(05:27):
tomorrow night, and it is a whiteout, so where you're
white to historic Memorial Coliseum and cheer on the Wildcats
and keep them undefeated. At home, they're tearing it up,
coach Mark Pope, Man, they're good and what an unbelievable
season they're putting together. Well, you guys aren't half bad yourself.
After last night. That was quite a performance by your
guys to be shorthanded. And as you always you said,
(05:49):
you know, we'll.
Speaker 2 (05:50):
Bring that up.
Speaker 4 (05:51):
I'll ask you about it or one of the TV
guys and Okay, we've still got a lot of good
players on this team. And boy did they come through
last night. Yeah, it was. It was a fun team effort.
And yeah, you love those moments. I mean, it's the
best part of sports when you're in those moments where
maybe there's some adversity and there's some doubt and you're
not sure how things are to play out, and guys
just commit to each other and commit to the project
(06:14):
and you come out with a great result. It's the
best part of sports, and it's doing it at Kentucky
is better than anywhere else.
Speaker 2 (06:22):
So it's pretty pretty fun night.
Speaker 4 (06:24):
I'm going to talk a little bit about Jackson Robinson,
who's pressed into playing a point guard role for much
of that game with Lamont out and back when he
had his big game down a Mississippi State, you told
a story about, Hey, he came to you and talk
to you about some of the things he'd been going
through and how he was gonna, I guess make a
change something to that effect. I remember watching him a
(06:45):
shoot around that day and his whole body language was different.
Speaker 2 (06:48):
He just had an air of confidence.
Speaker 4 (06:50):
And he's shot fifty percent from the three point line
starting with that state game and scoring big for you
and doing playing great defense. So a that's gonna be
fun when you see a guy kind of work through
something and then really come out of it and go
great guns. Well, I mean, Jackson's Story's got so many
beginnings and endings, but probably the beginning of this particular
(07:12):
story was not the first ten minutes of the game
at Tennessee where he was so incredible, but it was
actually seventy two hours earlier at the end of a
really disappointing loss at Vanderbilt. So when we you know,
when we finished games, we have a bunch of responsibility
(07:35):
do We'll go in the you know, we'll go leave
the court and the team will have a few minutes together,
we'll meet as a staff, and then we'll come in
and talk to the team. And by the time we
got into the locker room, Jackson Robinson was still going.
He was still going talking about what this team was
supposed to be and what our mission was, and how
we fit together and how we had to count on
(07:57):
each other and what the expectation in terms of our
standard as a team was. And we walked in and
he was still going, and it wasn't berating his teammates.
It was just reaffirming the standard that we're trying to
hold ourselves to. And it was done really really forcefully
and positively and seriously, and and and and that you know, so,
(08:22):
you know, sometimes we don't get to see the beginning
of these little mini stories. But if you're gonna tell
a little mini story about Jackson robinson performance last night,
it started three nights earlier in a really sad locker
room at Vanderbilt, where he stood up and said, Okay,
this is not good enough, guys, this is not what
we're about, and we're gonna do this better. And that's
what makes that's what makes it great story, is when
(08:43):
you get to see the inside of that.
Speaker 2 (08:44):
I'm really proud of him.
Speaker 4 (08:45):
And what an unbelievable performance, you know, playing out a
position against the best defensive team in the country with
all the pressure that's associated with that, both the the
pressure just of the moment and also the pressure that
that defense exerts, and he was brilliant. That's an interesting story.
And is that out of character for him in a
(09:06):
good way? I mean, you've been with him now year
and a half. Two years ago, that was wildly out
of character for him. But he's grown every day. I mean,
he just is you know, it's it's it's it's I mean,
everybody that gets to to coach a team, or or
or or raise children, or or or be a part
of an organization where people step into new roles and
they grow and grow and grow, it's it's just the
(09:28):
best to watch guys grow. And actually Cody and I
were reflecting on that today in the office. We just
had a moment where we were talking together and and
just thinking about uh, just just how he's grown into
this really really just extraordinary leader.
Speaker 2 (09:46):
UH has been. It's been so fun to watch.
Speaker 4 (09:49):
Talk for a second about the fans that were there
last night. I didn't realize there were that many of
them there until minute and change left, and all at
once this to go big Blue comes up from the
crowd behind us, and it was pretty cool to hear.
