earlier today, there were just a few news items. Who
was as you would expect, asked about Brock Vandergriff and

(01:41):
his injury at the quarterback position, also about Barry and
Brown at wide receiver, and coach Stops said there's no
update that he wanted to share at this time and
he would talk about it later in the week. He
was also asked about rumors that get out there where
he might consider stepping away after this season, and he
said there's zerochans of that happening. And he also talked

(02:03):
about having Maxwell Harston back, and he said it's very
nice to have the cornerback position back at full strength.
So it'll be great to see Maxwell out there and
hopefully he can come up with a pick six like
he did the last time he was on the field
back in September. We're gonna get to our first break,
we'll come back chat with Vince, and then we'll get

Welcome back into the UK Healthcare Mark Stoop Show. We
are joined by Associate Head Coach Recruiting Coordinator Tight Ends,
coach NFL liaison, a jack of all trades coach Vince Merriw.
How you doing, coach doing good?

Speaker 12 (06:04):
Uh?

Speaker 6 (06:05):
Just got to practice, you know, being back from breaking.
The guys look pretty fresh and look you know, good
out there. A lot of young guys are running around,
but it's good to have some guys back then. You
know that was kind of banged up a little bit.

Speaker 3 (06:18):
You hope that in addition to healing up physically, they
kind of recharge the batteries mentally. I'm sure I guess too.

Speaker 6 (06:25):
Yeah, I think Coach Stukes does a good job. But
when we're going into a break that he gives guys
like a good two days off and you know, trying
to come back refresh and ready to go. And God,
like I say, guys look pretty fast out there today.

Speaker 3 (06:37):
Yeah, it's nice to get your legs back. This time
of year, everybody's a little beat up, and I mean
especially on the defensive side of the ball. You guys
were very shorthanded down to Tennessee in the last game,
and then the offensive side took some hits during the
course of the game.

Speaker 6 (06:51):
Yeah, what they say, we were down twelve or I
don't know, was it ten starters. It looked like we
was down a whole bunch, But we had some young
guys fill in, and you know, that's what you do, recruit,
and you hope guys when they're you know, second team
or third team, they get their chance, they show what
they can do. And you know, we have recruited well
over the last couple of years, and I just think
some of these young guys stepped up.

Speaker 3 (07:13):
It's a game this week where you face a Murray
State team that is struggling. But I also remember a
game a few years ago where Steven Johnson was hurt
and came out and you got in an early hole.
You won the game going away, but you know, you
don't take anything for granted in this world.

Speaker 6 (07:30):
Yeah, yeah, Tom, that did not start off the way
we thought it was. It was like a pick six, man,
it was a pick six. We're off the rip. I
think we were down where we down twelve or fourteen?
I think it was fourteen. It is Austin p Yeah,
and Stephen put on this cape and came back in.
Yes he did rescue today. But you can't in college football.
It's like they say, any give us Sunday's any give
us Saturday, A team can beat you. I think we

(07:51):
need to worry about ourselves, work on what we need
to work on, and go out and play football this Saturday.

Speaker 3 (07:57):
What are some of those things that are points of infancy?
For your team this week.

Speaker 6 (08:02):
I just think the things that's been hindering us, you know,
whether it's just as signments, whether it's just technique, whether
it's just you know, being on time on a snap
count or not jumping all sides, just the little things,
and I think that haunt us in some other games
that we should have won if we would have just
did the little things right. And so you just want
to keep going forward as you got these three games left,

(08:23):
to try to be more attention detail and try to
go win these last three games.

Speaker 3 (08:27):
Offense got off to a fast start in that last
game with the big run from Jamerian and then didn't
get it in on the first drive, but you did
on the second against a very stout Tennessee defense. So offensively,
when you're at full strength, do you think it's starting
to come together?

Speaker 2 (08:47):
Yes, I think.

Speaker 6 (08:49):
You know, we had a good game plan going into
that week, and you know, you look at Tennessee, I
think they were number seventeen. I mean, look at the
teams we have played. Ole miss was five, Georgia was one,
and go on and on. I just think we had
some self inflicted wounds and I thought we got off
to a really good start on the hostile environment. And
you know a lot of young guys and you know

(09:11):
some of the older guys. They just came together and
we just executed. I wish we could have did got
points to first drive, but I like where we were at.

Speaker 2 (09:17):
In that game.

Speaker 6 (09:18):
I thought we was handling that moment very well.

