(05:09):
alongside. You gave your guys acouple of days off. They're off tomorrow
too. Yeah, we we.We came here to grab something to eat.
I just wanted to make sure theyhad a good meal tonight, and
no we did. Last night theywere all at Drake's concert and by the
(05:30):
way, anyone was there will tellyou unbelievable show stage. He called Rob
up on the stage. I wentearly and met with him. He was
in our locker room. So hehad the whole locker room and his man
Future had my office. And youknow, let me tell you the neat
thing. They have a prayer circlethat they do before all their concerts and
(05:56):
he gets all the people that arewith him and they get in a circle
and he's in the middle and he'stalking and you know, praying for everybody.
And Chris Willard was there with meand he started talking about me.
I'm telling you, I got emotional. I had my head down because he
talks about the history, how longwe've known each other, and how when
(06:19):
he wasn't Drake that we supported himand he knew we were there for him,
and he said helped his confidence andall this stuff. But it was
just he is a superstar who's nevergotten away from who he is. He's
the same guy I met when hewas twenty five or twenty four whatever.
(06:41):
He was just getting off to GROSSIdo you remember some of you older people
that watched the GROSSI So it's amazing. He told me, Coach, you
know, I've been talking to Robsince he was like fourteen. I go
what I didn't even know? Andhe called Rob up on the stage and
(07:02):
the other guys. You know,it was just neat. The place was
packed packed, They were singing hissongs and he was so I can't begin.
He was so excited to be back. He told the story, and
this is true. I went tohis graduation. His mom was a teacher.
He promised her he'd finish, andI went up to Toronto kind of
(07:25):
snuck in and he didn't know Iwas there until the end, and I
gave him a scholarship to the Universityof Kentucky. I said, you might
as well do this now, nowthat you got your high school thing done,
let's go. So, you know, he reminded me of it.
Sometimes I don't know, I forgetstuff you do in her, you know,
in so many kind of situations. But so the team got to enjoy
(07:48):
it, and uh, you know, it was for me to be able
to see him. Uh. Heinvited us back to his home. Tom
you were there, Oh my goodness, what a house. Oh he said,
come back this year. So I'mlike, maybe we'll go back to
Toronto and do some charity work,do some clinics for the OVO, which
(08:11):
is his group, go to hishouse, will swim eat. How about
that? Was that crazy? Hesaid? I'll be there, though,
I said, we're gonna have todo it. Your guys have fared nicely
in some of the postseason awards thatcame out today. This was the Coaches
All SEC Team. Antoniover he deservedlymade the first team. Reid and Rob
(08:33):
were second team. Reid is theFreshman of the Year. Rob's the sixth
Man of the Year and very deservinghonors for all of those guys. I
think I was surprised. I thoughtJustin would make the All Freshman Team.
DJ made it with Robin Reed.I thought Justin would make it, but
(08:54):
he would have been the captain ofit. Yes, he's He's played so
much better. So congrats to allof those guys. And there'll be more
of these awards coming out in thecoming days. So you go back to
work tomorrow, don't know who you'regoing to play until after the game's on
Thursday night. So what do youtrying to get accomplished? Well? At
(09:15):
this meal, we showed some video. I showed ten unbelievable defensive stops we
made against Tennessee, and then Ishowed them ten plays where we attacked the
rim were strong. Some of thethrees we created ten possessions that were off
(09:37):
the charts and basically said that's whowe are now, that's us right there,
So that let's live up to that. And we're going to practice tomorrow
morning. We'll go twice tomorrow, more of us a scripting in the morning.
They don't have class. We'll goin the afternoon. We'll practice Wednesday
afternoon, and we're on our wayto Nashville. You were saying one of
(10:01):
the things we talked about after thegame Saturday, you were giving the guys
some time. I'll but you hopedTrey would do more work as far as
getting himself back. Is it thestamina of the main thing that he needs.
Yeah, I mean when you're notin the speed of the game,
like when you take two three weeksoff, or take two weeks off,
get hurt, take another three weeksoff. It took DJ some time to
(10:22):
get back, and so yeah,we need him back, you know.