Speaker 2 (10:06):
And I asked you about it the post game.
Speaker 4 (10:07):
You said, you're so into the game, you don't always
hear that, but I know your players certainly reacted to
it out on the court, and you've got a great
turnout after the game.
Speaker 2 (10:15):
Yeah. So I don't know if.
Speaker 4 (10:16):
It was that many of BBN or BBN's just super loud, right,
it could be both. But but I don't hear any
I hear nothing during the game, but at postgame you
see things, you know, videos pop up on social media feeds,
and so I saw one clip where no, no, that's
(10:37):
not true.
Speaker 2 (10:38):
I was. I was watching the game last night. After
I got home.
Speaker 4 (10:41):
We were breaking down the film and I was watching
the live television, the television feed, and at one point
Otaga always maybe twenty seven seconds left, twenty seconds to
give or take a couple of seconds left, and Otaga
always going to the free throw line and we're up three,
and so on the broadcast version, you start hearing in
(11:02):
the background on TV go big Blue, Go Big Blue,
and Jackson Robins starts nodding his head like this, and
Kobe Bray is like, yeah, yeah, yeah. And as I'm
watching the film, I know we've won the game. But
my reaction to this film is like, guys, we're only.
Speaker 11 (11:21):
Up three, there's twenty seconds left, Like we gotta win
the game. And so certainly our guys heard it, and
you know, it's one of countless stories of the greatest
fan base in all of sports.
Speaker 2 (11:37):
That is pretty cool. We're gonna get to a break.
Speaker 5 (11:39):

to watch BBN Tonight, presented by UK Healthcare, every weeknight
at seven thirty Eastern on WLX here in Lexington, and
can also watch archives shows at bbntnight dot com if
you miss the show. Let's get right into the questions.
We'll start with Brian on the X feed at UK
(15:25):
Sports Network. What does Trent Noah think about playing an
undersized power forward.
Speaker 2 (15:30):
Brian compares him to Darren Feldhause in that role. Yeah,
He's he's really dangerous.
Speaker 4 (15:36):
The space that he demands on the court is pretty
spectacular and he finds a way with his energy and
his physicality to kind of hold his own. There will
be sometimes when he's asked to play significant minutes, you know,
if he's playing at the four, where he might be
overmatched size wise around the rim a little bit. But
(15:58):
he's got really good feet man, he's got really good physicality.
He can chase guys uh through staggers and he can
you know, he's pretty were on ball screens. I thought
he was terrific last night. He's gonna be a terrific
player and he's making it. He's making an impact on
the team right now. It's so fun to have him
the play. Wait, which did is this true? I heard
this today for the first time. Is this mountain mamba
(16:18):
a real thing? Well, it's it's been thrown out there.
What do you think the mountain mob? I love it,
Mountain momba?
Speaker 2 (16:27):
What does he think? I don't know. I didn't, I haven't.
I haven't seen him today.
Speaker 4 (16:30):
I just I heard that to then I was like,
this is fantastic, pretty cool.
Speaker 2 (16:34):
Yeah, And how about two?
Speaker 4 (16:36):
I mean, it was incredible to have the confidence to
take that three from rural Tennessee. But then they play that, Uh,
I no goose thought it was one of the big
plays of the game. It looked like it was going
to be a turnover and he go take his pass,
it skipped off Kolbe's hand and trance on the backside.
He picks it up and then that but goes and scores.
His energy is so important. One of my favorite things.
So we do when we start staff meeting. Uh Matt
(16:58):
Santoro are video coach who's elite young coach, but he's
just working so hard.
Speaker 2 (17:06):
He does a.
Speaker 4 (17:09):
Kind of a we always like to start with a
fun video, some kind of something basketball related or not
basketball related. So he preps that every day. And he
actually had a clip of Noah hitting that three in
the Tennessee game. And if anybody wants to go back
and watch it, watch the sideline. It's actually brilliant. I
(17:30):
had no idea this was going on, but I got
the backstory. So you know, I trust my staff to
kind of be evaluating all the details of the game
as we're considering substitution and rotations and all the dynamics
to go into a foul issues and matchups and flow
with the game and fatigue and everything else.
Speaker 2 (17:48):
And and so I heard today as they were.
