It wasn’t until serving a mission for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints that I found the power that comes through faith in Jesus Christ. I discovered for myself the truth that if we “lose our lives for His sake, [we] find it.” This testimony was foundational for my psychological studies going forward as I found more and more people spinning in the web of mental illness. Through it all, I realized we don’t understand mental conditions very well, and we do pretty poorly at treating symptoms. I knew Christ had to be brought to the forefront for people, because although we understand little of what makes up psychology (and even less when we account for individual differences), He understands each of us perfectly and personally. “Draw near unto me and I will draw near unto you,” He beckons. I knew the most effective thing a person could do is become acquainted with their personal Savior, and experience the reality of His healing power for themselves.
