Speaker 1 (00:00):
Hey everybody, and welcome, Welcome back to Philadelphia and episode eleven.
And it is March first for me, and spring is
about to be sprung, so this is a great time
to go to Philadelphia. So it's time to go ahead
and make those reservations, and let's go ahead and get
started with that. We've talked about how to get there,
how to get around once you get there. We've gone
over accommodations, every budget, we've talked fine dining, we've talked

(00:26):
a little nightlife. And now we're kind of taking a
little historical tour so you'll know what to expect from
the different areas of Philadelphia and in the historical aspects.
So I want to talk a little bit today about
the Betsy Ross House and some of the early American
history involved with Philly. So let's continue our journey through

(00:50):
Philadelphia's historical areas. A short distance from Elfras Alley brings
us to another significant landmark, c Ross House. You know,
I brought up Betsy Ross to a couple of people
the other day and they looked at me like I
was talking some kind of foreign language. People seem to
have forgotten who Betsy Ross was. So if you don't

(01:13):
know what I'm going to tell you, but she has
something to do with the flag. About that and her
role in creating the first American flag remains a subject
of ongoing historical debate. The house itself stands as a
powerful symbol of early American life and craftsmanship, offering a

(01:33):
compelling glimpse into the area that birthed the nation. The structure,
a modest yet charming dwelling a two and at two
thirty nine Arch Street, is a tangible connection to the
pivotal excuse me, the pivotal time in American history. I

(01:57):
lost my place, Sorry about that, inviting his visit to
ponder the lives of those who shaped the nation's destiny.
The Betsy Ross House, meticulously preserved, allows visitors to step
back into the eighteenth century. The simple, yet elegant architecture
reflects the building style prevalent during the period. The exterior,

(02:18):
with its brick facade and unassuming charm, hints hints at
the rich history contained within. Entering the house is like
stepping into a time capsule. The rooms, furnished with period
appropriate pieces, offer a vivid picture of daily life and
Philadelphia during the Revolutionary era. One can imagine Betsy Ross

(02:39):
herself moving through the rooms, her nimble fingers expertly stitching
fabrics and creating intricate designs they would eventually be associated
with the nation's symbol. The house's interior interiors are remarkably
well preserved, offering a fascinating insight into the domestic arrangements

(03:00):
of the time. Each room tells a story from the
cozy living quarters where the family life unfolded, into the workshop,
where skilled hands transformed fabric into wol works of art.
The attention to detail is striking, allowing visitors to appreciate
the meticulous craftsmanship and attention to history accuracy that has

(03:22):
gone into maintaining the national treasure. The furnishings are not
mere props. They are meticulously researched replicas, accurately representing the
materials and styles of the eighteenth century. This commitment to
historical authenticity enhances the immersive experience for visitors. Beyond the

(03:43):
artifacts and the house's structure, the Betsy Ross House offers
a rich narrative of Philadelphia's social and political landscape during
the American Revolution. The house's location itself speaks volumes about
its place within the city's history in a neighborhood bustling
with activity during the formative years of the new nation,

(04:05):
Imagine the conversations, the anxieties, and the hopes that must
have filled these rooms as the colonies wrestled with the
powerful British Empire and embarked on their quest for independence.
The exhibits within the Betsy Ross House extend it beyond
the visual artifacts. Informative displays and interpretive materials dive into

(04:29):
the life of Betsy Ross, providing contexts into her work
and exploring the controversies surrounding her claim to have crafted
the first American flag. These exhibits carefully present both sides
of the historical debate, encouraging visitors to form their own
opinions based on the evidence in historical research. This balance

(04:52):
approach to historical interpretation is commendable, reflecting a commitment to
accuracy and critical thinking. And for those interested in the
art of quilting and needlework, the Betsy Ross House offers
a compelling study in early American crafts. The meticulous stitching,

(05:12):
the choice of fabrics, and the patterns themselves all reveal
a remarkable skill in artistry. The techniques employed were passed
down through generations, showcasing the important role women played in
domestic economy and in the community at large. Viewing the
display of needlework within the house provided a deeper appreciation

(05:34):
for these skills and their significance in the eighteenth century Philadelphia.
Stepping into the house, one immediately senses a profound connection

a chance to reflect on the people and events that
shaped a nation. And you know, maybe there's a little
controversy about Betsy Ross, but I'm telling you right now,
in my book, Betsy Ross was woman. She she she
was the one. I'm giving her the credit. And you

(10:05):
guys can disagree if you want to, But I think
that the Betsy Ross House is a great place to
go and visit when you're in Philadelphia. My wife is
from Philadelphia, and she said it is just remarkably and
impeccably authentic to what it was like way back in
the revolutionary time period. Not that she was alive then,

(10:25):
absolutely not. Anyway, there are so many things other than
just the Betsy Ross deal in Philadelphia with the Spring.
So I've got a list of five really cool things
to do in the springtime in Philadelphia, especially if you're
a visitor. You may not know about these things. So
as the weather warms, this is a this is a

(10:46):
great list of some things to do. Uh. Number one
would be cherry blossoms in fair Mount Park. You know
the gardener walk along Kelly Drive to see the stunt
cherry blossoms in full bloom, especially during the annual Subaru
Cherry Blossom Festival. That said, don't miss I mean you're

(11:08):
gonna need something like that after hanging out Betsy Ross
for so long. Exploring Independence National Historic Park is a
great time the landmark, like the Liberty Bell Independence Hall.
It's great when it starts to get a little bit warmer.
Strolling through Longwood Gardens a short drive from Philly. Longwood
Gardens comes alive in the spring with thousands of blooming tulips, daffodils,

(11:32):
and flowering trees. Absolutely amazing outdoor dining in beer gardens,
I mean, come on, can you beat that? I mean,
a little al fresco with all the history of Philadelphia,
like Morgan's Pier, Independence Beer Garden or Spruce Street Harbor
Park as they reopen for the season, I mean, go
get it done. Right, and of course we can't forget this,

(11:55):
and this is for my aunt Sandy Philly's game at
Citizens Bank Park. Huge Phillies fan. That whole side of
my family is they are from Philly. So baseball season
is back. Catch a Phillies game and enjoy classic ballpark
snacks like cheese steaks and maybe a big old cold

(12:16):
beer while cheering for the home team. Of course, spring
and Philly is all about enjoying the outdoors, so history
and great food while the city shakes off the winter chill.
You need to be a part of it. You need
to go ahead and book those those reservations and get
your butt up there so you can really enjoy, you know,

(12:38):
some of the warmer things of Philly. All right, we're
done with the winter stuff. Go go. You can still
have the Philly cheese steak in the spring, all right,
that's fine. It doesn't have to be you know, comfort
food the middle of winter. Just go get one to
eat it. But you got to get there first, So
push the button, make those reservations, and we'll see you
up there. So until then, see you next time. You know,

(13:02):
