Speaker 1 (00:00):
Yeah, you're spot on there, and you know, for me,
I think the greater talking point is the depth that
we spent this offseason talking about the Kentucky women's basketball
was going to have something that they did not have
the luxury of having last season. The depth clearly is
much improved. They can go deeper. You mentioned Asia Boon
and even KK Carroll. I'm sure we'll talk more about
her on future episodes, but Josie Gilvin as well. So

(00:24):
there's actually some pieces coming off the bench this year
that I think this fan base is going to be
really excited about. And I Am not going to be
surprised when we look at the end of the year
and we say that this was a better Kentucky basketball
team than they were in year one under Kenny Brooks.

Speaker 2 (00:39):
Yeah.

Speaker 3 (00:39):
KK Carrol the freshman coming off the bench, she said,
I'll shoot a three.

Speaker 4 (00:42):
She's got some swagger she does.

Speaker 2 (00:44):
I love the confidence, fearless, Fearless the freshman. Welcome into
episode three of the Kentucky Basketball Podcast, presented by UK
Federal Credit Union. I'm Michelle Kenesebeck and joined with me

(01:06):
this week. No a Frairie, no welcome back.

Speaker 4 (01:08):
Yeah, it's good to be back.

Speaker 1 (01:09):
I at this time last week did not have a voice,
so I appreciate Goose jumping in for me, and it
was a great episode.

Speaker 4 (01:16):
But excited to be back in this chair.

Speaker 2 (01:18):
And a lot has happened since we last saw you know.
I know, I've seen you at basketball games between the
last podcast you're on and now, and we have a
lot to recap. Both teams had their home openers this week.
Women's basketball beat Morehead State seventy five to fifty nine
for their home opener and historic Memorial Coliseum, and then
men's basketball played Nickels. They won seventy seven to fifty
one in their home opener in rupp Arena. I mean,

(01:40):
I feel like we should just dive into it. College
basketball around the country has been crazy, and it's been
great here in the Bluegrass.

Speaker 3 (01:46):
Four games this week.

Speaker 2 (01:47):
Yeah, it is a busy week.

Speaker 1 (01:49):
Noh, yeah, it has already been a busy week, and
still more games to go.

Speaker 4 (01:53):
But it's been fun.

Speaker 1 (01:54):
I found myself on you know, Monday and Tuesday of
this week just sitting there watching a lot of college
basketball and just appreciating the fact that college basketball is
back and it's the greatest time of the year.

Speaker 2 (02:07):
I joked on the podcast last week, I said, Big
Blue Nation, anybody who lives in Lexington, you have no
excuse to be bored this week because you had a
basketball game, women's basketball on Monday, men's bastball on Tuesday,
women's basketball on Thursday, men's basketball on Friday. There's a
volleyball game on Sunday, and then a football game on Saturday,
so quite literally, and.

Speaker 1 (02:26):
Men's soccer is going to be playing in the Sun
Belt Tournament here on campus after winning the regular season titles.
So it's a good time to be a Kentucky Wildcat
right now.

Speaker 2 (02:33):
I can't keep track of it all. This is why
we're partners in crime, all the brain space. Okay, let's
start with the women's basketball team. They beat more Head State.
You were on the call for SEC Network Initial Takeaways.

Speaker 1 (02:44):
Yeah, I mean it was a win. I think that
was the biggest takeaway. First games of the year are
so challenging, and Kenny Brooks mentioned that to us before
the game. He talked about it again in his postgame
press conference. Because the biggest challenge with a first game
you have no film on your opponents. Morehead State had
played a couple of close scrimmages. Kentucky women's basketball played

(03:07):
a close scrimmage, but you know, when you talk to
the coaching staff, they were literally scrounging Twitter and the
Internet trying to find clips of individual players and you know,
for Morehead State, and so you're putting together a game plan.
But then what you're not expecting is a player for
Morehead State who had never taken a career three. Suddenly

(03:27):
she's hitting threes over the reigning defensive player of the
year in the SEC.

Speaker 4 (03:31):
So it's so challenging.

Speaker 1 (03:33):
So I think the biggest takeaway is it's really good
just to get some film. I'm sure that Kentucky women's
basketball has used that film all week long. There was
a lot of areas that they can clean up. And
now you've got their next game coming up against Monmouth
and you know, some other big tests on the near horizon,
so you know, again it's a win, it's going to
be a work in progress. They touched a lot on

(03:55):
I think communication needs to improve for that team, but
there were some positives, but I also think there are
some areas that they can continue to grow.

Speaker 3 (04:03):
And when I spoke with Kenny Brooks at halftime of
the game. He mentioned some first game jitters.

