steps moves in alongside then coach binge On. He always
has his rule with his baseball team that every you know,
celebrations or being a frustrated upset or whatever, it ends
at midnight. So I guess it's kind of the same
thing with about every sport in it.
Speaker 11 (05:59):
Yeah, about right, you know, midnight for us, Uh, maybe
on Sunday for him, they got to turn around quickly.
Speaker 4 (06:06):
They're going to play the next day. For us, it's
a week.
Speaker 11 (06:09):
And you know, we wait all year to play twelve opportunities,
you know, twelve guaranteed opportunities and and you know, so
they're they're big and that's what you know, we put
an awful lot into it to to go out there
and compete. And when you lay an egg like that.
It's very frustrating on a lot of people, and nobody
(06:30):
more so than in our building. But yeah, I think
you know, for us, you know, Saturday night and then
you know in the Sunday, it's.
Speaker 4 (06:38):
Uh, you know, we we have to move on quickly.
Speaker 11 (06:41):
We got to you know, first of all, we have
to go in there's a staff on Sunday and figure
out what the heck you know went.
Speaker 4 (06:47):
Went wrong and why?
Speaker 11 (06:49):
And uh there's always a lot of questions, a lot
of uh you know, uh second guessing you know too much,
too little?
Speaker 4 (06:57):
You know what what you know? What calls all that?
You know.
Speaker 11 (07:01):
I've talked about it a couple of times already, you know,
even you know, I told the players that you got
to own it. You know, you got to own your
you know, your mistakes and you know, and and that
you know, starts with me, Like I said, I told them,
you know, you know, going forward, you know, and early
in that game and the fourth that's the wrong decision.
You know, I got to trust our defense keep it
a one score game. And uh, you know that that
(07:23):
that's an important decision starting right there.
Speaker 4 (07:25):
I own that, and.
Speaker 11 (07:27):
Uh, but but yeah, we we have to get in
there and get it turned around quick and and flip
the script.
Speaker 4 (07:33):
You know, we we we get the players.
Speaker 11 (07:35):
In there on Monday, you know, watch the film and
and that's the big thing with them as well.
Speaker 4 (07:40):
Watch the film.
Speaker 2 (07:40):
Own it.
Speaker 4 (07:41):
Know you know why, you know we we made you know.
Speaker 11 (07:44):
Some critical mistakes, you know, uncharacteristically, you know, penalize so
many times. That's what's inexcusable and frustrating. And then you
know Smith's opportunities. There's a lot of good in there
that gets washed away, you know because uh it looks
so bad because the bad was so bad.
Speaker 2 (08:01):
There's one sequence I think at the third quarter I chatted,
I was watching the game back today, like at forty
five yards gained over three plays, all nullified by penalties. Yeah,
and then put it we were still very much in the.
Speaker 11 (08:12):
Game, yeah, and then pushed all the way back to
the inside the five on. You know what the sequences
that you're talking about, you know, so you know, very
very critical mistakes.
Speaker 2 (08:22):
You and people in your program talk a lot about
the phrase playing with an edge, and you know how
hard you guys expect to compete to set that standard.
So how do you get that to where you want
it to be off what you saw on Saturday.
Speaker 11 (08:38):
Well, you know, as much as we talk about that, Tom,
we talk about disciplined execution as well, and and we
didn't have that, you know, so one thing, you know,
immediately following the game, and you know, during the game,
it felt so you know, frustrating and to me, you know,
I challenged the team afterwards and again you know, putting
(08:59):
all of that send it together, but you know, to
me it you know, I thought immediately follow in the
game that that it was an issue with how hard
we played, and that that wasn't the case. You know,
our guys played hard defensively. There's I think eleven or
twelve negative yardage plays. I mean, the balls all over
the ground. We just can't get it.
Speaker 4 (09:16):
You know.
Speaker 11 (09:16):
Several times we had our opportunities and you know, but
then there was just critical mistakes. So it comes down
to execution, you know. So there's a million questions out there.
I'm ready to feel them. I'm ready to take my bullets,
you know, but you know, it comes down to execution.
We have you know, some you know, some issues that
we have to get protected. You know, certain ways. You know,
(09:39):
we knew going into the game. You and I sat
here right there last Monday and talked about them and
their edge pressure and their defensive ends. A couple of
guys that could create havoc. And they have some experienced,
really good players inside as well. So now you know
that's a defense that's coming along. I think everybody went
to sleep because you watched you know, South Carolina against ODU,
you know, and it looked like you know, jo hum
(10:00):
but but but they, you know, to their credit, you know,
they used that game and you know, came out with
the victory, but obviously got some things fixed.
