obviously by now you know there has been a change.
It by all accounts, has been an amicable parting, and
so there's a now that it has happened, and because
(01:36):
the tone is an amicable one, it's a time when
we can reflect on a lot of highlights that took
place over the last thirteen years, talk a little bit
about that. Not going to speculate about names, but we
can talk a little bit about the qualities that you
might want if you're looking for a coach, because several
SEC schools have been in the market for that and
(01:58):
several jobs have already been filled. So we'll talk about
all of that over the course of the next hour,
and then in the second hour tonight you'll will hear
from coach Mark Pope his second show of the season
ahead of a big showdown with North Carolina tomorrow night
in the sec ACC Challenge at Rupp Arena, And we
won't even have started pregame coverage by this time. Tomorrow
(02:19):
night doesn't tip until nine to thirty, so it'll be
a late one tomorrow. We'll also, I think we'rek in
a little conversation about UK Volleyball, which is hosting first
and second round play in the NCAA tournament on Thursday
and Friday this week at Historic Memorial Coliseum. So that's
what's on the agenda for this first hour and we'll
be right back to get to it here on the

lot of times you'll see the quarterback try to.

Speaker 3 (06:36):
They're starting to come onto the field, down to the
far end. Ten seconds to play. Tolls drops to a knee.
It was California chrome in the spring. It's Kentucky chrome
in the fall. As the Wildcats defeats South Carolina forty
five to thirty eight, and it's party time as the
fans come on the field and CommonWell Stadium, Dick.
Speaker 9 (07:01):
Gabriel take it away.
Speaker 12 (07:03):
All right, we're gonna try to get home of Bud Dupree.
He's being swarm Bud. Tell me about the touchdown.

You're own live, great man.
Speaker 9 (07:12):
I'll help my team out of need.
Speaker 12 (07:14):
What did you guys do to turn things around defensively?
Speaker 9 (07:17):
We did have a hel Moti base and tell you know.
Speaker 3 (07:19):
The first half of the season.
Speaker 9 (07:21):
This is turning out to be.
Speaker 1 (07:23):
Wow.
Speaker 9 (07:24):
Let's send it to Bud.
Speaker 3 (07:25):
Dupree and the interception that ignited the stadium that night
and one of the louder nights we've all our days,
we've all been at Kroger Field. That's whatever the top
five list is, that's in the discussion as Jeffikoro Dick
Gabriel joined the program, and we're gonna drop in a
few highlights from a lot of the good times of
(07:48):
the Mark Stoops era, because there were a lot of
good times. When somebody's around for thirteen years, they're around
for that long, because there's a lot of good things
that have happened. Obviously, it didn't go as well as
the staff and the players wanted in the last couple
of years.
Speaker 9 (08:06):
And these things happened in college football. Pick yeah.
Speaker 11 (08:08):
I think that what people have to remember, because I've
seen a lot of what do you call it funeral
on social media platforms about the Stoops and stuff. But
remember what he got here. It was a joker Phillips season.
They were two and ten the Hope the final year.
It was a really bad football team, and the cupboard
was bear yeah. And I remember, and so do you guys,
(08:33):
that he'd beat a practice and he's I'll never forget this.
He goes up to Neil Brown and he says, what
do we got? He goes, this is it? He goes Okay,
he says, well what do we got? He goes, well,
that one and that one I think know the plays
and that one can catch. So it's like that's what
he started with. And in two years he had a
(08:55):
Bowl team and you went to eight consecutive Bulls here.
So that's what you have to remember and what he
brought here. And I think the biggest thing that he
brought to Kentucky football was the toughness and competitiveness and
that that grit that you have to have in the SEC.
And he gets that from his upbring, eating Youngstown and
his dad and Trestle and all those guys. But that's
what he brought to UK football, and that's something if
(09:17):
you don't have it, you're not gonna win in the SEC.
Speaker 12 (09:19):
You know that play as much as any other. And
by the way, it is either right before or after
I talked to Bud, I walked, I'm on the field
and who's standing in the end zone by himself? But
Mark stoops with his grint on his street. It's just watching,
just watching the whole thing unfold. And I pointed to
my mic and he just nodded. So I went over
and talk about but watching that play, and everybody in
(09:42):
his room can relate to this. It was a play
like many others, when things began to go really, really well,
I thought to myself, you know that used to happen
to Kentucky. That used to be a Kentucky pass that
got picked off and run in game over and more
and more and more those plays happen for Kentucky, plays
(10:03):
made by the wildcast because he raised a talent level
here to a spot where even Rich Brooks I don't
think had it up that if for all the great
things Rich did, it's hard to compare eras, but you
got to go back to Bear Brian when you talk
about talent level compared to the teams that were playing against,
and that's what he did. That's why they won so
(10:24):
many games.