Speaker 4 (17:52):
Giving me the background on this clip that a couple
of staff members had said, Hey, we got it. We
got to make a change of rotation. We got to
get Trend out. We gotta get him out, we got
to get him out. And literally a few seconds later,
he bangs that freeze from the top of the key
and Jason Hart, Coach Hart, who had been saying, no, man,
(18:12):
he's he's playing good like he's.
Speaker 2 (18:14):
Got good energy.
Speaker 4 (18:15):
Literally they've had this debate like five seconds before this
shot goes down. And so if you look closely at
our bench, you see Jason Hart watch the shot go in,
jump out of his seat and start talking to the
other two assist Like I told you guys, he's giving
him five. And that's kind of the dynamics that are
happening on the bench. And it was fun to watch
(18:36):
that today. So kudos to Matt Santoro for finding that footage.
All right, let's go to the Clark's Papa Chet phone line. Scott,
what do you have for coach Pope?
Speaker 2 (18:48):
That great job, have to say, the job he's doing.
Speaker 18 (18:53):
But one thing really concerns me.
Speaker 19 (18:56):
It's all the turnovers. Look, can we eliminate the turnovers?
Speaker 4 (19:04):
I think we have, don't cheetah, Scott, we only had thirteen.
We only had thirteen, Scott. Don't don't inflate the numbers
on me. Thank you, Scott. Hey, Scott. First of all,
great question. And can I tell you all the pain.
I don't know if you're actually coming to the games
or just watching them on the team TV, but all
(19:26):
the pain that you're feeling with every turnover.
Speaker 2 (19:28):
I'm feeling it too, brother, I know it.
Speaker 4 (19:32):
And we have a we have a you know, we're
actually one of the best ball protection teams in the country. Uh,
We've we've stumbled a little bit in the league. We've
slipped a little bit in the league. At one point
this season we were actually the number one ball protection
team in the country.
Speaker 2 (19:49):
It's something we focus on.
Speaker 4 (19:50):
But what's interesting for us about these turnovers is that
there there, we're dealing with some things that are complicated. One,
we're playing against the best deal literally last night, the
best defensive team in the entire country. We're playing against,
you know, kind of on our regular basis, teams that
are in the top thirty every night in terms of
forcing turnovers. And then we're also playing some interesting unique
(20:13):
lineups right now where we're asking guys to really stretch themselves.
With all that said, our focus, you know, we never
want to go into a play or a game thinking
about not turning the ball over. We will talk endlessly
about the ways that we protect the ball. So you'll
hear us talk about two hands, two feet, ball strong,
(20:37):
kda's d d LS, driving lines, pop rule, simple play like.
We're really hyper focused on doing what we do to
protect the ball. It's an area where you know, interestingly enough,
and our losses were upside down and our if you
take our our top one hundred losses, we're upside down
(20:59):
in terms of assists to turn over. If you take
out the Alabama game, we're upside down and in the
games we lose. That's been a real problem for so Scott,
I'm feeling your pain. It's something that we're working on
and addressing every single day and we expect to continue
to get better at it.
Speaker 2 (21:12):
Hanging there with us, brother or.

Let's get our Alumni Hall.
Speaker 5 (23:55):
Question of the Week comes from Chandler, and if your
question is chosen for the nine Hall Question of the Week,
you could win a twenty five dollars gift card from
Alumni Hall. Chandler wants to know when dealing with injuries
like you are now, how does that affect your practice plan? Yeah, Chandler,
A great question.
Speaker 4 (24:12):
You know, listen, the way our league is, every single
team is dealing with with injury, sickness, fatigue, uh, you know,
all those things, and so you're.
Speaker 2 (24:26):
Always kind of juggling.
Speaker 4 (24:27):
But it's part of what makes it fun, right, It
makes it really interesting and and it also is full
of opportunity. One of the things that's been really interesting
in the last couple of games is we've had to
rethink some parts of the way we play and the
way we space the floor and the way we attack
and where the ball can be. It it forces you
(24:48):
to kind of develop some spaces of the game that
maybe you weren't paying attention to. And it allows us
to do that in practice too. And so it it's
it's uh, it's it's you know, sometimes you have to
temper your practice. We have some guys uh that will
will go lighter tomorrow than normal just because you know
(25:11):
they they went through it yesterday.
Speaker 2 (25:13):
Uh.
Speaker 4 (25:14):
You know, if you saw the game Otaga oh way
Uh came down really really hard and and and bounced
all the off the floor all the way back on
to his feet. It was so violent and he got
a little bit of sort as he's actually gonna be fine.
