Yes, Hello and welcome to one forty. Great to have
your company this evening. James Bracy is off on swimming duty,
so sorry you will have to put up with me,
but we have all the regulars here. Paul Gullen, how
are you, Tam Smith?
Speaker 4 (03:20):
I am and Gus Emma are.
Speaker 6 (03:23):
You very well?
Speaker 1 (03:23):
You must be very happy. After that, we.
Speaker 11 (03:28):
Get with you the same thing, only halfway.
Speaker 1 (03:32):
What are we going to say when when you're at
the finals? Anyway, we'll get to that shortly, but we'll
start with what we learned from the week, So Gus
you can go first.
Speaker 4 (03:38):
I've been saying it for weeks and I'm going to
say it again. You've got to start believing your own eyes.
The Warriors and the Raiders. Gee, they're two really good
football teams. Warriors went to Shark Park the other night.
They weren't favorites in this game. For some reason. Everyone
thought the shark over the round, but the Warriors just
handed it to them. Absolutely brilliant performance and if anything,
they're getting better every week. And the Raiders too well,
they celebrated the big win down there in the Capitol.
(04:00):
Josh Papoali Blanking's or a record number of games for
the club at three hundred, nineteen and twenty games. And
look at the con version. They would have gone over
from anywhere, from anywhere? Where has he been hiding that
talent Raiders and the Warriors. I believe your eyes people
there there look.
Speaker 5 (04:16):
Just behind the Dogs.
Speaker 1 (04:19):
Thanks staring love it Cam, would you learn Well, we're.
Speaker 2 (04:23):
Going to go back back to Thursday night. It was
Knights the Manly up in Newcastle and the great Man
pulled sidelined and when you said make get out there
for golden point, the game's going to golden point. Let's
just go through his commentary. Have we got that, We've
got the vision of gather at the coin.
Speaker 5 (04:42):
Daily won the toss.
Speaker 11 (04:43):
Daly has won the toss, and they will run the
same way they're running at the moment, so teams will
not change direction. Daly Charvon's won the toss.
Speaker 9 (04:53):
Man the Man.
Speaker 5 (04:54):
They were received all right, we don't know. We don't
he's receiving it.
Speaker 11 (04:58):
Mainly won the toss, but we're not sure who's your receiving.
Speaker 5 (05:02):
This.
Speaker 11 (05:02):
Guy's a good job on the sideline, especially when you're
explaining Golden Point and who's kicking off?
Speaker 5 (05:05):
And was lucky I had? Here's the game. Look, DC
won the toss.
Speaker 11 (05:13):
I knew that toss, but I did. I did ask
the general official. I said, who's kicking off? And he said,
I don't know which he didn't know, he didn't know.
It was totally threw me.
Speaker 5 (05:25):
But I will admit I wouldn't remembered anyway. Okay, I
wouldn't remember.
Speaker 4 (05:29):
When you win the YouTube captains, you should know, so when.
Speaker 9 (05:31):
You win the toss, he doesn't.
Speaker 4 (05:33):
Obviously, when you win a toss in Golden Point, you
don't decide which way you run. You decide if you
kick off or receive, don't you.
Speaker 2 (05:39):
So you got the option option? Yeah, you got the option.
So if you choose the run that way kicks.
Speaker 4 (05:45):
Off, the opposition kicks off.
Speaker 5 (05:46):
Yeah, I wouldn't remember it anyway.
Speaker 4 (05:49):
What if you choose to kick.
Speaker 9 (05:50):
Off, well, then the opposition which way they run.
Speaker 4 (05:53):
It's a tough one, especially when the NFL play said
to get you South Wales and the Queens and captain
here and the renew the rules.
Speaker 1 (06:03):
Long time would you learn?
Speaker 11 (06:04):
Go Joey on the Sunday Footish Air saying, Smithy and
fredis who coach the Australian team. Now they probably won't
both get it. I thought having both involved would be
absolutely outstanding. Just wondering whether the Smithy would leave his posts.
The Crumb and Eagles under fifteen.
Speaker 2 (06:28):
What's been a what's going on there?
Speaker 1 (06:31):
Did you do that?
Speaker 5 (06:32):
I didn't do that. Now I'm not that good at all.
Speaker 4 (06:34):
What was your junior league club?
Speaker 2 (06:36):
Logan brothers?
Speaker 4 (06:37):
Logan brothers a bit further north?
Speaker 2 (06:40):
So this this club here, the Crumb and the Mighty
Crumb and Eagles. It's it's on the southern part of
the Gold Coast coaching my young fellow there under sixteens.
Speaker 9 (06:47):
At the moment.
Speaker 1 (06:48):
So they're going, all right, well, grill you a little
bit more later and chat all things kangaroos. But for now,
of course, we have to get to the big news
of the day and the bombshell. Adam Arones camp that
daily Cherry Evans will not be there for Game two today, Billy,
later saying it was the toughest call of his coaching
career full.
Speaker 9 (07:05):
Time in the South Wales.
Speaker 7 (07:08):
One mill over Queensland, over Queensland.
Speaker 12 (07:12):
With losing comes the question, so yeah, I'd love the
opportunity to come back and correct it and back directed directed.
Speaker 1 (07:18):
Directed director.
Speaker 9 (07:20):
An Extraudiny. Better football by the thirty five year old Queensland.
Speaker 3 (07:25):
Captain who gets better by the year.
Speaker 9 (07:28):
How good is he?
Speaker 13 (07:29):
Is?
Speaker 1 (07:29):
He?
Speaker 12 (07:29):
A lot of the talking point after the game Bill
was DC whether it's time's up.
Speaker 4 (07:33):
What's your thoughts on that?
Speaker 12 (07:35):
Giving our performance in game one, something needs to change change,
whether that's personnel change or we just need to shift
our mindset.
Speaker 4 (07:42):
I'm not sure yet.
Speaker 2 (07:43):
And on behalf of the worst ever Queensland team, thank
you very much.
Speaker 4 (07:48):
I wouldn't drop Terry Evans. I really wouldn't. I know
the other kid did in his close and I know
he came off the bench and looked great, So I
think they need the experience.
Speaker 12 (07:57):
Won't hear a negative word from me about Daily Cherry Evans.
What he's given this jersey and that'll be with all
Queenslanders and with Daily.
Speaker 6 (08:04):
For the rest of his life.
Speaker 12 (08:07):
But we just feel that Tom Dian is the right
person for the number seven jersey right now, with the
number seven jersey right now.
Speaker 1 (08:15):
Very pleased to say that Billy Slater joins us live
now here on one hundred percent Footy. Bill, Thanks for
coming on. We just heard a little bit from your
media conference earlier today, but can you give us a
bit more of an insight into just how tough it
was firstly to make the decision to drop DCE and
then of course to have to make the phone call
as well.
Speaker 12 (08:34):
Yeah, obviously, you know we don't take these decisions lightly, am,
and you know I made sure it was the first
decision and sorry, the first phone call that I made.
I didn't speak to any other players before I spoke
to Daily. I felt he deserved that respect, and it
was actually a phone call that was had a whole
heap of class and character about it, the way he.
Speaker 6 (08:58):
Took the news.
Speaker 12 (08:59):
We had a great conversation after I delivered the news
to him, you know, and that was in and around
his origin career and what he's done in this Jersey
and that doesn't change. You know, he's helped lift this shield,
you know, three out of the last five serieses, and
he's been a great leader. He's been a great player
and a great half back for the Queensland Morons and
(09:20):
that'll never be forgotten.
Speaker 2 (09:22):
Billy. All the players come into camp at some stage today.
How have the squad taken the news that Daily won't
be there. I'm assuming every player in this current squad
they haven't played a game without Daily, Cherry Evans.
Speaker 12 (09:37):
Yeah, it's actually a good question, Cam and something that
we haven't even touched on as yet. So only players
arrived around about lunchtime today, so.
Speaker 6 (09:47):
You know, over the next couple of days.
Speaker 12 (09:49):
You know, obviously there's been some changes within the team,
but at the same time, you know, we need to
change some things that we didn't get right in game one.
Speaker 6 (09:57):
That's that's the priority for this group now.
Speaker 12 (09:59):
It's not say much about you know, who's not here
and the changes that are on the team sheet. It's
it's more about the actions that we need to change
to make sure that that we play our best football
on Wednesday week.
Speaker 5 (10:12):
Billy, are you boyed?
Speaker 11 (10:13):
I know you haven't named your team you have, but
Corey Hawes was in the side you've beaten pretty convincedly
through the middle in Game one.
Speaker 5 (10:20):
Are bringing him into try and stiffen that up there.
Speaker 12 (10:25):
I just think Corey has earned the opportunity to get
back into this squad. He's got himself nice and fit
over the off season, which which he was when when
he played for this footy team, and he's doing plenty
plenty right. I just heard Gus talking about the Warriors
and the Raiders. Well, you know, Corey has been instrumental
in the Raiders form this year, and you know he's
(10:46):
even held Big Papa on the bench at times. So yeah,
he's doing a great job and I we just feel
that he's earned the opportunity.
Speaker 2 (10:56):
Billy.