And then there's things that we wantto add. Now we got three practices,
we got a couple after this weekend, you know, so you got
some time to if there are thingsyou want to add, or there's things
you want to really cover to makeus better. Now's the time. You
(10:48):
guys won the SEC tournament first year, for two years, finish the runner
up in twelve and fourteen. Well, let's do what happened in twelve.
Yeah, well, let's do thatagain. What do we do? We
finished what the final game, butthen won the big title and then fifteen
sixteen, seventeen eighteen. You wantit so well, and then Max's your
stop. We won the league bythree. I know everybody wants to push
(11:11):
that to the curb. That wasanother team that could have won this.
The COVID kind of got us offpoint. But you know what, I'm
feeling really good how this team,And I said everybody, they're built for
March. You gotta have some rimprotection. You gotta have some scorers who
can break down and go get abasket. You gotta be tough physically and
mentally, guys that are used tobeing chased. And now when we play
(11:37):
games, now everyone has something tolose. You're not going to play a
team that said, well, wehave nothing to lose. Oh yeah,
you do. Your season ends,So now we're all zero zero one game,
let's go. Postseason coverage on theUK Sports Network of Kentucky's postseason It's

yesterday. Great pitching for Mason Mooreand they'll host Murray State tomorrow night.
So Clark's pump and Shot BB andRadio. Coming up next, we're visiting
(15:45):
with coach cal and one more segmenthere and then we'll get to some of
your questions. Congrats to a guythat worked for you, Preston spratlet He
he's got more head back in abig dance Wow. And then Darren Horn
and n Ku and Darren sun Walker'son your team, even Darren. They're
in the semi finals of the HorizonLeague tonight. Did you see how they
got there? All right? Iwant you all to hear this because you
(16:07):
know you got people someone never playedand never coached, and they'll say you
gotta do this every time in thesesituations. Listen to this situation. They
were down seventeen, first of all, so they battle back. They're down
three, They've got the ball, all right, what the other team does?
They file and Northern makes one, misses the second rebounds it scores,
go to overtime one and they winthe game. I don't know how many
(16:30):
seconds were when they get found. It depends if you win or lose.
You did the right thing, andit may be like the last game.
If you wonder why I called atimeout, and I don't need to explain
myself. Between Rob's two free throws, Yeah, Rob misses a free throw,
so you say, why did youcall a timeout and freeze him?
(16:52):
First of all, I knew Robwould make the free throw if he settled
down. Second of all, therewasn't sixteen seconds or thirteen seconds. There
was five point nine seconds. SoI told if he misses this free throw,
you're gonna file one of those bigguys, just because of the time
(17:14):
it was left. There's five pointsix seconds, there's gonna be four point
some seconds left. They rebounded, you file a big Now he may miss
the first and now all you gottado is rebound the second ball. But
Rob looked at me and said,Coach, I'm making this shot. I
said, I know, I know. I was just telling those guys for
their sake, and he made it. And that was the ballgame. A
(17:37):
heck of a game up there. You know, they they beat us to
fifty to fifty balls here, theybeat us to offensive rebounds. They had
like nineteen, they had five inthe first four or five minutes. They
made shots, they did stuff, and we didn't play as together as we're
(18:00):
now playing. And again, folks, we've got the youngest team in the
country and they just keep getting better. They enjoy each other, they're fun
to be around, it's fun tocoach them, and they got a competitive
spirit. Five star players are usedto being chased. These guys are used
(18:21):
to being chased and they're not phasedby it. The thing that I noticed
from watching your shoot rounds all seasonin the last few weeks shorter, shorter,
plus the things you talk about,I see more of them executed in
the game. You know, you'rein there in practices the day before,
so you know what the game planis and what we're trying to do.
And young kids have game slippage, and as they get more disciplined in these
(18:48):
workouts and then the walkthroughs, theydon't make as many errors just based on
game slippage. So they've been they'vebeen better and better. Shooting rounds have
been good. And this was aboutbeing physical because you have to be against
that older Tennessee team and Ugana inparticular out he set the tone early.
