Speaker 1 (00:07):
Another wild week in the NFL. Some teams that have
been on a losing streak finally turn it around. Plus
five service members were rescued after a military aircraft fell
or plunged into some contested, tricky waters. We've got the
nightmare of the Nimtz coming up. We'll give you the
(00:27):
deats on that. I'm Kate Delaney. I hope you had
a great weekend. But first we always kick it off
with the rundown. Yeah, let's talk about the hurricane. This
is what's on everyone's mind. Hurricane Melissa expected to continue
(00:48):
to intensify, which it has Sunday night and now into Monday.
Reaching the top scale of CAT five is the concern
because Cat five is forget about it. It's storm surge,
it's intense rain, it's flooding. It's the worst of the worst.
It can level, it can level anything in its path instantly.
(01:11):
Let's face it. And now it's supposed to hit Jamaica.
It's either gonna be a high end CAT four or
this Cat five. It's an extreme threat. So Jamaica, Haiti
and the Southern Dominican Republic will face the worst of
the storm into this upcoming week. Wow, I mean, they're
(01:34):
talking about rainfall totals up to thirty inches expected from
Melissa and in parts of Jamaica. So Jamaica's not only
get that rain though, but they're gonna have to contend
with the winds. And most of the extreme winds will
happen as it's tracking near Jamaica on Monday in to Tuesday,
(01:57):
so that means down trees and power outage, structural damage,
all of that could be widespread. All public hospitals have
been in emergency mode since Thursday evening. They've stopped outpatient
and elective procedures to ensure more beds are open. They're
doing everything they can to prepare for the worst. People
who could get out of Jamaica did. Jamaica's airports are closed.
(02:21):
They closed after their last scheduled arriving flight at eight
o'clock local time there Saturday evening. So there's nowhere that
will escape the wrath of the hurricane. According to Jamaica's
Meteorological Service. They're saying they can't. They're not gonna lie
(02:42):
to people. They're saying it's barely moving. It's a significant challenge,
and the prediction is we don't know exactly everything that's
going to take place. But we know that this is
not going to be good. I mean, the peak storm
surge heights could reach thirteen feet above ground level. So
they're just telling people sandbags, plywood, anything overhanging branches, get
(03:06):
rid of them, all of that. If you are in
a flood prone area, they're saying, have some kind of
an evacuation plan. I think what this man said is
what many were thinking.
Speaker 2 (03:18):
Those getting ourselt of compared we don't know, hoping for
the best.
Speaker 3 (03:21):
I did.
Speaker 1 (03:21):
Don't come hoping for the best. Yeah, I mean, that's
all you can do, hoping for the best.
Speaker 4 (03:27):
All right.
Speaker 1 (03:27):
It's another dicey week. The government shut down lax. They
had to shut it down for a couple of hours
because they didn't have air traffic controllers. We're in today,
twenty six of the government shut down, no resolution and site.
The Senate left on Thursday. They don't return until Monday afternoon,
and in past for sure will stretch into at least
(03:47):
a couple days. I think it goes for the whole week.
There is a separate Republican back bill to pay federal
employees and contractors to continue to work during the lapse
and appropriations, but that didn't advance last week week, so
they're going to try to push that through. Senator Ron
Johnson is trying to get people to jump on the
side of that, but SNAP is going to run out.
(04:11):
So the SNAP, which of course is the government of
food stamps, basically that's what we're talking about, and that
shuts down on the first. There are people who are
not getting paid and they will continue to not be paid.
Some of the essential workers are in that category, right,
(04:31):
and they don't get unemployment, so they can't employ, can't
apply for unemployment. Here's House Minority Leader Keem Jeffries over
the weekend on no way will the Dems agree to
a continuing resolution.
Speaker 5 (04:45):
As Democrats, we've made the case that we are not
going to support a partisan republican spending bill that continues
to gut the healthcare of the American people. In an
environment where the cost of living in this country is
already too high. Donald Trump pro to lower costs on
day one. Costs having gone down, they're going up. Electricity
bills are through the roof, housing costs are up, Inflation
(05:08):
is up, grocery costs are up, and now tens of
millions of people in Georgia and in beyond are facing
the very real possibility that they will be unable to
afford a doctor when they need one. We're talking about
a situation where many people will confront increased healthcare cost
of one thousand to two thousand dollars per month. That's
(05:31):
twelve to twenty four thousand dollars in additional cost per year.
