Speaker 1 (00:01):
Inside Metfall, getting you closer to the game you love
with a Dean Wilson, Anna Stanley and Jenny wood So
by news Talk.

Speaker 2 (00:08):
Sa'd me gotta. I'm welcome to Inside People. The band
is finally deck together in any It feels like weeks
since we've all been in the studio as a trio.
I think it is a bit of Sunshine and the
goldieb This that you've been at the Goldie you can
see why people move there. I mean you go to
the supermarket three dollar punnets of blueberries? How much are

(00:29):
they here? Like twelve dollars because I'm not buying them
currently because.

Speaker 3 (00:35):
Hot, and there are snakes and the Australians. Too many Australians.

Speaker 2 (00:39):
That's what my husband says, think about Australia, there's too
many Australia. I'm gonna win power and then I'm just
going to go there for at least or somewhere hot
for June July, and then I think I would love
New Zealand more if I could escape in June and
July and then it would be okay.

Speaker 3 (00:54):
And then throw in Europe a little bit too.

Speaker 2 (00:56):
Yeah, That's why I need to empowerball because I want
to go first class to to Europe as opposed to
just the goalie, or I'll take the goalie. But anyway,
we're getting off task. Oh my goodness. Well, there continues
to be a lot happening in the game of netball.
There's been some big opinions, some compelling headlines, and let's
be honest, a fair bit of hurt. Most recently, we're
seeing Gail Parata step down as a Silver Fern selector

(01:19):
and she said it, shared some personal reflections. Jenny, I
know you have had a look at some of those comments.
What's your take.

Speaker 4 (01:26):
Yeah, well, I feel a level of respect actually for
Gail pa Data. I think I can see what she's saying.
You know, she feels vulnerable. She feels all coaches, just
about every coach in the country will be, you know,
a little bit worried about the lack of protection. And
this is something that Evonne Willering talked about on our

(01:47):
pod a number of weeks ago. Just you know, there's
a players Association for the players, but who's there to
look out for the coaches and just offer them, you know,
a little level of protections. So, you know, I do
have a degree of respect for what Gail's saying.

Speaker 2 (02:04):
And she actually resigned a week after Nooles was stood down,
so she's been sitting on this for quite a bit
of time, which just shows you the tension that is
still bubbling around. And also, let's not forget she's great
mates with Knowles, she's great mates with Debs, and I
think she's doing out of respect for two people that
have given her an opening into that Silver Fans environment,

(02:25):
which she has said she was only there selecting because
she want she was on the same direction as Nles
and Debs, and now that they're not there, that was
her out. Yeah, and that's the thing. Everyone's going to
have their own opinions, everyone's got their own information. But honestly,
I'm exhausted. I'm scared to go to the supermarket because
I know people have got good intentions in wanting to
know what's happening about Netwill, but I'm literally exhausted by

(02:48):
the whole I'm going to say, debacle, the whole debarcle.
I really have got to that point that I refuse
to add any more speculation or rumor. That's my starts out.
I've had.

Speaker 4 (03:00):
I just hope that now you know full power ahead
you've got Court and Drewy there, You've got Leana Leota there,
you've got good captains. They're leaders of the team and
they're all saying the right thing. Let's just get behind
them and it's.

Speaker 2 (03:12):
One hundred percent. Let's control what matters and what's controllable,
and that's backing the Silver Ferns. They're about to play
in one of our favorite series of all time, it's
the Constellation Cup. Let's shift the conversation back to the court.
Let's talk about Knipble. Let's I'm actually going to delete Facebook.
In fact, I would have deleted Facebook, but I need

(03:33):
it to remember people's birthdays because without but some of
those comments, Let's forget all that. Let's talk about Nipble.
So what better time than now then to speak to
one of the wittiest voices at Nipple. She was a
former Australian Diamond Comwealth Games gold medalist. I think she
was also a world champion. I think reminder there. I'm

(03:59):
sure she wasn't anywhere. I'm pretty sure she's got a
World Cup somewhere in there. She's now a commentator and
that is Catherine Cox, and she's here to review the
series and share her take on the pro Tears Diamonds
series that has just wrapped inside their ball Kyota. Welcome
cav It just looks like you've just had a spectacular

(04:22):
time in the Middle East. What were you up to?

Speaker 5 (04:26):
I did because I was without a child, on a
holiday with some mates and actually an next nappaller actually
lives over there. We've been trying to get there for
everana a day to see her and finally went. So
we did all the good stuff because she gave us
all the top recommendations and of course bought a ton
of Dubai chocolate home, and you know, it was nice.

(04:46):
It was nice to reset before we got stuck back
in Tonedti.

Speaker 2 (04:49):
No coaching or anything, and no but once they heard
we were on the.

Speaker 5 (04:54):
Yeah, so we might go back and do that another time.

Speaker 6 (04:58):
But was absolutely not moving away from my pool with
my cocktail at.

Speaker 2 (05:01):
That point or your coffee. Hey, Gath, I'm just coming
off a series win against the South Africans. How would
you sum up how the Aussies are looking as they
venture into the constellation cap coming up this weekend.