Speaker 4 (10:57):
First of all, all power to you, mate. It's a
very big decision, but you're in a position that takes
big decisions and you've shown a lot of courage to
do it. The question I've got is, at what point
did you know such drastic change was necessary? It was
a gut fill you had during the game, after the game,
or just in deliberation over the last couple of weeks
before you've got the selection. Was there a point where
(11:18):
you knew this decision had to be made.
Speaker 12 (11:23):
Yeah, Like you know, Gus, being in this position, you
take all these decisions incredibly careful and with a lot
of thought, a lot of consultation with people whose opinion
that you respect and you value. And then the decision
wasn't actually made until yesterday, So that was the time
(11:47):
that I notified Daily and you obviously have an idea
of what you like the team to look like, but yeah,
it wasn't made until yesterday officially.
Speaker 4 (11:57):
All right, well, I'll go this way. So what does
Tom didn't give you that you didn't think Daily Cherry
Evans could.
Speaker 12 (12:06):
Well, I'm sure you've watched Tom didn't player. He's a
wonderful player in his own right. He's he's probably in
the form of his career now. I really like the
way that he's actually taken control up there in Townsville,
moving into the number seven jersey.
Speaker 6 (12:24):
And the great thing.
Speaker 12 (12:25):
About this footy team, you know, with Tom did and
is that he's going to get a lot of help
in and around him with the key.
Speaker 6 (12:29):
Positions that that we do have.
Speaker 12 (12:31):
So you know, we just want Tom to be Tom
and you know if he does that.
Speaker 6 (12:36):
That we're going to be a pretty handy footy team
going forward.
Speaker 4 (12:39):
All right, Well, for Tom Didden or Daily Cherry Evans
or either he brought back Jonathan Thurston or Cooper Kromp.
They're going to find it hard to function given the
way your middle forwards winning that game and the way
they were dominated. Isn't that where the game starts for
you in this game?
Speaker 2 (12:54):
Yeah?
Speaker 12 (12:54):
Absolutely, And that's one of the areas that I spoke
about before in terms of, you know, we've got to
change some things to help us get our best footy.
On the other thing, Gus is you know, we gave
three penalties a seven tackle set and we dropped a
ball on play one in the first ten minutes. So
that makes it extremely hard and it helps the opposition
(13:15):
get their footy going and make them feel good about
their game.
Speaker 6 (13:18):
So we want to try and rectify that as well.
Speaker 2 (13:22):
Senior just named a squad at the moment, Billy, rather
than name the team. There's a vacancy now for the captain.
C Have you got a front runner in mind.
Speaker 6 (13:32):
Yeah.
Speaker 12 (13:35):
We're very fortunate Cam that we've got quite a few
club captains. But even outside the club captains, we've got
quite a few great leaders within our footy team. And
you know that decision will be made tomorrow when we
name our side one to eight een or one to
twenty for that matter.
Speaker 6 (13:52):
And you know that'll obviously be a new captain.
Speaker 12 (13:57):
But at the same time that new captain, we'll have
a whole heap of support around him. So it'll be
a proud moment for one of the guys when we
name them captain. But at the same time they've got
some great leaders in this footy team that will support them.
Speaker 2 (14:12):
What about preparation for this one. You've been coach of
the Morons when they've had the travel over to Perth
game two of twenty twenty two. I believe it was
not a great result for the Morones that night. Have
you made some changes with your preparation and your travel.
Speaker 12 (14:28):
Yeah, we're actually going over a little bit earlier, Cam
So that was obviously made months ago, the idea to
go over a little bit earlier and settle in and
have a couple of sessions over there.
Speaker 6 (14:41):
But we have to do it the long way.
Speaker 12 (14:42):
Now, we've got to go to Perth, keep the series alive,
and then we've got to go to Sydney. Actually, don't
mind the long way. We've been taking a few shortcuts.
Speaker 2 (14:50):
Of Black.
Speaker 1 (14:55):
Bill. We'd like to see you over there next week
in Perth, I enjoy the build up. Then, thank you
so much for coming on here to one hundred percent footy.
Speaker 6 (15:05):
Pleasure.
Speaker 1 (15:05):
Have a good night, Billy Slater there, Gus Gee grilled in.
Speaker 4 (15:10):
Well, look, you know I've said I wouldn't have dropped
daily Cherry Evans, but I respect his right to do that.
He's the coach. He's got to make the big decisions,
and I think that's why he's going to be a
great coach. As time goes on, people are going to
realize he's a great coach and he's a great knowledge
of the game. So I respect his right to do that,
and it's a big call. I'm just wondering what Didn't
(15:33):
can provide the daily Cherry Evans couldn't because Didon doesn't
play the Cherry Ovens role for his club side. Now
he's got to walk into Origin when then one kneel
down in the series against a very good News South
Welt side, and I don't think any halfback, let alone
a rookie, is going to function behind a forward pack
that was beaten up as badly as them.
Speaker 11 (15:48):
That's that's the best point you raise, Gus. I wouldn't
have matter who they had.
Speaker 5 (15:51):
JT.
Speaker 11 (15:52):
Exactly half back therefore were totally dominated. They were on
the back for conflict. I've come out of there and
I know DC probably kick as well he wanted to,
but they're on the back foot the entire game.
Speaker 5 (16:02):
The entire game. The Blues forward on.
Speaker 4 (16:04):
The other side of that is me thinking, all right, well,
if that happens again, and it happens again daily, Cherry
Evans at his stage of his career, is far better
equipped to deal with that than throwing in a kid
now and having to deal with that if it happens again,
If New South Wales dominating the forwards again and did
and can't get into the game, how is that going
to affect him and his development as a player going forward.
(16:25):
That's just I look at the other side as well,
you know Cam for you as.
Speaker 1 (16:28):
A Queenslander or do you see that did and brings
that potentially gives us a bit of an insight into
why Billy went that way.
Speaker 2 (16:35):
Well, I think the energy that he plays with and
that's just a natural thing with age difference. Right, So
Daly's thirty six, he is the oldest player to ever
play origin Tommy Didon's what mid twenties, So he plays
with a different level of energy. They play completely different
styles of a game, as Gus just spoke about, as
everyone does. As you get older too, your game evolves,
(16:58):
it changes. You don't have the energy that you once
had as a young man, you know. So, I think
that's what Billy's looking for out of Tommy Didden in
this match. When he has the ball in his hands,
he's not afraid to take the line on. He's not
afraid to get tackled, He's not afraid to get bumped
going deep into the line to try and promote the
ball to guys like Klem pong Are out wide, just
(17:21):
try and spark something in attack. Completely agree with Gus
and Gal with you know where this game is set up,
and it's in the middle.
Speaker 9 (17:30):
It has to be.
Speaker 2 (17:31):
It has to come from Tino, it has to come
from Pac Carrigan, It has to come from Mofight, Awakeer,
those guys that start in the middle. They have to
give Ponger a chance. They have to give Monster a chance.
They have to give tom Didden opportunities through the hard
work in the middle.
Speaker 9 (17:45):
They can't afford to play lot.
Speaker 2 (17:46):
They didn't get dominated like they did in Game one.
Speaker 4 (17:48):
Just before we leave this subject. I mean Dali Cherry Evans,
what a wonderful servant he's been through. Like I think,
you know, we don't want this to Wendy's career in
any sort of negative way. What he's done for the
Morons has been absolutely outstanding over a period of time.
Speaker 2 (18:01):
He's a three time series winning captain for Queensland. Incredible
twenty six matches, twenty consecutive at halfback, pretty impressive.
Speaker 1 (18:10):
Incredible career. And it's not to say that it is
finally that's right exactly as well.
Speaker 4 (18:15):
Did you play a club season without playing Origin? Did
you retire from Origin?
Speaker 2 (18:19):
Yes? I did?
Speaker 9 (18:19):
Yeah, I played my last three three Yeah.
Speaker 4 (18:22):
Why did you do that? Did you feel as though
you weren't up to Origin anymore? You just wanted to
play for your club.
Speaker 2 (18:28):
I felt it was taking away from club footy?
Speaker 4 (18:30):
Yeah?
Speaker 2 (18:30):
Yeah. And I reckon if I played on So I
finished up in twenty seventeen all representative football. I reckon
if I continue playing for Queensland and Australia.
Speaker 9 (18:39):
If my selection was worried with my.
Speaker 4 (18:42):
I think it'll been.
Speaker 2 (18:46):
I don't know if I would have been able to
go as long as I did club footy that might
have finished me entirely in twenty eighteen. So I think
it prolonged my career a couple.
Speaker 9 (18:53):
Of years at least.
Speaker 1 (18:55):
As we mentioned, it's only a squad at this stage.
Billy will name the final seventeen tomorrow. Ezra Men has
been included in the squad only three games back for
the Broncos after that lengthy suspension, and as we all
expected it, and Billy said it today he expected to
there was some backlash.
Speaker 4 (19:16):
Yeah, well, of course there's going to be some backlash.
I mean, you know, people won't mistakes, and I'm all
for second chances, but this is very very forgiving, very forgiving.
Even playing for the Broncos is forgiving, and it's more
out of need than out of deservedly. So, but you know,
the past is the past. Everyone has a future and
let's hope as Ramam gets in there and does a
(19:38):
good job for the Maron.