Speaker 3 (10:24):
At some point, probably this week, we'll find out who
the successor is and that coach will come in potentially
with a cupboard that's not as bare as it was
when Mark arrived. And again you have to always throughout
the caveat on that kind of discussion. In our current time,
if you can retain guys, and that was going to
(10:46):
be a challenge, whether it was the coaching change or not,
just because it's always a challenge these days. Whoever shows
out well is going to hear from other people, and
so you have to find a way to keep your
most talented guys. And so that will be the challenge
for the next head football coach here because it starts
with Cutter Bowley certainly a quarterback, but there's a lot
of other promising young players on both sides of the ball.
Speaker 11 (11:07):
Yeah, especially that was the sophomore class this year that
will all be juniors next year. I mean, there is
handfuls of guys that are that are really I mean this,
this is going to be a pretty good team next year.
They had some bad luck this year, and I'm not
making excuses. They simply weren't good enough in games. But
there was some bad luck and the injuries happened in
(11:28):
some really key spots. And when you lose two parts
of your secondary and you play those two with freshmen,
that's a tough low. When you're going against a guy
like Pavia and then against Jeff brom coach team and
Brian Brohm and what they do. And we saw that,
and but they already went out. They got a couple
Juco guys. I know one one is opened back up
(11:49):
is but then they got another one today, another lineman
that says I'm still coming.
Speaker 9 (11:53):
I loved it.
Speaker 11 (11:54):
There and I'm not coming for the coach and Coach
Wolf told him they take a scholar. You know, the
scholarship is still there, and he's a monster sixty six, three
hundred and twenty five pound offensive lineman. So there's guys that
want to come here, and that's because of what Mark
has done.
Speaker 3 (12:09):
And you have the opportunity game now with nil and
the transfer portal to build something much more quickly than
you used to be able to when you came in
as a new coach.
Speaker 12 (12:19):
There's more flexibility, there's no question about that. What's interesting
to me is all the names have been thrown out there,
and look, if we knew something we'd shared with you,
promise you we all know the same name as you do.
But an overwhelming majority of them are offensive guys. And
it was the same sort of thing that came up.
And I'm not saying they should go one way or
(12:39):
the other before they hired a defensive guy and Mark stoops,
but this much we know about the SEC and you
played in it. You banged in the defensive players. You've
got to have defense. You got to have really really
good defense to whoever they hire. If it's an offensive guy,
his DC hire is going to be critical. His staff
is going to be critical. That's something that Stoop's built.
(13:02):
Brad White terrific, annwar Stewart terrific. They've always done well
with defensive back. So until the injuries begin to pile up,
Kentucky's defense kept it competitive. They've got to keep that
and they will. Whoever they hires. Whoever they hire is
going to be smart enough to know that.
Speaker 3 (13:19):
You can send us questions on the Clark's Pumping Shop

Speaker 11 (13:48):
And I think Tom, for those in the room, they
can just go back to that guy that was sitting
back there, Brian and just he I know he's got
a bunch of his pockets to just grab him from here.

In the SEC, it just means more. But what is
it exactly? It's the fans, the students, the traditions, the legends.
It's passion to celebrate deeper, breach farther, think smarter, make
an impact off the field. It's that intangible thing that
happens when sixteen schools raise the bar. Is one because
(14:27):
in the SEC, it just means more.

Wilson with a playfake all kinds of time. He is
throwing deep Bowden's out there.
Speaker 21 (17:14):
Got it tuck down Kentucky.
Speaker 22 (17:18):
Wilson laden right in the bread basket inside the five.
Speaker 3 (17:22):
That was from the twenty eighteen win over the Florida Gators,
and that was in Gainsville, and it broke the streak
that thirty one years yeah, in nineteen eighty six had
been the previous time Kentucky had beaten the Gators. And
so that was a very memorable night. You had Cash
Daniels doing the stone called Steve Austin salute there in
(17:45):
victory and Lynn Bowden had a big touchdown catch and
Josh Allen had a big hit late that forced a
fumble that actually Kentucky recovered and padded the score a
little bit for a touchdown. So I remember another big
part of the mark stoops are it was John Schlarva.