Speaker 3 (09:21):
Yeah, a couple of turnovers led to two touchdowns for them,
and I was looking at those numbers. The turnovers have
been a real bugaboo in the last month versus the
first part of the year. Those games against Georgian and
Old Miss that have been offen sided. You guys had
very few turnovers in those first five games.

Speaker 6 (09:38):
I learned this from a great head coach that I
love to this day, coach Martin Levy, who I played
for for the Dolls, and he I never I was young,
and he always talked about the turnover margin, and I
had no idea what he was talking about, like going
into detail, But when you look at it, we played
Old Miss, I don't think we turned the ball over
one time down there. When you play good compromary football
and your guys are playing in the hot cylinder, you

(09:58):
can go down and you can go win them games,
and that's what Coach Douce is stressing. You know, today's
practice all by week and our guys, we're seeing guys
do some good things, some young guys stepping up. So
I'm excited about these these next three games coming up.

your questions if you want to send them in on

(15:03):
you can get out and cheer on the UK women's
soccer team before you head back to Kroger Field on
Saturday for an early start for Kentucky and Murray State.
Maxwell Harriston House, he looks since he's returned.

Speaker 2 (15:16):
He looked.

Speaker 6 (15:17):
I watched him to day. I didn't even realize that
was him. We were going against the defense and we
threw out route and it's number one. Just you just
seen that blur just go across and I was like wow.
I told one of the young tight ends, Willie, why
we're gonna say, that's what an NFL corner looks like
right there? He looks, he's he. I mean, it's good
to have him back. He really was playing at a
high level and we very excited for him to be back.

Speaker 3 (15:38):
He's a guy, good example of somebody that can make
a big splash from one season to the next because
he played very little two years ago. Yeah, got pressed
into action late in a game against Vanderbilt and got
burned on a play. Yes, you know that could Well,
they did nothing to affect his confidence certainly, and he
came back in the next year. He was great from

(15:59):
day one. And I'm guessing there are some young guys
in your program now that are like Max in twenty
two that we don't know anything much about other than
maybe from signing day, that are maybe ready to make
a big breakout next season.

Speaker 6 (16:15):
Yeah, we got a couple of young guys that I mean, well,
I hate to say a lot of the guys played.
I mean some of the young guys you've been seeing
out there freshmen and red shirt freshmen were guys that
you know was thrown in early to play because of,
you know, the situation we had the secondary t Ryan Nichols,
DJ Waller. I mean just guys. You know, you look

(16:36):
and you say, wow, these guys really should be red
shirt and now they're playing and they're actually doing a
pretty good job. I'm excited about some of the younger
linemen as you've seen. You know, big fella, did you know,
He's really in their battle And I think he's gonna
be a big time player.

Speaker 3 (16:54):
I really Malakai.

Speaker 6 (16:55):
Wood, I really like him and I can't wait to
see you know, ABBA's gonna get in there and start playing.
And you know, he was a highly recruited young man.
So it's we do a good job and developing these
guys is just you know, sometimes they get thrown in
a little early and and they in the fire, and
you know, you got to step up and play.

Speaker 3 (17:13):
But sometimes it turns out well. I remember Drake Jackson
who's on the staff now. He got thrown in mid
season as a red shirt freshman down in Starkville, Yes,
and then just became an anchor of that offensive line
for several years the rest of his career.

Speaker 6 (17:28):
Really, yeah, it's four year starter and what a better
way to get you know, get introduced and being down
to Starkville with all them bills and all that stuff.
So it really helped Drake in the long run because
he really became one of the better centers they ever
played here.

Speaker 3 (17:40):
Malachi has gotten a lot of reps at that right
tackle spot against some of the best edge rushers in
You guys are gonna be playing on Sundays. How is
how is he handling that. I'm sure his head could
be swimming at times.

Speaker 6 (17:53):
I think it comes in too. You know, that's why
you're gonna have good leaders, good older guys like both
Cox guys, Marcus and Eli. You know, he got beat
like he played study but then he got beat one time.
And I think he was putting a lot of pressure
on himself. And you know, guys like coach Wolf Drake
me just stoops people just saying to him, Hey, you

(18:15):
got to see the bigger picture. And I'm telling you
that kid canna be playing on Sundays. He has every
measurable He's six eight, six nine three ten long wingspan, athletic,
that's what you look for, that's what the scouts look for.