Uhana we had nine blocks and hegot shorted a couple. I think what's
(19:15):
that. I think he got shorted, I would say, and you know,
uh did the stuff that we dofor each other. There were not
a whole lot of created or individualshots. Everything was created by one of
us. And uh it was.It was just a great game to go
(19:37):
on the road. You know, the whole country was picking us to win
and to go in there and thendo what we did and how we played
with confidence and courage and and notbe phased by anything. And it's a
team that maybe a one seed thathad a player go for forty, they
are going to be a one seed. They're one seed. Mike, I
(20:03):
just don't understand how you could beatthe NET four, the NET five,
or six, the NET seven, the next eight and then you're nineteen and
three. You're winning these road games, and so I don't understand it.
All I know is I don't knowhow you could have someone you beat on
(20:23):
the road late in the season threelines above you. But they can do
that. But what do I alwayssay, You're not screwing us, You're
screwing the people who are gonna play. Yeah, they're gonna look and say,
why would we have to play themthis early? So your team's the
only team in the nation to defeatfour top ten net teams and you are
(20:47):
apter number nine in the polls thisweek, both poles. Hey great,
hello, all right, let's getto a break. We'll get back get

(23:34):
for Coach cal from Randy listening inOhio. Randy, what's your question for
Coach cal Well? First off, like say, congratulations on a big win
Saturday, Coach, that was awesome. And I know you probably like the
extra day EREP, but how muchdoes it factory into seating? Do you
think in your opinion with the Sundaygame starting at one, would it be
(24:00):
a little bit better for you guysif you played a Saturday night game and
you win that game, they're helpingseating or what your thoughts and I'll hang
up the list. Yeah. Yeah, all that you said is what I've
been saying since we've been in onthese Sunday games. There's two reasons.
One, Tom will tell you itmakes no bearing, no bearing on your
(24:21):
seat. Your seat is before thatgame, So now you're playing a game.
It's you know, it's nothing.The second reason I don't like Sunday.
They may put you on a Thursdaygame. So now you get back
and it's Monday, and you're stillyou played three tournament games in a row,
(24:41):
and now you've got Monday Tuesday, and there you go, you're Tuesday.
Yeah, you're done. And soI just wish I think it's us
in a big ten. Are theonly Sunday games anymore? Yes, And
I wish they changed it, Butyou know, it is what it is.
And you know we're using everything wedo is based on seating, and
(25:03):
this tournament, that's what we'll usethe tournament for seeding. But this league
this year, I mean, we'reprobably gonna play one of two teams.
One beat us and the other playedus pretty good, and that's your first
game, you know. I mean, it's the team that did really well
(25:26):
all year, ended up finishing five, and they got to play a hard
game and then they gotta play Auburnif they win that other hard game.
I mean, it's just gonna bea bear to get by, and there's
no indicator. I mean, ifit is, we've been to the final
four. We won the national titleby losing the championship game. Then let's
(25:48):
lose the championship game. How aboutthat. Let me tell you what happened
in that game too. That game, we were up late and I can't
remember they made two to three.Something happened up in four, yes,
no, no, twelve twelve.I think it was Vandy. But that's
the game. Michael kid Gilchrist cameinto the locker room and grabbed me,
(26:11):
probably forty minutes before the game, maybe fifty, said start Darius in my
place. And I said, whywould you say that to me? Because
coach, he was the MVP oflast year's tournament, which you won.
He hasn't made a basket yet,and we're going to need him to win
(26:33):
the national title. What Michael wasseventeen years old. I start Darius.
Michael is not used to coming offthe bench, gott in foul trouble,
walk right in the game and startfiling. Darius played good. I think
he took fifteen sixteen shots, probablymade five or six. But you know
(26:57):
it was the thought that this guy, Michael kick Gilchrist believed in you so
much Darius that he says you shouldbe starting the rest of the NCAA tournament.
Darius was off the chart, MassKansas oh Man off the charts,
And I think it comes back tothe team we had that cared about one
(27:22):
another. That was the time thatAnthony Davis couldn't make a shot, walks
in at halftime and tells his team, I don't know what's going on.