Speaker 2 (04:08):
Right. As much as there is a lot of consistency
with this Kentucky women's basketball team coming back, there are
some new pieces. You talk so much about Tony Morgan
in the off season and how she is going to
be stepping into this role as the point guard and
a leader of this team. And Jordan ob yes, she
was on the team last year, but she was on
the bench because of an injury. She's going to be
a prominent player. She had a great home opener with

(04:30):
fifteen points and fifteen rebounds, a double double. And I
don't know if you saw this, but she lost her
contact like twice in the game. I don't know if
you got to ask her about that, but I wanted
to ask her and be like Jordan, I saw her
yelling at coach Peterson, like I lost my contact. I
lost my contact. I want to be like, so, what
is what's the eye contact prescription? How blind are we?
Because she played a decent amount in that first quarter

(04:51):
without a contact until they called time out. But I
think it was super exciting to finally see her be
able to be a prominent piece on this roster. So
she was one of my biggest takeaways was seeing Jordan Obie,
her ability to get to the paint and her ability
just in that two position to give some more size
to help Tony Morgan out there. And you know a

(05:12):
lot of attention on the triplets, right Tiani Key, Amelia Hassett,
Clara Strak, all three of them. Coach Brooks after the game,
you could tell he was disappointed in some areas. But
the women's team, unlike the men, they didn't have exhibition
games where you are playing in front of everybody and
getting that game like atmosphere, and when you're playing these

(05:32):
closed scrimmages then your first game, there are so many
moving parts, right, how do you get your game day
routine down? If you're a transfer, what does your game
day routine look like? How long does it take you
to feel comfortable? What time is shoot around at? All
of these changing factors that they didn't get to have
because they didn't have an exhibition game are things I
think also to just factor into that.

Speaker 3 (05:56):
And playing in front of a big crowd.

Speaker 2 (05:57):
I was really really excited about the crowd that they
got in their home opener.

Speaker 1 (06:01):
Eh yeah, I mean big Blue Nations showed up. I
think maybe the final attendance number, I don't exactly know
what it might actually be, you know, listed in the
in the box score, but I think it was just
over four thousand was probably in there.

Speaker 4 (06:12):
That was the ticket sold.

Speaker 1 (06:14):
So yeah, great clar Oud for that that home opener,
and I think you're spot on. I think that they're
definitely were some jitters early on in that game that
you know, did get cleaned up as the game went on,
and you know, coach Brooks has talked a lot about
the leadership that the triplets are going to need to provide.
I think I left that game wanting more from those
three in particular, and I think Tiani Key would be

(06:36):
the first to tell you that she did not have
her best performance. I don't even think Clara Strack would
say that she had a great performance. The stat line
says she did, but I think she would say that
there are a lot of areas that that she needed
to improve on. So I think the one caveat when
it comes to this game against Morehead State that Big
Blue Nations should be aware of is Kenny Brooks said

(06:57):
it in the postgame press conference. They're not going to
play a ton of teams like Morehead State this year,
and this roster is built to compete in the SEC,
they are not necessarily built to play against teams that
are going to play five out with guards ranging between
five foot eight and five foot nine that can chuck
a bunch of threes. So while I was really impressed

(07:18):
with Morehead State and give Ashtenfeldhause a ton of credit there,
I think as the season progresses, we're going to see
a much different Kentucky team against teams that maybe play
more stylistically similar to Kentucky. So that will be interesting
to keep an eye on as we progress. But like
you said, Jordanoby was a huge piece. I said in

(07:40):
our first episode that I think part of the reason
Kentucky found themselves ranked in the preseason where they did
was a lot of people had forgotten about Jordanoby, and
I feel like that take was paid off with fifteen
points and fifteen rebounds.

Speaker 3 (07:53):
Just so happy for her.

Speaker 2 (07:54):
I knew that last year anytime an athlete goes out
with an injury, but just seeing her on the sideline
last year, so happy that she finally got to put
that Kentucky jersey on and see her in the starting lineup.
You read my mind, because I had that same thought
about Kenny Brooks, that quote that he had in the
postgame press conference. One more thing before we move on
to the men's side of things, Asia Boon. She got
some reps at that point guard position. Kenny Brooks said,

(08:17):
you know, he was pretty happy with how she look.
Wants her to shoot more when she's at the two,
but she'll be somebody to look out to look out
for as well as that backup point guard if Tony
Morgan gets into foul trouble or anything throughout the season.
So she's also somebody that I've kind of got my
eye on just to see how she develops in that
role because it is a new role for her, and

(08:38):
playing a portant guard is significantly different than playing at
that two position, knowing how to run your offense look
at the floor. So excited to see how Asia Boon
grows into that role because it's something that's outside of
her comfort zone.

