Speaker 1 (00:00):
Welcome to Behind Kentucky Football, presented by District seven Social.

Speaker 2 (00:04):
Welcome to the wildcad Whip at Gambrielle, Tom Lead, Jeff
picorl Let's tatch in football Kentucky and Texas.

Speaker 3 (00:11):
I have been to Austin. You've been to Austin.

Speaker 4 (00:13):
I don't know if you've never been in one time Texas.

Speaker 5 (00:16):
But now Patrick sparks nearly shooting Kentucky.

Speaker 2 (00:19):
I had a meeting in Austin when I worked down there,
didn't see a game there. Went to the Skywriters stop
in Austin. I've worked baseball twice in Round Rock, which
is a suburb.

Speaker 5 (00:30):
That I am so looking.

Speaker 4 (00:31):
Astros is it?

Speaker 5 (00:32):
Is it? The Astros?

Speaker 6 (00:35):
Yeah, I have to go tomorrow night.

Speaker 4 (00:39):
I've heard some friends of whe say, you've got to go.

Speaker 6 (00:42):
It's the coolest attraction in all of Austin and it's free.

Speaker 4 (00:47):
It's called the Bats of Austin.

Speaker 5 (00:49):
You tweeted them.

Speaker 6 (00:50):
There is a bridge, oh yeah, that goes over the
river into downtown Austin, Texas, and they put the new
bridge right on top of it, so there's basically like
a foot between the old bridge and the new bridge.
A million and a half bats live in that crevice
of this thing, and every night at dusk they awe

(01:12):
a million bats, a million and a half bats come
out and go down the river and eat all the
bisquity at the book. Things like it, Yes, and people
stand on the bridge and take videos of.

Speaker 4 (01:20):
Them flying over and stuff. Is supposedly the coolest thing ever.

Speaker 5 (01:23):
All right, that's worth checking out.

Speaker 4 (01:25):
That's of Austin.

Speaker 5 (01:26):
That's we're checking out.

Speaker 4 (01:27):
I asked your boy about that.

Speaker 3 (01:28):
Josh, Josh Hopkins, you'll be opening our broadcast.

Speaker 2 (01:31):
The actor Josh Hopkins Lexingon, son of the late great
Larry Hopkins, a former congressman and uh.

Speaker 3 (01:38):
Josh a product of Sayer High.

Speaker 2 (01:40):
School, played basketball there and now an actor, Hollywood actor.

Speaker 5 (01:43):
But lives in Austin. Actors can live anywhere.

Speaker 4 (01:46):
On Cougartown, which was a great on Cougar Town.

Speaker 2 (01:48):
He's on a show right now which is called Shrinking
on Apple TV.

Speaker 5 (01:53):
He's doing a guest at ARC with Harrison Ford. Rely.

Speaker 2 (01:55):
Yeah, it's a great show, great show. So uh yeah,
he'll up in the broadcast.

Speaker 5 (02:01):
So what are we going to talk about on Saturday?

Speaker 2 (02:04):
Will it be Texas beating Kentucky by three touchdowns? That's
basically the prediction from the Boys in the Desert and
every whe els. Last time we thought we would see
an Orange team destroy Kentucky.

Speaker 5 (02:16):
Didn't happen that way? Did it? In Knoxville? No, Kentucky played.

Speaker 7 (02:19):
You know, if they had not turned the ball over,
they would have probably been right there at the end
against Texas As. They were against Georgia and were against
Ole Miss and of course beat the Rebels. You see, yeah,
but I'm talking about Yeah, I guess Tennessee two weeks ago.
But when they played in September one point game against Georgia,
beat Old Miss. So you just go off past performance.

(02:43):
They there's every reason to believe they'll be in it
in the fourth quarter in this game. There are other
things I like for Kentucky to hang around, and that's
what you hope to do if you're Kentucky. Texas has
overall more talent, they're top five in the country. They
rarely lose games like this. But how would it happen, Well,
you hang around on the fourth quarter like Kentucky did

(03:05):
against Old Miss, you make a big play like Kentucky
did against Old Miss. You don't turn the ball over.
That's like Kentucky did against Ole Miss. They protected the
ball they had. Kentucky had four turnovers in five games
in September. They have twelve turnovers in the five games
since then.