He's healthy, but uh, he's gonna deal with some things.
And and so you know, every time that you have
somebody that misses a couple reps or a day or
(25:36):
a couple of days in practice, it's really an opportunity
for you to flesh out some new things with your team.
And ultimately, if you do it well, then you start
to plug holes and fill gaps and and get to
think more creatively.
Speaker 2 (25:49):
So it's pretty fun process.
Speaker 4 (25:50):
Since we mentioned injuries, everybody will want me to ask
you if there's any update on Lamont or Andrew.
Speaker 2 (25:56):
Yeah.
Speaker 4 (25:56):
So as of today, like when I left the office
of if I fifty, Lamont is not good to go tonight,
We'll see how he is in the morning.
Speaker 2 (26:04):
We'll take it minute by a minute. I told you
I was.
Speaker 4 (26:07):
I was checking in every five every media time out
to see if I could get him for the next
media time out in last game, but there was a no.
That's a good song too, but the Doobie Brothers. Let's
go to the Clark's Pumping Shop phone line.
Speaker 18 (26:18):
Jonathan, Hey, coach Pope, Jonathan here, just got one question
for you. But first of all, I just want to
tell you're doing a great job. Nobody bleeds blue bigger
than I do.
Speaker 2 (26:29):
Go Cats.
Speaker 18 (26:29):
Appreciate the offense that you're running. It's awesome. I can
remember you thirty four now, but I can remember you
on that ninety six ninety eight team. I got a
T shirt signed by you and the Blast across the Bluegrass.
Speaker 2 (26:41):
So that's all.
Speaker 18 (26:43):
Just glad you're our coach. But the question I have
is Saturday night obviously we got a big game, and
I just was wondering if you were playing on doing
anything talking to the fans, because I think coach Cal
deserves the proper appreciation and reception when he returns to
the historic and go big Blue.
Speaker 2 (27:02):
Yeah, Jonathan, thanks for calling man. Great question.
Speaker 4 (27:05):
Uh, hey, listen, we have been blessed at the University
of Kentucky to have some of the greatest coaches to
ever coach the game of basketball. Certainly Cal is one
of those. He's he's a Hall of Fame coach. In
his fifteen year tenure, what he accomplis at the University
of Kentucky was incredible. He in some ways he revolutionized
the game of college basketball and he's left a legacy
(27:27):
that probably won't be ever reproduced in the same way.
Speaker 2 (27:32):
That he did it.
Speaker 4 (27:34):
And and uh, you know, a as a member of
BBN and a huge fan of of Kentucky basketball.
Speaker 2 (27:40):
My whole heart is here. Uh.
Speaker 4 (27:43):
And I love Cal. I love Cal for what he
did for for Kentucky basketball. And on a very personal level,
he's been he's been so to Leanne and I as
a mentor and a friend, and so uh, you know,
it's it's It's a little bit of a complicated relationship
right now because he's coached and the other team and
so that always.
Speaker 2 (28:02):
Makes it complicated.
Speaker 4 (28:03):
But you know, I know that I know BBN man,
I just know our fan base, and I know there
will be all kai There's gonna be so much emotion
because we care so much. So there will be so
much emotion in the gym on Saturday. And as time
goes on and circumstances change, Uh, there's gonna be a
(28:23):
time when Cal walks back into this arena and he
is gonna feel all of the love that BBN possibly
has to offer, because that's what we do with our family.
Speaker 2 (28:34):
Now.
Speaker 4 (28:34):
You know, we'll see Thursday, like Friday, Saturday, Saturday is
gonna be you know, it's also a competition, right, so.
Speaker 2 (28:42):
It's just gonna be what it is.
Speaker 24 (28:43):
Uh.
Speaker 4 (28:44):
But but you know, I have a ton of love
for Cal, and I'm grateful for what he did here
at Kentucky, and I'm grateful that, you know, I get
to be here and and enjoy some of the fruits
of his incredible labors here, and so, uh, I'm super
appreciative of him. And I know everybody in BBN feels
the same way, even though I also know everybody at
BBN wants to win this game on Saturday.
Speaker 2 (29:05):
Jonathan, thank you for the question.
