Talking back here to Median Radio, we're presented by Clark's
Bumping Shop. Here on the UK Sports Network, Darreon Hedrick
joined by Doug Flynn, who is now I believe a
two time Hall of Famer the Kentucky Sports Hall of Fame. Oh,
five times Hall of Famer. I knew the Kentucky Sports
Hall of Fame, but now newly inducted member of the
UK Athletics Hall of Fame. Congratulations, my friend, Thanks big d.

Speaker 11 (05:58):
It's still kind of in shock. My wife still doesn't
believe it.

Speaker 19 (06:04):
I'm thinking that at the banquet that Ashton Coocher is
going to walk up to the microphone and go, well,
you've been punked, because it just seems so surreal. But
I can't imagine growing up in this town any greater honor,
and you know, playing ball just a year at this university,
any bigger honor than this. And I'm just like I said,
my cup is overflowing with gratitude and I'm just very blessed.

Speaker 4 (06:30):
Can you take me through the phone call or how
you were told?

Speaker 19 (06:35):
Well, I was told by Tony Neely that lion Dog
that Mitch would like to have a little podcast. And
what he would do is periodically he call in former
players and he would have a little talk. And they
wanted to talk to me about what was it like
my freshman year here rooming and playing with the first

(06:55):
African American player, and how did that lead on in?

Speaker 11 (07:00):
Well, yeah, you got me. I'm sold.

Speaker 19 (07:03):
And so Tony gets on and he starts talking. Then
here comes Mitch and then Mitch says, you know, when
we go through these Hall of Fame process it takes
a little while. And I said, and why are you
telling me? He said, well, you're being inducted into the
Hall of Fame. Come on, man, And as it totally
I was in my office and I mean I honestly

(07:25):
cried it just it was such a shock, and I
know how important it is. I have such respect for
the school, what's going on inside and the people who
have gone into that Hall of Fame for all these years,
many of whom have become very good friends.

Speaker 3 (07:40):
I read a book recently just came out about Memorial
Colisseum and its history. Kevin Cook was the author, and
you were featured towards the back end about memories of
the Colisseum, and it struck me. You know how you
grew up being a fan of Kentucky and then you
went to Brian's station and you got to play in
some games in the Colisseum right when you were in
high school.

Speaker 19 (08:00):
Yeah, I think somewhere between twelve and fourteen games, because
we used to be inner city double headers, so we'd
play Henry Clay, Lafayette, woud play Taste Creek and we'd
do that two or three times a year. So we'd
always play them there and have six to eight thousand
people come to the games. So then we'd have our
district basketball tournament there. Then we had our regional basketball

(08:21):
tournament there, so we happened we had a pretty good
team one point away from going to the state tournament.
And I got to play there a lot, and it was,
you know, it got to be so fun because there
was always a good crowd. And then when I came
to UK and we started playing, the fans were right
there on the floor, and I mean racous, buddy, that
place would rock eleven thousand, five hundred, which I thought

(08:41):
was the biggest building in the world, and it was
like that every single night, and it was just fun.

Speaker 11 (08:47):
And as a freshman playing there.

Speaker 19 (08:50):
We always had big crowds because people wanted to get
there early to see what the freshman team looked like
on the whole, at home or on the road.

Speaker 3 (08:57):
It's funny to think about back then you had freshman
teams and you guys played separately from the varsity, whereas
now the varsity team there for a little while was
mostly freshman.

Speaker 11 (09:09):
Yeah.

Speaker 19 (09:10):
Well, if somebody asked me, he said, so you weren't
able to play on the varsity, and I went, yeah,
I was not good enough, but we couldn't play anyway.

Speaker 11 (09:18):
But the varsity was ranked number one in the nation.

Speaker 19 (09:20):
So every day before we would work out, we got
the scrimmage of varsity dan Is Isel, Mike Pratt. Casey
was hurt, but Casey would would play a little bit
every now and then. Gosh, if they'd have had him
healthy their senior year, I think.

Speaker 11 (09:32):
They went it all.

Speaker 3 (09:34):
What was it like playing baseball at Kentucky too back then?
And the way college baseball has really advanced over the
eras well.

Speaker 19 (09:42):
I didn't play much, and for obvious reasons, you know,
I was five eight and one hundred and forty something pounds,
and after my senior year, I didn't grow any at all.
So they had a senior and second base good ball player,
Bill Workman, And there was a shortstop that came in
from junior college, a very good shorts And so I
only got nine at bats as a freshman. But you know,

(10:04):
I practiced every day and it was fun and the
game was way too big for me. Anyway. I wasn't
ready to play as a freshman. And that's what I
hear people say, Well, what's the deal, man, How could
they not want you to play on the baseball team
and then three years later you were in the major leagues. Well,
after my freshman year, I grew a few inches, I
started gaining a little weight, I started getting some maturity,
got a little quicker, my arm got a little stronger,

(10:26):
and then I just kept playing.