I remember standing the tunnel that night before the game
talking to John down on the field.
Speaker 12 (18:05):
I was in the locker room and he gave him
the ball.
Speaker 3 (18:06):
Oh, I was gonna say he got the game ball
afterward maybe he and Josh Pascal maybe well.
Speaker 12 (18:11):
Josh wasn't there. They dedicated it to him.
Speaker 11 (18:14):
Remember when Slava was on the sidelines when they played
the song the Tom Petty Song and games and he said,
listen to this Eddie was singing the song. He said,
this is awesome that that's the things.
Speaker 12 (18:25):
You were, you know, one of the one of the great.
Just real quickly personally two years ago, I took a
little break, hit a little open heart and I'm in
the recovery. I'm in I'm in my room. And that
day Kentucky had played and things did not go well.
With Alabama, but our beloved producer Brad Tucker brought me
a get will gift. It was a photograph of the
(18:45):
captains going out for the coin toss of that game.
Oh yes, and there's your your boy over here with
the mike waiting for them for the coin toss. And
I'll never forget how orange and blue the sky was.
Speaker 9 (18:57):
Didn't matter that and I did it did not.
Speaker 3 (19:00):
That was such a cool memory from one of the Again,
one of the highlights that was a win over a
ranked Florida team.
Speaker 9 (19:07):
At that time.
Speaker 3 (19:08):
They didn't finish up being ranked, but they were ranked
at that time, and I think Mark had a think
thirteen wins over ranked teams in his time, which is
about one fourth of the total for the history of
the program. There also a Coach of the Year in
twenty eighteen, first one since coach Clayburn in eighty four.
Uh set the school record for wins for sec wins,
(19:29):
So a lot of highlights. We had a question off
the text line and you can send those in on
the Clark's Pumping Shop tax line eight five nine two
o three one two three four. How did we individually
feel about the departure of coach stops, Gabe.
Speaker 12 (19:44):
I thought he did it with class, you know, by renegotiating.
He took the shackles off the athletic department financially and
let them go because, as he said last week, we
asked him, you know, just about the U L rivalry
or night, and he said, like it or not, I'm
an Tucky And you know, he's lived here longer than
anywhere else prior to Lee or you know, since he
(20:05):
left Youngstown. Uh so he loves his place and you know,
for a long time, he raised his children here and uh,
you know, it didn't end the way he wanted it to.
But I think that it was a classy move, Jeff,
the way he did it.
Speaker 9 (20:19):
Yeah, I.
Speaker 11 (20:21):
Just think that that's really hard to answer the question
of what do you think about him, you know, being
let go because of what he did here. But yeah,
I agree one hundred percent the way that he that
he left helped both sides.
Speaker 9 (20:39):
Yep.
Speaker 11 (20:40):
So, but I really Tom when we talked to him after.
Speaker 12 (20:44):
The game Saturday, he was despondent.
Speaker 11 (20:48):
Yeah, he was like his soul had left him, you know,
he was just I saw it.
Speaker 9 (20:54):
Then I said, this is it.
Speaker 11 (20:55):
He needs to not just on a beavior law. Yeah,
he just needs to go somewhere and recharges batteries beach.
Speaker 3 (21:02):
Yeah, it's you know, all the coaches know the day
you're hired, clock starts sticking on the day you're going
to be asked to walk away. Most likely, occasionally you
get to, you know, retire on your own terms.
Speaker 9 (21:16):
But usually.
Speaker 3 (21:18):
They make a change and then you start fresh somewhere else,
or maybe you retire. Who knows what'll be next for Mark.
I sent him a text today and I just said,
from our standpoint, so just thanks for a lot of
memorable moments because we love being a part of those
to bring them to the fans on the radio network,
and we had a bunch of them over the last
thirteen years, like the ones we've just heard about.
Speaker 9 (21:39):
So think about this time.
Speaker 12 (21:41):
He was the dean of SCC Coaches, the Kentucky coach survive.
All these other schools make coaching changes. Yes, Saban step down,
but all these other schools just couldn't get it right
for the longest time, and Kentucky did. But it's tough
to stay in one place.
Speaker 3 (21:59):
We'll make this our Alumni Hall Fan question of the week.

I didn't need a single great call.
Speaker 7 (24:56):
They don't go to snap, They go to c J. Conrad.
Speaker 3 (25:01):
That was out of Missouri the twenty eighteen season that
took them to their first New Year's Day Bowl win
since nineteen fifty one and the first ten win season
since seventy seven. And one of those ten was that day.