Speaker 3 (18:27):
Looking at him, just body type. It reminds me when
I see him of Calvin Taylor on the other side
of the big guy that took a couple of years
but became an All SEC caliber player.

Speaker 12 (18:38):
Yeah.

Speaker 6 (18:39):
And the thing is, Calvin Taylor was not like a
highly recruited guy Malachi was. And it's hard to find
them guys. It's like back in the day when he
was looking for seven foot centers. You got the six eight,
you know, Like I say six eight sixty nine guy
that can move and got long arms. That's the projection.
Like a lot of scouts be on our practice and
they're like, man, who is that kid? And I say,

(18:59):
he's a rensher forsh We'll be back for him.

Speaker 3 (19:02):
Yeah, they want to put him on their lists. I
am fighting a cold tonight. If you guys can't tell,
so I apologizes. We have to turn to the mic
once in a while. Let me get to a break
when we're finished. Up here on the UK Healthcare Mark

(22:18):
more per person, So you've got a chance to take
advantage of that. Coming up this weekend as the Cats
will take on the Murray State Racers. It's a one
thirty Eastern time kickoff, so our pregame coverage will start
at eleven thirty on Saturday morning. From out at Kroger Field,
we're visiting with associate head coach Vince Barrow here. A

(22:40):
little bit later, Trayvon Ripke is going to join us
to talk about an award that he has received from
Big Brothers Big Sisters, and also about how his senior
season is going as well. Right now, let's get to
the Alumni Hall Fan question of the week, and it
comes from Logan, and I'm going to reshape his question
just a little bit because I think I know what

(23:01):
he's asking. He says, how often do you watch opponents
film through the week or do you just focus on
that week's opponent. So I assume it means do you
ever look at few upcoming opponents while you're preparing for
the next game on the schedule.

Speaker 6 (23:14):
No, you can't do that. You know, normally are a
week goes like this. We will play a game Saturday.
We'll get in Sunday after church around one o'clock. We
were breaking down as defensive offensive staff. We'll meet with
coach Stoops to go over the game, and then we
will move on to the next opponent. And them are
long days. Monday you can be coming office from seven

(23:37):
and be there till eleven. Next day, the same thing
Wednesday kind of comes down. By Thursday, we have our
game plan pretty much done and then we be ready
to play the game Saturday.

Speaker 3 (23:49):
But there are some analysts, yes, that have responsibility for
breaking down the tape, looking ahead and not that you're
preparing for the upcoming opponents. But they're given your a
little head start.

Speaker 6 (24:00):
Yeah, okay, I'm missing, I'm missing still what you was saying. So, yeah,
we have our QC's and our analysts. They were they
actually been watching Texas probably the last two weeks, and
they would have they already had everything done and we
knew what we were you know how we wanted to
attack them and wanted to just as you watch it
as an offense, say okay, this is what they do.
But we had guys watch them two weeks earlier.

Speaker 3 (24:22):
But before before staffs were expanded, there wasn't an option.
You very much had to stay because the worst thing
you could do is be looking ahead and then get burned.

Speaker 6 (24:30):
And get beat And so that's what this audition for
staff that was really huge. And so you have I
mean NFL has it every year where they have guys
breaking down opponents while they're working.

Speaker 2 (24:39):
On another opponent.

Speaker 3 (24:40):
So Logan, thank you for the question and for sending

have a question for us for coach merriw you can
and send it in on x at UK Sports Network.

(25:03):
You can post on the Kentucky Football Facebook page or
give us a call on the Clark's Pumping Shop phone
lines two eight oh cats inside Lexington. That's two aight
oh two two eight seven elsewhere, it's one eight hundred
and six oh six four to six three. Uh. Jamarion
Wilcox had his best game, first one hundred yard rusher
of the season actually going back to probably the middle

(25:25):
of the last season, and got fifty of them on
the very first run, Mark said today at his weekly
news conference, And that was an intentional, intentional and part
of the this or as part of the plan to
get him more carries in that Senbas game.

Speaker 6 (25:40):
Yeah, I think Jay has done a really good job
with him. That that young man is a very talented
young man. And uh, you know I kind of knew
about him even earlier. You know, he's originally from Cincinnati
and some are Cincinnati guys knew him, and then he
moved to Georgia. But he is a very talented young man.
And uh as as he went as chip went down,

(26:00):
it that's another reason why I say a red shirt
freshman was thrust into you know, playing more and you know,
we we found a gym and him, I think he's
he's just scratching the surface. He's a really good kid. Uh,
he's still learning, but he one thing he can do,
he can run that football and he's very he's stronger
than what you think.