Speaker 5 (03:21):
Can't do that.

Speaker 7 (03:22):
A win down there, but you know you're coming off
a win that stopped along losing streak. You got a
bunch of your guys rested, especially on defense, still thinning
of the secondary, but otherwise all our key guys will
be out there. So you know, there's some things to
like in the setup for this to give Kentucky a
chance to hang around.

Speaker 6 (03:41):
Let me put it this way too, As you just said,
Max is back. Max will be on their top receiver JQ,
I think has been one of the most improved players
from last year to this year.

Speaker 4 (03:50):
He's got two interceptions on the season.

Speaker 6 (03:52):
He's made some really nice plays, some really nice He
got the fumble, remember in the game, and then he
recovered himself. I'm not mistaken. But anyway, I really think
so that. I think your corners are fine, your safeties
are fine. You get Dion back right, you get Dumas
bag and pops it right in the middle of Doumas Johnson.

Speaker 4 (04:09):
Uh, you get JJ back.

Speaker 6 (04:12):
I don't think that they get blown out because of
that defense, and all those guys are rested. Now, look
that's three weeks, right, some of those guys two weeks,
some of them three weeks. At they're play, they're gonna
be very very fresh. On the defensive side, exact Josiah Hayseny.
They get huge because now you ad Dion back with Josiah,

(04:36):
with Silver, with Saunders, with Ribca, with Oxen Dine. Now
you've got that rotation that you're gonna need because they're huge,
right both sides of all. Texas has got just Texas guys,
big monsters up there. The only thing that worries me
is the offense and getting the chunk plays. Can they
get any of those plays against this team and turned

(04:56):
And that is.

Speaker 2 (04:57):
The biggest problem because for all we talk about here
about see the highlights quarterback arch Manning Quen you Weres, it's.

Speaker 3 (05:07):
The defense that's getting it done for Texas.

Speaker 6 (05:10):
Did it last week one of the best defenses in
exact football in Arkansas.

Speaker 2 (05:15):
Texas scored only twenty but held Arkansas O to ten
on the road yards per play, yards per game. They've
given a three touchdown passes all year. They give up
one hundred and thirty six passing yards per game.

Speaker 5 (05:28):
That's number one in the country.

Speaker 6 (05:29):
They shut out three straight opponents in the first half. Yeah,
that hasn't happened there. I think it's ever that they
sure shut those things out.

Speaker 2 (05:38):
And yet Kentucky the two games you were talking about,
and at times in other games controlled Temple, controlled the clock,
time and possession, giving in the Wildcats a chance to win.
They did that, of course by moving the chains. Can
they do that against this Texas defense?

Speaker 7 (05:54):
The concern as far as how it could get to
be what the linemakers think it'll be would be turning
it over Florida. Texas scored twenty one points off turnovers
and they blew out Florida. But you look at Texas.
I went back and looked at this just before I
came over here. They have played two teams from Power
four conferences with a winning record. Got blown out by Georgia,

(06:19):
won by three at Vandy.

Speaker 5 (06:20):
Yep.

Speaker 7 (06:21):
So the one knock they have had a you know,
a soft run. You know, this is Kentucky's fourth game
against the top ten team.

Speaker 6 (06:27):
And you know, I understand Arkansas. It's a huge game
for them. They used to play the Southwest Conference rivals.
They haven't played and all this time, but Arkansas played
right with him. No, I'm watching the tape that Arkansas
game with Okay, there's some nice receivers. One of them
might not play Mooney's he's banged up, but they don't

(06:48):
scare me like Tennessee did. Because Tennessee has track stars
on the outside. They have a great running back, huge line,
really good best running back. Right, they've lost three yeah,
you know, three running backs. It's just an interesting setup.
I'm still I shake my head sometimes. Quinn, youers at
Ohio State, couldn't start at Ohio State, right, He played

(07:10):
a little bit, He shared times, kind of like Chip
train them. Chip left, came to Kentucky, he left and
went there. We were just talking about this, Dick and I.
I don't think Quinn sits. He's there next year. The
Manny is not gonna sit for three years. No, right,
I mean he's not gonna come in and play one year.

