Speaker 1 (00:01):
Welcome everybody to All Things Arts and Crafts, the podcast
where creativity meets everyday life. Whether you're picking up a
paint brush or glue gun, we're here to spark your imagination.
On today's episode, we're diving into the world of simple sculptures,
walking you through an easy, step by step guide to

(00:21):
turning found objects into charming, one of a kind pieces.
This is perfect for beginners and seasoned crafters alike. This
is creativity made simple. On the last episode, we explored
fundamental sculpting techniques. It's time now to get our hands dirty,

(00:42):
literally with some fun projects. These simple step by step
guides will walk you through the process of creating charming
sculptures from found objects. This is perfect for beginners and
seasoned crafters alike. Remember, the key is to embrace the
unact affected and revel in the creative journey. There's no

(01:03):
such thing as a mistake, only opportunities for happy accidents.
Let's begin with a project that beautifully showcases the versatility
of hand building a whimsical garden creature. Gather your materials air, dry, clay,
or any pliable material you prefer, even rolled up newspaper

(01:23):
soaked in PVA glue. Who knew small pebbles, twigs, and
possibly some colorful glass beads. The body. Let's start with
the body. Start by creating a basic ball of clay
roughly the size of a small orange. Gently roll it
between your palms to smooth the surface and create a

(01:45):
roundus somewhat organic form. Don't worry about perfection. Irregularities always
add character. Now we're going to do the hands and
or the legs and the head. Roll out four thinner
coils of clay for the legs. These don't need to
be perfectly even a bit of wobbliness adds charm. Attach

(02:07):
them to the bottom of the body, pressing gently to
secure them. You might need a little tool to kind
of blend it into the body. Make sure it's secure.
For the head, roll a smaller ball of clay and
attach it to the top of the body, slightly flattening
the point of contact to create a smooth transition. Next,

(02:29):
for the facial features, use a toothpick or a small
blunt tool to add simple facial features. Two small indentations
can create eyes, and a curved line can add a
smiling mouth. Because we always want a smiling forest. Creature.
Of course, don't be afraid to experiment with what you like.

(02:51):
You can always blend it out. If you're not happy
with what you've done, of course, let your imagination guide you.
Perhaps you're creature has a surprised expression, or a little mischief,
mischievous grin. Whatever your creativity is telling you, go for it.
Now for some embellishments. This is the fun part, adding

(03:15):
some personality. Press small pebbles into the clay to create
textured skin or scales. Stick twigs into the clay to
form arms or antennae. Use small glass beads or shells
for glittering accents, or to add detail to the facial features.

(03:36):
Let your creativity flow, y'all. Now for the drying and finishing.
Allow the clay to air dry completely according to whatever
medium you're using, and make sure to look at the
manufacturer's instructions. This, of course, can take several days or
even a week, so be patient, depending on the thickness

(03:59):
of the clay and the humidity of your environment. Once
it's dry, you can add a ceilant to protect your
sculpture and to give it more of a more polished look.
Our next project uses coil building to create something truly
unique a decorative bowl. For this, we'll use recycled cardboard, fabric, scraps,

(04:24):
or strong glue. If y'all are like me, you did
this as a kid. I remember rolling long pieces of
clay up and just coiling a bowl, and then we
left it in the art teacher, you know, put it
in the kiln and dried it. But this is going
to be a little bit different. So first we're going
to start with the base. We're going to cut several

(04:46):
strips of cardboard about one inch wide and a varying
lengths rolled. Roll each strip tightly into a coil. You
can create a wide range of colors and textures by
using different colors and textures of cardboard. Try using cereal boxes,
gift boxes, or even old greeting cards would work. Let

(05:09):
your inner scavenger unleash itself. Now we're going to build
the walls. Arrange the cardboard coils in a circular pattern,
overlapping them slightly to create a solid base. Make sure
the base is secure. Secure them firmly using a strong adhesive,
ensuring that the coils are a snug against each other.

