Speaker 1 (00:01):
Inside Netball getting you closer to the game you love
with Nadine Wilson, Anna Stanley and Jenny Woods sow By
News Talks that'd be Gouda.

Speaker 2 (00:09):
And welcome to Inside Netball.

Speaker 3 (00:11):
The Silverns have locked away the Tiny Jams and Trophy
for another year and the New Zealand under twenty one
team have secured a Coredit final spot and the World
Youth Cup that has been played tonight that's Thursday night
at eleven pm, so make sure you watch that.

Speaker 2 (00:29):
They have gone through pool play unbeaten.

Speaker 3 (00:33):
So doing really well our under twenty ones at the
World Youth Cup. But first and foremost my toe guest
today Jenny Woods Evon Willering. Let's talk the Ferns game
against South Africa. In fact, we need to talk about
two games because we have not had episodes since.

Speaker 2 (00:52):
Leading up to game one. What have we made of it? Eyvon,
give us, I know you're just.

Speaker 3 (00:57):
Dying to tell us and come on in South Africa
are pretty good?

Speaker 1 (01:01):
Come on, well, it's really funny. Their coach Jenny von Dake.
She is such a positive person and she believes in
dreaming big and it's probably in South African mentality whereas
I probably am a little bit more realistic. So after
the first test, absolutely they were going to improve. Absolutely,
but what was what a difference in the first quarter

(01:24):
from the first Test and the first quarter in the
second first test Ferns twenty to eight. And then you
get to the second Test and suddenly South Africa fifteen fourteen,
and I bet you everything that then people started saying, hey,
this is going to be an interesting game. And yes,
the Ferns got it together in parts, but again what
the last quarter only seventeen sixteen to the Ferns, So

(01:46):
she will take heart from that and she will say
look out tests three.

Speaker 4 (01:51):
Well, yes, I mean I must admit I had a
few anxious times in my home on the North Shore
during that first quarter because I just thought, oh, jeepers,
you know, perhaps they were jet lagged in that first test.
Perhaps this perhaps that you know, fourteen fifteen South Africa
won it. But then normal transmission was resumed and there

(02:15):
was one change made by New Zealand.

Speaker 5 (02:17):
Georgia Heffernan came off.

Speaker 4 (02:19):
Martina Salmon went on what a difference she made, and
I think you know, from then on it was big
scores came back. So you know, I was starting to
feel quite good after that, but I thought, this is
a competition.

Speaker 6 (02:34):
Actually, what did you think, Evonne?

Speaker 1 (02:36):
Yeah, I was initially disappointed the fact that there was
going to be the two Java Grace and a Wiki show.
And if you have a look at it again, Grace,
what's sixty out of sixty eight? And yes, when she
misses and you alluded to it, she gets the rebound,
so that's pretty fortunate, so it doesn't matter if she misses.
But what I loved is when Martina Salmon came on,

(02:56):
she played what I call a goal attack role. She
took shots as well, whereas the others are not taking
the shots, it is totally left to Grace and Wiki.
But she got nine out of eleven. And what I
love about her play is that when she takes the
ball rather than looking for the feed into Grace and
Awiki and she goes, I can do this, and she's
very confident in her shot.

Speaker 6 (03:16):
But isn't that the job of the goal attack?

Speaker 5 (03:18):
Absolutely?

Speaker 3 (03:20):
So how can you be disappointed? It wasn't the Grayson
until the other show. That's a pretty good show.

Speaker 1 (03:26):
Yes it is, but you know I understand that, but
you know, just to put the big bombs in. I
think it is more than that, absolutely, and I'm not
taking anything away from Grayson WICKI, you know, tremendous elevation,
but they are all close shots and you're going, well,
she can't take them, absolutely because she doesn't need to
take long shots because she stands underneath the post. Understand that,

(03:47):
And then I'm going, Okay, remember the last World Champ
since she was not available. But then I remembered World
Youth Cup. We've got Warmesty still in the picture for
the Constellation Cup. So I will wait until Constellation Cup
comes along to see exactly where we stand.

Speaker 5 (04:02):
My concern is one.