And what happens for anybody doesn't remember or maybe didn't remember,
had actually played out. We're in the booth and they're
(25:21):
going left to right, and so when Terry Wilson's looking
to his left, basically his back's turned to us.
Speaker 9 (25:27):
You imagine that. So CJ.
Speaker 3 (25:29):
Conrad goes down and cuts out to the left to
the front pylon on the far side, and Terry hits him. Well,
he catches the ball and then his back is to us,
so I'm there's a sea of people there, so he
could have bobbled it, you know, did he stay in
bounds and I'm waiting for the signal, But Jeff was
like he was on it and he was.
Speaker 11 (25:46):
Right well when they came out of the huddle. With
that play, the way the defense was aligned, it was
the easiest touchdown on the world because they're trying to
when you're on the the goal line most of the
time you see guys, there's only two routes you could run.
You're either going to run a slant to the middle
(26:07):
ninety percent of that or if you're six four six
five year one, what we call a fade and the
cornerback throws it to the back corner of the end zone.
So the cornerback or actually a strong safety comes inside
a conrad so he's actually lined up here side shoulder,
so he couldn't. But with the play, I knew the
outside guy was gonna come do it over and it
(26:29):
was just all he had to do was toss it
out there. And so as a receiver and you see
that defense, you're just like, please God, snap the ball,
Please snap the ball, because you know you've got to
beat because he's gonna throw to that point.
Speaker 9 (26:41):
Wife to do is be there.
Speaker 12 (26:42):
Your favorite is another end zone.
Speaker 11 (26:44):
My favorite play though in anytime you beat Tennessee. To me,
it's the greatest thing because I can't stand. I will
not wear orange, I won't drink orange pop, I won't
spend money in Tennessee.
Speaker 9 (26:55):
Hate it, but eat an orange. Yeah.
Speaker 11 (26:58):
The josh A Lee catch from Lynn Bowden in the
bowl game the Belk Bowl was just I mean that
was that was cool.
Speaker 3 (27:05):
Of all the ways for that team to win a
game on a pass.
Speaker 12 (27:09):
Yeah, I was gonna pick that one, but I let
Jeff have that because he's a receiver. And I love
the CJ. Conrad play. But I'm gonna go to the
Louisville game, not just one play. Will Levis scores four touchdowns, hurdles,
one player runs through another one. And then my favorite
moment supplemented to that was Josh Allen was looking over
(27:33):
at the cheerleaders and then that you know, that huge
flag they have, and somebody says something to Josh and
he goes, you know, when this game's over, I'm gonna
grab that flag and I'm gonna wave them out of it,
and he did went over to the UK fans waving
that flag and oh man, they had a good time.
Speaker 3 (27:48):
And you're hearing from about a lot of former players
on social media just talking about how grateful they were
to have been recruited by the coach Stoops and the
staff to be a Wildcat and to live out a
dream and to get to have some of those special
memories that they had that were reflecting on at this time.
On this edition of The Kentucky Football Show, presented by

in on the text line that's eight five nine two
oh three one two three four. You can also send
(28:30):
them in via social media. It's at UK Sports Network
on X. Somebody asked me today, uh, whether they're asking
for speculation on who the successor is going to be?
Speaker 9 (28:41):
And then I get into that, but.
Speaker 3 (28:43):
Uh, I said, you know, but I said, I will
tell you this, here's what they should look for.
Speaker 9 (28:48):
It should be a coach.
Speaker 3 (28:50):
As Bark was when he arrived, that wants the job
because of what he believes is the potential.
Speaker 9 (28:58):
Not the money.
Speaker 3 (29:00):
And that's somebody that sees what he saw and what
they were able to build couldn't a lot of Some
of it goes to the change of the landscape of
the business part of the game. But you know, sustaining
it is another level of challenge beyond building it. But
they built it into some really great moments.
Speaker 12 (29:19):
And they can look at what Mark's troops did and say, oh, okay,
he won ten games here and it's not it's not
the Kentucky of old games and NEI there was college football.
Speaker 3 (29:29):
And Jeff, you know, people can co a perspective. Coach
can look at what Vanderbilt, Indiana programs like that are
doing in this current climate that Okay, there is a
way to spend money wisely and evaluate well and maybe
make it happen.
Speaker 9 (29:45):
Yeah.