When more than ninety percent of the people who receive
affordable care at tax credits make around sixty two thousand
dollars a year. It's unaffordable, it's unsustainable, and it's unconscionable.
That's why we are demanding that our Republican colleagues sit
back down at the table.
Speaker 1 (05:54):
Well, nobody's sitting back down at any table so far,
so we'll see what this weak brings. The presidents on
Saturday said, okay, Canada, you're gonna get your tariffs increase.
He was furious about a tariff ad with Reagan that
used that used former President Reagan and it and the
(06:21):
ad itself. What it did was it manipulated his words,
but he was talking about the tariff here. It is.
Speaker 6 (06:32):
The only people though, when I tariffs inevitably lead to
retaliation by foreign.
Speaker 4 (06:37):
Countries and the triggering of fierce trade wards. Then the
worst happens, marcut, shrink and collapse. Business as and industry
shutdown and millions of people lose their jobs.
Speaker 1 (06:51):
So then, like I said, the President said, okay, so
now I'm going to raise tariffs on Canada by ten
percent over this Ontario ad because over the weekend, it
was shown on Friday during the Jay's game, and it
was shown on Saturday again. The ad that you just
heard and what the President said on truth Social is
(07:13):
because of the serious misrepresentation of the facts and hostile act,
I'm increasing the tariffs on Canada by ten percent over
and above what they are paying now. The ad campaign
released by the Canadian province of Ontario, uses audio from
a nineteen eighty seven radio address which you just heard.
They're delivered by Reagan, in which he explains that despite
(07:34):
putting tariffs on Japanese semiconductors, which that was what that
was about that year, he was committed to free trade
policies and he said, while tariffs can look patriotic, over
the long run, such trade barriers heard every American worker
and consumer, and they lead to fierce trade wars and
result in lost jobs. So that's what they were talking about,
(07:55):
the manipulation. Here's what Doug Ford, the premiere from Ontario said.
Speaker 6 (08:00):
The only people that win and a terror four are
the people around the world that don't necessarily see eyed
with us and with the United States.
Speaker 1 (08:12):
Yeah, there you go, all right. So US Treasury Secretary
Scott Besson, he was in a part of the Sunday
Swirl on the NBC's Meet the Press, he called the
ad a kind of propaganda against US citizens. US citizens.
By the way, US Navy Seahawk helicopter FA eighteen F
Super Hornet fighter jet went down in separate South China
(08:35):
sea incidents. Luckily everybody was rescued, Thank goodness. But wow,
to see that happen back to back, you hardly ever
ever ever see that. Coming up, we go to the
man Cave.

I'm going to the man Cave, going to the marri Caave,
going to the marri Cave, going to the ma Cave.
Speaker 1 (12:18):
Thanks, and yes we are in the man Cave. Curious
about how I got that name. Somebody asked me that.
Chris asked me that the other day listening to us
in the Great State of Louisiana in New Orleans, and
I said, uh, it's Invade the Man Cave. I wrote
a book called Invade the Man Cave. Covered sports and
(12:38):
news for a very very long time, used to fly
with the Cowboys, cover the Giants, covered all the NFL
teams and sports galore. And I talk all about that
in that book and also really deal your own destiny
the same thing. You can get them on Amazon, all right,
let's dive into this weekend on this Sunday night game. Wow,
(13:00):
it was so such a low scoring game and then
things completely flipped around. It was crazy, and watching that
is like, ah, this game is so boring. It was
so boring to me. And even though I love football,
right I'm watching, I'm watching, I'm waiting for some big
plays to happen. But how about this Tucker Craft a
(13:20):
couple of big touchdowns for him. Green Bay ended up
beating the Pittsburgh Steelers, who had on these bizarre throwback unis.
By the way, but the vital score at thirty five
twenty four, so the Packers are five to one and one,
the Steelers four and three now as a result of that,
(13:42):
and it was one of those days where you had
teams that desperately needed at least I think moral wins
something to lift them up. That's a good way to
put it. My nephew, I've said this a couple of
different times as a videographer for the Miami Dolphins, and
it is needless one of the worst years they've had.
