is coming home to Kentucky.

Speaker 3 (00:54):
Now your host Tarren Hendrick.

Speaker 4 (00:59):
Good evening, everybody, Welcome into Clark's pumpins Shot BBN Radio.
Darren Hendrick with you. We've heard from Mark Pope, and
we've heard from Coach Peterson sitting in for Kenny Brooks
this week on the Bluegrass here in clinic Kenny Brooks Show.
And now we turned the page and I feel like
we've got the BBN Game Day crew with us tonight.
That's on Saturday mornings. Start part of it.

Speaker 7 (01:21):
Yes, that's it.

Speaker 4 (01:22):
Christy Thomas, and Keith Farmer, who's also on BBN tonight.
Through the magic of radio and television, Keith is actually
on TV right now.

Speaker 7 (01:30):
On radio, so it's just that good.

Speaker 1 (01:34):
Yeah, and Darren will be on Shorty as well, so yeah, yeah, well.

Speaker 4 (01:37):
Good doing two things at once. Well, let's go ahead
and start with basketball, since we've heard from coach Pope
and Coach Peterson, we'll lead off with the women's basketball
team because Georgia Amore forty three points a win at Oklahoma. Christy,
I know you saw this team a lot through the
non conference, you followed him through SEC play. Easy to say,

(01:59):
George just probably the best player we've seen come through
here since Ryan Howard wore the number ten jersey. I
would think, well.

Speaker 8 (02:05):
And I've yes, well, but and listen, I've told people,
you know, on multiple shows and anybody that wants to
listen to me talk about women's basketball.

Speaker 7 (02:15):
Georgia Aymore is worth the price of admission.

Speaker 8 (02:17):
So whether you see her play in person or even
on television, pay attention because she is a generational type
of player that you just don't see very often, and
you have to love everything about her game. It's not
just her ability to score, it's her ability to pass
and facilitate. It's so many things that that I love
about what she does. And there's so much to learn

(02:38):
from her. So, you know, I say, anybody that's got
a young player that has aspirations, it doesn't girl or boy,
it doesn't it doesn't matter. There there's so much to
learn from her, and she's just so much fun to watch,
and so I've said, you've got to now's your chance.
I mean, because listen, it's fleeting, it's going to be
over in a heartbeat.

Speaker 1 (02:55):
Can I tell you what I love about her is
the fact that we talked earlier and I was like,
why didn't she do this against you know, Queen's or
some team like that. You know, she's gotta easily jacked
up and scored forty three there probably, But that was
earlier in the season when she was trying to figure
out this team and trying to make the other players
better and trying to figure Now it's like, okay, now
we know what we are and forty three is not

(03:16):
gonna happen every night, but every once in a while,
she's gonna catch fire, and hey, okay, I'm feeling it.
I'm gonna keep shooting it.

Speaker 7 (03:22):
It's pretty remarkable.

Speaker 4 (03:23):
Yeah. And it wasn't just I'm going to go out
and score forty three points. She had eight assists. So
it was in the flow of the offense and she
was keeping her teammates involved. But it was like I'm open,
I'm not missing, I'm shooting it, she said.

Speaker 8 (03:36):
Shots that's never unusual for her. I think that's the
thing that I said. If you look across her stat line,
anytime you see you know where she's got twenty plus points,
she almost always inevitably has anywhere from eight to ten assists.
So I said, it's incredible to think about someone who
can find their shot but then also facilitate for other
people that effectively across the board that you kind of

(03:57):
pack that stat line to go wow, I mean, and
I think that's why it has to be fun about
playing with someone as a teammate, Georgia Amore, being your teammates.
You know, when I pass her the ball, she's going
to hit it, or when she passes me the b
It's just this whole thing that is just really working
for Kenny Brooks.

Speaker 4 (04:12):
You know what, Kentucky, We've heard the one and done
phrase over the years. She's the ultimate one in right
now with the way.

Speaker 7 (04:18):
She hurts my heart.

Speaker 4 (04:19):
Yeah right, Coach Brooks says, I'm searching every day.

Speaker 7 (04:23):
Yeah, let's figure out about what's right. We'd be thankful
for the one.