Speaker 6 (05:16):
Yeah, look, I think they're looking really sharp actually, considering
they've had very little time together.

Speaker 5 (05:22):
Stacy Marinkovitch was very vocal about the fact that they
were just desperate to play somebody else other than themselves,
because that's all they've been.

Speaker 6 (05:29):
Doing at training camp.

Speaker 5 (05:31):
And I think it was good for them to start
with South Africa to get a few of the cobwebs out.
Obviously try a stack of combinations. I think they'll be
really happy that the score lines grew throughout aside.

Speaker 6 (05:43):
From the last game.

Speaker 5 (05:45):
But the last game they had dropped two hundred and
fifteen cats worth of experience. There was no Courtney, Bruce
Nodles Watson, no Kira Austin, and then they had three
Diamonds start for the very first time through the young
one and then three daboos all in that game, and
they still managed to win it by twenty three.

Speaker 6 (06:04):
So I think off the back.

Speaker 5 (06:06):
Of that, they'll be feeling really good about the fact
they now get to head into the Constellation Cup a
bit more settled and having blown away some of the cobwebs.

Speaker 2 (06:15):
As I said, they've already mentioned daboos, is it taboo
or taboo? And GM debut?

Speaker 5 (06:28):
Oh Gem, well where everything from?

Speaker 4 (06:33):
Because I did notice that you taught me something any Stanley,
but going back to Courtney Bruce because I noticed she
wasn't there, but she was being wristed, and I wonder,
oh my goodness me, are we in for a real,
you know, a rematch of that ding dong that we
had last time they played with Grace WICKI I mean,

(06:54):
what do you think?

Speaker 6 (06:56):
We can only hope so much? I mean, that's the
thing is we're now in commentary.

Speaker 5 (07:01):
I think for player safety and everything else, you want
a nice clean game, but we want a nice fiery
game and something that's, yeah, got a bit of biff,
So I fully expect that to happen. What will be
really interesting, though, is how Grace performs now that the
Aussies have had a whole year playing on her, because
I think, you know, she was the unknown a little

(07:22):
before in last year's series and the Aussies struggle to
contain her a bit, but I you know, the end
of the SSN over here, I think they managed to
understand her a little bit more and start to get
on top of her. Whether that now translates into internationals
when she's back with the Ferns, who knows, but certainly
excited to see that and yeah, bring it on.

Speaker 2 (07:42):
Well, hopefully she's loomed a bit as well, so she
will know how to carry that backpack on her back
and jump even higher. But who were the standout performers
for Australia over that South African series? As KIWI fans,
who should we be worried about?

Speaker 6 (07:58):
Oh look, it's.

Speaker 5 (07:58):
Actually really hard because Stacy Marinkovic was using it as
a chance to try combos, so players weren't having.

Speaker 6 (08:05):
Full games more often than not.

Speaker 5 (08:08):
It was kind of half games in game, so a
little bit hard to say who was the most consistent.
Alice tag Neild I thought was fantastic daboot in Bendigo.
Of course, she's now stepping out of Australia to come
to New Zealand, so there'll be three changes. Alice tag
Neild is out, Lucy Austin is out, and Joe Weston

(08:28):
is out. Sophie Dwyer, Sunday Ariang and Amy Parmenta will
come in for the New Zealand League. But I'm excited
to see more of Georgie Horges. I mean, fuck that
girl is. She's my favorite for a reason. She doesn't
let hit stop her, She's super smart. I thought she

(08:49):
was exceptional in goal attack. But obviously the test will
be coming up against someone like Kelly Jackson and whether
or not you can get a shot up over that.
So we'll see how she plays. But she, for me,
looks like she might be edging her way into that
team going forward for the next couple of campaigns.

Speaker 6 (09:07):
I mean, they're all great. I love them all.

Speaker 5 (09:09):
I'm a bit Green and Gold biased obviously, but Georgie
Horges is certainly a favorite.

Speaker 2 (09:12):
Yeah, I'm looking forward to seeing her. It feels like
Australian Netbull. You're in a good place at the moment, Kath.
You know you're world number one, You're getting good crowds,
record crowds, you're bidding for the Olympics. Now, you've had
your tumultuous time in recent years. Australian Netbull, we're having
a little bit at the moment. You've had a change
of leadership with new CEO. You've got your mate, your

(09:37):
best mate, Lizz Alice, chairman of the board. How much
of that leadership has been a big influence on that
sort of positive direction that Netble's going in Australia.

Speaker 5 (09:47):
Look, honestly, I know Liz is one person in a
board and in an organization. But from the moment she's
been there, I feel like there's just been a lot
more faith in the sport and that needed to happen
because there were obviously a lot of issues in the lead.

Speaker 6 (10:05):
Up to that change in.

Speaker 5 (10:08):
You know, obviously some great leaders prior, and I don't
want to take anything away from them, but I think
she really instilled a faith in sponsors, in organizations.