Speaker 1 (08:50):
Yeah, you're spot on there, and you know, for me,
I think the greater talking point is the depth that
we spent this offseason talking about the Kentucky women's basketball
was going to have something that they did not have
the luxury of having last season. The depth clearly is
much improved. They can go deeper. You mentioned Asia Boon
and even KK Carroll. I'm sure we'll talk more about
her on future episodes, but Josie Gilvin as well. So

(09:14):
there's actually some pieces coming off the bench this year
that I think this fan base is going to be
really excited about. And I am not going to be
surprised when we look at the end of the year
and we say that this was a better Kentucky basketball
team than they were in year one under Kenny Brooks.

Speaker 2 (09:29):
Yeah. KK Carrol, the freshman coming off the bench, she said,
I'll shoot a three.

Speaker 4 (09:33):
She's got some swagger she does.

Speaker 2 (09:35):
I love the confidence, fearless, fearless the freshman.

Speaker 3 (09:38):
All right.

Speaker 2 (09:38):
Switching over to the men's side of things, their home
opener against Nichols. They won seventy seven to fifty one. No,
you also were on the SEC Network broadcast for that
game as well. I feel like it is only right
if we start off with the Colin Chandler dunk no Prairie.

Speaker 1 (09:54):
Yeah, I mean there was only one place to start.
We had a chance to interview him postgame on the broadcast.
We made it about three questions into that interview before
we had to talk about what dum now calling the
dunk that's been seen around the world. He you know,
told us afterwards that he took that initial step around
that defender and he said, I knew what I was
doing at that point. And you know, obviously we all

(10:15):
remember the dunk that Colin Chandler had at Big Blue
Madness that you know, brought to everyone to their feet
the assist from John Wall, but this one has to
be at the top of his career list. I asked
him where he was hanging the poster, and I'm sure
it's going to go over the top of his bed,
because that was a special dunk and it came at
a great time because Kentucky had gotten off to a

(10:37):
great start in that second half. But that really ignited
the fan base in there that for a lot of
the night, let's be honest, had been waiting for something
to cheer for. They finally got it. And you know,
I think given Colin Chandler's story, those of us who
have been around the program are pretty excited to see
what he was able to accomplish in his first career start.

Speaker 2 (10:56):
I was standing behind that hoop and I was like,
oh no, oh no, and I saw his face and
I think there's a photo where my jaw is just
to the floor. All of the photos that the Kentucky
photography first off, shout out the photography team within UK
Athletics because the photos of the reactions of other teammates.
There's one of Brandon Garrison who's just like, oh my gosh,

(11:19):
I love seeing all those authentic moments. But bravo, Colin
Chandler Sports Center number one top ten. You're the number one,
So that was great to see from Colin Chandler. But
you know, looking at some of the other areas, having
Denzel Aberdeen back coming off the bench was massive for
this Kentucky team.

Speaker 3 (11:37):
You could just tell.

Speaker 2 (11:39):
How much their offense, how much more their offense looked
in sync when you had that true point guard in
Denzel out there. He ended the game. It was I
think he had ten five and six assists and zero turnovers.
So coach Mark Pope postgame said that's the first time
he's had over four assists.

Speaker 3 (11:58):
And no turnovers in his career.

Speaker 2 (12:00):
So having Denzel Aberdeen back was really big for this team.
And I feel like the fan base can take take
a breath because there were some point guard troubles last
year with injuries, and having Denzel Aberdeen back on the
back on the court was really big for Kentucky basketball.

Speaker 1 (12:14):
Yeah, I mean it definitely they settled down with Denzel
Aberdeen as the starting point guard in that that second half.
And it's worth mentioning that you know, when Denzel comes
in and plays that that that point position, what it
allows is it allows a guy like Colin Chandler to
go back to his natural position, which is a shooting guard,
and it allows a guy like otega Oway to slide

(12:34):
back to the three where he was so good last year.
So getting Aberdeen back was huge. I think you could
really see how much his absence loomed over the Georgetown loss.
I'm not going to sit here and say that that
game would have been completely different. Kentucky would have won
that game if Aberdeen had played, But I think the
mix of his playmaking and also his defense is something

(12:56):
worth talking about, and I think that should have Kentucky
fans even more excited about the prospects of Jalen Low
getting back, because now suddenly you have Low and Aberdeen
on the floor together alongside in o way alongside a
Diabate or a Yellovich and then you have Marino and
Garrison inside. So having those guys back, I think is huge.