(14:03):
They went into the game against the Falcons one and
six at Mercedes Benz Stadium in Atlanta, and things certainly
turned out different differently for them. Take a listen to
a couple of tds.
Speaker 16 (14:20):
First down run and back to pass Tua and here
he goes, and that's a touchdown caught by a Han
and the first touchdown pass thrown by two A tunnel
via looa in from the nine, first and goal, no
timeouts Tua and he got the block on the play
and he.
Speaker 3 (14:39):
Pros caught touchdown low way Washington.
Speaker 7 (14:44):
So far effects today.
Speaker 16 (14:46):
Ten play at the drive, here they come, here.
Speaker 1 (14:48):
He goes, Wada, look at them tie Duke.
Speaker 3 (14:51):
Can't kiss having goodbye WAA. Touchdown for three yards.
Speaker 1 (14:58):
Yeah, it was good. So for two Voa, they've had
three games they've lost in a row. They stopped the
skid and he looked pretty good in this one, a
season high four touchdown passes for him. So the Dolphins
were psyched about that win to pick up their second
on the season, and UH twenty of twenty six passes
(15:18):
two hundred and five yards spread the ball around. It
was probably one of their best games in a long time.
For the Falcons, they were without their quarterback Michael Pennix Junior,
and a couple of their top wide receiver Drake London
and of course their sack leader Zach Harrison. But all
coaches will tell you, hey, you got to deal with
what you got. You know, everybody has to deal with injury.
(15:40):
So it was a rough day for them and a
big day for Miami. Same thing for the Jets. Wow,
I was surprised by this. Shame on the Bengals because
they really had this thing bagged and then they and
then they you know, at the end, they blew it.
So take a listen to the Jets beating the Bengals.
Speaker 12 (16:02):
Down the stretch. Hole boy thought about it.
Speaker 8 (16:04):
Now tosses to the episode Who's Taylor for the Jets?
Speaker 15 (16:08):
Touchdown?
Speaker 1 (16:12):
Yeah, thirty nine, thirty eight the final score, and the
Jets were pretty psyched obviously to pick that up. So
they're one and seven. That was our first win. They
needed to break it open. I'll tell you what, Justin
Fields was very excited after that game. I listened to
a little bit of the post game and he said,
(16:35):
there are so many doubters, and I just pushed the
doubt aside. We have our own little world here. Two
hundred and forty four passing yards and a touchdown for
him and a big win for them because they need
to at least get on the board and not have
a big old bagel. Buccaneers bounce back after their loss
last week. They beat the Saints twenty three to three.
(16:56):
The Texans knocked off the forty nine ers. They picked
up their third in Houston twenty six fifteen the Cowboys
and the Broncos. I thought this was gonna be a
much closer game. Yes, the Cowboys have the worst defense
in the league and it showed because they were never
in it really from the very beginning. When they had
the opportunities to be in it, they blew it. So
(17:18):
Bo Nicks and the Rookies go to this forty four
to twenty four win over the Cowboys. They extend the
home win streak to nine. Running Back R J. Harvey
scored three times. Wide receiver Pat Bryant caught his first
NFL touchdown. How about that? And that's what it was.
The defense was not there for the Dallas Cowboys, and
(17:41):
then the offense when they had a couple of times,
a couple of chances where they should have scored, they
didn't find a way to put enough points on the
board or point any points on the board. So there
you go. You know, here's the thing. You know, they've
got great players, and they have had some great moments,
but they're not pulling it all together. And it sounds
(18:04):
like the same old tune, right. And for the Broncos,
they're six and two, six and two, so you can
imagine people are pretty excited about that. All right. Some
of the other games, I'll just pepper them in here.
I won't get through them all. So the Colts are
now seven to one. They beat the Titans thirty eight
to fourteen. That was expected, right, It would have been
(18:26):
a chakra was the opposite way. The Patriots are six
and two, yes they are. They beat the Browns thirty
two thirteen. The Eagles are six and two as well.
They knocked off the Giants thirty eight to twenty four.
Jalen Hurts one hundred and seventy nine passing yards and
forty d's. The Bills smashed the Panthers to pick up
(18:51):
their fifth win, forty nine forty to nine the final score.