Speaker 11 (29:45):
I the only thing I hope is that they get
a guy that is willing to work that process. The
transfer portal and nil, because you see what it did
to Vanderbilt. You saw what Indiana has got horrible facilities
for anybody that's ever been there. They were the dormat
basically the Big Ten for years and years and years.
You hire Signetti the first year, first year, they you know,
(30:07):
they go and look at this this second year and
they're going to the playoffs. So it can be done.
And we're this close to it too. The money is there,
and Mark was talking about this last couple of weeks.
Speaker 12 (30:17):
Mark tews twice at Kentucky flirting with the SEC champions.
Speaker 9 (30:20):
Ten wins at nine wins in a season.
Speaker 3 (30:22):
And ten is the you know what it would take
in a regular season to probably be in a playoff
now and Andy's ten and two. They're not quite gonna
make it, but probably, but they're very close. And if
you can win ten games, you have a shot to
get the playoffs, especially if they expanded to sixteen at
some point, you know, Likevandy now would be in. So
(30:43):
if that happens, it seems likely that it will at
some point that you can build something where you can
get in that playoff.
Speaker 12 (30:51):
From time to one thing, I'm always gonna remember, Tom,
you talked about the players who tweeted in and things
like that. We've seen the pictures the video I was
in that locker rooms said after the Florida game, we
were all around Missouri when he did the you know,
like a little mosh pit thing when he would dive
into his players and celebrate bodysurfing. Yeah, bodysurfing. And when
after the second Florida win, remember Roman Harper for the
(31:13):
SEC Network said, I think Kentucky's a little soft going
into the Florida game. And then Kentucky went out and won,
came one and in that's right, Marks Tewps came running
in that locker room because he had been doing TV
on the field. Everybody was in there dancing, and he yoke,
who's soft now? And they picked him up, and I
mean it was it was great as players loved it.
Speaker 9 (31:33):
One of the ceiling tiles out we were talking about highlights.
Speaker 3 (31:36):
Another one that it was a fun moment to call
because it kind of clinched that Citrus Bowl win over
a program like Penn State and also broke a record
at the same time, Benny Snell's touchdown Citrus Bowl when
fell to his run in which he uh set the
record that Sonny Collins had held for so long. So
(31:57):
uh Bunny and Josh Allen in that game. It's to
the great number of really outstanding, memorable players that were
brought into this program over the last thirteen years. You're
listening to The Kentucky Football Show. It's presented by UK

Logan Stenberg, thank you, sir, Ricky Lumkin, thank you. You
(36:28):
hear them all season long. Christy Thomas on the pregame show,
and uh, it's been fun for you.
Speaker 9 (36:33):
Guys, right.
Speaker 27 (36:34):
I'll enjoyed the heck out of you kidding me.
Speaker 28 (36:36):
I love it talking ball, talking about the Cats, sitting
up there looking at Logan and playing.
Speaker 27 (36:40):
It's a lot easier than playing, I'll be honest. With
you just a few facts out and sometimes they're not facts.
Speaker 3 (36:48):
And you guys, you know, bringing other players at times
and as we're reflecting and at this time on this
you know, just completed era for coach Stoops and hearing
as I mentioned, I'm seeing comments from a lot of
players today that played here talking about the good memories
or thanks for the opportunity to have played here. And
(37:10):
you guys had and your relationship with your position coach
is always very special. And it's not only coach stops
that will be departing, but a lot of support personnel
and staff people.
Speaker 9 (37:21):
And you guys.
Speaker 3 (37:24):
Heard from Kenneth Horsey and I know that that was
a really kind of emotional thing and Logan you were
in that offensive line brotherhood where he was talking about
John Schlarman. Yeah, and what his position coach you know,
meant to him.
Speaker 9 (37:36):
Yeah, it was.
Speaker 27 (37:36):
It was insane obviously just watching him show up to
work every day. Obviously he's heard and he's going through
chemo therapy. He's getting smaller and weaker every day. At
that point, I was in my rookie year in Detroit
and you know, speaking of Mark, Mark calls me up,
He's like, hey, man. He spoke to John's I know
what's wrong. How's he doing. He's like, well, you know,
he's pretty bad. I give him a call, give him
(37:57):
a call, say what's up to him. The next day
passes away. You know, it's so important you talk about
the importance of these position coaches and what they mean
to you when you're seventeen eighteen years old and you
come into a brand new city, me being from Alabama,
Ricky from Tennessee. So it's just you find fatherhood in
that guy. He's the one that's leading you to be
a man. He's the one that's leading you to not
(38:18):
do this and to do this. And so to lose
him like that so abruptly was hard. But it speaks
on the importance of those position coaches for sure.