Speaker 5 (29:07):
Let's get one off with social media feed at UK
Sports Network from bullsh he said he felt last night
was a game where the team kept trust in the
offense and guys didn't try to do too much.
Speaker 2 (29:17):
You see the same thing. I was really proud of
our cutting.
Speaker 25 (29:21):
You know.
Speaker 4 (29:22):
I know I say this all the time and everyone's like, ah, geez, cutting,
Can we stop talking about cutting? But our moving off
the ball was really really important, and during the game
I felt good about it. Watching the film late last
night early this morning, I felt even better about our
guys commitment to it. We weren't super creative, but we
(29:43):
were pretty determined. We didn't do a great job keeping
our space integrity, we didn't do a great job screening,
but we did. We were pretty relentless with our off
ball movement and that was a major key in us
finding our way into open shots. So certainly in the
seeds of doing some special things were there last night,
(30:04):
and I think it made it really complicated for Tennessee
to be able to guard us consistently. We're coming up
on a body of our break, so we'll get to
more questions and questions of social media and the phones.
Let me ask you one real quickly, though, Can you
make it of mariy Williams' birthday every game day?
Speaker 2 (30:20):
Hey man, what a great birthday for Mari Williams. What
an incredible effort.
Speaker 4 (30:25):
I'm telling you, guys, we've been blessed by some incredible,
unique performances, and this one might not like just glareity.
It wasn't a fifty point game or anything like that,
But I don't know when the last time or the
next time that we will see a performance like that
from a player that has his diverse and unique as
(30:47):
skill set in with his team and desperately need of his.
Speaker 2 (30:52):
Help as we did from Amari Williams.
Speaker 4 (30:54):
I don't think we fully appreciate how special it is
what he did last night. I don't think there's actually
another play in college basketball that he could do what
he did last night in college basketball this year. I
just think he's a one of one in that way,
and it was really special to watch, man. It was
special to evaluate as we did the autopsy, and it
was a great performance.

We are back on the UK Healthcare Mark Pope Show.
Let me do this, read about an exciting new project
and then this will kind of segue into what you
were just talking about. Uksn all Access, presented by UK
Federal Credit Union, is the best way to get official, radio,
TV and digital content about the Cats from the UK
Sports Network and it's getting ready to launch on January
thirty first. Uk sn all Access is available at the
(35:03):
UK Athletics App or you can go to uk sn
all access dot com to set up a free account
today presented by UK Federal Credit Union. And I think
what you were just talking about with your wife, that
would be great content to launch this new Oh yes,
she would crush. It would go viral so fast. So
what do you think? No, Hey, that's that's negotiations. But
(35:24):
see them and Lea. You know she has not hired
me as her agent yet. Let's go back to the
Clark's prop and chop phone line, Jay, what do you
have for coach Pope? Jay Yellow j All right, let's
move on, Austin, You're next up.
Speaker 26 (35:42):
Awesome coach Pope obviously, now with you know Jackson getting
significant minutes last night at the point guard with Laman out,
and obviously he's going to be day to day if
he's unable to go Saturday and when Zaki Zeger being
a fantastic you know, defensive guard, but you know a
little smaller compared to guys like John L. Davis and
djar H you know, Arkansas more defensive oriented guards. Right now,
(36:04):
do you first see any kind of changes in point guard,
maybe even like a Mauri bringing up more significant minutes
like we did towards the end of the game last night.
Speaker 2 (36:12):
Thanks for the time post.
Speaker 4 (36:14):
Yeah, awesome, Thanks for the question. The answer is yes,
it's kind of all hands on deck. So we actually
we actually, uh had just about everybody on the roster
help us initiate offense last night. Of course, Mary took
a starring role in that in the wanning moments of
the game and kind of throughout the game. Jackson was crucial. Uh,
(36:36):
Travis Perry is a guy that can really help us there.
Kobe Brea actually had his best downhill penetration game that
he's had so far this entire season. He had three,
uh you know, attack the rim possessions in particular that.
Speaker 2 (36:52):
Were really really elite level. I was so proud of him.
Speaker 4 (36:55):
And somebody's been working really hard at We really trust
Otega with the ball and so for us, you know,
it's kind of the way you do this if you
you know, if you're if you're naked at a position
like we are right now, it turns out to be
a by committee project and and it'll continue to be
that way for the foreseeable future. And and uh, you know,
(37:17):
we have guys that are that are really working hard.