Speaker 4 (04:25):
Coach Brooks was joking last week. He said, I'm searching
every day to figure out a way to get her
another year. But going into Oklahoma, here's the stat that
jumps out. She and sec play Amore was accounting for
fifty two percent or more of Kentucky scoring between points
and assists, and then you throw in forty three points
at eight dimes, it's probably up to fifty three fifty

(04:46):
four percent of the scoring.

Speaker 8 (04:47):
Now it's incredible. I mean, and let me tell you
what I what I love about her game too. I
think when you when you watch her, and I actually
shared something that UK Athletics had had shared on social
media was a slow motion of her creating space. And
I think as at five six, which I said, I
think she's five six is generous, right, I mean, oftentimes

(05:08):
so she's not very big, but she has this uncanny
ability to create space and it doesn't matter whether it's
in the lane in traffic or whether it's a three
point shot or just a jumper or whatever, it is
like anybody I've ever seen. I mean, it's really it's
really something. So I said, when you watch something like
that happen in slow motion, you realize how incredibly talented
she is, but also how smart she is. And that

(05:29):
doesn't just happen overnight. This young lady works at it.
And that's another thing that I'm talking awful lot about
as well too. I mean, she puts the time in
the gym to be able to get that stuff done.

Speaker 4 (05:37):
No doubt about it. And as much as we talk
about Georgia Amore Keith, I think what makes this team
so good is their balance. We could spend another thirty
minutes on the front line with Clara and Amelia and
Tianni and then Deja Lawrence is quietly sitting there leading
the league in three point shooting. Nobody's talking about the
fact that she's the best three point shooter in the
league by percentage. So it really is amazing the balance

(05:58):
of this team.

Speaker 1 (05:58):
I love sitting down with her, probably about two weeks ago,
I guess it was, and it was right after maybe
the start of the SEC when she was really tearing
it up from the outside, you know. And uh, And
I said, what what happened? What was the change? What
flip for you? And she said, it's conference play. This
is where it matters. That's all it is. Yeah, right,
you know. And it was just like that, And and
that shows you the maturity as well of hey, this

(06:21):
is where we got to turn up. We got to
really play now because we're playing our conference teams.

Speaker 4 (06:24):
And then entering this year, they were so new. It
was a new program and all these new players were
coming together, so they were unknowns. And it feels like
people still are kind of waiting for a shoe to
drop with this group, and they have a hunger agree,
they have an attitude if we have something to prove,
and you could see that when they take the floor.

Speaker 8 (06:45):
Yeah, it's a chip that I think is one that
is needed, I think honestly to sort of be able
to do what they're doing, because to be able to
organically put that many new faces together on the court
and have them play together has to really be something
that is You can't force it, you can't really you

(07:07):
have to say, go figure it out as a coach,
I think, and you have to have mature players that
can do that, that are willing to do that, that
will sacrifice certain things in order to be able to
do that, And he's put the right group of young
ladies together to be able to make that happen.

Speaker 7 (07:21):
Because, like I say, it's not something you can orchestrate.

Speaker 8 (07:24):
It's not something you can sort of as a directive
as a coach, say you have to do this. Those
kinds of things happen organically, and that's when the goods,
that's when the magic happens really And then when you
know that, just sort of all of a sudden is
born and you're like, wow, look at this team really
play together.

Speaker 4 (07:39):
And look that we always hear about teams take on
the personality of their coaches. And Coach Brooks has heard
a few times like is this team ready for the SEC?
And he said, was the SEC ready for us? Yes?
And they have South Carolina, LSU, tennessee all that Texas,
all these teams in front of them, and everybody's like, well,
you've not played them yet, and Coach Brooks and this

(08:00):
team is sitting there saying, well, they've not played us either,
So let's go, let's go play. Let's not to love
about that this is what we came here to do.

Speaker 7 (08:08):
Yeah, oh totally.

Speaker 1 (08:09):
And I mean I love his attitude of that, the
verbo of you know, we're renting this visiting gem out
for the night, it's ours, all that stuff. I love
what he says, and he says it in front of
him that's out a press conference with at least one
next to him, maybe two. I'm sure he's saying the
same things in the locker room or on the practice court,
and it has to get them fired up.