Speaker 3 (38:27):
And Ricky, a lot of former players at a time
like this kind of have that. There's that brotherhood that
comes comes about us. See at any time that former
players kept together, there's just a natural connection for those
people that left. You wore the jersey and left a
lot of blood, sweat and tears on the field or
on the court or whatever the field of competition is.
Speaker 28 (38:46):
You just know it because you went through it together, right,
you didn't do it at the same time. But with Logan,
for example, I know he was an offensive lineman. I
was his counselor when he was here. But then at
the same time, I knew exactly what he went through
when he came in because we we would have to
each other every single.
Speaker 9 (39:01):
Day of practice.
Speaker 28 (39:02):
I know what it was like for him in games
to get beat up, hitting three hundred pound linemen and
then coming in with a sore knee because someone rolled
up on them. You get that when you see old players.
You can talk about those times, even if it's twenty
years apart. Seeing Oliver White meaning him talking about when
he was playing in the eighties compared to now, it's
the same thing. You get beat up, you're banking heads,
your body hurts, and you still got to walk the class.
(39:23):
You still got to hear everybody say how good or
bad you did. You can just communicate and understand that
feeling of dread or excitement or love or hate, depending
on the game.
Speaker 3 (39:34):
I was talking to Van Hiles on my radio show
this morning, who played in the nineties, and he was
talking about playing at a time when his coach was
like coach Curry at the time and just you know
how it's a tough thing to go through as a player.
Speaker 28 (39:48):
It is very tough. I was part of the transition
from Brooks to Joker. Joker was my senior year when
we went to the BBVA Compass Bowl, and talking about that.
He always gives me a hard time about that. Talking
about position coaches, Right, I had coach Petrie for four
years and then I had a new coach and David Turner.
That was a culture shock. So I understand what these
players are about to go through because I'm like, dude,
(40:09):
that's weird. You had this one position coach for four
years and all of a sudden, here's a change. It's like,
all right, mentally, you have to prepare for that, like
you're still doing and giving it. You're all for Kentucky
and for the program, but there's going to be a
difference in the meeting room.
Speaker 27 (40:23):
I think you have to bet too, I mean, because
obviously whoever we pick and bring in, they're gonna have
a completely different scheme though overused to for the past
thirteen years, and wondering if you fit in that scheme
can be scary. You know, such a young guy and
so knowing that they're coming from a successful program. The
guys that we're looking at currently, knowing that they're probably
going to bring some people with them, And I think
it's a great thing. I think it's going to just
(40:45):
push our guys to be either better or phase them out,
which is sad to say, but in the long run,
we're gonna be better as a football team with this transition.
But yeah, it's just a weird thing kind of knowing
your place when a new guy comes in.
Speaker 28 (40:58):
But you know what, as you know, it prepares you
for that next level in the NFL. Yeah, yeah, because
that is life. That's what you're gonna go through, whether
it's football, a job, school, whatever, that's part of life.
There's gonna be changes. It's gonna be how you adapt
to and how you see and how you handle it.
And that's what they're gonna to be prepared for.
Speaker 27 (41:14):
Patricia drafted me and he was gone eight games in
the season, So I mean it's just like I feel,
it was crazy.
Speaker 3 (41:20):
It's you know, it's it is more so than ever
for college athletes now a business. I mean, you're expected
to show up for work and be a pro and those.
Speaker 9 (41:29):
Kinds of things. That are the expectation at the next.
Speaker 27 (41:32):
Level, and you hear about the contracts and how it's
being held with these guys and if they're going to
be retained for the next year. I mean, when we
were playing, it was it was my scholarship. Are y'all
paying for my book? Still perfect? Let's go, you know,
you get a little stipend check and you go and
you pay your rent and whatever. But it's completely different now.
I cannot imagine being eighteen years old and somebody pushing
the paper across the table here's five hundred grand, we
(41:52):
think you're worth that, do you agree, and then negotiating.
It's it's insane to me.
Speaker 3 (41:56):
It's so It was so funny the other night when
coach Pelfrey was back and they had the unforgettables together
at the basketball game the night before Thanksgiving, and Coach
Pope actually asked the four players, you know anything you
think you left on the table, and when it came
to Richie Farmy said, well, I would have liked to
have gotten.
Speaker 9 (42:11):
In on that. Nil. Yeah, no doubt, no doubt, which
I totally understand.