And the Ravens, that's that other team that picked up
a much needed win by beating the Bears thirty sixteen
thirty sixteen. Derrick Henry, he's such a difference maker a
couple of touchdowns for him, and that was a big
(19:14):
highlight for the Ravens because they haven't had a lot
to get excited about this season. It's the Commanders and
the Chiefs wrappings up on Monday night, can you believe it?
And then we slip into how did this season slip
away so fast? Then we slip into Week nine? Ooh,
(19:38):
week nine already? All right, major League Baseball post season?
Where are we? We are pretty interesting? The first game out, Wow,
the Dodgers all over the Blue Jays and the I
mean the blue Jays all over the Dodgers. And then
the second game it was the opposite. It was the
(20:00):
Dodgers coming back to tie things up. I think heading
into this, I said, the Blue Jays to really be
in this thing, need to at least split at home.
And so that's the good thing. That's what they did.
They split, and it was it was a five to
one Dodger come back in that game two. But the
(20:23):
first game out of the shoot, wow, and Yamamota just
pitched incredible nine innings, only four hits, that's all, that's
it at eight strikeouts. It was great pitching that made
such a difference there and then the Dodgers getting the
hits like Muncie with a bunch, that's what they needed.
But in the other game, the first game out of
the shoot, the Blue Jays just crushed the Dodgers eleven
(20:48):
four to come out and take that one game. Like
I said, they needed at least that one game, and
they got it. It was hot bats all the way around.
So you know, somebody said to me, this is gonna
be a Dodger sweep, and I said, I don't think
it's gonna be Dodgers sweep. The Blue Jay fans have
waited thirty two years to, you know, cheer about something exciting,
(21:12):
and they got that at a World Series home run.
And how about that, I mean Addison Barger launched the
first pitch Grand Slam and Fall classic history, and they
just was madness. Their bats were insane. They were so
so so alive, right, and the Dodgers are heavily favored,
(21:33):
to repeat, let's face it, so they never could catch up.
They trailed that entire game. But now this series switches
to Los Angeles, so you have this one and one
series where the Dodgers host the Blue Jays and you
(21:53):
got Max Scherzer on the mound. Max Scherzer, who has
come big, come up big. He's old dude for pictures
on this team, but it's come up big in so
many instances in the postseason, and he may come up
big for Toronto. But we'll see that Dodger crowd is
going to be super loud, just like Toronto was.
Speaker 4 (22:15):
Though.
Speaker 1 (22:15):
That's the whole thing. So it's shifting back to La
one thing. We know we won't have any of those terrifats.
They're not gonna run during this but the premiere of
Ontarios and they were cutting them out as of Monday,
So how about that. So Scherzer, by the way, becomes
the first picture to take them out for four different
teams in the World Series. Stay with us. Wow, I
(22:57):
can't wait to introduce you to Seth Ryan and he
is so amazing and he has lived so many lives.
He's got a podcast he just launched called Old Ranger,
New Dad. He and his wonderful wife Mallory have a
child through ivf Archer and another one on the way.
(23:18):
He talks about that on his podcast. Also he talks
about his service the time in the military. And I'll
tell you what he was part of the seventy fifth
Army Ranger Regiment. Wait to hear that story. He was
also a private contractor stuck in bag Dad during COVID,
So imagine that and what that was like for you know,
(23:41):
his family, and there's so much more to the Seth
Ryan story. He truly is an amazing American and we
are pleased to welcome to the show. Thank you so
much for coming on, Seth.
Speaker 2 (23:50):
Thank you, Kate. I've really looked forward to it and
have already enjoyed getting to know you better.
Speaker 1 (23:55):
So let's talk about your road to the military. What
drove you in that direction? How'd that come about in
the first place.
Speaker 2 (24:03):
Great question that my parents still ask me ironically, because
I was raised that we don't we don't join the military.
My dad had tried to join the Navy. He had
got in and then he was very discontent, and it
was during during the Carter administration. So he literally got on,
as Harley wrote, off the ship and never came back.
So my upbringing was in the military. They control you,
(24:27):
they own you. If you get a sunburn, that's damage
to government property. So I was very much I wouldn't
say against, but I just never really thought I would
actually go that direction. It wasn't until I had graduated
high school and now I'm working construction full time during
the day and taking college classes at night that I
(24:48):
just looked around at my life and thought, I have
to I have to take a leap somewhere. And there's
nothing else that I could really do because I don't
have money or connections or anything else at that point.
