Speaker 1 (00:48):
For the eighth time college basketball National Championship Trophy is
coming home to Kentucky.
Speaker 2 (00:54):
Now your host Tarreon Hendrick.
Speaker 4 (01:08):
The brackets have been revealed and March Madness is upon us.
And tonight on Clark's Pumping Shop BBN Radio, we hear
the reaction of players and coaches from both the men
and women alike, as they now know their destination and
their opponents for the first and potentially second rounds of
the NCAA Tournament. Good evening, everybody, I'm Darren Hedwick. We
(01:29):
welcome you into Clark's Pumping Shop, BBN Radio. And last night,
the Kentucky women's basketball team found out some great news.
They're a number four seed in the Spokane four Regional,
which means they get to host the first two rounds
of the NCAA Tournament. The Wildcats will begin tournament play
on Friday at noon Eastern against the thirteenth seeded Liberty Flames,
(01:51):
the champions of Conference USA. After finding out his opponent,
head coach Kenny Brooks sat down with our Michelle Kenezevik
on UKSN. All Access is part of the Selection Shows
special and Michelle got coaches reaction to the opponents and
the excitement of hosting the first two rounds at historic
Memorial Coliseum.
Speaker 6 (02:11):
Great when you know that you have the opportunity to host,
you know you have the opportunity to be in So
it take us a little bit away from the suspense.
But nonetheless, you know, it just really gave us the
time to reflect on what we really accomplished this year,
and it's, you know, short of amazing, just because the
way we put the team together, the way that they
came together, played in the toughest conference in the country,
(02:33):
had to finish top four, that's an accomplishment, but you know,
we're not done yet, you know, and this group is very,
very hungry, and they understand that they could continue to
grow and get better even though we're at the end
of the year.
Speaker 7 (02:43):
And that's what makes this group so special.
Speaker 8 (02:45):
I mean, you mentioned the SEC there for a second,
to see how many SEC teams got in to finish fourth.
I remember you told us you were a little anxious
before that first SEC game to look back and to
see where you are now and how well you did
in that conference, And now you're hosting.
Speaker 6 (03:00):
Does that feel It feels great because it just, you know,
it's a testament to our kids, their hard work, their
belief and not only us, but their belief in each other.
And they came together so quickly, you know, and the
leadership of Georgia uh and everyone else following suit and
then becoming leaders in their own right. It was a
very special year, very special and the way that they
(03:20):
came together, you know, just everything is like full circle
and you know, we're we're living a dream right now.
The dream's not over, but we're living the dream and
it's really fun to be a part of this group.
Speaker 9 (03:30):
How significant is it that you will be hosting in Lexington.
Speaker 6 (03:34):
You know, Lexington's basketball town, you know, and obviously there's
gonna be a lot going on this, Yeah, a lot
of basketball, but it's it's a basketball fans dream, you know,
they have two opportunities to watch great basketball. Men's women's.
Our men's team did a phenomenal job. They got a
three seed, and so you know, it's just it's a
wonderful time. It's a glorious times. It's March madness, and
(03:54):
for us to be a part of that, you know
that that makes it even more special.
Speaker 7 (03:58):
And to be able to be in this you know,
we didn't sneak in.
Speaker 6 (04:02):
You know, we were one of the top sixteen seeds,
and that just goes to show you when you have
that ability to be a top sixteen, you have a.
Speaker 7 (04:10):
Chance to win the whole thing. And so you know,
we're going to take it one game at a time.
Speaker 6 (04:13):
We have a great opponent in Liberty, but you know,
we're just so happy to have the opponent now and
then we can focus on an opponent and now we'll
go out and we'll just concentrate.
Speaker 9 (04:22):
What is this last week been like for your team?
Speaker 8 (04:24):
And then how do you now switch now that you
know who you're playing, What will you and your staff
do to get prepared.
Speaker 7 (04:29):
This week has been glorious.
Speaker 6 (04:30):
It's been glorious because we got kids and an opportunity
to rest. You know, we had a grueling end of
the year, which was very well documented. The tournament was grueling,
and then they got some rest and so we kind
of shot a little bit. We did some individual instruction.
