Speaker 1 (00:00):
Magnesium is flammable. It's not corrosion

(00:02):
resistant and apparently a realhead scratcher for why Workshop
would use it as a handlematerial on their new knife, the
RMX. At least that's what theInternet thinks. But here's the
thing. They're wrong, mostly.
We're gonna dive into that andmore on the return of the EDC
weekly.

Speaker 2 (00:19):
Hey. I told you it's not the EDC weekly. Stop it.

Speaker 1 (00:24):
Let's do the damn thing. Welcome back to the EDC
weekly. Is that does that feellike home? My arms wide open?
We're back.
The EDC weekly is back, sort of.So we've tried to bring this
thing back, like, I don't know,a dozen times now. And every
single time it felt more forced. And the more I felt like it was

(00:47):
just a little long in the toothand maybe a little outdated. No
matter how many times I tried totweak it or change it, the EDC
Weekly just felt forced.
So we turned it into anewsletter back in October, I
believe it was. And that's beena lot of fun except for the fact
that very quickly it turned intome up until one or 2AM on

(01:07):
Thursday night trying to work onthis thing and get it finished
just three hours before it wentout to the world. It was
unsustainable. It got old quick, but we're not done with the
newsletter, not even close. Butthis this series, I feel like it
deserves its own identity.
It's not the EDC Weekly. That'sThat's the newsletter now. The
newsletter is gonna stay the EDCWeekly. This series here on

(01:30):
YouTube is my way of gettingback into doing stuff that
involves the community, and weare gonna call it deep cuts. And
it's also gonna have an audioonly version, so if you wanna
listen to it on your drive towork or whatever, there will be
an audio only version as well, which will be a little weird for
some of the segments where I'mshowing things on camera, but
those are gonna be few and farbetween, and it's mostly gonna

(01:51):
be us talking one on one.
So this is just the gear that Iwanna show you. The cool stuff
happening, the drops that youshould know about, the comments
that I can't not reply to andmaybe deserve a little more
explanation than just a clapback, and also just fun. There's
gonna be a lot of community funin here. Giveaways. There's a
lot of giveaways, mostly over onthe newsletter, but we'll get to
that a little bit later.

(02:12):
So this is deep cuts, and I amso glad to be back. Alright.
First up, because it's alwaysthe question we get every time I
go live, every time I'manywhere, what's in your pocket?
So we're gonna do sixty secondsor less. First up, I forgot all
my gear at home today.
Oopsie. I just very bad morning. So I had this in my gym bag.
This is what I threw in mypocket, the Inkosi Ensino. I

(02:33):
also have this thing in mypocket, which is not technically
out, and I don't really knowmuch about it, but this is
called the Overlook from BigIdea Design.
No official release date or anyinformation on that yet. The
flashlight that I always comeback to is the LumenTop triple a
frog with the extension tube. Ialso have a rustic heirloom
hitchhiker. It's always thewallet that's in my pocket. And
these right here.
These dropped on my birthday,April 26. This is the new Topo

(02:55):
Zippo from Best MUDC exclusive. And the pen. We have the bronze
Pocket Pro US edition from BigEye. And, I mean, I have my
Garmin Mark as well.
So that's it. That's what's inmy pockets. So that comment I
mentioned earlier at thebeginning of the video comes
from Obsidian One. He said, there's a major reason no one is

(03:17):
using magnesium. Besides, it'snot corrosion resistant at all.
If you light magnesium and putit on a car hood, it will melt
all the way through the engineblock because you can't put it
out. So that's true. He's notentirely wrong. Magnesium does
burn very, very hot. Over 5,600degrees, and you can't put it
out with water.
It's actually pretty tough toput out. You have to use a fire
extinguisher, and I don't knowif it's even a normal fire

(03:38):
extinguisher. But here's thething. In order to ignite
magnesium, you have to shave itoff just like one of those
magnesium fire starters. You usea scraper and you shave off
little bits of it.
That, you can ignite at about883 degrees Fahrenheit. If
you're talking about an entireblock of magnesium, like on a
knife scale, it's a lot harderto ignite. You have to take a

(03:59):
torch to it over 800 degrees forsustained time, like a long time
to get that block to ignite. Butthat is just for raw magnesium.
We're not talking about rawmagnesium.
We're talking about a magnesiumalloy, which is a lot more
stable. His mindset is actuallytotally correct, because the
first thing I asked Workshopwhen they told me they were
using magnesium in the handle oftheir knife was, can you start a

(04:22):
fire with it? According to Dan,the mad genius who created this
thing, he could not get it toignite. It's a very stable
magnesium alloy. It can stillcorrode.
We actually had Dan tell usabout that in the video we made
last week when we were atWorkshop HQ. It does corrode,
and you still have to take careof it. But as far as ignition
goes, if you are worried about amagnesium handled knife igniting

(04:42):
in your pocket, one, that's notgonna happen. And two, if it
does, you've got much biggerproblems than the knife that's
burning at 5,600 degrees in yourpocket because you're probably
already incinerated. You don'texist anymore.
It's gone. You're you're gone.The knife, yeah, sure, it's
burning, but you're alreadydead. So I would say when it
comes to the skepticism orcriticism of magnesium as a

(05:04):
knife handle material, thebigger question mark really
comes to corrosion because Dantalked about that. Right?
It's one of the reasons thatthese knives come with cerakote
on them. But for me, there'sstill a question mark there.
What happens when the Cerakotewears away? Because you've got
this little button and one thatinteracts with the handle,
you're gonna eventually wearthat Cerakote away. Okay.

