Speaker 1 (00:01):
He played sixteen years in the NFL, his final season
as a Carolina Panther, and he has stuck around ever
since as a great broadcaster with us and our great
friends Eugene Robinson.

Speaker 2 (00:09):
We speak qu today thirty seasons of Panther Football, a
celebration of the players, coaches, and other key figures who've
contributed to the organizational success.

Speaker 3 (00:22):
You Gene, I've been looking forward to this one.

Speaker 1 (00:25):
Talking talking to you is easy because we get to
talk every week and one form or another, whether it's
Panther Talk, postgame show, all around these ball games as well.
But I mentioned off the top, sixteen years in the NFL,
your last season was as a Carolina Panther, broadcast with
us ever since two thousand and two, whether it's in
the booth or doing all the other shows we talk about,

(00:45):
and we're gonna talk about your TV work and some
of that other stuff as well. But man, what end
of your career you come here and you just never leave?
Did you love it that much? Or how did you
end up? This was not a place that you really
had in association with prior to that.

Speaker 4 (00:57):
No, not at all.

Speaker 5 (00:57):
Not tell Who made it really easy for me was
mister Richardson. He made it really easy for me because
he selected me to go ahead and kind of replace
the guy who got hurt. And from that, he's always
liked me for whatever reason, and everybody likes so so
big had.

Speaker 4 (01:15):
Always liked me.

Speaker 5 (01:16):
And and then when I was doing some work from
freelance work with radio in two thousand and one, the
job came open in two thousand and two, h Gabriel
was getting ready to Gabriel Yeah, and so I ended
up I ended up applying for the job, and lo
and behold, I stuck around for a very long time.

Speaker 4 (01:36):
Thank you.

Speaker 1 (01:36):
David LinkedIn the broadcast history.

Speaker 3 (01:42):
Well, you don't.

Speaker 1 (01:42):
When you go places, you stick around a long time.
I said, you played for a long time and when
you were when you were playing, was that something you
kind of had an eye towards it? Do you kind
of dallying that a little bit as far as the
broadcasting part throughout your career and looking at that as
being a future.

Speaker 4 (01:55):
Yeah?

Speaker 5 (01:56):
Absolutely, because I was talking to what was the what's
the what is the defensive back? He played with the
Patriots and they end up with the Raiders for a
very long time, played alongside to do with the sticky fingers,
sticky hands the other side. On the other side, it

(02:16):
was I forget his name, and this Rick Tard, uh
defensive back, cornerback.

Speaker 4 (02:23):
It's gonna it's gonna come to me. Well anyway, figure
it out.

Speaker 5 (02:27):
Anyway, when he had finished playing, I had I saw
him at a game get ready for the Raiders. Uh,
when I was playing for Seattle and I was coming out.
Almost called his name and I was was coming out.
I was like, oh, you're doing radio. I said, tell me,
what's the secret? He said, make sure you transition. Make
sure when you're done playing football, you're able to transition
into something else.

Speaker 4 (02:47):
It wasn't no, it wasn't no. This is this.

Speaker 1 (02:51):
Should be our podcast the Raider that they also played.

Speaker 5 (02:55):
For the Carol He played for the Patriots and he
was one of the top is he in the Hall
of Fame? I think he might in the Hall of
Fame too, one of the top defensive backs cornerbacks during
the time.

Speaker 4 (03:05):
Uh.

Speaker 5 (03:05):
And so anyway, he told me, say, hey, make sure
you transition by uh doing something else. Why you're playing football?
And I started doing a lot of television and radio.

Speaker 1 (03:15):
But You've always had a big personality when you were
a player where you like one of those players, like
in the locker because you know, in the locker room,
some guys like to talk to the media, some don't.
Like were you one that was like your quotable and
that you could count on you, like after a tough
loss to get a couple of comments out of you,
because some guys just want to pack their bags and
get out and go on and not have to do anything.

