Hi.

Speaker 5 (00:47):
For the eighth time college basketball National Championship Trophy is
coming home to Kentucky.

Speaker 2 (00:53):
Now your host Tarreon Hendrick.

Speaker 3 (01:04):
From the performances of the hardwood on the basketball court
to the exciting routines of the gymnastics floor, we welcome
you into Clark's Pumping Shop BBN Radio here on the
UK Sports Network. I'm Darren Heddrick with you, and over
the next half hour we're gonna shift our attention to
gymnastics as the club is fresh off a second place

(01:24):
showing in the Sprouts Collegiate Quad event in Oklahoma City.
Kentucky with a strong performance on the vault helped propel
them to a score of one ninety six point five
zero zero, second best score behind UCLA, who won the
session event with a one ninety seven point five to five,
but Kentucky got the better of Arkansas and Ohio State

(01:47):
in this event. There were several sessions. Numerous powerhouse gymnastics
teams did their routines out in Oklahoma City, and Kentucky
was among one of the best. And they're also coming
off a record setting seat in last year, and so
we'll chat about all of that with Tim Garrison coming
up here in just a moment. Gymnastics is set for

(02:07):
their home opener this coming Friday, January seventeenth. It is
the soft opening of historic Memorial Coliseum as the Kentucky
gymnastics team hosts Alabama at seven o'clock Eastern. And with that,
we're excited to welcome onto the show the head coach
of Kentucky Gymnastics, Tim Garrison, Coach, thanks again for joining
us in congratulations and impressive showing down in Oklahoma City

(02:31):
in the quad event. What were your impressions of the
performance by your group down there in OKC.

Speaker 6 (02:37):
You know, I thought the thought the team handled the travel,
you know when all it's involved in that and seeing
up on a podium, which is different than what we
do and tell a championship segment. So it's nice to
have the you know, have that experience early in the season.
It wasn't a flawless performance by any stretch of the
imagination for us, But at the same time, I got
to tell you the grip that I saw from the

(02:58):
team and coming back, you know, we we had slipped
down to you know, the third place and fourth place
in the session and then the grit to fight back
get to get the second place. Love seeing that, never
a moment of team morale drop. Uh, never a moment
of of the you know, seeing that the fight at
waivering any way at all. So that's uh for for me,

(03:21):
that's that's good things looking forward to to the rest
of the season.

Speaker 3 (03:25):
I know the Vault session really catapulted your group in
the event. What did you see out of your team
that was the laser focus to get the execution they
needed on vault for the score of forty nine point
four five.

Speaker 6 (03:38):
Yeah, and the forty nine point four two five was
the last event that we competed, so you know, we
had come off of a floor rotation that was we
had some some great performances throughout the night. We had
great performances, and we had sudden we just struggled on
you know, first meet, things getting started things, you know
sometimes that happens, but but we really needed a strong
performance on vault to close out to meet, and that's

(03:59):
the exactly what happened, you know, especially our our last
three with starting with Isabella Magnelli having a huge vault
scoring a nine point nine two five, Mackenzie Wilson coming
up right behind her and in sticking her vault and
getting a nine point nine to five, and then you
had a freshman in her debut in the anchor spot,

(04:20):
which is not something that you would typically see coming
up last with the with the the strength of our
vault team, and she stuck her vault and had a
nine point nine five the catapult. So it's back into
second place and the head of Ohio State in Arkansas.
So it was it was an amazing rotation and great
to see to finish that meat strong the way we did.

Speaker 3 (04:43):
Coach, you always hear about momentum in sports, whether In basketball,
one shooter makes a shot, next thing you know, the
team is just rolling with shots. Or baseball, a hitter
gets a hit, the next guy gets a hit, next
thing you know, they've scored nine runs. What's it like though,
in a meat from your perspective watching your gymnast, when
one sticks, like you say, they stick their routine, and

(05:04):
then the next one executes, and you just see that
momentum build in a meat? What's that like for you?

Speaker 6 (05:10):
I don't I don't think there's any question about it.
You know, you've heard it said it's contagious, and that's
exactly what is.

Speaker 7 (05:18):
Uh.

Speaker 6 (05:18):
You know, one person performs exceptionally well, and that next
person feels like they're they're set up performed well, you know,
and they can they can they can compete more freely.
So I think I think that's what happened. What I
just described on ball, I think is a perfect example
of that. You know, and and and that that's one
side of things and on the other side of things.
It's very interesting, especially early in the season, uh, to

(05:41):
watch where we have momentum and there's a break and
then there there's there's a mistake made, and to see
what happens immediately after that, can you regain that momentum
that again, like I said, the meat morale or the
focus of the drive of that next person to be
able to go up and be able to compete with
that pressure on them. And that's another thing where where
give some some solid insights into uh, you know, into

(06:04):
the team team makeup. And I was very pleased to see,
you know, some examples of things when it didn't go
well how we responded this.