Speaker 6 (10:19):
And really is leading from the front.

Speaker 5 (10:21):
And since she's been there, she's made an enormous difference
in the direction of the sport. Really got some great
people and thinkers that are you know, broader business, not
just netball, not just sport, involved in some of the
decision making going forward. And you know, look, I don't
know that that would have happened unless she had taken
on the role. And this is a full time job Forliz.

(10:44):
She's not paid as a full time job. I think
Barey gets anything for the role.

Speaker 6 (10:48):
That she's doing.

Speaker 5 (10:49):
So the fact that she's even stepped into that when
she's as busy as she is already is amazing. And
you know, she would be the first one to tell
you that it took a year just to rebuild some
of the relationships that have broken down before she actually
got to the point of seeing things change.

Speaker 6 (11:02):
So it's taken.

Speaker 5 (11:03):
A while, but we are certainly in a very very
good place and really excited about the future.

Speaker 6 (11:11):
Now.

Speaker 4 (11:11):
I was interested to see you've as we've mentioned, we've
had four deputantes, Hannah Monday one of them, and Shelley
o'donald's daughter, so and I was interested to read that
she was the first mother daughter Diamond combo. Now, miss
Anna Stanley here is you know, we've because we've got numerous.

Speaker 2 (11:30):
What about four? Do we four?

Speaker 6 (11:31):
Or five?

Speaker 1 (11:32):
Oh?

Speaker 6 (11:32):
Really? Yeow?

Speaker 3 (11:33):
Yeah, now, so we know.

Speaker 4 (11:35):
Why is it that, you know, we're much smaller country
but we have many more?

Speaker 3 (11:39):
Is it just that I don't know, we don't have
as many players?

Speaker 6 (11:43):
Yeah, I don't know.

Speaker 5 (11:43):
That's really interesting, isn't it. It nearly happened once before,
way way back in the early days. Dawn White I
think was Diamond number thirteen, and her daughter, you know,
years later, was named in the match day team but
never took to the court. That could have been that
that could have been the first time it happened. But
it's quite amazing, isn't it. The eighty seven year history

(12:06):
of the Diamonds that it's the first time it has happened.
But I'll tell you what they are the spit of
each other, not just the way they look and play,
but their behaviors.

Speaker 6 (12:16):
And you guys know what Shelley.

Speaker 2 (12:18):
Oh, I know well? And did you Shay Shelley?

Speaker 6 (12:21):
I did, yes.

Speaker 5 (12:22):
And she's loose and she's fun and she's always the
center of the trouble. And Hannah is exactly the same
human which we love. But it was really interesting to
see Shelley and Adelaide there. She presented Hannah her dress,
which was really special, but she was speechless, and we
even interviewed her during the game and she was speechless.

Speaker 6 (12:41):
And I don't think I've.

Speaker 5 (12:41):
Ever seen Shelley speechless. If there's a microphone, normally she
breaks out into song. So it was really interesting to
see someone like her just, you know, so overwhelmed with
the whole thing. And it was a really special moment.
And hopefully there's some ware to come.

Speaker 2 (12:56):
Hopefully she sings the national anthem. Next time we had
in the All Blacks, we had Ronnie Clark. He surprised
his son and sang the national anthem in an All
Blacks test and Caleb didn't even know he was going
to do it. So that was I think the whole
of the country ball there. I said, there's a challenge
for Shelley. She loves the microphone sing the national anthem.
But look talking about Thankfullynie was outstanding, so there certainly

(13:24):
was no embarrassment. But look talking about Australian and it
will been in a good place, you know, particularly that
sun Cort level. A whole lot of kiwis are coming
next year? Is it nine? Now now that Gina Crampton
genis is a nine? I mean, what's yours? Is this?
Is this good that there sort of infiltrating teams or
would you like there actually to be some New Zealand

(13:44):
teams back in there? Like I know that's not going
to change next year, but where's your sense on infiltration
or an actual team from New Zealand or two?

Speaker 5 (13:54):
Yeah, look, this is this has caused a lot of debate,
and not because it's kew players. I think it's it's
more to the point now that there's so many imports,
where did the.

Speaker 6 (14:03):
Aussie pathway players go?

Speaker 5 (14:06):
So we've seen a lot of players that have now
missed out on teams that have had to go and
play in England or some go and play in New Zealand.
And you know, Danel Wallam a classic case like how
good is Danel Wallam?

Speaker 6 (14:16):
And there was no place for her here.

Speaker 5 (14:18):
So the good thing is, you know, fast forwardy years
she's found a spot back here. But it has been
a big discussion and a lot of people will say, look,
if you want the best competition in the world, you
have to have.

Speaker 6 (14:28):
The best players in the world. That's the way it is.
Suck it up.

Speaker 5 (14:31):
I think now we probably need to put a cap
on the number of imports per team because it gets ridiculous.
Queenso Viber's got five now, given there's only ten contracted players,
that's too many. In my opinion, I think if you
had twelve contracted players, it's far more palatable to have,
you know, five as imports. I don't know if that's

(14:53):
on the cards anytime soon. So as far as having
New Zealand players versus New Zealand teams, I don't see
why they can't be New Zealand team and then particularly
for the strength of your league. That's the other thing
we keep thinking about is we're getting all these players.