Speaker 4 (10:11):
And with us, you know.
Speaker 11 (10:12):
We we just you know, we we we didn't, you know,
and we didn't improve between week one and week two.
You know, just go you can't just go out on
the field and play like like you can't roll the
ball out and think you're gonna go out there and
play well.
Speaker 4 (10:24):
And I did not see that coming.
Speaker 11 (10:25):
I told you that last week we talked, You and
I talked on after the game and yeah, after the game,
and didn't did not see that coming.
Speaker 4 (10:32):
I felt like we had a good week of preparation.
Speaker 2 (10:35):
I assume there are things no matter how much you
try to simulate in practice that you really don't learn
about your team until you put them under the stress
of a game with some outside competition. So after this,
do you look at it and think, okay, this is
there are things that we saw that we just need
(10:55):
to coach up and execute better. Or do you say, okay,
there's some things we're not ready to do right now,
We've got to do this differently.
Speaker 11 (11:01):
Well, you know, the first thing just about any coordinator,
you know, head coach, you know, always immediately after the game,
do you think about, you know, the mistakes and why
are we doing too much? You know, do we put
too much on these young men to handle our you
know and you know, or not or too little or
(11:23):
you know what I mean, not enough scheme, not enough
you know, plays to create positive energy and you know,
explosive plays and so on. So you know, I think
you know, for us, you know, we've you know, been
through some ups and downs. You look at defensively and
you know there's a bunch of things in there that
are very easily correctable. You know, there's so many good
(11:44):
I mean, there were so many negative yardage plays, like
I said, we had. I think the game was I'm
not sure if it was ten six at the time,
or maybe seventeen six, But I mean the balls on
the ground in our grasp two plays in a row,
you know, and we got to make one of those plays.
We got to you know, scoop it and score and
just basic fundamentally, if we'd got to our proper spots,
(12:07):
like after a guy gets chipped and things like that,
it probably falls right.
Speaker 4 (12:10):
In his lap, you know. So and then you know,
you look at some of.
Speaker 11 (12:13):
The other explosives that that they had in we're on defense,
and you know, as I told the team, about three
of them were complete fundamental issues that are you know
that that shouldn't happen to a veteran defense, you know that.
Speaker 4 (12:27):
And then you know, some of it, I think is
to your point.
Speaker 11 (12:30):
There's plays, there's new concepts that they see the same
stuff all the time from our offense, you know what
I mean. Then you play somebody new and you just
have to apply your rules. There's things that they're going
to see in every game that they have not seen before,
and we just have to be able to react to
it and have to be able to overcome it. And
you know that's on the defense side. On the offensive side,
(12:52):
you know they they had a lot to do with it.
To their credit, you know, they were very disruptive upfront,
and we had a hard time handling it with with
the old line. In the situation we're in right now now,
we got again stay patient. When I think it was
the third series when we got the ball and just
stayed with running straight downhill, I think we got to
(13:12):
stay to our game plan too, because that's what was
our game plan, was to do that, you know, and
not put the ball on the perimeter. I think in
Series two maybe you would know when we had a
nine yeard run and then we could put the ball
on the perimeter and lose eight and.
Speaker 4 (13:23):
Have to punt. You know that that was not in
our plan.
Speaker 11 (13:26):
That's on us, you know, And so there's enough of
that to go around where you know, we just got
to hone in on things. And I told the players
that too. You know, once we know the plan, you know,
we have to hone in on that and be very
very precise and execute it in all areas.
Speaker 4 (13:45):
That's coaches and players.
Speaker 2 (13:46):

Speaker 8 (17:12):
Ball game to Kentucky.
Speaker 2 (17:16):
So when that happened in nineteen ninety seven, Kentucky beat
Alabama for the first time in seventy five years. And
the guy who's through the pass joins us right now.
That is the deuce Tim Couch, who will be going
into the National Football Foundation College Football Hall of Fame
later this year. But he's gonna be honored at this
game at his alma mater on Saturday. And Tim, I
(17:37):
know this honor means a great deal to you. What
do you think about when you reflect on your time
as a Wildcat.
Speaker 16 (17:45):
Yeah, a lot of great memories, Tom, you know, just
you know, I really think about, you know, the great
coaches that I was fortunate enough to play for, and
Coach Mummy and Coach Leech and Chris Hatcher and Tony
Franklin and Sonny Dykes, all the guy that was all
the guys that were on that staff, just a tremendous staff.
