Speaker 3 (04:35):
Welcome back into the Bluegrass here in clinic Kenny Brooks
show here on the UK Sports Network, Darren Hendrick with
you as the Cats get ready to take on Alabama.
Big game for the Wildcats, and they've played themselves into
a spot where the games are more important each time
out for seeding and all that stuff long term. But
as coach likes to say, this next game is important because.
Speaker 1 (04:56):
It's the next the next game.
Speaker 3 (04:58):
That's right, it's the next game.
Speaker 1 (04:59):
It's important.
Speaker 3 (05:00):
I heard that message to your team today over and
over in practice. It's the next game.
Speaker 1 (05:05):
Yeah, and you know you can't. A lot of people
want to look down the schedule, look to February, look
to you know, postseason and whatnot. And if you're inside
it and you get caught doing that, you know things
can sneak up on you. So this group has done
a tremendous job of focusing on the task at hand,
and you only play one game at a time, and
(05:25):
they do a tremendous job of doing that, And that's
something I'm very very impressed with them. And if you're
going to be a good basketball team and you want
to sustain the success that you have, you have to
take it one game at a time. You can't overlook
anyone and every game is going to present different challenges.
So this group's gone a tremendous job of understanding that.
Speaker 3 (05:42):
Has this team do they talk a lot about because
of where they are at seventeen and two six and
the one in the league. Do they talk a lot
about the goals that can be in front of them
now with the way they've started out, or do they
just kind of go about day to day business.
Speaker 1 (05:54):
They go to about a day to day business. And
you know, after we lost to Texas A and M,
they were down. They would love down and out And
I had to bring up a quote by the famous
Bill Parcells, and I said, he said, you are what
your record says you are. And you know, at that time,
we were sixteen and two, and so we couldn't look
(06:15):
like the world it was over with or we had
lost sixteen in a row. We were a good basketball
team and so don't I don't know if they know,
you know, I'm sure they do, and they and they
look at it somehow, but they don't let it affect
what they're doing, how they're playing, and and that's that's
how they just you know, handle their success. And they've
done a tremendous job of it.
Speaker 3 (06:34):
Yeah, you and I talked a little bit before the
game Sunday against Arkansas how this team was unknown because
they were new to the league coming into this season,
and they still approach even now late January getting into
February with a hunger and every day they go out
with something to prove to each other and to the
rest of the league.
Speaker 1 (06:52):
Yeah, you know, they're smart. They're smart kids, you know,
and you know they understand everyone says, well, wait two
years such and such, wait till this game, wait to
that game, and uh. And the beauty of everything is
that we we have a very challenging schedule from here
on out. We understand that, and we know that we
play a lot of ranked teams. But the beauty of
it is that we're ranked too, yea and uh and
so that so that just means it's gonna be a
(07:14):
really good game. It's not a lost cause or it's
not okay, we're facing them in a row. If you're
in the SEC, you're gonna face ranked teams every week.
And you know, and that's just how good this league is.
So U the great part is that we're a part
of it. And uh, it's not you know, a situation
where you know we're not as good, we're at the bottom.
We're writ in the thick of everything. So those are
(07:34):
the challenges that you want what you signed up for.
And uh so we'll we'll go out and we'll compete
and give it our all. And as many challenges as
teams will present to us, we present those challenges as
well to them.
Speaker 3 (07:44):
As you watch the film of the Arkansas game and
went back to practice, what are some things that you
took from that game that you've been working on this week.
Speaker 1 (07:51):
Yeah, we shot the ball better. That was that was
point number one.
Speaker 10 (07:56):
Uh.
Speaker 1 (07:56):
But they shot it with a confidence and that's what
I was extremely excited about. And h they shared the basketball.
They they celebrated each other's successes.
Speaker 11 (08:06):
Uh.
Speaker 1 (08:06):
It was on full display Kentucky women's basketball on Sunday.
You know you saw them h having a good time,
they were playing hard. Uh, they played for each other.
And as a result, we came in with a good win.
