Now your host, Taron Hendrick, Welcome in everybody. It is
a brand new season of Clark's Pumpinshop BBN Radio. I'm
Darren Hendrick with you know. Over the next hour we've
got a lot to talk about as UK Athletics gets underway.
Women's soccer already four and zero on the season after
(01:16):
beating Detroit Mercy to Neil, and we've got volleyball coming
up this weekend. Obviously football kicks off this weekend as well,
so we'll talk with Logan Stenberg later on in the
show about the opening matchup with Toledo to twelve forty
five kickoff from Kroger Field and our airtime will be
ten forty five on the UK Sports Network. So a
lot of excitement right now around UK Athletics, including the
(01:39):
rifle team coming off a runner up finish in the
NCAA Championships at Historic Memorial Coliseum last year. We've got
Braden Peiser with us, a junior out of San Angelo, Texas,
and we'll talk to him about the rifle team and
what we can expect from that group coming up this season,
as well as his journey fantastic journey going across the
(01:59):
world with USA Shooting. So it's going to be a
fun conversation with Braden and like I say, Logan Stenberg
later on in the hour, stay tuned. This is Clark's
Popping Shop BBN Radio on the UK Sports Network. Welcome
(02:22):
back in to.
Speaker 3 (02:22):
Clark's Pupping Shop BBN Radio here on the UK Sports Network.
Speaker 1 (02:26):
Darren Headrick with you and I am joined by our
special guests to kick off the season. We've got Braden
Pizer with us from Kentucky Rifle He's a junior out
of San Angelo, Texas. Highly decorated as he comes to us.
He's been All GARC First Team. He's also a CRCA
All American First Team. So excited to have him with
us in studio and on the show tonight. Also a
(02:48):
world traveler representing USA Shooting. Braden, let's go back to
the start when you first found your passion for the sport.
I think you were around eight years old. What's the
journey been like for you since then?
Speaker 4 (03:02):
It's been a lot of fun. It's taking me a
lot of places. And you started small and never thought
that I would be sitting here. They got started in
four h and met a family the hemp Hills. Their
their daughter ended up shooting for USA Shooting and for
Texas Christian University. They said, Hey, you're doing good in
(03:24):
this four h thing. Why don't you continue on up
with this USA Shooting thing? And after a brief stint
in that, I was hooked.
Speaker 1 (03:32):
I was going to ask you what it was that
lured you into the sport and created where you found
your passion for it.
Speaker 4 (03:39):
Grew up shooting and hunting with my family and SAWID
four h had a rifle team that they had just started.
Figured I'd give that a try, and I enjoyed it,
so I stuck with it. It's really all it was,
was just just hunting and shooting with my family. They
got me started.
Speaker 1 (03:58):
Did you ever imagine and you jumped into the sport
that it would take you to some of the countries
you've been to and the places around the world.
Speaker 4 (04:05):
No, sir, I was hoping I could travel Texas for competitions,
much less to the world or United States.
Speaker 1 (04:14):
In terms of leaving Texas and coming to Kentucky, wat
stood out about the Wildcats? Why Kentucky?
Speaker 4 (04:23):
It just felt different visiting here on my visit, I
couldn't tell you a single thing that was better or
made it different. It just just had a feeling to
it that felt right, both with the team and with
the coaches.
Speaker 1 (04:38):
In terms of Harry Mullens, what was it like first
meeting him, getting to know him, and what's it like,
you know, competing for him?
Speaker 4 (04:48):
Well, I first met coach Mullens when I was twelve,
so I've we've been bumping into each other at matches
for a long time, so it was really cool to
to me. It seemed like he had been here forever
because he was He was there from when I was
twelve to when I was eighteen, And I mean he's
starting his thirty eighth year coaching here, so it really
(05:10):
wasn't that long a little bit that I knew or
knew of him. But it's been a great experience. You're
working with a coach that's been in the sport this long.
I've enjoyed every minute of it.
Speaker 1 (05:22):
So it sounds like there was the chemistry there from
the start between you two pretty.
Speaker 4 (05:26):
Much, Yes, sir, at least an interest.
Speaker 1 (05:28):
Yeah. Uh, we're chatting with Braden Peiser here on the
UK Sports network Clark's Pumping Shop BBN Radio and what
has been your favorite part of competing in the sport
of rifle since you jumped into it.
Speaker 4 (05:44):
I would say it's largely just how pure the competition is.
It's you don't have.
Speaker 1 (05:56):
Gosh, sorry, is it just that the the pressure of
the competition.