Speaker 11 (10:28):
But when I was here, the ball field is what's
really changed a bunch.

Speaker 4 (10:32):
I was going to ask you, was the ballfield?

Speaker 3 (10:34):
Did you play on the one that was over next
to Stolefield or had they already moved to I believe
it became.

Speaker 19 (10:40):
They moved over to Shively, But you know, you didn't
have those beautiful seats that they got after Coach Madison
got here. We just had bleacher seats, chain link fence
around the outfield. I don't even remember if there was
a batter's eye or not. But it was a little
rough and it was cold, and you only played I
think we only played twenty games, you.

Speaker 11 (10:58):
Know, maybe so it was.

Speaker 19 (11:01):
But I played with some great people, and I remember
some of the guys came over from the football team
and played, and there were just some really good people.
And more of them are coming out of the woodwork
now and I'm hearing from a lot of really great
old friends speaking.

Speaker 3 (11:13):
Of football, not at UK, but in high school, you
were a pretty good quarterback. Oh well, you were on
a team that was pretty good. I was on a
team that was pretty good. That was pretty much my history.
I was on a team that was pretty good, and
I was.

Speaker 19 (11:27):
A quarterback that knew how to hand it off to
an All state fullback by the name of Franklin Master,
who ended up coming to UK playing here four years
at linebacker and then linebacker for the Philadelphia Eagles for
ten years. So and then we had a great coach
and Dan Haley. The best quarterback on that team, though,
was Harry Sykes. Harry was six' two and could throw the.
FOOTBALL i couldn't even grip a football, hardly but you,

(11:49):
KNOW i knew how to run the plays AND i
knew how to, compete and that kind of got me
through a lot of high schools just knowing how to,
compete because the ability was certainly not as good as
a lot of the GUYS i played.

Speaker 3 (12:01):
Against we're chatting With Doug, flynn who's one of the
newly inducted members of The class of twenty twenty FIVE
Uk Athletics hall Of, fame AND i know the major
leagues would soon come. Calling so Your kentucky career was
a relatively short. One but what were someone sat there
and one and, done one and.

Speaker 11 (12:18):
Done you were a one and. Done you were one
of the, original one of the originals That.

Speaker 3 (12:23):
But what are some of your favorite memories of just
your time on, campus whether it be a game or
just being a student that you.

Speaker 11 (12:31):
There's so many good memories in that one.

Speaker 19 (12:33):
YEAR i mean trying to get the basketball team and
this little bitty dots and that my mom had and
take them from practice over to our house for. Dinner
you're trying to put six to Eleven Jim andrews in the,
front six Six Larry, stampers six Eight Dan perry and
six Four steve And nor went in the back of
this little car and trying to get them to my
house and then watch them just come over and just take.

(12:54):
Over the refrigerator was. Theirs whatever they, wanted they would
go and to this day still great. Friends Jim andrews
that the scrimmaging every day against the number one team
in the nation was just what a thrill learned a
lot of great. LESSONS i got kicked out of a
game IN lsu and And Dan thistle came into my

(13:16):
room and had a little heart to heart with me
and taught me a great lesson about when to react.

Speaker 11 (13:21):
And how to.

Speaker 19 (13:22):
React and he was right because at that TIME i
was the only one that could bring the ball up the.
FLOOR i get kicked out of the game. Early now
we got nobody to handle the. Ball And dan, says
just watch all the times THAT i take cheap. Shots he,
said because they know if they get me out of the,
game they got a good chance to beat. Us and he,
said that's not an arrogant, statement that's just the. Facts
and he, said on this, team you've got to be

(13:42):
the one that sets up the offense and bring.

Speaker 11 (13:43):
It so you got to take a little bit.

Speaker 19 (13:45):
More AND i remember that even as a baseball, player
If i'd smack a tag on somebody at second and
THOUGHT i had, him and the umpire say, safe AND
i remember s late in the game AND i wanted
to just really run my, mouth BUT i, thought you, know,
WELL i better stay in here because MAYBE i can
make a, play can save a.

Speaker 4 (14:01):
Run so that was.

