Speaker 1 (00:00):
Hey everybody, and welcome, welcome back, Thanks for joining me
today starting early this morning. So if I'm talking a
little slow, it's because I hadn't had enough coffee yet.
Just ahead of time disclaimer right there. So we're talking
Philly today, Philadelphia, the City of Brotherly Love. And we've

(00:21):
been talking about Philadelphia for the past twelve weeks or
twelve episodes at least, about being a first time visitor
and going to Philadelphia and doing all the cool touristy
things right and what you expect looking at accommodations and
things like that. We're gonna change it up a little bit.
We're going to do what I am calling Philadelphia like

(00:41):
a local. So all you locals in there that are
tuning in and listening now you're going to get some
things that maybe you used to do or are been
thinking about doing, or maybe even some new things being
brought up to you in these episodes that you might say, Hey,
you know what, I am living a great place. I

(01:02):
want to get out there and do some of those
things or go do some of those things again. And
you know, we are creatures of habit, So once we
get into a routine, sometimes we shut a lot of
other things out that used to give us enjoyment. So
that's kind of what I'm getting at. So if you're
a visitor you're heading up that way, this is going
to give you a lot of information, a little bit
off the beaten path. If you live there, you're a resident,

(01:25):
you're a local, this might be a little incentive to
get back out there and do some things you've always
wanted to do, or things that you used to do.
So we're looking beyond the Liberty Bell, discovering Philadelphia's hidden gems. Right.
There's so much to offer here that we just don't do.
You don't see very often because it's not what all

(01:48):
the tourists go and do. So here, you know, I
always say in all my travel podcasts is that you know,
ask a local, see what they do. What did they suggest?
I mean, don't be a stalker, but follow one around
for a while. You know that's out to have a
good time. Not someone who's going to the grocery store
than the drug store and to work. That'd be really

(02:09):
weird or home. But if someone's out having a good
time and going to a restaurant, see where they're going,
but do it respectfully. I'm not, you know, condoning stalkers
here at all. Just get that straight. So let's forget
the crowded. Let's just forget all the crowds, you know,

(02:32):
just to get a glimpse of the Liberty Bell. Right.
Philadelphia is a city steeped in history, brimming with character,
offers a treasure trove of experiences far beyond the well
trodden tourist trail. This isn't just a podcast. It's an
invitation to discover the authentic soul of Philadelphia, the vibrant

(02:55):
pulse that beats beneath the surface of the iconic landmarks.
Let's dive into the hidden alleyways, uncover secret gardens, and
unearth the quirky charm that makes the city so uniquely captivating.
Prepare to experience Philadelphia like a local, not just a tourist.

(03:16):
Is that kind of cool? I mean a little bit
different take on things here. So our journey begins by
shedding the expectations of the typical tourist itinerary. While Independence
Hall and the Liberty Bell undoubtedly holds significant historical value,
they represent only a sliver of what Philadelphia truly offers.

(03:38):
The city breeze history, art and culture in every cobblestone
street and every friendly neighborhood conversation. To truly appreciate it,
we need to venture beyond the familiar to explore the
hidden gems waiting to be discovered. Let's start with the
vibrant murals that adorn South Street, a kaleidoscope of colors

(04:01):
and stories painted onto brick walls. These aren't just pretty pictures,
they're powerful narratives reflecting the city's diverse culture and history.
Take your time wander down the street, pausing to appreciate
the intricate details, the bold statements, and the subtle nuances
of each artwork. Many of these murals are created by

(04:22):
local artists, reflecting the unique spirit of the city's artistic community.
Look for the work of Isaiah Zagar Hope. I'm giving
you good props on your name there, Isaiah, whose mosaic
art is a testament to his dedication to beautifying the city.

(04:43):
Find the Magic Gardens, a truly unforgettable hidden gem in
the art of South Philly, a stunning, whimsical labyrinth of
recycled materials transformed into a living, breathing artwork. Don't be
afraid to get lost among the recycled bottles, bikes, and
other materials, each one carefully placed to create a truly

(05:06):
unique and astonishing experience. From the vibrant canvases of South
Street will turn our attention to the hushed serenity of
old cities. Hidden courtyards tucked away between historic buildings. These
tranquil oasis offer a welcome respite from the bustling city streets.

(05:29):
Explore the charming pathways, discover unexpected fountains, and imagine the
lives that have unfolded within these intimate spaces for centuries.
These secret gardens of often house small. They contain small
businesses or restaurants, offering a quiet spot to enjoy a meal.

