Welcome back into the UK Healthcare Mark Stoop Show ahead
of the season opener on Saturday. The coach is alongside,
and if you're a football player football coach, you can't
wait to get to game one, can you?
Speaker 3 (02:54):
It seems like a awful long preseason, Tom, that's for sure.
I mean we had a lot of work to do.
You know, it starts all the way back last winter.
But you know this summer. It's been a lot of work,
a lot of fun, and it's time to go tee
it up and go play somebody else.
Speaker 2 (03:09):
Talk to Ty Bryant this summer and he made the
comment that he said, nobody we remember what it felt
like walking off that field in the last game last year,
and we're committed to not feel in that way again.
It seems like a very focused group.
Speaker 3 (03:23):
Yeah, without a doubt. I think, you know, we have
a good blend. You know, we have some young guys
that are very talented, that are very good people, good players,
and then we have a lot of experience. You know,
I think we've you know, got guys like Tie that
that are returning that are really good leaders and good people.
And then you know, we have a good good addition
(03:44):
of some transfer portal guys that are experienced, played a
lot of football, and it's very business like. I think
these guys like being around each other, the coaches like
being around them. It's been a lot of good positive
energy in the building. And the players are are fun
to coach. So it's a good recipe.
Speaker 2 (04:01):
You used to give him a break of training camp.
You take him maybe to a local pool or something.
This guys. This time, you guys went away at a
full blown retreat, and that is part of the reason
for that, because you've got to get fifty new fifty
plus people incorporated.
Speaker 3 (04:16):
That's part of it. I just wanted to continue to
build the camaraderie and uh, you know, the the leadership
training and and just be very intentional about it. We've
done an awful lot of work. Coach Dean Hood has
done a lot to help me with that, and it
was it was a very big success. I really enjoyed it.
You know, sometimes you feel like it could be you know,
(04:38):
just a lot of work and you know what I mean.
But this it was easy. It was good and as
far as easy, like the transportation and getting there and
and not taking up too much at the player's time.
But but you know, we just got to spend more
quality time with each other. You know. We we had
some meetings up there, we had some team building exercises
on a on a light day or an off day
(04:59):
form so it was just very good.
Speaker 2 (05:01):
How has the chemistry piece of it come together with
so many new faces.
Speaker 3 (05:05):
Yeah, very very pleased, very happy with the way things
are going that way. As I mentioned, I think this
team really likes being around each other. The you know,
the guys that are older or are very focused, you know,
and and you know the same with the young players.
They've they've been a great you know mentors to the
(05:27):
to the younger players, and you know they're following their
lead and as I mentioned, just very businesslike, you know,
a great approach. But they do care about each other
and they're very unselfish.
Speaker 2 (05:37):
You play a team in your first game that's the
preseason favorite to win their league. Guy, I think it
was thirteen votes in the AP pole. So the lead
a very well regarded team, one of the more potent offenses,
particularly with their passing game in the country last year.
Speaker 3 (05:53):
Yeah, without a doubt. You know, they return their their
quarterback who kind of everything in their offense runs through him.
You know, they they're very effective at running the ball,
but you know they could definitely throw it around. Two
very good receivers one returns, one transfer, both all MAC
players a year ago. Heck, they won two Power for
(06:14):
Conference games last year and going on the road and
beating a SEC team in Mississippi State beat him quite convincingly,
and then it showed their resilience beaten Pitt with a
six overtime victory in a bowl game. So you know,
obviously this team is is you know, got to They
have a winning culture, They've won a lot of games,
(06:36):
they have a lot of continuity, So it's gonna be
a great challenge.
Speaker 2 (06:39):
I'm hoping to boost their running game with a guy
that you had in your program last year. Yeah, trade them.
Speaker 3 (06:44):
Yeah. Chip is a great young man. You know, unfortunately
wasn't you know, healthy for us a year ago, but
went healthy. He's he's a very powerful guy. That's explosive,
and you know, I'm sure he's you know, he he
has waited a long time and uh, you know, I
hope for his sake that he stays healthy and he
has a great season. Obviously I want to play very
good this Saturday against him, but I know he's going
(07:07):
to get very tough yards. He's a very good person,
like I mentioned, and just a really good player, and
he's he's gonna he's gonna have some tough yards, that's
for darn sure. Uh, we just got to make sure
we bring a lot of bodies, you know, to to
you know, to the party, you know, because he's gonna
make some people miss he's a very physical guy.
Speaker 2 (07:27):
This is the UK Healthcare Mark Stubs Show. You can
set us in questions on x at UK Sports Network.
