Welcome into the show, as we talk Kentucky Football with
you until the top of the next hour, and then
it'll be Clark's Pump and Shot BBN Radio with Darren
Hendrick on many of these same stations. We welcome in
the coach Mark Stoops after a Game one victory over
Southern Miss and now it's conference play this week for
the Wildcats against South Carolina. We'll get to that in

(05:39):
a bit, Mark, but let's start with by this time,
you've had a look at extensive look at the tape.
So anything that you saw on tape that was different
from what you talked about in real time early Sunday morning, I.

Speaker 10 (05:53):
Mean not much, Tom about you know what I thought.
I mean, there's always you know, sometimes you think you
played really good and you look at the tape and
it's not so good, and vice versa. Sometimes you're just
a few plays off. But you know, yeah, first of all,

(06:14):
there wasn't as many plays as normal. You know, defensively,
I think thirty two plays, so certainly not a lot
of plays, which is what we want defensively and offensively.
I really feel like we did some good that both
sides did some really good things, and we were really
getting in rhythm. I guess that's the only negative. You know,
you feel like through that second quarter and even to

(06:35):
start the third, we're really getting in a good groove
and moving the ball, And that's the only downside. To
build off the positive things you were doing, and also
get some young players in there, get them some work.

Speaker 6 (06:48):
Yeah. For instance, those two young running backs got a
few carries. I'm sure you would have liked to have
given them more. Yeah, you know, maybe Gavin gets a
few snaps at quarterbacks, some offensive linemen probably you would
have liked to.

Speaker 10 (07:00):
No question, There's a lot of guys. And that's what
I told the players afterwards. I'm like that that's the
only downside. I think the players, you know, we're just
like fans, just like everybody. I mean, it's no fun
going out there warming up and hold, warming up, hold,
and so it was a long day for them.

Speaker 8 (07:19):
You know.

Speaker 10 (07:19):
It's hard for us to sit around and wait for
a seven thirty kick anyway, let alone a ten o'clock kick,
you know, so and then have it delayed. So that's
what I told them, though it was that I appreciated
the way they handled it. I think they were, you know,
good with calling it. But I did feel bad for

(07:39):
the players that would have gotten reps and that were
ready to go in and get some playing time because
they've worked really hard through camp and deserve that opportunity.
So I do feel for them, But there's gonna be
many other chances throughout this season. We just got to
go continue to work hard and get better, and you know,
hopefully they'll get more chain answers.

Speaker 6 (08:02):
Offensively is where there were there were more I guess
question marks coming in on that side of the ball.
You had a quarterback making his first college start, you
had a couple of UH transfers starting on the right
side of the offensive line. You had you know, the
running backs, and a lot of experience there, et cetera.
How did all of that look On the offensive side,

(08:22):
I thought it looked.

Speaker 10 (08:24):
Good. Definitely room for improvement finishing and sustaining blocks, better
position movement, you know, but for the most part, pretty clean.
I don't think any pre snap penalties. I don't think
we had a hold with the old line. Maybe on
the perimeter we did well.

Speaker 6 (08:45):
It was on the receiver. That one on the receiver
and it was indane and it was a tough play.
The guy bounced it out and he engaged on.

Speaker 10 (08:51):
It was fighting them really hard. He just kind of
had them hoped.

Speaker 6 (08:54):
He should have just happened sometimes to tackles too.

Speaker 10 (08:56):
Yes, yeah, it does, but but no, I thought the
old line played. You know, it was a good starting point.
We need to play better. But I liked some of
the things I saw.

Speaker 6 (09:10):
What about on the defensive side.

Speaker 10 (09:12):
Pretty solid, solid upfront. Anytime they rush for five yards,
that's that's pretty good, and it's what we kind of
expected coming into it. In that game. I felt like, upfront,
you know, we certainly can be disruptive. We need to
continue to do that. Figured they would mix it up
like they did and try everybody's going to try to

(09:34):
get the ball on the perimeter a little bit, and
we got to continue to do that. You know, they
really did only negative on the defensive side of those
third downs, and that was a problem a year ago.
We got to continue to work on that. We got
to continue to improve and and just get better at
some third downs.