You know, did we leave some stuff on the on
the table? We did, but but we got very valuable
minutes for our bench. Uh and they got some Lexei
Blue got to come in, ye Sanaia Tyler. You know,
(08:27):
I'm I'm tickled with She's done a tremendous job as
of late, uh to work herself into the rotation. And
uh so we got some very valuable minutes from our bench.
We're gonna continue, We're gonna need that, you know, throughout
the season. And uh so I thought those kids were
able to produce for us, and uh but all all around,
it was smiles everywhere, and everybody stepped up. Played well.
Georgia was Georgia. Claire Strake, you know, played well, had
(08:49):
a good bounce back game, uh from the uh from
the Texas A and M game, and so it was
just a really good feeling for everyone.
Speaker 3 (08:55):
Coach you mentioned after the game on Sunday a little
bit about the Lolls. After you got the big lead,
Arkansas came back a little bit. How have you kind
of addressed that with your team in terms of trying
to maintain consistency for forty minutes.
Speaker 1 (09:07):
Yeah, you talk about it, and you try to talk
about it in a way that you don't talk about
it sure, you know, and you don't want that to
be an issue or a problem. You just have to play.
And it's one of the things we try to stress
before the game. You just have to play forty minutes.
You know, if it takes forty five, you have to
play forty five good minutes. And you can't. You can't
get to a point where you're playing a scoreboard and
you get up nineteen after after one. And then from
(09:29):
that point on, we just kind of, you know, played
even with them because we would get it, we would
get it up to twenty five or so, and then
we would you know, allow them to shoot it. And
you give them credit, they stepped up. They knocked down
twelve threes. You know, they've knocked down twelve threes, and
it felt like they knocked down one hundred and twelve.
And I was just like, you know, I was, I
was really amazed at the end of the game that
we made more threes than they did. And so I
(09:50):
guess I knew what Mike was feeling because I was
just like, oh, my goodness, they just keep down knocking
down three after three, after three. But you know, they
give them credit. They knocked down some threes which kept them,
you know, hanging around. But I thought we played a
really good game. We dominated the boards, we shared the basketball,
we get and turned the ball over. We shot the
ball extremely well and those that's the recipe for success
(10:10):
in this league.
Speaker 3 (10:11):

BBN Game Day.
Speaker 3 (13:33):
Tomorrow night's matchup between Kentucky and Alabama is presented by
the Bluegrass Hearing Clinic with nine locations across Kentucky. Bluegrass
Hearing Clinic is proud to be a locally owned, all
female audiology practice dedicated to serving our communities. And it's
also National Girls and Women in Sports Day, so the
Bluegrass Hearing Clinic would like to join in celebrating the
(13:54):
achievements of women everywhere. So Tomorrow night is part of
the matchup with the Crimson Tide the Wildcare we'll also
honor National Girls and Women's in Sports Day, which I
imagine for you, coach, being the basketball coach of the
Kentucky Wildcats and also being a girl dad, it's a
special day for you as well.
Speaker 1 (14:10):
Very very special, and you know it's obviously you know,
we we've moved the needles so much in a very
short amount of time, and we want to continue to
do so for opportunities for for all women, uh to
be able to have and uh, you know, I just
always remember, you know, being a collegiate athlete and uh
playing in front of sold out crowds and uh and
then watching the women play and opportunities weren't as good
(14:31):
as they were for us. And then just seeing the
where it is today and you walk into Memorial and uh,
you know, and it's packed and people are there, they're
lining up, they're they're waiting for the young women to
sign autographs after the games. You know, those are those
are you know what we fight for. Those are the
opportunities that they deserve. And uh so it just warms
my heart just watching the growth of women's sports in general,
but especially women's basketball over the over the years when
(14:54):
we used to play in front of no one and
no one would be there maybe friends and family, and
now you walk out there, there's so many people waiting
to get into the basketball games to watch and support
and enjoy women's sports.