Speaker 4 (06:02):
I guess, uh, the pressure of the competition. It's just
it's it's a pure competition because there's you know, it's
it's you and the target. You don't have hardly any
other factors that play into it. You know, it's you
can always have a comparison, and even comparison from place
to place. Can't say well, it was the sun was
(06:23):
in my eyes in this place, or you know, well
they're you know, their guys were just bigger or faster.
It just it's just us in the target, no other
The other team's not playing an impact on our performance.
It should just compare our performances.
Speaker 1 (06:39):
Whether it's international or NCAA. How hard is it not
to Maybe I guess the term would be scoreboard watch,
maybe see your name up there where you're ranking during
a competition, and kind of knowing what you need or
don't need.
Speaker 4 (06:55):
I'm the worst about watching through throughout a match. Very
very very rarely do I not watch and guess Over time,
it just my curiosity drew me into it, end up
having to look at it, and I got used to it.
Now it's not not really an issue. But at first
it was. You know, I'd do math and think, oh,
I need need to average this score throughout the rest
(07:17):
of the match to end up in the place I want.
And now I can just just dance. It'll fix my curiosity,
but I can move on.
Speaker 1 (07:26):
I saw an interview you did right after you placed
bronze I believe this was in Peru, Peru, and the
guy was asking you about seeing your name up on
the scoreboard. But you couldn't see the scores. You could
just see the names and how they were rising and falling.
What did that factor add that you couldn't see what
the score was, you could just see the names moving
(07:47):
up and down. It was?
Speaker 4 (07:49):
It was stressful. I was, I was. Everybody's shuffling around
and bouncing, and then gets down to the last shot
and I know I'm in second, and then even knowing,
you know, knowing what uh what the person in front
of me, earth that the person in front of me
shot a good shot. After he shoots and the crowd cheers,
it's dang. He he didn't give me much room, didn't
(08:10):
give me any room to work with.
Speaker 1 (08:12):
Well, you and I have talked about the the pressure.
It's just you and the target. So that's the individual aspect,
but yet it's a team sport. Tell me a little
bit about that dynamic where it's individual performance, but it's
within a team sport. Uh.
Speaker 4 (08:27):
I think really where the team aspect of it comes
in is in the training. I mean work, you can't,
I mean you can There is a little communication if
you really want, But when you're you're on the line
on competition day, you know the your teammates can. They
can help you after the fact, but they can't always,
you know, help you out while you're in the moment,
(08:49):
but they can play a huge impact in the training
that prepared you to get to that moment. So that's
that's the part that I've enjoyed the most about Kentucky
is having that team around me to train with and
to work with and help each other improve.
Speaker 1 (09:02):
Chatting with Braden Peyser from Kentucky Rifle and I want
to ask you about this year's team and what excites
you most about the group. But first let's go back
to last year in the NCAA Championships. First of all,
performing and competing a historic Memorial Coliseum. What was that
like to have the Championships essentially on your home turf
in Lexington.
Speaker 4 (09:22):
It was an amazing experience. We started our first day
of practice, we walked into Memorial Coliseum and just kind
of got the opportunity to take it in and see
this is where the season's gonna end, and then carrying
that with us throughout the season and then getting to
end it there in Memorial was that was a really
cool experience. That's a it's a historic building and had
(09:45):
a great group of people, their competitors and crowd, and
of course my teammates. So that was definitely a special
moment I'll keep with me.
Speaker 1 (09:54):
And I imagine there was some added excitement too, just
because of the weight. Originally Kentucky was suppose to host
in twenty twenty, but because of COVID, those championships were canceled.
So here's five years later and the Cats are finally
able to host it. So I imagine there was some
extra excitement at finally seeing this event go off at
the Coliseum.
Speaker 4 (10:12):
Yes, there, it was special getting to finally follow through
with all that.
Speaker 1 (10:21):
In terms of the second showing what are some areas
that has motivated this team in the off season to
carry over this year and make up that little bit
of ground.
Speaker 4 (10:35):
I would say the end results were certainly from last
year were certainly motivating. We fell one point short at
the top of the podium, and I think all of
us know exactly where we had some places that we
could improve and knowing how bad we want it and
how close we were, that really is a factor that
(10:57):
can push us.
Speaker 1 (10:59):
We're chatting with Bread and Peyser here on Clark's Pumping
Shop BBN Radio. Will continue with him in a moment
on the UK Sports Network. Welcome back to Clark's Pumping
Shop BBN Radio. Here on the UK Sports Network. It
is week one of our show and we are with
Braden Pyser from Kentucky Rifle. They will open the season
(11:20):
October eleventh. That's a Saturday at Ohio State. In fact,
I believe the first four matches are on the road
this year. So, Braiden, we talked about last year finishing
runner up in the NCAA Championships. A lot of excitement
with you and several of the athletes back this year.
What excites you most though about this year's team.