Speaker 2 (37:19):
To to to answer the bell and get that done. Austin,
thank you for the question.
Speaker 4 (37:22):
Let's go back to the social media feed at UK
Sports Network from Brad wonders how much weight you give
to the plus minus number that's on the stat sheet? Yeah, Brad, great,
great question. The plus minus is is just a it's
a tool where it literally just takes the change and
score while you're on the floor. So if you're a
(37:43):
minus seven, that means in the minutes that you were
on the floor that you uh, you know, the the
change and score was seven points against you.
Speaker 2 (37:51):
Right. So it's a pretty broad.
Speaker 4 (37:54):
Brush number, so we put some you know, we will
pay attention to it. It is especially for guys that
played in several different segments of the game. Sometimes it
can be it can be you know, unfair for guys
that we were limited minutes or you know, sometimes it
could be unfair to guys that played the massive bulk
(38:14):
of minutes either four or against. If you know, if
you end up winning the game by twenty five and
you've played thirty five minutes of the game, maybe you're
getting credit for those that plus twenty five even though
there was a twenty point run, you know, in a
four minute segment of the game that involved other guys
on the team. More so, it's a little bit of broadbrush.
(38:36):
We're spending a lot of time now with leverage. So
what leverage is is it's a mind numbingly esoteric analytical tool.
Speaker 2 (38:44):
But what your leverage is is what it does. It
takes your.
Speaker 4 (38:49):
Impact on the score through an algorithm compared to your
impact when you're of the to how the game goes
when you're not on the floor, compared to the averagege
player in college basketball, and it's weighted in very different
significant ways. And and so that's a way way more
(39:10):
detailed version of a plus minus. And usually when you
when you use those two in harmony, it gives you
a pretty accurate view of kind of impact guys you're
having on the court.
Speaker 2 (39:20):
Thank you for the question.
Speaker 4 (39:21):
Let's go to one here that came in from Scott
wants to know if everybody just turned off the show.
Everybody's like, Okay, we are not interested in this at all.
Are we really talking about leverage on the radio show.
Let's spice it.
Speaker 2 (39:37):
Up all right?
Speaker 4 (39:38):
Well, I don't know if this will do the trick
or not, but we'll see. Travis Perry, Scott says, has
shot the ball. Well, could he be effective playing off
the ball when Lamont comes back? Yes, he could, absolutely.
I think tp Is uh Man he's really dangeroushooting the ball.
He's also great as a playmaker and and and you know,
(39:58):
the more ballhandler we can have on the floor at
at the same time right now is a win for us.
There are times when we feel like we have zero
ball handlers on the floor, and so tp Is is
showing that he's got to revenge this amount of confidence
being on attack with the ball in his hands. And
he could do that as a point guard, is an
(40:20):
off guard, he could do it a lot of different ways.
I think we talked about this off the air and
not on the air, And if we did talk about
it on the air, then it's worth repeating.
Speaker 2 (40:27):
Colin Chandler gave you a great minute lesson. Yes he did.
Speaker 4 (40:30):
I thought it was Colin's best game, especially going back
and reviewing the film. I thought he was absolutely fantastic defensive,
really tough defensive assignment.
Speaker 2 (40:39):
I thought he was he was really lights out.
Speaker 4 (40:42):
I thought he was super aggressive, super active, you know,
came into the game and immediately went to a reject
bowl screen, got to the block, played off two feet
antsy Almanor for a big three that kind of helped
us with a little bit of a momentum part of
the game. Came up with a huge deflection steal that
was really important us. You know, had a great championship
(41:04):
chess with number fifteen there starting small forties, really really
physical and kind of kept him out of laying multiple
move defensive possession, did a great job on chaz In there.
Chaz made one shot over him where Chaz had actually
got downhill to fifteen feet and had to readjust and
kind of shoot a real high jump shot kind of
(41:26):
from behind his head. But it was an unbelievable challenge.
I thought Colin was really good. He looked really comfortable
on the floor, and he can really help us defensively.
His athleticism can really be an impact for us defensively
in a part of the game that we need right now.
Speaker 2 (41:40):
Had a great assist too. Yes he did, Yes he did.
Speaker 4 (41:43):

Let's go back to the Clark's Pumping Shop phone line
and jack you are next up on the phone lines
(44:46):
for coach Mark Pope Jack, what do you have, Hey.
