Welcome to Behind Kentucky Football presented by District seven Social.
Speaker 5 (01:35):
Welcome to the Wildcat Whip. Nick Gabriel, Tom Leech, Jeff Becore.
Where to talk football, of course, On the Wildcat Whip,
Kentucky taking on Murray State. This is supposed to be
the get well game. All due respected. Murray's had some
really good teams in the past, but this is not
a good football team.
Speaker 6 (01:53):
You guys. It's not one of them.
Speaker 5 (01:54):
You guys have got your charts going, You've crunched the numbers.
God bless their hearts. They just they won one game
and they just don't have enough to compete, do they?
Speaker 7 (02:04):
No, they they don't. I remember some great E k U.
Murray game, Yes, in the one double yeah yeah, and
the other the other thing I remember, you guys will
remember this. This was sixteen seventeen. Steven Johnson's hurt. Yeah,
and they're playing Austin p and they decided to try
(02:25):
to get through the game without using him, and they
get a pick six like maybe on the first play,
and they're down.
Speaker 5 (02:31):
Like somebody else started a quarterback.
Speaker 7 (02:33):
Yeah, and they end up when you know, coming back
and blowing them out as was expected. But you know
that was, you know, a similar situation and that there's
some you know question of who's going to be the
starting quarterback this week because of the injury that Brock
suffered in the last game down at Tennessee. And it's
a much inferior opponent. So I've I thought Kentucky played
(02:57):
I don't know, but you guys were expecting at Tennessee.
I thought they really get in the circumstances with their
personnel losses, especially on defense and then on offense. As
the game started, I really thought they played pretty well.
Speaker 6 (03:07):
I was amazed.
Speaker 8 (03:07):
I thought they were going to get annihilated, seriously, and
we've covered that game before at Tennessee.
Speaker 7 (03:12):
And I thought the best chance they had if they
were going to shock the world and get an upset,
that would give them a chance to maybe keep the
ball street going. I thought, well, it'll probably be it
would more likely be Texas because they'd have a week
off get well game against a team like Murray and
then you'd take your shot. But they played well against Tennessee,
(03:33):
so they need now to have the get well game.
Speaker 8 (03:35):
I still think we have not seen the best of
them yet. Ole Miss was close to being a complete game.
But again in the Tennessee game, if you look back,
penalties at the you know, just just killed this team,
and then.
Speaker 7 (03:50):
And then be getting killed with turnovers. Yeah.
Speaker 8 (03:52):
I was gonna say the ball hits in two interceptions
hit the hands of the receiver. Yeah, I mean you
just got to catch the football.
Speaker 5 (04:00):
Did they lack if you can remember back to the
Ole Miss game, because I would have thought that that
was their best. We know they they came up short
against Georgia a couple of plays and they win that game.
But I don't know how much better could they have
played against them Miss. I just think given the hostile
territory and all that.
Speaker 8 (04:17):
The one thing that's missing, and it kind of is
still missing. I think through this whole season it's the
chunk plays. Yeah, the big plays. And I meant one,
they had one, So I was gonna say they had one.
You get four or five you know when you play,
when you watch it, and I hate going back to
any of the top ten teams. Oregon's a great example.
They get every drive it seems like that. You're like, again,
(04:39):
they get a thirty yard pass, they get a twenty
five yard run, and it's just it's hard because this
offense almost has to be perfect, and you see them
pounding and pounding and pounding their way down the field
and they just for whatever reason, they can't spring. I mean,
they've run Burying, they've run Brown Stevens on that end
(05:00):
around you know, the sweep, and they just they've been close,
but they just haven't had that.
Speaker 6 (05:04):
Back's when they scouted though. People are ready for that.
Speaker 5 (05:07):
But you're talking more about downfield.
Speaker 7 (05:09):
Throwing, right, But they got a big chunk play at
the start of the Tennessee yes on a run. So
now maybe he could give you a little bit of
that and maybe you get a couple of twenty plus
runs in a game from him and then you alternate
him with Simil karmbay Uh. But then offensively, you know,
they had a tight end down the scene. Yep, almost
(05:29):
thirty yards catus, So you know, maybe I thought one
thing with Brock as a first time starter. He was
maybe locking a little too much on Dane, who's been
very good obviously, But you know, maybe you can spread
the ball around a little bit more.
Speaker 8 (05:45):
Yeah, and again I think that, and this happens to
every quarterback, that you get a little gun shy when
you're getting pounded back there. It happened to Randy Jenkins
if you remember back when when Randy was the quarterback,
because he was basically doing the same thing back then.