Speaker 3 (03:33):
Yeah.

Speaker 5 (03:33):
I used to tell guys, don't shy away from the media,
because you go to these them you really are. And
if you don't give interviews when you lose, I mean
that's I mean, that's wrong.

Speaker 4 (03:43):
You could she's just to be able to face the music.

Speaker 5 (03:45):
There's only questions, you know, and if you don't like
a question, don't answer it. And so I was always
that guy that was always getting interviewed. Uh And I
mean and I enjoyed getting interviewed. And I stood there
whether we want a loss or it was difficult. You
just stand there and you ask the question.

Speaker 4 (04:02):
That's part of the deal.

Speaker 3 (04:03):
So it begins with you.

Speaker 1 (04:05):
You were undrafted out of Colgate, right, Yeah, So how
was that? What was that like being a smaller college
a brilliant college. Obviously a very smart guy, but to
get into the NFL and stick for that long was
at a more difficult path than the guys that were
coming out of the bigger programs.

Speaker 4 (04:19):
You know, I didn't I didn't know any better.

Speaker 5 (04:22):
You know, I just thought that, you know, when when
you were I was trying out for the team and
I had to do my physical I was like, oh,
I met him on a team. You know, I didn't know.
I didn't know I was really trying out.

Speaker 4 (04:30):
I didn't know.

Speaker 5 (04:31):
I was trying out every day, and I did well
in a mini camp. But the best thing that ever
happened to me when I got hooked up with Dave Brown.
He started mentoring me and teaching me little things about
playing corner.

Speaker 4 (04:45):
I was real small.

Speaker 5 (04:45):
I only waited about it buck eighty, you know about
you know, I looked like I was about fifteen years old,
so I didn't look the part at all. But he
taught me some technique things that really stuck with me,
and it really changed my game. And I've always been
that guy. I don't care who I'm covering. I don't
care if that guy's supposed to be bigger or stronger,

(05:06):
who cares. None of that stuff matters. It never mattered
to me. I was like, look, you just got to
play football. And I've come from that that old school. Like, hey,
me and my brother playing football in the street behind
the cars, trying to trying to win the game. And
he's telling me it only take one play to win
the game. Forget how tall the guy is. Just catch

(05:26):
the ball.

Speaker 1 (05:26):
I'm like, okay, you know about your technique and what
you Yeah.

Speaker 5 (05:32):
Yeah, I've always had that, So I've never I never
got into what a guy looks like.

Speaker 4 (05:38):
Who's what he's supposed to do? So what he's you
should be good.

Speaker 5 (05:42):
In the National Football League, And I've always felt that
I belonged. I've always felt that I was just as
good as anybody I was facing.

Speaker 3 (05:48):
Were you always a safety or you're a corner or
I was.

Speaker 5 (05:50):
A corner When I first came in UH and played
a lot of nickel corner that we sawed back in
the dime.

Speaker 4 (05:55):
UH played a lot of that.

Speaker 5 (05:57):
And when Ken Easily and Paul Moore you got hurt
on the very same both safeties. My coach says, we
need a safety, right and he's grabbing me. There's no
practice squad stuff, none of that. I'm the only guy
who can go in. We need a safety. We need
a safety. He goes, Okay, Robinson, get in the game,
and you better not screw up. Throws me in the game.
As soon as I get in the game, it was

(06:17):
what's the guy? He he does radio, he does television,
and he was a quarterback, Todd Blackleys, that's how it
is God. He checks the play soon as I get
in the game, and it was Colins Carson was a
receiver and Stefan Page. It was a slot formation to
my right hand side, to my left hand side, and
so I hit a check. I moved back about another

(06:38):
couple of yards. They throw this sne go down the middle.
I dive and catch the ball. I bring it back
like fifty five yards. And if it wasn't for Paul
Moyer and Can easily being out on the very same play,
that couldn't come in the game. That's how I got
my start. Yeah, And so that's how I really got
my start. And then that game I had like twelve tackles,

(07:00):
forced fumble and the interception. They were saying, who is
this guy? And I was like, man, this is my shot.
So I ended up with a couple of interceptions that year,
played at the end of the season and having a
number of tackles, and the next year they made me
the free safety.