Speaker 3 (26:19):
What we notice just watching it from the press box
is how hard he hits the hole.

Speaker 6 (26:24):
Yes, he has a really good burst, probably has the
fastest burst of anywhere running backs. And that's the one
thing I think I told you a while back when
I said he kind of reminded me of Boom Whims
a little bit how he hits the hole. But what
I'm more impressed with him is how strong his balance is.
He's really strong at low balance, and he has speed
and uh he can catch on the backfield. He's kind

(26:45):
of what you want the SEC running back. And he's
only a red shirt freshman, so he's gonna get better
and better and uh, you know, I can't wait to
see him just keep.

Speaker 3 (26:53):
Growing and growing. How's Chip recovery?

Speaker 6 (26:56):
Chip is fine? Chip is you know he's out there today.
You know he still you know, I don't know if
you know what the actually what.

Speaker 2 (27:04):
We're going to do.

Speaker 6 (27:05):
You know, he ain't been cleared all the way, so yeah,
but he's you know, Chip has been really good for
the younger guys just being in a room and you know,
being a mentor to.

Speaker 3 (27:14):
Know if you have a question for coach merrow Send,
it in at UK Sports networker on the Kentucky Football
Facebook page, or give us a call on the Clark's
Pumping Shop phone line. You have a couple of key
guys on the offensive side that hit were hit with
injuries in the Tennessee game, so we don't get no
their status. If one, if Brock and or Baryon can't go,

(27:37):
then some young guys would get a longer look. Let's
start with one of them who we have seen in
more extended action, and that's Gavin Wimset, coming in from Rutgers,
the former Owensboro High school star. And I'm sure you
were working with him a lot coming out of Owensboro.
So how has he grown in a time he's been

(27:57):
with you here at Kentucky.

Speaker 6 (27:59):
He really has, I thought Bush really and Mark Perry
really doing a good job with him. He's excuse me,
he's uh been when he's been thrown in there. He
actually you know, I know he threw the one interception,
but people don't realize. Remember he drove us back down
and put us in a position to be a position
to win the game. So you can't under You cannot

(28:19):
undertake when you say a guy played twenty two games started,
twenty two games. He has game experience, and he's a big, big,
big kid man. He's about six three, six four and
two twenty five two thirty. I just like where he's at,
and uh, he's been a good addition, and I just think, uh,
you know, when he's in there, he really really, uh

(28:40):
you know, makes our offense go, you know, whatever Bush
want to do with that, like whether it's him running
the ball or him just open up the offense and
let him go. He's a good young man and he's
uh really glad to be back home. And so I
really love that kid being back here.

Speaker 3 (28:54):
You've got really promising young one in the pipeline at
that quarterback position, in a true freshman cutter bowlie who
we saw a glimpse of in the game at Florida.
You see him each day in practice working putting on
the offensive side of the field. So what are you
seeing in terms of his growth?

Speaker 6 (29:13):
You know, he was a very highly recruited young man
and you know, some people say five star. He had
every offer in the country. What you see with him,
he has the height, he's about six five, and his
arm is he has an elite arm and he's a
young man that really fits in well with his teammate,
says what you want as a quarterback, He's he's gonna

(29:33):
he has leadership capability. But I like Cutter because man,
he just fits in and he's driven. He comes from
a very athletic family. And I was watching him to
day in practice and he threw an out route and
it was just on the dime, and I'm just like, Wow,
this kid, his feature is really gonna be good. But
the future maybe now. He's playing a little bit now,
and I know we planned on playing I'm I know

(29:54):
Coach Stuts was saying we were gonna play him in
his game. And I'm a sighted because I told Tim
Couch I seen him Saturday. I said, man, Cutter kind
of reminds me of a young you the way you
throw the ball. And I really believe this young man
really has a bright future.

Speaker 3 (30:10):
When you guys are looking at a young quarterback and
you've got others coming in the recruiting pipeline, what are
the things that are on the checklist? I mean, you
mentioned his arm, but Cutter's arm strength in particular, but
there's that. What else is there? And kind of is
there one or two things that are right at the
top of the list for every quarterback.

