Welcome back to BBN Radio presented by Clark's Puppins Shop.
The Kentucky volleyball team coming off that huge win over
penn State, the defending national champions, and a three set
sweep of New Hampshire while they were up there in Pennsylvania,
and to talk about that plus what's going on at
looking forward. They've got a big match this week as well.
(05:43):
We've got Molly Tezza with us from Kentucky Volleyball. She's
the junior libero out of.
Speaker 3 (05:48):
The Woodlands, Texas and Molly, first of all, congratulations to
you and the team. Want a tremendous weekend for you.
Speaker 14 (05:53):
Thank you. It's very good weekend and we were excited.
Speaker 5 (05:57):
What was a key to going into rec Hall, notoriously
a tough place to play and not only beating Penn
State but coming away with a three set sweep of
the Nitney Lions.
Speaker 15 (06:08):
Yeah, we knew it was a tough environment, tough game
to play, so we in practice all week we had
you know, music playing loud, crowds playing loud on the
big jumbo tron, so we're getting ourselves prepared for the
big crowd that we had ahead, and I think we
just went in wanted to show everyone that was there
what Kentucky or Kentucky volleyball is all about, and just
(06:29):
nothing to lose.
Speaker 14 (06:30):
It went all out.
Speaker 5 (06:31):
Floor defense was tremendous, held Penn State to two forty
hitting for the match. What was the key to defense
against the Niitney Lions attack.
Speaker 15 (06:41):
We watched a lot of film about their attackers and
their tendencies and what they do, so it's really just
trusting our read and what we know about them and
keeping every ball off the ground.
Speaker 5 (06:52):
You already had the matchup against Nebraska and you were
so close to getting that one home. What were kind
of or what were so some of the lessons learned
in the Nebraska match that you carried over and worked
on against Penn State.
Speaker 15 (07:06):
I think just how we start every game in every set.
For the Nebraska game, we had some rough starts every set,
so I think we really went into practice focusing on
how we started every game, how we started every different drill.
So I think just learning how to start sets a
little faster and then especially finishing them. So I think
that was a big thing we took into Penn State
(07:26):
was once we got to twenty, we were rolling and
we weren't going to let them take it from us.
Speaker 3 (07:30):
What was practice like leading up to Penn State?
Speaker 15 (07:35):
I think, very focused, very competitive. We brought a lot
of fire to those practices, and you could tell we
kind of had a little edge on us from that
tough loss against Nebraska. So I think just using those
days to really work on the things that were shown
during the Nebraska game that we needed to work on
before Penn State.
Speaker 5 (07:52):
A little Bertie told me that Leah Edmund got to
work out with y'all and practice with you. How much
did that help having somebody of her caliber on the
floor with Yes, she did.
Speaker 15 (08:01):
She's very competitive, amazing athlete obviously, so it's always good
to have her in the gym pushing us to be
better every single time.
Speaker 5 (08:09):
Chatting with Molly Tuzzo here from Kentucky Volleyball. If they're
coming off the victories over Penn State and New Hampshire,
I know one of the focuses coming out of Nebraska
is you wanted to try to balance the floor more
offensively get the ball to the right side. Some do
you feel like you are getting close to where you
want to be in terms of the full balance and
efficiency of the offense after this weekend?
Speaker 14 (08:31):
For sure.
Speaker 15 (08:31):
Our setters have been working so hard to focus on
the sets behind with the middle and the right side,
so I think there's definitely still some growth in balance
that we can get better at, but it's definitely getting
where we want it to be.
Speaker 5 (08:44):
Reck Hall, as we talked about, can be a tough
place to play, especially to serve, because the fans are
right on top of you. You had an excellent service weekend.
I thought the team overall had a great service weekend.
So how are you able to block out those students
and all the noise and execute when it was your turn?
Speaker 15 (09:03):
I think just tuning into what I know how to
do and kind of blocking them all out. I mean,
I personally didn't even really hear them because I was
so focused on the serve, and obviously a serve is
all on me, so I was just kind of trusting
my skills and what I know how to do and
just trying to block them out as much as possible.
Speaker 5 (09:21):
Obviously, when you come to Kentucky with the program that
Coach Skinner's built, you know you're going to be in
big matches. So you all were used to being in
environments like this or high caliber matchups. How much fun
do you have competing in these big games like this,
because even though it's regular season, non conference, they still
matter a time.
Speaker 14 (09:40):
I love it.
Speaker 15 (09:41):
Coach Skinner's always big on scheduling super hard in non conference,
but I think it's so good for us to learn
how to deal with those tough environments and maybe some
hard losses, but they're all amazing teams that we're playing against,
and that's really a time to just grow and get
through the adversity.
Speaker 14 (09:57):
So I think the.
Speaker 15 (09:58):
Environments are so much fun to play, and I love it.
Every single non conference season, you.
Speaker 5 (10:03):
And I could probably sit here all morning and talk
about your teammates and everything that they contribute.
Speaker 3 (10:08):
But a few people I want to ask you about.