Speaker 6 (15:06):
What's that now doing to the league in New Zealand And, Like,
I don't know.

Speaker 5 (15:11):
I'm mindful of that because I think it would then
be hard with everything else you're trying to achieve over there.

Speaker 6 (15:16):
But I don't know what the answer is.

Speaker 5 (15:19):
There's talk of expansion in the sun Corps Super Netball League.

Speaker 6 (15:22):
I don't know if that means.

Speaker 5 (15:23):
They're looking to other teams in other countries or they're
trying to find other ones in Australia and how that
will work. But I think that's part of the planning
going forward as well. Well.

Speaker 2 (15:33):
As you say five of the contracted players and that
Firebirds team, three of them are Kiwi's, you've got Selby Reckat,
You've got who are the other ones? Off the top
of Matt Harry Wine, Kerry Wells obviously the New Zealand
coach has gone over. They must be looking pretty good
next year then.

Speaker 5 (15:52):
Yeah, you'd think so, But then there's always a year
or two of trying to get all those superstars to
work together as well. We saw that with Image Allison
and Mary Cholock who'd gone to play with the Firebirds
this year too. They we thought they would be amazing
and we thought they'd be different. They started with two
wins on the trot, We're like, oh, here we go.
But they struggled to get a connection for me because

(16:14):
I think, you know, it takes a while, particularly when
you're looking at athletes from different countries, so they're going
to have a mix of English and you gand in
New Zealand Australian styles, they've got to try and merge
so it.

Speaker 6 (16:26):
Could all click into gear really quickly.

Speaker 5 (16:28):
Of course, Kirie Wills is struggling with the fact that
she won't get athletes till the last minute because they're
coming from all different directions and I think New Zealand's
playing another international series.

Speaker 6 (16:39):
Yeah yeah, So I mean they've got to have their.

Speaker 5 (16:43):
Breaks, don't they, which means they're delayed in then getting
to their national league club. So I think, you know,
in terms of time on the ground to be able
to work on getting some of those combos ready before
the season starts, given the season starts earlier next year
as well, it's tough.

Speaker 2 (16:57):
But yeah, and dexon the other we look, she wasn't
listening to.

Speaker 6 (17:06):
That answer at all.

Speaker 2 (17:07):
She was just trying to do the place she's googling googling.

Speaker 4 (17:11):
So, Cath, I want to ask you about the Olympics.
Now you've got them in what twenty thirty two in Brisbane?
Do you think that netball should be there?

Speaker 3 (17:21):
Will be there?

Speaker 6 (17:23):
Well, I mean I think it should be there. Should
have been their ages ago. Shouldn't it like when we're
all playing guys far out Uncle? It would have been amazing,
I think so.

Speaker 5 (17:33):
I think obviously the biggest thing for us is that
we're not a sport played by men and women firstly,
and it's not a completely global reach. However, there's certainly
enough countries that are now playing the sport and.

Speaker 6 (17:45):
The fact that it's at home, you know that's going
to potentially get it across the line. So from what I.

Speaker 5 (17:50):
Hear, up against a couple of other sports in the
decision making whether netball will get in or not, so
we're narrowed down to les three terms of decision making.
I know there's petitions going around that have got thousands
and thousands, tens of thousands of signatures on them already,
and the push is real. So fingers crossed that all

(18:11):
comes to fruition and then we can all go over
there as assistant coaches or something.

Speaker 2 (18:17):
No, thanks, I don't go to a coach. I don't
know what role would manager at a stretch maybe, but
talking about home, looking back at this Constellation Cup, often
it's the home team that wins these games. We've had
four I think in history where it's been split too two.
Why is it that when New Zealand goes to OSSI

(18:37):
Ossie often win and vice versa. What is it about
that home court advantage in Australia that gives them such
a significant I mean the numbers are good when you
look at when Australia plays at home how often they win.

Speaker 6 (18:50):
Which is actually quite surprised and giving how many Kiwis
live in.

Speaker 2 (18:53):
Australia, especially per Yeah, I can see why Kiwi's moved
to OZ. I've just been to the GC CAF where you're,
oh my god, I could see myself living there.

Speaker 6 (19:03):
Yeah, and that's where they all end up home. Take
me's up there right now. It's crazy.

Speaker 5 (19:09):
But yeah, I mean, this is what I keep saying
is we were doing a little bit of prep for
Constellation Cup at the end of the South African Series
and I said, Australia need to win these first two
games at home because it's bloody hard to then cross
the ditch as you call it.

Speaker 6 (19:22):
And perform. So it's really interesting, isn't it. But obviously, you.

Speaker 5 (19:28):
Know everybody knows how great in Australia Zealand battle is.
So the crowds are massive, they will come out in
their droves, and we've got them at two of the
biggest stadiums in Australia and Melbourne and Sydney to start.
So hopefully that how home crowd advantage gives them a
little push along to get two wins before we.