(05:51):
Consider taking a guided tour or focused on the hidden courtyards.
A local guide will share antidotes and historical information you'd
otherwise miss. A good starting point would be Alfred's Alley
and That's Elf like Elf and R. E. T h s.
Alfred's Alley the oldest residential street in America, offering a

(06:15):
glimpse into the colonial Philadelphia. The architecture alone is a treasure,
and many of the houses hold fascinating stories waiting to
be unveiled. Look for plaques and historical markers to deepen
your understanding of this historical neighborhood. But exploring Philadelphia's hidden
gems isn't just about discovering remarkable places. It's about understanding

(06:38):
how to navigate the city like a local. Philadelphia's public
transportation system, the Septa Septa, is an efficient and affordable
way to explore the city. Mastering the bus and subway
system will unlock access to neighborhoods often missed by tourists
reliant on taxis and rideshare service. Familiar yourself with the

(07:01):
Septa website or app and download Downloading the app is
easily is a good way to easily plan your route
and check real time schedules. Don't be afraid to ask
for help from locals. Philadelphians are generally welcoming and happy
to point you in the right direction, and they're not
going to point you the direction of out of town.

(07:23):
I promise. My wife is from Philly and she's amazing.
All of her family is amazing, So firsthand, you know,
most of the people in Philly are pretty cool. They
talk a little bit different, particularly if you're a Southerner
like me, But that doesn't mean anything, you know. I mean,
it just makes it more interesting to listen to. So
wear comfortable shoes and prepare to embrace on the unexpected

(07:47):
discoveries that will wait around every corner. Speaking of unexpected discoveries,
let's consider the reading terminal market, reading, the reading greeting, reading,
reading term market. My wife could absolutely blister mine behind,
not in a good way and bustling, and not that
it could ever be a good way, right, that was

(08:09):
just a silly statement. Like I said this early in
the morning, I need more coffee. A bustling indoor marketplace
that's been a Philadelphia institution for over a century. It's
more than just a place to grab a quick bite.
It's a vibrant hub of culinary activity, showcasing the city's
diverse food scene, beyond the iconic cheese steaks, which we'll

(08:31):
explore later. And I've done that before, and we're going
to hit it again and again and again. You'll find
everything from Pennsylvania Dutch specialties to fresh seafood, international cuisine,
and artisan bait goods. Take your time, wander through the stalls,
sample the variety of treats, and observe the lively interactions

(08:51):
between vendors and customers. This is where the real character
of Philadelphia unfolds. Another hidden gem lies in the city's
independent bookstores. Unlike large chain stores, these establishments offer a
unique atmosphere, often hosting author readings and I need to

(09:12):
do some of those they're having. Now my books aren't
good enough. Well, that's a different story. They're havens for
bibliot for bibliophiles. That's kind of like BiblioTech. You know,
that's my that's my friends, that's all I know. Asiontek
providing a created, that's sad, curated selection of books in

(09:35):
a quiet space of reflection. Explore these book havens, you
might stumble upon a literary discovery you won't find anywhere else.
Many of these bookstores curate their selection based on specific
genres or themes, providing an opportunity discover authors and books
that might otherwise be overlooked. Look for smaller bookstores in

(09:58):
neighborhoods like Fish Tank in South Philly. You'll often find
a unique collections of welcoming staff eager to share their recommendations.
Many even offer weekly events and readings, offering a chance
to connect within the city's literary community. Don't overlook the
city's impressive collection of smaller museums. While the larger museums

(10:21):
attract considerable attention, many smaller institutions offer fascinating insights into
specific aspects of Philadelphia's rich history and culture. These smaller
museums often specialize in unique collections and offer a more
intimate and personal experience. Research the various smaller museums located
throughout the city, you'll be surprised by the unique treasures

(10:44):
you might find. Some might focus on a specific historical period,
others unique art forms or scientific discoveries. Checking local listings
and museum websites are essential as exhibits and opening our
can vary. Philadelphia's magic lies not only in its famous landmarks,

(11:06):
but in its intricate details, the unexpected corners, and the
genuine warmth of its residence. This journey beyond the Liberty
Bell is just the beginning of your Philadelphia adventure, a
journey into the heart of a city. Excuse me that
it's constantly evolving, yet forever retaining its unique charm. We

(11:31):
only scratch the surface, and there are countless more hidden
gems to be discovered. Embrace the unexplained wonder and a
curious spirit and prepare to experience Philadelphia in a way
you never thought possible. This is your invitation to discover
the authentic Philadelphia, a city that will surprise, delight, and

(11:52):
leave a lasting impression on your heart. It's a city
that rewards those who take the time to explore beyond
on the well trodden paths, to uncover the stories whispered
in its alley ways and echoed in its vibrant neighborhoods.
So let's continue this exploration, one gym at a time.
So next time we're going to head into We're gonna

(12:15):
some deep dives into exploring some neighborhoods and a lot
of Phillies diverse communities. See if I find of examples
like South Philly past the Young Avenue. So we're going
to go. I mean some of these I have obviously
never heard of. So I'm looking I'm looking forward to

(12:37):
this journey. To be honest with you, I bet you
I'm going to end up knowing more about Philadelphia than
my wife knows. Not really, but anyway, that's fun to
think about. So anyway, good morning, I have a great day,
and I look forward to see you in your next time.
God bless y'all,