I can't make a shot, solet me defend rebounding block shots. You
guys go score and we have twentytwo from Deron Lamb. Anthony Davis goes
(27:44):
one for ten and wins the MVP. Yeah, because he did everything else
that he said he was going todo. So you know, this stuff
happens, and folks don't let anybodythey have to do this, or they
have to do that, or no, this is basketball. These are one
game shots we go in this tournament. Let's keep enjoying this team and stay
(28:08):
in the moment and then we'll worrywhat happens next. But you can't put
that on these kids that way. They got to do this. They got
to do that or you know,it's just for me. I'm just all
I want them to do is thinkabout each other. You're playing for each
other, you're playing for our fans, you're playing for the program. Let's
just go have a ball and showwhat we are. And Michael was in
(28:32):
Frankfurt thing was last week testifying beforecommittee. They not know this, but
you know, stuttering isn't insured,Like you can't take your child to have
anything done. Stuttering is not aninsured They don't call it an illness.
(28:56):
But come on now, think aboutif you had a child that stuttered and
our president, President Biden had toovercome that. But he's trying to get
it so that it is insured. And I'm like, when I found out,
would anybody in here think that's thatbeing able to get treatment and other
(29:18):
things for stuttering would not be covered. I mean, you would not even
think about it, like why wouldn'tthey cover that? But it's not,
so Michael's taking up that charge, which I'm really I'm really proud of.
How cool. I mean, hehad his issue here where he didn't talk
a lot to the media when hegot when he came here, and then
he's testifying in front of the Houseand Senates and he is he was a
stutter? Did he stuttered? Andand you know he's worked so hard to
(29:45):
be over to overcome it. Butthe mental part of that, it's also
there. That's being self conscious.Think of that for him and then to
do what he did and be draftednumber two and have the kind of career
he had. Sketch a break. We're halfway home. It's the UK Healthcare

coverage of Kentucky and either Texas Aand m or Ole miss It'll be Friday
at five thirty Eastern Time from Nashville. A question from x or Twitter at
UK Sports Network. It's from BigBlue CARDI can you ask Cal about his
thoughts on the Shepherd, Dillingham,Reeves, Edwards and Big Z lineup.
(33:43):
I like the lineup. I'll tellyou who's made us different as Justin and
if he can play four, he'ssix's eight. That means we have
four guards on the court. ButZ was not physical last game, didn't
have the presence that he's had defensively, and Ugo was off the charts rebounding,
(34:08):
blocking shots, being physical, howabout this and did not take one
shot. But without Ugo we don'twin the game. And so yeah,
I like that group, and Ilike DJ at times. With that group
and one of those guards out withDJ out there, it's the same thing,
you know, but you get somethingdifferent. And we've done this now
(34:30):
without Trey and you could tell he'sa little behind. And when you don't
play as long as he played theaction, the speed of the game,
the toughness of the game. Youweren't doing any of that for weeks,
so it's taken him time. Buthe worked out yesterday, he worked out
today, He'll have a couple tomorrow, and you know, let's see where
(34:54):
he goes. And you got adude who physically, you know, he
gives us another shot blocker. He'sphysical, he can get to the rim,
he's strong, so he gives usa different kind of look. And
you know, that's a very potentoffensive lineup that the listener asked about.
You could put a really potent, more potent defensive group out there with.
(35:15):
Yeah, but I don't think itmatters who I put on the court offensively,
they'll be good. It matters howare we guarding against Tennessee. We
did a pretty good job, now, you know. They they went to
their one guy and he was hewas banging threes and he got it going.
(35:38):
But I think again, it tookaway a little bit from some of
the other guys who absolutely killed uslast game. You guys, the thing
we talked about in the pregame aboutkeeping Ziggler off those elbows, that looked
like they did a good job. They did, and they did a pretty
good job, and d was abig part of it. Yeah, and
DJ did great. I mean, you know what I said to the team
(36:00):
today about DJ, the way guardsand how hard he plays, and there's
no pressure on his offense, solet it go. If you have shots,
take him. If not, goWhen he gets to the rim and
he reverses it under the goal andthey can't block it, he makes all
of them or shoot it higher sothey don't. But I'm not He's like
(36:21):
the least of my worries. Youknow, you're not gonna make every shot,
but no one is. I mean, and if someone's shooting it and
knocking down it, you play himmore. And then the guys accept it
because they liked each other, Theycheer each other, they celebrate each other.