Speaker 6 (30:29):
You gotta have leadership, and you gotta have moxie. You
gotta have that dog mentality as a quarterback. You know,
I look at Baker Mayfield even when he was at Oklahoma,
and you know, Jay's on our staff in Javis with
him in Oklahoma. He just has that that dog mentality.
And that's what I see like in Cutter. Like Cutter really,
I just think he has that moxie and what you

(30:50):
call it.

Speaker 2 (30:50):
He has that it.

Speaker 6 (30:51):
You know, he rallies a lot of a lot of
players different nationalities. They really really want to play for him,
and he really he has it, and I like again,
I can't wait to see it unleashed and let him
you know, when you actually gonna take the reins.

Speaker 3 (31:08):
Join Christy Thomas, Jeremy Jarman, and Logan Stenberg for our

and the official UK Athletics app. We'll get back to
Coach Merrow in just a bit, but we're gonna spend
this next segment visiting with a young man who has

(35:02):
been a part of the Kentucky football team for several
years now and also has just been honored by Big
Brothers Big Sisters of the Bluegrass with their Ambassador Award
and it's going to be announced or recognized on Saturday
at the game. But Trayvon Ripka, you actually got the

(35:23):
award at a ceremony recently and what did that mean
to you.

Speaker 25 (35:27):
It just meant a lot just knowing that my work
that I've done with big brothers big sisters have kind
of just started a partnership with UK Athletics from here
on down the road.

Speaker 2 (35:38):
That just kind of does a lot for me.

Speaker 3 (35:41):
It's a wonderful organization helping guys like yourself, mentor young
people that maybe don't have a father figure or mother
figure in their life. What do you get from it?

Speaker 25 (35:55):
Joy, happiness, just seeing the long term effect of the
kids that you spend a little bit of time with,
you know, just the impact you made on the child's
life from maybe the thirty minutes you spend with them
more you know what I mean?

Speaker 3 (36:09):
Yeah, No, I mean it literally is a gift for
you that keeps on giving for your life. Why is
that particular organization close to your heart?

Speaker 25 (36:20):
I intern with them, Well, my sister, she had a
big sister growing up, and there wasn't a lot of mentors,
male mentors, and I never got one, so that I've
always had a little connection there, but just me and Chris.
I intern for Chris for one of my classes, and
I just kind of fell in love with it.

Speaker 3 (36:40):
You grew up in your grandparents' home, right, you had
that influence in your life, but for kids that don't
have that, what you do is really significant and it well,
not obviously you, but all the people that are volunteering.
It's a wonderful program to be a part of. What

(37:02):
is it? What would you say to people who are
considering looking for something to get involved with. Why is
Big Brothers Big Sisters a good way to.

Speaker 25 (37:10):
Go because it's not a lot of time commitment. It's
just one year for one hour once a week. So
you go through the matching process with a you just
get like background tricks, you do everything you need to
do and then you get started with the match process
and then after that you just go in for your year.
You meet them for you meet your little for one

(37:30):
week for an hour.

Speaker 3 (37:32):
So you're in your senior year with a football team,
which we'll get to the football part in a minute.
But is this something that you want to stay involved
with after your days here at UK or something similar?

Speaker 25 (37:44):
Yeah, sir, this has always been like a plan B
helping kids, mentor and just I just want to give
back change the world.

Speaker 2 (37:50):
One day.

Speaker 3 (37:51):
Let's talk a little bit about your career here at UK.
One game that comes to my mind is the Citrus
Bowl when over Iowa and you came up big in
that game, making some key plays for you know, collectively
a defense that was hit pretty hard with injuries and
COVID issues that for that game.

Speaker 2 (38:11):
Yes, sir, that was big. That was big.

Speaker 25 (38:13):
That was a big time moment for me. Just my
number got called. Just got to step up. It's been great.

Speaker 3 (38:19):
This past game down at Tennessee a week ago Saturday
had to be special for you going up against those
guys in orange because you're from Dixon, Tennessee over in
your Nashville.

Speaker 25 (38:28):
Yes, sir, that's just a big time rivalry to me,
beyond the Kentucky Tennessee just being a Tennessee kid not
going there, just the tension and everything. I just I
love the rivalry.

Speaker 3 (38:40):
You've been a part of a very successful run here
for this football program, gone to bowl games. Still an
opportunity to keep that streak alive. So what are you
guys doing to try to do what a lot of
people don't think you can do right now is get
to neck, get to that bowl streak and keep it going.