Speaker 1 (04:04):
Time, and at the moment, the two South Africans had
no match against Grace and Wiki at all. They stood
by her and had no show right, but there could
be a time when she could be double marked and
could really it could be a physical encounter. So then
our goal attacks have to step up, and Samon certainly.

Speaker 5 (04:23):
Is stepping up.

Speaker 1 (04:24):
Just saying that, well, I found interesting and maybe I
shouldn't say it, but I don't understand why the South
Africans didn't do the lift as the past comes into
Grace Norwiki because they were both in the circle and
that way, at least it would force New Zealand into
starting offloading to the goal attack.

Speaker 4 (04:40):
Well, I wonder if they didn't do the lift because
when we Adean, you were there, Anna Adean and I
had a drink with Zaneliam Dourdana the other day and
she was telling us about they did a lift.

Speaker 5 (04:52):
On the edge of the circle.

Speaker 6 (04:53):
I couldn't quite work out why they were doing.

Speaker 2 (04:55):
It a super shot because of the super shot they.

Speaker 3 (04:58):
Did stop the two point shot.

Speaker 4 (05:01):
Anyway, they dropped her and she was did our acl
did everything so that they might be a bit wary
of the of the lift.

Speaker 3 (05:11):
And as soon as you do the lift right, that's
two people out of play. So that's when you would
hope that that goal attack would then cut in and
roll the top and get that nice little in and out.
But I one hundred cent agree with you Evon that
I've been critical when a goal attack is not taking shots,
and so I'm one hundred cent with you. It is
fabulous to see her confident to take them. We know

(05:32):
she's just confident with the long shot. That's why we've
often talked about her and.

Speaker 2 (05:36):
Saw in A and S.

Speaker 3 (05:38):
She was brought on for that purpose to shoot that
two point shot.

Speaker 2 (05:42):
And you're entirely right. Unless these players are shooting in
a silver fern and international environment, they if they don't
practice it and one day, Grace, you know, as we
saw in the World Cup a few years ago, goodness
of bid touch would got injured.

Speaker 3 (05:58):
We need them to be confident in the international environment
and not be scared of shooting and putting that out.
And that's why one hundred percent agree with you. I
think Martine Salmon has been has been brilliant. I mean
we had one change from Test one to Test two.
There was no Kate Heathen in.

Speaker 2 (06:15):
She was out.

Speaker 3 (06:17):
Unwell, what do we make of the new the new
look mid court. I mean, it's been a while since
we've seen Miela Rulu Buchanan on the court.

Speaker 2 (06:25):
She started for the Silver Furs Gem.

Speaker 4 (06:27):
Yeah, I thought she may well have been the player
that I would have changed, and I might have done
it a little bit earlier. Well you could only go
one quarter earlier. But look, she was, she was fine.
I don't think I must have been unlike you. I
and I'm looking at Yvonne. I mean I love the

(06:50):
you know, Peter Grace combination because you never know what
Peter is going to do.

Speaker 5 (06:56):
And you know, I'm a I'm a humble netball fan.
I love that.

Speaker 4 (07:01):
I love that not knowing what's coming. So but let's
go back to wiki for a moment. I mean, I can't.
I am surprised. You say she's a bit of a
one trick pony. I mean I saw her coming, so
farn we've had only two tests.

Speaker 5 (07:15):
She came a long way out and.

Speaker 4 (07:16):
She she jumps, I mean she was a high jumper,
and she's got all sorts of tricks to a bow.

Speaker 5 (07:23):
And then we come back to this.

Speaker 4 (07:25):
So many people ask me who is the better player,
Irene Van Dyke or Grace, And I mean I always say, well, look,
I don't think you can compare.

Speaker 6 (07:34):
But it's a hard one.

Speaker 5 (07:36):
Yeah, I don't think you can compare. And then you've
also got moving shooters.

Speaker 1 (07:40):
You can go right back to Donna Wilkins for inces,
and you can go to the two Margarets and Marguie
Mantaguna and marg Forsyth.

Speaker 5 (07:46):
Wow, that combination was so hard to beat.

Speaker 1 (07:49):
And also there was a lot of structure to it,
you know, and that yeah, so there's iron from they
got better I think in her play, in the fact that.