Speaker 4 (11:40):
I think just having a fresh start is exciting. You
brought in some great freshmen and we have a lot
of great returners. I think it's really going to be
a special group.
Speaker 1 (11:50):
Tell me a little bit about the schedule and competing
in the GARC for fans that may not know some
of the teams that Kentucky Right competes with year in
and year out, because I know one of them is
West Virginia obviously, yes.
Speaker 4 (12:04):
Sir, so GARK is at least the way we see it,
and people can't have their opinions, but it's it's kind
of it's the sec of rifle. It's definitely at least
I would say it's the toughest conference there is and
it's but it's a fun conference compete with, get to
shoot against. You know, several Olympians. Got to compete against
(12:25):
two Olympic medalists in the last two years in the
in in GARK. That's really been been fun. It's been
a good push.
Speaker 1 (12:36):
Yeah, you also compete with that in this year you
travel to Navy and Army West Point. Always joke with
coach Bullens when we have him on the show. What
is it like though, competing against the military academies like
Navy and Army.
Speaker 4 (12:52):
It's fun. It's certainly interesting to see you see their
facilities and just the history of behind their campuses. But
they're their teams are they're well respected and they're they're
some of the best teams to be around and get
to to compete with.
Speaker 1 (13:08):
Yeah, we talked in the last segment about how you've
traveled the world with USA Shooting. First of all, what's
the honor like of being a part of Team USA
and USA shooting and representing your country.
Speaker 4 (13:24):
Uh, certainly a you know, I opportunity. I take a
lot of pride in being able to represent the US
to the best of my abilities is something I'll I'll
never take for granted and I've I've enjoyed every moment
of it, look forward to doing it even more.
Speaker 1 (13:40):
International competition versus competing in the NCAA, how is it
similar or different?
Speaker 4 (13:48):
Definitely similar in some aspects that a lot of the
top competitors in the international competitions are are in the
coll In the collegiate matches, we have two internationals on
our team. One is Olympic Sophia. She's an Olympian for
the Italian national team. And several other teams across the
(14:10):
country and in guard conference have have Olympians or have
had Olympians on their team that I've gotten to compete
with or or competitors on the other international matches. So
it's definitely definitely seeing some familiar faces.
Speaker 1 (14:23):
There is there any friendly banter going back and forth
about competing against each other.
Speaker 4 (14:29):
Always, it's it's a great group of competitors where you
can you can be friends, and then you know you
want nothing more to beat each other when you're on
the line, and then go have dinner together afterwards. It's
a definitely a unique, unique community, and that's in that aspect.
Speaker 1 (14:48):
How are the challenges of competing internationally? How do they
help prepare you for competing in the NCAA Championships.
Speaker 4 (14:56):
NCAAA Championships is a lot of people will say it's
one of the hot one of, if not the highest
stress matches. So going to the international matches and getting
the opportunity to be in those places where you have
the toughest competitors and you have the most stress and
the place where you want you want want success the most.
(15:21):
That's about the only way I see that you can
create a similar atmosphere to what n C double a's is.
Speaker 1 (15:28):
We've talked a little bit about the pressures and all
of that, but yet here you are very accomplished. You've
put up some amazing scores, you've meddled, you've podiumed. How
have you learned to conquer nerves? And is that something
that's always an ongoing battle.
Speaker 4 (15:45):
It's definitely an ongoing battle and something that no matter
how good you get at it, you. I don't think
anyone can ever say they're perfect at it. Even the
people are the most dominant in the sport still gets
to them at times. But trying to work through it
is some it's just trial and error. Some of it's
trying to read sports psych books and have an understanding
(16:07):
of it. Talk to sports psychs and try to learn
before you have to make the mistakes. Yeah, but really
learning through error is or just just through trials and
seeing what works what doesn't is about the only way
I've seen that's the most successful.
Speaker 1 (16:27):
But I would imagine that's whe're having the team aspect
of it's a big help because there's your support system,
teammates and coaches.
Speaker 4 (16:32):
Yes, get to bounce ideas off each other, talk about
what we've seen that works and what doesn't, and sometimes
just clear your mind before can be very helpful. You're
not doing anything special in the moment, but just talk
and clear your head before you go in.
Speaker 1 (16:49):
For folks who have not been to a rifle match,
you have small board air rifle, and then your your
overall score. Tell me the differences in the small board
air rifles, the different challenges that come with both.
Speaker 4 (17:03):
Yes, sir, so air rifles a sixty shot match or
both of them are sixty shot match, but air rifles
sixty shots standing match. The challenge with that is trying
to maintain consistency across sixty shots in one position. You're
not not having to break it up, and it's different,
completely different disciplines, so trying to maintain that focus is
(17:26):
can be very difficult. Sure, whereas small boar it's three position,
so we shoot sixty shots broken into standing, kneeling, and prone.