You can post on the Facebook page for Kentucky Football
or get us a call on the Clark's Pumping Shop
phone line eight five nine two eight oho two two

(07:47):
We'll be right back on the UK Sports Network. Kentucky
and Toledo Saturday. The game's presented by Kroger. There are
some tickets still available. We'll go to UK Athletics dot
com to take advantage of those on this Labor Day weekend.
As we are visiting with coach Mark Stoops. Before we
(08:09):
get to some fan questions, let me ask you another one.
What area or stat position, group, whatever it might be,
would you rank number one in terms of wanting to
see improvement?
Speaker 3 (08:20):
Well, I think you know it's been no mystery. I've
mentioned the offensive line several times. I think you know,
I you know it starts up front. You know we
have to be better upfront. We didn't meet our standard
a year ago, you know, with the offensive line, and
you know probably the defensive line as well, you know,
and you know we have to be more physical and
(08:41):
get back to that physical style. You know. With that,
you know, hopefully it'll open up some more things in
the past game. And you know, it's it's hard to
put it on any one person quarterback. You know, it's
one person back there, but you have to be very
good around him. I don't think, you know, I know
we didn't do a good enough job a year ago
protect him and putting them in a position to be successful.
(09:03):
But it's fair to say that we have to play
better at that position as well.
Speaker 2 (09:05):
That was our Alumni Hall question of the week. Now
fans give us your take on it. Your answer to
that question by visiting at Alumnia Hall UK on X
and respond with your answer for a chance to win
a gift card courtesy of Alumni Hall. You announced officially
that Zach Calzada is going to be the starting QB
(09:26):
on Saturday. As you've had a chance to have Zach
into program and work with him, what are the skills
that you like best about what he brings to the position.
Speaker 3 (09:36):
Well, he's got a very strong arm, you know, obviously
you know that that helps, but you know, I think
experience is a big deal. You know, he's been around,
He's seen a lot of things, and you know, I
think I'm excited to just go watch him play. I
always feel like, you know, he always steps it up
a notch in game like situations and scrimmages and things
(09:57):
of that nature as well when you're just out there
putting the ball down and in playing. But he has
to play within himself as well, Like like I mentioned
in the previous segment, you know, you have to have
a good supporting cast. You know, we have to put
him in a position to be successful and play good
up front, you know, have the balance that we're looking
for and try to keep people off balance.
Speaker 2 (10:18):
Oh it's fear unless you know you've got you know,
Tim Couch back there or something. The best place the
quarterback can start is not throw it to the other team.
Speaker 3 (10:25):
Yeah, without a doubt, you know, I think you know,
that's one area. You know, as you talk a lot
about keys to success, turnover margin is certainly at the
top of the list for me. You know, we we
you know, have to do a better job in that category,
both you know, taking getting takeaways and protecting the football
better and.
Speaker 2 (10:44):
You've I think it was at the kickoff luncheon Louisville
a week ago. Today, talked up Cutter Bowlie, and I
assume that's because he you asked him to do certain
things and he's gone out and done.
Speaker 3 (10:56):
Them exactly right, Tom. You know, you know with with Cutter,
he's a richer freshman. And I think the last two weeks,
last ten days, you just I've really seen a jump
in him. And you know, that's kind of what I
challenged him with halfway through camp. We had a good
discussion one day and and I think he was just
you know, overthinking things and and you know, worrying about
(11:19):
things outside of his control. And I've seen a different person,
you know, the last ten days, two weeks, and and
I really love what I'm seeing out of him. He
just has been very confident. He's been in command, and
you know, he's having more fun. He's just enjoying being
out there playing and letting the game come to him.
You know, we've all seen his ability that's never been
(11:42):
in question. And you know, I've always had, you know,
a lot of confidence in him. It's just a matter
of when, you know when he's going to put it
all together and he's started to do that and that
that excites me. Yeah.
Speaker 2 (11:53):
I guess it was Tuesday last week at practice. I
was sitting there one of the benches while Bush was
finishing up his media session. So a couple of the
players that were going to talk to the reporters and
came over and Cutter sat down beside. I mean, he
just started talking about how much more comfortable he felt then,
how much he had rediscovered how much he enjoyed playing football.
Speaker 3 (12:13):
Yeah, exactly. I mean, these guys have a lot of
pressure on him. He was a highly recruited guy out
of high school and and you know that comes with
a lot of pressure. He's a hometown guy. He cares
about the state, he cares about this university, and you know,
he has a lot of pressure on him. But you know,
I just, like I said, I just love his approach lately.
And you know, he's always been a remarkable young man.