Speaker 5 (07:56):
She started to start shooting longer.

Speaker 1 (07:58):
She had this beautiful split, absolutely, but she started taking
longer shots as well. In the game she had a whole,
she had a turn, and those are things that that maybe,
you know, it's still got to come in Grace's game.
But if I ask you, what difference has the Sun
Corp made to her game apart from confidence, and certainly
she's much stronger in a play, absolutely, but you know,

(08:21):
she's what else has come to a game now? Not
knocking her, She's got tremendous elevation. Listen, I'd wonder her
and my team any day, absolutely, but I also would
like to see much more more of different structures. For instance,
in the South African Boy, the van Berg and the Meseco,
that combination it was brilliant, you know, and they both

(08:42):
took shots from the bank got forty four out of
forty seven. I thought that was pretty good stuff, you know,
considering that they had obviously some of the best defenders
in the world against them, and Masko she got fourteen
out of nineteen. So they complimented each other well. And
they also did a lot of circle mod movement whereas
in the New Zealand style, if we're in any trouble

(09:04):
at all, the bombing to Grace ninety nine percent of
the time she is going to get it. Give a
credit for that, absolutely, But I just don't want us
to just be that one dimensional.

Speaker 3 (09:16):
Well, you know, one of the best circles I used
to love watching was any circle that Sherrel McMahon was it.

Speaker 2 (09:23):
You know, she knew how to play that moving circle.

Speaker 3 (09:26):
Her and cath Cox or whoever the combination was with her,
and you're right, fabulous to watch, fabulous nickel skills.

Speaker 2 (09:32):
But I also, as a former wing attack.

Speaker 3 (09:34):
Love and get out of jail free card, which Irene
was mine, and Grace is certainly for the mid court
for the silver Ferns. Currently, let's talk a little bit
more about that court. Maddie Gordon. I've been loving her
at center. I think she's just you know, she's playing
some great netball. You know, once upon a time I
was a little bit wary about her feeding skills. I

(09:57):
thought of her more of a center wing defense. To me,
She's said those worries. I think you know, she has
thread that needle at times into the circle to your
pointing on mixing it up, not just putting the lobbyin.
And she is used to that hype though, because she's
got all she has had until won't be next year
Amelia Warmsley and her side.

Speaker 2 (10:16):
So has she impressed the two of you? Yeah?

Speaker 4 (10:19):
She has mine me rather, but then she is from
you know, Northland Stock.

Speaker 2 (10:26):
Good biased?

Speaker 6 (10:26):
Yeah, no I am, I'm horribly biased, but no, I
thought she was good.

Speaker 4 (10:30):
And what I was thinking about too last night was
you know, this is a team where there was no
Kate Heffernan, and I am a huge Kate Heffenan fan,
mainly because I was a real fan of their mothers.

Speaker 5 (10:43):
Did you like her at wing defense where you prefer it?

Speaker 4 (10:46):
I like the wing defense there, but look, I'm not
particularly fussy, but.

Speaker 1 (10:53):
Yeah, I like the midquarter absolutely, whatever combination goes on.
I think it's got speed, agility and also defense. They
are getting quality more and certainly Kate Hefflin's very much
part of that in my opinion. Like Karen Karen Berger,
I like could probably better as a goal offense and
as a wing defense, but like you know, I'm happy
for her to be in either of those two positions

(11:14):
at the moment. But I think a strength certainly is
in combination with Jackson in the back. But yeah, I
love our mid court and if you have strength there,
you know, it's always going to do you well. Really,
and I know that Grace is saying, you know, it's
about everyone else, and to be fair, it's got to
be decent passes into her as well to make sure
obviously it gets to her, you know. And there were

(11:37):
a few wayward passes in that first quarter. I don't
know if they were trying to do something different in
the fact they were looking across the court a little
bit rather than down the court, and whatever they were trying, well,
I could say it probably didn't work because they lost
that quarter. They would not have wanted that. That would hurt,
you know. So yeah, it's going to be really interesting

(11:57):
to see what Game three brings.

Speaker 2 (12:00):
So do we think looking at Game three?