We had two days with practice just so they had
their conditioning. But you can see each and every kid
(04:52):
they have a little bit more pop, and you know
they at the end of the year they would drag
in and we had to really hold them out of practice.
Georgia's had popped the last fear. She looks like herself
at the beginning of the season. Clara Stract has had popped,
Tiani Key has had pop, and so it's been really
fun watching them just get it back and then hopefully
we'll be able to sustain it and then just be
ready for a long run.
Speaker 8 (05:12):
The significance in having a point guard in Georgia who's
been to a Final four with you, You know how
beneficial is that as.
Speaker 9 (05:18):
You head into this run.
Speaker 7 (05:19):
It's very beneficial.
Speaker 6 (05:20):
Because we talked about it earlier and we had the
group group together and uh, you know, we told them
to relish this moment, you know, because it doesn't come
to everyone and each and everyone. I went around to everyone,
and no one has played in the NCAA tournament at
the role that they are right now. Clara Strack played
in the role and it was prominent because she had
to be thrust it into a situation. But Deja Lawrence
(05:43):
has never played in what the team that's expected to win.
Deanni Key has never played as a starter.
Speaker 5 (05:48):
You know.
Speaker 6 (05:48):
Georgia has been to the promised land, so to speak,
and so we're going to lean on her for her
leadership as we have all year long. But I think
everyone's really excited and with the understanding that, uh, we
have a lot of basketball left the play.
Speaker 8 (06:02):
As a coach, does it ever get old to see
maybe some of those players who are going to get
to experience this in a couple of days.
Speaker 6 (06:08):
No, it never does. And you know, I had butterflies
the whole time, and uh, you know, I just wish
they would announce us in the first bracket.
Speaker 7 (06:16):
I think that's happened to me half the time that
I've been in it.
Speaker 6 (06:19):
But you know, just sitting there and for me, it
gives me an opportunity to reflect and look back. And
I watched their expressions, I watched their excitement and that
and that's you know, as a parent, as a coach,
you know, it's like Christmas morning when you give a
kid or the best Christmas present you can ever give
them and you watch them open it up. And that's
what That's what it feels like when you watch them
and their name is called, and it's just, you know,
(06:41):
so many emotions go through your head.
Speaker 7 (06:43):
Uh, the six am runs, the getting up early, the sacrifices.
Speaker 6 (06:47):
You know, university is on spring break right now, but
we practice tomorrow and so so many sacrifices.
Speaker 7 (06:54):
This makes it all worthwhile. And uh, it's just really
fun to watch them go through that.
Speaker 4 (06:58):
And again, that was head coach Can Brooks with our
Michelle Knezevik on UKSN All Access last night, a part
of the Selection Show special. Kentucky again will be a
four seed and host the first two rounds of the
NCAA Tournament at Historic Memorial Coliseum beginning on Friday. Michelle
also was able to catch up with Georgia Amore and
she asked Georgia. If it ever gets old seeing your
(07:20):
team's name called and seeing that logo flash up there
on those NCAA tournament brackets.
Speaker 7 (07:26):
No, it feels really good, obviously.
Speaker 10 (07:28):
You know, upon reflection you realize, you know how special
it is to be in that situation, let alone to
be in a conversation of hersty So very lucky to be,
you know, in a position where we performed all year
round and put ourselves in the in the best position.
Speaker 8 (07:43):
First year in the SEC. So how many SEC teams
made it into the tournament? How do you think playing
in a conference like that has prepared this team?
Speaker 5 (07:50):
Yeah?
Speaker 10 (07:50):
It sets you up every single week. You know, you
take every single game like it's a championship game. And
you know that being in the SEC, with the ated
factor of it being so new for us, you know,
we had to take it that way because we didn't
know what to expect. So I think, you know, that
put us in a position to take every game seriously.
Speaker 8 (08:06):
So when you when you look at this team the
last couple of days, you haven't had anybody to prepare
for it, just because you don't know who you're gonna play.
You're gonna play conference usafe champions in Liberty. What if
maybe the last couple of days like Ben for you
as you as you gear up for this postseason.