So I saw a group of Marines walking through the mall,
and they were jacked and happy and wearing Marine Corps shirts,
(25:08):
and I thought, yeah, that sounds like something that would
be a good challenge and maybe I could Maybe I
could do that, maybe, And so I go talk to
the recruiter. I had to hunt a recruiter down, and
after it was all said and done, my mom cried
a little bit. My dad wasn't happy. But I had
my date to ship out to Marine Corps boot camp
and I had enlisted in September tenth of nineteen ninety nine.
(25:33):
There was no war. There was never going to be
a war, right Our last engagement was Desert Storm. I
remember as a ten year old the whole war was
seventy two hours. That's what I remember. From the news.
So I ended up, you know, enlisting in the Marine Corps,
and I just wanted the hardest job in the military.
And the recruiter talked me into infantry heavy weapons specialists
(25:55):
in the Marine Corps. He said, there is no job
that you can't know. There are some reserve seals, there's
some reserve special Forces, but you have to come off
active duty to do those jobs. This is the hardest
job you can do training wise, in the reserves, in
the military, as far as the training goes. So that's
what I went in and did and how I ended
(26:16):
up in the Marine Corps.
Speaker 1 (26:17):
Wow. And then eventually that dovetails into you being a
member of the seventy fifth Army Ranger Regiment, where you
find yourself in a situation. Listen people where he is
right there during the Jessica Lynch raid. Remember that. Wow,
take us to that moment and what it was like
(26:38):
to be part of that regiment.
Speaker 2 (26:41):
So I, ironically, coming from the Marine Corps, there's the
rivalry between and I always noticed one interesting thing was
that the Marine Corps didn't really talk down about seals,
they didn't talk down about special Forces, they didn't talk
down about PJS. They took every opportunity to talk down
(27:02):
about the Army Rangers, and I always put a mental
note there and thought, yeah, yeah, Army guys, they want
to be tough like us. But that didn't sit well
with me because usually when you're picking on somebody else
that you don't even know of them, there's something there.
And so when I actually started talking to other people
that football coaches from high school, and I started talking
(27:26):
to people that I knew that had been in the
military or raised a military brat, you know, kind of
their whole life around them, they said, we don't know
what they do. We've all watched Blackhawk down, you know,
at that point. But all I know is that no
one likes them except themselves. No everyone respects them, but
(27:46):
nobody likes Rangers except for Rangers. And again, this was
just a anecdotal statement by somebody who, you know, vaguely
heard about the Rangers. But that that intrigued me. So
I initially signed up for for a different contract to
try to go in Special Forces. But I didn't have
a I had never taken a foreign language in high school,
(28:08):
and so I wasn't eligible for it because I have
to learn another language to even be in Special Forces.
It's a big part of their mission. So the recruiters like, okay,
well you signed that contract, you can't do it now.
You know what other contractor we're gonna we're gonna get
you in. And I said, hey, I only go up.
So if I'm coming from the Marine Corps, I'm only
(28:30):
going to go into something as hard or harder than
what I'm currently doing. And so that's how I ended up.
I actually had to fight with my recruiter A little
bit long story there, but I ended up getting a
Ranger contract. But here was the trick. Because I was
already Marine Corps. That means that my initial training supersedes
(28:51):
the Army, So I don't go through Marine Corps or
I'm an Army basic training. I just skip that. And
I don't have to go through infantry school because the
Marine Corps infantry supersedes the Armies. So I could go
straight into an Army infantry unit without any training. I would,
you know, have to go through a couple of weeks
of like getting my uniforms and all those things. But
(29:15):
the Ranger contract was not so simple. They had all
of theirs locked in a pipeline so if you were
already prior service and your training superseded, it actually works
against you because they can't break the contract up and
then just have you show up halfway through training. So
I was like, well, dang it, you know, how in
(29:36):
the world am I going to get in here? There's
got to be a way. And then the recruiter finally
called me one morning and said, hey, there's a Ford
Observer contract. I know you're probably not gonna want it
because you want infantry, but you know it is ranger regiment. Again,
not knowing much of anything, I said, well, I've worked
with a few. I've seen a couple of Ford Observers
while I was in the Marines, and those were hardcore guys.