Speaker 18 (44:50):
Coach, I just had a question about the last four
minutes of halves the last few games, going back.
Speaker 2 (44:57):
To the second half of the Alabama game.
Speaker 18 (44:59):
And the band game on Saturday, and the first.
Speaker 19 (45:01):
Half last night and even the second second half to
the last five minutes, we've seen to kind of go
cold shooting the ball or scoring. Is that something that's
been noticed by you and the staff. Is it something
that's sort of a trend. Is it something that you're
concerned with or is it just coincidental? And if it
is something that you've noticed, is there any way that
(45:22):
you all are going about particularly addressing it or do
you have any thoughts on that. I'll hang up and listen.
Speaker 2 (45:28):
Yeah, thanks for the question. So a couple of things.
Speaker 4 (45:31):
The answer is yes, that's always you know, in the
game situations and a half situations are really important for
all of us, and we're trying to manage a lot
of things. So last night we actually, you know, we
rebounded the ball really well for seventeen minutes in the
first half and seventeen minutes in the second half, and
the last three minutes of both halves just turned into
(45:54):
a mess on the glass for a lot of different reasons.
One where they're there were some hectic shots. Uh, they
were taking long, crazy bounces to credit Tennessee because they
were they were just they were bull rushing multiple move guys.
You know a lot of times when you're attacking the glass,
(46:16):
you kind of are you know, you wedge high side
to kind of keep the integrity of your transition defense
kind of high side to contact, and they were going
multiple move and we were missing.
Speaker 2 (46:26):
We were whiffing.
Speaker 4 (46:27):
When you watch the film, you're like, my gosh, we're
missing guys on blockouts. So the good thing is we
had a lot of guys that were super intentional about trying.
We just actually failed at the skill. So I know
you you're you're talking about scoring, but when we talk
about last three minutes of the game, that was the really,
really glaring part of it last night. And then we
didn't shoot the ball particularly well from the free throw
(46:48):
line at the end of the game, which is which
is an area that can sometimes be a little deceptive.
You know, if we if we if we are really
effective at the free throw line and latent games, that
would clean that up. But what happens a lot of
times is you spend a lot of time with the
free throw line and and and so you want.
Speaker 2 (47:06):
To pay off there.
Speaker 4 (47:08):
It also gets a little dicey right your face, you're
you we're facing uh a ton of pressure laden games,
a lot of full court press. The game gets a
little hectic, and so we're trying to iron out especially
missing point guard play. And and I'll be honest with that,
(47:29):
I would even include that a little bit. In the
Vanderbook game, uh La Motte was in so much pain.
Uh you know, it was it was really hard for
him to function the way he normally does, and so
turnovers became an issue there.
Speaker 2 (47:43):
But trying to trying.
Speaker 4 (47:45):
To kind of you're always you know, fighting yourself between
uh play calling against a press or attacking the press,
or letting your guys kind of run into their natural
secondary offense. All those things are a little complicated, especially
when you're when you're suffling in and out point guards
(48:05):
a different lineup. So you take all that sioux fla
together and try and work out some details. And it's
it's a place where we'd like to continue to grow
and get better. We also have had some unbelievable late
game performances where our guys have executed brilliant and so
it's it's a space where we'd like to continue to
get better. And then I'm proud of what our guys
has done so far, and we're we're we're definitely paying
(48:27):
attention to a great question, long answer.
Speaker 2 (48:30):
Thank you.
Speaker 4 (48:30):
Jack Tyler asks, when Andrew comes back, do you think
you could ever use a big lineup with Hansley at
the three and Andrew at the four? Yes, I do.
We we played one possession of zone. If you watch
the game really closely, we played one possession of a
(48:50):
two three zone. We're calling, well, anyway, I'm not going
to tell you what we're calling because that's top secret.
Sometimes I say too much. And uh, the reason why
you might not have noticed was that was that Tennessee
scored in like six seconds, so you might have missed it.
And after that siccuts six seconds, we're like, okay, we're
(49:13):
not going back to the zone. But we've thought about
putting bigger and bigger lineups on the floor and finding
creative ways to guard I thought our guys.
Speaker 2 (49:21):
Uh.
Speaker 4 (49:21):
We spent a couple of segments, Uh, in the game
late and and midway through where we were switching one
through five and I thought our guys were actually super effective.