Speaker 5 (10:11):
Obviously, Brooklyn Delay gets a lot of headlines just an
outstanding player, but there's others like Cassie O'Brien. I thought
stepped up and she was huge for this team against
Penn State as she was inserted in that second set.
Speaker 15 (10:25):
She brings fire every single day in practice and I
think people could see that whenever she was in that game,
and she got thrown into the match and did exactly
what she needed to do, and I think she just ran.
Speaker 5 (10:35):
With it avas Sarafa started that match, and as talented
as she is, you mix in Cassie, that's a nice
little duo right there.
Speaker 15 (10:44):
They've both been doing so amazing in practice and just
competing for that spot and any day it could be
either of them. So I think just both of them
coming in whenever they do and making an impact is incredible.
Speaker 5 (10:57):
Eva and Brooklyn have both throwing a lot of attention
from defenses and they've also been involved with a ton
of kills early in the season. But I thought one
of the keys to beating Penn State and dominating the
way you did against New Hampshire.
Speaker 3 (11:11):
Was they still got theirs, but.
Speaker 5 (11:13):
It was within an efficient system where everybody else was
contributing three to four kills as well.
Speaker 15 (11:19):
Yeah, I mean it's tough whenever we were only setting
the outsides kind of during Nebraska, because they obviously knew
where we were going to set the ball since they
were producing most of our kills. So I think those
practices in between, they were really working on the middle
and behind it get that balance offense, which then opened
up either one or two blockers for our outsides where
they could just dominate even more.
Speaker 5 (11:40):
And I guess maybe a great example of that would
be Asia. She was critical to winning that third set
against Penn State when you guys were able to make
the run to come back and then take the lead
in that set.
Speaker 16 (11:50):
Yes, she is.
Speaker 15 (11:51):
She is such a competitive player. I mean every day
in practice she's just pounding balls left and right. So
it's great to have her on the floor.
Speaker 5 (11:59):
By the way, in the match had eighteen kills, she
had three service ass and eight digs. When you watch
her compete, what just stands out about Brooklyn I think just.
Speaker 15 (12:09):
How she competes every single point. There's not a point
where she lets off the gas or just gives it away.
So I think just how bought in she is to
every single point in doing her job and playing for
the people next to her.
Speaker 5 (12:21):
Chatting with Molly Tuzzo of Kentucky Volleyball on BBN Radio
were presented by Clark's Pumping Shop. They've got a match
against pitt on Wednesday, September tenth. Another road match. Oh
it's a neutral court match, but it's down in Fort Worth,
Texas six point thirty start. Finally get to open your
home schedule this weekend after you go to Fort Worth.
(12:43):
I imagine this team is itching to get in front
of the big Blue nation at this Sport Memorial Coliseum.
Speaker 14 (12:48):
Yes we are. We're super excited.
Speaker 15 (12:49):
We've been on the road a lot, obviously, so it's
always good to be back in Memorial.
Speaker 5 (12:54):
Let's go back to that win over Penn State in
New Hampshire this weekend, coming off the Big Tree gets
the Nitney Lyons quick turnaround to play the Wildcats of
you and Ah, how tough was it to kind of
get refocused and be prepared to take on New Hampshire
the very next day.
Speaker 14 (13:12):
I think we just really took it day by day.
Speaker 15 (13:14):
Obviously, we got done with Penn State and then watched
film on New Hampshire.
Speaker 14 (13:18):
So I think we treat every team like there are
some big match er whatever it is.
Speaker 15 (13:24):
So I think just really focusing on treating every team
like they're a national championship team.
Speaker 5 (13:30):
For Kentucky, it was last year when you put on
the libero jersey for the first time.
Speaker 3 (13:34):
How do you feel you've grown in that role into
this season now?
Speaker 15 (13:38):
I think my leadership is a big piece that's grown.
My freshman year, I was probably a mouse. I didn't
really speak at all. So I think just with experience
and growing and maturing, I've really grown in my leadership.
Speaker 5 (13:51):
In voice, that's a position that coach Skinner has always
built around his program. He's always had great Libero play.
How much did he help you find that voice and
just kind of grow into the role once you put
that jersey on?
Speaker 14 (14:06):
He was a big help.
Speaker 15 (14:07):
I mean going into his office and just talking to
him about what I needed to get better at, or
just him giving me the confidence to use my voice
more has been tuly a really big help. So I
think just him as a whole trusting in me and
letting me grow has been amazing.
Speaker 3 (14:21):
What is it like playing Liberro for Coach Skinner and
how demanding he can be?
Speaker 14 (14:27):
I don't, I mean, it's amazing.
Speaker 15 (14:29):
It's a big role to fill, obviously because we've been
known to have such amazing liberos, so I think it's
a big role to fill.
Speaker 14 (14:35):
But I'm ready and it's exciting to play for him.
Speaker 3 (14:38):
No pressure, right, no pressure.
Speaker 5 (14:41):

Volleyball Junior Liberro out of the Woodlands, Texas. This coming Wednesday,
the volleyball team will be in action against pitt at

This is I believe the.
Speaker 5 (20:54):
First of three trips to Texas and being from the Woodlands.