Speaker 3 (06:13):
Meet that you were in, this squad meet. In basketball,
they call them multi team events or mt s. There
were I believe three sessions of four teams in this event.
You mentioned the experience gain from competing in this, but
what about the exposure for your club to be in
an event like this where you have UCLA and you
have Ohio State and Arkansas and your team is a

(06:35):
part of that. What was that like to gain the
experience and the exposure of competing in Oklahoma City.

Speaker 6 (06:41):
Yeah, I think the exposure for the program is phenomenal.
Mean when you consider, you know, we're on ESPN too,
you know, a national TV meet, uh, and you know,
being able to get out obviously in front of a
crowd of that size in the building. But then obviously
that TV exposure, but then all sort of competing against
tough teams like that, it's all of it is is

(07:02):
great for experience for our especially our young athletes. You
got to you gotta understand, Darren, three three of our
of our four lineups that we compete, we compete six
on each event. Three athletes out of three of those
rotations vault, bars and beams, those are those are brand
new athletes in our lineup. For half of those lineups

(07:23):
are brand new for it. So h so to be
able to get out there and one compete against tough
competition like that, and uh, you know, on that national scene,
it's great for one exposure and it's it's great to
have our kids in that environment that way they get
used to that kind of pressure because guess what, we
live in the SEC and that's not going anywhere.

Speaker 3 (07:41):
We got to get to a break here in just
a second. But coach, I wanted to ask you about
what you just brought up, and that is I think
I counted you've got six freshmen and you've got six
sophomores with some experience in there, but still young. What
excites you the most about this young core that you
have built around your veterans.

Speaker 6 (07:59):
Yeah. That, and then we have two transfers also, you know,
so we have eight new people on this team, and
like said, a big, a big core group of sophomores
that you know, obviously showed their worth last year with
a competitive experience that they've gained and what they gave
this team. So now I'm excited. It bodes off for
the future, you know, the fact that the fact that
our sophomore class is so strong and uh and obviously

(08:22):
we've got a big senior class too, and then providing
a tremendous amount of leadership on the floor and in
the locker room. But our sophomore class is competing, you know,
at a very high level. Our freshman class is stepping
in and showing that their worth early. Also. It's just
exciting just to just to have another group coming through
the program that I feel, you know, based on based
on a strong preseason and based on what I saw

(08:44):
at that first competition, I feel like we're just we're
just able to continue building.

Speaker 3 (08:50):
Let's take a quick time out. We'll continue our chat
with head coach Tim Garrison of Kentucky Gymnastics, right after this,
you're listening to the UK Sports Network.

Welcome back into Clark's Pumping Shot. BBN Radio. We continue
our chat with Tim Garrison, the head coach of Kentucky Gymnastics.
They're coming off a second place showing in Oklahoma City
and getting ready now for the home opener Friday, January seventeenth.
It is the soft opening of historic Memorial Coliseum. Gymnastics
will compete against Alabama at seven o'clock and coach, first

(11:28):
of all, exciting to be home and back in the coliseum,
but also I'm sure your ladies are excited to compete
against the club like Alabama always.

Speaker 6 (11:37):
You know, we're starting our SEC slate. Naturally, we competed
this past weekend against Arkansas within the SEC, but be
able to get into a dual competition format and start
our SEC schedule, especially bring in a tough program like Alabama.
You know, they're number three in the country right now.
We're sitting at number eight. So yeah, we're excited to

(11:57):
bring them to town. We're excited to open up. I
know it's soft opening for Memorial coliseem for gymnastics, but
it doesn't have to be a quiet opening. We're excited
about it, and we hope it's going to be loud
rockets environment. It should be a fun night.

Speaker 3 (12:11):
Looking ahead to your schedule. I know your team can't,
but I was perusing your upcoming schedule. I wanted to
mention Excite Night. That's always a fun event. I know
the fans here in Lexington, Lovin and across the state.
But you host Auburn on Friday, January thirty first at
seven o'clock for Excite Night. That should be another fun
one as well.

Speaker 6 (12:30):
You know, and you know, I think our entire home
slate is going to be incredible. You know, we're bringing
in obviously Alabama this Friday, Auburn for Excite Night, you
know that's always that you said, a great night, and
then bringing in Temple, you know, non conference opponent LSU
Arkansas to close us out on Senior Night. You get
five opportunities from this point, now that we're through Blue White,

(12:50):
you get five opportunities starting with this Friday's night Nights
competition to see this twenty twenty five version of UK gymnastics,
and man, come out. You're not gonna be a You're
not gonna be disappointed. This is a this is a
good group. They're a fun group to watch, they're entertaining.
It's a ninety minute window. You know, you got to
you got an hour and a half to get in
there and just get excited about this group and have

(13:12):
yourself a fun night on on a Friday and tell
you what it's not to be mess.