Speaker 6 (19:43):
Head over there.

Speaker 5 (19:44):
But how great now we finally got this decider, this
extra time decider finishing on two weeks was just a
bit of an anti comic, wasn't it.

Speaker 3 (19:55):
Absolutely?

Speaker 2 (19:57):
So who should we be worried about in this Australian
side the kiwis? Who should we be focusing on? Keth?

Speaker 6 (20:03):
Well, I'm not going to tell you that. I honestly
feel like they're all in a really good place.

Speaker 2 (20:13):
There's so many combinations even to peck a twelve or
a seven, you.

Speaker 6 (20:18):
Know, that's the thing. I don't. I don't know how
she's even going to get to that point.

Speaker 5 (20:22):
So there's fifteen going over she'll have to narry that
down to the twelve every game. I suspect she'll want
to give a little bit more time to some of
the debutanes if she can. But again, is that going
to happen if they're close games? Who knows? So I
think we'll still see a bit of a shuffle of
players and combos. But yeah, Sunday Arian coming into the meets,

(20:43):
she's a freak. What an incredible athlete she is. Great
season she's had as well. Amy Palmenta has had a
brilliant season with the mAbs too, So they're all going
to bring a little something different.

Speaker 6 (20:53):
I've got no idea what that looks like.

Speaker 2 (20:55):
Is this it for the Diamonds? This year is their
last as as well? Oh that's dangerous too.

Speaker 6 (21:02):
Games they're done. You guys have got to kick on again,
don't you?

Speaker 2 (21:05):
You look gleeful then? Is that because it also means
you get a break as well from talking for a while.

Speaker 6 (21:10):
I've got a few weeks left and then I'm done.

Speaker 2 (21:13):
Are you still doing a dribbling you're dribbling podcast?

Speaker 6 (21:15):
Yes we are.

Speaker 5 (21:16):
No dribble is going well. We forget to talk about
netble though a lot because we're dribbling.

Speaker 2 (21:22):
About inside netble. So yeah, we've got Ginny that keeps
us on tasks and well done gin because she always
wants to talk about the big, big conversations. But hey, look,
we really appreciate you taking the time calling in and
having a chat to us and we cannot wait to
see the rivalry back on court in a couple of
sleeps times, So thank you very much, and yeah, all

(21:44):
the best for your call for ties one and two.

Speaker 6 (21:46):
Thanks guys.

Speaker 1 (21:48):
The Inside Netball podcast Inside Netball powered by News Talks be.

Speaker 2 (21:55):
So great that Kath could join us and she reminded
us gin and in fact we had to go to
doctor Google for a minute and just reminded ourselves of
the exact new rules and you were going to talk
us through. So in the past we've had four series
and the constellation cuts that have finished too too so,
and it's often been Australia's one to the New Zealand's
one two and then it's goal on Goldiff who's won

(22:18):
the actual the Cup in the end, which is not
a great way to finish, but not anymore.

Speaker 4 (22:27):
No, and they announced it's just put four last year
and no, well it wasn't required last year because we
won it three one won three one. Uh, so we
will see how it plays out. But it's quite complicated,
so hold on to your hats. Series decided time will
be played to determine the outright winner of the Constellation

(22:48):
Cup Trophy. Scores will return to zero and play will
consist of two seven minute halves with a halftime interval
of four minutes. If at the end of that series
decide at time the score was tied, the match will
move into a period of series decider additional time. I
can tell that that was a netballer that came up

(23:08):
with these terms. In the event of a drawer at
the end of extra time, play will continue until one
team leads by two goals. There will be no break
and play between the series decided time and Series decider
additional time. So it's as clear as mud ready. But no,
it's good that there's a framework there and this is
that they can work.

Speaker 2 (23:27):
And it's only when the games after four games are
tied to too. This is the only time that it
would come into effect and it's no different to when
though it was at Delhi when they went into extra time.
It's two seven minutes and then it was even and
then they played to two and we won. So it's
it's very similar in terms of the timing. Two seven
minutes four minute halftime seems very long.

Speaker 4 (23:48):
Long.

Speaker 2 (23:48):
Well, well, I guess that would have already played four quarters.
I think An forgetting the four minutes. Let's be kind
needs to be kind Annie. Let's talk about this team.
Some of the other news that came out. We've got
a new captain and vice captain and that was voted
on by the players and management, so they were the

(24:11):
ones that have chosen these two. Cauden Berger is interim
captain and Kelly Jackson vice captain. Looking from the outside,
I feel like that's great choices. I loved what Cuden
did in that series against the tiny Jamison. She's been
very I think she's fronted media very well, so I
mean that's a really important way. She just seems this lovely,

(24:33):
calming influence. And she's also Annie playing some exceptional netball.

Speaker 6 (24:37):
Yeah.