Speaker 3 (07:14):
Awesome and I loved it.

Speaker 4 (07:15):
All right.

Speaker 1 (07:16):
I'm gonna talk about somebody for a moment here that
you know their name very well.

Speaker 3 (07:19):
And that's Gia.

Speaker 1 (07:21):
Did you guys meet at Colgate? Was it priory because
you guys were very young? Was it high school? Or
when when was it that you all started dating that
you've been married ever since.

Speaker 5 (07:28):
We met at Cogate University, but we'd come from the
same hometown and didn't know it now. I used to
throw a colns at her when she was in the
first grade.

Speaker 3 (07:37):
I thought there was something that was prior, okay, like
like children.

Speaker 4 (07:40):
Were children throw a cols at it? I like them that?

Speaker 3 (07:43):
Or was that your go to move? Throw acorns at girls?

Speaker 4 (07:46):
Sitting man? You know, I gotta get through my attention.

Speaker 3 (07:49):
How did she react to that? Was it she had
her mother received.

Speaker 5 (07:52):
Her mother was outside waiting for me to stay away
from all little boy.

Speaker 3 (07:56):
So you got to wait till you grew up and
went to college.

Speaker 4 (07:58):
I know.

Speaker 5 (07:59):
But our family, he grew up together, her father and
my mother, their brothers and sisters. They grew up together
next door to each other. When he called each other cousin,
I had no idea. And when we met in college,
we were talking about her family. I said, hey, ye
have my uncle name this and this and she said yeah.
I said, they come to the party every time, every day.
My grandmother's picked it every time. And she said, hold up,

(08:20):
wait a minute, this is your family. And then we
told our families that we were dating. And he was like, wow,
I can't believe that you guys would meet in college
and never met at during this time, you know, when
I was before college. And so we end up meeting
and I the marrying Jia in nineteen eighty five.

Speaker 3 (08:36):
I was gonna ask, so you're abrout forty years.

Speaker 4 (08:38):
Now, Yes, thirty nine years we've been married. That's awesome, man,
that's awesome. Yeah.

Speaker 3 (08:42):
And a son and a daughter, right.

Speaker 5 (08:43):
Yeah, Brandon and Brittany Britney thirty seven. And my son
is Brandon. He's thirty four years old by days old.

Speaker 1 (08:50):
But he played at Liberty because I remember back when
he came out of high school and he went to Liberty,
and you would go up and watch his games.

Speaker 4 (08:55):
Oh oh oh, I love.

Speaker 5 (08:57):
I love being involved with my kids sports. My daughter
she's swam and she did. She end up rolling at Clemson.
I used to be every room, every rowing thing, I
was there, my son playing football.

Speaker 4 (09:07):
Every time Saturday, I'm there.

Speaker 5 (09:09):
So that was a great thing about having a lifestyle
that I was coaching and I was doing doing radio.

Speaker 4 (09:16):
Uh you know it's on Sundays.

Speaker 5 (09:18):
So Saturdays I got a chance to go be everywhere
and be and follow my kids everywhere. And so I've
done that. And so my son now he works for NASCAR,
does graphic design. Daughter works for UPS and my son
has a He started a church and so.

Speaker 4 (09:33):
My wife and I will help you.

Speaker 3 (09:34):
I didn't even know that.

Speaker 5 (09:35):
Yeah, we started a church called Zoe Church. And so
started the church. And here my wife and I were
helping him establish his church church.

Speaker 4 (09:44):
Play I had. Yeah, he made. He's a good preacher.