And then obviously you know my teammates, you know, Craig
Yeast and Anthony White and great offensive line, all the
guys that I've played with. You know, none of this
(18:07):
is going to be possible, you know, for me to
achieve without great coaches and great, great teammates around me.
Speaker 2 (18:12):
Yeah, it's it's the ultimate team game football at any level.
But I know this is an individual honor, but it's
a recognition for all those guys you played.
Speaker 16 (18:22):
With too, right, Yeah, Yeah, I totally agree. You know,
I feel like I'm accepting the award on that team's behalf,
you know, because like you said, Tom, and there's the
ultimate team sport, and you know, without that offensive line
I had, and like I mentioned, the coaching staff we
had at the time, and putting me in a position,
you know, to go out and be in a system
that was a perfect fit for my skill set. You know,
(18:43):
everything just kind of fell into place for me, and
you know, just just very proud of what we were
able to accomplish in my you know, two years as
a starter there.
Speaker 2 (18:51):
Tim is going to be in the rest of the
class will be honored in Vegas in December. But the
National Football Foundation does this by going around to the
alma maters of the individual players and coaches, et cetera,
and recognizing them there in front of the home folks.
And so that'll be a nice moment for you coming
up on Saturday. And I think it'll be at the
(19:12):
end of the first quarter. I think there's gonna be
a plaque presented that UK will get to put on
display from this point forward. Now, Brock Vandergriff has to
go up against Kirby Smart's defense Saturday. But you had
to go up against Kirby Smart, right.
Speaker 16 (19:26):
Yeah, I did. I think actually threw an interception.
Speaker 1 (19:31):
Yeah.
Speaker 16 (19:31):
He reminds me about that every time I see him
as well. You know, he said, you know, we had
Champ Bailey on one side and Kirby in the secondary
there at safety and I ended up going a pick
to the kirby inste A Champ Settle. He likes to
remind me about that one.
Speaker 11 (19:44):
Hey, Tim, you could just tell him you could get
him now for sure you're in a lot better shape.
Speaker 16 (19:48):
Oh yeah, yeah, I definitely if we start a flag
football league, I definitely got it.
Speaker 4 (19:54):
That's right. Tell him that Saturday.
Speaker 2 (19:56):
You'd like to have this guy in your program?
Speaker 4 (19:58):
Yeah, hey, you think I'd love to have Tim at
any time? He could go play right now.
Speaker 2 (20:04):
Yeah, it looks like that's right.
Speaker 4 (20:06):
Congratulations again, Tim.
Speaker 16 (20:09):
I appreciated coach. It's going to be all with you guys.
It's I appreciate everything you've done for the university, and uh,
you know, just uh, I know we're coming off a
tough game last week, but you know that's part of
life in the SEC, you know. I mean, I'm still
excited about this season, what this team can accomplish, and uh,
you know, still believe in those guys and obviously love
the coaching staff there. So I think I think we've
got great things ahead of us.
Speaker 4 (20:28):
I appreciate it.
Speaker 2 (20:29):
Tim.
Speaker 11 (20:29):
I feel the same way, where you know, it's one
game and and you've been through it, you know. So
you're a guy that uh, you know, Tim, Tim goes
and gets the honor of going to an expansion team
number one overall and uh and uh you know, and
and had to fight your way out of it, and
you fought your way out of it, you know, and
and that's what we have to do.
Speaker 16 (20:48):
Yeah, Tim, you were you know, I think, Oh, go ahead, Tom,
I was.
Speaker 2 (20:52):
Gonna say, you've been in the spot a long time where,
you know, a long time ago, but where you were.
You know, you go through adversity as a quarterback when
I was here or the in the NFL. Any any
advice for for Brock as he tries to bounce back
from a tough day.
Speaker 16 (21:06):
Yeah, you know, certainly I've been there.
Speaker 2 (21:08):
You know.