Speaker 2 (24:38):
Well, I thought she showed her leadership in that week
before the first Test, where as you say, she was
the first Silver firm to come out and openly speak
about the whole drama that's surrounding netball in this country,
and she did it so eloquently. She just gave her
opinion that yes, there are differences, and I think she
spoke really well. And I think the fact that she

(24:58):
stood up first showed to me that she she's a leader.
And then she got on that court in that first
Test as captain and just had an absolute blinders. So
she's one of three players in the team that is
the best in the Silver Ferns and so I'm happy
that she's kept up.

Speaker 4 (25:12):
Yeah, I've liked some of the noise coming out of
that team. I think they just show a maturity. I mean,
she's what thirty.

Speaker 2 (25:20):
Two, she's the oldest.

Speaker 4 (25:21):
She's the oldest, and you know, I think that's a
really good a really good sign.

Speaker 2 (25:27):
She's also had a good year. She's you know, she's
won the Amzi Premiership with the tactics, she's one with
the pulse before she knows Evitmacaus and jury. This will
all set her up in good stead to lead the
Civil Ferns. I agree, and I actually love the wider
leadership group included Alisa Peta Toyaba. I mean, we all
know I'm a fan of hers the way she plays,
but very few people get to hear from her because

(25:50):
she doesn't do media, but she actually when you speak
with her, she's very open and we'll check quite openly
with you. She has one switched on woman, and it's
great to that you can have what I would describe
as a quiet leader come into that leadership group and
add something different.

Speaker 4 (26:06):
A quiet leader who's not altogether quiet. No, I think
that's a really interesting thing. And yeah, I'm too delighted.
I think it just showed perhaps a little lack of
maturity on the part of a certain player. You know,
a few weeks back when she spoke out after the
I just had assumed that Grace Wiki was talking on
behalf of the team. Turned out she wasn't, and I'm

(26:29):
sure she'll never do that again.

Speaker 2 (26:30):
I think it's also good to have a diverse leadership group.
I'm actually just started to read Gilbert and Oaker's book.
Still a lot people have been talking about that and
interesting that he talks about the leadership and the all
blacks that you know, you had the Richie mccaus, the
Dan Carter's, but you pull in people that can bring
in the rest of the team with you. So they had,
you know, Liam Neeson, they had Kevin Melamo, who would

(26:50):
bring in the Pacific Island Boys into into what they
believed in. And I feel that that's what Peter will do.
She may connect in some way more, you know, to
other players, and I think it's great to have that
diverse leadership group. And I think she'll be awesome. Yeah,
I think she'll be fabulous. And something asked. While people
have been talking about leadership team, they've also been talking

(27:12):
about Oh no, because there is different opinions which we
know within the group, they've all chosen to acknowledge them.
They had a big meeting and to move on, which
I think is awesome. It's funny. And again I go
back to Facebook and I've been trying not to read it,
but people going, oh, they're never going to succeed if
they're not all best buddies. What a load of rubbish.
I've been now many successful teams. We're not always all

(27:35):
best friends. We have to have respect for each other.
That's just the reality. It's just like in a workplace,
you're not all best mates, so you don't have to
be best friends. You can have differing opinions on various things,
and you can stiller form to the best of your ability.
So I thought that was interesting Ana, which I think
means that the coach has to is so vital because

(27:57):
they have to pull a group together and line them
on the same page. Yes, I've been in teams where
we haven't. We've had some players that have got on
better with the coach than others. But when you go
out on court, you're there to do a job. You're
there to represent your country or your province, and you
do it to the best you can. Whether I might
just say whether if you have that off court connection

(28:19):
more with more players, would you be more successful or
would you have more fun? Probably more fun. You would
definitely have more fun. I think the teams that I've
been in where you've got on with players more off
the court, it certainly brings that fun element to the team.
And they always say when you're having fun, you play
your best. So I'm still not saying yeah, I'm still

(28:41):
saying that you can still be successful without having best friends.
But I think you have more fun if you enjoy
your teammates company more.

Speaker 3 (28:48):
Well, what's going to be interesting.

Speaker 4 (28:49):
I think McCall's and Jury and Liota if they have
a good series, and I think there's no reason why
they shouldn't. I mean, I'm looking forward to this series.
Is what does netbuernews and do because they you know,
you move on. They're there till the end of the
year in Scotland and England. Uh and then they have
to make a decision, don't they.

Speaker 2 (29:11):
Just I want to know who's stepping in for Ev
at his school.

Speaker 3 (29:16):
I know it's mister Jury. Well he's there.

Speaker 2 (29:20):
There are not many people that I've had an amazing
chat with about this. There's only like eight stuff and
they do everything, even cleaning the toilets like this is
how committed they are at Tippany. Amazing full immersion Maori.

Speaker 6 (29:34):
Right.

Speaker 2 (29:34):
So you need someone, isn't it. It's it's I'm not
sure today, So you need someone that can go and
I'm pretty sure that can speak today and teach so
clean the toilets so, oh my goodness, I know, amazing.
But look, it's it's going to be an interesting series.