It's a twenty shots per position. You can it's much
easier to keep that focus for the twenty and break
it up, but it's much harder to to me, it
seems to be much harder to work on the technical
(17:47):
the physical aspects of it because you have to master
try to master three different positions, whereas air rifle you'll
have to work on one.
Speaker 1 (17:56):
Got a few minutes left with bradon Peiser here on
Clark's Puffins Shot BBN Radio real quick. I just wanted
to touch on all of your international travels because you've
been able to go all over the world essentially from
Cairo to Peru, and you told me Munich and some
other places. Is there a stop though, that's been the
most memorable on your journey.
Speaker 4 (18:18):
I would say two stand out to me. One would
be Junior World Championships in Peru this past October. That
was that match felt special before I got there, just
I felt really well, really well prepared for it and
the results showed. So that was a very very fun
(18:38):
moment for fun time to feel prepared and then be
able to follow through with that type of success. But
then also the summer getting shooting Munich was a great experience.
That was it was only my second Open World Cup.
That just something about the place, about the people, about
the range that was those are really great match. Just
(19:01):
no specific thing, just the overall experience was yeah, very fun.
Speaker 1 (19:07):
I imagine seeing the different cultures and everything has been
pretty awesome too. Braden. We appreciate you for joining us
man great stuff and we look forward to following the
riffle team when you guys get going in October.
Speaker 4 (19:17):
Yes, sir, thank you.
Speaker 1 (19:18):
It's Braden Pizer Junior out of San Angelo, Texas with
Kentucky Rifle. We'll continue with more Clark's Pumping Shop BBN
Radio as we'll chat with Logan Stenberg on the other side.
This is the UK Sports Network. Well, it is finally
football time into Bluegrass as we welcome you back to
Clark's Pumping Shop BBN Radio Saturday's game against Kentucky and
(19:40):
Toledo presented by Kroger, and it's time to chat about
the Cats as they get ready to open the season
with the Rockets. We've got Logan Stenberg with US All
SEC former NFL Second Team All American now UK Sports
analyst and Logan Obviously, the excitement is there, and I
imagine for you, is that itch come back this time
(20:01):
of year, Darren.
Speaker 3 (20:02):
I'll be honest with you, it does, especially when this
weather's getting a little cool. You know, you got to
you see the things in the media about the team
building in certain areas, you know, it just gets me
juiced up ready to see what they put together. And
there's a lot of hard work and time that they
put in during camp and I'm excited to see him
put down the field.
Speaker 1 (20:17):
A lot of new faces on this year's team. Coach
Stops and his staff went out and did an entire
roster overhaul, starting with the offensive line. They've got new receivers,
new quarterback, a lot of new faces on the defensive
side of the football as well. When you have had
a chance to see this team preseason, what excites you
most about the group.
Speaker 3 (20:36):
I'll be completely honest with you. I think Bush Hampden
is really going to kind of set into his own
offense this year, rely on that run game, and I
think that's what Stups really wants to push as well.
It's run first, run heavy, and then we'll go and
we'll get the receivers involved, and we need to push
it downfield. But we got to make them respect our
offensive line, respect the run game, load the box, and
then we can start picking them apart from the outside.
Speaker 1 (20:56):
Well, the offensive line was one of the focuses of
the staff. Heavily invested in a retooled, rebuilt O line
this year. But there's a couple of returning faces and
Jagger Burton and Jalen Farmer. And Farmer is a name
that I even heard Tom Leach on his radio show
this morning talk about a guy that has really stood
out in camp. Jalen Farmers.
Speaker 3 (21:15):
That guy when you see him out on the field,
he has put the work in the offseason. He's changed
his body around. Last year he was a little heavy.
I think this year he's trimmed up. He's still coming
in at that three hundred and twenty pound mark, which
is where you want to be as an interior offensive lineman,
but he's changed it up, he's put some muscle on.
He's awesome fat. I'm excited to see what he does.
And I personally like him because I think he's got
a little bit of that edge to him. He wants
(21:35):
to finish people, he wants to go the extra mile
to get that pancake.
Speaker 1 (21:39):
So I'm excited to see what he does well. Certainly
from a physical standpoint, you look across the line with
the new additions and the depth that they've created. On average,
you see sixty seven six' eight sixty, six the weight
three point fifteen or whatever it. Is but more than
just the, physicality there's a lot of experience on this line,
too a.
Speaker 3 (21:58):
Lot of, experience and you, know size is a premium
in THE. Sec you can't win games if you're just
smaller than the other. Team So i'm glad to see
if the coaching staff is really invested in that offensive.