Speaker 16 (21:08):
Coach mentioned, you know, being on being a part of
an expansion team in the NFL my my rookie year,
and you know, you know, you don't have a lot
of time to throw, You don't have a lot of
we didn't have a lot of weapons around me in
Cleveland at that point. And and it's tough, you know,
you know, this is this game. You need all your
teammates making plays for you. You need the offensive line giving
you time to throw. It all goes ind in hand. Obviously,
(21:28):
the quarterback is going to get a lot of the
you know, the credit when the team wins, and he's
gonna get a lot of playing when he lose. But
you know, really, if you go back and you watch this,
you know it's it was a total team effort. You know,
it wasn't just Brock's fault. You know, I think the
offensive line struggled a little bit at times, and and
we didn't make a lot of plays around him. So
you know, Brock's gonna he's not gonna have a really
great opportunity to go out and play well. So I've
(21:49):
certainly been there, and you know, if I had to
give him any advice, it would just be to you know,
never let you never lose yourself confidence, you know, because
he know, he knows he's a good football player. He
wouldn't be in this position if he wasn't. And he
just got to go back to work. You know, that's
the only thing you can do in this game. You know,
I've played in this conference, and if you don't play
your best game and another team comes and plays a
great game, they're going to beat you to death. You know,
and that's kind of what happened to us. He walks
(22:11):
into a bus all there not playing our best game.
But you know, the season is one game. It's long
season ahead, and I would just I would just encourage
him to continue to work hard and and encourage the
guys and be a team leader.
Speaker 4 (22:23):
Yeah.
Speaker 2 (22:23):
Great advice.
Speaker 4 (22:24):
It's great advice, and it's so true.
Speaker 11 (22:25):
You know, not everybody sees all those little things tim
that that just go into it, and everybody thinks it's
just offensive line or just whatever. I mean, it's it's
a guy here, it's a guy there, it's a running back,
it's a.
Speaker 4 (22:35):
Tight end with a chip.
Speaker 11 (22:37):
I mean, there's plays to be had and we're just
not executing. But but it's not at all on the quarterback.
I said that is press conference today. I mean, you know,
over half the plays that he didn't have a chance,
you know, so you know, we obviously got to put
it together, you know, with a whole team concept. But
but we'll get there. And I and to your point,
you know that that's what I tell the team all
(22:57):
the time. When you're competing in the SEC and you're

very very resilient, and there's nobody gonna feel sorry for you.

where you just got to pick yourself up off the
mountain and go on to the next team.
Speaker 2 (23:11):
Tim appreciate the time.
Speaker 16 (23:14):
Yeah, I'll just say, you can get it bears quickly
in this league, coach, just like you can't in the NFL.

it's NonStop competition east and every week, so you've got

right here in the UK, each Monday night, right here
in these UK Sports Network stations. Tony Neely from UK
Sports Information just tend to be a great note that
kind of follows up on our chat with Tim Couch
and we played the highlight from that win over Alabama
(26:48):
in nineteen ninety seven and the play that got the
game to overtime that set the stage for Couch to
yeast to win. It was a block field goal that
was returned for a touchdown. The player who blocked the
field goal David Gin celebrating a birthday today, so happy
birthday to forty four. And then the guy who picked
it up and ran it in is now the Kentucky
defensive line, coach an War Stewart. And uh, that's a
(27:12):
nice memory. And I'm sure an War is just as
fast picking up a blockfield goal and running it back
as he was then.
Speaker 11 (27:19):
Right, I was talking to some folks in the crowd here,
So what were you talking about?
Speaker 2 (27:22):
Animal, whether it's in ninety seven that played that Kentucky
be in Alabama, Anwar picks up the blockfield goal, runs
it back for a touchdown.
Speaker 4 (27:28):
Oh boy, I have to hear about that.
Speaker 2 (27:32):
All right, let's go to the Clark's pumping shot bb
in lines.
Speaker 4 (27:34):
I needed one of his d linemen to pick up
that ball that was quoting around the other day. Picking
up it, That's what I needed.
Speaker 2 (27:39):
Yes, Brandon from Norah Brennan from Northern Kentucky. What's your
question for coach Stoops?
Speaker 4 (27:46):
Hey, coach, how you doing?
Speaker 21 (27:48):
You know, I know that we have more talent on
our offensive line than than what was showing saturday. Uh,
Coach Wolford, you know, he left two years ago and
he really didn't leave us in great shape when he left.
And then he coached Alabama and you know they kind
of had their worst off in the line under out
Undernick Safety. So what exactly you know are you looking for.
Speaker 8 (28:10):
Him to do?
Speaker 11 (28:11):
Yeah, well, Brendon, I have a lot of confidence in
coach Wilford, or I obviously wouldn't have hired him back.
So you know, he's a very good coach. And you
know what, it hasn't It hasn't helped. No, it didn't
help when he left. It didn't help. You know, when
coach Larama got sick, it didn't help when then Eric
(28:33):
came in. And we've had turnover it that hasn't helped that.