(29:58):
So yeah, let's do it now. There was no Google
like there is today. I just jumped. I literally had
no idea what I was about to do. I didn't
know what a ranger was. And when I graduated the
day before graduation, I've already made it through ranger indoctrination,
through the selection phase. I literally raised my hand and
(30:19):
the instructors like, ask any questions. I'm like, so what
do we actually do as rangers? We see what the
history is we've done all these well, what do we
actually do? I'm a Ford observer And he's like, Oh, yeah,
you're gonna have a really really cool job. You call
in air strikes, You're trained to call in anything in
the United States Military, Air Force, Army, Navy, Marine Corps.
(30:42):
You can call it all in and you're gonna be
the best there is. That's the ranger standard sit down,
and I was like, Okay, I guess that's what I
do now. Everybody looked at me because they didn't know
what a Ford observer was at all. All these guys
just came through training, basic training. So that there I
am sitting there not no really still what I was doing.
I got a tan berry on my head. I'm headed
(31:04):
to first Ranger Battalion in Savannah, Georgia. But I still
don't know what a ranger does exactly. And so that
that was that was a wild trans transfer over to
that type of mentality. The Marine Corps definitely has its
own very hardcore but very very disciplined. And don't don't
(31:25):
get me wrong when I say this, the difference that
everybody asks, what's the big difference the Marine Corps? I
was a I was as locked on as a human
can be. My my brain was working like a machine.
I was so focused on anything that I wanted to
do that it was It was very, very incredible for
(31:47):
other people to have seen me transform from who I was,
is this self doubting, overweight kid into this focused, you know,
works out three times a day machine that I became
came having become a marine. Then I go into the Rangers.
We're still working out three times a day. We're doing
(32:08):
it as a group and we're doing very like we're
pushing hum v's around the entire base, which is like
twelve miles around. We're also going through the water. We're
doing swim calls. We're running miles over to a pool,
swimming a mile in the pool, then running miles back,
getting on a bike and riding my like it's insane
(32:29):
type of physical physicality you have to have in the
Range regiment. But the Rangers have to get it done
no matter what. And I would say that brings an
edge of I wouldn't say brigands and hooligans, but I
would say that that is a that's a kind of
(32:51):
a thing that we toss around amongst each other playfully,
that there were kind of there on that line between
we're gonna do some whatever we need to to get
the job done, whether we're overseas and we need to
hot wire cars and then use those stop vehicles and
commandeer them. Like you learn all that in Special Ops.
(33:12):
You don't learn that in the Marine Corps.
Speaker 1 (33:13):
Wow, it's incredible to hear these stories. And your very
first combat mission was the Jessica Lynch Space Trade.
Speaker 2 (33:20):
Yeah, so that we had trained for the invasion and
that that mission, which I've never actually talked about that.
So the very first mission we trained for was the invasion,
and the initial idea was the entire seventy fifth Ranger Regiment. Now,
so people understand there's roughly around five hundred people in
(33:42):
each Ranger battalion, but that they've expanded since I left.
They added another company and added you know, more support people.
This was just everybody's a gun totter, you know, except
for the cooks and those things. So you're talking about
five hundred for first Battalion, five hundred for second, five
hundred for third, and then the seventy fifth Ranger Regiment
(34:04):
actually has a group of people that are the command
and that's a much smaller size and it's it's mostly
people that are in charge, but it also had some
other elements to it. So all together, let's just round
up and say, there's you know, eighteen hundred total rangers
that are going to be jumping out of an airplane
(34:25):
to invade.
Speaker 12 (34:26):
Iraq coming up.
Speaker 1 (34:27):
As we continue our conversation with Seth Ryan, imagine being
on that mission to Iraq and you're rescuing Jessica Lynch.
How did that all go down? Find out next on atm.

You're back with Seth. Ryan Seth tell us about the
Jessica Lynch rescue.
Speaker 2 (38:00):
So that was the very first mission we ended up it.
We didn't get green lit for it. We loaded up
in the planes to do it. It didn't. It didn't happen.
