(00:01):
Well here it is time for Johnand Joe.
Again, this will be our thirdpodcast and, as usual, we have
some, cleanup items to do fromour last one.
I think I mentioned, having adaughter and a son, but I didn't
mention that.
my daughter has three children, but my son has a wife and one
child.
She's gonna be 20 in a couple ofdays.
(00:23):
Hard to believe that's,grandchildren Joe, you were
pretty good last time.
I don't think you made anymistakes, did you?
Well, I do wanna say that, Maya, our granddaughter, was born on
my birthday.
What does that mean?
She's gonna be 20.
And I'm gonna be well into my96, right?
(00:44):
96.
Now we thought.
With nine, six years of life,Joe and I would talk a little
bit about what we did when wewere young, kids growing up.
So, Joe, you can start.
Well, I had a lot of fun when Iwas young.
we had a garden, we called it avictory garden.
You have to realize that I wasborn during the depression, so
(01:07):
we had to make our food And thenwe canned that food and we ate
it all winter.
my mother prepared the meals andI was one of three girls.
So we cleaned up the kitchen andwe had fun singing while we were
cleaning.
we just had a good time dancingaround the table.
(01:29):
And also, I had, paper dollswhen I was a kid, and the way to
get paper dolls from me, I hadto collect soda bottles and take
those to the local grocery storeand get a nickla bottle.
And then I saved that money andI pay, bought my paper towels.
(01:51):
So what, what kind of hobby didyou have?
Well, I'm wanna get back to thisdish washing.
Oh, you said, you and yoursister, did you have an electric
dishwasher or, oh, mercy man.
How did that work?
One washed the dishes, one driedthe dishes, the woman put the
dishes away.
Oh, okay.
Well it was nice you had a groupof people, that can help you.
So both with three girls.
(02:12):
We've made do.
So this thing with paper dolls, tell me about that.
No, they were in a magazine.
In a book, and you had to cutthe dolls out cut the clothes
out, and dress them in differentclothes and you made up stories
when they wore those clothes.
Were they like movie star peopleor just pictures?
(02:33):
they were pretty, pretty, prettylike movie stars.
Well, I didn't have paper dollswhen I was little.
We, we weren't that lucky.
I had a BB gun.
And, with this BB gun, I couldshoot my brother and anybody
else that, I wanted to Well, I'mglad I didn't live near you.
you're lucky.
The other thing we used to do,my brother and I would throw
(02:54):
rocks at each other.
I don't know how we survived, but, we would pick rocks and
throw until one of us.
Got hurt and ran into mother, then she would say, whose fault
is this?
And I would blame my brother.
My brother would blame me.
and that was the end of it.
So did you, ever play baseball?
you mean when I was a kid?
Yes.
(03:15):
I played softball.
yes, I would play softball.
not to be confused when Iumpired softball in my later
years, which is another story, agroup of us boys and girls,
played every night until it gotdark, Did you ever play games
like where you sit on a stoopand go up and down the stoop and
that kind of stuff?
(03:36):
No, but we played Chee with myfamily, Chee.
we, didn't do that, but I didlisten to the Lone Ranger, sky
King, all those good radioshows.
by the way, I still watch TheLone Ranger every afternoon on
tv.
Yes, he does.
enjoy it.
he brings a good American spiritto his show.
(03:56):
I was thinking about.
My bicycle I had goggles and ahelmet like I would wear, and I
looked like I was, I was aspace.
Ship guy.
But, I finally learned to ridethis bike and my dad said, well,
it's time to get you a realbike.
This was not a, training wheelbike, but a smaller one.
(04:17):
I got a bigger bike and those ofyou who remember Western Auto,
my bike came from Western Auto, had a horn, it had a ring bell,
and it was a beautiful bicycle.
What color was it?
It was red, and I left it on myfront porch.
That's where I left it.
One day I went out and mybicycle was gone.
(04:38):
Somebody stole it.
Oh no.
So I was without wheels.
my bicycle was blue, and onetime I went to the local gas
station to put air in the tiresand I put too much air in it and
the tire blew up.
Mm-hmm.
Well, my bicycle, we had to putpatches on inner tubes all the
time.