We took the step from the center and he would
take his drop and turn around, there'd be two guys
breathing down his neck and he just had to get
(06:05):
rid of the ball. And it's kind of been the
case here. Uh So Brock now has gotten a little
skintish back there a lot of times. The one thing
that he does that it's fixable up. But a lot
of quarterbacks when they try to escape, they try to
get out of the pocket. What makes you don't want
to compare him to Peyton Manning, but what makes a
lot of great quarterbacks great is the way they can
(06:27):
move up in the pocket. Okay, great example is your
guy Aaron Rodgers. He's not fast at all, but he
moves in the pocket to give himself time. He just
takes a little step this way, a little step this way,
step up where he can then get the pass away
and and and.
Speaker 5 (06:41):
It's whole feeling.
Speaker 6 (06:42):
Yes, yeah, that and again I think this comes from
him not.
Speaker 8 (06:46):
Playing the last three years, basically that he's lost that
clock in his head because how many times have we
said get rid of the ball and he takes the sack.
So he's learning this is again and again. If he
plays this week, this is a game where he should excel. Yeah,
because the one thing I noticed, Tom, and you can
back me up with this. I mean they've got a
(07:06):
linebackers one hundred and ninety seven pounds, and I mean
the size is just it. It's a huge and it
could be a monumental difference in this game where you
should be able to just plow the row.
Speaker 7 (07:17):
Yeah, they should be able to control the line of
scrimmage on both sides of the ball.
Speaker 6 (07:22):
You know.
Speaker 7 (07:23):
Defensively, they're still shorthanded, but they think they'll get Hairston
back this week, which helps. And still not gonna have Jackson,
I'm assuming no Weaver. We don't get the availability report
because it's not an SEC opponent. Right, but none of that.
Those personal things shouldn't matter as much in this this matchup.
Speaker 6 (07:44):
So what you want to do?
Speaker 7 (07:46):
Play clean, don't turn the ball over, yes, and go
out and look good and just get a feel just
stop the losing streak, feel good, make some hit some
big plays, get a little more confident and then you know,
to take some positivity out of this week. Don't have
a lot of penalties, don't be sloppy, don't make turnovers.
Just be clean and sharp and give yourself something to
(08:09):
build on going into those last two games.
Speaker 4 (08:11):

Speaker 5 (08:32):
Jeff, you played on a teammate to bring it up
with you know, by way of comparison, that didn't win
any games. Then they turned around, you guys turned around
one A couple had a couple of bull bids.
Speaker 8 (08:42):
You.
Speaker 5 (08:43):
I gotta think that moment in the locker room when
you first get back in there after a win and
it's a collective party, and you miss that in a
season like Murray's having. Now, with one exception, you guys
never had a shot one season.
Speaker 6 (09:00):
The Kentucky locker room is the same way. Now that's
my point.
Speaker 5 (09:02):
You know, when is the last time they had that
feel good moment?
Speaker 6 (09:05):
Right? It does?
Speaker 8 (09:07):
It does because because you start getting in your head,
we can't make a mistake, because you make a mistake
and go, oh here we go. Yeah, you know, and
then it just snowballs. And you see it with every
team that's on a losing streak. But here's the thing
that I can't remember. The game was two years ago.
We all were saying, okay, remember when bo Allen was
gonna get to play like half the game, guys, And
at halftime it was like fourteen to seven. They were like, okay,
(09:30):
well they got to you know, and it never happened.
It was a close game. They end up winning by
I think fourteen. I can't remember Kent State or somebody
like that. But you know, this is a game where
I really want to see Cutter out there some and
I'm talking like consecutive series to get a rhythm because
he needs to learn. And I went back and the
kids at the TV station, they're asking me, why shouldn't
(09:53):
he have thrown that pass? And so I kind of
pulled the I pulled the film up like we used
to do on the Old Coaches Show, and I said,
why his head because they're playing a man a man free,
meaning there's one one floor single hih. Yeah, there was
a single high safety and everybody else's man. And as
soon as he takes a step, he looks this way
to his right, even though they're on the left hash
(10:14):
he looks to his right.
Speaker 6 (10:14):
Because Dane is running an out pattern.
Speaker 5 (10:16):
And as soon as Ward already knows, they're going to
be looking a doing for Dane.
Speaker 8 (10:21):
So as soon as he does that, the safety in
the middle of the field takes off right to where
that pass would be, to kind of double copboard Dane
at Burry and has beating his guy on the back side,
which is actually the short side of the field, and
he's got the whole middle open, so all he has
to do is just lob it out there and let
a four to three guy run and get it. Instead,
(10:41):
he throws it from the left hash all the way
to the sideline on the other side. So he's throwing
forty five yards for a twelve yard pass. So you
do the do the triangulation math, and the cornerback just
sits there and went easy, not against a four to
three corner back, and he just steps in front and
runs it in. So in this game he can They're
not going to be as fast, they're not going to
(11:03):
be as well coached. He'll be able to do some
things here and place. He's gonna have some time to
sit back there and throw. And I think if Brock
does play, it's a it's a game for him to
get some confidence as well or Gavin whoever.