Speaker 4 (08:30):
I love it.

Speaker 7 (08:30):
I love everything about it.

Speaker 8 (08:32):
But I'm like you, you know, I think, Darren, you
bring up a great point, is that sort of I
think people are kind of waiting for that shoe to
drop where you go, wow. I mean, at some point
something's got to go wrong, which is I think why
that North Carolina loss was so hard to take because
you thought, gosh, I mean they just didn't play well
and you thought, well, here it is.

Speaker 7 (08:46):
I mean, that's the shoe, you know.

Speaker 8 (08:48):
For me, that was the shoe that dropped because they
learned so much from that. Yeah, and they were really
able to kind of rebound and say, no, that wasn't us,
that wasn't who we are and then their one there.
You know, their sec loss was like, uh, they got
totally taken out of.

Speaker 7 (09:00):
What they doot they should shoot.

Speaker 8 (09:02):
Well, so yeah, it's not a big Listen, that shoe
goes right back on that foot when it drives.

Speaker 7 (09:07):
Yes, they picked it up. Yes.

Welcome back here on the Clark's Puppets Shop BBN Radio.
Here on the UK Sports Network, Darreon Hedrick joined by
Christy Thomas and Keith Farmer, And I want to switch
off basketball just a minute because softball begins this weekend
down in clear Water. Baseball begins next weekend in Nashville,
and I thought we'd talk a little bit of softball
because it is National Girls and Women in Sports Day,
And we've had a couple of girl dads on the

(12:00):
radio tonight, Mark Pope, Kenny Brooks and Josh Peterson. And
we have a young lady that her season is getting
ready to Is there ever an off.

Speaker 8 (12:08):
Season that's right, that's right. But the high schools around
Kentucky or trials are next week.

Speaker 7 (12:14):
It's there, you go, yeah, yeah.

Speaker 4 (12:16):
Well, Coach Lawson spoke at media day yesterday and she
gave a lot of I could listen to Coach Lawson
speak all day because she's just so reflective and intelligent
and really a fascinating conversation to hear her thoughts on things.
But there was one question she was asked towards the
end of and we're going to play the audio of
her answer. She was asked about the fact that she

(12:39):
really hadn't mentioned winning the SEC or making Oklahoma City
as a goal, and I thought her answer was great,
And here's part of it. We cut out a little
bit of it, but here was Coach Lawson's answer to
the talk about making it back to the Women's College
World Series in Oklahoma City.

Speaker 12 (12:56):
No, absolutely not. I mean, and Oklahoma City is where
you go, that's what you do. I want to also
win the SEC. I think I just didn't mention it
because honestly, I didn't. I didn't think about it from
the standpoint of I think this team is actually going
to be better than last year's team, even though we
don't know anybody, and we're not returning. I actually think

(13:18):
this team is going to be very good, and I
think somebody is going to be surprised. So either I'm
going to be very surprised and that really happens, or
the rest of the country is going to be very surprised.
I'm putting our focus right now. So here's the thing.
In order for us to go to Oklahoma City, We're
going to have to become better at communication. Our players

(13:40):
are going to have to get better at defense, which
is these are two things completely under in our control.
We have to get better playing together as a team.
So the past couple of years, I think I've done
a very poor job coaching in like past the COVID
era and the reason I think I've done a bad
job it's really hard to be loyal in today's day

(14:12):
and age. So in my attempt to stay loyal to
the people I recruited, the team took a step back.
I'm no longer going to be.

Speaker 7 (14:27):
That girl, so.

Speaker 5 (14:32):
I had to change.

Speaker 12 (14:36):
So with that said, I had to figure out number
one that my loyalty is to the Big Blue Nation.
My loyalty is to the University of Kentucky, and I
have to make sure that I set the standards at
this level, and any player who wants to live up
to that standard is great. But there were players that
I was allowing to live under the standard. They were

(14:57):
being entirely too selfish. And last year you really saw
it come to head because I tried to make it
mix and I couldn't. So I had young, really talented
players who are bigger, stronger, faster, who probably should have
been in the lineup all the time. And then I
had the older players that I was trying to be
loyal to and it just wasn't working. And to be