And had a good story on thatfor you. And Jordan Cornett on
my radio show this morning, whodid the podcast with you a few years
back. He was working national radiofor this game. His wife Shay was
(36:44):
seated right behind your bench, andJordan was telling me that one of her
observations was about Rob and how hegot into that early foul trouble and it
had you know, wasn't his dayfrom that standpoint of you know, getting
on the court as much as hewanted. But she was taken by how
active he wasn't cheering for his teammates, and she was very impressed by he
has come so far. He isall the way the way they're evaluating him
(37:08):
right now. And do you understandknow why over my history and we win
a lot of games that you gettwo fouls in the first half unless the
game's out of hand, I'm notplaying you because if you get a third
and then I put you in thesecond half, what are you thinking about.
(37:29):
It's not foiling. Not filing. Now you can't play. So you
got two fouls, And if youdon't want to come out, don't foul,
don't go underneath the guy, don'tgrab, don't take a chance,
don't stick your arm in there, don't foul. You still defend, but
(37:50):
you're not trying to steal, doanything crazy. If you do and you
get a second foul, I'm takingyou out. Unless the game is getting
away from us, then I maystick him in for two minutes, three
minutes. Boom, you're out.Boom. Didn't file because you got to
be able to play free and loose, and your minds can't be worrying about
filing. Let's get to a callon the Clark's Pumping Shop phone line from
(38:14):
Keith in Western Kentucky. Go ahead, Keith, Hello, thanks for taking
my call. Sure what you gotKeith? Yes, sir, Hey,

I appreciate that. And you're right, it is a recipe of us.
We've got to help each other andmake each other look good. And
you know, over a season asa coach, that's your whole goal.
And then you're trying to empower themso they know it's their team. I
(39:17):
love when reeb Reid or Robert orDJ come up to me and say,
hey, let's try this, andI always let's go because they'll make it
work. So it's uh, youknow, it's a good thing with these
these kids. And you know, just as we go forward, let's leave
(39:38):
these kids, leave them alone, let them loose, don't be they got
to do this, You got todo that. They stop. Just enjoy
these games. Uh, well, head to a break here with one other
note that we mentioned the congrats toMorehead, good luck to n KU with

to the Clark's Pump and Shop phoneline to Washington, DC where Matthew is
listening. What do you have forcoach cal Matthew? Yeah, Hi,
(43:22):
coach, appreciate you taking my call. My question is oriented around mental health
specifically, it would love to heartwo things. Has your access to mental
health resources for your players, beit a sports and collegist or therapist changed
from your time from UMass to Memphisto UK and then secondly, if you
(43:45):
have time, I have your playerstended to be open and receptive to talking
to those folks or as it reallyvaried player by player. Well, first
of all, Bob Rotella and I'vebeen friends since my UMass days and my
Memphis days and my coaching in theNBA with the nets and then being here.
(44:07):
So but we have Jonathan Roach who'salso working with some of the kids,
who's you know, the kids understoodafter the start of the year how
hard this is and if you're notyour biggest cheerleader, you're not making it.
(44:29):
And if you can't withstand some stuffhappening around you and understand the battle
you have every day is with yourself. You own your response to stuff and
talking to them as nineteen year olds. Now let me say this. I
could just tell you, in allhonesty, if there were cameras on every
(44:52):
corner when I was in college,me and my buddies would have probably been
arrested. Just telling you. Theother thing is if you wanted to reach
us by phone, you rang thephone. There was no call way.
It just kept ringing, ringing andringing. You never heard from somebody from
Australia. I mean, with directmessaging and all this stuff, you can
(45:16):
get in touch with these kids, whether they know you or not. You're
ready. There weren't list there weren'tsocial media. People who have one job
clicks, So say the most nastything you can say, true or not,
just say it so you get clicks. These kids are eighteen nineteen years
(45:37):
old having to deal with that.I totally respect them. What's happened in
the NBA with all this money thatthese guys are making, it even puts
more on them. Every basket becomesa draft position you're not making it.