For folks who don't know, can we just say it's

Speaker 5 (21:05):
So it's the first of I think three to Texas.
How excited are you to be going generally in the
direction towards home in Fort Worth.
Speaker 14 (21:13):
I'm so excited.
Speaker 15 (21:14):
It's always amazing to be back in Texas, and obviously
it's easy for my family to travel there, so I'm
super excited that we get to go there three times.
Speaker 5 (21:21):
Expecting a lot of family and friends to be in

Speaker 14 (21:33):
Oh yeah.
Speaker 5 (21:35):
Pitt is the next opponent Final four teen a season ago.
Have you all started the prep on them? What do
you know about the Panthers?
Speaker 15 (21:44):
We have They have an amazing offense and great floor defense, obviously,
so we're starting to watch film on them. I think
we have some team film today, So just getting prepared
as possible for their hitters and defense.
Speaker 5 (21:56):
Knowing that this team still wants to get better and
improve on things. What's the focus going to be in
preparation for pitt on Wednesday.
Speaker 15 (22:04):
I think there's just some things that we saw show
in the Penn State in New Hampshire game. Obviously we
swept them, but there's still so much more to show
from Kentucky Volleyball. So I think just really honing in
on those few things that we can still continue to
get better at before our next team.
Speaker 5 (22:18):
By the time the SEC starts, you'll have played all
four of the teams that were in the Final four
last year. What is the value of having such a
challenging schedule like that, or in other words, how does
it help this team get better?
Speaker 15 (22:31):
I think Craig always says that you got to play
good teams to be good teams. So I think that
it's just really good for us to play those super hard,
tough teams in the beginning of the season so we're
ready whenever it comes to November December, whenever we're playing
the super hard teams. So I think it's just really
good for us to go through the adversity early on.
Speaker 5 (22:50):
You've also got some challenging teams in the SEC. I
feel like the conference gets better and better. You've added
Texas in recent years. Florida has always been challenging, but
it feels like the rest of the league is getting
better too. Yeah, we're chatting with Molly Tuzzo here on
BBN Radio presented by Clark's Pumping Shop. And I've had
several people talk to me about the team and about
(23:12):
your game, and I've heard you described a couple of
times as a pretty good offensive liberro. You help out
within the flow of the offense trying to get the
second ball. So tell me a little bit about, especially
when the team is in the bro offense, tell me
a little bit about how you help contribute offensively.
Speaker 15 (23:33):
I think whenever it comes to libero setting and high balls,
people aren't really expecting a faster offense. So I've really
been working on using tempo and setting faster to the
pins and outside so there isn't that two blockers or
whatever three blockers there since obviously whenever it comes out
of system, blockers are kind of ready and knowing where
it's going. So I think just running that faster tempo
(23:55):
allows for them to have seams and open blocks, and
it also.
Speaker 5 (23:58):
Gives an assist to the setters to because you're right
there backing them up, right. So the bro offense for
the people who don't know, I think that's short for Liberro.
That's where the bro offics, right. Hopefully we're not giving
away too many secrets on that, but I imagine it's
(24:19):
pretty good to be sitting at three and one. But
I wanted to ask you about the chemistry of this team.
How quickly did it come together?
Speaker 14 (24:27):
Super fast? Honestly?
Speaker 15 (24:28):
I mean, we had everyone in January, so that was
a really cool experience for us to be able to
have them the entire spring. So I think we just
were really good about getting close outside of the court,
not only on the court. In past years, maybe we
didn't have that chemistry right off the bat, but I
think it's really cool that we could use everyone for
(24:49):
the extra months to get closer.
Speaker 3 (24:51):
Well.
Speaker 5 (24:51):
And I was going to say too, with the road
schedule you've had playing these neutral side or true road games,
it's a lot of time together, hotels, boat planes, whatever, Right,
Yes it is.
Speaker 3 (25:04):
Do you have.
Speaker 5 (25:06):
What's a routine like when you go on the road.
Are you pretty routine oriented with things? What's what's a
normal road trip like for Molly I.
Speaker 15 (25:14):
Am pretty routine. I like having a schedule and a routine,
so I'm not all over the place. But I think
whenever we get there, it's practice and then dinner, watch
some film, go to bed, get good sleep, and then
wake up.
Speaker 14 (25:28):
Maybe another practice if it's a late game.
Speaker 15 (25:30):
So pretty bought into just school, getting school done, and
then focusing on the game.
Speaker 3 (25:36):
Yeah, I could pretty well attest from going on the
road with women's basketball. These are business trips.
Speaker 5 (25:41):
It's not a whole lot going on outside of practice
and getting ready.
Speaker 3 (25:44):
For the game or the match.
Speaker 14 (25:46):
Yeah, pretty routine.
Speaker 3 (25:49):
Playing at historic Memorial Coliseum.
Speaker 5 (25:51):
There are multiple sports that play there, stunt women's basketball,
gymnastics competes there, so I imagine you cross paths with
basketball players and all these other sports on a daily
basis in the halls or maybe in the trainer's room.
Pretty neat place to make friends across different sports, right.