Speaker 3 (13:16):
No doubt about it. Coach, and you and I always
talk about how competitive the SEC is. I wanted to
ask you, with the addition of Oklahoma now and you
travel to Norman in February, what does Oklahoma bring to
an already loaded conference for gymnastics.

Speaker 6 (13:33):
Yeah, well, there's just an incredible program. You know that
that staff kJ kJ Kimdler is the head coach there
in hers staff or just they're incredible coaches. They recruit
top notch athletes and you know, they compete at the
highest level. They've won numerous national championships, and they're going
to bring that well to you know, to the SEC.
So it was just a conference that was already you know,

(13:54):
arguably the best conference in the country just got better. So,
uh yeah, I was asked this past we can interview
what what do you what do you like about you know,
Oklahoma joining the conference? I said, well, truth be told,
I don't like anything about it because they're really really good.
But now they'll make us better you know, it's another
it's another weekend of competing against top notch opponents. And

(14:16):
and I think anytime you do that, the one you prepare,
you have to prepare well. And uh and too you
have to compete well, you know, and you're being helped
to a high standard. And they expect nothing less of
their program, and we expect nothing less of our program,
and we're excited to exceede against them.

Speaker 3 (14:32):
Coach, I think back to last year and having you
on the show a couple of times and and talking
about all the different records and high scores that your
team said and the great run they made in the postseason.
You have several of those stars back from last year,
a lot of experience back. What was the off season like?
And I guess maybe the momentum that these ladies had

(14:55):
in the off season as you were getting ready to
begin this year.

Speaker 6 (14:58):
Yeah, every season that you could bring everybody back and
every season's just different. But I tell you the fun part.
I mean there's a couple of people, obviously, with Rena
Warley not having her as a competitive part of our
team that has an impact. Bailey Bunn from last year
not having her in the locker room, that's such a
strong personality, and you know that leaves questions in your mind,

(15:20):
you know, what what is this going to be like?
But as we as we worked our way through preseason,
starting to lay it August when the kids got back
to campus, you know, and just and just sitting back
and just watching the team interact and interacting with them
ourselves as the coaching staff. It's been it's been very
enjoyable because again, you don't know what you're going to
get until you go through it. And going through preseason

(15:42):
and watching again, watching some of the leadership and those
two that departed the program, and obviously Randa Woody is
in our program as a coach now, but it's a
different role. You know, she's transitioning to a different role.
There's a void in the locker room. There's a bit
of a vacuum there, and I tell our senior class,
some of our sophomores really worked very very hard to
fill that boy and are providing tremendous leadership. So excitement,

(16:07):
you know, is a word that that's thrown around. But
just watching and being being in the gym and watching
the improvement that we've made and watching how hard these
kids are working and everything they put into you know,
representing the University of Kentucky in this athletic department, in
this city, and we're we were so excited about this,

(16:27):
about this season and growth.

Speaker 3 (16:29):
I was going, I'm glad you brought up Raina joining
your staff because I was going to ask you about that.
I imagine that was not a hard decision.

Speaker 6 (16:37):
Right, No, the only hard decision is the transition from
athletes to coach, you know, and and the relationship that
you have on the team. There. There is a transition there,
and that sometimes can be difficult, you know. And and
the only the only question I've ever had about, you know,
having somebody go right from athletes to that role is
can they make that transition? But the tremendous amount of

(16:57):
respect that I think that her teammates have for her
has allowed that transition to happen, I think, very fluidly,
very smoothly. And obviously we have a tremendous amount of
respect as our coaching staff for her and her opinions.
And she's come right in and you talk about immersing
yourself in a role she has. I've asked her to
do some very specific things, choreography being one, of them

(17:20):
to dances that you would see on the floor team
cutting music for those floor teams, some of the leads
and jumps and different components on floor. She has immersed
herself from that role. Really, if there's a way for
her to exceed my expectations, she's certainly done that.

Speaker 3 (17:37):
Chatting with head coach Tim Garrison, let's take a quick
time out one more segment with him. We'll be right back.

Speaker 3 (20:55):
Welcome into a final segment of Clark's Puppet Shot BBM
Radio for this week. As we're talking about the Kentucky
gymnastics team is part of our Spring sports preview. Head
coach Tim Garrison is with us, and of course gymnastics
has already started off their season. They competed in the
Quad event out in Oklahoma City, and coach, let's talk
about a couple of individuals. First of all, you have

(21:15):
some good returners from last year. You've talked about her,
Isabella Magnelly. How key was it having her on this
team and how has she stepped into a role this year?
A bigger role I should say.