Speaker 3 (12:02):
We haven't got to the defense yet, but let's just
close off the mid court and the shooting. Are we
thinking if we were picking our strongest midi shooters so
far combinations Wiki Salmon Toyava, then put Gordon in the middle.

Speaker 2 (12:19):
And then Heaven and Wan defense. But that would that
be what you two would.

Speaker 1 (12:22):
Start absolutely, because that gives variety in that circle. Absolutely,
that's the way we'll go. And it wouldn't and I'm
sorry I've gone back to it again. It wouldn't just
be the two Java Grayson Wiki combination. And it's a
strong combination. I'm not being negative there, but we need
to have variety. And that's my concern. If you talk
about the New Zealand style at the moment, is put

(12:44):
the bomb into Grayson Wiki.

Speaker 4 (12:47):
Yes, but I still remember and I taste them sick
feeling in my stomach that I had in Cape Town
all those years ago when we'd heard that wiki was
out for the tournament and I just thought, oh my goodness, me,
we're gone.

Speaker 5 (13:02):
I think now that.

Speaker 4 (13:03):
We've secured the tiny Jamison, we have to start, perhaps
or perhaps not start, but get get a start and
take wiky off. I mean, we've got to play without
Grace Wiki.

Speaker 5 (13:16):
Yeah, but.

Speaker 3 (13:18):
Yeah, is that what you would do if Amelia Warmseley
was there.

Speaker 2 (13:24):
It's a little bit harder when it's Vuie Salmon.

Speaker 5 (13:28):
And they wouldn't do it, would you not? Would you?

Speaker 6 (13:31):
What about we've seen what's have some faith?

Speaker 3 (13:36):
No, let's talk about defense, because you love the defense
we're promising the least amount of changes in the defense end.
Kelly Jackson been on fire, Carten Burger Test one outstanding.
We've seen Paris Mason, She's slipped across into winged gold
offense at times. We saw a brief appearance from Catherine
Hall in Test one. They have they got your pass,

(14:00):
Mike Evan, I know this is your sweet spot, your
offensive sust.

Speaker 5 (14:04):
No, not at the moment. And don't forget.

Speaker 1 (14:06):
The only player that's still to come into the equation,
into the twelve rather than fourteen is Stithe and I
think you'll see her in the third test. She hasn't
actually made an appearance in the twelve, So why would
to carry fourteen and not put her in some capacity?

Speaker 2 (14:20):
So how do you take out if you bring her in?

Speaker 1 (14:24):
Yeah, and see now I was going to say, well,
probably Mason. And the reason for that is because I
want to see Hall in a precious situation. I don't
think that was her best game. God, I appreciate it
was the first time out of court in a black dress.
I would like to see more of her. I really
rate her. I think that she is absolutely a goalkeeper

(14:44):
in the future. I know they looked at her as
a goal offense as well, but I like her as
a goalkeeper and you know, with Karen Berger there, I
just don't think that we saw enough of that combination
and I'd like to see her back out on court.

Speaker 5 (14:58):
And that's why I would retain her for the Third Test.

Speaker 1 (15:01):
Having said that New Zealand will want to win, and
they will want to win, well.

Speaker 4 (15:07):
Yeah, I know, I think you're right, because I mean,
let's not forget I mean, we haven't actually even touched
on the South African team.

Speaker 5 (15:13):
This is a good team.

Speaker 6 (15:16):
And look I met I think I said it earlier.
This they were so much better than they were.

Speaker 5 (15:22):

Speaker 6 (15:23):
Oh no, it wasn't a week was it. It was a
few days ago.

Speaker 4 (15:26):
But that el Mare Vanderberg, I mean, because I sort
of I couldn't believe they didn't start her on Sunday
night and then she showed her true colors. I mean,
what did she get forty four from forty seven? You know, brilliant.

Speaker 1 (15:41):
I think part of that is also Stroker, who started
in that first Test, has long shots, and she's very
good on the long shot until Kelly Jackson made note
of that and she started actually jumping the shot and
it really put her off and there were a number
of times that Kelly got tips from that and she
went off a game and that's when from Enbach came

(16:03):
into it. So I guess initially they wanted to see
whether they had a long a long distance you know,
like four five feet shooter in there.