Speaker 7 (07:29):
So he could lead Texas to a big year to
my yours and then go play somewhere else, right, right.

Speaker 4 (07:35):
Della Gabriel's done it. There's a couple of guys who've
done it.

Speaker 5 (07:38):
Yeah, Buddy.

Speaker 1 (07:38):
This podcast is presented by District seven Social located in
the heart of the Distillery District in Lexington. D seven
is not just a place to eat, but also a
social hall, a gathering spot and a source of entertainment
suitable for any celebration, including a UK game. Make sure
to stop by D seven on game day or afterwards.
They'll be saving this seat for you.

Speaker 5 (07:59):
Here's another factor for you.

Speaker 2 (08:01):
It won't win the game for Kentucky, but it might
help ever so slightly and any edge you can get.
It's senior Day, and we've all seen teams come out
exactly after Senior Day be a little distracted, So maybe
Kentucky gets off to a good start.

Speaker 3 (08:16):
The other thing, which I think is bigger is somebody
asked their keys in.

Speaker 2 (08:19):
About that, and of course he gave the template answer
for all coaches.

Speaker 3 (08:23):
Could just be a trap game. Oh, it's the biggest
game of the year as far.

Speaker 2 (08:26):
As I'm concerned. No, I don't think so at all.
I would love to hear a coach somedays say, you
know what, it just might be a trap game. But
you're coming off Arkansas and looking ahead to Texas A
and you.

Speaker 5 (08:37):
Live down in Texas.

Speaker 7 (08:38):
Yes, sir, you know how big that will be because
how long has it been since A and M and
that Texas played each other.

Speaker 5 (08:44):
Oh, it's it's been it's been a minute.

Speaker 4 (08:46):
Yeah, it's a M joined the SEC exactly, the.

Speaker 2 (08:51):
Talking about now and A and M left the Old
League Big twelve to get away from Texas.

Speaker 6 (08:58):
How about the A and M coach who was interviewed,
Oh they talked about Auburn. Dude, Yeah, you're looking ahead
to take you No, no, no, our minds are one
on Texas this week.

Speaker 4 (09:08):
Well, well I beant Auburn.

Speaker 5 (09:10):
That was fun.

Speaker 2 (09:11):
Well elco So anyway, I'm just thinking if they catch
the long line.

Speaker 5 (09:15):
Look, they're they're eighteen year old kids.

Speaker 2 (09:16):
Yeah, yeah, they're they're gonna say, Kentucky, Yeah we got this.

Speaker 5 (09:20):
Well, how about A and M.

Speaker 6 (09:21):
Dick.

Speaker 4 (09:21):
You got to get sevens. You can't go down and
get three first.

Speaker 5 (09:25):
You got to move the chains.

Speaker 6 (09:26):
But you can't when you get in the red zone.
You have to score touchdowns. That's what killed him against Tennessee.
They could have been up in that game early, killed
him against vander They've got to get sevens when they
get close.

Speaker 7 (09:37):
All true? Yeah, I mean just a lot of things.
I mean, like, we're from the Kentucky side, So I said,
they're listening, a 're just you know, drinking the blue
kool aid. Look, I know how tough it will be
to win at Texas As. I said, they don't lose
these kinds of games where they're a big favorite at home.
But it's kind of like a horse a horse race.

(09:59):
Sometimes the setup is just there where you see can
see something happening that's not expected.

Speaker 5 (10:06):
So and what I say, a boy not expected, you
know you want to have it.