(29:57):
The sul fans. They won it last year it was
three one. The two years before that it was split
to a piece and we've often seen that there's been
four series in history where it's really hard to win
away from home. And I think this is even bigger
challenge when you start away from home, because if the

(30:17):
home team gets that momentum and gets two up, I
mean it's difficult. So how gen are they going to
get in that right mentality from that very first whistle
to just know that they need to come out to
give them the best chance of winning the series.

Speaker 4 (30:32):
To win that one, I think all the work will
be being done now, because I think there was a
they've been together in Auckland this week before they went
to Melbourne.

Speaker 3 (30:42):
I think they.

Speaker 2 (30:42):
Started, don't they come on the first one Melbourne?

Speaker 4 (30:46):
And so I would imagine all the pre work that
they're doing now will be laying the foundation for that
sort of thing. And look, I mean they're a good team.
There's only perhaps a one area of weakness goal attack.
But then Martina Salmon, she looked quite promising, you know
against South Africa. And now of course we've got Amelia

(31:07):
Walmsley coming in. Not a goal attack, but do you
make her a goal let's talk about that goal attack position. Yes,
I'm a no for Warmsley at goal attack. I think
she'll be a great goal shoot. She'd have to improve
a lot with her footwork.

Speaker 2 (31:20):
And her speed and agility for me to be a
goal attack at international level, For me, out of that
tiny Jamison series, you've got to start salmon.

Speaker 6 (31:28):
Yeah.

Speaker 2 (31:28):
She shot eighty percent or above in every quarter she
came on the court. Impressive, She was confident, she had presence.
She was very happy to turn to the post. Hef
played in that first test, did okay, and then wasn't
quite you know, didn't perform as well as she probably
would have in the second, and then didn't even get
on in the third.

Speaker 5 (31:48):
Did she.

Speaker 4 (31:49):
I love the fact that that third Test, when it
was down to the wire, Yeah, and she just shot
the lights, you know, and I thought that was great.

Speaker 2 (31:57):
Well, she made a couple of ears before that, she
got rattled and she dropped the ball. So I'm wrapped
for Martina that she did take that long shot, and
it was a long shot, it was a pressure shot,
it was a long shot. So she will remember that feeling.
She has been in that environment again. And it really
showed to me that she was rattled for a minute,
but she pulled it together. She was calm. I don't

(32:19):
even think it touched the rim and she shot that
one of those fast five ones.

Speaker 6 (32:23):
Yeah.

Speaker 2 (32:24):
I still think you've got to keep Heafen there with.
I don't know, I think who shall start, but I
think heffen And offers something different. She is quicker, isn't she.
She's that little mobile goal attack. I just wonder if
with the Aussie's you give sam and her start, given
she performed in every game in that tiny jamison. I
wonder though, if Warmsley and I've been hearing not that

(32:45):
were listening to rumors, but that she does want to
have a go probably more.

Speaker 4 (32:53):
Do you.

Speaker 2 (32:54):
I don't. I don't think I would give her a
goal on these first two, but for A and Z
next year, you can see why she will want to
have the option of moving out to Golatat because Grace,
potentially she's young, She's going to hold onto that goal. Shoot.
The New Zealand are really long time. So if you're
sensible and I think, yes, she's not there yet at Golatat,

(33:15):
but I think she's could do. She's got the letacism
that she's got there. I mean, she just went to
the World.

Speaker 3 (33:21):
Youth Cup and Warmasey's moving up to the Star.

Speaker 2 (33:23):
So is she to play with Salmon?

Speaker 4 (33:25):
To play with Salmon? So there's an interesting swing those two. Yeah,
I mean Timmy Patter will sort them out.

Speaker 3 (33:30):
I'm sure.

Speaker 2 (33:31):
The other position I guess is that one attack position.
Now we you know, talked about Peter Tooe over this year.
She was our standout wing attack at AINSI Premiership, and
I feel that whenever she gets in the ferns she
doesn't really get a good go. She played half a
game in every Test match, so she hasn't had sixty
minutes yet. I remember, and last year she would get
two quarters and then get taken off. I feel that

(33:53):
they're always experimenting with her, and I just would like
to see her play a whole game so she can
get that familiarity, get that continuity going with players around her,
because I still think she's she's the best swing attack.

Speaker 4 (34:06):
Yeah, well I and I agree with that, but I
think you know, she got big ups ahead of the
South African Test. Vander Irver absolutely.

Speaker 3 (34:16):
Shut her down.

Speaker 4 (34:17):
Agree that name, Yeah, and I just thought, oh, yes,
you can be stopped. But vander Irver is a really,
you know, very fine player. She's played in the UK
League for years and she just looks fierce actually. But
you know, I but I agree with you, so I
don't know. I don't know what they'll do with that
mid court position. And then of course you've got the defense.

Speaker 2 (34:40):
Well, that picks itself. Surely, don't we think that the
defense picks itself. It's got to be jack Jacksonburger Heaf.
And then I guess you've got the option of swinging
Heaf out of wing defense, putting her into the center.
You've got you can switch Maddie back into wing defense
a few a little bit more height in the middle.
Was she at wing defense or was she at senda
when she snatched the will?