Speaker 6 (09:51):
How about the cornerbacks, several of them opposite Maxwell Harston,
you know, you've got to proven performer there. How did
it look on the other.

Speaker 10 (09:58):
Side, JQ has has got a chance. We've got to
continue to work him along with Jansen Dunn. Both of
those guys, you know, have a chance. We gotta They
just need more reps. They didn't need more playing time.
Hopefully they'll gain confidence as they get more more playing time.

Speaker 6 (10:18):
And DJ Wallers just had trouble staying healthy.

Speaker 10 (10:20):
Yeah, I just you know, he's had a he's had
a nagging injury that that he just hasn't been able
to practice since it. And so you know, hopefully we'll
get that fixed and get him out there and get them,
get them healthy and get them playing.

Speaker 6 (10:33):
We'll continue our chat with coach Stoops. We'll get some
of your questions coming up as well. It's the UK
Healthcare Mark Stoops Show on the UK Sports Network.

Saturday's Kentucky South Carolina game is presented by Appalachian Regional
Healthcare More for Appalancha, we are chatting with coach Mark's
stoop says the Cats get set to take on South
Carolina on Saturday, Mark, what do you know at this
point about the game Cocks of one game and then
seeing them late last season obviously.

Speaker 10 (14:12):
Yeah, you know, just like a year ago, they really
started playing some really good defense, you know, the latter part,
second part of last year, and you know a lot
of last year, and and they started off the same
way this year. They really were very disruptive upfront. They
have some premiere guys on the edge that can present

(14:33):
some real problems. Their interior guys play extremely hard as well,
very physical. You know, they got some linebackers that are disruptive,
and good guys in the secondary. So really at all
three levels, I think defensively very good. I think much
like us, they're trying to continue to gel, you know
with the offensive line. It's our teams the very same way.

(14:56):
And you saw a lot of signs where they looked
very good on Saturday. You know, their new quarterback is
a big, strong guy that got all the throws and
can run and pass, and so, you know, a good
football team, typical SEC team. We just got to go
play well.

Speaker 6 (15:15):
I was doing some reading on Brock preparing for the
game this past Saturday, and one of the stories or
scouting reports I read on him coming out of high
school talked about two things in particular that he excelled
at off schedule plays or with the play can break
down and then throwing on the move. And it sounds
like with what you're going to see Saturday from South
Carolina's D line, those skills will come in handy.

Speaker 10 (15:35):
Yes, definitely. I thought he did a very good job Saturday.
When people ask me, it may have been you or
some others just said how how did he play? And really,
he played a lot like I thought he would. You know,
I thought, you know, I felt like, you know, through
everything that I've watched that he had a really good feel.
And that's hard to coach. You know, when the pull

(15:58):
the ball down and run and you know when to
put your shoulder down, when the slide, when the when
the to to you know, scramble to buy time to
throw it. He did that and then uh, and then
also just throwing in rhythm, throwing, throwing on time and
going through his progressions. You know, you've heard me say

(16:19):
it probably you know, forty times between last spring and
all of our preseason talking and you know, leading up
to it and everything that that I had a lot
of confidence in Brock. I just felt like, he's a guy,
he's the son of a coach. He was coached well
at Georgia, He's coached well here. I think coach Bush
Hampden has done a remarkable job with him. You know,

(16:41):
just the meetings I sit in and listened to to
the quarterback meetings and listened to him, uh, you know,
and and he did what coach coaches him to do.
He's like, Brock, you're gonna have to make two or
three plays, like I'm talking third down only right, Like
you know, a couple of times you're gonna have to
pull it down to Nick tough yards. You know, just
your instincts have to take over and you're going to
have to scramble throw the ball, and then you throw

(17:03):
in rhythm. You know, throw what you see. You know,
play just play play the plays and you know, he
did that, and as you and I were talking, Oh,
I think it was postgame. But you know what I
liked when I looked at the halftime stats was that
we had sixteen first downs. You know, explosive plays. Yes,
you absolutely have to have explosive plays, but but also

(17:24):
I think, you know, what I wanted was a quicker
tempo and more opportunities. I feel like if you string
together a bunch of plays and drives and getting first downs,
then you're going to create some plays. You know, one
thing I hate answering after every game is why didn't
sow and so cautch it? Or why didn't sow and
so touch it? Because we didn't have enough plays. That's
why we didn't. And that's on us. That's not on

(17:47):
any any one particular person or one coordinate or anything
like that. It's on us to get first downs. If
you get first downs, more people are going to get touches.