(12:35):
It's just you know, I think you know, you could
see the stress level on him at times, and now
he's just out there playing, but he's also doing the
little things, you know, and he's in a great command
and so you know, I just again, I like what
I'm seeing a lot and just want to continue to
see that growth.
Speaker 2 (12:53):
Talk to us a little bit about the two running
back transfers who are going to lead the way for
your run game. Dante Deldll from Nebraska. Seth McGowan coming
in from New Mexico State but was with coach Bull
Ward at Oklahoma when he started his career. What in
particular do you like about how those two guys go
about their job.
Speaker 3 (13:13):
Well, number, you know Dante, they're both very physical runners.
You know, Dante's a very big person and you know,
better vision than you know you would think for a big,
big guy. I mean, he has very good feet, good vision,
and uh, you know, plays very physical and you know,
and and you know Seth is another one that's a
complete player. They both are good out of the backfield.
(13:35):
You know, I think Seth again, they both have a
lot of experience and uh, you know, Seth is a
is a threat catching the ball. And so I like
what I'm seeing from those two.
Speaker 2 (13:46):
And again to break It's the UK health Care Mark
Stoop Show and we'll continue in just a moment here
on the UK Sports Network when we are finished up
here on the Mark Stoops Show, presented by UK Healthcare
stick Around for BBN Radio, presented by Clark's Pumping Shop.
(14:06):
It is a one hour insiders look at UK athletics.
Darren Hendrick is the host and tonight he'll be joined
by Logan Stenberg from our UK Sports Network pregame team
played in the O line for coach Stoops and then
Braden Weiser from the UK Rifle Team.
Speaker 3 (14:22):
Logan was just a practice, I just thought half hour ago.
Speaker 2 (14:27):
I hope some of the guys new and old bring
a little of Logan's edge.
Speaker 3 (14:33):
We were talking about that today. So he's the only
one that could get away with that, you know, because
he played so good and so physical for a long
time that I put up with a few of his penalties, but.
Speaker 2 (14:46):
Because he got so much done when on the other plays.
Speaker 3 (14:50):
But we weren't undisciplined when he did it, because it
was kind of I think it was intentional by him.
Speaker 2 (14:55):
Yeah, I believe that you got a couple of former
players you've added his great assistance and one of them
from the line.
Speaker 3 (15:02):
Yeah, bunch of stallings. Uh, you know, really happy to
have Bunchie in the program and give some young guys
an opportunity to grow in our profession. He's been around
here locally working at some high schools, and so very
very happy to have Bunchie along with us. Off Corker
another one that was a great safety for us, great
young man. They're both just terrific people. You know. They're
(15:24):
great ambassadors to the University of Kentucky, They're great role
models to our players, and so really grateful to have
them on the staff.
Speaker 2 (15:31):
We're having a little bit of a phone issue at
the moment to apologize for the technical issues. So for
the time being, Tom.
Speaker 3 (15:38):
You're supposed to save those technical issues after maybe if
we're sitting up here some Monday on or after a
really rough game, you know, so let's have the technical
issues then, Okay we haven't had Yeah.
Speaker 2 (15:51):
Optimistic, Uh, we will tell you to since then sending
some questions on X and we can take them that
way until we get the phones worked out quick. And
here's one from Larry at UK Sports Network. Could you
ask coach to explain the new rule on injuries and
having to take a time out? Larry's Danny Corbin listening.
(16:12):
I saw this come up in the Iron State Kansas
State game set.
Speaker 3 (16:14):
Yeah, I did, and I mentioned it at the press
conference today. You know, the new rules state that if
the player is injured, then he has to be on
the ground, you know, before the ball is spotted for play.
So with the tempo offenses, they you know, they have
a tendency to rush these things in rush and put
the ball down. But you know, as I mentioned, you know,
(16:35):
some of these players they're like, you know, very amped
up and have a bunch of adrenaline running through their body,
and sometimes they're injured and they don't feel it, you know,
for a second or you know, two, three, four seconds.
And I think that's you know, to me observing that
the other day, it looked like somebody was cramping up
and he got up, tried to jog off and then
(16:56):
went down, and you know it cost them a time out.
And I don't think you know that that I don't
think that was the rule. You know, the rule wasn't
meant for that type of play. You know, that was
legitimately an injured player. But the rules are the rules.
I think the officials have some discretion in that. But
it'll be interesting to see how it plays out throughout
the year.
Speaker 2 (17:16):
Is that the only significant rule change or emphasis point
of emphasis for this year.