(13:16):
And you know, again, much like we talked about for
the women, when you look at the men, the depth
that we have discussed at nauseum in the offseason was
on full display. They probably had to go a little
bit deeper than they wanted to early on in the
season due to injuries. Certainly we're hoping that the injury
bug goes away. It looks like Trent no was probably
going to be okay. So that was another thing that
came out of that game last night. But this is

(13:38):
a deep roster. They're still trying to figure things out offensively.
But Mark Pope mentioned it in the postgame press conference yesterday.
The one thing that stood out despite the shooting struggles
in the first half, they gave up just fifteen points, which,
if I remember right, was like one of the lowest
totals since like twenty nineteen.

Speaker 2 (13:55):
Yeah, and I think it was only thirteen was the lowest.

Speaker 4 (13:59):
I think it was eleven, Like we're right in that ballpark.
It's not many.

Speaker 1 (14:02):
So, you know, impressive defensive performance and that was something
that this team and this staff put a lot of
time and effort into this offseason improving and you know,
the metrics say that if you're a top twenty five
defensive unit, you have a chance to win a national championship.
Right now, Kentucky is a top twenty five defensive team.

Speaker 2 (14:21):
Yeah, Coach McLean has not been shy to say they
want to be a top ten defensive team in the country.
That's been such a point of emphasis this offseason, as
you've mentioned, Noah, and something else that Coach Pope mentioned
postgame was, of course, there weren't a lot of shots
falling in the first half, right you know, they were
shooting about thirty percent. That's unlike a team like this,
But coach postgame said, I'm not worried like they'll eventually fall.

(14:43):
Shooters keep shooting. But the fact that they were able
to not allow shooting mishaps to bleed into their defensive
effort or how they were performing on the defensive end
of things, I think that that was a bright spot
for me looking at this team, because it's really easy
to not make some shots and then get frustrated and
then not get back on the defensive side of things,

(15:04):
but they didn't allow their offensive struggles to bleed into
the defensive side of things. So you know, maybe you
were I think they ended up being one of seven
or one of nine from three heading into halftime, But
because you played so well defensively, you were able to
come back out in the second half and still feel
like you, no, no, we're in this game.

Speaker 3 (15:22):
We're winning.

Speaker 2 (15:23):
Yes, it's okay, we haven't shot well, but get back
out there.

Speaker 3 (15:26):
Shots start flowing.

Speaker 2 (15:27):
Colin Chandler, it hits a three early early in the
second half, and then your offense starts rolling. Denzel Aberdeen
gets back in there, and you have a little bit
more of a float of things.

Speaker 1 (15:35):
Yeah, you're spot on one hundred percent right there. I mean,
I think going into halftime the stat was dating back
to the second half of the Georgetown game, Kentucky was
two for their last twenty seven from downtown. But then
to your point, they start that second half and they
go five for their first five from the floor, and
then Colin Chandler starts hitting three point shots, and really
just everyone got going at that point, to the point

(15:57):
now where you look at the box score and you know,
twenty six percent from three isn't great, but a lion's
share of those came in the second half, a much
better shooting performance. So Kentucky's gonna be okay. Are they
going to be the same three point shooting team that
they were last year with guys like Jackson Robinson and
Kobe Brea. I think that's still TBD. But there's a
lot of talent on this roster, and I think once

(16:19):
you get all these pieces put back together and you
have healthy bodies out on the floor, I think we're
going to see the best version of Kentucky basketball and
particularly the offense in the future.

Speaker 3 (16:30):
Yeah, and a couple quick notes.

Speaker 2 (16:31):
Jalen Lowe, he's still kind we're kind of just still
watching to see what his status will be. So obviously
him coming in at that point guard position, and then
of course I don't want fans to forget about Jaden
Quaintan's his role whenever he does come back for this
Kentucky team is going to be prominent. He is such
a talented young player. I mean, he just turned eighteen.

(16:55):
I know everybody saw the videos of him doing his
driving test this summer. He's so young, played at Arizona
State last year and now coming in this year.

Speaker 3 (17:05):
So you only tour his acl around.

Speaker 2 (17:06):
February last year, so still still rehabbing that leg. But
obviously fans hopefully you know, you want him to recover.
But him coming back into the lineup too will be somebody,
somebody who fans I feel like, we'll forget about because
you'll get.

Speaker 3 (17:22):
Into the season.

Speaker 2 (17:23):
I mean, they play Louisville in a week and then
when he comes back, it's gonna be like, oh my gosh,
we have this other piece that.

Speaker 1 (17:29):
A top five potential NBA draft pick coming back.

Speaker 2 (17:33):
Yeah, so the significance of him, we fans, you cannot forget.

Speaker 3 (17:36):
We're gonna get into basketball season.