Speaker 6 (17:56):
Let's get to a call before our next break will
start in Phoenix airs. Oh we lost our Phoenix caller, Steve,
call us back, Let's go to Ope. Yeah. Correct, that
was just a note about what he was going to
ask about. So well, just have one caller and he
dropped off. So Steve call us back. Let me go
to one from off the social media feed at UK

(18:16):
Sports Network on Twitter or x at Kentucky Red Leg
Red Leg. What's your thought on the running backs and
their play in Week one?

Speaker 10 (18:25):
Yeah, I was impressed with the running backs. I thought
they did a very good job. Once again, I think,
you know, very they played about like I had talked
about him, you know, I said, we have a ton
of confidence in Demi. I thought Demi showed that. He
showed his versatility, He's durable, he's a true back, he's
you know, a year ago we were playing at two

(18:47):
different positions just to try to utilize his skills. This
year just honing in on running back only we need that,
and he was very effective.

Speaker 3 (18:56):
You know.

Speaker 10 (18:56):
Peterson, I think, you know, showed the physicality, also showed
the jews. He could ron. You know, he's got a
little top end, a little more than you think, good vision,
you know. And then Jamerion Wilcox is tough, you know,
he and he's got some he's got some things that
we still haven't seen, you know, but when we get
him in some space, I think you're gonna see, you know,
you're gonna like what you see. I think he has,

(19:19):
Uh he has some top end speed, he has some
elusiveness and uh, you know, really excited about it to
see the three of them, you know, continue to grow.

Speaker 6 (19:27):
You mentioned in our pregame chat before Saturday too that uh,
Demi was really pushing Chip hard for that number one
spot at running back, so it was kind of like
two number ones.

Speaker 10 (19:37):
No, there's no question. Everybody is thanks you know Chip,
and that no no disrespect to Chip at all. We
love Chip and he'll be back and he'll be a
really good player for us. But but but Demi and him,
we were right there. They were. They were both both
both starters in our eyes.

Speaker 6 (19:52):
People will wonder since we brought up Chip's name any
update on his timeline. Adapt there isn't gonna ask.

Speaker 10 (19:56):
You no no update. I have to give you know
starting this wee, I have to give you the sec
our new guidelines on injury updates. So I'll give you that,
but a bit no mystery. I can tell you that
now that he's out for this week.

Speaker 6 (20:10):
And you had those come out Tony elis he or two?
They'll start coming out on Wednesdays, right, Yeah, Availability reports
and they'll go up until I think what thirty minutes
before kickoff is when the last one will come out.

Welcome back into the UK Healthcare Mark Stoop Show, and
it is time for our Alumni haul. Question of the
week that comes from a fan and it is what
is the biggest improvement that you want to see in
Week two? Mark against South Carolina.

Speaker 10 (23:10):
I think more consistent on third down defense and we
were three of eight. It's not like we were horrible.
You know, we're efficient five times three times they converted,
and but two of them are third and long and
that's not that's not acceptable. We just got to continue
to clean that up. You know, look at it like

(23:32):
this last year, I want to say don't. You could
look it up Tom you know those stats, and maybe
Tony could look up our stats right now. But you know,
they scored on three possessions last year and defeated us,
you know what I mean. The other I want to
say seven other drives on those third downs, I don't
think they converted a third down, you know what I mean. So, yeah,

(23:53):
and so when you know, bottom line, the point I'm
making is last year, you know, is good. We played
pretty good for the majority of the game. However, when
we gave up a few third downs, they get some drives,
they scored and they beat us. So you know, we
we just we have to be a little more consistent
there and getting off the field when we can. And
I listen, some people are going to convert third downs.
It's just you know, when when it's when it's tilted

(24:15):
in our favor, you got to do that. You've got
to execute you know, third and medium, third and two,
third and three, third and five. You know, even you
know the mixed doowns. It's difficult. You know, it's it's tough.
You know, on defenses, you're not going to be you're
not going to have an extremely high success rate.

