(00:00):
Welcome to Adventist Waves.

(00:09):
Welcome to Adventist Waves, I am your host, Karna Elmins.
On today's episode, I talk to Carly Fletcher.
She just released an album, and one of the songs that she has produced on that album
is called I Lean.

(00:50):
In Adventist Waves, we look at the songs of Adventist musicians.
Song stories told one piece at a time.
Thank you for listening.

(01:11):
Well I'm Australian, so born in Australia, but my father was a pastor.
So we shifted to Poppin New Guinea when I was four years old, and had about six years
there.
And then we moved to New Zealand for six years, and then finally back to Sydney, Australia.
So I feel that, yeah, I feel that having that background where we lived in Poppin New Guinea

(01:37):
and New Zealand particularly, I think that had a big influence on my music, because you
have all the beautiful harmonies that they do and things like that.
So I have a love for that sort of music from my upbringing.
How old were you when you were there?
So I was between the ages of four and then ten.

(01:59):
Four and ten, okay.
And what was it like when you were listening to the music, the choirs and stuff?
They used to do a lot of like concerts and different groups would sing, and so we just
had beautiful acoustic music with lots of harmonies.
I just loved that fellowship where everyone comes together and just sings, and very joyful

(02:22):
music as well.
So that had a very positive impact on me.
When did your musical journey start?
When did you record your first albums?
I think my journey started probably when I was a teenager in New Zealand.
My older sister, she started songwriting, and so when you often follow your older sibling

(02:43):
and try and do what they do, so I started songwriting as well.
But probably more seriously, like as I was an older teenager, and then I attended the
Arise Bible College.
It was there that I was really convicted by God, and basically he was saying, you know,
you've got all these songs that I've given you, what are you doing with them?

(03:07):
Because I was very shy to share.
And so at that point, I was convicted, okay, I'm going to do something with them, and that's
when I recorded the first album called Follow the Lamb.
So that was a really good, yeah, going to the Arise Bible College was a really powerful

(03:27):
motivator to use those gifts and things to glorify God and to share them for God's glory.
So if listeners want to hear some more of your music, I believe that they can go on
to different platforms, right?
Where can they hear more about your music?
You can search for it on YouTube, you can find it on Spotify and probably Apple Music

(03:51):
as well, Amazon, all of those digital platforms.
Yeah.
All right, check it out.
If you had to describe your music in one sentence or one paragraph, how would you describe
it to somebody who's never listened to it before?

(04:12):
I would probably say something like gentle and sweet melodies enriched with the word
of God.
That's what I can think of at the moment.
That's cool.
That's cool.
Yeah.
And I believe that you have recently created a new album.

(04:34):
Would you be able to share with us how the album came about?
Yeah, so that one, it's been a little bit longer in the making because I've had a couple
of kids along the way.
So the process just took a little bit longer.
But that's not a bad thing.
I wanted to prioritize the kids above that.

(04:54):
With this new album, I wanted to have a different featured artist on each song.
So that was a really fun process.
Having other Adventist artists involved.
Yeah, I just really wanted to put something together that was thought provoking.
And God gave me some special songs for that one as well.
So I was just really inspired to keep at it, even though it was a bit slow, but just to

(05:19):
keep at it and finally get it out.
Yeah.
It's in the end, right?
That's right.
It's called in the end.
In the end.
Okay.
So inspiration behind the name.
So the inspiration in the end is one of the songs on the album.

(05:40):
And basically it's taken from a verse in Jeremiah.
I can't remember the exact reference, but it's where it talks about how the people were
just getting the false prophets to tell them all the smooth words that they wanted to hear
instead of the word of God.
And Jeremiah is saying to them, you can have all these smooth words, but what are you going

(06:03):
to do in the end?
And you're left with that question, like what will we do in the end?
We can do all these things in life, but in the end, we have to stand before God and what
are we going to do in the end?
So it's just to really provoke those thoughts of seriousness.
Like what are we doing with our lives?

(06:25):
Are we allowing Christ's righteousness to cover us and to submit to Him?
Yeah.
What are we doing?
Very thought provoking.
Yeah.
So you're really trying to aim at the heart of people, trying to get them to open up their
hearts to Jesus.
Yeah.
Yeah.
Yes.
And think seriously about their lives.

(06:46):
Right.
Yeah.
Is there a special song on there that resonates with you a lot and showcases the work that
you do?
I really like, I like that one in the end of it, but I also really like this one called
I'm Lean.

(07:32):
And for me, it was really meaningful because as a mum, you've got a lot of things happening
all the time and you need strength and energy from God.
And there I lean, I lean on Jesus.
He is my strength.
He is my refuge.

(07:53):
And there I lay.
I lay my burdens down and I lean.
I lean.

(08:19):
So I did that one with Johanna Kingston, who's a really gifted, she's probably Johanna
McKay now, but she's a really gifted, advenus singer.

(08:49):
And it basically talks about how when I don't have the strength, I lean on Jesus.
And that's where I get my support, my wisdom, my strength.
Yeah.
So that was really, that's probably very personally meaningful to me.

(09:10):
And I'm leaning on Jesus.
So how did you go about recording?

(09:39):
How did you go about recording that song?
Well, the Tweed Valley Adventist College, they have a little studio there, which they use
for ministry, which is really awesome.
So I don't know, have you heard of Sandra Enteming with the Sabbath Singalong?
I have, yeah.
Yeah.
So she often comes to that studio to do the Sabbath Singalong with Johanna and Paul

(10:06):
Buora and that, and so we, yeah, we use that to get Johanna's recording done there.
So that was a real blessing.
It's being used for mission, which is awesome.
Yeah.
So I guess those people who are viewing can also check out some of her music as well.
And the Sabbath Singalong is a community that people can listen to every Friday night

(10:27):
and have that connection with music.
And yeah, oh, that's really awesome, Kali.
I'm really grateful that we're able to network and to connect with you today and to get rid
of an insight in your music and how your latest album in the end was, of course, if I listen,
it's one to listen to more of it.

(10:48):
It's available on Spotify and iTunes and on YouTube, right?
Yeah.
Is there any other ways that they can connect with you?
I guess they can write to my music email, which is kaliflitchamusic.com.
All right, great.
And if there was one way that people could support Adventist musicians like yourself,

(11:15):
if there's one practical way that people could support Adventist musicians like yourselves,
what would you say to them?
Yeah, I guess first thing, listen to the music and try and support those artists through getting
their music and sharing their music, praying for their ministry.

(11:39):
Yeah, I think it's a pretty tricky thing.
I don't know, like, there's not really a lot of platforms to promote Adventist music.
Maybe you might know some more.
Yeah, yeah.
I agree with that.
You can buy the music, buy the music.
A great way to do it also for some musicians who are very talented is to provide backing

(12:03):
tracks of their music as well and sell their backing tracks and their licenses as well.
Yeah.
Many ways Adventist musicians can make money.
I hope that we can get more new Adventist artists too.
I hope that people are inspired to write more songs and use their gifts for God.

(12:26):
Amen.
It's so accessible now to be able to write music and to make music with the technology
that's being produced.
It's so easy for people to produce good quality music for the world to listen to.
Yeah, that's so true.
Yeah, so guys, that's it.
You've heard it.
This has been Kali and Khan here talking on the Adventist Waves podcast.

(12:50):
Appreciate you listening on to the podcast today and keep watching Adventist Waves.
There's a lot more to come.
So praise the Lord.
Keep on listening.
Keep on making music and may God bless you.
We'll see you next time.
Thank you.
Bye.

(13:36):
Thank you.
