to go over
the middle, and a lot of receivers don't like going
there because you know, even if you drop the you're
gonna get hit and you could get really hit hard
going over the middle, but he goes he goes through
the middle like a champ man.
Speaker 2 (10:06):
I was going to bring up Dane next because and
I'm not laying everything in his feet, but the personal
foul call at the beginning of the Vandy game. And
here's the thing, and Stoops didn't mention him my name,
but he didn't mention the guy who's been our best
player and went on from there a leader, you know.
And it's going to take a really disciplined approach free
(10:29):
wheeling football, but a disciplined approach to win in Gainesville,
starting with the older guys. And one of the theories
I've kind of developed, and you guys can jump in
on this if you want. But with so much portal traffic,
excuse me, the older guys on your team now quite
(10:51):
often have been elsewhere to begin their careers.
Speaker 3 (10:57):
Don't have a lot of equity in the position exactly.
Speaker 2 (11:00):
You know. And Jeff, I can ask you this, since
you were there for five years, doesn't that make it
more difficult for an older player to establish himself as
a leader. Hey, nice to meet you.
Speaker 3 (11:10):
Follow me.
Speaker 4 (11:11):
You know, it's interesting. I was just talking to mister
Kraft the other night and he was talking about leadership,
and it was Monday night, Tom after coach the show,
and I said, here's what you got to understand. You
got twenty to twenty five freshmen coming in every year, right,
(11:31):
so you got twenty five guys, So you got fifteen
guys that you get through the portal. That's forty guys.
You have eighty five scholarship players. So almost happier team
are new guys coming in because of this portal thing.
And you take old miss Kakes it to the next
level with that, There's not any continuity how they do it.
Speaker 3 (11:48):
I don't know.
Speaker 4 (11:49):
It's amazing to me.
Speaker 3 (11:50):
I remember when you.
Speaker 2 (11:51):
Take that many through the portal. If you take man
twenty five, that didn't count against your depends on.
Speaker 4 (11:57):
How many openings that you have and what how you're
gonna pay them to play, as I do the air
quotes with my fingers. But I remember when coach Clayburn
came in and Coach Kursey left and we lost Doug
Williams went to Texas A and m and John Gay
went to Western. You know, we lost several really really
good players and there was that void there because Doug
(12:18):
was going to be the next Warren Bryant, you know,
and John Gay was a really good player. And you know,
we had different guys at different positions that left, and
we're like, how are we going to fill these holes?
Speaker 3 (12:30):
Now?
Speaker 4 (12:30):
They just you just go out and say I need
a strong safety and I need this, I need that
free agency. Yeah, it's crazy.
Speaker 2 (12:35):
So how do they beat Florida?
Speaker 3 (12:38):
Well, they are going to need to be able to
score somewhere in the twenties. I would think at minimum
twenty four probably a good number, and they did. If
they'd done that against Vanderbilt, they would have won the game,
and there were ample opportunities to do it, even with
seven possessions. And so they've got an automatic guy field
(13:01):
goals and pats. How about start with letting him have
a chance to use his leg and then too, I
mean in the red zone scoring, they're very good. It's
gonna get better at making the plays to get it
in the end zone when they get down there. Because
the thing is it's a slower pace game and the
Kentucky's playing and you're gonna have fewer opportunities maybe, so
(13:25):
must maximize the ones that you get. So you know,
I think when you're a team like Kentucky that's relying
on good defense and they're not making many turnovers.
Speaker 2 (13:37):
So.
Speaker 3 (13:40):
Do everything you can to try to get off to
a good start.
Speaker 4 (13:42):
Dick, I think the biggest thing. You're gonna laugh when
I say this. Possibly, but I was more worried about
the Vanderbilt game than this game because.
Speaker 2 (13:50):
I'll give you the dog whistle.
Speaker 4 (13:53):
They put forty on Alabama. Alabama's not a great defense,
but they're good. It's Alabama and they put four on him.
It wasn't they beat him that did. I did, surprise,
we count Kentucky beats, told Miss Vandy can win. It
was the way they won, the big plays, the way
they went front on fourth down and threw deep like
Kentucky did against Ole Miss for a touchdown. Uh, the
(14:15):
big the big chunk plays that Vandy got. And I
was like against Bama against Bama, and then I'm looking
at him going, wow, they could do that against Kentucky.
And there were four We were fourteen point fair say
week Kentucky.
Speaker 3 (14:28):
No way.
Speaker 4 (14:29):
Florida is a little more conventional. You knew what they
were gonna do with birds in the pocket. He's a
pocket guy now, they have that the run option, run
pass option, so it's gonna be different. But they only
had seven possessions in that Vanderbilt game.
Speaker 3 (14:42):
Seven.
Speaker 4 (14:43):
They gotta get more than that. They got to play
a little faster. Get Yeah, they have to get in
a rhythm. There was no rhythm to that game at
all last week.
Speaker 3 (14:52):
Now you're right about that.
Speaker 2 (14:53):
And uh, if they hold Florida to twenty, well, you
know you gotta think they got a shot exactly. But
steal possessions, make plays on defense the way they did
at the end in twenty eighteen, and just try to
make things happen and take the crowd into the game,
which they which they've done.
Speaker 3 (15:11):
It does times very well down there.
Speaker 1 (15:13):
That's gonna do it for now.
Speaker 2 (15:15):
For Tom Leash and Jeff Pacorrel, thanks for joining us
in the Wildcat Whip and we'll see you next week.
