Le 21 août 1955, à Hopkinsville, au Kentucky, la famille Sutton se retrouve parachutée dans une aventure digne d'un western à la John Wayne. Pendant des heures, la ferme est assiégée par une poignée de gnomes luminescents. Retranchés dans la maison, les hommes tentent de défendre femmes et enfants en tirant sur ces créatures cauchemardesques. Les assiégés ont beau faire feu sur ces lutins d'outre-monde, les envahisseurs semblent invulnérables. Les balles ricochent sur leur cuirasse sans effet. Entre deux assauts, les Sutton réussissent à s'enfuir et gagnent le poste de police d'Hopkinsville.