Speaker 6 (24:31):
What is the number that you guys you have guys
have a goal.

Speaker 10 (24:34):
It varies by down the distance, you know what I mean?
On what you want and what people do.

Speaker 6 (24:41):
Yeah, they have a lot of third on Yeah, yeah exactly.
Uh yusef thank you for the question. You can post
questions on X for coach Stoops each week or Twitter
if you still call it that at Alumni Hall and
it's your chance to win a twenty five dollars gift
card from Alumni Hall. So thank you very much for that.
Let's see, we've got time to get a call or

(25:02):
two in. We've got Steve back from Arizona. Question about kickers. Steve,
what do you have for us?

Speaker 20 (25:08):
Hey, thank you for taking my call. Coach, so appreciate
what you've done since you've been there. I've been a
UKFN since. Uh well now, but uh anywhere. My question
is you had I think it in the second quarter,
you had fourth down from there forty five? Did you

(25:32):
consider let the freshman Jacob Kowey I'm coway two yard
field go? Did you consider let him file sixty two
yard field go?

Speaker 10 (25:43):
Yeah? I would consider him and let him kick it.
I just wanted to play field position at that point
in time, and if I'm not mistaken, I think Tom
we held him the three and out and got the
ball right back and scored on.

Speaker 6 (25:57):
The next POSSI after the fake punt, I don't know, no, no, no,
but yes, I think you're right.

Speaker 10 (26:05):
But yes, I would, I would let. I would let
Colway attempt from I'm definitely comfortable at sixty with them.
I've watched them knock three in from sixty, which.

Speaker 6 (26:17):
Is I'm comfortable at sixty, which tells you you're considering
even more.

Speaker 10 (26:21):
Yeah. Yeah, Well, if the game's on the line, then
you have to. Yeah, you know, if if you have to,
you have to. But at that point in time, there's
no point in giving up field position. It's not like
a sixty two yard or is a gimme. And I
felt like we were playing good defense and I felt
like we could pin them, and I was very proud
because it was something that we needed to improve on,

(26:43):
is our sky punts in pinning them inside the ten.
And I think we pinned them at the eight, and
I'm almost positive we held them to three and I
got the ball back and got it in a good
field position.

Speaker 6 (26:56):
Yeah, I think you're right, is what we're talking about
special teams. There were a couple of plays I wanted
to let you talk a little bit about because they
all involved freshman. On the fake punt, you had Cam
Dooley making the tackle and Gerrod Smith made a key
playing containment. So that's two freshmen that weren't fooled. They
were ready. And then the opening kick, Uh, they're not
going to kick it to Barry, and so they kick

(27:16):
it up high and Willie Rodriguez, freshman tight end, fields
it and makes a great run.

Speaker 10 (27:20):
Yeah, they're exactly right. You know, Girod made a really
nice play containing it, and he, you know, Cam in
a nice play playing off of them, so they both
didn't contin you know, I mean he kind of Cam's
a little like that. He's a little wiry, you know
what I mean, Like he he's a ballplayer, and so
is Drawed. You know that. That's one of the guys
I'm bummed about, you know, because Drab was about to

(27:42):
go in and I want to see him play because
he's he's camp you know, and and you know Willie
Rodriguez was going to play a tight end as well.
You know, he's been very reliable and done a good job.
But you know, we worked that and you know, I
give you know, I give coach you know, coach Jay
a bunch of credit for that as well, because he

(28:03):
really we knew there was I mean, you know, it's
not like we we could almost guarantee they were not
going to kick the ball to to bury On. Yeah,
because we watched them and we didn't think their kicker
could get it out of the end zone and therefore
they don't think there was any way it was going
to bury On. So we really worked a lot of skies, squibs, pooches,

(28:26):
different things and worked on that. And the guy's got
a hat on a hat Willie got it, ran to
the open spot and you know what, they gave us
a bunch of juice, a bunch of energy.

Speaker 6 (28:34):
Oh yeah.