Speaker 10 (08:19):
Then yeah, I mean it was good because for the
whole year we've been geared up to play someone. You know,
your your focus is always on someone else, and maybe
the focus for yourself isn't there as much as it
was for us. Particularly this last week, we really scaled
it back at a couple of individuals to get that
confidence back, and the last two games had last two
days had some good you know, scrimmaging opportunities and just
building it back up to be as you know, competitive
(08:41):
as we can be in this tournament.
Speaker 8 (08:43):
Have you guys flipped the page? Now that you're knowing
who you're going to play Liberty this weekend? You know,
how do you now gear up to play them, a
team that you haven't seen before.
Speaker 11 (08:51):
Yeah.
Speaker 10 (08:51):
I don't know if you heard, but they started up
pretty quick and said practice that too tomorrow. So I'm
assuming tomorrow will be very scout based.
Speaker 7 (08:57):
Obviously, you know, we.
Speaker 10 (08:58):
Haven't played the Liberty before. I've played Liberty personally, but
that was about three years ago, so you know, a
lot can change. But yeah, you know, you know your
opponent now when you're excited for it, then kind of
gives a goal in mind. You know, you know what
you're working towards. You know you don't want to be left.
You know, are we doing enough for this type of team?
You know exactly what you're going to get.
Speaker 8 (09:15):
Now you've played in the tournament, but to be a
part of a team with a lot of new pieces
and maybe some people who haven't played on a team
like this where you're a top seed heading into it.
Speaker 9 (09:25):
Is there anything you say to your teammates as you
gear up for this.
Speaker 10 (09:28):
You know, you can say what you want, or you
can try and give them as many nuggets as possible,
But you don't know what to you're in it. But
I think you know, we kind of went through an
SEC tournament, you know, you know, it's win or go home,
and there are plenty of opportunities for us to win
that game, and I think we should have. But learning
from that going into this tournament, I'd much rather learn
for this tournament.
Speaker 9 (09:47):
It's your last ride, your last tournament.
Speaker 8 (09:49):
What are you hoping to get out of this as
you kind of round out your last year of college basketball?
Speaker 11 (09:55):
Yeah?
Speaker 10 (09:55):
I mean obviously just to exhaust it. I think our
bracket looks good. I think you know the section where
in and the teams who are up agains, you know,
I mean I I back us any day of the week,
but particularly in that kind of area.
Speaker 7 (10:06):
So it's very exciting.
Speaker 10 (10:08):
But in saying that, you cannot get too far aheaded resels,
you know, you got to take that first game just
as serious kind to get your win under you when
and be prepped. You know, it's game by game. But
I've don't know worries about that because that's been ask
for this whole year. So I'm excited and I'm going
to take the win.
Speaker 8 (10:24):
What do you say to Kentucky fans? We're looking forward
to heading over to historic Memorial Coliseum. It's Friday to
see you.
Speaker 10 (10:28):
Well, how long has it been, Sinchil, I've gotten a
chance to do that, like make the most out of it.
Speaker 4 (10:34):
We'll hear more reaction from players and coaches on the
NCAA tournament selections and opponents coming up. This is Clark's
Pumping Shop BBN Radio on the UK Sports Network.

Number three seed here the first ever SunUp Player of
the Year.
Speaker 4 (13:48):
And there you heard the reaction as the Kentucky men's
basketball team found out that they will be a three
seed playing in Milwaukee in the first round of the
NCAA Tournament. They also found out their opponent will be
the fourteenth seeded Troy Trojans. So the Wildcats will play
on Friday, with tip off scheduled for around seven to
ten Eastern time in the evening and Kentucky will be
(14:12):
a three seed. They'll be opposite the Illinois and Xavier
or Texas game, So Kentucky will face either Illinois, Xavier,
or Texas in the second round.
Speaker 14 (14:22):
As part of.
Speaker 4 (14:23):
Our UKSN Selection Show special, Michelle Kenezevik was able to
sit down with Andrew Carr and get his reaction to
being a three seed in the tournament and the opening
round opponent.
Speaker 8 (14:34):
Well, a record fourteen SEC teams in the tournament this year.