Speaker 25 (38:58):
Just focusing hone in on the stretch. Coach came in
today just talking about the last stretch, how important it is.
People the home stretch. Some people can get comfortable, but
we can't. We got to keep our foot on the
gas and just show the world what type of football
team we really are.

Speaker 3 (39:13):
What do you remember? What do you think you're gonna
remember most or longest about your time here as a Wildcat?

Speaker 2 (39:21):
The Florida rush in the field. Oh really after the game?

Speaker 3 (39:24):
Yeah, it's those kind of moments are are special when
you're you know, trying to build something like you guys
have been able to do here. What is it that
you will do you think remember most fondly off the
field as far as you know, with your teammates or
in school or anything like that.

Speaker 25 (39:46):
Just a brotherhood, just coming in, just coming in with
the guys I came in with. Just being as close
knit as we are my D line, for sure, that's
just gonna be a tough pill to swallow. Leaving just
because how close we are in that room is big
for us.

Speaker 3 (40:04):
It was interesting to hear Coach White after the Tennessee
game talk about being in the meeting room with you
guys as a defense, not just the D line position group,
but just the whole defense, and he talked at length
about how proud he was of the effort you guys
gave because you know THEYD Derek Jackson, you're leading tacklers out,
JJ Weavers out, the leader in sacks, Maxwell Harston, your

(40:25):
all SECU quarnerback is out. DJ Waller's out at cornerback.
And there were other guys who were dinged up even
if they were out there, or young guys who hadn't
played much. And he talked about, you know, the discussions
you guys had as a defense collectively, and clearly you
put some of those that discussion into action on the
field to play really very well down there at Tennessee

(40:47):
in a tough circumstance.

Speaker 25 (40:48):
Yes, Sir, Coach White, just he always we have a
good understanding across the defense, just how we go about things,
our attitude, our toughness, the way we attack things.

Speaker 2 (41:00):
Just we have a good man set in there.

Speaker 3 (41:02):
Travon, I appreciate you stopping by. Congratulations on the Ambassador award.
Thank you obviously very well deserved. And if you're coming
to the game Saturday, you'll see him recognized. He'll be
a little busy, so but they'll make the announcement during
the game. So Trayvon Ripko, thank you so much, so
thank you. We're going to get to a break. As
we head there, let me remind you that you can
watch BBN Tonight to stay up on the Cats. It's

Speaker 3 (43:55):
Vince Marrow's here with us tonight. The associate head coach
Rooting coordinator tight ends Coach NFL liaison And when you
go through the recruiting process, you are obviously an integral
part of that. You get to know these guys very well.
And even you were telling me you were a little
surprised that you were at the ceremony for Trayvon to
receive the award last week and you didn't even know

(44:17):
all of the all over the backstory there.

Speaker 6 (44:19):
No, I mean, tray Von is really I think a
lot of student athletes should look at his story. You know,
you know he was raised by his grandparents, and we
recruited him, came down the battle between US and Tennessee.
Then he comes here, and I don't think Trey might
be saying this because I think this can really help
other young student athletes. You know, he has some academic
problems a little bit and it was very you know,

(44:42):
it could have been bad, and he I know Stu
and Brad and a lot of us had to talk
with him and he changedes. What did a straight three eighty?
And well now he's graduating from college. He's been a
three year starter for him. NFL people are acting about him.
So I think his story is just really just will
continue to be a role model to people.

Speaker 3 (45:02):
Tis the season to give and receive. For every one
hundred dollars that you spend in Malone's gift cards this
holiday season, you get a twenty dollars bonus. Gift cards
are available in store or online. Go to Bluegrass Hospitality
dot com. Let's go to the Clark's Pumping Shop. Phone line,
Jeff down in Tennessee. You have a question for us?

Speaker 19 (45:20):
Yeah, I just wanted to say coach to Morrow. I
wanted to wish you good luck against Murray State Saturday.
And I know I know it's going to struggle this season,
but how you get some more kids like to Ron
Risker from Tennessee's Dixon County High School, Dixon, Tennessee. I
hope you get some more like it. Dad, Ever, you
got plenty of down here for the pig and so

(45:40):
just come down ere any time you want something, and
well will a couple of blis that you have something.
But he's a good ball player, and I hope you
can get some more at Tell Steves he's my football coach,
and tell he's size leave or whatever rapids. He can
do whatever he wants do with that football program. I'm
not gonna watch it. Anything you all do, y'all been successful,
keep it going, and Toll you keep doing what you do.