Speaker 19 (14:03):
Good JUST i lived at, home so my night life
was zero BECAUSE i had to be home every. Night
AND i didn't mind. That that was good BECAUSE i
always got a good home cooked. Meal Coach, hall extremely
nice to, me went out of his, way not only
AFTER i was here one, year but the next year
to get me to go to another. School and you,

(14:23):

you grow up. Here you Watch Terry mobley And larry
Persifal On Cotton ash And Dicky parsons And Randy embry
and all those guys play, ball the man in the
brown suit on the side of the man in the brown.
Suit and you, know WHEN i was, here he didn't
have a lot of conversations with. Us he had a
couple with, me but which were? FUNNY i, mean we
got time for.

Speaker 4 (14:43):
One, yeah, yeah we got, yeah we got to break
here in a, minute but go, ahead.

Speaker 19 (14:47):
Lie so one of the first few practice we, have
they're working on his own AND i hit a couple
of shots from outside and all of a, sudden you
hear the whistle. Blow he's stand at mid. Court whistle
blows and he comes walking straight at, me And i'm,
thinking oh, boy so he comes.

Speaker 3 (15:02):

i you, KNOW i look How god's really orchestrated my,
life and they put me in a situation to get.

Speaker 11 (23:28):
THERE i mean when it got me, out.

Speaker 19 (23:29):
Gave me a GREAT i Think god knows the desire
of your, heart so you know he knows playing basketball
at The University. Kentucky every kid growing up here wants
to do. That so THEN i get to go to
a junior college WHERE i get an. EDUCATION i took
forty five. HOURS i get meet some new friends encouraged
me to go out and do, this and then all
of a, sudden Now i'm getting an opportunity to go
play ball because they some people saw more in me

(23:52):
THAN i. Did my confidence hadn't quite got to where
it should have. Been and then all of a, sudden
you go to pro ball and you have a little,
success and you move up to or next. Thing you,
know you start feeling, like, Hey i'm getting. Close who's
in front of, Me Dave concepcion And Joe, Morgan, well
you better get used to.

Speaker 11 (24:08):
The minor league because you're not going.

Speaker 19 (24:09):
Anywhere and then all of a, SUDDEN i go to
spring training and have one of the best spring trainings
certainly of my, life and one of the best that
ever happened in The reds, camp and they kept me.

Speaker 11 (24:19):
In you, KNOW i tricked them for eleven more.

Speaker 3 (24:21):
Years chatting With Doug flynn And, Doug i'd love to
continue on about your major league career if we were,
podcasting go and dive into it with, you but unfortunately
in here in, radio we have these pesky heart.

Speaker 4 (24:33):
Outs SO i only have so much time here to
visit with.

Speaker 2 (24:36):
You are you?

Speaker 3 (24:36):
So but your major league career with The, reds and
you played for some other Teams mets and The rangers
and the, like two Time world champion Gold glove winner
in nineteen eighty you also set a major league record
in one game with three.

Speaker 4 (24:51):
Triples how about? That how tired were you after that?

Speaker 11 (24:53):
GAME i THOUGHT i could fly out of the, building,
MAN i was, going you.

Speaker 19 (24:58):
Know the first only hit one in the right set of,
gap no hit won the left center field, gap one
in the right centerfield, gap and the last one In,
montreal just a routine line drive to left field. Base
it hit one of those scenes where the stands would
be pushed out for football and jumped right Over Ron lafloor's.

Speaker 11 (25:13):
Head and SO i eased into.

Speaker 19 (25:14):
Third and THEN i get up the fourth, time And
Gary carter's, catching and he, Said, dougie nobody's ever hit
four in a, game all. Fastballs and he threw One
Elias soso's, pitch and he threw it right down the,
middle AND i hit it a perfect one hopperty short
for a double. PLAY i Told gary later don't tell
me what's. Coming i'm doing. Better without, that you were

(25:37):
doing just. Fine they started bussing with. You after your
major league career wound. Down you got into, broadcasting especially
here AT, uk some with The. Reds also heavily involved
in a lot of, charities especially in recent. Years you've
done a lot of work and everything of The Reds
hall Of fame you've been involved.

Speaker 10 (25:54):
With.

Speaker 3 (25:54):
That just a fantastic. Career AND i think about your.
Journey if you could go back and talk to a
ten year Old Doug, flynn what would you tell him
and would he believe you when you told him what
all was going to.

Speaker 11 (26:07):
Happen it's very.

Speaker 19 (26:09):
Simple i'd, say listen to your father and do what he.
Says when it comes to, hitting there you. Go my
dad could, hit and he always told me lighter. Bat
and WHEN i signed, PROFESSIONALLY i had an open. Stance
and WHEN i got the pro, BALL i didn't have
enough confidence of myself or smart enough to say this
is what's got me, here because you, know the first

(26:30):
YEAR i hit two sixty. Eight THEN i hit two
eighty three at The reds and WHEN i got traded
AND i had somebody that wanted to change me a little,
bit AND i didn't have the confidence to, say you know,
What i'm, okay let me try my way first and we'll,
see BECAUSE i wanted to please new. Coaches but IF
i had to do it over, again i'd listened more
to my dad BECAUSE i found.

