Day Baker Cameron Mills to Jack Burford Chevrolet count down
to tip off show he gets going at twelve thirty
Eastern time Tomorrow at Rupp for Brown at uk As
we welcome in coach Mark Pope to the show. Nice
Christmas you're the family, the guys.

Speaker 9 (06:13):
Yeah, it's great. It was a great Christmas. It was,
it was. It's been great, you know, to to have
a little bit of time where we can just kind
of we had a few practices practice days where we
could just focus on us, which was super important to us.
And then we spent the last couple try to prep
for Brown. And then I just got to I just
came straight here from visiting with the great vern Oh wow,

(06:37):
which was so cool for me. I can't even tell
you how old is Vernon? Now, well, he was fifty eight,
so he was. He's fifty eight chanp for thirty in
the National Championship, yep, and he and he and he
gave it to the great Elgin Baylor, which was saying
something in Seattle and then Wash, you know, top ten
picking the NBA Draft and just all time iconic legend.

(07:02):
Uh here at Kentucky and he's he's sharpest could be.
I mean, I don't think I had to spend you know,
twenty minutes or so with him, but uh, you know,
we got through about fifteen stories in that time, and
it's just like, man, what we like. I wish we
should have brought him here on the radio show because
I was dying. Uh, it just was just a gift
to So you just add that to the you know,

(07:24):
one hundred special things we got to do over this
Christmas break is pretty special.

Speaker 3 (07:27):
Some of this for you, now that you're back here
all the time in this job is a little bit
like a fan to have a chance to visit with.

Speaker 9 (07:36):
Guy like one hundred per I mean, you know, he's
a legend. Like these are the guys that like built
Kentucky from just Kentucky was just another place and then
these guys came and built it into this incredible mecha
of basketball that it is. And so it's it's really
fun here these stories. Man, it's it was actually super cool.
He told a couple that I could probably could repeat

(07:56):
and a couple that I can't repeat, but just to
you know, just to hear about his experiences. And I
got to meet Johnny Cox, uh, you know, a couple
of months ago, and it's just just really special guys. Man.

Speaker 3 (08:08):
Well, how have your guys gotten better with the extra
practice just focused on yourself?

Speaker 9 (08:13):
Yeah, So they've been really you know, we've kind of
dialed in on several really huge points of affici is
obviously coming off to Ohio State debacle. Ball screen defense
was a massive priority and it's going to continue to be.
It'll be a work in progress every day from now
to the rest of the season. But what I've been
proud of is our guys have really you know that
they these were not wasted days. They came in and

(08:33):
every day and we're really focused on on trying to grow,
and so we made some huge growth in that space.
We made some uh some some huge growth in in
some some offensive scheme stuff that we're trying to work on,
you know, as well as is kind of continuing to
build on fundamentals things that we're doing, and we had
terrific days of work, and so those things will, you know,

(08:55):
they'll they'll there'll be big parts in our growth as
we can continue down the road.

Speaker 3 (09:01):
I know it's great for the guys to get to
go be with the families, but I'm sure there's a
part of them they can't wait to get back on
the court tomorrow.

Speaker 9 (09:09):
I think we're really excited to get back on the court.
I do. I think I think the guys are really
eager to get back on the court and get better.

Speaker 3 (09:19):
Brown comes in with a record of seven and four.
I think Yale, which won that league last year, beat
Brown by one in the league tournament. So what daase
do you know about them? Yeah, this Brown team is
really good. They're really good. You know, they'd be an
undefeated Rhode Island team. They're really good.

Speaker 9 (09:40):
They have an incredibly explosive combo guard that is lovingly
referred to as IVY League Iverson. He's terrific. He's dangerous, dangerous,
dangerous shoots at anytime, anywhere, all the time. It's really
herky Jerkinkin shooting forty four from three off the bout

(10:00):
is shooting seventeen shots a game, is incredibly aggressive, really
really special talent. They have some you know, they're you know,
you don't see this in the IVY League all the time,
but this this team is number eleven as of a
week ago, they were number eleven in block shots in
the country. They have elite level rim protection, really really

(10:21):
great athleticism. You know, they're they're a team that plays
with tremendous pace. They really shoot the ball. They're they're
a really really good team. It's gonna be a great
challenge for us coming off the break.