That's what we used.
So we'd go to the gas stationand get air in it and patch it
(05:01):
up and pump it up and put itback together and ride again.
The other thing I remember.
Roller skates, but I didn't useroller skates to skate on.
I took these roller skates andbroke'em in half, took a couple
of two by fours and put one, upand down and two sideways, and
(05:21):
put the roller skates on thosesideways.
And we had what we call a skatemobile.
And we would ride down the hill, into the traffic on Bessemer
Boulevard.
it's luckily.
We weren't killed, But anyway, again, that's when my mother
didn't know what I was doingand, she would wonder where my
skates were.
And of course I didn't have'em'cause they were broken.
(05:43):
They were on the, skate mobile.
So I had skates too.
and these skates were, attachedto your shoes, With a key.
Exactly.
And you tightened them on.
Yes, yes.
See, we didn't have video or TVor.
Stuff like that.
Nothing fancy, no, nothingfancy.
Only, play, with other kids and,you have to realize that we grew
(06:04):
up after the depression, somoney was very tight.
We just didn't have anyluxuries.
I remember one time I wanted apair of, football cleats.
So I got a pair of shoes and gotpieces of rubber and took'em to
the local shoe guy and I said, could you glue these on?
(06:25):
And they'll be like, footballcleats.
So he glued them on and I put'emon and I walked on'em and every
one of'em broke off.
So it was a waste of time.
which football wasn't my gameanyway, but I thought I would
look good, but didn't do it.
Well, nothing's worthwhile untilyou try it.
That's right.
You gotta give it a try.
We talked about, hobbies at onetime, and I think we need a
(06:49):
whole episode, but who know usknow that, I'm into pasta making
now I've got all the utensils.
I've got, rolling pins, mats, scrapers, spaghetti pasta, dish
uppers.
I've got, a pasta machine fromItaly, manual that I roll out,
and I have made several kinds ofpasta.
(07:12):
still experimenting with the, menu, but with eggs, the price
they are.
Joe won't let me experiment toomuch'cause I need two eggs for
every test pasta batch I make.
So, that pasta that he makes, wehave to eat.
We have to eat it or give itaway, and, we freeze it.
sometimes when people bring usstuff.
(07:34):
We've got nothing to give'em.
So I'll give'em a handful ofpasta out of the freezer so that
way we feel, we've done our gooddeed.
we never return a bowl empty.
Never.
Something always in it.
Either liquid.
Or frozen or in a box or cookedor fruit or whatever, like
zucchinis or lemons or applesWhatever we have on hand.
(07:56):
you know, my dad was born inItaly, came over when he was
four years old, and there wassomething on the internet that
if you went to Italy, they'd payyou$30,000 to move there.
And I asked Joe, when are wegoing?
And she said, no, not me.
So I don't wanna go over thereby myself.
(08:17):
I've been there, done that.
But we're talking about making30,000 bucks to just go there
and live.
Not worth the money, John.
Well just something to thinkabout when we get tired of
living here and they're ready tomove again.
speaking of moving again, We'renot, are we?
absolutely not.
'cause we had our last episodeabout moving and it was a pain
(08:39):
in the neck.
So we are stuck here.
However, I wanna say, eventhough we did get rid of a lot
of stuff, we are still ordering.
as of today, I ordered a coupleof TV trays.
even though when we moved here,we gave four of'em away.
I ordered two, so I don't know.
It's funny what you need, right?
We just needed it for somereason.
(09:01):
Well, we play cards with a,there are eight of us in a card
group, and when we have it here, four play at the dining room
table, and four play at a cardtable.
And the card table's a littlesmall for drinks and snacks.
So this isn't only playingcards, it's also eating.
So we have to have these tablesto eat.
(09:23):
And talk, and then the card gamebecomes the least of the thing
unless, the men win.
which we usually don't.
well, we're 11 minutes into thispodcast.
This is the longest we've everdone.
I think it's about time we, signoff and let our faithful
listeners you know who you are.
who listen to us on a regularbasis.
We thank you for listening.
(09:44):

That's it.
We're got Johnny and Joe saying.