Speaker 3 (42:16):

Fifty one yards to give Kentucky the win over Mississippi State.
Speaker 1 (44:58):
Good snap the way did it get there?
Speaker 4 (45:02):
It's God Kentucky, wis Austin beget Us is a hero.
Speaker 1 (45:10):
And it barely cleared the crossbar.
Speaker 9 (45:14):
Party time and common Well let.
Speaker 3 (45:16):
To see made the one against Louisville later that season,
and that was the first Bowl year of eighth straight
for Coachtops in the Kentucky football program. That was in
twenty sixteen. We were talking earlier with Pick and Gabe
about you know, favorite moments. What about you logan you
played under coach Oops.
Speaker 27 (45:35):
Yeah, I always just go back to the Florida game
and just kind of wenting down there. It went down
there in the swamp, ending the streak, and the moment
that really sticks out to me is Drake Jackson is
kind of how do I put it nicely, very scatterbrained
in the middle of a game. He's worried about a
lot of stuff, you know, because he has to make
the mic point. He's a hard job.
Speaker 30 (45:54):
But he's over there talking to John like, hey on
this blah blah ball there and over front Downey put
the mic over here, and he's like, Drake, shut up.
They're playing Tom Patty. He's like, enjoy this. You're never
gonna see it again.
Speaker 9 (46:05):
Shut up.
Speaker 27 (46:06):
And so like being there listening to that, knowing like,
hey man, take it in. This is once in a
lifetime going down there, beating them. And obviously I remember
the cash, Daniel Stone cold gatorade and all that.
Speaker 9 (46:17):
It was fun, Ricky.
Speaker 3 (46:19):
From your standpoint of following it as a as a
fan these past thirteen years, is there a favorite win
or anything that sticks.
Speaker 28 (46:28):
Out for you at Tennessee, I loved I loved that
one at twenty twenty, being from Tennessee, knowing that we
choked against Tennessee every year. I was here to finally
get it done, To see it like that in Neeland Stadium,
to shut that place up, the interceptions on defense, just
dominating them. It was beautiful because the amount of texts
I get from my friends from the state of Tennessee,
(46:49):
very very annoying, and so it was gratifying to send
it the other way around. And to some of my
old NFL teammates like, ha, Rocky what you never bed them?
Speaker 9 (47:00):
No, you didn't beat him out.
Speaker 3 (47:12):
From Kirby and Franklin, who says, by the way, uh
loves joker jokers from that part of the state.
Speaker 9 (47:18):
Uh. He said, what coaches are left? Uh? And or
is that up to the new coach? It is up
to the next coach.
Speaker 3 (47:26):
But there are times when some one, two whatever could
could be retained. Remember it's a coach named Bill Glazer
that stayed on through about three different head coaches in
the seventies and eighties because he was such an outstanding recruiter,
particularly in the in the city of Louisville. And I
had been a head coach at st X. So we'll
just have to see how that plays out. When the
(47:46):
new the new person comes in, he'll get the chance
to put his staff together. And it's a challenging time certainly, guys,
because you're going to nine SEC games next year and
it's that it's gonna be maybe harder than it's ever been, right.
Speaker 27 (48:05):
No doubt about it. I mean we had a tough
schedule this year. Going in the next year, you kind
of look at it and you think, can we get
a break? No, we don't have a break. And kind
of going back to what you were saying, I think
the coordinators are almost as important as the head coach.
I mean, who he choose. Obviously we're looking at an
offensive coordinator currently, so an offensive minded guy, but who
he chooses to go and run that defense. You can
speak on it way more than I can, but it's
(48:26):
super important to have three phases together working as one.
Speaker 28 (48:30):
And when it comes to the schedule, to me, I'm like,
you signed up for it. I knew what I was
getting into when I came to Kentucky. I knew who
were gonna be playing. I knew what it was like.
It is what it is. You're gonna play him. At
some point, let's buckle up and go because everyone's already
doubting you. That's one of the reasons you came here.
It's because no one believed in you in the first place.
So let's go shut people up. But when it comes
(48:50):
to coaching and whatnot, it comes down to believing in
the process and believing in the coach. In general, especially
for the guys that were retaining that's gonna stay here.
Can you buy in? Can you accept what's happening? Can
you Can you accept change? If you can accept change,
we can make something shake and make something beautiful again
to where like there's a standard that's been set. Coachtops
has done an amazing job here. He set a standard.