So now we're just kind of sitting there like, Okay, well,
now what are we doing. Everybody's going across the border
to go take over the whole country where we going
and they're like, we just got word that there was
(38:20):
a ambush. We don't know for sure the situation with
all of the people, but turns out it was a
I think it was a doctor. It was at the
hospital where Jessica Lynch was actually at in All nauzarea.
So he's at that hospital he sees this American woman
come in. Evidently he probably witnessed what happened to her
(38:43):
compatriots that were all executed and killed. He then leaves
on foot, walks twelve miles through the desert to where
he knew that a American checkpoint was at that time,
and he walks up to them and says, hey, hey,
there's an American woman. She's held at this hospital. Now,
(39:04):
it's a good thing that they didn't shoot him thinking
he might have a bomb. This was the invasion, so
a lot of stars had to align for this to happen.
We get the word that we have a mission going
and they don't tell us anything about it. We load
up on planes and they're like, yeah, we're gonna go
do a mission. We'll tell you when you get there.
So we land and we're nine point one miles from
(39:26):
the hospital and it was bunkers where they have the
airplanes and jets that Saddam had deering desert storm. They
were all bombed out, so that's where we're just hiding
under that for shade, and from there they tell us
we're going to get at least one girl, Jessica Lynch.
They've identified her specifically as being still alive. We don't
(39:49):
know about the rest. But no matter what, we're bringing
everybody home. We have to wear chemical suits the entire
mission and the entire time we're waiting for them to
mustard gas us because that's what Tom had swore he
was going to do. So the whole time we're there,
think of sewing three Sawa suits together. Now put all
that on on top of the eighty pounds of gear
(40:10):
you're carrying and all your ammo, which we carry more
ammo than any other unit in the military. And we
were going with all of that into what we know
of is a booby trap, like they know that we're coming,
and here we are coming. Anyways, that mission, ironically was
the time that I met Pat Tillman, so the football
(40:33):
player from the Cardinals, very beloved guy.
Speaker 4 (40:38):
You know.
Speaker 2 (40:38):
He was from second Range of Battalion, and they had
brought elements from each of the Ranger battalions for this mission,
and we were the primary element, So I don't know
what he was doing on the mission. We were the
ones who actually went to the side of the hospital,
which they had about a eight foot brick wall around
the hospital and on the back side of the hospital
(41:01):
was a military barracks. So they in Iraq, just like
the rest of the Middle East, they know you build
your military barracks around the hospital so that the Americans
won't drop bombs on you. That's their thought process. So
we already know going into a hospital, it's not just
a hospital, it's literally got this big, huge cinderblock wall
around it and an entire military barracks with who knows
(41:24):
what kind of booby traps. So that's what we walk into.
We end up blowing my guys, Me and my guys
blow a hole in the side of the wall. We
actually come in through the side of the wall, so,
you know, like they wouldn't anticipate. Then we go take
over all of the buildings. Luckily for everyone, they actually
had vacated. They already knew we're coming. They vacated everything,
(41:46):
so there was only a few people that were still
around that came out and tried to you know, shoot
their gun off at us and you know, be a hero.
And they got dealt with very quickly. And I was
actually at the hospital front doors taking a knee when
Jessica started coming out and the PJS and then silteam
(42:06):
six guys that actually carried her out. I was standing
there watching through night vision as they were loading her
onto the helicopter. Then she takes off and now we're
still in the rescue operation. We've still got to find
where her compatriots are, where her friends were that she
was captured with, and that's where they ended up being
(42:27):
buried in a shallow grave and they had to be
dug up and we carried all of them back and
so that's wow, wow.
Speaker 1 (42:38):
Thank you for your service. Your stories are absolutely incredible,
and I feel compelled to tell people. This is anybody
who's a game or two. By the way, as an
aside Task Force one forty one, you told me this
off their call of duty right right.
Speaker 2 (42:52):
Call of Duty. I'm literally playing the task force that
I was on. Now here's the crazy part though, When
we were actually in Iraq, I forgot about that, so
I wasn't ever into gaming. I was when everybody else
was playing video games and watching movies while we're overseas,
I was just working out NonStop. That's how I survived mentally.