We ended up in a point six points for possession
on six total possessions switching one through five, and I
thought that.
Speaker 2 (49:35):
Was really good. But those are things you could do
with a bigger lineup. Thank you for the question. We're
heading to a break.

Got a few minutes left on this edition of the
UK Healthcare Mark Pope Show. Let's go back to the
Clark's Pumping Shop phone line and we have Wayne next
up with Coach Pope.
Speaker 18 (53:21):
Go ahead, Wayne, Hey, how you doing?
Speaker 4 (53:24):
Coach Pope glad to help you back.
Speaker 2 (53:27):
Wayne, Thank you, my friend. What I'm going to ask
you about.
Speaker 25 (53:33):
Is the lineup that you had last night. Okay, Now,
I'm taking anything against Lama and Butler. I love his play,
I love his termination, the way he steals the mall.
But he's been perfect. If you go back to the
Gonzaga game, well, he got hurt at the half, we
were down by twelve, and you put this same lineup
and we came back and going. And it's like when
(53:56):
these two bigs are in there. Now you can use
this lineup as long as one of the two big
doesn't get in foul trouble. But if one of them
gets in foul trouble, you can't use that lineup, you know,
I mean, but it's like that lineup is just amazing
to me.
Speaker 2 (54:13):
I mean, I don't know what are your thoughts on that? Wayne?
Are you are you find to having Amari and Big
on the floor together?
Speaker 4 (54:23):
Yeah, Wayne, Yeah, yeah, so yes, it's actually really interesting.
Speaker 2 (54:27):
So it's a give and take like everything.
Speaker 4 (54:30):
So we've had, you know, we've been kind of running
some ram high ball skating offensive. It's just like dumbed
down offense that everybody in the country does. Really where
we're finding some love for Otega and then actually uh
kolbe Prao has actually had some real life in it
also where we can run that with two bigs now,
beij shooting the ball has helped us for sure. We're
(54:51):
very much a forced teams to guard in space team.
That's a real principle, So Big shooting the ball helps
us earn a little bit of space that teams have
to guard.
Speaker 2 (55:02):
Uh.
Speaker 4 (55:03):
Mary Williams has done an unbelievable job growing into a
duck player where you're you might start in the block,
but you're actually you actually duck so hard across the
lane that you're actually taking a defense out of rotation.
You're creating space on the floor by actually taking up space.
Speaker 2 (55:22):
I wish I wish this was TV we could do
I could show you on video what I mean.
Speaker 4 (55:26):
So there's ways that we've found where we can do
mitche niche minutes where those guys can be on the
floor together. One of the complications I run into right now,
especially with AC being out or or you know, as
he comes back, where we're trying to protect us back
a little bit, is if I have Beg and Aamario
on the floor, they're both like four or five max
(55:48):
minute rotation guys. If they're on the floor together and
they fatigue at the same time, it gets really dicey
for me out there trying to grab a rebound when
I sub those two guys out. So that that's problem
one of the biggest hold Those are the two things. One,
we're trying to figure out how we can effectively play
those guys together where we're still forcing teams to guard
(56:09):
in space, where we're still creating space in the game
and some unique creative ways. And two, what do I
do when those guys fatigue together at the same time. So,
but I do think there's space. There's space for those
two guys to be on the floor together. I think
there's ways for us to be creative and effective. We
just have to be super judicious about when we do
it for the for the reasons we already talked about.
(56:29):
Great question, Thanks for all the questions. We got a
little over a minute left. Uh, we'll follow up on that.
Tend to say that you are very bullish on what
kind of shooter the Garrison can become.
Speaker 2 (56:39):
Yes, I am.
Speaker 4 (56:40):
You know, he missed one last night because he was
so his legs were gone. But this Brandon Garrison, I think, guys,
I'm telling you we're gonna be talking about him as
being a dangerous, dangerous, dangerous shooter here in the months
and and and and the year to come. All Right,
we appreciate the time as always, Thanks to all the
folks that listened any week and call in and send
(57:01):
in your questions. And what a tremendous night it was
for I mean, it's one thing to get a key win,
but to do it over the balls. BBN loves it,
you know that. Yeah, yep, it's a great night. Congratulations
to you and you guys.
Speaker 2 (57:14):
Thanks Bob.
Speaker 5 (57:15):