Speaker 8 (26:11):
What's that like?
Speaker 15 (26:12):
Everyone is so amazing in Kentucky, So I think just
having that connection with different sports, obviously sharing a facility
with them, it's just super good to connect with other
teams other than ours.
Speaker 5 (26:22):
We chatted in the last segment about getting back in
front of big Blue Nation at the coliseum. What do
you enjoy most about competing with the Blue and White
cheering you on in the sands.
Speaker 14 (26:35):
BBN is so amazing.
Speaker 15 (26:36):
They always show out for us, so I think it's
always good to show them what we're about and give
back to them since they bring so.
Speaker 14 (26:41):
Much to us.
Speaker 5 (26:43):
That first matchup at home is going to be this Saturday,
September thirteenth against SMU.
Speaker 3 (26:49):
First serve is three pm, and of.
Speaker 5 (26:52):
Course it's going to be a big Saturday because you've
got first home volleyball match and then there's a football
game later that evening. So the perfect scenario, Molly is
to come to the volleyball game at three thirty and
then go to football at seven thirty.
Speaker 14 (27:06):
Right, That's what I'm saying. Hopefully, hopefully people do it.
Speaker 3 (27:09):
That's right. That's right. Well, a couple of questions before
we wrap this up here, just overall about your career.
When did you first start playing volleyball? When did you
fall in love with the sport.
Speaker 14 (27:21):
I started playing when I was like ten.
Speaker 15 (27:24):
I believe I played soccer growing up my entire life,
and then my mom was like, hey, you want to
play volleyball because she was a coach and my sister
obviously played two, so it's kind of running in the family.
So she was like, hey, try this out, and then
I was done with the running from soccer and I
was like, I kind of like this, So yeah, So
that leads.
Speaker 3 (27:44):
Me into my next question of what drew you to
the sport. It's sort of a family thing, right it is.
Speaker 5 (27:50):
We're chatting with Molly Tezzo as Kentucky Volleyball gets ready
to take on pitt this Wednesday down at Dicky's Arena
in Fort Worth, coming off a huge win against Penn
State and New Hampshire over the weekend, got the SEC
coming up. We've already kind of talked about how tough
the SEC can be, but Molly, as you look out
over the conference this year, how do you I mean,
(28:13):
what do you see out of the league this year
and how it's going to challenge the Cats.
Speaker 15 (28:17):
There's so many amazing teams in the SEC now, especially
like you mentioned adding Texas and Oklahoma, So I think
just taking every game by itself and not looking too
far ahead into the championships or the SEC tournament that's
also new this year, So I think there's going to
be a lot of tough matches, but we're getting prepared
and we're ready.
Speaker 5 (28:36):
We mentioned going to Texas and how your family will
try to come to some of those matches, but I'm
also curious how often does your family get up here
to watch you compete and do they kind of follow
you and the team's.
Speaker 3 (28:47):
On the road.
Speaker 15 (28:48):
They come to a lot of matches. I'm so grateful
for them, and they travel a lot. They try and
get done here as much as possible. I think they're
about to be here for like two and a half weeks. Well,
they'll be here for a while.
Speaker 3 (28:59):
Come and camp out, they do.
Speaker 14 (29:00):
They're bringing my dog this time.
Speaker 3 (29:02):
So that's great. What kind of dog do you have.
Speaker 14 (29:04):
It's a French bulldog. He's a little crazy. But what's
his name, Enzo?
Speaker 3 (29:10):
Well, hopefully Enzo will have a ticket to smatches if
I don't know, I don't know if he'll be there.
Speaker 16 (29:16):
But yeah, Molly was.
Speaker 5 (29:18):
Great chatting with you. Thanks so much for stopping by again.
Congratulations on the wins this weekend and good luck against Pitt.
Speaker 14 (29:24):
Thank you, thank you for having me.
Speaker 5 (29:25):

It said See and Radio presented by Clark Nothing Shop.
Speaker 5 (32:58):
We just had a great visit with Molly Tezzo of
Kentucky Volleyball, and now we'd like to welcome in our
second guest to the program this week, and it's Troy Fabiano,
the women's soccer head coach. They're off to an I
six and two start on the season, a lot of
matches at home so far. In fact, it's been eight
straight at the Bell so coach. Most recently had a
(33:19):
tough matchup against a top twenty Ohio state squad. Your
team competed well, outshot them thirteen to seven, but came
up a little short to nothing. What was your overall
takeaway from a matchup a top twenty matchup with the Buckeyes.
Speaker 16 (33:32):
Yeah.
Speaker 25 (33:33):
I thought we'd had a tough start, obviously giving a
goal up three minutes into the game, but I thought
we responded pretty well. But again, in games like that,
when you're playing a top twenty, A pointed you can't
make mistakes, and against them in Illinois, we sort of
beat ourselves again. You know, we've all shot both of them,
and we just have to sort of create opportunities, which
we are, but finish them.
Speaker 8 (33:53):
And in games like that, you know it's going to
be tight and we're missing that right now.