I've had five offensive coordinators. But again, I said it
in my press conference, will say it again. No excuses,
you know, no excuses for Eric. Eric doesn't need anybody
to give him an excuse. He's a big man that
can handle himself with broad shoulders and you know he
will work at it. I could promise you that. And
he's an elite recruiter, and you know we do need
(28:57):
to you know, listen, I've been here a long time,
so people get tired of hearing on me and I
get it, and I you know that it's hard for
me to actually say that, but it's like, you know,
when you have five new offense coordinators in a row,
you know we do need to cognuity. It does, and
and the you know, the turnover has hurt us and
and you know the area where it hurts the most
is recruiting, you know, and that's where we just you know,
(29:21):
we pride ourselves and I think our fan base and
it was Brendan you know there like I could appreciate
the respect and appreciation we have for alignment here because
we kind of turned that when we got here and
started modeling people and being physical and everybody bought in
and loved it.
Speaker 4 (29:36):
You know.
Speaker 11 (29:37):
When Tim was just on here, you know, it was
the air raid and throwing it around, and I think
everybody liked being physical and uh, the big Blue wall
and and uh, you know, I love that tradition and uh,
you know, we will get there. And I believe in
this group too. I I don't disagree with Brennan that
that you know, we we can play better than we
did Saturday, That's for sure. There is no argument here
(29:59):
from on that. But I'm not gonna, you know, pass
the blame on you know, Eric or any one person.
Speaker 4 (30:07):
You know.
Speaker 11 (30:08):
We just collectively have to do better and that's gonna
be you know, on repeat for me.
Speaker 4 (30:14):
But it's the truth.
Speaker 2 (30:15):

your questions for coach stoops and our next one comes
from Daniel. It's our Alumni Hall Question of the Week
at UK Sports Network and you can send in this
particular question for this chance to win a twenty five
(34:36):
dollars Alumni Hall gift card to at Alumni Hall and
it's from Daniel, coach asking about would it be wise
to consider establishing a pass to get the quarterback comfortable
early in a game as opposed to establishing the run?
Speaker 4 (34:52):
Yes, yeah, yeah, I mean no disagreement there. I think
you know we obviously talk about everything.
Speaker 2 (35:04):
You know, if I would think at some point, you
just you gotta find what you can feel like you
can well be confident that we'll be executed and build
from there.
Speaker 11 (35:11):
Yeah, and I think, you know, we all can do
a better job, and like we had a good plan.
Speaker 4 (35:18):
Like early they started in this in.
Speaker 11 (35:21):
What what we would say spoke defense where they have
like five DB's they could do many different coverages. But
three down line gave us a problem a year ago.
They didn't show it in Game one very much at
all except in two minutes tro And so they started
in the game in that and we had an answer
because we worked on in the summer. Expected we expected
(35:43):
it and anticipated it, and we were effective and with
the runs and actually got them out of it. Well,
in hindsight, that didn't work so well because then they
went to four down and that's where we had the
problem with blocking the four down guys.
Speaker 4 (35:56):
You know.
Speaker 11 (35:56):
And but anyway, so the first, you know, two plays
of the game, they're in a complex coverage situation where
they could do many different things. You know, if I
know that the coverage they're in on the first play
of the game, then we would run play action and
you know, have some nice plays, but you never know,
(36:17):
you know, until you go play the game.
Speaker 2 (36:18):
When you look back at what the issues were in
past protection, did you see a lot of technique issues
or was it just guys just getting overwhelmed on that particular.
Speaker 4 (36:27):
Day, you know, a little bit of everything.
Speaker 11 (36:28):
And I could say that the technique issues, you know,
were I already mentioned them on defense, you know, they
stick out to me, but but you know, offensively, yeah,
a little bit of everything, you know, And we got
beat inside two guys inside that played a lot of
football for us. Each of them gave up a pressure
inside and then the edge pressure. You knew those guys
were going to come, and so we had a plan
(36:51):
for them to chip and to you know, use tight ends,
the chip out, use running backs to chip them and
slow them down a little bit. When it was predictable.
Pass was still hard to get them because they're good
across the board. And then they could mix it up
with their uh twists and D line games and things
of that nature. So you know, I think that the
(37:12):
plan early, you know, was to know, you know, to
to mix it up more to the to the to
the question, yes, I mean, I think you once we
were getting uh, you know, a lot of negative.
Speaker 4 (37:23):
Yardage plays on drop back pass. We had to stay
away from the past.
Speaker 2 (37:26):
From Brandon at UK Sports Network asks, how do you
turn the page from a game like this? Do you
break down all the mistakes with your guys or do
you just kind of move on and focus on corrections?