Speaker 2 (17:37):
You're like, things are rolling, things are rolling, and then
it's gonna be like, here's a Christmas gift. Here's a
Christmas gift. Here's another piece to the puzzle. A lot
of depth on both sides of things. So both teams,
they'll get back at it Thursday, Women against Monmouth and
Historic Memorial Coliseum and men men in Rapperina against Valpo.

(17:59):
We have a fun, a fun little thing that we're
gonna do in this podcast. But before we get to
the fantasy draft, all right, listen, everybody, we need to
take a brief moment to thank our podcast sponsor, uk
Federal Credit Union, as the official credit union of the
University of Kentucky. UKFCU understands that students need support and
that's why they've created the Student Rewards Account, which offers

(18:20):
them five percent cash back on all debit card purchases
to students aged thirteen to twenty five. Visit UKFCU dot
org or stop by one of their seven local branches
to open an account. Today, Federally insured by NCUA, got
a trivia question.

Speaker 1 (18:35):
Yeah, we started this back in episode one. Each one
of these episodes we're going to be bringing you a
trivia question. We're trying to theme them around, you know,
recent events or upcoming events in Kentucky basketball. So today's
trivia question is the Kentucky women's basketball team, as we mentioned,
scores a victory at home in the home opener versus

(18:57):
Morehead State. Since arriving at Kentucky. What is Kenny Brooks's
record in historic Memorial Coliseum and an important caveat We
are going to include the postseason, So that is our
trivia question for this episode. We're going to get to
our fantasy draft now. But before we get to the
end of this episode, we will give you that answer

(19:19):
to our trivia question. So that's our trivia question and
an excited for Big Blue Nation to come up with
the answer to that.

Speaker 3 (19:26):
Yes, you even stumped me.

Speaker 2 (19:28):
I'm not gonna give too much away.

Speaker 4 (19:30):
I think I've stumped you on both so far.

Speaker 2 (19:32):
Yeah, definitely the first one. I'm not very great at trivia,
but listen, we're working. By the end of the season,
I'm going to be like knowing all these trivia facts.

Speaker 4 (19:40):
So you're not the friend to take to trivia.

Speaker 2 (19:41):
I know. I'm a good hang though.

Speaker 4 (19:43):
Okay, that's fair. That is fair, all right.

Speaker 2 (19:46):
So now you teased it a little bit right there. Noah,
you brought this idea to me and I was like, absolutely,
we are doing a fantasy draft Kentucky men's basketball, Kentucky
women's basketball, and this is going to be a segment
that'll be able to carry us through the entire.

Speaker 3 (19:59):
Season and long.

Speaker 2 (20:00):
So give us a little rundown of how it's going
to go and then we'll get into the fantasy draft.

Speaker 1 (20:04):
Okay, So the rules for this draft are pretty simple.
We're each going to make ten selections. You have to
select five men and five women, and we are going
to be keeping track of the points throughout the season,
and as you mentioned, it'll be a nice running segment.
I'm sure there's weeks that my ten players are going
to do poorly, and I'm sure there's gonna be weeks

(20:25):
that your ten players probably do even worse. So it'll
be something to keep track of. And obviously injuries can
play a factor throughout the season. But I think it'll
be fun. So we'll do a quick snake draft. We've
got ten minutes allotted for this. Michelle, since you were
the host of this podcast a year ago, I am
going to give you the number one overall pick. There

(20:48):
is some pressure that comes with that. This is a
pick that you don't want to get wrong because I'm
picking the next two.

Speaker 3 (20:54):
I know there is a lot of pressure.

Speaker 2 (20:55):
I walked into the office and Noah looked at me
and he goes, Michelle, I'm giving you the number one
overall pick. And I'm like, oh my gosh, that's so
nice of you. And then I was like, wait, there's
a lot of pressure on this because then you pick
the next two. But I feel confident. I feel confident
in my I feel confident.

Speaker 3 (21:10):
My answer.

Speaker 2 (21:10):
As soon as you told me this, I was in
my head and I was.

Speaker 3 (21:12):
Like, I got this.

Speaker 2 (21:14):
With the number one overall pick, I select Otaga away, Okay, and.

Speaker 4 (21:21):
No, it's a it's a it's a good pick.

Speaker 1 (21:23):
Uh Obviously he has been picked to win the SEC
Player of the Year, he could be a contender for
National Player of the Year. So I have to admit
I figured you would go there. Uh So the strategy
of giving you the number one overall pick is paying off. Okay,
okay early on. But yeah, that's a that's a great
start to this draft.

Speaker 2 (21:44):
All right.

Speaker 4 (21:44):
No, uh, okay.