Speaker 5 (33:58):
In terms of creating opportunity is your offense is towards
the top of the SEC and a lot of offensive categories,
especially shots. How pleased have you been with the way
this team is performed offensively?
Speaker 25 (34:09):
Yeah, so far, good start, but obviously we know you're
jumping in the SEC, the opportunities are going to be
a lot more limited. So again we have to make
sure we create chances, but we also have to finish
those chances, because again we're not going to lead the
country in shots once SEC play is over.
Speaker 5 (34:26):
In terms of the team itself, you replaced seven you
and I were just talking, really nine starters off last
year's team that made the second round of the NCAA tournament.
So a young team this year. How have you seen
them begin to grow and come together?
Speaker 25 (34:41):
Just like any young team, it's like a Earl Coast ride.
It has its up has its downs. But obviously for
for most part it's been good. You know, we just
want to continue to build and continue to get moving forward.
You know, you've you've had some kids come in and
like Gabby Pereto, play in the back, play every minute.
The goalkeepers are both freshmen, so we're excited with that.
But again we understand that there's going to be ups
(35:01):
and downs when you have such a young group.
Speaker 5 (35:03):
But starting off playing nine straight matches at home, how
has that helped keep them around campus, getting practices and
being arrested that sort of thing.
Speaker 25 (35:12):
Yeah, I think non matches it helps a group that's
not familiar with grow familiar with the area, especially the surrounding,
especially with classes beginning.
Speaker 8 (35:18):
Then when they arrive classes not starting. So it's been good.
So but I think at some point, you know, it's
going to be excited to go on the road and
we need it as a team.
Speaker 3 (35:25):
Also, soccer is such a global sport, but it's also
growing in the United States.
Speaker 5 (35:30):
We see that year over year. How much has that helped.
I don't want to say ease recruiting, there's nothing easy
about recruiting, but how much has it helped having so
much growing attention in the United States and bringing kids
to Kentucky.
Speaker 8 (35:42):
Yeah, I think it's helped just the sport overall.
Speaker 25 (35:44):
Like you said, you know, you look at Lexington just
in general, in the clubs and the pro scene now
and it's helped draw a lot of interest to our
program and a lot of interest to the sport in general,
which is huge because we're all ambassadors to that growth.
Speaker 8 (35:56):
But it's excited to see just in the global.
Speaker 25 (35:58):
Level what it's done, especially on the women's side, how
it's changed with now two pro leagues.
Speaker 5 (36:03):
Yeah, in terms of the pro leagues, I believe was
it this year. Last year you had a little exhibition
matchup with with the local Lexington Pro team.
Speaker 3 (36:12):
I imagine that was it was. It was an experience, it.
Speaker 25 (36:15):
Was fun, it was a good experience for everybody. It's
it's good to see and you know, obviously for that
it was. It was a year one for a pro league.
Just like anything when you start something new, there's going
to be a lot of valleys if you want to
call it, at ups and downs. But it was fun
and I think it would be great to have sort
of more of a community event with something like that
would be really cool for Lexington in the area.
Speaker 5 (36:37):
Troy Fabiano is our guest here on Clark's bb AND
Radio presented by Clark's Pumping Shop, and we mentioned that
you lead the SEC and several offensive categories, but another
one that stuck out to me was you're towards the
top and quarter kicks per game. Tell me a little
bit about how this team is getting quarter kick opportunity, but.
Speaker 8 (36:56):
We're generating a lot, we're not being very efficient with them.
Speaker 25 (37:00):
You know, you look at really the two people out
wide as Tylinda and Tanner Strickland that have the ability
to run into people and get people to the end
line and then if they get cut off, the ability
to draw corner kicks. I think one of the things
we really have to focus in on going in the
SEC is just being better on set pieces because again
we've we've lead, we lead the country in corner kicks,
(37:20):
but it hasn't led to many great opportunities for us consistently,
and that's something we have to get better with the
services on.
Speaker 5 (37:28):
In terms of the offense, three headed attack on goal,
you've got Alexis TYLANDA and A Sikorski and kat Wrap.
Tell me a little bit about their games and how
they've really helped this team offensively.
Speaker 25 (37:39):
And Anna Sikorski is a left back as a left defender,
so she's she's one of the kids that we want
to get forward.
Speaker 8 (37:45):
I think Grace Whitink on the opposite side.
Speaker 25 (37:47):
She's been out numerous games, but now you put both
of those on the outside back positions I think will
create a lot of more opportunities for us. Kat has
been a great addition through the portal, has a bit
bright future after college. Just reads the game and is
able to find pockets and make great runs. Again, Tyland
has taken a step forward as.
Speaker 8 (38:05):
A left winger.
Speaker 25 (38:07):
Now we just need her to be a little bit
more efficient when the games are a little bit tighter.
But again, you know her sophomore year, she's grown a lot.
Speaker 5 (38:13):
Tanner Strickland towards the top of the league and the
country and assists tell me a little bit about her game.
Speaker 8 (38:20):
So we pushed her out wide.
Speaker 25 (38:22):
Extremely dangerous, very very confident right now running at people.