(49:11):
The guys need to get back to that standard. You're
starting to have guys that don't know what it's like
to go to a bowl game, but you're gonna have
guys on this team that knows what it's like to
go to a bowl game. Get back to that, get
back to where we get to with the leadership you've done.
Speaker 3 (49:22):
You've you had the program where it went to eight
straight bowl games and won ten twice. So if it
could be done once or twice or in the case
of the bowl games, eight straight times, then it can
be done again.

It's Mark Stoops starts to walk out to midfield to
shake the hand of coach O from LSU Kentucky doubles
the score on the Bayou Bengals Kentucky forty two, LSU
twenty one, and the Cats are perfect heading into a
battle of unbeatens at number two Georgia next Saturday afternoon
in Athens. So that was another one of the the
(54:00):
highlights of the past thirteen years and a big win
over decisive win over the LSU Tigers at Kroger Field,
and so many memorable moments. We've been reflecting on a
lot of them as we talk about the new era
that's coming in Kentucky football now with Logan Stenberg and
(54:22):
Ricky Lumpkin from our pregame show and both.
Speaker 9 (54:24):
Wore the blue and white.
Speaker 3 (54:26):
And also we're reflecting on some memorable moments and Logan
was a part of some of those with coach Stoops
and I said earlier today and you guys can expand
on this. The next coach needs to be somebody that
really believes in that you can win here and now
is just coming for a big paycheck. And there are
those people that are out there.
Speaker 27 (54:48):
I mean, especially you know, one guy's kind of on
the list right now with Kentucky boy played at Trinity.
I think he's high on the list currently. I think
that being from the state means something, especially when recruiting
in the state, especially after the season we just had
competing with Louisville and knowing like, hey man, I'm from
here and I coach here for a reason, that there's
something special about Lexington. This is where you want to go.
(55:09):
I think that that holds weight, especially in recruiting. Is
weird now obviously with the money aspect of it, but
I think it's still relationships still drive college football.
Speaker 28 (55:19):
I think it's more of you definitely need to believe
you can win here. It's been proven by multiple coaches.
I've been here. This is a state, this is a team,
this is a program. These are fans that expect you
to win and know you can win because it has
been done. If you come in looking for a check
or whatnot, you might not get the results you want.
But if you come in showing that you want to win,
your players feed off that. Players look at their head coach.
(55:40):
They go as their head coach goes. So if you're
as a head coach, can show that this is what
we need to do to win. We're gonna be tough,
nos this, that, and the other. You're gonna have a
great product on the field.
Speaker 3 (55:49):
And there's when a new coach comes in, there's usually
a little bit of a of a honeymoon period that
you can trade on and so you have a little
bit of time to kind of because it takes a
little time to put your stamp on a program, doesn't it, Ricky.
Speaker 28 (56:02):
It definitely does. It definitely takes a little time to
put your stamp on the program. But at the same time,
I want to say this, I'd like a head coach
come in and be really hard than soft, because if
you're hard when you come in the standards set, if
you're soft and then try to try to be hard,
the players are gonna look he's switching up on them.
You are fake, you aren't really like that, and then
you're not gonna have that buy in that you're looking for.
Speaker 27 (56:23):
I think the buffer period gets smaller and smaller as
college football goes on and progresses and turns into the NFL.
I think you gotta have results pretty soon. I mean,
maybe you give them a year, but I'll be honest
with you, I think that buffer period gets super small,
especially when you have a full offseason. Now, whoever we
hire with the next week, hopefully they have an entire
offseason to get that team ready. So when he results quick, Yeah.
Speaker 3 (56:44):
That is the Again, it's kind of cycling back to
what we're talking about. It It is more of a
business where for sure, for players as well as coaches.
Speaker 27 (56:50):
Now for sure, I mean, these guys only have four
maybe five years to prove what they can do and
get to that next level. They're gonna go to a university.
I think that they can showcase those talents and having
a head coach that is going to put that on
display is important and that that translates to wins and
results on the football And Ricky, one thing.
Speaker 3 (57:06):
You're gonna have is a tremendously passionate fan base whoever
the new coach is here and a network of former
players and all of them both are gonna be all
in to try to do whatever it takes to help
the new coach get off on the right foot.
Speaker 28 (57:21):
Oh, everyone's gonna be on all in. I know the
fan base is gonna be up loud, ready to go,
especially in that first game of the season, because that's
what Big Blue Nation does and it's been like that
since I was a kid.
Speaker 9 (57:30):
Here in six.