Speaker 11 (26:48):
Out later he was, really really a good.

Speaker 19 (26:50):
Player and he even came to me one time and he,
says you know, what he, said if you could have
hit like, Me AND i, said what about? Fielding he, Said,
nah think you got me on that. One you got
the Gold glove to prove. It, Yeah but he, was you,
know he was really a good. Athlete and if i'd
had HIS i won't say, cocky but his confident, demeanor

(27:14):
it would probably have served me a lot. Better but
be truthful with, YOU i think The Good lord knew
THAT i couldn't be a superstar BECAUSE i don't know
THAT i could handle. IT i see what goes on
in all these guys' lives and the stuff that said
about them on social media and the way they handle.
Stuff takes a certain person not only to be, successful
but to be able to be that successful and handle it.

Speaker 4 (27:34):
Well you may say you're not a, superstar but you're
A hall Of, Famer.

Speaker 3 (27:37):
So number one in our hearts and twenty three in your,
program say twenty three in the. Program advice for Any
kentucky kids growing, up big fans of The cats that
dream of playing here in any, sport.

Speaker 19 (27:51):
Just, play play and listen to you, know every chance you.
Got the year THAT i did not play in, college
so been myself more year in. COLLEGE i played inner,
MURALS i played. SOFTBALL i was playing baseball on the,
weekend SO i was playing basketball in the gyms in
the winter. Time SO i just continually. Played as a
matter of, fact HAD i not signed with The, REDS

(28:15):
i had already signed a letter of intended At Bethel
college In tennessee to go play.

Speaker 11 (28:19):
Basketball Coach Doug.

Speaker 19 (28:20):
Hines was, there and after my first year of pro,
BALL i was a little, frustrated And Russ nixon, said
you need to give it one more. Year AND i
asked him, LATER i, said what did you see that
you THOUGHT i should stay another? Year he, said the
things you were doing defensively were already big. League now
we just had to work that into the rest of your.
Game and you, KNOW i didn't know, that But i'm

(28:40):
Glad i've always had those kind of encouragers in. There
SO i would encourage people to tell your kid to
play and tell, him you, know to find somebody to
look at and. COPY i, mean we all did. That
i'm not SURE i had to copy everything That elie
de La cruz does now with the chains and gold
and had on backwards and shirt tail out and all that.
Stuff but he's a great, talent, yes AND i think

(29:03):
with that talent there comes some, responsibility and SO i
would love to see, him you, know and maybe he
will because they say he's a great. Kid but you,
know just just listen and, play, play, play and you
don't have to have a coach tell you what to
do to get. Better find something that you feel like
you're struggling with, them find a way to get. BETTER
i used to throw a ball up the wall and
do all this. Stuff so that's another, Show.

Speaker 3 (29:25):
Matt WHEN i sit down and talk ball with, You,
doug twenty minutes just flies. By thank you so, much my,

hall of famer and we're going to stay golden on
this show Because goldibors joins us From Kentucky Women's. Golf

Speaker 12 (33:09):
It was really good actually maybe. Laugh, so, yeah you're. Good.
Thanks WISH i was A hall Of.

Speaker 3 (33:14):
Famer, yeah well give it.

Speaker 12 (33:16):
TIME i, WILL i, Will i'll get.

Speaker 3 (33:18):
There this is your fifteenth season right at Uk.

Speaker 12 (33:21):
OR i believe it's sixteen. SIXTEEN i just, YEAH i finished.
Fifteenth mitch ask me that the other day, Too he's,
like how long have you been with? Me? NOW i,
said this is my sixteenth. Season, yeah it's crazy to think.

Speaker 3 (33:32):
About, yeah and you've got an exciting team this. Year
finished third out of twelve teams up In Grand, Haven
michigan at The folds Of. Honor what impressed you most
about your golfers in that.

Speaker 4 (33:43):
TOURNAMENT i think they're.

Speaker 12 (33:44):
Pois they handled the moment really. WELL i think how
prepared they. Were you, know you they come off the
summer and you have an, idea but you don't really
know until you get in that environment and get on the.
Course and there were some different thanks with this tournament
that added another level layer of intensity with the cameras
and all the signage and just the air of that

(34:06):
tournament with the folds of. Honor SO i was really
really pleased with their poise and their discipline in those.
Moments that was pretty.

Speaker 3 (34:12):
Cool, yeah so you had a great team, finish but
you also had some individual performances Like anastasia Hey, conan
who went wire to wire in a career high seven under.