I didn't want to escape. I wanted to be as
(43:15):
ready as I possibly could. But all the guys in
my platoon would always be online playing Call of Duty
and during the day when they were awake, because we
worked only at night, so we were asleep during the
day and then worked all night, and they would be
just sitting there playing Call of Duty. Then literally go
out on an actual mission as Task Force one for one.
(43:37):
You know, Call of Duty didn't have that in it
yet back then they didn't even know about one for one.
But they're sitting there playing games where they're shooting at
people and then they go do it in real life
and then come back to their saved game and jump
back online. And it was pretty surreal to me. I've
always thought that was funny.
Speaker 1 (43:53):
Wow, no kidding. And I want to mention this just
briefly too, because I said this in the beginning. You
did go back for more because during COVID you were
there as a private contractor with your crazy mad skills.
I can totally see that. But then you're away for
how many years? And how did that all happen?
Speaker 2 (44:11):
You got stuck so and this is something that I'm
definitely going to share a little bit more about. You
give me, You give me a little bit of praise
there that I don't know that's warranted. I was just
a very lucky person who happened to be at the
right place. And I would say kind of like you
did and deal your own destiny in your book, and
(44:32):
this was something I wanted to share. When you said
leap and the net will find you, that resonates with
my entire life. And the hard part about that when
you try to tell somebody that is that they don't
understand what the net is. I've always said I jump
out of airplanes and sew my parachute on the way,
and that's how I've went from the Marines to the
(44:54):
rangers to a police officer for years. I worked in
fed prison for a while and then went and worked
on oil rigs and all of those jobs are as
dangerous as you can find, but all of them was
to me. It was God leading me in different directions.
(45:15):
All of those things led to I'm not able to
have kids. Naturally, it turned out it was me, not
my wife. As we got tested, and so as we're
looking at IVF, we realize we don't have the money
for IVF and that's the only way that it's going
to happen. So to answer your question, I looked in
(45:35):
the subsequent statement that you put is that your network
is the net, right, that's what you learned. It's the
leap knowing that you have a network of advocates there
to catch you. And what happened. I need money, I
have a skill set. It's dangerous, but I can go
do this. And I literally called the Air Force guy,
(45:55):
not the ranger the Air Force guy who was there
with me actually on the Just Clinch operation. He had
left and went to Blackwater when it very first opened.
Nobody knew what Blackwater was. It was this new thing.
They're like, yeah, you can be a contractor and make
tons of money. He left the Air Force special upside
and went and did contracting well. He still had all
of his contacts in the contracting world. So I call
(46:17):
him and said, hey, brother, I need money. I'm not
going to be able to start a family without it.
I need to do IVF. How can I get overseas?
And he said, hey, man, the money isn't as good
as it was, but I'm pretty sure if you're smart
with it, you can make it work. He made one
phone call, called me back, said hey, email this guy,
call him, send him your resume and you should be
(46:39):
good to go. And that's exactly how it happened. And ironically,
at that time, you know, there wasn't a lot of
things going on. Nobody knew COVID was around the corner.
We're just I'm just living my life and wanting to
start a family with my wife. I end up signing
that contract with them, but they said it might take
you nine months to a year to get through the paperwork.
(47:00):
How about you come on as a recruiter and recruit
your own team to go over there with. So that's
how I ended up being an actual recruiter for Triple Canopy.
The two big companies were Triple Canopy that was started
by the Delta Force guys, and then there was the
Seals started Blackwater. Blackwater was started first, but literally very
(47:20):
on its on its heels was Triple Canopy. Those were
the two big companies. Now they're both bought and owned
by one conglomerate known as Constellus. So I worked for
Constellus under the Triple Canopy umbrella, and I literally recruited
guys that I then went overseas and worked with, and
I got pictures with them and I got to visit
with them. Was like, dude, this is so freaking awesome.
(47:41):
I'm literally getting to just chill with these guys that
I handpicked that I knew were solid guys. And that
was that was how I ended up being a contractor.
I just happened to be the last plane in December ninth,
December of twenty nineteen, on the nineteenth, I believe too.
December nineteenth of twenty nineteen was my date that I
(48:02):
flew in. It was the last plane to land at
the Baghdad International Airport. After that, no other planes were
allowed in because of the embassy attacks January one.
Speaker 5 (48:12):
Wow.
Speaker 1 (48:13):