(46:02):
And now I want to tell you the bottyball team
sweep them all, get another SEC championship eight in the row.
Have a good week, guys. And if we talk to
you so Tony Neely, hello, do you do have a
good guys?

Speaker 3 (46:14):
Thank you? Jeff volleyball team is sweeping them all right.

Speaker 6 (46:16):
Now, yes, yes, well Jeff, I really appreciate that. And
if we could get a lot like Tray, I mean
we would take him. And uh, you know, as for
coach Stoops, you know he's working and you know, I
just say this for me. This ain't coming from him.
I mean we've been with nine straight Bowl games. Uh,
still got a chance to go to ten.

Speaker 21 (46:36):
Uh.

Speaker 6 (46:36):
We you know, we ain't gonna take a back seat
to say, hey, if anybody you know complain about what
they complaining about, we'd be grown in. But uh, I
really really appreciate your support. And you know, just I
like your voice number one, so I can use you
on recruiting. So yes, we'll be down to Tennessee and
hope I can meet you when we come down here.

Speaker 3 (46:54):
Thank you. Jeff from Larry at UK Sports Network on
social media, ask coach Merrill how recruiting is going in
the state of Georgia.

Speaker 6 (47:02):
Recruiting is going well. I know we some numbers we're
I think maybe rivals were like seventeen or eighteen on three.
We like twenty and then I think we twenty one
on two four seven, So you know, it's going really well.
There's always good players in Georgia. We got a lot
of guys that played here that's in the NFL, and
you know we're gonna keep going there. We're gonna keep
going to Tennessee. We gonna keep going to stay in Kentucky.

(47:24):
Were gonna go to Ohio, We're gonna go to Michigan,
We're gonna go all over.

Speaker 3 (47:28):
Is it changed it? I mean, for instance, Texas, A
and m is already in the league, but adding Texas
to the league, adding Oklahoma, does that open up some
new recruiting territory for you having more interest?

Speaker 2 (47:38):
Maybe?

Speaker 6 (47:39):
Well, I think it's probably opening the spanning afore like
Oklahoma and Texas, because it used to be Florida, you
know what was getting over recruited. Now Georgia is a
very strong state. You know, Ohio, it's one of the
top five states that produced high school college players and
NFL players. So you can go, I can say this,
it's the best conference in the country if you want

(48:01):
to come here. That's why you look and you see
we have ten to eleven to every other day scouts
at our practice because they know it's a lot of
talent here. They know it's a lot of talent in
this league.

Speaker 3 (48:11):
It is amazing what is happening this year in the SEC.
Just if you're just as a football fan, if you're
tracking the college football playoff rankings each week, and what
that looks like. I mean, I saw one story. There
is a scenario where you could end up with an
eight way tie for first place in the SEC this year.
So there's gonna be you know, more than one good

(48:33):
team left out of the playoff.

Speaker 4 (48:35):
Bro.

Speaker 6 (48:35):
Yeah, SEC is like the NFL. It's starting to get
parody with the transfer portal. You know, guys that were like,
you know, they had strong second teams. Now them guys
are going in the portal. So when you look at it,
I mean, I can say it could be the other way.
We could have beat Georgia, we could have beat Tennessee,
we could have beat Auburn just one possession games. So

(48:57):
it's parody. But to me, that's how you wanted to be.
I think college football is more. This is probably the
most college football season where there are a lot of
upsets and people are like, wow, they thought this team
will win. And you look at Indiana, you know, from
where they are now they're nine or zero and ten
and oh, So I think I just think college football
is parody anyway.

Speaker 3 (49:16):
And uh, from a recruiting standpoint, it's not just high
school seniors you're recruiting anymore. Sometimes it's you know, guys
in the portal once they go in. You guys, I think,
have always done a great job of maintaining relationships even
if you don't land a guy. Wandale Robinson is a
great example of this, Davin wimsit where you keep the
connection there and no bridges are burned for maybe getting

(49:39):
somebody back the second time you recruit them.

Speaker 2 (49:41):
Right.

Speaker 6 (49:41):
I just think it's funny. I was talking to another
coach and another college coach, and I was saying, Hey,
the portal works when you hit on the right guys.
And my my friend belief is, if you're gonna take
a kid out of the portal, you better have some
kind of information on them, because you can just come
in blind bringing the kid in and it can be
a bad fit. So I think our coaches have had

(50:03):
a lot of relationship with guys that we go recruiting
a portal. If not, then I think we got to
do some real digging to say, hey, who is this
young man we're gonna bring in?