Line and like you, said you, know we've got left
tackle with shiots at six foot, eight three twenty and
you can go down the list sixty, five sixty, four sixty,
sixty sixty. Seven but going back to what you originally,
said a lot of grad transfers in, here we've got
(22:18):
a guy at right, Tackle Alex WARSCHLAGER i believe is
the correct pronunciation for that grad student From Bowling Grain,
state coming in with a lot of, experience a lot
of snaps under his. Belt i'm excited to see what
he does in THE. SEC i think the first two
games are going to be a little bit of a learning,
experience But i'm excited for. That and then you talk about,
experience we got the right, Guard Josh, braun number seventy,
(22:39):
five The Arkansas florida. Transfer, he's you, know twenty nine
years old playing, football still not, really but you, know
he comes in with a lot of, experience and he's
kind of the vocal leader on that offensive, line is
What i'm. Hearing So i'm really excited to see what he.
DOES i think that that's going to take a little
bit off At jagger's played as.
Speaker 1 (22:56):
WELL i think that the.
Speaker 3 (22:57):
Offensive coaches are really pushing him to be a vocal
leader in that, room AND i don't know if that
really came natural to, him and it seems to come
natural to Bron So i'm excited to see him maybe
take those reins, over take that off Of jagger's plate
to where he can kind of play freely and.
Speaker 1 (23:11):
Fast AND i know Coach stoops wants to get back
to what helped build this program, up and that's running the,
football being. Physical when you look at this offensive, line
rebuilding the Big Blue, wall that was the huge key
this offseason why they put so much investment in.
Speaker 3 (23:25):
It, yeah you, know And kentucky fans love talking about
The Big Blue, wall and PERSONALLY i love it, because you,
know it makes me feel. Good but it's all about
being able to play with guys and knowing what they're
going to do before they do. It and SO i
think the biggest thing across college football as a. Whole you,
know we've got sixty new guys coming into campus this,
year whether they're freshmen or. Transfers that's EVERY sec team
(23:46):
in the. Country SO i think the quicker we can
kind of turn into one unit and play, together that
is when we're going to see results on the.
Speaker 1 (23:56):
Field, Yeah i'm glad you brought that. Up that was
going to be my next point about that, cohesion because
it's one thing to bring in the, talent but you
guys have to be one unit, right one mind out.
There and you look at the early schedule with a
Tough toledo team coming in here receiving votes in the
top twenty five And Old miss next, week it's got
to start.
Speaker 3 (24:12):
Quick it has to start. Quick we don't really get
that buffer like we would. Like we'd like to have
That Eastern michigan at the beginning of the, season But
toledo's coming in with a lot of guys that have
played a lot OF sec ball Acc big. Ten those
guys have transferred over To. Toledo they've got chipped FROM,
us so they've got guys that know how to play.
Football So i'm excited to see how our squad matches
up against. Theirs we can't take this one. Lightly we
(24:34):
got to go, out we got to start, fast and
we got to hit them.
Speaker 1 (24:36):
Hard and in terms of the depth of the offensive,
line when you go through the riggers of THE, sec
bumps and bruises. Happen maybe guys have to maybe not
so much miss, games but miss a snapper two here,
there or maybe a. Drive kentucky likes the way they've
rebuilt the depth on the line.
Speaker 3 (24:49):
Too right, COMPLETELY i think we have a lot of
experience behind that sixth seventh guy coming, in and as
far as the depth, GOES i think that the one
standout that six man is gonna Be Malchi, wood especially
determining how our right tackle And Alix schwarzelagger kind of
pans out this. Year malchi can play right tackle and
left tackle, both so if She yatts has a, break
So i'm really excited to see what he does in
(25:10):
kind of building into a grown, man a grown football.
Player he looked a little young last, year and that'll
come with time and time in the weight room.
Speaker 1 (25:18):
Especially, yeah so a lot of excitement around the offensive.
Line that's been one of the keys because you go
back and look at some of the struggles the offense
had last year AND i Heard Van hiles talk about
it as well this. Morning it really started around so
many third and longs last year and that would stall their,
drives as you might, expect and so that's one. Thing
(25:38):
if you can run the, football especially in this, league
and avoid stay ahead of the chains and avoid those
long third, downs it completely changes what you can do
as a play caller and an offense.
Speaker 3 (25:47):
Completely AND i don't think that that's all on the offensive.
LINE i think that we need to start utilizing Our oh,
YEAH i, wasn't, yeah BUT i think we need to
start utilizing the tight ends as. Well you look across
the league at some of the best teams in the
conference utilizing these tight ends or putting these tight ends
into THE. Nfl we've got such a deep room now
with a new coach as. WELL i think these guys
are coached up very. WELL i think they understand what
(26:10):
the mission. Is they're working together as. Well i'm really
excited About Henry boyer on those short third and short
situations like you're talking. About he's a big, body six,
six two sixty five From. Illinois this guy's gonna come
in in twelve personnel and short down yardage and really
make a difference.