Speaker 3 (10:32):
I think they're best shot blocker, you know, like six seven.

Speaker 9 (10:36):
Yeah, they're undersized, but they're my goodness, they get it done.
I mean, this is really I'm not sure where Duke is.
Duke might be ranked tired, but this is certainly one
or two the best rim protection team we faced so far.

For the UK Healthcare Mark Pope Show, you can put
them on the Facebook page as well. For Kentucky men's basketball,
and you can give us a call on the Clark's

(14:35):
Pumping Shop phone line. So let's jump right into our
first question. It comes from Brandon. Free throws can be
so crucial down the stretch of games. How many do
your guys shoot in practice every day?

Speaker 9 (14:48):
Is Brandon Garrison? Brandon, appreciate you pre sage you sending
into the question, my friend, so our guys, so we
do We do shooting segments with our guys. We do
individual instruction and it varies by player, but some of
the guys are getting hundreds up on a regular basis,
some guys are getting less, just kind of depending on
the needs.

Speaker 3 (15:07):
Thank you for the question, Brandon. You can send those
into at UK Sports Network. We've got our alumni Hall Fan.
Question of the Week comes from Scoots forty seven to
at UK Sports Network, who was the one guy in
the SEC when you were in college that you knew
was going to give you the toughest time and you
had to bring your a game.

Speaker 9 (15:26):
Wow, that's a great question. Man. We had really good
players in this league, but you know, we had great
We had epic battles with Arkansas. Arkansas won the championship
in ninety four, they came back and lost to usally
in ninety five. We had an epic SEC championship game

(15:49):
against Arkansas in ninety five. We were down seventeen during
the game and then we're down eight in overtime and
came back to win. But this Corlus was a monster.
He was he was a problem. I mean, he was
a He was a really really unique player in a
system that was really really unique in the way that
they played. And he was you just knew that he

(16:11):
was gonna he was gonna be a physical beast every
single night. He was pretty special. But there were there
were so many great players in the league. I mean,
if you think about it that my senior Mississippi State
was in the final four with US. They actually beat
us in the SEC championship game, and Big Eric Dampierre,
who went on to have a terrific, terrific tenure in
the league, and Dante Jones. Those guys, those are two
guys that were a real problem. But the entire league

(16:33):
was really good, much like it is now.

Speaker 3 (16:35):
Yeah, it is just looking the other day in the league.
This was a two or three days ago, so a
couple of these records would have changed. But fifteen of
the sixteen teams were ten and two or better.

Speaker 9 (16:45):
Yeah, it's a remarkable And I think you know we
were talking about Oklahoma earlier. Yeah, Oklahoma was picked to
finish what second or third to last in the league,
and they're ranked number ten or eleven or twelve right now.
It just as and they're undefeated right now and if
one huge games went and you know, one MTE and
so this league is awesome, Like it's just as it's unbelievable.

(17:06):
And so it's another reason why this this break has
been nice, even though the guys have got a ton
of work in just to kind of just kind of
take a last breath, last breath before we jump in
this gallet, because that's what it's gonna be. It's gonna
be an emotional roller coaster it's gonna at tax us
in every possible way. It's gonna expose us in every
possible way and give us every chance in the world

(17:27):
to get better and prepare ourselves for for you know,
hopefully what we were hoping it will be a great
postseason run.

Speaker 3 (17:34):
Big East put three in the Final four in rap
Arena in eighty five, so maybe it could happen for
the league this year to do something like that. Thank
you Scoots for the question. You get a twenty five
dollars gift card from Alumni Hall. It's at Alumni Hall
on X. He also asked, who was that guy on
your team that was maybe I guess he's meeting gave

(17:54):
you the toughest time in practice, assuming.