(05:34):
Start adding coils on top, working your way upward You
can make the coils larger or smaller, depending on the
size and shape you want for your bowl. Now we're
going to shape the form as you build. Carefully shape
the walls of the bowl, gently pressing and adjusting the

(05:54):
coils to create a smooth, gently curving form. You can
use your fingers to smooth the joints between the coils.
Now we want to add some texture, because we all
know that texture makes it interesting, right. This is where
fabric scraps come in. Cut small pieces of fabric and
glue them onto the surface of the bowl, creating an

(06:17):
interesting textural contrast. We can use a variety of colors
and textures for added visual appeal. You can even use
bits of lace or ribbon for extra flare. And now
for the finishing touches. Once the glue is completely dry,
you might want to add a ceilant to protect your bowl.
Depending on what you're using this for, you can use

(06:40):
a clear varnish or even decupage glue to give it
a polished and durable finish. Finally, let's explore a slab
building with a charming miniature house. This project uses repurposed
cardboard for a truly sustainable and delightful creation. Let's begin

(07:01):
the walls. Cut several rectangular pieces of cardboard for the
walls of your house. The size depends entirely on your
desired house size. Remember scale as your friend. Here you
can use different colored cardboard for visual interest. Think of
using pieces of magazine covers for added color and texture.

(07:24):
And now for the roof, cut a square piece of
cardboard for your roof. You can also make a more
complex roof using triangles, depending on the style of house
you're aiming for. The possibilities are endless, of course. Now
for assembly, score the edges of the cardboard pieces lightly

(07:46):
before carefully assembling them with glue or strong tape. Make
sure the joins are secure and the structure is sturdy.
For the doors and the walls, cut out smaller rectangular
pieces of cardboard for doors and windows. You can even
use scraps of colored paper or fabric to create more

(08:07):
detailed windows. Perhaps use small bottle caps for doorknobs. How
cute is that? Bottle caps? Oh my gosh? Or buttons.
Wouldn't buttons be cute? Oh my gosh, that just came
to me. A button doorknob, Oh my gosh, I love it.
I'm going to do this details and embellishments. This is
the time for creativity to shine. Shine it up, girls

(08:30):
and boys, decorate your house. Add tiny twigs for fences,
pebbles for pathways, or even miniature cutouts for flower beds.
Let your inner architect unleash the creativity and finishing. Once
your glue is dry, consider adding a ceilant to your
miniature house to protect it from the elements. This will

(08:51):
also make it more durable these projects. Before I conclude,
I want to say something. One of the my favorite
memories of my youngest child, my daughter, is making fairy
houses in the woods. When we would go away as
a family, we would we would always try to go

(09:13):
every year up to the mountains, but she and I
would escape. Actually both of my daughters did this with
me for a while, but particularly my youngest, and we
would spend hours collecting pine cones and twigs and moss
and leaves and little stones and pebbles and acorns and

(09:33):
what else was it? Feathers and things like that, and
we would make the most adorable fairy houses. And some
of those are some of my favorite memories and some
of my most treasured pictures of are of her next
to our finished project, and we had just had so
much fun together. And when she's fourteen now, so I'm

(09:54):
going to see if I can get her to do
that with me. But anyway, yeah, I'll just just go
and enjoy these projects. They're just merely starting points to
your you know, to your arts and crafts. But there's
so much fun and they're never perfect, and that's what
makes them awesome. Don't be afraid to experiment with different materials.
You never know you might invent something different techniques and designs.

(10:19):
The beauty of found objects sculpting is it's boundless potential
for creative expression. Remember there are no rules, only possibilities.
So gather your materials, let your imagination run wild and
create something truly unique and wonderfully quirky. And if you
have children, get them involved, let them be creative. Nothing

(10:42):
is off limits here, and most importantly, y'all have fun.
The joyful chaos of crafting awaits Thanks for tuning in
to all things arts and crafts today, we hope that
this episode to creating simple sculptures inspired you to see

(11:03):
everyday items in an entirely different way, whether it's wire,
wood or old buttons. There's beauty in the unexpected. Be
sure to listen to the next episode, where we'll keep crafting, creating,
and exploring the joy of handmade art. So until then,
keep being creative, keep having fun, and we'll see you