Speaker 12 (34:21):
Par, YEAH i, mean blew our minds. Away she is
one of a kind. Man she struggled her freshman year
to kind of find her, footing had a great, summer
and she will tell You she's, like why Can't IF
i can be successful In, finland why CAN'T i be successful?
Here and that golf course was no. Joke it was

(34:42):
a very difficult jack nicklass. Design it played firm and.
Fast she had no three puts during the. WEEK i
mean she just played lights out and, yeah she was
there on a. Mission i'll leave it.

Speaker 3 (34:53):
There, yeah when you talk about these tough, courses how
much practice time do they get heading into these Turnam.

Speaker 12 (35:00):
So we got one practice, round so it was a
really long. Week normally it's not that, long but we
got one practice round and then we had an hour
and a half practice session the day before the. Tournament
we just got ninety minutes and then we went to
a little muni range after and hit some balls and.
Stuff but, yeah it was a pretty just a normal.
Practice we didn't get anything more than.

Speaker 3 (35:20):
Usual you Mentioned nastasia had a great. Summer what was
the difference for what made it?

Speaker 12 (35:25):
GREAT i think learning to. Win Getting obviously she's comfortable at,
home but one of our teammates asked her on the
car ride home and, said you, know do you think
it made a big. Difference did it help you to
have won those tournaments at? Home and she, goes, oh,
yeah because she broke some really big records In, finland
like she was the first player from her golf course
to win The Finnish amateur and stuff like, that and

(35:46):
so she was super. PROUD i, mean she's just beaming with,
excitement and, YEAH i think that made a huge.

Speaker 3 (35:52):
Difference Catherine brown flirted with a top five finish, individually
BUT i think the thing THAT i circled in my
notes is she improved her score each day en route
to that. Finish, yeah she.

Speaker 12 (36:03):
Got her putter movement a little so again after the first,
DAY i, mean we really could have been leading the
tournament if you're looking top to bottom of how we
played that, day And Hannah stasia's round helped us a
great deal knowing that we had a lot left in
the tank and knowing that we counted in eighty and

(36:24):
things like, that so it really motivated us the next
two days to improve and we did that last round for.
Sure But catherine it's just a matter of time before she.
Wins AND i would say the same thing For Carly.
CAMPBELL i know she didn't have the greatest, week but
it's just a matter of time and watching c a
that weekend two and seeing her mature as the tournament went,

(36:47):
on and being with her in the fairways and. Stuff
it's it's going to be an exciting.

Speaker 3 (36:51):
Year for, sure well and For catherine. TOO i know
this year she's she's playing for a little more besides
the name on her jersey and for. Herself she's carrying
a little more this.

Speaker 12 (37:02):
Year, yes she, is AND i think she does that
every year With, colin and she's always reminding, us and
we talk about him a, lot you, know and she
shares that very, willingly AND i think she's very proud
of him and knows that he's with her literally all the.
Time her family travels a lot with. US i, mean
her grandmother was out there. Walking they didn't have any,
carts so she was out there huffand being, Great and you,

(37:23):
KNOW i think it really hit home for. Everybody, again
they had the tops thing right like at one, o'clock
you stopped and it was really kind of meditational and
you just stopped for a minute and you were just
with your thoughts and you, know wherever they, Go but
that was a pretty neat moment. Too and, Yeah colin's
always with.

Speaker 4 (37:42):
Us, yeah absolutely.

Speaker 3 (37:44):
Absolutely and you, know with the lineup overall pretty, Young
you've got a junior and what four sophomores that were
in the lineup up In. Michigan so tell me a
little bit about what you're seeing out of a young
team and having already some top. Finishes, YEAH i.

Speaker 12 (38:00):
Think they grew a lot from last, year the experiences
that they had or didn't have last, year and it
really fueled them to get after it even more this.
Summer we were very clear at the end of the
spring of what our expectations are where we want to.
Go they all have their individual swing coaches and things like,
that and they've all worked at, it and they just
came in, really really hungry and. Motivated and we've talked

(38:23):
a little bit about being more intense in practice and
a tournament is not that we, weren't BUT i think
you can always step that. Up and then also carrying
On mitch's message of every tournament is an. Opportunity every
round is an, opportunity and there's also a responsibility that
comes with, that and so we will be prepared to
handle whatever the moment asks of. Us and, yeah they're,

(38:44):
young but they're very.

Speaker 3 (38:46):
Seasoned at the same, time when you AND i sit
here and talk about all the new things in this
modern age of college, athletics one of them is more
exposure for just about every collegiate. Sport and you guys
were able to compete on The golf.