Speaker 3 (15:06):
And you've also got some outstanding young ladies that are
on your coaching staff as well. So, uh, tomorrow, Georgia
Amore is going to take the floor coach through seven
games in SEC plays she has accounted for over fifty
percent of Kentucky's scoring one hundred and forty eight points
that she's put in the basket herself, but fifty four
(15:26):
assists she has contributed to fifty one point three percent
of the cats eighty points per game in SEC play.
How special she is.
Speaker 1 (15:35):
I told you you know, and you know she uh uh,
you know. I love the kid to death and she
she just means so much, not only to you know
us BBN, but also women's sports in general, so many people.
Speaker 3 (15:49):
You know.
Speaker 1 (15:50):
She She's kind of like, uh, that that famous where
you have just one name, whether it's Share or Madonna.
This is Georgia. And that's all I have to do
when I talk to bigs, I just say Georgia, and
everyone knows exactly who she is. And not only is
she helping our team right now and as we continue
to get better and better, but she's going to help
us for the future because recruits see her and they
(16:12):
see what she's done. Uh, And it's really cool to
want to come play for the University of Kentucky because
Georgia is there. And so it's just, you know, the
mark that she's leaving on University of Kentucky. In a
very short amount of time. She's fun. You know, she's fine,
she's fun to watch, she's fun to be around, and
she's gonna she's gonna leave her legacy on this program
(16:33):
for a very long time.
Speaker 3 (16:34):
She also needs four assists tomorrow night to reach the
eight hundred assistant. Wow. Quick story just to kind of
highlight her fun personality. When you played down at Georgia
in Athens, while they were doing warm ups, the band
played what they called the Georgia spell out cheer, where
they spelled Georgia and did a little song. She playfully
(16:55):
pretended like they were cheering for her.
Speaker 1 (16:58):
So she's one of the funniest people that I've ever
been around. It's very witty, very blunt.
Speaker 10 (17:03):
Uh.
Speaker 1 (17:03):
And for BB for Big Blue Nation to know her
parents will be here in two weeks, I think it
is Uh. They actually landed in uh in the States.
They're gonna visit Georgia's younger sister in California and be
there for two weeks, and then they're gonna come here
for two weeks. And uh, if you have not if
you get a chance to meet them, meet them, they
will have you lying there. It's pure Australian comedy. Uh,
(17:27):
and you know they're just a hoo to be around,
and uh, they will live in up whatever room they
walk into.
Speaker 3 (17:32):
Coach, let's go to our Clark's pupping shop phone line
where Larry is standing by Larry, you're on with coach.
Speaker 17 (17:39):
Hey, coach, I'll watch every game I can hear home. Uh. Uh,
you know, it's so exciting to see us have a
good girls team now that can actually compete now, you know, y'all,
I'll tell you, well, you you got some athletes are
you know they're young? But uh, the i've read today
where the McDonald's all American, I don't even talk about
her or not she made McDonald's American teams. I can
(18:00):
she signed yet?
Speaker 11 (18:01):
Yeah?
Speaker 17 (18:01):
She is signed and okay, and it seems like the
two girls I've bet even realized you had two that
it was going to start that hurt. Are they fours
or what are they guards?
Speaker 1 (18:11):
One? Dom Paranova, she's a She's a six foot one guard.
She can play the two or the three. And then
Jordan Obie is six foot one, Uh, plays the three
and the four. Jordan is Jordan would have been our enforcer.
She's a big, strong player inside. And Dom is really
really fast and attacks the basket hard. And then, uh,
(18:34):
the young lady you're talking about, Kaylen Carroll, which we
call KK, is a six foot three long player can
shoot the lights out of the basketball. So we're we're
we're really fortunate to have you know, that size and
that length coming back for next year. We just need
to get a couple more players.
Speaker 3 (18:51):
Guards figured out a way to get Georgia anymore.
Speaker 1 (18:55):
You know, I'm trying trying to see if she can
get another like a six or seventh year. So we're
working on it.
Speaker 3 (19:01):
Larry, thank you so much for the call. Before we
get to a break, I wanted to talk a little
more about this offense and the way you guys are
flowing right now. We talk a lot about Georgia and
how she gets her teammates open or manipulates defense, but
what about the off ball movement from your team where
players are getting themselves open to help her out.