Speaker 5 (09:47):
Man, that dude, dude can preach, man, I said, dude, man,
I said, you know, I heard a lot of preachers, man,
because I'm and I've been a chaplain everywhere I've at
every stop. I've been on the team as a as
a guy, I said, dude, I've heard so many speakers.
I said, dude, I'm not saying because I'm your dad.
I said, dude, you're really good, I said, and I
like to hear you preaching. So oh, he said, very good,

(10:09):
does a good job.

Speaker 1 (10:11):
Very eclectic, you know, all those different things, and how
well your your kids do with all that stuff. And
uh and you're like like Sandra and I, you're empty
nesters now, so you get to like, you know, do
other things. And you're wearing your c at w C
n C TV jacket here today. You've been doing daytime
television there on that program for since show it today?

(10:31):
How many years now?

Speaker 4 (10:32):
Two thousand and fourteen.

Speaker 1 (10:35):
I started by ten years doing this years. For those
who don't know, it's kind of like this, you know,
midday show. But it's like they're very seldom talking about sports.
It's more about just like you'll have a chef come
in and cook something. You talking about, you know, doing
your balancing your budget or doing your investments and stuff
like that.

Speaker 3 (10:51):
Do you enjoy that like any other sports world?

Speaker 4 (10:54):
I love it.

Speaker 5 (10:54):
I love being around people and interviewing people and and
just kind of rubbing elbows with people. I would never
you know, rub elbows within and get to know what
they do, and it's a lifestyle show.

Speaker 4 (11:07):
And it's so much fun.

Speaker 5 (11:08):
It's so much fun, and it's really filled my cup
a lot, you know, trying to figure out what you're
gonna do after season, after football, what are you gonna do.
I've I've really kind of nestled into doing broadcasting and
television and it really does suit me well.

Speaker 1 (11:23):
You know, I think, you know, you're just a big personality,
but I mean you use it when it's like you're
not like screaming on me like that. I mean, you're
just like you're interested in a lot of different things.
So whether it's football, like I said, you guys have
someone making scallops and a pan from a restaurant. I mean,
you just always seem to have the right touch as
far as being able to live life and just enjoy
You seem like someone likes to learn new things all

(11:43):
the time.

Speaker 4 (11:44):
Absolutely, I do.

Speaker 5 (11:46):
It is so much fun when I get a chance
to do and I'm in television and it's just a
part of another phase of my life and rubbing elbows
and interacting with people that I never really kind of
talk to and finding out what they do. I find
that fact and it's been, it's been. I just I
just came back from I was up north. I'm up
in Western Carolina and Boone and we're doing a hometown

(12:09):
hero a giveaway to a woman Jennifer Triplett who's been
helping and the really well she's the hometown here from Hundai,
and she ended up winning getting the car and she
was flabbergaant she's blown away. And as I'm watching this
all on forward, I was like, Wow, I get to
do good stuff like this and be a part of
the good stuff like this.

Speaker 3 (12:29):
Well, that's a good place to leave it.

Speaker 4 (12:31):
You know.

Speaker 3 (12:31):
We get to talk all the time.

Speaker 1 (12:32):
So we'll just pick up where we left off when
I see you in a couple of days. But I
wanted to folks to have a little slice of Eugene,
and I was just like a sliver of a lot
of time that we covered there. But man, appreciate you
being my friend, no doubt. I'd always enjoy talking to you.

Speaker 4 (12:45):
Indeed.

Speaker 1 (12:45):
Oh oh, and before we go, I mean last chance
we got to go. Did you ever figure out who
we're talking about with the Raiders and the Patriots?

Speaker 4 (12:52):
Oh dude, I got it. It's Mike Haynes.

Speaker 5 (12:55):
To do.

Speaker 4 (12:56):
Man great cornerback, long tall can go ahead him. He
was a base man. Love that dude.

Speaker 3 (13:02):
My case, I just wanted to resolve it for everybody.

Speaker 2 (13:04):
Before like thirty seasons of Panther football