Speaker 9 (17:58):
Well it was a war you know, we we were
like if you remember that team, I mean, you know,
people said that our second unit might have been a
final four team. I actually love to talk about that
because I was part of the second but my goodness,
it was just you know, I mean, listen, uh, there

(18:20):
is no doubt the guy that gave me the toughest
time in practice, that's not even close, was a great
young coach by the name of Rick Patino. He gave
all of us the toughest time in practice. It was
tough playing against each other, but it was it was tougher.
You know, there's no bigger challenge than coach.

Speaker 3 (18:37):
Let me go to a question here from Cotton who
says the last four or five games, he thinks that
you're not running the all the way through the offense
like you did in the first six or seven games.
He says, every place seems to start on the left
side with a handoff. Is he right or are you
seeing that a little bit?

Speaker 9 (18:56):
You know, we've had some different lineups, you know, since
Kurz been out. It's it's it's it's altered our rotation
a little bit, and it's it's put us in some
growing spaces where there's not a quick fix. It's affected
us in a number of ways in terms of continuity.
We also have played some pretty good teams and and

(19:16):
so it's a combination of a lot of things. But
in general, that's a space where we're really excited to
get better and the guys are working hard at getting better.
We actually have a huge upside there. Kirk, he's doing great.
He's you know, he was in rehab today. I actually
walked in after practice. He was working hard in rehab
uh and so I hit Brandon Wells pretty hard about

(19:38):
this Saturday, just seeing if I could get him to
uh to divide in. It was a hard no. So,
so you know, I don't know when or if he's
coming back, but apparently he's definitely not coming back by Saturday.

Speaker 3 (19:53):

Ever, wonder where the capital A and Chick fil A
came from. It started with Grade A top quality chicken,
but we believed everything, not just the food, should be
Grade A.

Speaker 21 (21:26):
Hi, I'm Jira, I am a team leader at chick

Every day, real team member paid for their testimonial. Hey
there's a penny by your foot.

A penny, find a penny, pick it up.

Speaker 9 (21:48):
Then all day you'll have good. Look.

Speaker 13 (21:49):
Come on, let's aim higher for the nickel. But how
often do you find free nickels every day at Thornton's.
Say five cents offer gallon of fuel every day with
Thornton's Refreshing Rewards.

Speaker 22 (21:58):
Then we need a new adage to Thornton's.

Speaker 23 (22:00):
Pump your gas save some nickels with every pass, dell
add up to save a buck.

Speaker 13 (22:04):
How does that sound for a little luck that is
way better than Penny's.

Speaker 24 (22:07):
Get five cents.

Speaker 11 (22:08):
Off for gallon of fuel every day at your local Thornton's.
Valid on fuel purchases up to thirty five gallons requires
download of the Refreshing Rewards app and successful registration.

Speaker 24 (22:17):

Speaker 3 (22:32):

Speaker 9 (22:57):
Great is Kenny Brooks right now?

Speaker 21 (22:58):
What?

Speaker 9 (22:58):
Oh my god, that's so incredible. What a tremendous job
those guys are doing. It's it's super cool.

Speaker 3 (23:04):
And their league is like it is on the inside. Yeah,
let's go right to the Clark's Pupping Shop phone line.
We'll start in Owensboro.

Speaker 25 (23:12):
Corey, go ahead, Hey, Hey, thanks for taking my call.

Speaker 9 (23:17):
Guys.

Speaker 25 (23:18):
Hey, how are you guys doing?

Speaker 3 (23:20):
Doing great?

Speaker 9 (23:20):
Corey? How are you not bad?

Speaker 26 (23:24):
Hey?

Speaker 25 (23:24):
Mark, coach Pope. I really glad to see you here
back at Kentucky. I was a homegrown Kentucky kid growing up,
so I remember you back in the day. I'm playing
in the district title game, and after my title game,
you are playing in the Final four. And I'm listening

(23:47):
to the singer after the game, after my district title game,
just watching the UK real quick. I got two questions
and I'll get off.