Speaker 5 (16:12):
But yeah, from about it is the more experience.

Speaker 1 (16:14):
She's only one ninety one centimeters, but she is one
of the most experienced players. I think.

Speaker 5 (16:19):
Hasn't she got a some corpse super League contry.

Speaker 4 (16:22):
I think she's going to add a lade same thunderbits. Yeah,
but I also thought I do hope Chijuane the captain.
She seems to have more tape on each time she
comes out.

Speaker 5 (16:37):
But I hope she gets.

Speaker 4 (16:38):
Out there on Sunday because that's that will be her
one hundredth game. And she's always impressed me every time
I've seen her. And the other player who has caught
my eye is that Jamie Van Fake, who again I
don't think they started her in the first test, and then.

Speaker 2 (16:57):
She played sixty minutes and testing.

Speaker 5 (16:59):
Yeah, and I thought this one, yeah, I thought, oh
you're good, yeah, yeah.

Speaker 1 (17:04):
And the first test was what Psmith and I think
it was and from they she did come on into
wing defense at some stage year, and that's a situation
that they've just got to adjust their defensive thing. Initially,
in the first test they actually came out for some
nice intercepts and I'm going, you're being smart here, take
the ball early, not wait for it to get to

(17:25):
its destinations, so to speak. But they went back into
the encircle and probably the South African style is more
one on one, whereas they need to now learn to
adapt and change it up. And my concern with them,
and you're right, they're having more and more tape. Don't
forget they've got Australia after us, So good luck.

Speaker 5 (17:44):
I know, I know that.

Speaker 6 (17:46):
Are they two tests three?

Speaker 5 (17:47):
Tests three?

Speaker 3 (17:49):
I think you right there as well. Yeah, oh look,
there's no doubt. It was great to see them put
up a fight. But you know, we've had eight quarters
and the Silburns won seven of those eight. So the
Silver Fans are certainly dominated good setters Afghans. They did,
you know, they fought again in that last quarter. It

(18:09):
was seventeen sixteen in Tests two.

Speaker 2 (18:12):
So while we.

Speaker 3 (18:13):
Love to see the Silver Fans go well, we also
like to see them push to make a great game
of it. So here's hoping we have a tight last test.
But we see a lot of success from our silver ferns.

Speaker 5 (18:25):
Inside that Ball the Inside Netball podcast.

Speaker 3 (18:30):
Talking about success under twenty ones that've been pretty successful
so far, making the quarterfinals playing Milawi, I mean their
last game though.

Speaker 2 (18:40):
They won.

Speaker 3 (18:42):
Ninety five eight, so I mean there's some hugely one
side of matches. And Jen, there's been quite a bit
of controversy for this World Youth Cup.

Speaker 2 (18:51):
There's been teams that haven't even made it.

Speaker 5 (18:53):
Well that's right to Dan.

Speaker 4 (18:55):
I mean it saddens me really because it's Zambia and
Sri Lanka. I don't know if they didn't know they
weren't coming or whatever, but I just think it just
looks so unprofessional. They didn't have I think there was
no visas or you know, the red tape hadn't been
ticked off, and I mean we've laid into Jamaica a

(19:17):
couple of years ago because they didn't get their visas
to come here. And I think, you know, we have
to be well, we have to follow the same line.
I mean, you know, the controversy has come in Gibraltar
because they've had to sort of re massage the drawer
and you've had to, you know, change things around a

(19:40):
little bit with the points. But this is Netbull's problem,
isn't it. They need they need money. We say this
every time we need money.

Speaker 1 (19:48):
And what's interesting though, is that what they did is
the teams they were due to play against them, So
two of the pools, it was a situation they were
just allocated two points.

Speaker 5 (19:57):
Now the other pool two pools to.

Speaker 1 (19:59):
Say, hey, that's actually very unfair because we have to
work hard to get our two points in the matches. Luckily,
if you have a look at it and each of
the pools, those two teams they would have lost anyway.
So you know, it wasn't like the teams that are
getting the two points weren't going to get those two
points anyway. So yeah, it's an interesting situation. And I

(20:22):
said that before. It's going to be interesting with the
World champs we're having that every two years. Our team's
going to front up to that, and I'm going to
say again it's going to be a funding issue, and
I don't believe that everyone can afford to attend a
World Championship every two years.