Speaker 4 (38:59):
Channel that's some great exposure right.

Speaker 12 (39:01):
There, yeah that's pretty. Cool, now that was pretty. Cool
it wasn't anything that we. Addressed you kind of let
them take it in and the cameras are. THERE i
try not to make it a huge. Deal but of
course parents and families are like we saw you ON.
Tv you, know they get excited again the discipline and
like they all handled it in different, ways BUT i

(39:22):
always try to keep eye contact with, them make sure
that they were focused on the task at. Hand you,
Know raley had a moment where she was she had
a six iron into eighteen and she flirted it a
little right AND i mean it went in the water
and those cameras were like right on her and it
WAS i mean it's. Hard she's, nineteen you, know and
they're trying to get that dramatic picture video. Whatever she

(39:43):
handled it very, well and, yeah it was really good
because that's what we're going to face AT secs and
at The darius and everything like.

Speaker 3 (39:52):
That so it was. Great, WELL i want to talk
to you about your overall schedule coming up in this.
Interview we'll have to hit a break here in a,
minute but you mentioned the s he. Sees what does
the conference look like this year in terms of. Competition,
oh it's always.

Speaker 12 (40:03):
HARD i mean it never it never lets. Up so
we just we have to compete and we have to
be in it every week and just learn to learn
to beat them and understand that we're just as, good
if not better than most of those, teams but.

Speaker 3 (40:17):
Showing a commitment To Kentucky, Golf kentucky has renovated your
practice facilities and given you some great avenues and resources
to help these players get.

Speaker 12 (40:26):
Better, yeah this was really the next step for. Us
so you, know our facility hadn't been touched in a
really long time and it needed an, upgrade and so
that will help us a ton of. Recruiting more, importantly
it's going to help us continue to develop the players
that choose to come. Here you, know they invest in
coming here with their, games and we want to invest
that in, them and so this facility is going to
be super.

Speaker 3 (40:46):
Helpful one of the THINGS i understand is a variety
of grass is now. Available how big is that?

Speaker 12 (40:51):
Huge, yeah that's been one of the pieces that we've
struggled with is we have some of these girls that
really used to bent and then we get to thick
bermuda and bermuda greens and they have a tougher time
reading the, putts seeing the, green feeling, it things like.
That so we're really pumped to be able to hit
some different shots out of that and also get better
at hitting awkward lights with our pitch shots and chip

(41:14):
shots and, wedges and, yeah it's going to be really really.

Speaker 3 (41:17):
Good, YEAH i saw that you also have the space
for chipping and pitching and. Wedge AND i can't hit
a driver worth, anything But i've always been accurate with
a pitching wedge for some.

Speaker 12 (41:27):
Reason you need to come take some lessons With Katherine.
Brown she has hit it like three, fourteen so she
won the long drive. Contest oh she was amped. Up
she was amped.

Speaker 16 (41:35):
Up.

Speaker 3 (41:35):
Yeah, yeah bet we're chatting With goldabors here ON bb
And ready over presented By Clark's Pumping. Shop and you
mentioned you had the big. Summer of Course Catherine brown coming.
Back she was Sec player of The week class, Spring
but so Was Carly, campbell who qualified for THE Us
Women's amateur over the.

Speaker 12 (41:51):
Summer, yeah this guy's the limit for that, kid like
she just is a raw, talent comes from a great
golfing family kind of and and just loves the game
and wants to be as good as she can possibly.
Get her sister plays AT Eku and, yeah THAT'S i
think is going to be a really good thing to
be a little closer to, family and, YEAH i look
for her to have more of a breakout year. TOO

(42:12):
i think we saw a little bit of that in
the spring ad some. CONFIDENCE i mean she's again speaking of.
Maturity they're, Sophomores they've learned so.

Speaker 3 (42:20):

Lunation final segment OF BB And radio presented By Clarks
Pumping shop for this Week. Again kentucky football off this,
weekend but they will be on the road In, Columbia
South carolina against the Game cocks Next, saturday so they're
back INTO sec. Play but right now we're continuing our

(47:21):
chat With goldenbors From Kentucky Women's. Golf they're going to
be In missouri a week from, today a two day,
tournament all day events both. Days tell me a little
bit about what you expect when you take the trip To.

Speaker 12 (47:34):
Como you, KNOW i have never, been SO i can't
expect to learn something new About. Missouri WHAT i can.
Expect my assistant has been well and he's doing a
tremendous job of scouting the golf. Course it looks like
it's a course that's going to fit us really. Well
fairly wide off the, fairways even though we hit it pretty.
STRAIGHT i think big, greens which suits, it which suits

(47:56):
us well as. Well we're a great ball striking. Team
it's just going to be a matter of if we
can execute and make those birdie, putts AND i think
we'll have an opportunity to shoot some low.