Speaker 1 (21:45):
So now I have the pressure of making uh two
picks in a row, and that can also present some challenges.
So I too, am going to to go on the
men's side, and uh, I want to get a point guard.
I think, you know, point guard's so important to running
a good basketball team. So I am taking Jalen Lowe

(22:05):
with the number two overall pick in our fantasy draft
for this episode.

Speaker 2 (22:11):
All right, listen, you can't go wrong with that, and
hopefully we see him on the court sooner rather than later.

Speaker 4 (22:17):
That's the hope, that's the bet. So taking Jalen Low
number two.

Speaker 1 (22:21):
And now, as we mentioned, we also have to we
have to have five women on our team. And so
this is where I think I can get some real
value right here. This player has already put up some
big time Fantasy points in the first game of the year.
So I am taking Clara Strack with my second pick,
number three overall in the first round.

Speaker 2 (22:40):
Well, that one hurt me. I was like, come on, no,
I'm just like thinking in my head, I'm like, surely
he won't play Clara Strack and I'll be able to
pick her. But all right, listen, that's fair, Okay. I
have a similar a similar mentality to you. I am
going to go with a point guard for my second
pick fourth overall.

Speaker 3 (23:01):
I'm going to go with Denzel Aberdeen.

Speaker 2 (23:04):
Got to see him in the Kentucky uniform this week,
and then I.

Speaker 3 (23:08):
Am gonna go.

Speaker 2 (23:08):
This one is tough for me. This one is this
one is really tough for me because I'm gonna go
on the women's side for this one, and I am
a little torn, but I'm gonna go with my gut.
And it's a player that we started off this episode
talking about. I'm gonna go Jordanobi.

Speaker 4 (23:24):
Okay, so that's a great pick. A little spoiler. That
was my next pick, So thank you for stealing that.

Speaker 3 (23:30):
So see you still there. See it all works out.

Speaker 1 (23:32):
That's that's what makes a fantasy draft fun, right, that's
u That's what we all get excited for.

Speaker 2 (23:38):
I'm just happy that we don't have to set lineups
because I'm I don't know about you, but I play
fantasy football and every single week I forget to start
my lineup.

Speaker 3 (23:46):
That's fair, and I leave like sixty points on the bench.

Speaker 1 (23:49):
So I completely understand there is a reason I stopped
playing fantasy sports years ago.

Speaker 4 (23:54):
But for this, uh, you know, we had to. We
had to take an opportunity.

Speaker 1 (23:58):
So okay, so we're four picks in first first two rounds,
now complete, and so I'll take my next two selections.
So I've taken a point guard with Jaylen Lowe, I
got my starting center.

Speaker 4 (24:10):
At this point. You took my pick, Jordan Obi.

Speaker 1 (24:13):
So I am going to go back to the men's
side here and make another selection, a guy that has
been stuffing the stat sheet already this season. I'm taking
Moda Bate to be my four in my my starting lineup.

Speaker 2 (24:29):
Motivation Motivational mo dia Bate. I love all of his
quotes that he does on on Mondays Motivational Model.

Speaker 3 (24:36):
Good pick.

Speaker 2 (24:36):
I mean, he is he has been a guy who
you just have've looked at in the exhibition games and
in this game, such a tough player that is always
going to get a rebound. He's always going to find
his way on the stat sheet.

Speaker 4 (24:48):
So we'll take him there.

Speaker 1 (24:50):
And I am going to go back to the women's
side here, and I've already taken one point guard, but
there isn't rules about where we're playing point guards. So
I'm taking Tony Morgan off the board here.

Speaker 2 (25:04):
I know you're doing that, you know, and that was
kind of my thought process. I feel like, whoever has
the next pick, like our thought process is pretty similar.

Speaker 3 (25:12):
Yeah, I kind of figured you were going to take
Tony Morgan there, But that's all right, it's all right.
I am going to go.

Speaker 2 (25:17):
Point guard as well. On the women's side of things,
I'm gonna go Asia. Boone talked about her a little bit.
She we're going to see her in that point guard
position a little bit when Tony Morgan is not on
the court, and then also in that.

Speaker 3 (25:30):
Two position in Big Blue Nation.

Speaker 2 (25:32):
You got to meet Asia Boone at the three point
shooting contest at Big Blue Madness. That girl can shoot
the basketball, so looking forward to seeing what she can do,
especially from behind the three point line this year.

Speaker 1 (25:42):
Now, well, I'm going to continue. I guess, do you
get another pick here?

Speaker 2 (25:46):
Nope, I do get another pick. I actually didn't think
I did. All right, Okay, so I've got just taking
a quick look because easy to like go through this
and then be like, Okay, who do I need to do.

Speaker 1 (25:55):
So you've got Oway and Aberdeen, You've got Obi, and
then you just took Asia Boon.