Speaker 10 (28:35):
So it was really good to see. And the youngsters
in general, even if they didn't pop up on offensive defense,
they played really hard on special teams. And we got
some guys that could run and with some length, and
so I'm excited about that freshman group.

Speaker 6 (28:48):

for Coach Stoops?

Speaker 10 (33:11):
How are we doing? Mark and Tom doing all right? Madison?
How about yourself? How do you?

Speaker 17 (33:15):
Uh?

Speaker 25 (33:15):
Well, I believe I've had that. I survived the rain,
but I believe I've had about enough of it.

Speaker 20 (33:21):
So I.

Speaker 25 (33:24):
Hear you, I got I got two things for you.
You were talking about uh being televised on ABC. What
do you what kind of perception do you think you
guys are going to get considering you used to be
on CBS and now you're on ABC, what kind of

(33:44):
perception do you think you'll get into. How do you
compare this South Carolina the previous South Carolina teams you've
faced over?

Speaker 10 (33:52):
Yeah, thanks Madison. Glad to hear your voice and you
got home safely. Saturdays. I know you you got season
tickets again, so we greatly appreciate you and all the fans.
I got to give a shout out cause we haven't
talked about that yet. I did in my press conference today,
and I did in post game, you know, on the

(34:13):
radio with you, you know Saturday, Tom, you and I did,
but shout out to our fans. Man, it was it
really was truly amazing. You know, There's been a lot
of moments and we feel their presence all the time,
but when we walked out of there after a two
hour delay, two hours and twenty minutes or whatever it was,
and they were all in their stands and going nuts,

(34:35):
it was something like that that gave us chills. You know,
I think the players really fed off that, and so
thank you. Amazing, so Thank you, Madison. I'm sure you
were there as well. I'm glad you got home safe,
you know, after a late night. As far as how
we're received with a different network or any network, you know,

(34:56):
hard for me to control. You know, we are who
we are, far from perfect, but we try to represent
ourselves the right way, to represent this great state and
do things the right way and play the game the
right way. And that's all I can do, and is
control us. I can't control any other network and in

(35:16):
how they receive us, and and and all that good
stuff in South Carolina, you know again, you know, a
typical SEC team, they have some some players that that
can that can disrupt the game and hurry and so
you know, you have to always be on high alert,

(35:37):
and you have to play good football.

Speaker 17 (35:40):
You know.

Speaker 10 (35:41):
We've had a lot of games with these guys, and
there's been a lot of close games, you know, and
so you know through the years, it's an evenly match
game and uh, you know, I imagine another tough game
here this week, you know. And so I can't control them.
I think they have good players, good coaches, and you know,

(36:02):
I got to control our team and our preparation, and
that's what I've harped onto our team today is let's
build on some of the good things we've done this
past week, Let's get some things corrected, Let's continue to
move forward and uh you know, and and build on
each each day and each week. But they certainly have
some guys you know, uh that that can disrupt the

(36:25):
game on in in all areas. Their special teams blocks
a lot of kicks. Their their offense is always has
a couple of dynamic guys and uh that could that
could make some explosive plays. And defensively in particular, they've
got some guys on the edges that are very disruptive
and in their whole defense, really they play hard and
they could create some turnovers.

Speaker 6 (36:46):
Madison, thank you. Here's something on social media we at
UK Sports Network on X from Sean and he's just
looking at us for your comments on a few observations
he made. He said, love the variations in tempo, Love
the sugar huddle, the running game. Thought the backs got
better throughout the game. Love the concepts that can come
off the jet motions with Barry on and even if

(37:08):
it only gained two or three yards on a particular play,
it sets up so much so your thoughts.

Speaker 10 (37:12):
Yeah, again, he's right. I mean I think, you know,
with us, you know, we do a lot of things
pre snap, and then we do a lot of things
with motions and a lot of that gives defenses a
lot to look at and it's hard to zero in
on us very quickly, so that's part of that. And
then we're shifting and motioning and and the perimeter run
game with Barry on the edge, it does set up

(37:34):
other things both off play action and in the running game.
And so with this, you know, with this game, I
think the tempo is a great observation. You heard me
talking about that all off season that you know, we
may be it's not like we're trying to go extremely
high all the time, but it is nice to mix
that in the sugar huddle is important because you get

(37:57):
to the line quick and you could build off that.