Speaker 26 (23:57):
Do you see.

Speaker 25 (23:59):
Brandon Garrett getting more playing time with the quicker teams?
And my second question is how is the recruiting class
coming in for next year? Thank you for taking my call.

Speaker 9 (24:10):
Corey, great questions, Thanks so much. Brandon Garrison is incredibly talented.
He's growing really fast. He's he is, uh, he is
he is. His ceiling is so high, and so it's
been fun for him to kind of learn us and
learn how we're playing and learn how he fits into
all this. And yes, I do see his potential for
more and more time. A couple of things he is.

(24:34):
Monitoring his files and monitoring his health are two things
that are really really important. He's not one hundred percent
healthy right now, nothing serious, but just he's dealing with
a few things we're trying to monitor, trying to keep
as healthy as he can. And then and then you know,
he's he's just monitoring his files on the court are

(24:55):
really important. But it's been really fun to watch him
grow and he has a he has the chance to
grow into a really really special basketball player. We're super
excited about him, and he's he's gonna be massively important. Uh,
just like everybody we have on this rosters we as
we run through this league. Thank you, Corey. And he's
asked about the recruits for mixture. Oh yep. So we're

(25:15):
really excited about this class. We have three incredibly talented
and incredibly highly motivated, great young men who are in
the recruiting class right now. We we're there's there's a
good chance that we're not quite done with the freshman

(25:36):
part of this class. And then of course there will
be some some portal part of this class too, But
so far as as a beginning man, we couldn't be
it couldn't be any better than it is right now.
We're we're absolutely thrilled with the with the with the
three guys we have in this class, really special uh
you know, like I said, really special talents on the
court and great young man off and that bodes well

(25:57):
for for what they'll be able to do the day
they walk in the door and how fast they're going
to grow, and so is uh, we're ecstatic about that group.

Speaker 3 (26:07):
We'll go to the other end of the state now
to Wolf County. Uh, Dewey, you're up on the Clark's
popping shot phone line with coach Pope.

Speaker 27 (26:16):
Hey, ouch, help you can understand me. I have a
drag and I'm bating thout cancer. But no, it ain't
really a question. I have done a power on Facebook
about the UK cat logo. Nobody likes the new logo
we've hide for the last several years. Everybody will to

(26:36):
throw back to the old wild guy with the ta
the pony deers, Tony Dan. You know you got Kansas
Tate Rosings Tight some other college taints that's got the
same logo. And you can't really tell it to a cat,
you know, a wild cat. It ain't a Kentucky wild
cat were used to have. And I was like, say,

(26:59):
how getting.

Speaker 9 (27:04):
You Dewey? First of all, I hope, I hope your
return to health is going well.

Speaker 26 (27:09):
Uh.

Speaker 9 (27:09):
This cancer is just the worst. And you sound great
though I could understand you really well. Thank you so
much for calling with a question. I'm here with the
whole U corporate, all the corporate officers from Chick fil
A who are sponsored for the show tonight, and there
was nobody more excited about hearing that question. I saw

(27:30):
more interaction when you started discussing the future of the
logo among I mean and and listen, Chick fil A
is branding genius, okay, and uh. It was really fun
to watch the reactions in here. It seemed like you
might have some some people in the higher up corporate
officer of Chick fil A that share some of your feelings.

(27:52):
So is that a good political way for me not
to respond to you? But but it was fun to
watch people's reactions. I appreciate you bringing up the question.
I'll tell you this. I mean, I have a very
personal affinity for the logo that was the logo when
I was here. I think it's it's special and distinctive
and wonderful and great times and and I love what

(28:13):
we're rolling with now, and so I'm gonna let the
people that pay write my checks make those decisions.