Speaker 2 (26:00):
All right, I'm going to go back to the men's
side of things.

Speaker 3 (26:06):
You know, I'm gonna go.

Speaker 2 (26:10):
And this is kind of just the first player who
early on we weren't sure how the freshmen were gonna
look just seeing them in a college game, but against Purdue,
I was I was impressed, and I've seen glimpses in
each of the next couple performances. I'm going to go
Jasper Johnson. Okay, Jasper Johnson, You're on my team. I

(26:37):
am really excited to see what Jasper Johnson can do
this year. He obviously had a lot of hype around
him coming to Kentucky overtime elite player, so I've I'm
excited to see what Jasper Johnson can do.

Speaker 1 (26:49):
Okay, well, that leaves me with some questions on direction
that I want to go at this point. I have
had an ace in my hole the entire time, and
I've been trying to decide how long I would let
this player slip because I really wanted this player, but
I also wanted good value on this player. Okay, I'm

(27:10):
taking Jane Quaintan's with my next pick. He's only going
to most likely play half a season, but I think
here at pick number ten, getting jayden Quainton's is some
incredible value.

Speaker 2 (27:22):
I told the fan base not to forget about him. Noah,
and I just forgot about him. You just said his
name and I was like, what am I doing?

Speaker 4 (27:30):
I mean that that was my plan all along.

Speaker 1 (27:32):
I've discussed draft strategy with multiple people, and my goal
was middle of this of this draft to try to
pick up Jaydan Quainton. So I'm going jayde Quainton's here,
and I'm going to go back to the women's side
at this point, and I think I can get some
more values. I'm just picking up size at this point,
So go ahead and give me ti Key.

Speaker 2 (27:51):
I knew it, I knew it all right. I'm gonna
go I need a little size on my team right now.
And I know that she plays the three, but we're
gonna go Amelia half.

Speaker 3 (28:00):
So all the triplets are off.

Speaker 2 (28:02):
The board right now. On the women's side of things,
you pick tianni Key, and then I'm gonna go, I
need a little size on.

Speaker 4 (28:11):
My each need two men and two women.

Speaker 2 (28:14):
Yeah, let's see, give me a give me a second.

Speaker 3 (28:18):
I'm gonna go. See. It gets really hard.

Speaker 2 (28:22):
It get once you get because I'm trying to look
at it from a I think you did a little
bit better at draft strategy. Let's see, I will go
with I'm gonna go we're talking freshmen. I'm gonna go
Malachim right now.

Speaker 1 (28:43):
Okay, so you'll have you need one more guy on
your roster, and you still have two women's picks.

Speaker 3 (28:51):
Yep, Okay, so now you're up.

Speaker 4 (28:53):
Okay.

Speaker 1 (28:53):
So I'm just gonna keep taking value because I think
there's a lot of value left on this board. I'm
going with a guy who I think could be this
one of the starters for this team, this Kentucky men's
team by the end of the year. Go ahead and
give me Andrea Yellovich for this next pick. So I'm
gonna take Yellovich. I need one more guy at this point,

(29:14):
but I'm going back to the women's side, and I'm
taking a player who I think Kentucky fans are gonna
love watching this year. She's gonna give me a ton
of value in terms of scoring points and getting steals.

Speaker 4 (29:28):
I'm going Joseph Gilvin.

Speaker 2 (29:31):
See, I'm starting to see where you're going with this. Okay,
So you need one one more guy, and I need
a guy and a girl. Okay, So I've got Otega Oway,
Denzil Aberdeen, Jordan Obi, Asia Boone, Jasper Johnson, Amelia Hassett,
Malachi Mareno.

Speaker 3 (29:48):
I'm gonna go.

Speaker 2 (29:49):
I'm gonna go on the men's side of things, I'm
gonna go Trent Nella.

Speaker 4 (29:51):
Okay, that's a good pick. I like that. That's a
great value pick.

Speaker 2 (29:56):
Trent Noah, and my last pick on the women's side
of thing, I am going to go.

Speaker 3 (30:03):
Listen, we're talking value. Are we talking value?

Speaker 4 (30:06):
I think we are?

Speaker 2 (30:06):
Are we talking value? We're talking with another freshman. I
got a young roster across the board. I'm going KK Carroll.
I talked about how she was fearless, and Kenny Brooks
has not been shy to say that that that she's
gonna play. He wants her in that rotation. So I'm
gonna go KK Carroll. A young team. But listen, young
is good. They've got the energy, they're excited. They haven't

(30:28):
been beaten down by.

Speaker 1 (30:29):
College yet, seem I'm looking at the board though, and
I think we may have missed a pick because I've
got myself down for four women and four men.