Speaker 11 (19:39):
I think if he's the eligible selection, which he is
for me, there's no issue. I mean, I think the
issue more is, as you said, the fact is allowed
to be back by then error, but he's done.
Speaker 4 (19:49):
His issue is that he's eligible, that's not that he's
been pick.
Speaker 5 (19:52):
But that's what I mean.
Speaker 4 (19:53):
That's a different argument. And you know, I've given plenty
of people second chances in you know, I mean, it's
just I get it, but it's very forgive me of
the game.
Speaker 1 (20:01):
All right, So Cam, this is your predicted team. Yeah,
in terms of the skipper, who are you going? You
mentioned plenty of club captains. You've got Harry Grant, You've
got Tino as well, Pat Carrigan.
Speaker 2 (20:14):
Yep, you're going to even throw Camera Munster in there
as well. You know, always performs and gives his best
at this level. Was he's hard on his sleeve? I
think Tino, Yeah, I think. I think he's got a
great personality. He's got a great character, never really gets
flustered at all. I think that that's something that's really
(20:35):
important at this at this level.
Speaker 4 (20:36):
What about the fact that he probably won't play eighty minutes.
Speaker 2 (20:40):
I took that into consideration. I think I think Billy
will be okay with that. That's if that's the person
that he wants to go with.
Speaker 9 (20:47):
He may go with something like a Harry Grant.
Speaker 5 (20:50):
Harry Grant playedy minutes or they have Kirk Man. Do
you think all?
Speaker 2 (20:53):
I think, well, I think Kurt Man will be the
fourteen definitely for this game.
Speaker 4 (20:58):
If he is, I reckon, You'll start nine.
Speaker 2 (21:00):
You reckon Kurt?
Speaker 4 (21:01):
Will I reckon Kurt?
Speaker 2 (21:02):
Mental stands possibility.
Speaker 5 (21:05):
Carry out of that tough stuff the first.
Speaker 2 (21:07):
Well, you know, I said in the wash up of
Game one, I've been a big believer that. You know,
Harry Grants, he's a wonderful player, He's a.
Speaker 9 (21:14):
Great dummy half at this level.
Speaker 2 (21:17):
Though he plays his best football when he's kept out
of the first twenty minutes.
Speaker 4 (21:22):
Well, you like to know what it's like. It's awesome.
I mean it's a different level of football and a
different level of physical contact, a different level of fatigue.
And you don't want that skill player like that exhausted
in the first twenty minutes because there's other side over
working him as they did in Game one. So I
think it only makes sense to make him my weapon
off the bench, where he can come into the game
after twenty five thirty minutes and do what he's always
(21:42):
done from the bench. You can't do that if you've
already made thirty tackles in the first twenty five minutes.
You can't have that impact.
Speaker 5 (21:48):
Let's stop giving him ideas.
Speaker 2 (21:51):
I don't know.
Speaker 1 (21:51):
I don't give many ideas.
Speaker 2 (21:56):
Take it. I'll takeing notes here.
Speaker 6 (21:57):
We'll get a caller.
Speaker 4 (21:58):
All I know is that whatever they're not going to do,
I'll tell them the right thing, and they won't do it.
I tell them not to drop down the smartest us
go Traverse psychology.
Speaker 1 (22:12):
Well, coming up, we're going to get all the latest
from New South Wales camp as they look to lock
up the series next or Wednesday.
Speaker 13 (22:20):
In Perseus Limited and Super League hit Australia. In nineteen
ninety five, Bayne Bennett decided to stand down from the Queensland.
Speaker 12 (22:36):
John Wayne Bennett was shortened to the point just resigned
the phone.
Speaker 13 (22:42):
I get this phone call from Ross Livermore, who's the
CEO QRL, And he goes, mate, Hey, Rosscoe, what's what's
going on?
Speaker 2 (22:49):
Champ?
Speaker 13 (22:49):
He said, Mate, Wayne Bennett just stood down from the
Queensland job. We'd love you to coach Queensland this year.
I go, yeah, I'll do it, he said, sweet her
things up and I go what just happened?
Speaker 9 (23:05):
I'm the Queensland coach.
Speaker 11 (23:06):
The arl has band players who've signed for Super League
from playing representative.
Speaker 13 (23:10):
Football officially from the QRL no Super League players who
have signed with them are to be picked, right, So
our pool goes from this to this anyway, So the
next day everyone gathers in camp and this kid walks
in in board shorts and thongs and a singlet and
(23:31):
a cap. Turn backwards. I mean, he looked like a
delinquent from somewhere. I think this kid's following us. I said, mate,
stop right there. I said, this is for Origin players only.
If you'd like an autograph, wake down on the foir.
We'll be down in half an hour. He goes, I'm
being like them. I mean your team, you dickhead, you're
been liking Oh we're gone, Come.
Speaker 9 (23:53):
On chance, let's go and win a series.
Speaker 5 (23:56):
The Maroons taken out for the first time by Trevor Gildby.
Speaker 13 (24:01):
That first game. They really bet they knew.
Speaker 9 (24:05):
They knew it.
Speaker 13 (24:06):
Origin was all about.
Speaker 9 (24:06):
They had self.
Speaker 13 (24:07):
Belief, queen plan and prod of performer chopping. I hear
someone going Queen's Land, it's on and I don't think
anyone landed the punch.
Speaker 5 (24:19):
Wow, we've seen twenty of them, did I have done?
Speaker 9 (24:21):
That's just one of the man.
Speaker 13 (24:22):
If there's a favorite moment of the whole State of
Origin series. For me, it's when Brett Dallas picks the
ball up from dummy half and runs the ninety five
meters to score what ended up the match winning tried
Brett Allen teak out the lady the name. Everyone goes nuts.
Speaker 9 (24:42):
He's green height name guy who.
Speaker 13 (24:46):
Won the first series since what nine a ninety won?
Speaker 7 (24:50):
Oh Gordon, it's all up coaching me, recal.
Speaker 13 (24:54):
I mean those players are so bloody proud of those players.
Speaker 6 (24:57):
Queensland won, they won.
Speaker 13 (25:00):
The job's not done game three in Brisbane. So this
is the one We've got to win.
Speaker 1 (25:06):
This.
Speaker 13 (25:06):
This is more important than winning the series. This is
this is complete domination. This s what Origin does. It
just makes you play better. It was so emotional, so good.
What those players did was just incredible.
Speaker 9 (25:27):
They are dancing in the fence.
Speaker 13 (25:29):
Yeah, it's the greatest six weeks of my life.
Speaker 2 (25:33):
They were so good.
Speaker 7 (25:34):
They said they couldn't do it.
Speaker 1 (25:39):
Oh yes, the nineteen ninety five Neville Nobody is now
Gus's coach of the Blues in that series. I'm sure
it's on one hand tough for you to watch, but
I mean, Fatty, I just saw a giggle from you.
Then that story about ben Iikeen in particular. I'm sure
you've heard it a thousand times, but it probably just
gets better and better.
Speaker 4 (25:57):
I've heard all the stories. They get better and better,
but it's the best story too, of all the time.
But what he did in that series was remarkable. I
went and saw him after every game. I said, you're
going great, and I think it was an important game
in the history. It was tough at the time for
the Blues, but it was an important game in the
history of Origin because it was everything that Origin was
built on. It was everything that our game was under
(26:17):
pressure from. And you know, I could talk for hours
about what was going on at that time with the
Super League War and what have you. But for that
team to do what it did, it was what our
game really needed at that time, and Fatty provided it
with those Blacks, and they still celebrated. It's thirty years
to the day. I've got to go to a function
in Brisbane and listen.
Speaker 9 (26:35):
To all that.
Speaker 4 (26:37):
But I'll go there and sit and listen to it. Fatty,
I'll be there. Don't worry, mate, I'll be there.
Speaker 1 (26:42):
But then it provided the motivation and that like deep
burning to be able to turn it around.
Speaker 4 (26:47):
Right, Yeah, we don't talk about the next year.
Speaker 1 (26:53):
Nothing, nothing, all right to be plenty more memories made
this year? Will it be the Blues who wrapped the
series up over in Perth? Very short time ago, Laurie
Daily finalized his side for Game two, so the only
change really obviously we knew Mitch Barnett wouldn't be there.
He did his ACL So this is the official side.
(27:17):
Max King is going to start up front alongside Painhass
and then Stefano, Utoy Kaman who comes onto the bench.
Matt Burton the eighteenth man for probably the one hundredth time,
Key Kowel Mtangi is in the squad as well, and
Lindsay Smith, who's already played for the Kangaroos gets the
nod their goal.
Speaker 11 (27:36):
I think then that suppose to me, and I do
think it is the right decision. I think picking big
Stefano was a natural selection for me.
Speaker 5 (27:43):
It was in game one. He knows that what's going on.
Speaker 11 (27:45):
He knows all the process that the teams are running by,
all the games or the calls. So yeah, I think
he'd be very very good. I thought he played really
good for the Melbourne Storm on the weekend. Also, he
had a couple of runs of the second cent was
amazing when he come back on the thirdio and I
scored a couple of tries.
Speaker 5 (28:00):
I thought he was really good. But I think it's
a natural selection and I think he'll do a great job.
