À l'automne de 1973, une vague d'apparitions d'OVNIS déferle sur les États-Unis. Il ne se passe pas une seule journée sans que la presse ne parle de ces mystérieuses « soucoupes volantes ». Dans la soirée du 11 octobre, Charles Hickson et Calvin Parker se retrouvent sur les berges de la rivière Pascagoula (Mississippi) pour y taquiner le poisson. Vers 20 h, un objet en forme de ballon de football s'approche d'eux à faible altitude. Dans l'obscurité naissante, les hommes pensent d'abord à une voiture de police. Ils ont tort. Charles Hickson et Calvin Parker sont à la veille de vivre un cauchemar sans nom, une rencontre du 4ème type aux mains de créatures que d'aucuns n'hésitent pas à qualifier d'extraterrestres.