I think she's also drawn four pks, has the ability
to be dangerous one on one, has the ability to
get to the end line, woopballs across.
Speaker 8 (38:34):
So she's been really great for.
Speaker 3 (38:35):
US out wide.
Speaker 5 (38:37):
Controlling time of possession has been a big factor for
this team so far, and for folks that have followed
soer time of possession usually means more shots on goals,
so yes.
Speaker 25 (38:49):
But the soccer yeah, correct, But the joys of soccer
doesn't mean you get results.
Speaker 8 (38:54):
That's one of the positives and negative. If you want
to say, if.
Speaker 25 (38:56):
Our sport is you can dominate play so much, and
even for example, against Illinois, we dominated play for a
majority of the time, but you gave up a bad
mistake which led to.
Speaker 8 (39:07):
A goal and then one corner kick to our eight
and end up losing two to one.
Speaker 3 (39:12):
You know what I mean.
Speaker 25 (39:13):
So again, even like against Ohio State, is we gave
up an early goal and I think we settled into
the game and your only second half.
Speaker 8 (39:20):
Shot on goal is a goal. That's the joy of soccer,
So I think again, you know, we we have possession.
Speaker 25 (39:26):
We've been to possession based a little bit more this
year because we don't have maybe that vertical threat that
we had last year.
Speaker 8 (39:31):
But again is we have to create those opportunities and
be a little bit more efficient.
Speaker 5 (39:36):
But in terms of the time of possession, you know,
you hear about that and other sports like football, they
always mentioned time of possession.
Speaker 3 (39:42):
It keeps the ball away from the other team.
Speaker 5 (39:43):
But in soccer, I would imagine it can also frustrate
the opponent because they can't get any attacks because they're
chasing you around the pitch all game.
Speaker 25 (39:52):
Correctly, it wears down a little bit, right I meaning
you want just think about you ask anybody let's go
run with a ball.
Speaker 8 (39:58):
You can do it, compared to let's just go run
in general. So it does wear and in taxes on you.
Speaker 25 (40:02):
The joys of between the two sports is if there's
a transition, if there's a turnover, well you can sell
people in sell people out. In our sport, the balls
directly going the other way. So just as similar to basketball,
you have to transition back and again. Against Ohio State
is if you should look at it, they score a
second goal with nine minutes left. At that point, we're
just pushing numbers forward because you lose one zero, two zero.
Speaker 8 (40:22):
At the end of the day, it's still a loss.
Speaker 5 (40:24):
The coaches, you're getting ready for SEC play, playing a
team like Ohio State ranked in the top twenty. Obviously
you're playing and competing to win the match. But what
can playing a team like that as you get ready
for SEC play, how does that help you? What can
you take away from that?
Speaker 25 (40:39):
I think that's what you're going to see in the SEC.
I mean Ohio State is a great mirror of what
we're going to see. And I think what five out
of the ten teams that we play in the SEC
are ranked in the top twenty. So again, that's the
joy of being in the SEC. That's why we're here,
That's why I'm here. I love that opportunity. But again,
we want to have make sure that going into Oklahoma's
probably going to be ranked in the fifteen area.
Speaker 8 (40:58):
We've experienced that.
Speaker 16 (40:59):
Now.
Speaker 5 (41:00):
Well, the good news is one thing you always want
to do in any sport is protect home turf, and
your team has really done that going back to last
year undefeated this year, a couple losses, but still overall
your program has done a great job of protecting the bell.
Speaker 25 (41:15):
Yeah, and we need to be a little bit better, right,
We gave up two losses this year, but I think
SEC play. We looked at the season of you have
three seasons you're guaranteed, the two scrimmages, the non conference portion,
and now SEC portion.
Speaker 8 (41:27):
So you know, the scrimmages took care of it.
Speaker 25 (41:28):
Sales non conference you're six and two now everybody's zero
and zero, so you know, our main focus is Oklahoma
and we need BBN to come out Friday night.
Speaker 8 (41:36):
It's a great opportunity Friday.
Speaker 25 (41:38):
Night to support us because the one thing every coach
will always tell you is the environment drives and helps
so much our players.
Speaker 5 (41:49):
We're chatting with head coach Troy Fabiano of Kentucky Women Soccer.
We're going to take a quick time out here on
BBN Radio presented by Clark's Pumping Shop, and we'll continue
with coach right after this here on the UK Sports Network.
Speaker 21 (42:02):
Oh right, all right, it's a beautiful day for football
here at the stadium and we're just about ready for kickoff,
score zero zero and suddenly I'm in the mood for
a Coke zero sugar Real Coke Taste zero sugar.
Speaker 22 (42:16):
No, that's a winning combo, Yeah, Chris, refreshing that hits
the spot when it comes to great taste. Coke zero
sugar is always on the scoreboard. Coke zero sugar, Real
Coke Taste zero sugar.

FINALD segment Hobo Radio bringingited by Clark's Pumping Shop for
this week. And it's going to be a fun weekend.