Speaker 3 (17:21):
Yeah, I mean there's some little things, minor things with
just you know how also on this I think the
other thing that's that's obvious is like the defensive substitution
as well. You know, we have a chance to match personnel,
but sometimes you know, defenses do that on purpose and
go out very slow and go out and tap somebody,
and you know, it just really slows the game down.
And I think you know they're they're also trying to
(17:43):
monitor that. Again, that's not in the spirit of the rule.
You want to be able to match personnel, but uh
not you know it, you know, intentionally slowing down the
pace of the game.
Speaker 2 (17:54):
And then as Larry did your questions on X two
at UK Sports Network while we uh work getting the
phone deal worked out for you the matchup with Toledo,
we talked about Gleason, their quarterback and the strength of
their passing attack. Secondary should be a strength for your guys.
(18:15):
What about the pass rush up front because some new
faces there for us.
Speaker 3 (18:19):
Yeah, I think you know them. They were very They
had a really good secondary. That's most of their secondaries back.
They have three corners, three safeties. They really are deep
and talented in the secondary. They played extremely well up
front last year. They did lose a few of those
guys to some graduation, and but I'm sure they replaced
them with some very good players as well. And you know,
(18:40):
they have a bunch of seniors and juniors on their team,
you know, so they have quite a bit of experience.
But for us, our guys up front, I've been I've
been policed. I think it's it's going to be by committee.
But I feel like we're deep there as you know,
you know, you feel like you have some depth. But
the minute you get one or two injuries and that
rotation starts to you know, shorten up a bit. So
(19:02):
hopefully we'll continue to stay healthy. But I think, you know,
that's a key for us to stay healthy as well,
is try to get that depth, try to get that
rotation and rotate a bunch of guys in there. But Khalil,
you know, the addition of mcketh, you know, is a
big one. You know, we got some some Jackson and
Sam and cam Old's and so I feel like we've
added some some help in the past Russian category as well.
Speaker 2 (19:24):
And it was back in media day coach White Brad White,
defensive coordinator talked about how it might be different for
fans this year in terms of not one guy, you know,
like a Maxwell Harrison or a Diane Walker at his
best maybe plays a lot of more plays. Where one
guy is not going to play a huge number of plays,
There's going to be a lot more rotation of fresh legs.
Speaker 3 (19:46):
Yeah, and I think that's you know, key for you know,
obviously a very grueling schedule that we have as well,
so you know, it helps you well keeping guys fresh,
but it also helps with the development of your program
as well.
Speaker 2 (19:57):
Talk to us a little bit about the linebacker line.
Start with the two guys inside. I guess Rainer and
the Fari slated to start.
Speaker 3 (20:04):
Yeah, David and Alex are two guys that have been around,
you know, for a while. They have good experience. They
both have been, you know, very good leaders, you know.
So you know, I think that you know, it starts
with those guys. And Grant Godfrey is another one that's
that's really coming along and you know, we feel like
he's getting better and better, you know. So and then
Antoine is a guy with the high ceiling. You know
(20:27):
that it needs to continue to develop physically and get stronger.
So he can withstand the SEC schedule, but super athletic
and very talented young player. And so you know, I
feel like we have a good rotation there. And then
on the outside yeah, g yeah, guys Sam Green and
Cam Olts or guys you know that are uh, you know,
(20:48):
really talented players and could you know we needed some
help in the past rush area, you know. And and
Steven Souls is the guy that gets better and better.
He plays relentless. I love the edge in the attitude,
uh that Steven plays with. And so we have some
bodies there and should be able to keep some guys
fresh there as well.
Speaker 2 (21:05):
There's been so much focus on on the new faces
coming in, but you do have some guys coming back
that will play key roles. We've touched on many of them.
Another one question, she's Scott at the Nickel.
Speaker 3 (21:17):
Yeah, Q. Scott is a is a guy that we again,
I feel like he has a very high upside. You know,
he's a guy that's getting better and better with every opportunity.
I think you know, you and I have talked about
that through the years, that that's a position, that's a
very unique position, it's very challenging. There's many different techniques
and yeah, you got to have a wide variety of
(21:37):
skill sets there, almost like a hybrid yeah things. Yeah,
you've got to do a lot of things. You got
to be able to cover very athletic, shifty guys, but
they also have to have some savvy to them there.
They're going to be blitzers, you know, and you know
they're coverages. There's a lot of little adjustments and tweaks
and their coverages. So there's a lot to it. You know,
I mentioned it today, but there's like three guys there
(21:58):
that were you know, wrote Hayton, Uh, you know that
that you know Jade and Smith as well. You know
that could be you know, a role player there and
as well. I feel like he's getting better and better
with every opportunity.