Speaker 11 (28:04):
I think the Blues have a good game plan, a
good blueprint. I do think they were a little bit
of conservative game one, but I don't think there's too much
needed to change too much. To be honest, with that conservativeness,
come a great completionary. They really drove it into the Maroons,
and yeah, I thought they played really well, So I
don't think there's too much need to change too much
of the game plan. And Stefano knows it all inside out,
(28:26):
so I think it'd be great.
Speaker 1 (28:27):
Gus, do you think Max King is better suited to starting?
Speaker 4 (28:31):
Doesn't already worry him. He's done both and done blow
very very well, and he's a big minute player if
they needs to go the distance too. I thought he's
contribution in Origin one was outstanding. His attention to detail,
particularly his defense was great, and they can rely on him.
So if he's going to start, I'm sure he'll do
a great job for the Blues. You know, it's always
tough in Origin because if you haven't win like that,
what you learn from Origin is that the second game
(28:53):
is going to be completely different. The same things that
got you on the front foot in the first game
might not occur in the second game. The start might
be completely different Queensland, we'd get a few penalties, things
could go differently. So I think there are things to
learn out of that game for New South Wales. I
always say the losers learn the most. Queensland have a
lot to learn out of that game. But if New
South Wales don't learn that what else was possible in
(29:15):
this game and just go with the same sort of
mindset and think that it's just going to happen again,
then that plays right into Queensland's hands. New South Wales
has to advance again and then advance again into games
three to win this series. We're only a third of
the way through it. Nothing's been decided. Queensland have shown
their colors, they're going to make some changes and they'll
come with a completely different attitude. So it's a new game.
(29:35):
Start at the beginning. Look at the things you could
have done better, Look at the things he didn't do
that could actually help you and then anticipate what is
it the Queensland will change about their makeup now that
didn't playing and Harry Grant might be coming off the
bench and all the other permutations it has. There's a
fair bit to go into this series yet.
Speaker 1 (29:52):
Cam for you if you're a Queenslander, is it Stefano?
Is he the guy that's going to instill a bit
to fear or is someone like kel and Kloel mctungy.
Did he provide a bit more X factor? If you're
the morons, who do you not want coming off the
bench and running at you when you guess well.
Speaker 2 (30:09):
I'd say Stefano. He's the bigger body and he's in
a pretty good form at the moment playing with the
Melbourne Storm.
Speaker 9 (30:15):
I think he's taken his.
Speaker 2 (30:16):
Game to another level since going down to Melbourne and
he's been a part of the system. He's played a
game already played sorry, was a part of their extended
squad for Game one m so he knows exactly what
their game play, what their game style is like for
this series. It's a strong outfit and the luxury that
(30:36):
so Whales have is just the one change, a force,
change through injury. You know, I remember back to playing
in a few series with the Morons and playing through
an entire series where you may have one or two changes.
It just makes the preparation all that better and easier,
particularly in the early days, you know, where if you
(30:58):
look at Queensland and the build up for them, they've
you know, they got a new captain to announce, they've
got a brand new halfback and Tommy didon. So there's
got to be some adjustments made that will happen in
the first few days. And I know we're talking about
the elite players of the competition here, but you know,
you got you've got to build those combinations.
Speaker 9 (31:15):
I think Wales have that established already.
Speaker 11 (31:17):
I think missed it was a really good game one.
I thought they're done a great job. So he'll be missed.
But I think the fact Step Final was their game one,
as Smith he said he was their game one, it
just makes sense going straight in and his club form
has there's no question about his club form or his fitness,
so yeah, he's an actural selection for me and I
think he's a good one, very very strong team.
Speaker 1 (31:37):
Yeah, Gus, you mentioned the fact that they do have
to be better because Billy's made changes, He's going to
have them fired up. But how many gears do you
think the Blues have left in them? Are they still
a fair way off their best footing?
Speaker 4 (31:49):
Absolutely? I mean I always say you get better the
further the here he goes. That's why the less changes
you make, the better. Cameron's even said it himself. So
I think they're in a really good position. But they
can't sit back and read on what happened in that
first thirty minutes of game one. They've got to make
sure that they're prepared for whatever happens on the night,
and things can happen. You could get two injuries in
the first five minutes, you get Hia's. You've got to
(32:09):
move around in positions. There are a lot of things
that can happen in origin that can put you on
tilt and totally change the complex of the game. Plus
you've got to respect what Queensland are doing now. Queensland
they never named their team before New South Wales. They
never come out straight away and do it. They wait
for the New South Wales to name their team and
then they keep everyone waiting for twenty four hours because
it's all about Queensland. What have they done this time?
The Queensland team was out last night. He's got to
(32:32):
be in camp straight away. He's dropped his captain. I mean,
he's deadly serious about turning this around and if New
South Wales don't respect that, then they're going to get
caught hopping at the start of the game. And at
this level, if you give the opposition the momentum and
the ascendency, they don't let you off. They just don't
let you off. So you've got to make sure you're there.
There were other things I saw in that game one too,
when New South Wales when I said they were conservative,
(32:55):
I thought there were some real opportunities for her in
that game that they didn't explore. If they've got their
eyes open and they're watching the video closely, they'll see
where that is. But they've got to get the right
to do it, and I think there are some opportunities
for them as well. I think they'll win handsomely. But
I've got great respect for what Queensland have done in
the attitude they've shown and the decision they've made, because
they're deadly serious about going to Perth of Square this series.
Speaker 1 (33:16):
Gus loves talking about Origin, he doesn't love talking about
the Dogs, but we're going to make you do it anyway,
because it was a huge win, thirty to twelve over
the Eels, nearly sixty fans. Because it's time to talk
the Dog. He's Locky Gavan as much as possible. It
doesn't matter how much you prolong it, you still have
to talk about it. But before we do that, let's
hear from Lockey Galvin. After that dream debut, No.
Speaker 8 (33:39):
To come out here and in front of all the
home fans and to get a win like that, that's
quite amazing. And the support they showed, shoots shown throughout
the whole game and throughout walking here and that was
They're quite unreal. And I'm yeah, very happy to be
a part of it.
Speaker 9 (33:54):
And yeah, I loved.
Speaker 2 (33:55):
Every minute of it, not just a win, but a try.
Speaker 5 (33:58):
What did it feel like to cross in your first
game for the Dog.
Speaker 8 (34:01):
No, it's amazing. You know all the boys that up
to that me I just finished it off. But now
just to get the win with all these boys, they've
been so good to me in the past week.
Speaker 9 (34:09):
And yeah, I loved every minute of it.
Speaker 8 (34:11):
And I'm the club's building, something really specially here and
I'm yeah, I love being a.
Speaker 5 (34:15):
Part of it.
Speaker 1 (34:16):
A special day out there at a core stadium. Gus,
you said there wasn't really so much a plan around
when and where he would come on, but in the
end it was Toby Sexton who went to hooker. What
did you make of the first outing for your big
monkey Sogning, Yeah, there.
Speaker 4 (34:33):
Was no real plan and it wasn't really decided until
Saturday that he would be a part of the seventeen,
which I thought was a big call in a game
like that, particularly against Parramator in front of a big
crowd and with all the noise that we've had over
the last couple of weeks, people are probably a lot
of pressure on him. It was a big ass but
you know, you never really know when you're on the
bench when you're going to be asked. You could have
a couple of Hia's early usually injuries sold where you
(34:55):
get him into the game. But the best case scenario
that he was going to come on with twenty minutes
to go in the game, come on in the middle
position in the field and just get his hands on
the ball and get used to playing with the Bulldogs
and get twenty minutes under his belt, and by then
you'd hope that the game was under control, and that
was per perfect scenario, that was best case scenario. As
it turned out, the game was still in the balance
(35:15):
when he went out there. I think it was eighteen
nil or sixteen nil while he was on the field,
so he had a big impact when he came on.
Good things happened to good people. It was a nice afternoon.
Speaker 11 (35:25):
So they complete all the dogs, They're complete. It was
such a high completion. Paramadal right in the game started
the second.
Speaker 4 (35:32):
Half though, pretty much they're going good mate for a.
Speaker 11 (35:35):
Team down the bottom lader, they are going okay, So
there was probably you know, obviously the first four or
five minutes was second half. The Dodge were down to
twelve men, but then they got back to thirty and
on thirty and Paramatt was still on top. They went
down the right inside the field lo MAT's keeped the
ball back in field, which actually went dead get to
the Dodge a seven tables set. From there they gave
away six again. They went downfield, kick the goal left
(35:56):
fourteen twelve and from then on the Paramater side just
could not get their hard they made errors. The Dog's
defense was outstanding and they just went on to win
the match and totally dominated. But the score one by
the end of it was totally dominant was the last
twenty five minutes of that game where they just just
ran roughshot over Parmautter. But paramatter I agree for a
team down the bottom of ladder, they are right in
most games that Burton was good too.