Right now, I'm joined with Andrew Carr. I mean hearing
that you guys have played this SEC schedule all year long,
fourteen teams make it into the Big Dance.
Speaker 21 (14:45):
Yeah, that's probably a little more than I even I expected.
For sure, I knew how talented and how much of
a grind this league was every single night. So you know,
it just kind of continues to the history that this
league has has been able to accomplish all year.
Speaker 9 (15:03):
Kentucky will be the three seed.
Speaker 8 (15:04):
You guys will be heading to Milwaukee playing the Sun
Belt champion in Troy. You know, how do you begin
to even prepare for a team that maybe you've never watched.
What is that approach like and what do you think
it's going to be like with this staff and this team.
Speaker 5 (15:15):
You know, we're super excited.
Speaker 21 (15:17):
That's kind of the beauty of March mad as you
play against teams that you know, you you obviously don't
normally get to play against from a bunch of different conferences.
And so for us, we're excited, we're ready for the
for the challenge. We know, you know, they they won
their league and they're really talented team. So where we
don't take anybody anybody lately and and uh, we're excited
(15:40):
to focus on Troy.
Speaker 8 (15:41):
So you played a lot of college basketball, But do
you do you approach this week any differently? Is there
anything that you specifically do to get ready for a
moment like this?
Speaker 21 (15:49):
I wouldn't say anything differently, you know. I think the
coaching staff has just done an amazing job for us
all year, just trying to help us understand how how
important every single game is, how important every single day is.
And so you know, when your your perspective and your
mindset kind of changes like that and develops into that,
(16:11):
it allows you to really attack every single day the
same and not try and put too much pressure on yourself.
Speaker 9 (16:17):
Coach Pope said that you guys got good news on Lamont.
Speaker 8 (16:19):
Everybody really battling through injuries at this point in the year,
but but nothing worse for Lamont and then he'll be
able to play.
Speaker 9 (16:25):
You know how encouraging is that for you, especially.
Speaker 8 (16:27):
With knowing how important he is and just that he's
had to sit out a.
Speaker 9 (16:30):
Lot this year, that he'll get to play in moments
like this with you all.
Speaker 21 (16:33):
You know, he's uh, we're always running jokes, we're going
into Lamarch from March. I love that, right of course
it's his month, and so uh, just super excited for
him to be able to be out through with us.
Speaker 5 (16:46):
Man, he's a he's a.
Speaker 21 (16:48):
Warrior and and he you know, he'll lay it on
the line for all of us.
Speaker 5 (16:51):
And and uh it means a lot for us. He's
a big time leader on this team.
Speaker 8 (16:55):
Do you do you ever have a Do you have
a favorite March memory, whether it be as you're a
kid filling out a braw or anything like that.
Speaker 21 (17:01):
Yeah, of course, you know, I think for me it
was probably when Villanova won their championship.
Speaker 9 (17:07):
That's a popular one for sure.
Speaker 21 (17:09):
I from the area obviously, and I just remember jumping
up and down on my parents in my parents' bedroom
watching the game, staying up past my bedtime.
Speaker 9 (17:20):
So as you should.
Speaker 8 (17:20):
I can imagine a lot of young Kentucky fans will
be doing that for the same thing for this team.
Speaker 9 (17:24):
Andrew, thank you so much and we'll see in Milwaukee you.
Speaker 4 (17:27):
Thanks again to Andrew Carr for sitting down with Michelle
as part of our selection show special on uksn All Access.
Lamont Butler was made available to the media that we're
in attendance at the watch party, and he was asked
about the fact that he's had NCAA tournament experience, in
fact a great run to the final four, and what
(17:47):
his message to his teammates would be is they get
ready to embark on another journey through March madness.
Speaker 5 (17:53):
Yeah, just enjoying the moment.
Speaker 22 (17:54):
Honestly, you know, March Madness is something that we all
dream of, so, you know, not to be in a
pan and it just enjoy the moment.
Speaker 5 (18:01):
Play free, you know, play fun, play for each other.
That's gonna be. That's gonna be my main messages to
everybody for sure.