Speaker 3 (35:00):
She was defense defense because she'd been off, Yeah.

Speaker 2 (35:07):
Rolled her ankle, yep, came back on. But that that's
the combination for me. You've got to have Maddie Gordon
on the court. I think she's been excellent, So I'd
put her in at center. You'd have Hef Berger, and
you'd have Kate here at wing defence, and then Berger
and Jackson, and then I would still stick with Petter,
even though she did get found out a little in

(35:27):
that last year. Who's the next wing attack if she's
not on, Well, it would be Kimmy, wouldn't it. It
depends if they take me because again, at right now,
we only know fourteen are going. They twenty four hours
before the first test they they drop it down to twelve.
We don't know who those twelve are. You guess you
think that people four shooters, so you're probably gonna lose

(35:48):
a mid quarter and maybe Caras stiff because she's not
played yet. So whether Carris and the likes of Miela
or Kimmy don't make that twelve yes, of course, yeah, yeah,
because Mila and Kimmy, I guess they play both wing
attack and center. Don't know them both for their franchises
and for the fans. I think if you were to

(36:10):
drop either one of those two, maybe for this one,
I just put Poie ahead of really Buchanan. I don't
think she's quite back to her best yet post her
getting her knee done. She was in great form, was
it this series? Last year? She was the starting wing attack,
remember doing going good guns and then it was just
demoralizing when she went down with her knee. So I

(36:32):
think Poi is a good option in that middle, but
yeap Grace at the back for me, and then of
course she's switching Martina and Georgia hefferan interesting Kath talking
about the defense kind of figuring out Grace a little bit,
but I think that works on the reverse too a
little So it's gonna be interesting, isn't that how effective

(36:54):
Grace is going to be and how confident she's going
to be coming up against those ausies, because let's not
we can't hide away from the fact her playing well
will go a long way towards whether the silver ferns
play well or when that's right.

Speaker 4 (37:09):
And of course the other thing, you know, I sort
of asked kath about it. Courtney Bruce is back and
smiling assassin. That's right, and I you know, my stomach
goes quite gelatinous gelassiness today.

Speaker 2 (37:24):
That's why I fact they need to have Peter on
because in Australia they're not used to having a wing
attack that just turns bombs. That'll be you know, that's
the point of difference that we've got in the silver
ferns environment and they've got to play that against the diamonds.

Speaker 4 (37:37):
And more than one person has said, I don't know
that we have an answer for Grace.

Speaker 3 (37:41):
So there you go.

Speaker 2 (37:43):
So can the silver ferns win this Constellation Cup with
all the noise, all that they've had to cope with
fact that they're not best buddies and they do us
can they do. We genuinely think they can win this
Constellation Cup with everything that's happened in the last Lisa

(38:03):
it's six months, because we've had franchises, who what broadcasting deals,
players crossing the Tasman like. There's been more than just
the coaching. I wonder if all that could could just
come into play a little bit now, that that fatigue
or that outside evil noise. It's hard enough playing Australia
at the best of times when you're a well united

(38:24):
you've got you know, the backing of everybody in your organization.
I still think they've got a good chance of winning
the series. I just wonder if that mental fatigue could
hit them towards the end of the series.

Speaker 4 (38:37):
Yeah, I mean, look, I'm an optimist. I just think,
you know, take it one game at a time, and
there's no reason player for player. I just my mind
goes back to you know, Kelly Jackson getting in the
you know, Kira Austin just going missing. And I noticed
some of the Kara Conan in the South African series missing.

Speaker 3 (38:59):
So you know, they are fallible they're just do.

Speaker 6 (39:02):
And the.

Speaker 2 (39:06):
Five times they played last year, the winning average has
been eleven. Train of the days where whenever we played
Australia Australia, it was like, oh my god, it's going
to be close, it's going to be within five. You know,
when these teams are going out there, they are playing
with purpose and coming away with big wins. Of course,
the Diamonds you're only ever remembered by your last performance,
and they beat us by thirteen in that last Constellation Cup.

(39:29):
But as you say, we won the three previous gen I.

Speaker 4 (39:32):
Think we kind of subconsciously knew that we had it
in the back five of three.

Speaker 2 (39:36):
We won last year against the Diamonds. But I think
that's the thing, and that's the interesting thing about this
new rule. If there is a few blowouts, you've still
got a chance. So if the Silver Fans go over
and get beaten by Australia, they've got still every chance
of winning the competition. But coming back winning in New
Zealand and then I mean that would be the ultimate,
wouldn't it to go into extra.

Speaker 3 (39:59):
You want to get this, I think something.

Speaker 2 (40:00):
There's some special here for series decider time, and well
I would that's what I'm going to go. If I
was a fishing person, I would go for series decided time,
the silver ferns and extra extra overtime that are because
you're doing I don't maybe I've change your mind, but look,
I really appreciate your time.

Speaker 6 (40:22):
Ladies.

Speaker 2 (40:22):