Speaker 7 (10:11):
I think if you're Kentucky, your hope is to have
a chance to win in the fourth quarter. Really, I'll
keep going back to the Ole Miss game. That's what
you want. You're not going to beat Texas thirty five thirty,
but you might be able to beat them twenty to seventeen.
And that's what they have to try to do.

Speaker 6 (10:25):
You're you're a guy that does this a lot better
than me, because I can't remember who played with who
in different years and stuff. You know, obviously Benny Snell,
Oh yeah he was with No, he wasn't he was
with this guy. I think across the board, with the
exception of the offensive line and quarterback. This is probably
the most talented team that Stoops has had, maybe in
his entire time here. When you look at that defense

(10:47):
with Max back now right, with Dean back, with Pops
in the middle, you know this is as good a
defense as one where Josh Allen.

Speaker 5 (10:55):
Was I think when Djacks was healthy.

Speaker 2 (10:57):
Definitely Yeah with dj Yeah, yeah, it's just unfortun and
an offense. The line is still trying to find its
way and that's going to be the key, which.

Speaker 5 (11:05):
Leads me to my next question for you guys.

Speaker 2 (11:08):
Can they give Brock or Cutter, whoever's in there, time
to throw, time to go through progressions. Dane Key produces
thirty seven percent of Kentucky's passing yardage as a receiver.

Speaker 5 (11:20):
That's number one in the SEC.

Speaker 3 (11:22):
Those d backs for Texas are tremendous.

Speaker 5 (11:24):
You know, obviously they'll do.

Speaker 3 (11:26):
Everything they can to take him away. Tennessee did the same.

Speaker 2 (11:29):
So which receivers we saw abs Win take to catch
two touchdowns last week? Macklin made a great catch tight
ends are there? Can somebody else come forward.

Speaker 6 (11:41):
And help let me ask Tom this question because it's
kind of to your point here in what I've seen
in what I'm doing.

Speaker 4 (11:49):
They're not a big blitzing team. Top they rushed.

Speaker 6 (11:52):
They have two guys that have their hands down. Then
they have what they call a jack, and they have
a star, and they have a you know, they have
you know, but they have two guys with theirs down.

Speaker 4 (12:00):
Then they have two and they have an edge and
a jack. But that's it. They don't let the need
to probably.

Speaker 6 (12:05):
Because those four guys get the job done.

Speaker 7 (12:08):
And that's that's the big challenge for Kentucky is can
they make them have to do something they don't normally
do to bring some more pressure and they but whether
it's four or six that are coming, can Kentucky hold up?
And to your point about Dan Hardly Gilmore is starting
to come a little bit. Yes, So that gives you

(12:29):
another option. Seems like Kentucky's done a little better job
of spreading the ball around a couple two or three
to the tight end. Harley Gilmore. You get Barry Brown
back this week? Yeah, I don't know that Barrion's you know,
ideally you'd like to hit a deep shot with him.
I think what you hope in this game is a

(12:49):
flanker screen, you know, and break a tackle and turn
a short pass into a big play with his speed.
But those are some of the other ways they can
do it. Plus, will Cox has had two straight hundred
yard rushing games and that's something that they could hopefully
build on with him. You know, Demi has been just so,

(13:12):
you know, just reliable, but he's not h you know,
and the a back he's not. He has been for
this team and has done his best job in that role.
But will Cox is a guy that can, you know,
make big hits for you. And now he's starting to
do a little bit of that. So that's enough. They
weren't getting chunk plays. Well maybe you get a two
or three in the run game with him.

Speaker 5 (13:33):
All right, before we wrapped this up.

Speaker 4 (13:35):
Because our food is ready.

Speaker 3 (13:39):
Before we wrap this up, I got to ask you.

Speaker 5 (13:40):
Guys, this is a big one.

Speaker 2 (13:42):
It's a it's a top five matchup or top ten
at least Indiana Ohio State.

Speaker 3 (13:47):
Tom, you grew up and so do you, Jeff, following
the UK.

Speaker 2 (13:50):
Indiana football rivalry, which is no more played against him.