(15:22):
honest with you, nobody understands the deeply flex rule, so
the older players just thought I was messing with them
the entire time, where in softball you have a little
more flexibility to be a little more creative. In my
attempt to be creative and to make it all work
to be loyal at the same time as to try
to grow the program and keep up with the super teams,
I did a really bad job. Okay, so I'm not

(15:44):
going to do that anymore. So I'm going out. I'm
recruiting bigger, stronger, faster players. If that means I have
to look over players that I used to look over
that we spend a long time developing, or we've had
to do that recruiting because players don't allow you that
flexibilit anymore neither do parents. So the expectation is to
win and to win now. So I'm focusing on what

(16:06):
it takes to get back to the blue collar mentality,
true blue and we're gonna win.

Speaker 4 (16:13):
That's a really powerful comment there from coach Lawson, and
there was about a twenty six second pause in that answer.
We cut out some of that, but you could tell
the emotion that she spoke with. And we heard coach
Minjiones speak about kind of having a reset to his
program and we see what he's done. But Christy a
very emotional response and sort of a refocus there for

(16:37):
coach Lawson. I thought it was very open and real.

Speaker 7 (16:41):
It is, there's so much to unpack from that.

Speaker 8 (16:43):
From that that three minutes there, That is you could
have your own show just talking about that, honestly. But
number one, I think it's so refreshing to hear her
be so honest and open in a day and age
where coaches really don't and you know, I think that's
what people like and appreciate about Mark Pope as well,
as he's very transparent and honest, and she is not
typically known as someone who is that emotional. So to

(17:06):
see her and hear her get that emotional talking about
this tells you several things. One is what her character
really is is that she really did want to and
was trying to be loyal. That meant something to her
and meant something to her staff and that and that's
something that she was trying to honor. And she's right,
it is a different day and we're in a different
time when it comes to athletics in college athletics. So

(17:29):
you know, those two things stand out to me as
I listened to her talk about that. But now it's like, Okay,
what I love as well is that she understands this
is on me. I've got to turn the page now
and figure out a better way to do this because
we have to win and we play in one in
the most competitive conference in all of college softball, So
what are we going to do about it? And how
are we going to get there? So, you know, I

(17:50):
think that's in a day and age two where we
talk an awful lot about the transfer portal players that
do transfer, and I think especially in baseball, when you
say it's hard for young first year players to come
in and play somewhere, and she's saying, and I think
this is across the board as well too. If you're
good enough, you're going to play. I mean, just period,
that's how it is. And if you're living up to

(18:10):
our standard, you're going to play. I think from a
recruiting standpoint, I think about my daughter, Boy, that's exactly what.

Speaker 7 (18:16):
She wants to hear. She wants to hear.

Speaker 8 (18:18):
I don't care if you are a freshman. I don't
care if you are, you know, your first year. You
have an opportunity to play. If you do these things,
and if you can do them at a very high level,
then you have just as much opportunity.

Speaker 1 (18:28):
I just love the fact that here she is in
year eighteen twenty. Overall, I think, right, yeah, it's crazy
to think she's looking within herself and saying I need
to change this. That's pretty incredible. I totally still hear
that because we could just sit back and think a
coach is just maybe doing the same thing every year,
you know, right, you'd like to believe they're changing something,
but that drastically, that's pretty impressive.

Speaker 8 (18:49):
That's putting your ego aside, right, I mean, and to
your point, somebody that's been doing it as long as
she has and has had success that she's had, you
think they don't necessarily have that in them.

Speaker 7 (18:59):
So again, I think that just speaks to a character.

Speaker 4 (19:00):
And as softball is continuing to grow as a sport,
you're seeing the athletes get bigger, faster, stronger, more athletic,
and you're seeing a lot of times now these softball ballparks,
I mean, we're seeing home runs accidentally hit, yeah, a
long way because they're so strong and good. Yeah. We
got to get to our final time out here on

Final segment of Carts Pumping Shot BBN Radio. For this week,
we're chatting with Krysta Thomas and Keith Farmer of BBN Tonight,
BBN Game Day SEC plus UK Sports Network. They wear
a lot of hats WWL e x eighteen here at Lexington.
We're happy to have them with us. Spring sports have started.
We talked to a little softball in the last segment.