Speaker 1 (26:26):
New running backs this. Year mcgawan and Dow. DELL i
know there's the coaches are going to rely on those
guys to pound the, football And Mark stoops, says those
are our.
Speaker 3 (26:33):
Guys and so, Yeah Dante, Downdell i'm really excited about.
Him he's the kind of the big back the short yardage,
guy kind of The Benny snell type that we've had
in the. Past and then to compliment that we've Got
seth McGowan number, three and we talk about. Experience these
guys both have played. Football we got a New Mexico
state transfer and then A Nebraska oregon. Guy So i'm
(26:54):
excited that it's not going to be a stage it's
too big for. Them they've already played this. Game they
know the caliber of foot ball they're stepping. Into they're
just going to go out, there play fast and not
have to think about it and just.
Speaker 1 (27:04):
Score wide receiver. Room, obviously Getting Jimori macklin back and
the new additions they've, got they can go eight deep
in this, room But macklin leading the charge and then
the guys they've brought, in this could be a very
dynamic wide receiver.
Speaker 3 (27:19):
Group all we've heard coming out of camp is run heavy,
Offense let's run the, ball let's run the. Ball but
arguably this is the best wide receiver room we've had
in five. Years SO i find it really hard to
believe that we're not going to utilize that and we're
not going to spread that offense out and hit them
on the. Corners i'm really excited About Kendrick law number,
one That alabama. Transfer he's going to have a lot
(27:41):
of kickoff responsibilities as well as the pump. Return that's
kind of where he shined At. Alabama didn't get the
reps on the outside that he wanted, to but as a,
returner he showed bright. Flashes So i'm excited to see
what he does when he gets the ball in his.
Hand AND i think that guys are going to be
really excited About Troy, stilado That clemson, transfer playing in
the slot. Position he's going to be the extremely fast and.
(28:02):
Quick he's gonna run great. Routes he's gonna have good.
Hands he's not gonna be the fastest guy or the
strongest guy out, there but when you need third and,
six third and seven a little too far to run the,
ball he's gonna be the.
Speaker 1 (28:12):
TARGET i. Think for complete coverage of The, cats LIKE

hear him this week and as part of Our Jack
Burford Chevrolet countdown To. Kickoff coverage Of kentucky And toledo
begins at ten thirty to twelve forty five kickoff At Kroger,
(29:17):
field but our coverage will begin at ten. Thirty Jeff,
Picoro Dick gabriel And Tom leach will have all the
action from Inside Croger. Field The rockets come to town against
The cats on THE Uk Sports network and we talked
a little bit About. Toledo they're receiving votes in the
top twenty, five so a sneaky tough opener for The
wildcats this, year and obviously their personnel has changed like
(29:41):
a lot of teams in THE, sec but you look
back last, year one of the things they did well
is run the. Football so if You're kentucky's, defense you
got old Missing week Two, toledo a team that can
run the, football got to shore up that. Part that's
going to be one of the critical aspects for this
defense to start off the.
Speaker 3 (29:56):
Season and that's the biggest question mark for me going
into this season is howard defense is going to, respond
and especially the front, seven that defensive, line those linebackers
at that. CORE i, Still i'll be completely honest with,
YOU i don't know who's Starting week.
Speaker 1 (30:07):
One i've been at.
Speaker 3 (30:08):
Practice i've seen a lot of guys rolling in and,
out a lot of flashes for some good, guys and
a lot of times where you're.
Speaker 1 (30:14):
Like well that gap was left.
Speaker 3 (30:15):
Open so that's WHERE i think we're going to have
the biggest problem this year is on the defensive line and.
Linebackers and NOW i would love to be surprised and
wrong as we go into the sixth seventh game of the,
year but especially going Into week one Versus toledo With Tucker.
Gleason he is a quarterback who has seen it, all
has a very strong, arm knows how to command this
offense through for twenty eight hundred yards last year and
(30:36):
twenty four touchdowns as well as a dual threat. Guy
he likes a tucket and run it three hundred and
sixty four rushing yards last. Year so it's not going
to be paying your ears back rush the. Quarterback it's
going to be a lot of. Contained you're going to
see these edge guys really staining their gap making sure
that he's not tucking the ball and. Running so there's
not going to be as many sacks unless those interior
(30:56):
d line and can really make a mark for themselves
and get back To tucker the.