Speaker 6 (21:27):
Yeah, well, okay, she's had a role in teams in
the past, and there's no signs of flowing down for her.
She's in her fifth year and she is competing at
at least the highest level she ever had she has
since being in this program. And her leadership is very vocal.
You know, if you're looking for you know, if our

(21:48):
team has gotten together and it's not me over there
pulling them together, it'll be Bell to pull them together.
So she's a vocal leader on the program, but she's
also she's the leader on the competition floor. I mean,
she presents herself really well on the floor, a side,
works herself back into a lineup position there. She's our
anchor on being and she's a big part of matter

(22:09):
of fact, she started that rally that we had this
past weekend on Vault. She's in her number four spot
on the Vault and she started that rally and helped
to close out that competition. So, whether it's it's her
being vocal or whether her going out there competing her
heart out, she brings it every single day. Not only
it's a competition, but she brings it every day in
the gym. You know, she comes in with a smile

(22:30):
on her face. She's just a happy person. She's fun
to be around. She does nothing but add to the
environment and to the quality of this team.

Speaker 3 (22:38):
And then you have a freshman. You kind of touched
on this in our first segment talking about Vault. You
had a freshman anchor the Vault. She was inserted into
the lineup just before the event started. But she came
home with a nine point nine five on the vault
routine and that was Anna Flynn Cashi And what did
you see in her to put her in that spot?

(22:58):
And then the way she performed.

Speaker 6 (23:00):
Well, that's the interesting part is that that we knew
she could perform it at a high, high level. But
we had a Skylar Skyler Killer Wilhelm, which is our
our fifty year transfer. She was actually in that anchor spot,
and we decided just based on the way the competition
was going, that we needed to make a change, and
so we decided to go ahead and put Anna Flynn
in there. So it was it was part of it

(23:22):
was knowing that the quality of that Anna Flint could
bring to the Vault lineup. Part of it was, listen,
we need to we need to have Skylar, Uh you know, Uh,
take take a step back and let's live to side
another day. And so we put her in there. And
I think her eyes are as big as dinner place
when we told her she was going on that anchor
sid uh. But but the performance didn't didn't look like that.

(23:43):
She she took it, and she took full advantage of
it and and said brought it home for the team
nine point ninety five and a h in a freshman debut. Uh,
I'll take it.

Speaker 3 (23:53):
Then, your sophomore class. I could go through each of
these young ladies individually Unfortunately we don't have that kind
of time. But uh, you know, athletes like Rodriguez and Rizzo,
And I don't want to leave anybody out, bros. I
don't want to, like I say, leave anybody out. But
you mentioned it's such a strong sophomore class this year.

Speaker 6 (24:13):
Yeah, i'd tell you Delaney Rodriguez, I don't think they're
there are enough words, uh to describe what she has
brought to this program in her very short career. She's
just exceptional. She's she's a she's an option on every
event and uh and as matter of fact, she wasn't
all around her this past weekend, so you know, and
that that's something where we split her into that vault

(24:33):
lineup and she was ready to go and she did
her job, you know. And so she she's she's just
an exceptional person. She's a great personality. Again, she's she
keeps it light, she's fine, she doesn't take herself too seriously.
She's very playful. She's just an enjoyable person to be around.
But man, you talk about the heart of a line
on the competition floor, Wow, I mean she breathes it
and you can count on it every time. She's she's

(24:55):
going to be there, she's going to feed her heart out.
And then, uh, you mentioned Cecily Rizone, you mentioned creston Bros.
Crestin Bros. You know, stepped up right after a you know,
a fairly shaky beam routine in front of her and
just absolutely crushed her beam routine. And then she goes
over to floor and is one of the most entertaining
floora tines that you're ever going to see. She's worked herself.

(25:17):
Matter of fact, we've been talking about Rana Warley and
Rena Woody was always our anchor on floor. Crestin Bros.
As a sophomore, has put herself firmly in that anchor
spot on floor. She is doing so well and performing,
not only performing, but tumbling. I mean it's a combination
of all that grace and all that performance with strong tumbling,

(25:39):
and she brings it every single time. She's easily an
All America candidate. So yeah, we're we're impressed by our
sophomore class and we're excited to see what they can
accomplish this year.

Speaker 3 (25:50):
Well, coach, we're excited to watch your team. Can't wait

Are You A Charlotte?

Are You A Charlotte?

In 1997, actress Kristin Davis’ life was forever changed when she took on the role of Charlotte York in Sex and the City. As we watched Carrie, Samantha, Miranda and Charlotte navigate relationships in NYC, the show helped push once unacceptable conversation topics out of the shadows and altered the narrative around women and sex. We all saw ourselves in them as they searched for fulfillment in life, sex and friendships. Now, Kristin Davis wants to connect with you, the fans, and share untold stories and all the behind the scenes. Together, with Kristin and special guests, what will begin with Sex and the City will evolve into talks about themes that are still so relevant today. "Are you a Charlotte?" is much more than just rewatching this beloved show, it brings the past and the present together as we talk with heart, humor and of course some optimism.