(22:55):
They'll get started in Clearwater this weekend. Baseball starts next
weekend in nash Field. Twenty nine new players for that team,
but they're going to play a fun, entertaining as coach
Benngione calls it, the win at all costs style. Who
would love to play in that kind of style.

Speaker 1 (23:12):
Out of the sport?

Speaker 4 (23:13):
Right, Yes, it's right, it's right. We've talked some women's basketball.
There'll be an action Monday night down in Oxford against
Old Miss. They'll host Texas next Thursday. February thirteenth. There
are some tickets still available for that. One would love
to see Memorial Coliseums sold out for a top five
or top ten Longhorns team when they roll in. Let's

(23:35):
talk a little bit about this men's basketball team. I
know that's on the mines of a lot of folks
after a tough night in Oxford last night, and obviously
the injury situation is kind of putting them handcuffed in
terms of what they want to do. We heard Coach
Pope talk about that earlier tonight, but they're not using
that as an excuse either. And I know that was
a really tough first half with some bright spots in

(23:56):
the second half last night.

Speaker 1 (23:57):
It'd be super easy for him just to say, you know,
we're know, and I think at times in post games
he's like close to same. But but you can't like
injuries happened to everybody. Everybody's getting nicked up. It's a
tough league and all of that. I love the fact
that they're just working through some things. You know, he
mentioned like the rebounding woes they had. They worked through that,
they had trouble getting to the rim and they getting

(24:20):
the fouls understanding that they've gotten through that. Now it's
the defensive side that they've got to really figure out
and figure it out quick, because you know, you've given
up thirteen three pointers back to back games, and some
of those were wide open. But you know, having played
the game, if you're wide open for the first few
and you knock them down, it don't matter who's on you, right,

(24:40):
I mean they could be draped all over you feel it, right,
So it's the early ones they got to be careful
of and figure out that defense.

Speaker 8 (24:46):
I think all this is to be expected to be
quite honest, I'm not one bit surprised that you sort
of hit the speed bump and you hit this bump
in the road. I think they've exceeded expectation. In my mind,
they've exceeded expectations already. They're better than and farther along
than what I ever would have an entirely new roster
would have been with a new coach and a new
coaching staff. So I am, I'm okay, you know, listen,

(25:07):
it's going to be okay. You want to, yeah, but
I think under the circumstances, you know, you just have
to understand, like these are some growing pains that I
think should have been expected by this team, and and
here we are and it's going to be okay.

Speaker 4 (25:22):
Yeah, when you look at the SEC, we got about
ninety seconds left in the show. But when you look
at the SEC, we've heard all year how good it is,
and we we see how good it is. The surprising thing,
and I hadn't even thought about this until it was
brought up earlier today, the amount of blowouts we've seen
in this league this year, Good teams playing each other,
and they went like what Florida did to Tennessee, What

(25:42):
Tennessee did to Florida, Kentucky's done to some teams and
vice versa, what Missouri did the Mississippi State. Is really
odd is we got a minute left in the show
to see as good as this league is, the amount
of blowouts this year, All.

Speaker 7 (25:54):
That says to me is is that the SEC Tournament
is going to be widow.

Speaker 8 (25:58):
It's being wild, because I think that that just goes
to show you you have absolutely no idea what's going on,
what's gonna happen, what team will show up. So I
think that that just means it's going to be more
fun than it's probably ever.

Speaker 1 (26:09):
Been kind of slow down games. We may see that
we're not used to seeing, right, because they've been all
running to go, you know, tournament time. It's there's fewer possessions.

Speaker 4 (26:16):
Well, there's no doubt about it. Uh, it is going
to be wild. And that Wednesday used to be two
games We're going to get a full day of that
stuff now. So it's it's gonna be awesome. Teams to
be competing on the Bubble Tournament.

Speaker 7 (26:29):
Going to be Yeah, that's so fun.

Speaker 4 (26:31):
Thought, well, this was a fun show. The half hour
flew by. We could talk Kentucky sports all evening, but
we're gonna give way for now and we'll be back
on our regular Monday night on the seventeenth. As we
got women's basketball next Monday. Christy Keith, thanks, we're having