Speaker 4 (30:39):
So do I have two picks left? I got scroll up, okay,
so I need to.

Speaker 2 (30:44):
See you've got I'm sorry, you've got two, and then
I've got one more.

Speaker 1 (30:47):
Okay, So I've got two more picks here. So with
my last two picks in the inaugural fantasy draft of
the Kentucky Basketball Podcast, I'm going to select con Chandler
as my next pick after his performance on opening nights,
maybe a.

Speaker 4 (31:06):
Guy who could really play a role on this team.

Speaker 1 (31:08):
So that'll be the final men's piece for me. And
now I have to take one final piece on the
women's side, and for me, the choice is obvious. I've
been really high on Lexi Blue this year. I think
that she could step in and play a really nice
role for this team. So go ahead and give me
Lexi Blue as I round out my top ten picks

(31:30):
in the inaugural fantasy draft.

Speaker 3 (31:31):
Yep, good pick. Good pick. Lexi coming into her sophomore year.

Speaker 2 (31:35):
Of course, you know sad news with Dom going down
with the ACL, but you know people like her will
give her maybe more opportunity to see what she can
prove in her sophomore year at Kentucky. And with the
last pick, I am going with somebody on the men's side.

Speaker 1 (31:50):
So the problem is you do not have the remaining
men's player. You have five men already, okay, so you
have Oway, Aberdeen, John in Low, and Marino. So I
am going you have to pick between Gabby Brooks, Dominica Parova,
or else a bad force.

Speaker 3 (32:10):
I'm gonna go Gabby Brooks.

Speaker 4 (32:11):
Okay, Okay.

Speaker 2 (32:13):
To finish it out your inaugural Kentucky Basketball Podcast Fantasy.

Speaker 1 (32:17):
Drafts, I think at some point, and it's we're not
going to decide on this episode, but we have to
put something on the line this year, Like you and
I have to, you know, maybe a dinner at Carson's
or Malone's or something like that.

Speaker 3 (32:30):
But we know the things that make the big movie.

Speaker 1 (32:32):
Yeah, exactly, but maybe we'll go a little bit lower
than that. You and I will discuss off air. But
next episode, I think we'll come back and we're going
to have to decide what the loser of Fantasy Kentucky
Basketball is going to have to do this year.

Speaker 2 (32:45):
I think we should do. I do like a dinner.
I think we should do a dinner. But then I
also think we should do something funny that involves the podcast.

Speaker 4 (32:53):
I like that. I do like that.

Speaker 2 (32:55):
Okay, so we did the fantasy draft, so fun. Really
excited to have you all follow us along as we
track the numbers of these players and have our own
fantasy college basketball Kentucky college basketball season, and also the
trivia as you guys want to follow our trivia questions
each week, Noah, I will let you give everybody the
answer and we can chat a little bit about it.

Speaker 4 (33:15):
Yeah.

Speaker 1 (33:15):
So the answer was kind of a fun one if
you go back and look. Kentucky basketball went fifteen and
three in their first season playing at the renovated Historic
Memorial Coliseum. Also the first year for Kenny Brooks. They
have started this season one to zero. So the answer
is sixteen and three. And Michelle, I'll give you one opportunity,

(33:40):
maybe a couple.

Speaker 4 (33:41):
But who were those three losses? It all came in
year one?

Speaker 2 (33:45):
Yes, So when you first asked me this question, immediately
I was like, only one loss, and the LSU one
came to mind. That game stood out. Then you were like,
you're wrong, and then I was like, oh, wait, are
we including postseason where we are? Then Kansas State game
came to mind. So the second one and then the
third one really stumped me, so you had to tell

(34:06):
me the answer. Texas was the third one when Texas
came to town. Kentucky lost that game, but a very
very very strong start in his first first year, being
able to take care of home court advantage. But yeah,
that one, immediately I was like one game and then
the other two. The light bulb kind of went off
of like, oh yeah, I just put those in the

(34:27):
back of I don't like to think a lot about that.

Speaker 1 (34:29):
Yeah, I mean, we try not to think about losses
here in Lexington. We have not had a loss yet
in the twenty five to twenty six season, both teams
starting one to oher with a couple of games upcoming
this weekend.

Speaker 2 (34:39):
Yes it is, and looking forward to making those two
and oh by the time we're on here next week.
And another game that'll happen too will be Kentucky women's
basketball at Buffalo. It'll be kind of the Clarestrack hometown tour.
And then also Kentucky men's basketball at Louisville, which is
just crazy that they're both playing Louisville so early in
the season, both basketball teams before the football team even
plays a crazy so exciting college basketball is here. Before