Lots going on around campus. How about this? We got
women's soccer Friday night opening SEC play against a ranked
Oklahoma team. Looks like they'll probably be anywhere from the
top twenty to top fifteen, So a good Sooners club
coming into the ball Friday night. We've got volleyball their
(47:27):
first home match on Saturday, and of course football at
Krogerfield against Eastern Michigan at seven point thirty Saturday night.
Our guest is Troy Fabiano of Kentucky Women's Soccer, So
coach a fun weekend coming up. I would imagine weekends
like this when it comes to just the fan interaction,
the recruiting and all that, These kind of weekends are
(47:48):
big around Lexington one hundred percent.
Speaker 25 (47:50):
I mean, you have recruits on campus and they want
to see that vibe, they want to see that environment,
they want to sort of image see what they're going
to play at.
Speaker 8 (47:57):
So you know, it's been very helpful.
Speaker 25 (47:59):
Like one of our games, we had the rugby men's
team come out, amazing environment for them.
Speaker 8 (48:04):
Obviously, they're very quiet people. Their whole section basically made
up like of a thousand people. It sounded like we
actually had to move them behind the goals because none
of our players could hear. But it was a great
environment that created. But you know, that's what we need that.
Speaker 25 (48:18):
I think it drives our team, It drives student athletes
to have that vibe.
Speaker 3 (48:23):
Yeah, and of course at the bell.
Speaker 5 (48:25):
It's always a great environment and admission is free to
the public for the soccer matches that's.
Speaker 25 (48:29):
Crue so there's no reason not to come out right,
So hopefully we provide a great product. You know, the
opportunity to come watch a high level, especially in the SEC,
is there. And again, like we were talking about, you're
going to have five opponents that are basically in the
top ten, top twenty five throughout the SEC play.
Speaker 5 (48:43):
Oklahoma's obviously a quality opponent coming in here ranked in
the top twenty. It's a seven thirty pm Eastern first
kick at the ball this coming Friday, September twelfth, Kentucky
and Oklahoma. You mentioned the ranked teams, but for those
that haven't had a chance to dive into it, kind
of give us a an overview of the landscape in
the league and who are some of the teams to
watch out for in the race this year.
Speaker 8 (49:05):
I mean, Arkansas has won the regular season I think
the last six years.
Speaker 25 (49:09):
But I think it's one of those leagues that from
top to bottom, it's always a debate, right what's has
the strongest slee frost Top to bottom, there.
Speaker 3 (49:15):
Is no debate.
Speaker 8 (49:16):
It's the SEC. So it's it is a brutal conference.
It's a grind.
Speaker 25 (49:21):
You can have anybody from the bottom of the table
beat somebody on the top of the table.
Speaker 8 (49:24):
So this is always going to be interesting.
Speaker 25 (49:25):
There is there always one program that maybe a lot
of people don't sort of recognize and see that'll creep
up there. But even look at like last year, Vanderbilts
beats Florida State, who is the number one seed in
the NC tournament.
Speaker 5 (49:36):
So the SEC is a grind, and you're going to
do this into this grind with a pair of rookie
goalkeepers Shelby and Cadizel. What has that battle been like
watching those two freshmen in the net.
Speaker 25 (49:50):
So it's actually Meghan and Cadijuz. Shelby is actually so
that's a right. So we have three freshmen, not just too,
we have three freshmen. Shelby has been injured, Meghan and
Kadija has split time. It's been fun to watch them compete.
I think they both have big ceilings. And to be
honest with you, this week is going to really determine
on where we go against Oklahoma because we split time
(50:11):
for majority of the games. So this week we'll really
determine on. You know, who gets that start and train
is going to be important for both of them.
Speaker 5 (50:19):
Chatting with Troy Fabiano of Kentucky Women's Soccer and we
talked about the youth of this team coming off a
great run last year in the NCAA tournament, replacing essentially
nine starters. In this era where rosters can be kind
of transient because of the portal and things like that,
how easier has it made it to try to restock
(50:40):
using the portal when you have so many graduates and
things like that, so many players that leave.
Speaker 25 (50:45):
Yeah, I think that definitely the portal has helped improve
the roster. The challenge with that is the stability of it,
especially when you had kids with the grad or the
COVID years, which helped that fifth year, which was a
big help for us last year.
Speaker 8 (50:57):
In year two. Again, it's it's an inch dynamic because.
Speaker 25 (51:01):
You wonder moving forward, how do certain sports and how
do you build a roster moving forward?
Speaker 8 (51:07):
Is it just through the portal?
Speaker 25 (51:09):
Is it through the traditional of high school players? I
think for us it's going to be more traditional i'm sorry,
more of a highbred of a combination of both. But again,
it's I think a lot of people would say, it's
a little bit of common sense if if I can
go grab a kid that's twenty one, twenty two years
old that has three years of college experience compared to
a sixteen seventeen year old kid coming out of high school?
Speaker 8 (51:27):
Which kid are you going to sort of chase after?
Speaker 5 (51:30):
And it's not just the portal that you've got this roster.
You got ten freshmen on the roster this year. What
do you like most?
Speaker 3 (51:37):
What pleases you most about the way your freshmen have competed.