Speaker 3 (48:05):
Scores, COACH i was looking at your schedule for the,
season AND i know there are schools that host these,
tournaments BUT i was more looking at the course you're
playing on in the, cities and you're going to some fantastic.
Places Hilton, Head, Wilmington, Augusta Boca, Raton. Sarasota you want to, Come,
yeah let's let's do. It i'll come with. You, Yeah i'm.

Speaker 12 (48:24):
Out, yeah you're more than welcome. To, yeah we have
a GREAT i, mean we have a great.

Speaker 3 (48:29):
Time i'm Sure cammy'd want too as, well probably for
helping us get ready for this. Interview but in terms
of these different, courses you're going to see across the.
Southeast how do you try to put your schedule together
to prepare your team for NCAA's and secs and give
them a variety as.

Speaker 12 (48:46):
Well we try to go back to some of those
staple events Like Bruce chris we've been to for a few.
Years love that golf, course love the. Area i'm good
friends with the coach. There and Land fall is a
new one for our team that this team hasn't been,
to BUT i have and it's just again it's a,
wonderfully wonderfully run, tournament very. PROFESSIONAL i. Think we also

(49:08):
try to sprinkle in some events that you, know we
haven't been, to like The joni i'ms this. Weekend also
to get to see some teams that we haven't. SEEN
i like going To florida early in the. Spring so
The boca tournament is on a golf course that provides
us an opportunity again to have some good scores potentially
for put ourselves in. Position we Enjoyed sarasota a great,

(49:31):
deal so we're going back. There they have a huge
ACTUALLY uk alumni group In, sarasota so they took very
great care of, us and so we're excited to go back.
There and then we've Added maryland something closer to to
help us prepare a little bit for. Secs like you,
SAID i don't know much about that golf course, yet but,
AGAIN i think that's going to be a nice. Trip
we're going to get to visit the capital and all

(49:53):
that kind of good. Stuff but we try to get
a mixture of some harder courses to prepare us. For
obviously in The National Championship, regionals we don't really know
where we get. Sent but then also taking them to
the north The, south so you get all weather. Conditions,
yeah that's what that's what we try to shoot for as.
WELL i want them to see the best teams in the,

(50:14):
country AND i also want them to learn to.

Speaker 3 (50:15):
Win going back to your, team we talked about some,
individuals BUT i wanted to tie in.

Speaker 10 (50:24):
With.

Speaker 3 (50:24):
RALEIGH i know she's we talked About catherine's playing for.

Speaker 4 (50:28):
More raleigh is.

Speaker 3 (50:28):
Too she's honoring her hometown Of curvelle throughout the. Season
she's got THE i think it's a green ribbon and
some names on her bag and all that. Stuff can
you tell us a little bit more About, yeah so she.

Speaker 12 (50:40):
She lost some dear friends in that and it really
shook her and her family to the. Course she lost
her golf coach from her when she played junior, golf
and so, yeah that was that was really. Hard and
she's very kind of stoic too in her, ways and
she's handling, IT i, think very. Well but it's it's

(51:00):
certainly a very important, thing and she's very proud of
her town and loves that, place and so, yeah that
was really.

Speaker 3 (51:06):
Hard yeah for the folks who might not Know kervil's In,
texas it was one of the towns affected by those
severe floods over the. Summer and when you think about
what golf requires to succeed and the motivation that some
of these young ladies, have mental toughness and, CONSISTENCY i,
mean it's just going to be fun to watch them

(51:27):
compete this.

Speaker 12 (51:28):
Year, yeah it's going to be really. Good and you
can see them growing right in front of, you you,
know if you follow the, team seeing them from the
heartache of last spring to what they're doing now and
the excitement and the, confidence and, yeah it's some pretty
pretty cool. Stuff AND i didn't, REALIZE i Asked rollie

(51:48):
bringing it back to, her she had been to that,
camp so It, yeah so it hit home even. MORE i.
DIDN'T i didn't know, that and SO i asked her
AND i, said did you ever? Go and she, said,
YEAH i was there as a. Kid so it's a
very popular thing. Too but, yeah bringing it back to it,
again you're seeing you're seeing the, growth AND i think
this sophomore class can be really really. Special and Obviously

(52:09):
catherine's on a wonderful. Track we got some girls on
the team that haven't quite broken out, yet but, again
we got great leadership within the, group AND i think
it's just a matter of. TIME i love how competitive
this group.

Speaker 3 (52:22):
Is it's c A. Carter it's really fun to go
back and, look third Generation Kentucky wildcat or dad played
football here in the early mid. Nineties.