Speaker 21 (18:08):
Are there any similarities between that Aztec team a couple
of years back and this Kentucky team that you that
maybe would help to go on to such a run.
Speaker 22 (18:15):
One thing I'll say that similar is like the bond
that we have with each other. I f like Sanyo
state that year, we had group so close together. I mean,
we played for a long time together, but we had
a great, great bond. But you know, in this short
time here at Kentucky, we we've really you know, our
brothers now. So I think that's really gonna take us
far in the tournament.
Speaker 4 (18:34):

So go Cat to Pizza.
Speaker 4 (22:12):
Final segment of Clark's Pumping Shop BBN Radio for this week,
and a reminder when we're done here, stay tuned. The
Nick Mangeon Radio Show comes your way next at seven
point thirty and we'll talk Kentucky baseball as they get
ready for a five game homestand beginning Tuesday, March eighteenth.
That's tomorrow night, six point thirty against Murray State at
Kentucky Proud Park. Well, we continue gaining reaction from players
(22:36):
and coaches to March Madness. The brackets have been revealed
for both the men and women. The Kentucky Women will
get to host the first two rounds, being the number
four seed in the Spokane for Regional The Wildcats will
host Liberty the thirteen seed on Friday at noon Eastern.
Our broadcast time will begin at eleven forty five. Last night,
(22:58):
as part of the selection shows val on uksn All Access,
Michelle Kedezevik was able to spend a couple of minutes
with Clara Strack, and here is her conversation with the
sophomore out of Buffalo, New York.
Speaker 11 (23:10):
Yeah, I mean, I think that.
Speaker 9 (23:12):
That's an exciting problem to have, is just sitting there waiting.
Speaker 11 (23:15):
Obviously you're a little nervous still, like seeing like where
you're going to end up, like what the matchup is
going to be.
Speaker 9 (23:20):
But I mean I think overall, he's really.
Speaker 8 (23:21):
Exciting a huge opportunity that you guys get to host
here in Lexington and your home gym and historic Memorial Coliseum.
How how nice is that for you all that you
can have, you know, a similar routine and plan a
gym that you've played in all year long and been
very successful in.
Speaker 11 (23:35):
Yeah, I mean, I think it's super vice. Obviously, we
have our fans, we have the familiarness with the arena,
with we have our locker room and things like that,
small things, but I think that they'll make a big difference.
Speaker 8 (23:48):
You played in the tournament last year as a freshman,
but this year in your expanded role, how excited are
you to have a bigger piece, a significant role in
this team.
Speaker 7 (23:56):
Yeah, I mean I'm super excited.
Speaker 11 (23:58):
I think that I mean the team in general, we've
worked really hard for this and I think that everyone's
really excited. The energy has been different, energy has been
really good. So I'm excited.
Speaker 8 (24:08):
What is this last week then, Like you guys obviously
just found out they're going to be playing Conference USA
champion in Liberty. But what has maybe the last couple
of days been like as you prepare for this moment
and then now turn to focusing on Liberty.
Speaker 11 (24:19):
Yeah, I mean we obviously got some rests to past
week after obviously a long season tournament, but I mean
we got back at it a few days ago and
I think we've just been going hard getting ready, preparing
ourselves for anything.
Speaker 8 (24:34):
What has Coach Brooks said to you all as you
you know, prepare to play in this type of tournament.
You're a three seed, right, So you've had such a
successful season, but a lot of different pieces of people
who maybe haven't played in the tournament or I've had
different roles.
Speaker 9 (24:46):
What does that kind of look like.
Speaker 11 (24:48):
Yeah, I mean, I think just giving the message like
if you lose, it's over. So I think having that
in your mind, knowing that every game's going to be
a battle, because that's the same for every team, every team,
if you lose, it's over, so I think, and everyone's
going to give it their best shot obviously in play
as hard as they can.
Speaker 9 (25:03):
So I think you just have to have that mindset.