Speaker 3 (28:20):
I think all that stuff has gotten so big, all
the branding and the licensing things and logos and et cetera.
I remember when I was a kid, it was such
a big deal to come to Kennedy Bookstore, which was
over on campus at that time, and to get like
a notebook that had a uk lew or you know,
whatever it might be.

Speaker 9 (28:39):
Yeah.

Speaker 3 (28:40):
Also, this is a funny story. Yeah, your senior year,
the denim uniforms the game, I think it was the
Arkansas game. You guys debuted those, and Dick Gabriel and
I were doing the post game calling show. I mean,
you guys were winning. Every game seemed like about thirty
and we did a solid one hour show like this.
Every single hall was about the uniforms.

Speaker 9 (29:02):
Now, so things, I think we all have an affinity
for the denam Now, how were they received them?

Speaker 3 (29:09):
People want to see them there?

Speaker 9 (29:11):
Yeah, yeah, it's funny. Well, you know, it's interesting. So
here's the deal. And I really believe this, like, and
I'm not going to say this well because I haven't
formulated this idea completely on our mind, but all those
great players and great coaches and great teams that were
representing that logo that we all love, now, that's why
we love it. That's why we love it. And like,

(29:32):
we have an affinity for those denim uniforms now because
Tony Delk, you know, set it INCAA record for made
threes in a national championship game wearing those uniforms, right,
and we all got to share in that and so
so so that's our job right now. Our job is
to write the next chapter in this incredibly brilliant story

(29:54):
so that someday, you know, thirty years from now, we
have people calling in saying, oh man, that Wildcat logo
that we have right now. I love it. I grew
up on it. It was the greatest thing. And that's
something we earned. That's what that's that's what the people
that came before us did. They earned our love and
affinity for all of those those things that we connect

(30:14):
with that, you know, we get to kind of be
a galvanizing force in our memories of those great times.

We're taking your questions. Let's go back to a call
on the Clark's Pumping Shop phone line. Matt, You're next up?

Speaker 9 (34:11):
What do you have?

Speaker 26 (34:14):
Hey, coach?

Speaker 9 (34:15):
However he's not Matt doing great? Brother, how are you?

Speaker 2 (34:20):
I'm doing great?

Speaker 10 (34:20):
Man.

Speaker 2 (34:21):
I've been a true Blue fan for since nineteen eighty four, man,
and you know I was raised watching the Skywalkers and
all the great ones, you know, and but to see
what you did there for Trenton Noah in the Happy
Birthday thing, Man, I want to see the Cats win

(34:43):
every game, but as a person, as a human being, man,
I got to thank you for doing that. The smiles
on those kids' faces with Autisam and all those things
that you did there. Man, you're a gift to the
University of Kentucky. Man, you really are.

Speaker 3 (35:04):
Thank you, Matt.

Speaker 9 (35:05):
Matt, that's super kind. We uh, you know, it's it's
it's interesting because one of the one of the great
gifts that we get to receive is is people are
sot to associated with Kentucky Basketball, is we get to
we get to learn from people in all different ways.
We have, uh, you know, just the hardest working people
in the world come through our gyms and get to
meet them. And we have CEOs and and and and

(35:28):
brilliant innovators that we get to meet. And then we
get to meet kids like we did the other day
that have so much to teach us. And and it's
it's one of the blessings of putting on this jerseys.
You get to you get to learn from everybody. And
that was certainly the case the other day. And uh,
you know, we we didn't sound great as a group.
You know, we're gonna work on how well we sound,

(35:50):
but there was a lot of joy in the gym
for sure. So thanks for recalling, Mat, appreciate that.

Speaker 8 (35:54):
Uh.

Speaker 3 (35:54):
I want to get back to a question and at
UK Sports Network on on X What this is from
Wildcats ninety six to one two. What's your practice schedule
like in this time between semesters.