Speaker 2 (22:11):
Just because Senators to underscore just how good one of
your great ones Mike Edwards was it just so seamlessly
would transition down to that spot to safety. Probably could
have played corner if you needed him to.
Speaker 3 (22:21):
Well exactly, he's just the ballplayer and you know that position.
You get your nose around the football lot and Mike
was a guy that was always involved and yeah, like
you said, we can move from safety to to Nickel
and you know that's that's you know very he was
one of my all time favorites.
Speaker 2 (22:37):
We are halfway home here on the Lead Troop or
on the UK Healthcare Mark Stoop Show, First game Jitters,
UK Healthcare Mark Stoop Show. We'll be right back. This
is the UK Sports Network. Welcome again. It's the Mark
Stoop Show, presented by UK Healthcare. And we talked out
(23:00):
our Alumni Hall Question of the Week earlier, so remember fans,
you can respond to that, give us your take on
the question and visit at Alumni Hall UK on X
and respond with your answer for a chance to win
a gift card courtesy of Alumni Hall. You can now
give us a call at eight five nine two eight
(23:22):
o kats or eight hundred six oh six four to
two sixty three. I guess it's a little technical issue, Billy,
our producer will talk you through it when you call in,
but we can get callers on the air now, so
let's do that with Carter. You're on with coach tubes.
Hey Carter, go ahead, Carter.
Speaker 4 (23:43):
Hey, coach, how are you doing?
Speaker 3 (23:44):
I'm doing great? Carter? How about yourself?
Speaker 4 (23:48):
Pretty good? I had a question about Daunte down delle yep,
how's he been doing in practice? So for statistic why
he was one? He was probably a top ten running
back last year and I was wondering if that would
carry over to the SEC based off practice so far.
Speaker 3 (24:09):
Well thanks Carter, pretty dialed in. How old are you? Carter?
Speaker 4 (24:14):
Thirteen?
Speaker 3 (24:15):
Where you're from?
Speaker 4 (24:18):
Maria, Kentucky, Bria.
Speaker 3 (24:20):
I love it you're playing football.
Speaker 4 (24:24):
I wish the school obviously doesn't have a football team.
Speaker 3 (24:27):
I got you, all right, Well, maybe we'll see you
down the line. All right, all right, all right, But
Dante has done a very good job. I'm very high
on him. As I mentioned in a previous segment. He's
a very big running back, very strong, but he has
better vision than you would think, you know, for some
of the big guys are just you know, guys that
(24:48):
plow in there and all that. But Dante has very
good feet and good vision, and uh, I hope it translates.
You know, football's football, and uh you know, with running backs,
you could kind of point him in the right direction
and uh, you know, give him a lot of good
coaching with what our guy does. But sometimes it's just uh,
you know, between them and God you know, it's God
(25:08):
given ability and uh, and you know, sometimes you just
got to turn them loose and uh, you know, and
and Dante is uh is like that. I think, you know,
when once the lights come on in a in a game,
like you know, we're in a game, but in our
scrimmages and things again of that nature, he really takes
it up another level. So I'm excited to watch him.
Carter probably a lot like you are.
Speaker 2 (25:30):
He as saw him break away once and one of
the regular weekday practices and then I think in the
Spring showcase he did that. He's got a little more pop.
If he breaks through, then people might.
Speaker 3 (25:42):
Think exactly, you know, and that that's kind of what
I'm talking about because you you stand up next to
him and he's a big, big dude, he's a big
human and uh and so you know, but then then
he gets to that second level and he has another gear.
Speaker 2 (25:55):
Speaking of breaking away, Sean sends in a question on
x at UK Sports at Work, barry And was always
a threat in the return game, kickoff, return game. Do
the Cats have anyone returning kicks or punts that can
take it to the house.
Speaker 3 (26:09):
Yeah, that's it, you know, that's a great question because
barry On certainly did do that. He was a threat
every time. And I think Jay, you know, Bula Ware,
you know, does a remarkable job, you know with coaching
our special teams, and so you know, we we definitely,
you know, we'll see you know, we we anticipate that.
We feel like we have some explosive guys and you know,
(26:30):
and you know we'll see you know. You know, Kendrick
Law is a guy that will be returning kicks and
he definitely has another gear. He's very strong, he's very
good with the ball in his hands. And Ty Bryant
is a guy that will be doing the punt returns
and uh, you know, ties a very good athlete and
does a really good job of catching him. I'll be
honest with you. In punts, you know, the punt returns
(26:51):
in our league, it's very difficult. You know, these punters
are good, put big, you know, hang time on it
and get down there. So a lot of times at
fielding it is extremely important. And that's not to say
that you're never going to get chances, because you do.