Speaker 3 (20:39):
You're right, and I think we're seeing it, and the
conversation has already started. I think with AMZ players going
to the Australian League, you're starting to see it's like
we see in American sports, right people put the NBA
first as opposed to playing for their country, you know,
is that the way the sports are going. When you're
having to make decisions around money, it makes it very

(21:01):
hard for some of these nations to afford to go
to these big events. Yet they're getting a huge amount
of benefit if their players are going and playing in
some of these key tournaments where it be the Super
League in England, here in New Zealand and Australia. So
the world is changing for netball and it's going to
be fascinating to watch over the next couple of years

(21:22):
to see where it goes. And what's also been fascinating
to watch and listen and hear is it's still bubbling
away in the background.

Speaker 2 (21:31):
There's still chat.

Speaker 3 (21:32):
About Dane Noline and once upon a time, Only once
upon a time. It's only like fourteen days ago, but
it feels like six months.

Speaker 2 (21:40):
You know.

Speaker 3 (21:40):
Everyone thought it was like there's no way she will
never come back. You know, there's been too much hurt
from every side, but we are now starting to hear
there is a door potentially open she could come back.
This is just speculation, but there is some fairly significant

(22:03):
communications that has gone out there. We saw today Brownie Aikel,
who has coached with Dave Nolene, has come out in
the media and said Noles wants.

Speaker 2 (22:13):
To be back there. So Ivan wants what's your take
on all this?

Speaker 1 (22:17):
Yeah, and it's interesting it's finally come out, not that
she's saying everything, but certainly saying that, you know, it's
a situation that she wants to be back out there.
Not only she said, I've actually been talking with Nols
and not about the ins and outs of it, but yeah,
and in spite of everything that's happened, she is still
very keen and enthusiastic about keeping the role of the

(22:38):
Silver Funds coach. And also that she is actually ready,
well not ready she was before anyway, but just to
try to resolve the problems at hand and see if
they can come obviously to some understanding moving forward. And yeah,
I think a lot of us says, you know, who
needs this in your life? But you know, she just
She's got a lot of the work for these Silver Ferns.

(22:59):
Don't forget, she's already looking forward to the Calm Games
and so suddenly that has been taken away from her.
And yet you know, she stays very loyal to those
Ferns and to what they're trying to achieve.

Speaker 4 (23:11):
You know, I was impressed actually by how many of
the Ferns actually said, well implied, we did this for
her and I you know, and they said, you know, look,
we hope she's proud of us. And I wondered when
I was watching those games, you know, how how much
of it was, you know, Nolan's plans, Nolan's game plans,
and I you know, you're not going to have well,

(23:34):
I think Evett McCall's and Drury and Leana Liota, I
don't know what their plans are after this. I think
McCall's and Drury has said she's you know, she's got
a school to run.

Speaker 1 (23:46):
Yeah, yeah, I heard they certainly they they have asked
again to be on standby for Constellation Cup and I'm going, oh,
surely something can be resolved before then. Although having said that, boy,
this has gone right back to you know, and you
look at it, and there's a lot of damage being done.
People have been hurt in this whole situation. We've also

(24:06):
got extra stuff going down with Neple New Zealand, you know,
And I look at it and I'm going, why are
we discussing this? Why was this not done behind closed doors?
And I'm really sad that it's got to this situation,
And I just hope that it can be resolved and
everyone can move forward. But don't tick it off, like
it's not about just moving forward saying, hey, we've won

(24:27):
the Tiny Jamison Trophy, aren't we clever? And moving on,
because again, it's a situation where, yeah, a lot of
people have been involved in this.

Speaker 3 (24:35):
And I think to me, the fact that Noline signaling
to yourself and to other coaches that she is keen
to be back involved, I think that also shows that
some of the speculation around the complete breakdown between her
connection with some of the posts, it's just not true.
And that has been you know, it's been in the
media and these things have been blown up and there's

(24:57):
been so much speculation. There's obviously a level of respect
and love still between the players and Noline, and so
I do like you really hope that this process now
can be expediated and a decision is made for everyone.