Speaker 4 (36:20):
They're all good. It was a tough game. Paramount have
been really good over the last month the football. They're
improving remarkably. And I was wet and slippery conditions. We
were expecting probably sixty five seventy thousand out there. I
was out there to watch the reserve great. It was
bitterly cold and it rained about three o'clock and it
just made the surface slippery enough there as well. Can
you just go back and show that Mitchell Moses intercept
try down the right hand side of the field there,
(36:42):
He's going to try and find it for us, because
it epitomizes I think everything the Bulldogs stand for at
the moment and what Cameron Surrealdo was instilled in these
players and what he's trying to do. It's all based
on effort. Look at the blue and white jerseys chasing
and some of them can't even get there. But look
at them chasing and still chasing, and still chasing and
still chasing. You know they're just far to catching. But
the fact that they made the effort, that'll be the
(37:04):
most pleasing part of the whole game for the coach
when he goes in on Tuesday Tover to review the performance.
And that's that's why they're going as well as they
are at the halfway mark of the season. It's still
a long long way to go. But Whilever, you've got
that effort, in that commitment and everyone's buying in on it.
You've got a football.
Speaker 5 (37:19):
You've moved Tobe Sexon into hooker.
Speaker 4 (37:22):
I didn't the.
Speaker 9 (37:23):
Case did the Dogs?
Speaker 11 (37:25):
You'd have had nothing to do that, I UNDERSTANDI mate,
I got no doubt about that.
Speaker 5 (37:29):
But what do you see?
Speaker 11 (37:30):
Did you see Locklin Gavin staying on the bench going
forward or would you see him starting in six or seven?
Speaker 4 (37:35):
I really don't know. We've got origin next week. Back
Burton's not going to be available, Kurt Man's not going
to be available, Max King's not going to be available.
Stephen Crichton's not going to be available. I don't know
what injuries have come out of the game. So they
place so how City this weekend without their origin players,
but the coach will have something in mind. I thought today,
you know, it was a big decision to put him
on the bench, given everything that's happened, but he actually
(37:57):
earned the right. By Saturday he said, I have to
put him in. He's been so good at training. The
players are really brought into him. He's brought into what
we're trying to do and I think he can help us.
And then after the Captain's run on Sunday he ran
me to say he said that he had some really
classy touches of training. He said, I'm so confident now
that if we get him into the game, he'll do
a good job. I don't think it matters the position
(38:18):
he plays, and it doesn't really matter.
Speaker 9 (38:21):
With the Bulldogs if you watch them all year.
Speaker 4 (38:23):
Everyone in the changes around everything in the way that
they do the game. We've got so many players that
can play different roles. So what he does him in
the next few weeks, I really don't know what his
long term position is. I really don't know. I just
know that he's a classy, intelligent, humble footballer who's going
to be a really good one. And I'm glad he's
with us.
Speaker 2 (38:43):
Like he showed at the Tigers gust and he just
had to be on the field.
Speaker 9 (38:47):
He's got that much class. He makes a huge.
Speaker 4 (38:49):
Sometimes plays he said, I don't know where to put
he just put him out there. Just put him out there.
He'll tell us over the years what position he's going
to end up. But what was really good is that
he didn't. You know, the team that has been playing
so well deserved to go around again, and they did.
They all kept their positions and they went out there
and performed really well. Unlockie Galvin had an impact coming on.
So he's a real asset to the club and asset
(39:10):
to the team, and the players really like him. They do.
I was at a meeting the other day where he
spoke to the players and they spoke to him and
they questioned him about his motives were coming. It was
a really productive meeting and he handled it really well.
He's an intelligent young boy.
Speaker 2 (39:23):
I can tell you four with Burton Now with origin Judy,
you'd say heabywearing just about heavywearing six way well.
Speaker 4 (39:33):
Bailey Hayward played six when Burton was out Earlier in
the year. Burton missed four weeks with a knee injury,
and Bailey Hayward played five eighty in those games. He
may still keep coming from the bench. I don't pick
the teams and I don't decide where he goes.
Speaker 5 (39:43):
But why did you start laughing at.
Speaker 4 (39:54):
You think cameras you think camera's missed a nice player.
When he's off camera, he's smir honestly, not me. He
gaided me into that.
Speaker 6 (40:05):
We love it.
Speaker 1 (40:06):
I'll tell you what. There's going to be more of
this coming up after the break, So let's just chill
for a couple of minutes because this is what is
coming up on One Footy Josh Papa Lee. What an
incredible afternoon it was down in Canberra. Three hundred and
nineteen matches. He becomes the most capped raider of all time.
And if you liked what you just saw from Phil
Gould and Cameron Smith, there is more coming up. It
(40:26):
is the good father and the go to of the
best minds in rugby ley going head to head.
Speaker 14 (40:43):
A holy memory that we all will probably never forget
in regards to what are our most love players and
one of our greats.
Speaker 9 (40:53):
There's a experience not.
Speaker 2 (41:01):
Such a close to mate for me. You get emotional
because you see his family standing.
Speaker 4 (41:04):
There, and.
Speaker 2 (41:06):
I take take parts out of his game and out
of his life.
Speaker 4 (41:09):
And apply to mine.
Speaker 9 (41:10):
It's been great having him at our club, especially when
I came such a such a good done.
Speaker 5 (41:23):
Probably the daddy who puts to York.
Speaker 4 (41:29):
I have breaks at this club, rural breaks, Malinger, you
got clean, Lazarus, Laurie, you've got break.
Speaker 11 (41:36):
Clyde.
Speaker 1 (41:37):
You put Josh Barley in there now, and that is
without any emotions.
Speaker 2 (41:40):
Let's just stay.
Speaker 14 (41:45):
Yes, I love this club, this club before my heart.
Just the fans turning out, Uh, just loyal in this
kind of weather.
Speaker 2 (41:57):
Yeah, thank you. Is there any chance of Key you.
Speaker 1 (42:00):
Know in the club as a goal kicking coach.
Speaker 2 (42:03):
It's a tradition.
Speaker 4 (42:04):
He actually does these slots field goals as well, and
littlejog kicks at training to if we need him.
Speaker 1 (42:08):
Who in there.
Speaker 6 (42:11):
Strikes it beautifully?
Speaker 2 (42:13):
Josh paper cap All.
Speaker 4 (42:16):
When I spoke to Popa before the game about suthing,
I knew I've never seen me and so one sole
great you more ever made than to go a coach.
I'm happy for him because the boys did it for him.
Speaker 6 (42:30):
How good.
Speaker 1 (42:30):
We love to believe in fairy tales and romantic stories.
In rugby league it doesn't always end up that way,
but that was very much the case down at Goo Stadium,
And of course it means that we couldn't go past
Josh Papa Lee for our cash Converters conversion of the
week not only a milestone match three hundred and nineteen
games a double, but then Cam Smith a conversion as well.
Speaker 9 (42:52):
Incredible.
Speaker 2 (42:54):
I think he actually did a little bit of goalkicking
in his junior footy days. I know one Josh since
he was about eight years of age, played at the
same junior football club as myself, played in my little
brother's team, and that's he actually going up. So that's
that's really good. He could He could give a lot
of top line goal kickers.
Speaker 9 (43:10):
Some lessons there.
Speaker 4 (43:11):
How often have you seen front row forwards out practicing
field goal and kicks a goal of training all the time,
every session, every session, they're always out doing it. Yeah,
I practice, he nailed that.
Speaker 5 (43:21):
I practice a field every single captain run. I did
every captain and.
Speaker 11 (43:25):
And then you got it at last week, big big Papa,
Like what a man he's been for you you talk
about fairy tars. Wouldn't be good if I could win
the premiership. The only thing he hasn't done played for
his stay, played for his country. Be an amazing player
for such a long time. Unfortunately hasn't want to camp
and they're right in there this year and you saw
the emotion ary he Stewart shared towards him. And Ricky's
so passionate about his players. I mean, don't worry, he'll
(43:48):
give it to you when he has to white closed doors,
but publicly they always stick up for here and he
loves putting your body on the line for him. And
he's a big fan of Bubbaly obviously, and he's been
such a good player.
Speaker 1 (43:59):
It was great to see that in Ocean from Ricky
And in his media conference after the match, he said,
Josh papal Lee sits alongside the Raiders' greats like Jamal Meninger,
Bradley Clyde as well Glenn Lazarus Gus. For you, where
does he sit?
Speaker 4 (44:12):
Yeah, well, people in the club know best. I mean
he's now played the most number of games of any
Raider and they had some of the greatest players in
history play for that club, a lot of them. At
the same time. They went to three Grand Finals in
a row, they won four premierships in five or six
years or something. They had some wonderful players and Josh
papal Lee at this stage of his career. Raiders haven't
won a premiership since when ninety four thirty one years
(44:36):
now since they've won a premiership. As I keep saying
to you, they're the real deal. They've had the most
wins of any team in this competition. At the halfway
mark of the year, they haven't had a buy yet.
They've got three buys up this league, which will give
him a nice run in to thewards, the finals and
who knows, maybe they can win him a premiership before
the year's over it. But he's been a wonderful player
(44:57):
and as Ricky said, he rightly sits in the Raiders
club amongst those great for the game for the Raiders.
Speaker 1 (45:03):
Hard not to love the Raiders and perhaps a second
team for everyone as well. Tell you what else, it's
hard not to love the Godfather and the Goat.
Speaker 4 (45:20):
Introduction. That's that is such depressing music. Think of it
though it's depressing.