Sometimes somebody will hit a bad punter, I'll kick their
coverage and you know you've got an opportunity for big returns,
but actually fielding it is is a huge point of
(27:12):
emphasis for us this year, you know, last year and
a couple of critical games. I remember an SEC game.
We're on the road, one one score game and have
an opportunity to get the ball probably out to the fifty.
We have a chance to return it at the forty
and there was nobody in front, you know, for at
least ten and instead it hits the ground, it goes
back to the twenty. I mean that that's a monumental mistake. First,
(27:34):
that's the thirty thirty yard difference, you know, so you know,
just things like that. We got to get better at.
Speaker 2 (27:40):
What are the rest of the kicking game for Coach Bull?
Where Aiden laarross your punter? How's he doing?
Speaker 3 (27:46):
Aiden's got a huge leg, you know, just again watching
them today, you know, hit some amazing shots, you know,
just you know, very big, high hang time, and you
know he's been a very big weapon for us.
Speaker 2 (28:00):
The place kicking.
Speaker 3 (28:01):
Yeah, I mean we got a couple guys that we're
still looking at, but Big Legs been very consistent and
you know, you know we'll see I mean, we need
to have that consistency. We've been blessed with some pretty
consistent kickers around here, and you know, I'm you know,
just like I said many times this week, I'm excited
(28:22):
to watch these guys go play well.
Speaker 2 (28:25):
Colway, you talked a lot about the strength of his leg,
but you've got to be able to marry that to
the at least close to the Austin McGinnis or Rainer accuracy.
Speaker 3 (28:35):
Yeah. Rainer and Austin were two great ones for us,
very consistent, you know. But Cowway has a big leg,
and you know he's a young guy, he's a richer freshman,
but heck he can he can hit it, you know,
from you know, sixty sixty one, and so you know, hopefully,
you know, he'll be a good weapon for us.
Speaker 2 (28:55):
Yeah, I mean that would be a if you could
have the trust in him to be to get, say,
to the forty yard line and feel you're in range.
Speaker 3 (29:03):
Yeah, I mean, nice said, it's a big weapon. Yeah exactly.
I mean, we're still looking to have the consistency that
we need there. But he has a big leg, and
again I think he has a great upside.
Speaker 2 (29:14):
Join us outside Gate four at Kroger Field for our
Jack Burferd Chevrolet Countdown to kickoff coverage of Kentucky and Toledo.
For the opener coverage, we'll start at ten thirty am
this Saturday, and then we'll have the call of all
the action on the UK Sports Network. This is the
Mark Stoop Show presented by UK Healthcare and we'll continue.
(29:35):
Send in your questions on x at UK Sports Network
or give us a call. This is the UK Sports Network.
The segments left on this edition of The Mark Stoop
Show presented by UK Healthcare, and let's go back to
the Clark's Pumping Shop phone line. It is our buddy
Madison from down in Henderson. Madison, what do you have
for coach stoops?
Speaker 5 (29:54):
How you doing coach stops?
Speaker 3 (29:57):
I'm doing great, Madison? How about you?
Speaker 5 (30:02):
It treated me fine. I tell you this is my
twenty fifth year as a season ticket holder. Can you
believe that?
Speaker 3 (30:09):
That's amazing? And uh, you're You're a great friend and
I enjoy talking to you every week and we appreciate
your support through the years.
Speaker 5 (30:19):
Yeah, well I appreciate, I appreciate you and hopefully you
will continue.
Speaker 3 (30:24):
Thanks.
Speaker 5 (30:24):
I've got a couple of things for you. One, what
what kind of grade would you give our offensive line
even though you had not played a game yet.
Speaker 3 (30:34):
Yeah, that's that's tough there, Madison, because you know, I
like the work that they're putting. Sorry to cut you off,
I like it when you stay on the line. Let's
just have a little conversation here massive, you know, I
know there's going to be two parts, so that way
I don't have to have Tom write it down for me. No,
I'm just kidding.
Speaker 5 (30:50):
And then too, what kind of what kind of uh?
But Bence Marll not being part of your staff anymore,
do you think it's kind of strange playing the Toledo
Gain this early with him not being there anymore.