Speaker 4 (25:04):
Again, thank you to Clara Strack for joining Michelle Kenezevik
on our uk is In All Access selection show. The
women will open the tournament Friday at noon against Liberty
inside Historic Memorial Coliseum and again our coverage begins at
eleven forty five am. It will be a busy day
on the UK Sports Network Friday because the men will
(25:25):
also play. Around seven to ten Eastern is the expected
tip off in Milwaukee for the Cats and Troy and
Kobe Brea spoke to the media last night, getting his
reaction from the bracket draw and the excitement of being
a three seed, and Kobe was also asked about his
tournament experience. The Wildcats relying on some freshmen with key
(25:46):
playing time right now and so he was asked about
using that experience and the senior guys on the team
helping guide these freshmen along through March madness.
Speaker 25 (25:55):
Yeah, I mean experience as the best teacher, you know,
so a lot of us, we got a lot of
vetter in this group, which we're gonna be able to
take care of most of the low but our refreshments.
You know, they've done a great job of just you know,
growing up throughout the year and especially in the last tournament,
they really took some big steps and we're gonna, like
I said, we're gonna need everybody.
Speaker 5 (26:13):
So I know that when time comes, you know, they're
gonna be ready for you.
Speaker 14 (26:18):
Guys. Don't start on Friday. Ye a little beat up.
Speaker 5 (26:20):
Will an extra day help you guys? Yeah, definitely, just.
Speaker 25 (26:23):
Because you know, there's a lot of guys on our
team just dealing with some little minor injuries and just
the extra time you know, helps us, you know, get
back healthy and take care.
Speaker 5 (26:31):
Of not only our bodies, but our minds as well.
Speaker 25 (26:33):
And just had the opportunity to really look at what's
in front of us with Detroit team and just being
able to use every day wisely, you know.
Speaker 5 (26:41):
On the court and off the court, and I think
it'll help us out a lot. Made how we're dating
right now.
Speaker 3 (26:46):
Is it a little bit different playing for Kentucky this time,
knowing that you know, you're not a mid major and
you're guy.
Speaker 5 (26:51):
Is there a little bit more pressure coming.
Speaker 10 (26:52):
Into a game like this.
Speaker 25 (26:53):
I wouldn't say more pressure, really, but I think we
expect a little bit more out of ourselves, you know,
just kind of like last year, we were a little
bit surprised to you know, be able to make it.
You know, we didn't win our conference tournament, so we
kind of just like hoped throughout the whole time that,
you know, we were going to be able to make it.
So now we kind of knew that we was going
to be in and it's just about, you know, being
(27:13):
able to do what we know we can do. So
we know that we're a really good team and we're
capable of winning a lot of games in this tournament,
and that's what that's what we got to go out
and do.
Speaker 4 (27:22):
Brail was also asked about the fact that they wear
Kentucky on their chest.
Speaker 14 (27:26):
So what's it like being the hunted coming into the tournament?
Speaker 25 (27:30):
To be honest, I don't think anything changes for us.
I think we're still going to continue to hunt. You know,
it doesn't matter who we're playing against. We have that
other dog mentality, and that's why it's good for us
to you know, have these experienced.
Speaker 5 (27:40):
Guys that come from smaller schools.
Speaker 25 (27:43):
That's going to help us a lot, you know, because
we don't look at it like you know, it's a
mid major team, a low major team like for us,
this is another opportunity to you know, really be ourselves
and be the best version of ourselves and just take
care of business.
Speaker 5 (27:56):
You know, So underdog mentality for sure.
Speaker 14 (27:59):
Well there you have it.
Speaker 4 (28:00):
Brackets have been set for both the Kentucky men and
women basketball teams and they'll get started on Friday. The
women will play at noon, the men will play around
seven o'clock. The women a four seed, the men a
three seed. And what a strong SEC season it was.
We heard Michelle mentioned earlier in the show that the
SEC got fourteen teams into the men's NCAA tournament. The
(28:24):
women have ten teams in the tournament, including two number
one seeds, Texas and South Carolina. The women will be
in a Spokane regional with number one overall seed usc
and they'll also have Yukon as a two seed in
that bracket.
Speaker 14 (28:39):
But that's going to do it for us.
Speaker 4 (28:40):
Here on Clark's Pumpinshop BBN Radio, March Madness is here