Speaker 11 (37:37):
Oh no, No, you have to watch it and known
it and uh, you know, live through that.
Speaker 4 (37:42):
You know, you can't.
Speaker 11 (37:43):
I can't move on, that's for sure without addressing the
the the issues and uh, you know that's you know,
part of it for all of us. And I think
you know I said that over and over again. But
you know, you have to take ownership, you know of
you know, what happened, and you have to own your
part of it. And then you know, we talk about
(38:04):
and talk about with the players all the time. I mean,
they need to take charge of of the of themselves,
of their responsibility, you know.
Speaker 4 (38:12):
And and then.
Speaker 11 (38:13):
We just got to do a better job as we
get dialed in on on the you know, the what
we're going to do on on the schemes of the week.
You know, we got to be just more precise. We
were just sloppy and uh, you know, that's where we
just got to dial it in and hone in. Uh,
you know, be much more effective. And it's just the
(38:34):
little things. And you know we we I could say
that a hundred times to our players, but it's the little.
Speaker 4 (38:38):
Things, you know. And uh and that's what you know
reared its ugly head.
Speaker 2 (38:42):
Let's go to the Clark's Pumping Shop phone line before
we hit our next break. Gets is Josh in Campbellsville.
What's your question for coach stoops? Josh?
Speaker 25 (38:52):
Hey mark a coach? Uh hey, Josh, Bill a little
bit better today than I did saurday. Obviously, I'm sure
you do too. But yes, sir, I give my my
big question and concern is what going forward? I mean,
you know, we don't know a lot about Brock. He
comes out, had a really bad game, this and that.
(39:15):
But what what do you need to tell the fans?
I mean, you know we had fans leaving third quarter.
Speaker 4 (39:21):
I mean, you know we take on.
Speaker 25 (39:24):
Number one Georgia Saturday. Yep, we lost a pretty bad
South Carolina team.
Speaker 11 (39:31):
I mean, yeah, it's frustrating. Josh, I get it, and
I really do you know. I I get it. You know,
I think you if you listen to me. If you're
a fan, you know, you know I care deeply about
this fan base and about this place and about the
way we represent you. And I, you know, am passionate
about thinking the fan base because you know, as I've
(39:54):
said on you know, each year, Uh you know, it's
a lot to go to a football game, costs a
lot of money. You know, it's hard to get parking,
it's an all day deal. You gotta get there, you
got tailgate. You know, it's a long game. You got
to you know, wait in line to get out of there.
It's a commitment. And so how we play it does matter.
It matters to all of us, I promise you, and uh,
(40:15):
you know that that's the only thing we could do,
is is uh you know, is you know again, accept
that responsibility, own own the mistakes we made, and go
back to work. And so that's what I'll say to
the fans is that's what our players are doing and
and that's what our coaches are doing. And you know,
one game never makes or.
Speaker 4 (40:34):
Breaks the season. It doesn't.
Speaker 11 (40:35):
And yes we play a brutal schedule. Nobody's gonna feel
sorry for us. And you know, I, you know, I
accept that responsibility we do. We embrace it.
Speaker 4 (40:43):
You know.
Speaker 11 (40:44):
We have a great opportunity Saturday, and so we're gonna
punch the clock here this week. And and that's that's
what I could tell you.
Speaker 2 (40:51):

and the official UK Athletics app. Question at UK Sports
Network from Dwight Coach, are there any young guns that
can step up? Now?
Speaker 11 (44:26):
Yeah, there's a lot of a lot of young players that, uh,
you know that are that that can play. And you know,
I think Abba is want to guard you know if
you know, depending how things go this week, you know
that that make it a few reps. You know if Jagger,
you know, Jaggers a little dinged up, so we'll see
(44:46):
how he.
Speaker 4 (44:47):
Does this week. But uh, but.
Speaker 11 (44:49):
Defensively, we got a lot of young talent as well
that I think, you know, he is doing a heck
of a job on special teams and souls went in
there and got a back and you always, you know,
it was kind of late and he celebrated, but like
you know, you're happy for him because it works really hard.
He's the guys on scout team, you know, simulating some
of you know, South Carolina's guys, and I mean was
(45:10):
given him a look because he can, you know, get
on the edge and run like that. And then he
gets in the game and he works hard and he
gets the sack and you know, and so it was
good to see. You know, guys like Special Champ Kim's
gonna be a wonderful player, you know, you.
Speaker 2 (45:25):
Know Smith from Corbyn's.
Speaker 4 (45:27):
And Jacob is getting better.