Speaker 9 (36:05):
Yeah, it's been brilliant. So we've got to throw in
a couple two days which have been really good for us.
I like it. You know, Coach P did. Coach P
did two a days all year, and then we do
three a day's. During the break, we do you know,
we do a short individual instruction that's pretty light on three,
give or take three or four days a week with
each of our guys individually, and then of course we

(36:27):
do our practice. But during the break we've had a
chance to squeeze in a couple extra practices, which is
really great for us. And then this week we've moved
everything up, so because we have a two o'clock game
tomorrow and then we have an eleven am game tip
on Saturday, we've moved all our practice times up, trying
to get just a accustomed to the earlier start. But

(36:48):
it's been a really, really wonderful functional week, not just
on the court, but also in terms of kind of
building our repertoire and our guys getting more exposure to
film and evaluate things that are we'll see some pay
off those immediately, but we're going to see the bulk
of the payoff as we get through the season.

Speaker 3 (37:06):
Let's get back to the Clark's Papa Shop phone line
to Owensboro again. Jared, you're on with coach Pope.

Speaker 29 (37:13):
Hi, my name is Tennyson. I was wondering because tomorrow
is my first Kentucky basketball game, and I'm excited to
see you, Reperena. But I was wondering who was your
hardest player to guard at Kentucky when you played Mark Pope?

Speaker 9 (37:29):
Okay, Tennyson, how old are you? I'm ten years old, Tennison.
Is this your first game ever? In Reperena? Yes, Oh,
you're about to lose your mind, like you're about to
walk into the greatest gym in all of college basketball, tennis,
And I'm so excited for you. Who are you coming
to the game with.

Speaker 29 (37:50):
My dad?

Speaker 2 (37:51):
Oh?

Speaker 9 (37:52):
Come on, like that's great? And are you a ballplayer?

Speaker 27 (37:56):
Yes?

Speaker 29 (37:57):
I played basketball for like four.

Speaker 9 (37:59):
Years tennis and that is so awesome. Okay, so take
your pick in terms of the hardest guys, man, I
was playing with some superstars, so playing against Antoine Walker
was a bear. What some people don't know about. He
played in the NBA for a long time, was an
NBA All Star. He was so strong, like his core
strength was unbelievable, and he for a guy his size,

(38:20):
he had this real hurky jerky nature that was that
was pretty incredible. Playing against Walter McCarty every day was
was really challenging. I always thought of myself as the
you know, one of my goals. I wasn't a great athlete,
but I could be the most the most well conditioned
athlete on the team. So I took great pride in
that we would do a mile time trial in my

(38:41):
senior year. Walter McCarty, all six ' ten of him,
actually beat me in our mile. I think he ran
a I don't know I ran a four forty one.
I think he ran a four to thirty eight, which
which you know, was upsetting to me for my whole
you know, career at college and basketball. But you know,
trying to run with Walt every day in that press

(39:02):
was really really challenging. But I could probably go through
the whole list of guys on the team, and we
had a great team. Tennison, great questions. Cannot wait to
see you in Rapparena. Tomorrow. Hope you and your dad
have a great day. So glad you guys are able
to come.

Speaker 3 (39:18):
Thank you Tennison for the call. This next question is
at UK Sports Network and will segue into it because
you mentioned the press. Robbie says, Coach, do you think
that you might full or half court press more than
you do when SEC play starts.

Speaker 9 (39:31):
Yeah, we'll kind of we'll kind of pick and choose
a little bit. You know, our rotation has been stressed
a little bit with Kerr going down, so we're, uh,
you know, I'm, I'm we're going to try and you know,
where we were kind of not spending at any time
monitoring energy or fouls, we're going to monitor those a

(39:52):
little bit more. Uh, but we're certainly going to take
our shots when we can.

Speaker 3 (39:57):
Coming up on a break and we'll take that and
come back a couple more segments. For your questions for
Coach Pope, give us a call at Clark's Pumping Shop

back to the Clark's Pumping Shop phone line. Sean and Richmond,
you're next up with coach Pope.

Speaker 9 (42:40):
Hey, Tom, Hey are you Sean? How are you doing brother?