(25:18):
It's not fear on everyone involved that this gets dragged
out because it's pulled on the heartstrings for everyone.

Speaker 2 (25:25):
But I think that's why.

Speaker 3 (25:26):
And I saw it, and Gen you saw it too,
you know, I don't think I saw you at Test one,
but that pure relief on the face of not only
the Ferns but everyone around, and that supports us around
that Ferns after Test one because they came out and
they showed their resilience in that first quarter. And I think, yes,

(25:47):
part of it may have been out of respect for
Knols to say, look, this is what we can do.

Speaker 2 (25:52):
But I think also a huge.

Speaker 3 (25:54):
Amount of respect has to go to event, right, Like
I just think the way she's been able to go
ied this team, and it may not come down to
game plans, it may have come from before, but she
has been able to help this team overcome gim this
massive hurdle as we know, we would have been so
emotional for everyone.

Speaker 2 (26:13):
Yes, they came out and they performed anyway.

Speaker 4 (26:15):
Yeah, No, that's right, Oh absolutely, And I also think too,
not just well mainly Evet, but you know, Tracy Fear,
Darren Shann all that group that were in there with them,
because you know at.

Speaker 5 (26:30):
Oh, and I totally agree with you, only not a
problem that I have yet.

Speaker 1 (26:34):
The players have got a lot of support, The Silver
Ferns a total unit, have got a lot of support.
And here's Noline sitting at home and then I go,
you know, where's her support? We have a players Association,
which is brilliant to have that for the players. What
have we got for the coaches? And I think that
is where we are found wanting because she is very
much in isolation and you know, she's in a situation

(26:56):
she can't discuss a lot what's happening because obviously it's
going through a process and I'm going that that's where
the hurt comes as well. So yeah, and it's also
just the whole the prime now sport. You know this,
it's being damaged, and it's it's not being damaged behind
closed doors, it's right there out in the open, you know.
So yeah, and like you and Deine, I just want

(27:19):
to resolve and let's just you know, work together and
don't let this happen again. It's happened in the past,
don't courage yourself. It has you know, have we learned
from it? Well, no, probably not. And this is about
open communication, isn't it. Somewhere along the line there is
not open communication and honesty without the parties involved.

Speaker 3 (27:40):
I think your point about the coaches, you know, association
with something alike. We talked about that couple of weeks ago,
exactly to your point. And I know coaches have tried
to create a coach associates, you create that support around them,
but as everything happens comes down to money, right, who's
going to run it, who's going to pull it together?
So it often ends up relying on coaches and the

(28:01):
support networks like yourself, speaking with other coaches and cross codes,
which is, like I said, it's kind of unfair. It'd
be nice to think there was something that sports could
come together and support their coaches so they do have
the support because we're not the only sport that.

Speaker 2 (28:16):
This has happened to.

Speaker 3 (28:17):
Yes, it's been a unique situation how it's played out
in the media, but every sport at different times have
had a coach that's been under pressure and no doubt
feel isolated. So to your point and your other one,
everywhere I go I'm down at basketball secondary school nationals.
Everyone wants to talk to me about Netbull. I've more
so than I've ever talked about netble in my life.

(28:39):
I feel like because of the media coverage it's had
and for not the best reasons.

Speaker 2 (28:45):
So I'm with you.

Speaker 3 (28:46):
Here's hoping pride in our sport, and I think we can.
I think we can turn it. I think there's some
good signaling coming. But Jen, there's no doubt you and
I we almost sleepless notes. I don't know, but we've
had a few while I'm worrying about all of this.

Speaker 4 (29:01):
Well, yes, and I mean I think too. The fact
is it's because it's Knowles. I mean, she's a legend.

Speaker 2 (29:06):
I mean the.

Speaker 4 (29:08):
Everywhere I go, as you say, and I'm certainly not
a former player, but I'm a commentator and they all
want to know. What I think was this was that
you know the other And I mean I don't know much,
but you know, all I can say is, well, let's
hope it gets sorted and sorted quickly.