Speaker 11 (45:30):
You know, there's there's a slew of those guys that
are good football players that you know, we we have
to keep them intact and like we've done before, you know,
and and developed them over time and bring it. But yeah,
I think there there's good talent there and they're gonna
they're gonna start helping us defensively.
Speaker 2 (45:48):
You could look at some numbers, I mean they were
was three of ten on third down in eighty six
net rushing yards and you guys had twelve tackles for loss.
So if you look at those numbers, you think the
defense played great. And then I'm sure you a few
breakdowns and it drives you crazy.
Speaker 4 (46:02):
It does, because there's three of ten on third down,
but two of them.
Speaker 2 (46:05):
Were just third and eleven and third and fourteen.
Speaker 11 (46:08):
I they just killed us, went on the touchdowns and
and uh and just you know, just hurt us and uh,
you know whatever.
Speaker 4 (46:16):
I mean, we need to get into what happened on
both of them.
Speaker 11 (46:19):
But but but yeah, they you look at the negative
yardage plays, like you said, there's so many in the
in the footballs on the ground and we you know,
we got it jarred loose two plays in a row
and can't get it. But you know that's we we
gave up six six explosives. I think they had two
hundred and fifty two yards and uh, but they had
(46:39):
six plays that got one hundred and fifty two. You know,
so that the explosive plays we got to get rid of.
You get rid of those, and you know you're looking
at a wonderful game defensively.
Speaker 2 (46:49):
From Sean at UK Sports Network, he said, we've talked
a lot about the blocking of the offensive line. He
thought the blocking on the perimeter with wide receivers was
also not good. Is he right?
Speaker 4 (46:59):
Yes?
Speaker 11 (47:00):
But also like on the one that lost seven yards,
that wasn't the you know, that wasn't the read. Like
we didn't have leverage on that, you know, so sometimes
you know that that's correct.
Speaker 4 (47:10):
I'm not denying that. You know.
Speaker 11 (47:12):
It's not like we were mulling people out there anything,
you know, but but it's hard on that perimeter. But
you know, we we we went into it, you know,
not wanting to give that early. You know, we wanted
to We wanted.
Speaker 4 (47:25):
To keep that on the read and hit it, hit
it inside with the quarterbacks.
Speaker 2 (47:28):
So yeah, you I think said at your news conference
today talking about having a quarterback that's just making a
second start now is third this week, and that maybe
you can you guys can simplify it, I guess would
be the would that be the way to say it
with our quarterback?
Speaker 11 (47:42):
But some of his reads, well I think, you know,
I don't you know a lot of our are you know,
the the organization of it is is pre snap. I mean,
so a lot of the complexity comes with the eye.
Speaker 4 (47:56):
Candy that's involved.
Speaker 11 (47:58):
You know, that's what leads to some of the you know, indecision,
you know what I mean on game day, and then
with the reads, you're always gonna you know, you're not
gonna be perfectly those you know, you're just not You
know that there's things that happen very very quickly, and
the picture picture changes very quickly for the quarterbacks out there,
and you know, with different fronts and different movements and
(48:19):
things of that nature. So you're never going to be
one hundred percent on on the on the reads, you know,
in the run game reads.
Speaker 2 (48:25):
And the benefit of a guy who doesn't have a
lot of experience is that he can learn from it quickly.
Speaker 11 (48:30):
Yeah, there's no doubt. I mean, he's he's a good
football player. Listen, this isn't uh you know that, this
isn't on Brock. You know there there's a total failure
you know, on on the offense at times, you know
what I mean. And so that's not ever on any
one guy.
Speaker 2 (48:46):
Let's go to the Clark's Pumping Shop phone line before
we hit our next break. Let's go to David and Louisville.
What is your question for coach Stoops David.
Speaker 27 (48:56):
May coach, this is a Judge, Man, thanks for hosting
us a practice last week. It was great to meet you.
Speaker 4 (49:02):
Yeah, I'm glad you came.
Speaker 11 (49:04):
I'm good good to talk to you again, and great
meeting you and your family in person. And I'm glad
you took me up on the offer and come watch practice.
And I'm sorry we didn't play a little better and
you didn't get to hear Tom's voice and the excitement
in Tom's voice this past Saturday.
Speaker 27 (49:23):
I'm counting on your team to let Tom say touchdown
Kentucky this week.
Speaker 11 (49:28):
That's a fair plan, Judge, thanks for the call, Man,
good talking to go aheady.
Speaker 27 (49:33):
I met, I met, I met several of your players,
and your coaches were very hospitable. My dog like practice,
take the ball around their field.