Speaker 1 (31:00):
Year i've Heard Coach white and a few others talk
about this. Defense there's not that maybe superstar name like
A Josh, pascal but it's a unit they feel like
as a. GROUP a lot of times when you have
a group of guys where there's not really one or
two names that stick, out those units can be the
toughest because they're playing.
Speaker 3 (31:18):
Together they can be some of the best because you
don't have Them Ma donna on that, side you don't
have a guy that needs a, spotlight and.
Speaker 1 (31:24):
That's what mark you.
Speaker 3 (31:25):
Know he prides himself on the defense the secondary AND
i talked to him a couple weeks, back and of
course he's a he's a defensive.
Speaker 1 (31:30):
Guy he's not gonna talk.
Speaker 3 (31:31):
Bad about, him but he was extremely excited about this.
Crew he thinks that they're playing really well. Together he
thinks that they're they have really good cohesion and that
they understand the job and they're not. Selfish it's easy
to be selfish on. Defense seaball hit, ball but there's
a lot that goes Into you got to open it
up for your friend to get that sack.
Speaker 1 (31:48):
Sometimes Humphrey grace is a guy that Coach Brad white
has bragged. About he even compared him a little bit
To Josh pascal in the potential that he. Carries and
so the defense going to be something to. Watch early
on last, YEAR i thought they were. Solid they've always
been a tough defense Under Brad. WHITE i thought they
were solid at. Times last year they just had their
(32:10):
backs to the wall there a few times on the
field a little too. Much but that's the one question
is can they be good again this? YEAR i think
they have some.
Speaker 3 (32:18):
PIECES i think the biggest help that they're going to
get this year is in. Offense that's going to slow
down the. Game run the, ball keep them off the.
Field we can't have them on the field for ten
twelve minutes a. QUARTER i mean that you're not going
to win the game that. Way So i'm excited to
see them sit down and take a breather and let
the offense do their, thing going get a three and
out and rinse and. REPEAT i don't know how we've
(32:39):
Kept Brad white this. LONG i, mean he's one of
the best coaches in THE. SEC i don't know why
he hasn't left to gone take a head coaching job.
Somewhere he's definitely had the, offers so we need to
count our blessings as long as we have.
Speaker 1 (32:51):
Him in terms of, preseason having a chance to see
this team and going and talking to, coaches especially in
this new era of college athletics where you're going to see,
turnover a lot of, transfers a lot of new faces
from season to. Season reps in the off season were
always important because there's only so many times you get
(33:12):
to run a play or see a, play BUT i
imagine now they're, vital especially when you're trying to build
that cohesion with a new. Unit it's. PARAMOUNT i mean it.
Speaker 3 (33:20):
Is you're gonna probably get three fourth year snaps in
the film, room you're gonna get a fourth out on the,
field and then half of those are gonna be walked.
Through so being able to be a student in the,
game sitting in that meeting, room being able to see
what the coach is trying to get across to, you
being able to take that in and relay it on the, field.
Speaker 1 (33:38):
That's gonna be.
Speaker 3 (33:38):
Paramount you, know we talked about cohesion within these position.
Speaker 1 (33:42):
GROUPS i liked WHAT i.
Speaker 3 (33:44):
Saw what was it two weeks ago When stoops took
them to Water park or wherever they. Were you know
a lot of people will kind of snicker at that and,
say why are they wasting this? Time they need to
be on the field practice and blah blah. Blah that's
going to be the most important thing to help them
play as a unit this, year AND i Think stukes understands,
that especially in this new college football era that we're going,
(34:04):
into there's going to be fifty or sixty new guys each.
Year getting those guys on the same page as quickly
as possible and getting some work, done that's going to
be the difference between a six and six season or
making a playoff, runt.
Speaker 1 (34:16):
And on the other side of that, coin where it's
created a lot of question marks going into a. Season
kentucky's not the only team in the league doing. That
tennessee's breaking in a brand new, Quarterback they've got changes
along the offensive. Line Old miss doesn't Have Jackson dart
running things behind center. Anymore you go down the list
and every Team georgia is going to have a new
quarterback this. Year So kentucky's not the only. Team it's
(34:38):
just going to be interesting to see who gets off
to that fast start and who jaels the. Fastest of,
COURSE i think you hit the nail right on the.
Speaker 3 (34:44):
Head every team in THE sec is doing the Same
they're talking about the same thing we're talking about right,
now and SO i think it really just comes down
to who can get on the same page the. Quickest
AND i think that you're going to see that these
offenses and these defenses are going to go back to
a more elementary style, scheme especially early in the, season
and then growing on that as the season, goes adding
a player to, here wrinkled there to where, it you,
(35:07):
know put a little window dressing on. It it looks completely,
different but at the end of the, day it's just
it's wide zone or tight zone or or your cover.
Four SO i think that's going to be kind of removing.