Speaker 26 (42:44):
Yeah, I'm doing great. So I tried to call in
last week when the phone lines we're having such a
tough time, so I've saved it for this week. So
I actually had two questions. And then when you guys
have been talking about Bill Cotley, I read coach t
full Court Pressure Book in high school and there's a

(43:04):
great little exert in here, Bill Kyty. So if you
don't mind, just indulg me for two secondaries. I just
want you to picture of this in your.

Speaker 31 (43:12):
Mind, because you could tell the Lobill game was getting close.
Bill Kytley was getting that tie. We were in the
Atlanta airport this Sunday before Christmas waiting for our flight
to Cincinnati when he spawned one of their players talking
to Sean Woods. The player was just heading home to
South Carolina from the holidays, but Bill was not exactly
filled with the Christmas Spirit, Louibill's here. He said they're

(43:33):
too close with his friends, with all their guys. They
said Bell would blame everything on Louisbille if he could,
the Gulf.

Speaker 26 (43:40):
War, the recession. He's hated them for over forty years.
So I just love that about Bill Catley, that he
was freaking out because Sean Woods was talking to a
Loisill player in the Atlanta airport. But I just help
you guys would appreciate that little factory there. And then
my two questions for you are one, from one dad

(44:03):
to another, how are your girls transitioning to Lexington and
this East Coast life? And then two, I've always kind
of wondered with Amari and Brandon Garrison with your offense
at the top of the key when it's kind of
initiated there with a with a five man. Ideally, does
it work better with a Walter McCarty type or will

(44:28):
these big guys who can really shoot the finda We've
seen it from Brandon Garrison a little bit, but I
wouldn't classify him as a jump shooter just in what
I've seen. But you know just that when you recruit further,
do you target somebody who can really shoot or is
it more important to be a great passer there at
the top.

Speaker 9 (44:45):
Yeah, great question. So one first of all, that that
story about Bill Kyley is just so vented Wildcat Billy.
It just is, like, I mean, I love that man
so much. Thank you for sharing that. It just is.
It's the best, Yes, right, he just is the best
of all time, and it's real, like for him, it
was real. I guarantee you. You know, one of the

(45:07):
great things about mister Kelly was he couldn't hide any
of his motion because it showed up on his face.
His face and his neck would turn bright red right
when he was feeling some frustration about something. So I
guarantee as you are read, I'm like, oh boy, here's
mister Kylly turning bright red. You know he was. I'm
sure he was hot at Woody. I guarantee you. Woody
didn't get a new pair of socks for two months

(45:27):
after that. And so thanks for sharing that. The Pope
girls are doing amazing. Thanks for asking. We just so shay.
It was really fun because we had three of our
four girls and our son in law here for the
Christmas break and it was unbelievable to have everybody here
under the same roof. Of course, Avery is serving a

(45:49):
mission in l Salvador, so she couldn't be here, but
we get to talk to her once a day, so
we were on and off the phone with her throughout
the day, and she's doing great. And then Shaye is
having such an incredible experience at lecting and Catholic people
that have been so great to her and so far
as as much as we know, she's staying out of trouble,
which is really terrific. And and so it's been a

(46:12):
it's been a really blessing blessing for her to be
a part of that community. And and then in regards
to our five men, so uh, the answer is yes.
So mostly as an initiator, we really really value our
guys' ability to pass it. And as they learn more
and more about how we play and what we're looking
for and learn our guys, so much of it is

(46:34):
learning our guys and our guys learning it. Will continue
to see that get better and better. Super proud of
Amari for finally getting into the positive territory and assistant
turnover ratio. He had dug himself a little bit of whole,
but he's been so diligent about his decision making, and Brandon,
of course has been living in that space for a while,
so that is it. Secondly, you know, you might not

(46:57):
consider consider Brandon Garrison a jump shoot, but he definitely
considers himself to be a dangerous, dangerous jump shooter, and
he's actually gonna show that more and more and more.
So those are all important skills. But yes, ideally, ideally,
you know that adds another dimension when those guys are
really dangerous from the three point line. So all those

(47:18):
things kind of are true together.