Speaker 26 (38:01):
You know.

Speaker 10 (38:01):
I think we hit one one run that we really
should have run that Jason. I thought that's one time
that the turf Monster got him a little bit on
that on the run near the goal line. Jason had
a good game, but I think that time again, you know, no,
I don't need to make an excuse for him, but
you're playing on that surface. Sometimes he just kind of
got caught up and I don't think he gained a

(38:22):
couple of yards, but I think he he easily could
have drugged some some guys in because of the way
we blocked it. They would have had to tackle him
from the side. I think he would have scored if
he had had his feet up underneath him. That was
off of sugar huddle. And then if I'm not mistaken,
the boot the boot we hit was was.

Speaker 6 (38:39):
Also of off a quick snap from kat Stand to Dingle.
I think that one was a touchdown, Yeah, from Katstan.
He wants to know about Alex Afari. Seemed like he
was all over the field. How was his play at linebacker?

Speaker 10 (38:54):
I was very pleased with Alex moving from outside to inside.
I thought he really showed up. There's many many things
that he needs to improve on, but will but I
thought he really showed up. I thought he the one
thing that we talked about moving him from like safety
to outside nicol medium what we call it and then
inside is now you're getting a very athletic guy in there,

(39:17):
and I thought he showed that. You know, I thought
Rayner showed you know some really quickness as well. And
then you know, you know, d Jack and Pop, you
know are steady guys and really good players. So I
thought all four guys that played inside played really well.

Speaker 10 (42:44):
I'll just continue to work, you know, continue to build
the depth. I like the five we have in there
right now, and we have a couple guys behind them
that we have some confidence in, but we need to
continue to recruit and develop.

Speaker 1 (42:58):
You know.

Speaker 10 (42:59):
It goes back to that. You know, again, I have
confidence in this group. I think they're going to get
better and better as the year goes on. I thought
they played much better in Game one than we did
a year ago, and hopefully you will continue to build
on that.

Speaker 6 (43:17):
Kentucky outscored it supp has outscored its opponents by at
least twenty four in the season opener for four straight
years now, first time that's been accomplished since nineteen fifty one.
And the win over a sudden they miss marked the
fourth straight season opener with at least thirty one points,
second time in school history that had happened going back
to nineteen seventy.

Speaker 10 (43:37):
You know, And that's something Tom that you know, me
and you and I in general very rarely talk about stats.
But let's be honest. People look at them, you know
what I mean. And as the year goes on, people
look at them, and when the game gets caught off
after two quarters and couple drive, if you're a defensive coach,
you're like, heck, yeah, okay, yeah, but it's gonna help
me if you're in. And then Bush doesn't care about that.

(44:00):
But I did feel bad in general because I think
we were really rolling. Yeah, and you know, and and
it doesn't there's no asterisks on there for him, you
know what I mean, they don't. I mean, don't pro
rate it on out if you double it up, he
had twenty four and a half, you know, he gets
forty eight exactly, you know, and you know, probably close
to five six hundred yards if we really want to

(44:22):
let it rip. But he doesn't get credit for that.

Speaker 6 (44:25):
Yes, So that one guy's happy. One guy's not as
happy when it comes to the stats. The shutout. Last
time that had happened at a home game to start
the season was nineteen ninety three against kent State. The
last time it happened anywhere was in two thousand and nine.
We Kentucky opened the season against Miami of Ohio at
the Bengals Stadium, which is now pay Corpse Stadium. Malons

(44:47):
and Drake's proud partners of UK Athletics visit their team
before or after games for a winning meal that's dine
in or for carry out. I wanted to ask you
about the new element in college football this year of
helmet communication into the helmet of the quarterback on offense
and one defensive player. I assume that's one of your

(45:07):
inside linebackers.