Speaker 3 (50:11):
Got like the NFL does with drafts.

Speaker 6 (50:12):
Got to I mean it's like background checks. Now you're
gonna pay guys, you gotta do background checks. And I
just think we hit pretty good on the first portal
with Wandale and Will and you know a lot of
the other guys. It's just like I say again, the
high school recruiting is the NFL draft, and the portal
is like the unrestricted free agency where you plug in holes.

Some A couple of fans have asked about when Coach
Pope's show will start. The first one is going to
be November twenty fifth. That'll be what two weeks of

(54:32):
a doubleheader. Always somewhere around Thanksgiving is when we start
to start the basketball shows too, and there's a couple
of weeks where we have a football and then basketball together.
So that'll be November twenty fifth, the first one of those.
And you're a big basketball fan. I see you at
the games pretty often. What do you think about tomorrow night?

Speaker 6 (54:50):
I'm telling you I watched two games now and it
seemed like he assembled a pretty good team that's older,
that's plays together. They play good deep as they move
the ball. So I'm a sight I think. I think
it's going to be a game and I would not
be surprised if we win this game. I think he
can go seven to eight deep, and I really like
the chemistry they have and they seem like they're happy,

(55:12):
and I can tell you what, they can drop some
plays to get some buckets too, So I'm very excited
about this game tomorrow.

Speaker 3 (55:17):
Yeah, the way they moved the ball. I remember when
I watched him in the in the summer. That was
the thing that stood out to me earlier was how
little dribbling there was, how much ball movement there was.

Speaker 6 (55:28):
I'll tell you it was funny. I didn't even know
who Pope was. And I was up one night watching
a basketball game last year and it was I think
it was a Baylor and BYU and they won, and
then they say this guy was a former UK basketball player.
I was like, Wow, this guy can coach. And after
watching him out in person and just see how he
just jailed with his players, and I watched him and

(55:50):
you know, his family. It's just a really really tight circle,
and I'm really pulling for him, and I think they
gonna really do some good things.

Speaker 3 (55:56):
Yeah about that, Yeah, you just didn't know you were
watching the next Tucky coach at the time. No, I
didn't speaking of the word next. One of the next
UH stars in the wide receiver room is a guy
that just recently came back to your team hardly Gilmore.

Speaker 2 (56:12):
Uh.

Speaker 3 (56:12):
He was doing really well in training camp and then
I think what broke a collar bone and now just
recently got back. At his first catch a couple of
weeks ago, he's, Uh, there's a lot of upside.

Speaker 6 (56:23):
There a lot of upside and and you know what,
people don't realize Hartley should be coming in this year.

Speaker 2 (56:29):
He reclassic.

Speaker 3 (56:30):
Yeah, he's one of the youngest players in the country.

Speaker 6 (56:32):
Young guy, and he's very talented and uh, he's to me,
I think this kid upside is huge. He's going to
be a big time player.

Speaker 2 (56:39):
Uh.

Speaker 6 (56:40):
He's His catch radius when you throw it to him
is pretty good and he seems to have no fear
And I just think the kill Schwartz is really doing
a good job with him, and I think this is
gonna be a guy that I would not be surprised
at be like SEC or SEC and stuff like that,
if he just keep progressing and doing what I do,
because he has a lot of talent. He has a
lot of talent.

Speaker 3 (56:59):
Because coming up on the inside the final minute Murray
State this week one thirty kickoff and obviously, uh, you
guys have to say in the moment with just getting
I mean, it would be so great to get back
on the winning track.

Speaker 6 (57:14):
Yeah, at the time, I know one thing, our whole
building feels pretty good that we haven't had I think
five straight night games, So we're very excited that we play,
you know, in the daytime. And you know, we don't
look past no opponent. You know, I remember the Miracle Knights.
He said, Hey, we're not good enough to look past anybody.
And I'm just saying we we just need to focus
on Murray State and then you take care of what

(57:34):
we need to do with them, and then look tow
the next game after that. But Murray State is on
our mind, and uh, you know, to our fans, I
just hope they want to see, like the last time
I was on here was that we will play hard
and we're gonna play and we played a lot a
lot of guys that were out.

Speaker 2 (57:48):
I think we're gonna put out.