Speaker 12 (52:29):
Yeah, oh they are Proud. Kentucky yeahs are really Proud
kentucky folks on our. TEAM i love. IT i, mean
they are decked out and they were with us up
In michigan and they're just beaming with. Pride you. Know
they had the team. Over so it Was anastasia's birthday Last.
Friday they had the team over celebrated her as kind
of a tradition now cooked steaks and all that good,
stuff and they just it's a, family and THAT i

(52:51):
think is sets us apart when you.

Speaker 3 (52:54):
Are putting together your rosters in terms of, Recruiting how
does a player In finland or a player in maybe
The Pacific coast or, wherever how do they get your?
Attention how do you find?

Speaker 12 (53:08):
Them how DO i find? Them it starts going to
junior events and as they are younger players coming up
and seeing how good they. Are, yes we look at,
rankings but it's not everything that we look, at but
trying to figure out if it's a good fit for.
Us we try to find really motivated players that fall
in love With. KENTUCKY i think that is super, important

(53:31):
that have a passion for our school and that want
to be part of our journey long ways to. Go
within our women's golf, program we've broken a ton of
records and there's a lot that we want to keep.
Breaking so we talk a lot about breaking glass ceilings
and we try to identify those players that want to
be part of that journey with. Us and so THAT'S
i go all over the country and all over the,

(53:52):
world and so Does will And julie and we just
try to find that fit that want to be part
of this and that buys into our. Culture that is
a huge part to what we, do and and we
try to look you, know we look at it through
a lens of our values And mitch's values and find
those players that have the skills obviously on the golf,
course and that's usually a pretty good.

Speaker 3 (54:13):
Fit you Mentioned. Julie she's new, staff, Right.

Speaker 12 (54:16):
Yeah she. Is she's a rock Star.

Speaker 3 (54:18):
Illinois, yeah, yeah so She.

Speaker 12 (54:22):
I'm known about her and had never met, her and
obviously When emily got the job At, maryland we were
super excited and proud of, her pretty. Interested or she
has family In bartstown and she is a phenomenal player
and brings a ton of experience at a very high.
Level she's a Fellow scandinavian like, Me she's From. Norway
so we hit it off pretty. Quick and, yeah it's

(54:44):
been it's been. Wonderful she's really clicking with the girls
and introducing some new stuff and practice and really a
great just a great. Person.

Speaker 3 (54:54):
Really, yeah, coach we just have a couple of minutes
left in the, show and one QUESTION i wanted to
get to was that potential transition THAT i know all
golfers aspire, to and that's to get to the pro.
Leagues how does competing collegiately help prepare you for that
mental grind and consistency you have to have to succeed
in the.

Speaker 12 (55:13):
PROS i think it helps them a great. Deal the
transition is going to be, how you, know doing your
own travel schedule and figuring out the tournaments and things
like that that you're going to go. To BUT i
think the intensity and our practices and how we go about,
things the discipline that we try to teach, them helping
them plan out their, schedule those are the things that

(55:33):
having tough, practices those are the things that they can
then rely on and lean. Into Lady fry's done a
wonderful job and hopefully she'll be able to grab her.
Card she's pretty, close And jensen's out there, grinding And
marissa's incredibly. Successful those are some of our former, players
and you've Got maria In. Europe BUT i think we
try to prepare them by challenging.

Speaker 3 (55:53):
Them yeah, yeah, well And i'm sure. Too even though
it's a team, sport there's individual competition within that, team
and so you have to battle that mental pressure of, oh,
MAN i need to make this shot to help my,
team but also to help.

Speaker 11 (56:05):
Yourself.

Speaker 12 (56:06):
Yeah, yeah and they, Would and don't get them, wrong
they're very competitive when we're you, know in, qualifying they
want to beat each other and then they're really good
friends after and.

Speaker 14 (56:14):
They can the.

Speaker 12 (56:15):
Team it does help the. Team AND i don't know
if we have the, time but But harley really sacrificed
for us at the tournament and she wasn't counting And
will was in the fairway with her and just, said,
hey if you can hit this, close it's a two
shot swing with an, eagle and she's, like, okay, COACH
i got, you you, Know and it didn't work out that,

(56:35):
way but that's a great learning. Moment and it also
showed her teammates what we're able to do as a.
Group and the next time she's going to execute the,
shot make, eagle and we win the. Tournament so it's
a pretty cool we're learning a.

Speaker 3 (56:48):
Lot, well, coach we appreciate you taking some time with.

Speaker 12 (56:51):
US i appreciate you guys with. Us, yeah thank.

Speaker 3 (56:53):