Speaker 7 (11:15):
Yes, I think that's definitely true for Brock because you know,
he had some good moments in that Tennessee game before
he got hurt.
Speaker 6 (11:26):
Yep.
Speaker 7 (11:26):
Still, you know the sacks holding onto the ball, those
are That's something I think back to Andre Woodson's first
year as a starter, and he had a tendency to
be a little loose with the football and fumbled some
balls when he got hit and they had to they
cleaned that up, and he went a problem the next
two years and he became a great quarterback so that
that can get fixed, especially you know from one season
(11:46):
to the next. But you know, for Brock, just to
have if it's him, Have or whoever the quarterback, is
just to have a start where you the plays work
like they're upposed to work, and you don't turn it
over and you get into a rhythm and you know,
you find maybe a couple of new things that you
(12:07):
can put into the game plan for the next week,
because you know, if if this is a tight game
in the fourth quarter, something's gone way wrong.
Speaker 6 (12:16):
Obviously.
Speaker 7 (12:16):
I mean we've coaches won't say that, but we got
to be honest with people from that standpoint. But yeah,
this is a game that could do some good things
for them if it works out right.
Speaker 8 (12:29):
Did you think it was interesting when you when you're
putting the charts together their defense, Dick, they run an
old fashioned for to three, so they have two tackles,
two ends, and then they have three linebackers. They have
but Will Sam and you've been a linebacker, so you're like, wow,
it's a it's a four to three. Now, I don't know,
because they didn't list like a nickel guy. I'm assuming
(12:50):
it's another corner or a safety that can. But it'd
be very interesting because I would think with the speed
Kentucky possesses, even in the running back, they're going to
play a zone in the back. So I think you're
there gonna they're gonna have yeah that you're not gonna
see ahole lot of man. So there should be some
holes for these guys to manipulate.
Speaker 5 (13:06):
The question I have, excuse me, is we talked about Maxwell,
Harriston and Rock and other guys who have been out injured.
I realized the value of coming back and getting game experience.
But with some of your veterans guys who have been
banged up, I'm thinking about the D line.
Speaker 6 (13:23):
Why play them?
Speaker 8 (13:23):
Why play You don't need to, you know well, but
you want to remember this.
Speaker 6 (13:27):
You have to stay sharp.
Speaker 8 (13:28):
But you have four games to play with like a freshman.
Understand that's what you're talking about.
Speaker 7 (13:32):
Red shirt.
Speaker 6 (13:33):
Yeah, they're trying to manipulate.
Speaker 8 (13:35):
So Harriston could actually play these next three games and
get red shirts.
Speaker 5 (13:39):
Oh you're thinking of a veteran being.
Speaker 8 (13:41):
Yeah, I'm talking can still take a red shirt. He
could come back next year. He's only a junior anyway,
but he could even.
Speaker 5 (13:47):
Red shirt situations decide. You got Texas and Louisville coming.
Speaker 6 (13:51):
Up, right, and those are the games? Would it not be?
Speaker 5 (13:53):
And I'm not second guessing coaches, I'm just asking out
of ignorance. You know how how important is that game
experience to get sharp again if you've been out for
a while, looking ahead to Texas and Louisville versus the
rest and staying healthier.
Speaker 6 (14:08):
You know what I mean?
Speaker 8 (14:08):
I think Max has to play to be effective next week.
Speaker 6 (14:12):
I agree.
Speaker 8 (14:12):
I don't think you can just I don't think you
can throw him out there against Texas something know. Those
guys look, get out there and plug a hole. I
don't think it's as important. But for a skilled position guy,
I think that like Derek Jackson, he.
Speaker 6 (14:26):
Doesn't need to play. He knows what he's doing. It's
not going to hurt him.
Speaker 8 (14:29):
And JJ too, I mean, goodness, it's a sixty year
playing football. I think he knows what he's doing out there.
Those guys plug and play.
Speaker 7 (14:35):
And they have some guys in the D line or
linebacker line that still have that number of games they
can play with yet and still be red shirt. Sure
of godfreeze that way against Tennessee. You know, some of
those guys that especially with them being down some guys
on the defensive side, and we don't know when some
(14:56):
guys are coming back that got this.
Speaker 6 (14:58):
This kind of opportunity gets some.
Speaker 7 (15:00):
Extended reps could be meaningful for you know a few
of those younger guys that maybe can give you a
little more depth in the final two games if they
get a lot on tape and then can you know,
get a little confidence out of that to and gain
the trust of the coaches that they'll be in the
right place and do the right thing for the games
(15:21):
that will follow. And so that could be helpful on
the on the defensive side, because you know, they were
really really shorthanded it Tennessee.
Speaker 5 (15:28):
People who wonder why a Kentucky schedule is a game
like this, this is a perfect example. You're coming off
of bye week and you need to get well, you
need to build some coffybody does everybody does it, and
you need to have it. Plus it helps let's face