Speaker 1 (29:27):
But what gets me it started in January and yet
like I was going to their camp a few weeks ago,
right prior to the tiny Jamison and I rang Knowles
and said, what time are you training tomorrow? And that's
the first time I heard no, No, you won't be
required because we haven't got a team. You know, I'm going,
what and I'm going to to taken this along for

(29:49):
this I found it interesting in the article that Brioni
said she talks about environment and how often have we
heard this word environment being you know, labeled with of
the Knowles as well, and she was quote like, she said,
there will always be tension and that's high performance, and
that's true.

Speaker 5 (30:09):
You know, if.

Speaker 1 (30:09):
Everything is sweet ass and everything's haha and we're happy camp,
then you look at it and I'm going, you know,
we're intensity exactly. I'm not saying you've got to have
your lows, but somewhere on the lines, you will always
have highs and lows in any high performance competition.

Speaker 3 (30:26):
She said, there's that tension though, isn't there that Yes,
there's the highs and lows. But the reality is a
quote that they are human. You've got feelings, and so
that is that fine line that you're walking and everybody's
feelings and everyone's responses to things are different, and there's
no doubt we are seeing different generations coming through that

(30:47):
their responses can be different as well. So you know,
it's just the reality of of the world.

Speaker 2 (30:54):
The world that there's also been exhausting us too. Oh
my goodness, conversation.

Speaker 5 (30:59):
Yes, Lordie.

Speaker 2 (31:02):
Well look, let's just last test is on Sunday. It's
An and the Cargo.

Speaker 3 (31:07):
If there's one thing you'd like to see from the
Silver Ferns from that test, what would it be? A
change up in that shooting circle Gene you talked about.

Speaker 6 (31:23):
Yeah, I think they have to play without wiki and.

Speaker 5 (31:25):
Just seeing.

Speaker 6 (31:28):
See if they can.

Speaker 4 (31:29):
I mean, otherwise we go to risk going out and
they're having it done to us again.

Speaker 1 (31:34):
No, I disagree with that and the reason and I
know us having a go before about not just putting
in the long bomb. Appreciate that is this the time
to do that? No, appreciate And I never initially thought
it along the lines. But we've got Warmsley there as
well as another tall shooter, and the two of them
will be selected and if they're both performing at the

(31:54):
highest level, they will both go through constellation ackers.

Speaker 5 (31:58):
No goal shoot, I wouldn't play as a goal attack.

Speaker 2 (32:02):
I guess she's going to want to be this year.

Speaker 1 (32:04):
Yeah, if she wants to me out on court. But
that's also why Salmon is now going to play for
the Stars, because she's going to be guaranteed to be
playing goal attack, appreciating she's going to be playing with
Wormsley as well, and Warmsley will be the goal shooter.
So yeah, at the moment, we actually need a goal
attack and this is where we're looking at and at

(32:24):
the moment like, yes, absolutely if we named Salmon, but
we need another goal attack as well. Is it a voie?
Is it a hefenon? And that's what we also need
to challenge. So I have no problems with them in
the third Test. Also doing different combinations substitutions. Probably in
a realistic test match you would not make so many substitutions.

(32:45):
You would go through with the main lineup. But I
would still like to see some variety there. Well that's
more than one word, isn't it? A bit of variety
and your consistency. But also reduce the number of penalties.
I still think they're a bit too high, and that's
just adjusting to the umpires and you're talking about obviously
from the ferns at the moment.

Speaker 2 (33:06):
Yeah, and look what I would love as well.

Speaker 3 (33:08):
Is back to your point a bit earlier, Yvonne is,
I would probably take Mason out, not because she hasn't
done a great job, but just gives that opportunity for
start to come in and Catherine Hall another opportunity to
get on court. But I really appreciate your time as
always very well thought through, very informative comments. I'm sure

(33:32):
there'll be many people rewinding different bits of this podcast
saying why.

Speaker 2 (33:36):
Don't you say that that's a good point, So thank
you very much. Here, let's go for sil Ferns.

Speaker 3 (33:41):
That's on Sunday at seven forty is Center Pass make
sure you chune in until next week.