Speaker 1 (45:29):
The topics aren't depressing, though, it's how good was yesterday?
Gus Tiger, be Panther, be Cleary.
Speaker 4 (45:36):
They might play that at my funeral.
Speaker 6 (45:41):
For a while.
Speaker 1 (45:43):
Yet, what do you think that.
Speaker 2 (45:46):
That's very dark?
Speaker 4 (45:47):
Well, I'm a lot older than your kiddies.
Speaker 1 (45:50):
You're fifty years left in you.
Speaker 6 (45:52):
You reckon at least plenty.
Speaker 5 (45:54):
You might be a mortal. You might be a mortal.
Speaker 4 (45:57):
I don't think so.
Speaker 1 (45:58):
You're an immortal of one, that's for sure. What did
you like about yesterday? Cleary v?
Speaker 6 (46:03):
Leui?
Speaker 1 (46:03):
There were some great moments. It was the talking point
of the weekend. There was naturally going to be more
pressure on Jerome Louie because he made the decision to leave.
He said he wanted to be the man and to
show that he could steer a team around. Although they
didn't get the victory.
Speaker 4 (46:18):
Yeah, well there, He's not the onlys had to leave
the Panthers during this great run. That They've had a
lot of players playing with different clubs. It was just
that he and Nathan have had such a long history.
I remember that those two boys being fifteen years of
age in the halfback academy together. Out there are Panthers.
They played together for such a long time, and there
were moments yes to they where they were taunting each
(46:39):
other and playing with each other's minds and in each
other's face, and LOUI was reading Cleary really well, and
Cleary was getting up quick and walking LEUII and sending
him back the other way. Leui strangely or not strangely,
but predictably, he virtually went to the other side of
the field, mainly looking for his opportunities. Yest I thought
it was a great game of footing, really good. Tigers
were terrific, so two were the Panthers had to be
(47:00):
good to win. Both of these players played really well,
and they've had a long history together. They know which
is other game really well, and it showed at different
times during the contest yesterday terrific.
Speaker 11 (47:09):
Battle had a couple of moments where he gave the
penalty away on the kick chase for the escort, which
I thought was a penalty, but he gave.
Speaker 5 (47:15):
One away and blaze to Langy, which look, look that's
simultaneous to me. I just half based.
Speaker 11 (47:22):
I know, we don't want to half actually got to
be protected these days, but that's that's not a penalty
like that's simultaneous.
Speaker 5 (47:30):
He's actually hitting him before the ball leaves his foot.
I don't know how that's a penalty. How do you
penalized for them?
Speaker 2 (47:36):
Did he penalize him for the contact or for the
how they say they put him in a dangerous position?
Speaker 11 (47:41):
Look what every penalizing for that was ridiculous. Honestly, that's
just not a penalty. You can't just let them smith
Europe with You can't just let them have free reign.
Speaker 2 (47:49):
Well they have that now, That's that's what I mean.
Speaker 5 (47:52):
Made DC played in the future. The way he's gone,
it doesn't have to make contact anymore. There's no pressure
on them.
Speaker 1 (47:58):
This is a statement from gray Man as Lee and
the NRL essentially backing the decision, saying the rules are
very clear. The defender has a duty of care. He
put Blace Lungi in a vulnerable position and we see
examples of this every week. Benja Marshall was blowing up.
I saw on the sideline.
Speaker 5 (48:18):
Position he put him. He lands straight on his side
him as he kicked the ball.
Speaker 11 (48:22):
You just can on their ball players just have free
reign and have as much time as that's all they want.
That's what the good ball players do. They create time
for themselves. If we continue giving them time, how do
you stop them? Hard to It's ridiculous.
Speaker 2 (48:37):
And you see where Telungi added up there? How many
how many tackles are made in a game? Six hundred
some moment half of those players will get put on
the ground in similar fashions. So yeah, I think that's
that's that's a pretty rough one.
Speaker 4 (48:53):
Keep going, girl, you're making good sense, mate, Get in.
Speaker 2 (48:58):
I thought it was a great game all one.
Speaker 1 (49:00):
I mean, I know the Panders won the match between
Louie and Cleary. Did lou I get well? He put
on a couple of big shots as we just saw.
Speaker 2 (49:09):
Yeah he did, and he had a couple of pretty
good moments for the Tigers. But you'd have to say,
you know, Nathan Cleary got the chocolates on this occasion.
I thought the Tigers really stepped up and they were
in it. I actually thought they were going to come
back and steal it off the Panthers late. They play
some enterprising football, don't they when when they need to.
We've seen was the previous week where they played the Cowboys.
(49:31):
They were down by a stack of points, down twenty
two or twenty four points and they come back and it.
Speaker 1 (49:36):
Was like thirty two six, we should have won.
Speaker 2 (49:40):
And I thought that the same thing was going to
happen on the weekend. They're just they're really good to
watch when they're on and when the ball's sticking and
everyone's pushing forward, great energy.
Speaker 4 (49:50):
This would be.
Speaker 11 (49:53):
Incredible standing for the Panther. Thomas Jenkins two hundred and
fifty got a hat trick.
Speaker 5 (50:01):
He was unbelievable.
Speaker 11 (50:03):
But this scrambled from the Panthers that that could might
say this season. They need to win the majority games
as we know, but that particular tag from science and
that can be a momentum season.
Speaker 2 (50:13):
It could actually keep them in that top eight you
know what I mean, put them in the top eight there, honey.
Speaker 4 (50:21):
They need to win eight of their last twelve. They
won one yesterday and they'd win seven of their last eleven.
They can do that on their ear.
Speaker 1 (50:27):
Gus says, it's only round fourteen. Time how to talk
Malmininger halfway? Let's talk Malmninger and the Bears. It's official.
We've been talking about it for a couple of weeks,
but he is heading over to coach to the new
franchise camp. You played under him at Origin level and
there's just no question about the fact that he's able
to get a group together inspire them. And do you
(50:49):
think a big part of his role will be trying
to instill into the players that go there that they
have a legacy to build, because it seems like that's
what he did in Queensland.
Speaker 2 (51:00):
Yeah. Absolutely, a legacy or responsibility to the game over
in Western Australia, to build the game of rugby league,
to inspire people to come and watch the Perth Bears,
you know, to bring in sponsorship and backing of the
local government. And that's what he's great at mal you know,
instilling those sort of legacy pieces that he did with
(51:20):
with the Queensland side first and foremost and with the
Kangaroos over what's it been in the last decade. You know,
he's a wonderful person to have involved in a new
franchise to bring people together, not just the football department.
Speaker 9 (51:34):
With the players and the coaches, but you know the
community as well.
Speaker 2 (51:38):
He's got great respect for the game of rugby league
and what it's given him as a person and to
his family. So he's always looking to give back and
to grow the game. I think it's a great appointment
for the Perth Bears.
Speaker 11 (51:50):
We sparked him on radio on Saturday and he said
how he's going to go out of there and try
and get involved with the West Coast Eagles and all
sorts of clubs like that really entrenched themselves to part
within the community. He also said that he's not silly
enough to know that he needs smarter people than him
around him. So for a Blake who's done everything in
the game, coach at the highest level Australia on multiple
(52:10):
series in Origin, for a guy to admit that he
needs to help around him, I thought that was a
pretty big thing for some like him to admit. So
I'm not sure who his assistant coaches is going to
be or who's going to take over there with him,
But Nowaday's going to look for some some pretty good
guys there.
Speaker 1 (52:23):
I think Michael Chammis might have a bit of news
around in Scudder, But so stay tuned for that cam.
You mentioned you would be interested in some capacity suggestions
too that it might be alongside Freddy, But I mean, look,
only fifty five seconds to go. I might grill Gus instead.
How about this, Gus, you won premierships, you were the
(52:45):
greatest coach for New South Wales.
Speaker 4 (52:46):
Ever, I's not going to get you anywhere.
Speaker 1 (52:48):
Come you never coached the Kangaroos.
Speaker 4 (52:52):
How Come I never coach to Canary? I was never
really an option back then.
Speaker 1 (52:56):
He never got asked.
Speaker 4 (52:57):
That was a long story. But I was club coaching
at the time, and then I retired from coaching, and
then I went back into coaching director at the Roosters,
and I went back into coaching origin again, and then
I gave that away and then I ended up at Penrith.
So it's sort of never really been a discussion. By then,
they had other coaches and they're doing really well.
Speaker 1 (53:13):
Did you want you at any stage?
Speaker 4 (53:15):
Never really crossed my mind, to be honest.
Speaker 1 (53:17):
But if you got asked, it would have been.
Speaker 4 (53:20):
See back back in my ear, Australia were extremely dominant.
They want everything. They could pick anyone and beat anyone
by a big score. There really wasn't great opposition back
in those days. And that's nothing against the fellas a
playgoing caching, but that's what it was. So to be honest,
it didn't really interest me at the time, you know,
the origin I really enjoyed, but the club coaching was important.
And then I go coaching away. I go coaching away
(53:42):
a long time ago, and honestly, I don't have any
regrets of that.
Speaker 1 (53:50):
I accept all of those points very valid. It's just
curious as to.
Speaker 4 (53:53):
You're very nice there, muhs, James is not yet?