Speaker 10 (45:08):
That yeah, it is, it is, and uh that go. Yeah,
it went good. It's still not not perfect. You saw
me use a couple of timeouts. I was fully prepared,
you know, to to not get frustrated or panic, you know,
because we do a lot pre snap, you know, and
coach Hampden preaches that all the time that we have

(45:29):
to win the pre snap. We'd shift motion formation, you know,
we do a lot of things and then you know,
a lot of a lot of different moving pieces, I
should say, and so we have to be precise. We
got to make sure our personnel is right and then
and then get everything going. We burned, I want to say,
didn't like one in the first and one of the

(45:51):
set I think, you know, and that's okay. I mean
I was prepared with it. And obviously as we move
forward and we get to a game that one of
those timeouts, one of those possessions that you know it
could you know it could matter, but but it's it's
part of it. Outside of that, I thought we were
very efficient. You know, I thought things ran pretty smooth.

(46:12):
There were some there was some aggressive play calling that
that we hit some. There was some that we we missed,
you know, as far as we checked out of one
or two that I thought were there, we missed one
or two. But you know, we were just looking at
this Tony as gave it to me as you and
I were getting off air when I thought we were

(46:34):
getting in a groove. I mean, you know, the last
four positions we had we scored, we go field goal, touchdown, touchdown, touchdown,
and and that's when I really did think we were
starting to hum a little bit and getting a really
good groove.

Speaker 6 (46:47):
Question from Terry the there's an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty on
a play shortly before halftime. He says that that could
be costly in a closer game down the road. How
do you address stat with your team?

Speaker 10 (47:03):
We didn't, we didn't have it was sports one.

Speaker 6 (47:06):
Uh, it was almost it was maybe not gonna kick
out for something.

Speaker 10 (47:10):
Oh yes, yes, we did. First We we did, we did, Sportsman,
we did, we did, and and you you are correct,
And I could tell you this. I've harped on it
to no end because this first weekend we played so late,
we got a chance to watch a lot of ball Thursday, Friday, Saturday,
you know, And so I've harped on it with our team.
Heck I had to mention it to him fifteen times

(47:31):
before the game about playing very unselfish and not making
foolish mistakes because guys are so amped up, so ready
to go. And that was a freshman and it was
it was on kickoff and it was silly and it
was you know, and uh, you know, we got on them,
but we'll move on, you know. And and the other
penalty we got that was close was they are calling

(47:53):
roughing or targeting with quarterbacks much closer this year in
college football, and JJ got JJ. Yeah, he tried to
back to the ball down and Hecky even tried to
hold the quarterback up. But they're going to call that
closer than they ever have in college And you know,
part of that is you and I and other people.
We've discussed it, and you know, on air, and you know,

(48:14):
We've been in here before when our quarterbacks are getting
really beat up. So we just got to be conscientious
about that. Coach it once again. It's something that I
went over just last week with our team, showed them
the clips that I got from the league, and uh
really tried to put it in their head. And really,
if you you know, there were several plays where we

(48:34):
peeled off where guys were very smart, and that one
I think it wasn't intentional, let's put that way. It
was just unfortunate.

Speaker 6 (48:42):
That's right.

Speaker 10 (48:44):
Just got a little piece of.

Speaker 6 (48:44):
It from Tyler. What are your thoughts on heavy?

Speaker 10 (48:48):
However, can I say this too?

Speaker 6 (48:50):
Show you say whatever you want?

Speaker 3 (48:51):
There was.

Speaker 10 (48:53):
Our team showed great restraint. Two other times with them
Southern miss retaliated or gave us a late hit and
we didn't retaliate. That gave us a first down on
the two I want to say, which it would have
been third and two, and that's no giving, you know,
And so we got first and tent and scored and

(49:14):
and that was big. And I preached that all the time.
It takes a tougher guy, you know, to to walk
away from that, to to you know, to let them
get the fifteen yard penalty and so we did that
on the goal line and Barryon did it once on
the sideline that he didn't retaliate, didn't get a penalty.
He was really showed some maturity. And then the one
that really bothered me was with Trayvon ripk you know,

(49:35):
after the play was over, got you know, and and
I don't want to get into it and like accuse
you know, officials of not calling something or whatever. It
just it was after the whistle. There was a bunch
of stuff and Trayvon was furious and he got off
the field and he was on the bench and he
was losing it. But we were like, dude, that's that's growth. Yeah,

(49:58):
like you you did not retaliate, you did not get
the fifteen yard Pelly. We're on the bench and the
offense is about to go out there. But you know,
so we coach that up all the time, and I
thought our team did some really smart things as well.
We constantly talk about that stuff.