I mean, I'm really one ofthose things I've always done with my teams
(45:59):
is have sports collegists some of it. You know, I want to meet
with them myself, like I wantto talk like, look, here's how
I'm feeling about this, so youknow, I try to make it so
they're not you know, we wewe had Ryan Holliday come in and talk
to the team again, talk abouthow you approach things. So yes,
(46:22):
it's a big part of what wedo. And the reason is they leave
me. They're on their own.Now. When you go to the NBA,
there's an exchange. They pay youto perform you don't perform, you're
out and someone else will. Andso they've got to learn how what's your
(46:43):
inner voice? What are you sayingto yourself? What do you say when
things don't go right? Are youblaming everybody? Do you want to be
around people that enabled you to pushit off? It's not you, it's
always somebody else. You got totake evaluation of what you're doing and be
honest with yourself and then change itif you don't like it. And Justin's
(47:05):
talk about going through a lot ofthat is he did first season and look
where he is now and again hehas a smile on his face. I
mean, this was hard. Ifelt so bad for him, and I
know there were people out there youshouldn't play him, and don't you know?
Just ye he you know, AndI kept saying, I believe in
you, man, just keep working. He spent time in the gym,
(47:27):
he was in there all the time. I knew he'd break through at some
point. But you know the greatestthing I said, Justin, I believe
in you. He said, coach. I believe in you. In other
words, you keep coaching me,and I believe in you. That's that's
what's you know when he said that, I'm like this guy, he's one
of the great kids I've coached. He had a couple at least through two,
(47:50):
maybe three tough rebounds in a crowd. Oh he jumped the ball now,
yeah, you know he get likeI said, if he could play
four and he can against some teams, he makes us like we're playing with
four guards. Question from Greg atUK Sports Network. Can you get Aaron
and Z to put their hands upwhen an opposing player shoots the ball near
(48:10):
them? Greg says most of thetime their hands are down. That negates
their length. Do you see that? Well, I think Aaron at times,
what's happened with Z? When theguy drives in, you got to
leave your feet. If you don'tleave your feet, they're gonna call it
a block. So the new rule, the way it is that if you
(48:34):
jump and there's body contact, youknow how the guy throws his shoulder and
arms into you and tries to shootit. As long as you jump and
your hands are up, you're good. But Aaron has had his hands down
and then goes, you know, throws them back, but it's too late.
You already are down. Or theydon't jump. But I'll tell you
(48:54):
the truth. We had nine blockslast game. Nine blocks. We may
leave the nation in block shots lastgame. I thought Z stayed under the
basket too long. But again,we're going to do some work on that
tomorrow. And I told him.He and I talked today and I said,
look, I'm gonna help you.I'm gonna lead you on this,
(49:15):
but you're gonna have to be ableto go do it. You leave the
sec in blocks at six a game, third nationally. But you wonder what
that might look like if you hadhad all three of those guys from the
beginning. Yeah, we didn't.We didn't. How many games were they
out? Ten? Nine or ten? Well? Was she was out sixteen?
Yeah? Aaron was December second, that was probably about ten, and
(49:37):
then Ugo was a two weeks afterthat. I got to get to a
break. One segment left. It'sthe UK Healthcare John Calipari Show on the

Kentucky and either A and M orOld Miss on Friday night, and so
you won't prepare for that. Youknow what I don't do. I'm not
watching any tape right now. Uhmy guys put ALBA h A and M
played Old Miss the last game ofthe year, so it's on my iPad,
but I promise I will not watchit. Yeah, you know how
(55:37):
many games I've watched all year,so I'm not gonna watch one I don't
need to watch. Then you preparefor a team and they lose, you
just wasted all that time. I'drather take my dog for a walk.
Everybody sees me walking Palmer with thethe I bring a carriage with me in

case he needs to go in there. But I'd rather do that than watch
a team we may not play. But as you said, whoever you get
in this league hard, there's notI mean, you think about it.
Think of the game that Arkansas playedagainst US. They won their next game,
and they had Alabama beat at Alabama. That's their last three games.
(56:22):
So now you want to play them. Wait a minute. Their guard play
was so good against US it's crazy. And Vandy beat Arkansas and Florida and
gave you guys, and after theyplayed US and played well, they beat
Florida. This well tough Lea,I mean, so you know I was
happy for Brad. You and Iwere in the hallway when I said Vanderbilt