Speaker 25 (51:40):
I think the biggest thing in the statl like you said,
is they competed. You know, so far this point, they've competed.
They've understand that what it means, what it is to compete.
The biggest thing is just when you deal with freshman
is the consistency. You know, can we find a way
to be consistent and continue to click upward compared to
up and down, up and down? And I think that's
a lot of you know, especially on the field, but
let's face it, off the field, being away.
Speaker 8 (52:00):
From home for the first time.
Speaker 25 (52:02):
Class is now starting, you know, two weeks ago, so
there's a lot of moving pieces which a lot of
people sort of maybe don't see. Especially for us being
a fall sport, there is no transition. It is ready
set goal and now classes begin, compared to maybe being
a spring sport where they have that fall semester for
them to sort of have that transition.
Speaker 5 (52:23):
I had this conversation with a young man that played
football for Kentucky, and I'm curious about other sports such
as soccer. In the off season, you have limited opportunities
to be in the in the gym working out, getting
your workout routines in, or on the field getting your
reps in terms of and those are always critical, but
(52:43):
in this day and age, are those opportunities more critical
to try to get the chemistry built, get everybody to
learn the system and comfortable playing, such as for Kentucky, yeah.
Speaker 8 (52:55):
Hundred percent the spring, you know, you're sort of limited.
Speaker 25 (52:59):
It is a big trans especially when you're building a
program and there's a lot of transitions through the roster
that cohesions as a group.
Speaker 8 (53:08):
How do you build out how do you grow that?
Speaker 25 (53:10):
And for our sport, it's like, again, we started August
first and now it's I don't even know what data
is then for something and we're basically eight games into
the season, which half of our season has already gone, right,
you know what I mean, And you're still trying to
find pieces and making things work. And again, the other
dynamic which we talked about is you're two weeks into
classes where the first couple of weeks you just have
(53:33):
that soccer component to it.
Speaker 5 (53:35):
And I would imagine too, you have your system and
the way you do things, the standards you've set. But
at the same time, I guess you have to adjust
depending on the year, to your personnel, how you approach
coaching the team right, maybe coaching them hard or when
to back off and things like that.
Speaker 25 (53:50):
That's always fun to find out, right, the dynamics on
what's starting a player ticks and what player doesn't tick.
Speaker 3 (53:55):
But it's the.
Speaker 25 (53:56):
Interesting piece too, is because, like you said, as you're
trying to build a roster, and and when you when
you're building a roster, you have you know, the transfer portal,
and you have kids coming in coming out, and the
stability is a little bit more difficult. It's improved our
roster drastically long term. Again, it's interesting how you build
that roster moving forward. But that cohesiveness I think is
just difficult for a lot of fall sports.
Speaker 8 (54:17):
To sort of find.
Speaker 3 (54:19):
Your leaders on the team.
Speaker 5 (54:21):
The veterans, how have you seen them try to help
the younger players along this season?
Speaker 8 (54:25):
Yeah, and you look at at a sky leech, you
look at a cat rap.
Speaker 25 (54:29):
Those are the kids that have been through the grind
that have seen that. I think they're both if you
want to say, quiet leaders. They sort of lead more
by example. So they've been very helpful because they've been
at different levels. But I think, you know that's an
opportunity again, do you know do freshmen actually absorb or
are they just so far over their head that they're
(54:50):
just going through motions again? You know, you can sit
there and talk about it as I remember when I
was a youngsters like you had all these older people tell.
Speaker 8 (54:58):
You that when I was a kid, I used to
do this, and I use is that even at my
age back then, I'd be like, sure, that was a
long time ago. I don't even know what you mean.
Speaker 25 (55:04):
But if you could actually absorb something of what they
told you, and then they very useful. So you really
sometimes you wonder like they actually are getting some of
the things. Are they actually understanding what you're trying to get?
Your point across.
Speaker 5 (55:20):
We're chatting with Troy Fabiano just a couple of minutes
left in the show. Kentucky Women's Soccer hosting Oklahoma this
Friday night at the Bell, and we talked about the
fan base, free admission to the public, the great atmospheres
and environments you've had, but it's also something of interest
to you, the community involvement, the aspect of not just
the University of Kentucky but Lexington embracing the soccer team.
Speaker 25 (55:43):
Yeah, well we've done and we were as a staff,
especially a last spring, we did a real big emphasis
on just getting out to the community and doing local clinics,
just having sort of the build the brand of the
UK soccer program, but also the sport and getting our
staff out there in front of you know, the youth
kids in the area and that's a big interest for
us and obviously we want that support, we want those
(56:03):
families to come to games, but also what can we
do as a staff to give back to the community
is important for me.
Speaker 5 (56:10):
Well, coach, we appreciate you coming on with us and
again good luck with SEC play starting this weekend. We
look forward to seeing BBN turnout at the Bell Friday night.
And we'll catch up with you again.
Speaker 3 (56:21):
Down the road.
Speaker 8 (56:21):
Appreciate it and we need your support.
Speaker 5 (56:23):
That's Troy Fabiano, the head coach of Kentucky Women's Soccer