Speaker 9 (53:57):
Can we keep you?
Speaker 14 (53:58):
No?
Speaker 1 (53:59):
James will say, I'm why chanting him anyway.
Speaker 5 (54:02):
He knows a thing or two about that step.
Speaker 1 (54:06):
Moving on, Last, but not least, who would want to
be an NRL head coach?
Speaker 2 (54:12):
He so.
Speaker 1 (54:13):
At one point in your career you're going to either
get sacked or be in the firing line.
Speaker 2 (54:17):
Right.
Speaker 1 (54:17):
But for Adam O'Brien, he was in the headlines this
week for all the wrong reasons. So the fans. When
the Knights were walking off at halftime, the fans booed them.
In his first media conference, Adam O'Brien got stuck into
the fans and said they know nothing about rugby league.
He backtracked and the following day he was forced to apologize.
Speaker 11 (54:39):
I don't see too much wrong with this, to be honest,
he got, I understand the Newcastle fans will be filthy.
I do understand there and they're in tooled to boo.
They pay their money to go that they're allowed to boot.
But when Adam Brian didn't know about the building, he
get told about it for the first time in a
press Consuf for his team just come back, scored twenty
one points in the second half and won the game
for him.
Speaker 5 (54:58):
They put their body in the line, down everything they
to get the win.
Speaker 11 (55:01):
I'd rather my coach stick up for me then say no,
you know they're probably right, we'll crap once again. I
would rather my coach go into bat for me like
you did for his team. So for me, I look,
I understand the Newcastle fans being frustrated and at the
end of the day they'll forgive them if they keep
winning games. If they don't win games, they won't forgive
and they'll be upset at him. But what he did
that night back in your play, sticking up for your players,
(55:24):
I respect.
Speaker 4 (55:25):
Yeah.
Speaker 2 (55:25):
I like it too. I like it to m I
think it shows that you know there's unity within that
that footy club and within the footy team. When the
coach comes out and backs his players. I think he
said those fans booing yeah, the fans.
Speaker 1 (55:42):
Fans don't He.
Speaker 2 (55:43):
Said, those fans that that booed the team don't know
regular league and the pressure that they're under in the
effort that they put in in the first half, and
he spoke about those things. And you know, I know
Adam O'Bryan quite well from his time as a coach
at the Melbourne Storm. He's an emotional He's an emotional guy.
Speaker 9 (56:00):
He's an emotional coach.
Speaker 2 (56:01):
He loves his players and he cares for them, so
he doesn't like to see them treated that way, whether
they deserve it or not.
Speaker 9 (56:10):
That's that's not what we're talking about.
Speaker 2 (56:13):
But yeah, I don't mind, as Gil said, I don't
I don't mind him sticking.
Speaker 9 (56:16):
Up for his place.
Speaker 1 (56:17):
Another emotional coach at times is Des Hasler, and he's
been in the firing line as well due to their performances.
He was asked after the loss on the weekend Gus
if he was the right man to take the club forward,
and often Des can dance around these things and talking
riddles and we don't know where he's stand, but he
was like, he could not be more clear. He essentially said,
(56:39):
it's the player's responsibility. Do you think that's fair well.
Speaker 4 (56:44):
The players play the coaches. You know, players play coaches, coach, administrator, administrate.
You try not to blur the lines and anything you do.
And I can understand coaches under pressure, particularly in this dnage.
The pressure and scrutiny from media is enormous, the amount
of magazine shows and opinions and ex players and next
coaches when the media that are working and everyone's got
an opinion on it, and social media is so vicious
(57:05):
and can you say, you know, demeaning in various roles.
I can understand coaches reacting the way that they are.
But you know, experience will tell you that there are
some responses that you do make and some that have
got to be a liit more measured, and there are
things that you'd like to say that you can't say
at different times, and you learn to know the difference
as time goes on. You know, those two fellas, they're
under pressure at the moment, Their teams are under pressure.
(57:26):
Everything's putting them under pressure. It's what's happening internally, that's
the important thing. So they'll work it out. They'll work
it out. Don't be too hard on them.
Speaker 1 (57:36):
I'm not hard on them.
Speaker 4 (57:37):
You're to anyone.
Speaker 1 (57:38):
Some of us are at times in the media speaking
of one of our big news breakers here at Channel nine,
Michael Chammers. He is up next with Scudder. But plenty
of news floating around. You don't want to miss it.
Speaker 9 (57:58):
You've got to scoop for us.
Speaker 4 (58:00):
You'd know something I'm wanting County the Dogs then if
you're dealing in fast lunch stuff.
Speaker 1 (58:10):
Oh yes, is back for another week and Michael Chamis
is in the house. Lots floating around as always Chammy.
But the news around Taylor May originally going back a
couple of months ago, the Tigers had put a line
through him and said not interested. But has that changed now?
Speaker 10 (58:25):
Yeah, things have definitely changed over the past week or two.
Danny Widler reported a couple of weeks ago that Taylor
May had too of the South Sydney facility and that
Wayne Benner had taken interest in him.
Speaker 5 (58:35):
They were willing to give.
Speaker 9 (58:35):
Him a train and trial deal.
Speaker 10 (58:37):
But South Sydney got a call late last week that
Taylor May was actually going to go to the West Tigers.
Speaker 5 (58:42):
Now he had a medical with the club today.
Speaker 10 (58:45):
I believe things are okay from that point of view,
and they've offered him the same deal that the Rabbitos
were willing to offer, which was a train and trial
deal for the rest of this year. He had a
contract to play at Warrington on the table with Sam
Burgess's club in the league. But it's instead the side
of the stay around, stay around in the NRL, around
friends with family, and it's likely, as long as it's
(59:07):
all rubber stamped by the Tigers in the coming days,
to join them.
Speaker 9 (59:10):
So Taylor may. It looks like he'll resurrect.
Speaker 10 (59:12):
His career at the Tigers, which is interesting because a
couple of months ago they'd put a line through him.
As you mentioned, they didn't think it was the right fit,
but they'd been convinced. Now Tailor's spoken in the last
couple of months. He did interview with Danny Wider about
some of his mental health struggles. So there's a view
with the Tigers that perhaps they can take a chance
on Tailor and.
Speaker 4 (59:31):
It'll be worth it.
Speaker 5 (59:32):
How is he How is he his mental health?
Speaker 11 (59:34):
I mean, I know physically, you've done a medical today
by a reports Cities.
Speaker 5 (59:37):
Okay. Is he mentally Okay? You're in the right position
to come back and play football.
Speaker 10 (59:41):
I've spoken to him directly.
Speaker 2 (59:42):
I've spoken to people around him.
Speaker 10 (59:44):
There was a lot of concern around his well being
and his mental state. A couple of months ago he
spent some time in a mental health facility and I
imagine the Tigers have done their due diligence. You don't
make this decision lightly. He's obviously let go by the
Penrith Panthers.
Speaker 2 (59:58):
Tremendous player.
Speaker 10 (59:59):
Obviously he was in great form for the Penwuth Panthers,
played in the wing, moving into the centers and earn
a deal around six hundred thousand. His extension was worth
it the tire the Panthers. So it'd imagine with the
club and such a decision. I know it's only a
train and trial, but to bring him in and the
culture they're trying to instill, they would have done their
due diligence and they believe.
Speaker 4 (01:00:18):
Their aim has always been to play together. The three
mayboys have been selling themselves as a package for a
couple of years, all wanting to get together. The sticking
point was always Tyrane because he's over in England after
he's split with the Panthers. But they've always been trying
to get to the same club. So if they can
get Tailoran playing with Terrell at the Tigers and doing
a good job. It may even pave the way for
(01:00:39):
Tyron to come back from whole KR and play with
them as well. He's done really well over there.
Speaker 2 (01:00:44):
I think that's the move.
Speaker 5 (01:00:45):
I don't know if it'll happen.
Speaker 10 (01:00:45):
Obviously a lot will hinge on how with Taylor, how
he fits in there, but there's definitely conversations are about
bringing Tyrone back to Australia next year. So yeah, I
think Gus has obviously been part of his spoken I
think Taylor and maybe all three in the last few years.
I'm not too sure exactly, but there has been conversations.
They've even admitted themselves publicly they want to play together,
(01:01:05):
so I wouldn't be surprised if they moved to try.
Speaker 5 (01:01:08):
And make that a reality.
Speaker 1 (01:01:09):
And what about now he's come out and said he
admits he doesn't know everything. He needs really good people
around him. Over at the Perth Bears, who's he looking
at it this stage?
Speaker 10 (01:01:17):
Yeah, there's been a noise around Matt King. Obviously he's
not that backy. The NRL went to Sam Burgess and
Brad Arthur to see if they'd be interested, but there
obviously coaching in the Super League and have head coach aspirations.
Speaker 2 (01:01:29):
It's eat tonight.
Speaker 10 (01:01:30):
There's conversations ongoing with Ben Gardner, the Samoan coach. He's
also the assistant coach at the Penwrith Panthers, won a
couple of premierships there under Ivan Cleary, so he's in
the box seat to take over, well, not to take over,
there's no job, but to go over there and work
with Malmninger.
Speaker 2 (01:01:47):
And the Perth Bears.