Speaker 3 (47:19):
PG had one game early where he had just the
tip of his shoe on the three point line, so
he should have two threes.

Speaker 9 (47:26):
He actually banged a game winner and a scrimmage yesterday
from the three point line, and you know it's one
of those he tried to channel Kobe Brea. He actually
shot it from the top of the key and turned
around and started celebrating before it went in. So these
guys are man, these guys are fun to coach, and
they're sure fun to watch.

Speaker 3 (47:43):
Let's go to Garrett in Russell Springs. What do you
have for coach Pope?

Speaker 9 (47:47):
Garrett, Hey, coach, are you wonderful? Garrett?

Speaker 32 (47:55):
I had three questions. Someone took one of my questions
by full court prayers. My second question is do you
want your players shoot more threes? Take less threes, and
do more shots in the taint? And my second my
third question would be I have sent a message to
the radio station here on personal message if you and
the team could send my son a happy birthday video

(48:16):
or audio. He's a huge UK fan. We've been to
every UK home game this year and the first game
he's been to this year coming back home and taught
the girls his sisters say at the blast and now
I've got them called wanting to go now?

Speaker 9 (48:30):
Okay, wait, what is your son's name? Lake? And Withers?
Lake and Withers?

Speaker 32 (48:36):
How he will be turning eight January sixteenth, which right
now we're at basketball practice. He's in their practicing right now.
So I send my information to the Facebook messenger on
the radio station here. If you get that, that'd be awesome.

Speaker 9 (48:53):
How much trouble is Laken gonna get in if you
put them on the phone right now?

Speaker 21 (49:00):
Uh?

Speaker 32 (49:00):
Probably not at all, do it?

Speaker 9 (49:03):
We'll go, Hey, well, I answer this question, why don't
you running hand on the phone. I'll answer the other question.
And what was the other question? Oh, yes, so you
go get legging on the phone. I'm gonna talk about
threes for a minute. So, yes, I am desperate for
our guys to shoot the ball more. And and the
thing is is that when we're shooting more threes, so

(49:24):
we shoot threes that we earn. We're not belligitate about it.
We earn threes, and we earned threes by space and
pace and cutting. And so when we are shooting more threes,
that's a great and playing off two feet and make
a place for our teammates. So kind of those five
five concepts. When we are playing great at an elite level,
through those five ways of attacking, we earn ourselves more three.

(49:49):
So when we're playing right, you know, this thirty three
is a game, is a little bit of an arbitrary marker,
but there's some some science in terms of just anecdotal,
repeated experience behind it. And so when we're playing great,
we earn ourselves threes, and we earn ourselves a lot
of threes. We earn them because we run so hard
in transition. We earn them because we're so so heavy

(50:09):
getting to the paint with two feet. We earn them
because because we make plays for our teammates, we earn
them because we work so hard for space. So we
would definitely like to increase the volume of threes. That's
really important to It'slacon. Are you on the phone?

Speaker 4 (50:23):
Hello, COACHLACN.

Speaker 3 (50:25):
What is up?

Speaker 9 (50:26):
It's coach Paul. How are you doing? Brother? How's practice
going right now? Is your coach going to be mad
that I dragged you out of practice to put you
on the phone?

Speaker 7 (50:40):
Now?

Speaker 9 (50:41):
Okay? Good well, Lake, And here's the deal. Your dad
called in and he was asking if we could do
a little happy birthday maybe video, but we're gonna do
one better. Okay, we're on the radio. This is worldwide radio,
right We're on radio nationwide right now, and so I
want to officially wish you a happy birthday on behalf

(51:05):
of me and the team and UK and all of BBN.
Happy birthday, Lake and my friend.

Speaker 27 (51:14):
Thank you.

Speaker 9 (51:15):
You're welcome. Brother. All right, get back out there and
get to work, man. He is amazing.

Speaker 32 (51:22):