Speaker 11 (49:42):
Yeah, that's a beautiful dog you have. You know, it's
days like this. I wish I had a dog so maybe.
Speaker 2 (49:48):
I could friend.
Speaker 4 (49:53):
Yeah.
Speaker 27 (49:55):
So, Kyle, were you what what?
Speaker 28 (49:57):
What?
Speaker 2 (49:57):
What was your.
Speaker 27 (49:59):
Enthusiasm to play? I know we didn't have a whole
lot of plays, but in terms of the pace of
the place where we're picking it up some yeah.
Speaker 4 (50:07):
But trying to.
Speaker 11 (50:09):
But but you know, we were just getting so many
negative yardage plays. You know we mentioned us defensively creating
so many well they they created too many for us.
Well yeah, and and think about how disruptive they were
and we had we had more, Yeah.
Speaker 2 (50:23):
We had more.
Speaker 4 (50:24):
That that's crazy, you know that. That's uh, that's.
Speaker 11 (50:28):
That's what was, you know, just part of the frustration.
So I think, you know, as we we will pick
up the tempo if we didn't get back in rhythm,
you know.
Speaker 2 (50:36):
So, David, thank you for the call. We are coming
up on our final segment. We'll take a break and

For complete coverage of the Cats. Like UK sports Network
on Facebook, follow us on Instagram, at UK Sports Network
or at UK Sports Network if you're using x or
most people still call it Twitter. Mark. We talked a
little bit about this. There was a frustrating sequence in
that third quarter of that series of penalties. The first
one the subsequent two penalties were holding penalties, and you know,
(54:46):
on a day like that, as good as those guys
were playing on South Carolina side, you're going to get
some holes, but an illegal shift nullified a pass play
that would have gotten you almost to the forty yard line.
Speaker 11 (54:55):
Well, I think that that shift was a major penalty
because also then after that, you know, instead of being
out close to the forty and feeling good and getting
a little first down throw, you know, now you're backed up.
And also it makes it harder on those oldlignment because
now they are teeing off, right because they desperately want
a safety, which we were very close to getting the safety.
(55:17):
We had a hold. I think we're on the want
we you know, instead of the goal line. We were,
you know, a yard from getting a safety on them.
And and and so our old line gets a little
grabby and their D line are really teeing off when
you're backed up, you know, insat five.
Speaker 4 (55:31):
So that was a major penalty.
Speaker 11 (55:32):
And you know, and the holds, I mean that you know,
they were they were holds, you know, one of them.
The first one was definitely hold. The second one was
it was a little iffy, but it was a hold,
you know, And I think he was trying to protect
you know what I'm talking about, just getting.
Speaker 2 (55:47):
Tackled in the end zone there exactly.
Speaker 11 (55:49):
And it was dipping and ripping around the edge, and
he kind of just just kind of panicked a little
bit when I'm real fast. The end, you know, grabbed
them a little bit.
Speaker 2 (55:56):
So, but you guys are facing some and it comes
with what's going to happen in this league. So how
do you go You can correct mistakes and look at
the film and all those things, but the mental part
of it, how do you go about getting them where
you need them to be in terms of embracing that challenge.
Speaker 4 (56:15):
Well, I think that's just it.
Speaker 11 (56:17):
You know, As I mentioned, the first step is just
you know, a reality check, owning owning our mistakes, you know,
and looking at it.
Speaker 4 (56:24):
And then I.
Speaker 11 (56:25):
Think it's it's really important for us to zero in
on the game plan and know what the big picture
is and then you know, be more precise, you know,
be more efficient in what we have to do. Hone
in on it and and and I think, you know,
definitely our guys will, you know, I don't think like
(56:46):
they were feeling too good about them. So there's one game.
I mean, we have a long hard season. I just
think it's a reality check and and our guys we
really have to zero in on the little things you
know when you're playing really good teams have some really
talent to players. You know, you know it could, but
it could jump up and bite you at any time.
And and the penalties hurt us, the just the pre
(57:09):
snap penalties, all the you know, the the technique issues,
you name it, and that's what you know is embarrassing,
and it's it's there's no there's no excuse for it.
Speaker 4 (57:18):
Period.
Speaker 11 (57:19):
I know the fans are frustrated. I am too. I
don't blame them, and that was a frustrating game. And
I can promise you we're gonna we're gonna attack this
week to get better.
Speaker 2 (57:26):
Good luck on getting corrected.
Speaker 4 (57:28):
I appreciate you.
Speaker 2 (57:28):