Speaker 1 (19:22):
You know, It's it's funny because I probably call less
plays this year than I ever have before really, and
it's more of a free flowing read and react. You know,
it's I've taken the reins off. You know, where they
get the basketball, they kick it out to Georgia and
I'm just like, go go, go, go go, And they
are creating opportunities for themselves. And they're creating those opportunities
(19:45):
that are very organic, and they know and they read
off of each other. So it's not a set play.
So it's very, very hard for people to guard. That's
one of the things that the Arkansas coach told me.
He says, man, you guys are hard to guard because
we don't just do certain things. We don't just set
up an offense to say ready, go. It's a lot
of reading and reacting. We'll put them in certain areas
and they know kind of what they're supposed to do,
(20:06):
but they improvise a lot off of it, and they're
able to read each other and that's the beauty of it.
Sometimes I don't know what they're gonna do, but they
read each other, they react, and they're what we have,
especially with our starting five. They are all really good passers.
They're all really good passers. They're willing, they're able, and
they pass the basketball. That's an underrated quality in basketball.
(20:31):
People will say why are they fast? Are they strong?
Can they shoot? But not many people look at kids
who can really pass and if you have kids who
can pass, that means the world because when we pass
with each other, it's usually on the money or it's
a backdoor. It's on the money and it's not something
where they have to reset. And when you can get
shots in rhythm, then you can be a much better
basketball team. And that's one of the things that It's
(20:52):
a quality that we have that a lot of people
don't really look at, but we have really good passers.
Speaker 3 (20:56):
That's why your center Clara Strak has almost sixty assists
on the year.
Speaker 1 (21:00):
That yeah, you know, it's it's that's something different than
we've ever had. You know, I had a six or
six All American that we threw the ball inside to,
but she wasn't a good passer. Clara, the ball doesn't stick,
and she will move the basketball and she moves it
as well, and she sees things naturally like a point guard.
And you know that too, because they say the great
ones really can't explain, you know, what they do while
(21:23):
they do it, how they do it.
Speaker 10 (21:24):
Uh.
Speaker 1 (21:25):
And when I ask for all the time, why did
you make that pass? What did you see? And she
looks at me and she'll just shrug her shoulders I
don't know. I just did it and and that, and
that's a sign of greatness because she does something that
not many centers in this country can do. If any
and I've said it before, you know, if there is
a better passing center in the country, please show them
to me. They will debate it because Clara does a
(21:47):
tremendous job of passing basketball.
Speaker 3 (21:49):
Let's get to our final time out here on the

Final segment of this week's Bluegrass here in clinic Kenny
Brookshaw the Wildcat's taking on Alabama tomorrow night inside Historic
Memorial colisem hope you can join us if you are
coming to the game. You are encouraged to wear white
for the matchup. Coach Tianni Keyes shooting almost sixty percent
and sec play something I was looking at earlier today?
(24:28):
How have you seen her grab another gear and kind
of elevate as the competition has also risen for this team.
Speaker 1 (24:34):
You know her current just her confidence is rising each
and every game, regardless of who we're playing and she's
feeling good about herself, and you know, she's she's a
tremendous talent. And one of the things he was just
in my office is I left to come over here.
And that's what I just told her. I said, you're
doing a really good job of being comfortable with being uncomfortable,
because obviously, her first couple of years at U n C,
(24:56):
she wasn't given the opportunities that she's being presented with
now and uh and she's really taken them and running
with them. And so every day we're trying to do
something different. I think I don't think she made a
three pointer at UNC, and she's made six or seven
this year. We're going to continue to grow that.
Speaker 10 (25:10):
Uh.
Speaker 1 (25:11):
But she's just been really a force for us. And
she's been our like I've told you before, she's been
our swag. Yeah, you know, she's the one that really
gets us going and uh and and and the kids
follow suit and uh and so it's just been a
lot of fun watching her growth, her development, and I
think it's going to continue to get better.