Speaker 10 (01:01:48):
Brett White's name has been mentioned as well. Mal Moninger
wants to bring Brett White across to the Bears. I'm
not too sure if he wants to go across. At
the moment he's at the canber Raiders. So Ben Gardner
one of those options. The link is probably say it's
going to be important going forward. There's talk the paint
ass is going to be playing for some hour. Paynehass
has had conversations with Ben Garnder was going to play
(01:02:09):
last year for some while before he got injured, so
so you know there's talk potentially he'll play for someone.
So I imagine as a recruitment tool if you've got
someone who's played the coach at the Penwrith Panthers coaching
at SAO. It will help Melmaninger as well, and he's
highly regarded for what he knows off the field as
well well.
Speaker 2 (01:02:25):
He takes a knowledge from the Penwrith Panthers, doesn't he
and the high standards that they that they have and
particularly around their training and their preparation.
Speaker 9 (01:02:33):
It's not all about games.
Speaker 2 (01:02:35):
It's about preparation and training standards to get you to
that level to play consistently well, like the Penweuth Panthers
have done over the last four or five years. He's
got a great relationship with Brett White too. Brett White's
been involved with the Kangaroos for the last.
Speaker 4 (01:02:49):
Couple of ye He's done a long apprenticeship. Benny Gardner,
I think we brought him down as a player. He
was from Southwest Rocks or somewhere up on the north
coast of New South Wales as a kid. He came
down to the Roosters as a player, didn't really make
it as a player. He might have had some injuries,
so he's had a long apprenticeship. He's probably been in
the game twenty two to twenty three years. Around some
of the best coaches and the best system, so he
(01:03:10):
knows his stuff. He's very highly regarded. Brad Fitley used
him in Origin I think at one stage there, and
also used him when he his time at the Roosters
when he was coacher. He's done a long apprenticeship. Benny Gardener,
he's highly regarded.
Speaker 10 (01:03:23):
Also coach at the North Sydney Bears as well at
some point, so there's.
Speaker 9 (01:03:25):
That connection as well.
Speaker 1 (01:03:27):
What about Cam Murray, the skipper for the rabbit Os
out with an achilles injury. I spoke to him a
few months ago and he was adamant he'd be able
to make it back at some point this year. How's
his come back going.
Speaker 10 (01:03:37):
Yeah, there was a setback a few weeks I think
had an infection us put the South today around the
Tailor May situation.
Speaker 5 (01:03:41):
And the club's growing.
Speaker 10 (01:03:42):
He's got obviously a lot of hurdles to have come
to the confident that if they're in finals contention the
last two or three weeks of the season, Camra Murray
could play for the Bunnies this year, which would be
a huge bitch. I think some people would probably say
they've overachieved different stages this year. The way they've performed,
especially at the start of they really came out of
the block strong to get camer Murray on the eve
of the finals. They hope in the last two or
(01:04:03):
three weeks he could be.
Speaker 1 (01:04:04):
Back, and some big conclusions this weekend as well.
Speaker 10 (01:04:07):
What do you have for us, Yeah, a lot bit
of club news, some talk out of Newcastle that Jackson
Hastings will play. He'll play against the Roosters, who themselves
will welcome back Sam Walker to talk out of the Roosters,
he played Cup on the weekend and he's going to
be good to go this week, so that's a huge
boost for the Sydney Roosters coming back from that. Aco
hasn't played all season and he'll be a massive boost
(01:04:27):
for them. Tommy Trebovich has been told he'll play this week,
that issue with the leg, he'll be good to return.
So a couple of a few big names playing in
the NRL this week after some lengthy stints on the sideline.
Speaker 1 (01:04:40):
So they're clearly happy to bring Jackson Hastings in despite
reports that the players all.
Speaker 2 (01:04:44):
Don't get along with him.
Speaker 6 (01:04:45):
Yeah.
Speaker 10 (01:04:46):
Well, yeah, it's interesting one because there's been a pressure
from Adam O'Brien and bring him back.
Speaker 9 (01:04:51):
It's somewhat forced.
Speaker 10 (01:04:52):
He was eighteenth man, I think on the weekend for
this game, and then he's got the situation where Kaylen
Pong's then heading to Queensland camp. So Fletcher Sharpey would
imagine he'd moved to fullback and that would open the
door for Jackson Hastings to play the harves And we
know he's on a huge money. He hasn't been given
a chance. He's on seven fifty eight hundred thousand this year,
so he'll get his chance. There was talk David for
(01:05:13):
Feeder would be back. I spoke to Titans today. They
say he's a few weeks away, so two weeks away
at best one more week. So the Titans still hopefully
get him back soon. And I think they're going to
extend Jojo Feeder for three more years. So some news
out of the Titans tonight.
Speaker 1 (01:05:28):
Jemmy, thank you all over as always stay with to
see you on one hundred percent. Our tag Top three
is coming right up, seen as he welcome back time
for our tab top three and us we couldn't go
(01:05:49):
past Rockstar rees. Not that much earlier than that, it
looked like he was gone and the knee was really bad.
And then he pulls this off.
Speaker 4 (01:05:58):
Yeah it was going to be out for the season
to itutes earlier. And then he does the Roger two
of us A ship that was just that was just arrogance.
Look at that, gu is, how do you tackle that?
He's a rock star, all right, He's an absolute beauty.
Speaker 1 (01:06:11):
Absolutely. Next we have Jack boss Stock, Yes, superman try.
He's had a great year, hasn't he had? Very similar
to the Xavier.
Speaker 6 (01:06:19):
Coats one didn't he very similar?
Speaker 2 (01:06:21):
Quite acroabatic. Maybe jav coachs just has the lead as
far as he tried years concerned. But he's playing really well.
I'll tell you what. He wouldn't look out of place
in a squad blue jersey.
Speaker 1 (01:06:33):
Joey was caught when Lomax was injured. Joey kept saying,
Fosstock is a smoky for.
Speaker 2 (01:06:38):
Me, save his houses.
Speaker 9 (01:06:39):
Love watching him play. How good the Dolphins go? Just quietly?
Speaker 4 (01:06:43):
Good team? Yeah they're a good team.
Speaker 1 (01:06:45):
Tough night for the Dragons.
Speaker 9 (01:06:46):
Cool?
Speaker 1 (01:06:47):
What about for you Gow? So you were kicking stones
a bit? You had to go up to Newcastle and
Gow freezing up there.
Speaker 5 (01:06:55):
I had to travel three hours of the highway. It
was the worst game and then the second half was
the best game of football senior year.
Speaker 2 (01:07:04):
It was unbelievable. It was awesome.
Speaker 5 (01:07:05):
The crowd got into it, it was brewing to be there,
came upon it. To be fair, I didn't do much
the entire game. Scots winning try that's what you've paid.
Speaker 2 (01:07:13):
A million bucks a year for.
Speaker 11 (01:07:14):
But halftime of that match, I was absolutely filthy identicals
of that to retire it was that was real, but
it was it was just crap.
Speaker 5 (01:07:23):
The second half was unreal, so I walked under. Then
I was forgetting to win twenty points in the second half.
Good job.
Speaker 2 (01:07:28):
It showed how interested you were with the summation of
the golden point.
Speaker 11 (01:07:32):
Listen, I've explained the golden point, did not wait, I
wouldn't have known anyway.
Speaker 1 (01:07:38):
Surely you get more of a say on which games
you go to. Who's the most say which games you got?
Speaker 14 (01:07:45):
I go?
Speaker 4 (01:07:45):
Where the work is?
Speaker 2 (01:07:48):
I don't know.
Speaker 11 (01:07:48):
I don't know problemly going. But it's just the fact
the game at half time was just crap and I
was just off it.
Speaker 4 (01:07:54):
And I wonder how Joey walked out on a game
he left, But.
Speaker 11 (01:08:00):
It was the worst thing about Newcastle. Newcast meets up
the cost. It's pretty nice place. It was freezing cold.
It was as a Colors I felt for years.
Speaker 5 (01:08:08):
It was so cold.
Speaker 1 (01:08:10):
God a world gows.
Speaker 11 (01:08:11):
But anyway, fantastic game ended and really good for the
Newcastle Knights, so well done.
Speaker 1 (01:08:15):
Well done to the Knights, the Broncos. They bounced back
into big Way. But there was a lot of chat
around those awesome black jerseys. One how good they looked,
but also a really great cause in raising awareness for
mental health. So great initiative came from the Bronx.
Speaker 2 (01:08:29):
Men's of Mental Health, yet the Black Dog Institute they
were supporting. So she was I'll tell you what I
was at my junior footy club when this game started.
Resembling the All Blacks they did the name couldn't help
but see all Blacks.
Speaker 4 (01:08:42):
Yeah, yep.
Speaker 2 (01:08:45):
So it was a great night for the Broncos. Under
a lot of pressure the entire foota club over the
past what six weeks, they haven't had a lot of
good results go their way. But a big win against
the Titans. Okay, great cause though, great stuff, three hundreds, it.
Speaker 1 (01:08:58):
Was so another milestone. Man from the weekend All right,
stay with year one hundred percent. I'm going to wrap
it all up very shortly. Welcome back to one hundred percent.