Bryant, call your Bradshaw, Ray, Kersey, Claiborne, Curry, Mummy, Morris, Brooks, Phillips. Oops,
here's an easier one. Can you name Kentucky's insurance company
since nineteen forty three? That's right, Kentucky Farm Bureau. For
eighty plus years, Farm Bureau has been helping Kentuckians come
out on top after storms and accidents. Kentucky Farm Bureau

question for Coach stoops.

Speaker 20 (54:03):
Hey.

Speaker 3 (54:04):
First of all Tom one of the great jobs you do.
I'm blind, but listening to the game, I don't think
I missed a thing.

Speaker 6 (54:11):
Man, Well, thank you. That is a wonderfully wonderful compliment.

Speaker 3 (54:16):
But I do I do see the bad calls against it.
I want you to know that.

Speaker 10 (54:22):
That's good.

Speaker 3 (54:25):
I'm a season ticket holder and been coming to the
UK games since Old Storefield. My father brought me to
Storefield before I lost my fight when I was ten
years old. And uh but I went to law school
UK and and loved the games then. And I just
appreciate Coach the consistency that you brought to our to

(54:46):
our team in the program. I mean, if you had
told me we would ever gotten to the point where
we're winning ten games, uh, two out of four years
or two out of five, whatever it was. And we're
competing with Clemson and the bowl game last year, and
by god, we should have won that game. I'm still
stick over that.

Speaker 10 (55:04):
I'm yep, I'll never let it go either, Judge.

Speaker 3 (55:09):
But I want to tell you that the I really
like this this new offensive coordinator. I hope you won't
let him get back to the slow, slow pace of
our offense. And I love the way he was mixing up.
And I believe this quarterback coach is going to this
quarterback coach Oops is going to be the real deal man.

(55:30):
You could just tell uh, Tom plays play call. Everybody
at the house was watching it on TV, and I
listened to my radio keep up with Tom's call. That
you could tell that that the guy knows how to
go to the football, knows where he's a coach's son, right, Coach.

Speaker 10 (55:44):
You're exactly right. Well, a couple of things, judge. First
of all, thank you so much for your support and
continuing to support us even though you can't see the game,
and you're blessed. You're right, you're blessed to listen to
Tom because he could put you right in the action
and you you still hear everything and the excitement going
on in the stadium. So thank you so much. Please

(56:06):
be my guest, come see us sometime, watch practice or
meet our team or anything I could do for you
to repay you. I would love to host you. So
thanks for your support, and yeah, do it, do it,
come on, you'd be my guest. And you know I
definitely coach Toops is the last one to put the
brains on anybody, I'm the one saying, go, go go.

(56:28):
When when when he threw three deep shots in a row,
you know, on Sunday when our staff meeting, when we're
back at work and we watched the film, we get
together and have a staff meeting, I was like, I
absolutely loved it, you know, and so and I like
the way he mixes up to tempo. As another caller
mentioned earlier, I think he's doing a really good job.
There's a lot to build on, there's a lot to correct,

(56:49):
and we need to play better this week as our
opponents ramp up. And uh, you know, it's going to
be a heck of a game, but it's gonna be fun.

Speaker 3 (56:58):
There's not a game on the schedule that we can't win, Okay,
And I want you to know that, and I know it,
and I want you We're gonna we got bigger and
better fish to fry. I was catching fish down at
Nolan Lake this weekend at my lake house, and we're
going to catch some those big fish and fri maybe
don in Austin. I got a feeling about the Austin.

Speaker 10 (57:18):
Well, I'm just going, well.

Speaker 2 (57:20):
I'm just going judge.

Speaker 6 (57:21):
I appreciate it.

Speaker 10 (57:22):
We got run judge, We're about to get cut off.
But h but I hear you. But I'm a one
game at a time, you know that. I got to
tell my players that, and it's the truth. One day
at a time. We had a good Monday. We need
a good Tuesday.

Speaker 6 (57:33):
Good luck Saturday.

Speaker 10 (57:34):
Thank you very much.