Speaker 1 (35:16):
In terms of let's go back to the offensive line
for a. Minute i'd love to ask you about, this
and maybe this is a little two in the, weeds
but how has the offensive Lineman how has the challenge
evolved for an offensive line with the current, Defenses because
defenses have evolved to meet the spreads and things like,
That so you're seeing a lot more three fours versus
(35:37):
a four to three where you just line up and playoff.
Tackle things are so much different, now and you've got
to identify these, blitzers especially when it looks like a
five man front and all of a sudden it may
go to a three or.
Speaker 3 (35:46):
Four personnel is the number one thing they're gonna be
doing that today we're recording On. Monday they're gonna go
over personnel and they're going to know the numbers of
who are the down, linemen who are the linebackers to
make that iding a little bit. Easier, SURE i tell
you right, NOW i wouldn't want to be a tackle
in this, league those defensive ends and outside linebackers are
two fifty two sixty running four. SIXES i, mean that's
(36:07):
just way more athletic THAN i could ever. Handle but
that's the way the game's. Going And i'm glad that
we have a left tackle In Shots pete with six' eight.
THREE twenty, i mean he could touch each side of
the wall. RIGHT now i think he's got an eight
foot wing span and that's going, to uh he's going
to need to use every bit of that, this year especially.
Speaker 1 (36:23):
When guys are trying to hit the edge. On, him
yeah you talk about that. Wing span I've Heard jeff
bikoro talking, about that and, he's like imagine snap of
the ball and he all he has to do is
hold out his arms and he takes. Up room you
got to go.
Speaker 3 (36:36):
Around him and the most elementary offensive line play that
we can. Put, it yes he could just hold his
arms out and that's going to be at least a
second that he's got to go, around.
Speaker 1 (36:45):
Him and that second could be the.
Speaker 3 (36:46):
Difference exactly and so only imagine if he uses them
and starts to punch people and lock, them up how
good he.
Speaker 1 (36:53):
Can be we've, Talked offense we've, talked defense. Special teams
got a new punter, this year everybody's talking. About him
so you look at this team a lot. Of news,
but man it's just exciting to know that football season
is back and we haven't even really touched on. THE
quarterback i know there's been a lot of Talk About
cutter bowley and how. He's looked But Does zach calzada
(37:14):
with some sec experience ready to take.
Speaker 3 (37:16):
The, Ring yeah kalzata comes in with a heck of
a lot, of experience a super, strong arm and a.
Speaker 1 (37:21):
Quick.
Speaker 3 (37:22):
RELEASE man i was watching him throw the ball the.
Other day he is physically gifted. Beyond COMPARE so i
think that if he can kind of sink into, this
offense take a, bite off and really make it, his
own it's going to be a. Good, SEASON now i
don't want to Forget. ABOUT cutter I think cutter may
Have a he may have a time this year in,
this offense especially if we go through injuries or, you
know let's knock on wood. For That but i've heard
(37:45):
for two years Now That cutter bowley is the Future of.
Kentucky FOOTBALL and i. Don't know mark is, a LIAR
so i still. Believe HIM so i would be fully
expected To see cutter come into that role next year
and it really be. HIS team i think he's still,
just young he's. Still learning they don't want to put
him in a position to get them in trouble or
to really kill, his confidence because that's what at the
(38:05):
end of. The day quarterback plays.
Speaker 4 (38:07):
All.
Speaker 3 (38:07):
About confidence you've got to be able to let that
thing rip and not care if it's picked or if it's.
A touchdown when you start thinking, too much that's when bad.
Things Happen so i'm excited for his growth as a
player this year as well.
Speaker 1 (38:17):
Going into the game this week And. Against toledo as
we wrap up the show for, this week we talked
about the Challenges the rockets present other than a, win
logan what would you like to see From this kentucky
Group in?
Speaker 3 (38:29):
WEEK one i just want to see minimal mental errors.
Out there it's, game one it's week when we saw
it last week and week zero with the Turnovers, in
ireland is that where? They WERE so i would just
like to minimize. THE turnovers, i mean if we're getting
into the nitty, AND gritty i think we need an
average four and a half of carry all. Year long
if you, do that we're gonna play. Championship football get
off the field on third. And LONGS and i Think
(38:51):
that i'm just excited to see. WHAT happens i think
that this is going to be a closer game than. People,
realize obviously you've seen the lines open up this week
and may be A TOUCH so.
Speaker 1 (39:02):
I think we're some surprising people. This, Year yeah i'm
looking forward. To, it man it's exciting this time. OF
year i know it always has been for you and
that its is, still there, but man we're ready to get.
It going thanks so much for being with us and
look forward to hearing You and christy and the Gang. On,