Speaker 5 (13:55):
You covered you.

Speaker 2 (13:56):
Called some of those games Kentucky Indiana, as did I.
You grew up in Ohio State fan because your dad
played there. So this is fascinating. Indiana's having a dream
season and still some non believers because the Hoosiers haven't played.

Speaker 3 (14:11):
Anybody in the top tier, the Big Ten.

Speaker 7 (14:14):
Now's their chance in Columbus, right, Yeah, So what happens,
oh I have to I would have to take Ohio State,
maybe by a couple of touchdowns.

Speaker 5 (14:24):
Yeah.

Speaker 4 (14:25):
I think that the line on this is like ten
or twelve.

Speaker 5 (14:27):
Yeah, and I would agree with that.

Speaker 6 (14:29):
I think this has been a dream season for Indiana,
but there's a difference in Look. Old Miss was a
really nice win, but Old Miss isn't beaten Georgia Ole
Miss in you know, I know, if you're Kentucky and
it's I'm trying to put that in Indiana. Indiana's won
some big games, but they haven't beat Ohio State. They
haven't beat Penn State. I don't they beat Michigan, but

(14:50):
I mean they didn't swinging last week.

Speaker 3 (14:52):
Yeah.

Speaker 6 (14:52):
So but I just think, I know, I Ohio State's
really good. Are they the best team Ohio State's had
in a long time? I don't think so. I think
there's a lot of holes on it, but I think
they they're big and strong enough to beat.

Speaker 7 (15:06):
It's been a great story of Yeah, great story, and
he's had a great year. Indiana having the kind of year.
Not teams that anybody's talked about for a long time
or we're talking about in August.

Speaker 6 (15:15):
Let me ask you to a question because you talked
about the big tail, but about the SEC ole Missus
got a huge game right there. I think they're Florida. Yep,
they have to win that game.

Speaker 5 (15:25):
Yep.

Speaker 6 (15:25):
If they win, how do you keep them out? If
Alabama wins out, how do you keep them out? If
if Georgia wins out, they've lost what four games and
three years?

Speaker 4 (15:37):
How do you keep them out?

Speaker 6 (15:38):
There could possibility of four SEC teams making the third
of the of the twelve.

Speaker 2 (15:44):
Which is why the SEC, at least the commissioner was
fully in favor.

Speaker 5 (15:48):
Of the playoffs. And what's going to be interesting.

Speaker 7 (15:50):
Let's say Ohio State beats Indiana by three touchdowns.

Speaker 4 (15:53):
Yeah, Indiana drops out? Do they drop completely out? Because
then I think Penn State would be the next.

Speaker 2 (16:01):
People wondering Oregon, people wondering about strength to schedule. We'll
see in that Indiana Ohio State game. They'll see, if
not this week next About Texas, there are some questions
about Texas, Uh, Notre Dame strength to schedules, not anything
to write home about.

Speaker 5 (16:18):
An army. An army this week, that'll be fun.

Speaker 7 (16:20):
One way Texas we were talking about, you know, looking
ahead to A and M. One thing that keeps the
Longhorns focused in the moment is if they were to
lose this game, they're they're going to the playoffs, right yeah.

Speaker 6 (16:32):
And if for Kentucky, if they lose this game, they're
not going to bowl, right exactly, So your bold streak
is on the line.

Speaker 7 (16:38):
Yeah, yeah, that's the thing, you know, if from Kentucky
or the Kentucky coaches I'm telling about. Guys, Look, you
started this season wanted to do things nobody had ever
done before. Right here, that's gone. But you can do
something nobody thinks you can do. You still do something
nobody thinks she can do, which is when these next.

Speaker 6 (16:53):
Two well when was the last time a Kentucky team
be two top five teams when they played them?

Speaker 5 (16:58):
To this would be the fourth Take me on the
top tree.

Speaker 2 (17:03):
All right, that's gonna do it for this edition of
the Wildcat Whip. John Lee chepicorl see you next week.