Speaker 3 (25:26):
You have some including Tianni outside of Georgia, more and
more vocal leaders emerging on this team. I think you
even mentioned Lexi Blue gets a little vocal.
Speaker 1 (25:34):
Yeah. And and you know, everything happens organically, you know.
You we've talked about it a lot. I think at
the beginning of the year, I was talking about I
needed them to be a little bit more vocal, a
little bit more uh nasty, a little bit more you know,
just talking the game and uh. And they've all come
into their own they have in their own way, and
it's like a it's like a sex seven headed monster.
And now they all understand. You know, Georgia is a
(25:55):
vocal leader. They follow the lead. Dejah law as a
as a vocal leader, Tianni is swag, Clari Strack does
it by example, Millie is the humor. And you know,
they all have something that they bring to the table
and and it just forms into something that's collectively as great.
Speaker 7 (26:11):
Yeah.
Speaker 3 (26:12):
Dejah Lawrence just quietly leading the sec in three point
about that.
Speaker 1 (26:15):
Yeah, yeah, so you know what, and but you know
she's she steps up, she knocks down shots, she's ready
for it when Georgia throws it to her, uh, celebrates
in everyone's successes. She is a beneficiary, but she also
delivers it with we went down to Georgia, and I
think she had four assists to Georgia. And so it's
just everyone's stepping up and playing their part and they're
playing well, very well together.
Speaker 3 (26:37):
We have talked about what a matchup nightmare for opponents
Amelia Hassett has been. How about her stat line against Arkansas?
Four three pointers made, four assists, four blocks, seven rebounds.
First player that we can find in SEC history to
have that stat line, have that dominant of a game.
Speaker 1 (26:55):
That's unbelievable, you know. And that's what you call a
stat sheet stuffer. And you know, she she fills up
the stat sheet and she does so many different things
for us, and I think sometimes some of it goes unnoticed,
and that's why you look up and she has, you know,
sixteen twenty points, you know, fourteen rebounds, you know, a
couple of blocks, and and so she just, you know,
(27:16):
to say she's exceeded my expectations, it's it's unfair because
I really didn't know what she could do. We wanted
to see what she could do. But she's been a
delight to coach on and off the floor, and she
she epitomizes what you want in a student athlete and
she's really a cultural builder.
Speaker 3 (27:33):
You know what. The one thing I've noticed about her
too in attending practice and watching her in games, is
her confidence has grown. We're starting to see more and
more different moves in her arsenal that she can make
around the basket.
Speaker 1 (27:44):
So I'll tell you what to dare. And she's smart.
She's a very smart basketball player. Today today I said
something I'm wrong and I told her that she was
supposed to one person was supposed to pop and she
was supposed to roll or something, and she very quickly
corrected me. And you know, she understands the games so well.
She understands our systems so well that we can move
her around. You know, like tomorrow, she'll probably be guarding
(28:06):
a point guard a little bit to bother their their
point guard. Their point guard's big. Their point guards about
six foot two, and so you know, Millie moves well
enough that she can you know, affect some shots. So
she's just the versatility that she brings to our program
allows me to do a lot of different things.
Speaker 3 (28:22):
Got about a minute left in the show, So in
about thirty forty five seconds, Alabama's Marnott, you and I
will break down the matchup pre game, but kind of
give us a synopsis of what to expect from the
Tide in thirty second.
Speaker 1 (28:32):
Yeah, Christy Curry does a tremendous job with that group
transfer in. She got the right type of players. The
kid Nay is six foot two point guard. As I mentioned,
one of the better players in the SEC. Barker is
she's an animal. I mean that and affectionately in a
great way. She plays really, really hard and she's the engine.
Unfortunate for us, she came back last game and didn't
(28:54):
have any Russ to score thirty six points. So it's
gonna be It's gonna be a very good game and
we're looking forward to it.
Speaker 3 (28:58):
Coach, we'll see tomorrow night.
Speaker 1 (28:59):
Thank you very much.
Speaker 3 (29:00):