Speaker 3 (31:06):
Yeah, so the two questions, you know, with the with
the offensive line, it's hard for me to give him
a grade, like you said, without playing a game. I'll
tell you this, I give him an a you know,
for for the work that they put in, you know,
and they've just I just like their approach. They're very
mature men. They've been around for a long time, They've
played a lot of football, they care a lot about
(31:28):
this team, and and I just appreciate how hard of
work that they put in. And with Vince no I mean,
it's not strange at all for me to play Toledo,
you know, without that. You know, and again I've been
on record and I have said it many times, just
greatly appreciate Vince, the friendship that we had and the
(31:49):
work that he put in at the University of Kentucky.
But you know, it's time to move on. And you know,
and no one person, you know, our players know that.
And you know, whether it's me sitting here coaching team
or you know, any anybody that we have in our organization,
you know, what matters is the team, and you know
that's what our focus is on.
Speaker 2 (32:08):
Madison. Thank you for questions. Brandon Sens went in at
UK Sports Network on x We were talking about the
ty Bryant returning punts and Brandon says, what factors go
into making the decision when you're selecting who you're going
to use in the return game?
Speaker 3 (32:23):
Yeah, well, part of it was with Tye, you know,
and I referenced it today in in my press conference
as well. You know, Tye has a is a big
background and playing baseball, you know, so he has a
good beat on it, you know, off the punter's leg
and off his foot, and you know, tracking the ball,
and as I just mentioned in the previous section our
segment that that you know, feeling the football is at
(32:46):
a prem you know, it's it's extremely important, and we
just let too many balls drop last year and we
lost field positions. So you know, we do have several options.
But Ty's been been very good through camp.
Speaker 2 (32:58):
And it's a different skill set for kicking kickoff returns
and punt returns, I know, talking to the legend here,
Derrick Abney, for him it was about the first step
as a punt returner, but it's different for the skill
set needed for kick returns.
Speaker 3 (33:11):
Yeah, the kick returners, I think, you know, they have
a little more time, you know, and to get underneath it.
And and you know with the punt returners, I mean,
you know, they're catching the ball and there's guys in
their face and there's you know, people at their feet
in all around them, and you know, and heck, we
had an incident this this this camp where guys were
(33:31):
just competing and working extremely hard in both the gunners
and with the guys trying to block and keep them
off the return man. But we had a hell of
a collision. It was an accident, but I mean, you know,
I mean it just you know, took a violent hit,
you know, and that's something that I can't have in practice.
But I wasn't very happy about it. But those are
some of the things that punt returners have to deal with.
Speaker 2 (33:51):
It's the Mark Stoobs Show, presented by UK Healthcare. We're
taking your calls on the Clark's Pumping Shop phone line
or you could send it a question on x at
UK Sports networker on the Kentucky Football Facebook page. Our
UK Sports Network colleague Dick Gabriel text to be a
note and a reminder we can talk about this. Darien Kinnard,
(34:12):
one of your former members of the Big Blue Wall,
got traded yesterday from the Eagles to the Packers. Gabe
as a Packers fan, and this must make the Packers
now the favorite to win the Super Bowl, given Darien
gets a ring every year.
Speaker 3 (34:26):
Yeah, Darien's three for three. That's not a bad That's
not bad deal at three super Bowl rings. Pretty good deal, Yes,
it is.
Speaker 2 (34:35):
That was you know, a special run there with that
group of you know, guys like Darien and Fortner and
Logan we talked about earlier. Yeah, Land and Young and
Drake Jackson and missing some names, your bunchie. Do you
see a similar mentality forming in this group you have?
Speaker 3 (34:53):
Now, I definitely see the mentality, you know, and and
I see really good people that that you know, that care,
you know, care about the organization, and you know, that's
all you can ask for. They're gonna they're gonna work
extremely hard and they care, and uh, you know so,
but you know it is. We wish Darien all the best.
Going back to that, I joked about his Super Bowl
(35:15):
rings that that's pretty good, you know, stat for him.
There's people that play a long time that don't get
a ring, and he has three of them already, so uh,
we wish him the best in in Green Bay. But yeah,
our old line, you know, they care to him, they're
working hard. Like I said, they're they're guys that have
played a lot of football.
Speaker 2 (35:31):
Let's talk about the two returning guys in that group.
Jaggers now over at the center position. How has that
worked for him?
Speaker 3 (35:38):
Yeah, Jagger has done a very good job. We're a
better line with him playing that center, you know. And
you got a Brahm at one guard and Farmer at
the other and Farmers the other. Returning guy, and and
jalen Is has been very impressive. You know he is uh,
you know, a pound for pound, one of the better
(35:59):
players on our football team. And you know he's uh,
he's you know, he's one of those guys inside you
know that that has bad intentions. You know, on every
snap he's trying to get after some people. And you know,
I just like the way that the group is playing
in general.
Speaker 2 (36:15):
I'm going to get to our final break. One segment left.
It's the Mark Stoop Show, presented by UK Healthcare and
this is the UK Sports Network. Welcome back into the show.
Let's get right back to a call on the Clark's
Pumping Shop phone line. Travis over Mount Sterling Way, what
do you have for us?
Speaker 3 (36:34):
Hey, coach Hi Travis.
Speaker 5 (36:38):
First, I just want to say thank you for everything
that you've done.
Speaker 3 (36:42):
Appreciate and the football team.
Speaker 5 (36:45):
Really appreciate you.
Speaker 2 (36:47):
I have two questions. The first question, I guess referee
makes a bad call in a game.
Speaker 5 (36:54):
Do you know, like later on if that was a
bad call or a good call?
Speaker 3 (36:59):
Yes, you know a lot of times during the game
I may I may not agree with the official. Have
you ever seen that? Yeah? Oh yeah, yeah, So from
time to time, I may not agree with him, but
believe it or not, sometimes when I go watch the film,
he was right. So I'm joking. I'm joking. Whether I cannot,
(37:26):
I cannot. I like holding onto my money, I cannot
talk about a specific call or I'll get fined. But
but there are times, just in general, I'll turn in
plays that that that I need some interpretation on and
and they'll send it back with a voice over. And
you know, let's be honest. I mean, everybody makes mistakes
(37:47):
and we have to be good enough to overcome those
things that happens. And so you know, I think, you know,
I know this. I feel very comfortable that the league
works extremely hard to be consistent, to be fair. It's
you know, there's there's always going to be mistakes, and
you know we make them, They make them, and you
just have to be good enough to overcome them.
Speaker 2 (38:07):
What's your other question, Travis is do you think the
offense is going to be much better this year?
Speaker 3 (38:12):
Yeah? I definitely do, Travis. You know, as I mentioned
through the talking season that you know, we understand that
we better be and we have to be and and
I'm you know, confident that we will be the players
who worked extremely hard. I think it's very you know important,
you know, to have some continuity. As I mentioned with
the coordinators, all returning is a very big deal to
(38:33):
have a quarterback you know that has some experience, you know,
Cutters the second year in in the system, and Zach's
new to it but played a lot of football, you know.
So I think the continuity is important. You know, we
have good players. We went into portal and and got
some good additions, and you know, the players that we
returned I'm excited about. So yeah, yeah, Travis, I definitely
(38:56):
feel like we'll be.
Speaker 2 (38:56):
Better, Travis, Thank you very much. Saturday is Kentucky to
Lee Games presented by Kroger. You guys opened with the
Rockets in twenty nineteen.
Speaker 3 (39:04):
Yeah, Tom, really good game in nineteen. You know again,
I mean, this is a team that has picked to
win the MAC. I've saw several people predict that they
have a chance to be in the playoffs out of
the non power five, you know, the group of five
you know represent representative and you know the heck, they
(39:25):
have ap votes in the top twenty five. I think
thirteen or more votes to be in the top twenty five.
Right now. So there's people that think an awful lot
of them, and I do as well. You know, coach
has been there for a long time. They have great
continuity on their staff, and in nineteen we had a
heck of a game going there as well. In that
year Tom, prior to Terry Wilson being hurt, I really
(39:47):
feel like that was going to be one of our
better teams. And it ended up heck, we went through
two or three quarterbacks and then ended up with Lynn.
That was Lynn's year, right, Oh yeah, and you know
found something with Lynn and great job that Eddie Grant
did that year with creating enough you know to go
win eight games and win a Bowl game, you know,
(40:08):
with down quite a few quarterbacks. But prior to Terry
getting hurt, I really was so fired up about that
team in that year because I think Terry was really
explosive early in camp and in the first game or so,
and so that injury really set us back. But that
was before Terry got hurt and we went into that halftime,
I want to say, fourteen to fourteen, and then we
(40:31):
got to turn over in the third quarter and kind
of pulled away pretty good in the second half, but
it's always a good game. And as I mentioned them
going to Mississippi State last year and really beating them
pretty good, and then you know, winning versus Pitt So
they're no strangers playing Power four teams and they're very
good and they're the type of team that you have
to go beat them. They're not going to make mistakes,
(40:52):
you know. They they know who they are, they know
what they do. The quarterback, you know, everything runs through him,
and we have to go play well.
Speaker 2 (41:01):
Best of luck on Saturday.
Speaker 3 (41:02):
Thank you, Tom, I.
Speaker 2 (41:03):