(05:25):
Now you have raw magnesiuminside the core mechanism of the
handle. How easily does itcorrode? We know it does, but
you have to take care of it likeanything else. You gotta wash it
out, clean it out, oil it,whatever. Okay.
Fine. You've got a corrosionissue that you have to stay
ahead of. That's fine. There aretool steel knives that I really
like because I like the way itpatinas. So you just kinda learn

(05:48):
to deal with it.
But the question is not, will itcorrode? Sure. It's probably
gonna corrode. The question ishow bad does it corrode? And if
you let it corrode on accident, can you break it loose?
Right? Can you take a hammer andjust pop that button to break it
loose? If you do that, are yougonna screw the tolerances? Is
the knife handle still usable? Can you take this thing apart

(06:10):
and scrape it out with a wirebrush and put it all back
together?
That's the big question mark forme. It's not, will it corrode?
Dan has one that he's carriedfor three years and it has
corroded and it's patinaed andit looks really nice. The patina
will actually probably help with

Speaker 3 (06:24):
the corrosion. I carry raw magnesium. So that's
literally raw magnesium. Itpatinas and looks like a dark
titanium. So this is a naturalpatina.
This has been in my pocket foralmost two and a half, three
years now. Right? You'll seewear on the edges where it's,
you know, wears on pocket andstuff. And this knife has been
through a lot for, you know, several years. And I carry

Speaker 1 (06:45):
so this this is an

Speaker 3 (06:46):
example of this one's about three weeks. I love the
way magnesium patina is. But Butif I dip this in saltwater

Speaker 1 (06:53):
Corrodes.

Speaker 3 (06:53):
And don't don't dry it and oil it right away, like,
within an hour or two, yourbutton will be stuck.

Speaker 1 (06:59):
There you go. Yeah. Circuit. Yeah. Everybody at Work
Sharp has been carrying thisknife for a very long time.
And this is not like blind faithfor me in Work Sharp. I just
feel like they wouldn't havespent years working on this
knife and developing it andchoosing to go with magnesium if
they had seen significant issueswith corrosion over the years.
It would have been easier, Ithink, if they were having

(07:21):
corrosion issues to just switchto aluminum or titanium or
another material. I don't thinkthat they would continue to move
forward if they were testing inhouse and sending out units. I
mean, they've they've soldhundreds of these already to
people at Blade Show.
I don't think they would havemoved forward if corrosion was a
massive issue. I've carried one.I haven't had any issues with
corrosion, but I've had onlyCerakote versions. So what that

(07:43):
makes me feel is that we shouldtest it. I should take some of
these that I have, we haveseveral of them, and see how
they deal with corrosion even ifthey're cerakoted and maybe see
if they'll get me a rawmagnesium one and we could also
put that through its paces justto see.
That that's where my brain goes,but I don't think that it's a
massive issue. I think it's justkind of like rust on a tool

(08:03):
steel. As long as you stay aheadof it and maintain it, it's
probably a nonissue. But as faras ignition goes and burning in
your pocket and burning throughyour engine block, I don't think
you have to worry about that. That is a question from obsidian
one.
Well, really just a comment thatI'm replying to, but if you want
me to answer a question from youor to reply to a comment, just
comment down below on any ofthese videos. We're picking them
at random, but I also would beopen to answering questions you

(08:26):
have about gear or finding theperfect piece of gear, which
takes us back to, like, completemy carry era of EDC weekly. So
leave a comment down below, andI will do my best to answer it
or get to it or do whatevermakes sense if it piques our
interests. I wanna do someinteresting stuff, so throw me
curveballs. I wanna seecurveballs in the comments.
Alright. Now we're to the carryof the week. We're still doing

(08:48):
this. We're still gonna gothrough submissions and talk
about carries and cool gear, just not the entire video. I
went through a pretty bigbacklog of submissions, and I
chose this one.
It comes from six by six Mattover on Instagram. And the
reason I chose this one isactually because I really like
what he did with the screwdriversetup. He took the seven eleven
l flathead flexible ratchetwrench that's made for the

(09:11):
Leatherman, put it on the keychain, and then he has this
thing. It's from Railer. It's abit holder that fits in his
pocket.
It's like a really compact andvery versatile pocket
screwdriver set. He's also gotlock picks and a whole bunch of
other stuff here. So he has acarry commission wazoo cash
belt, which we have in stock. Those are very cool. You can
stash stuff inside the belt.
He also has Alpaca Gear ZipPouch Pro. Quick aside with

(09:35):
that, Ricky and I have beenkicking around this idea for a
few months now about me doing awallet only EDC. So for one
whole week, I can only carrywhat I can fit in a wallet, and
the wallet I chose, if we weregonna do that, is this very
wallet. So let me know in thecomments if you would like to
see us do something kinda likethat, like a little challenge
where I have to only carry whatcan fit in a wallet. Anyway, he

(09:57):
also has a Mummert KnivesDestructor Agua Reaper cutting
card.
I think that's the thing that'ssticking out of the wallet. He
also has a Covert InstrumentsRIV pick, a seven eleven l
Flexhead EDC ratchet wrench, therailer bit holder with PB Swiss
bits, and then finally, thewatch at the top of the photo is
the Breitling Navitimer. Hesays, I may add a few things

(10:18):
depending on the day, but theseare the items that are most
always with me. I still love myalpaca wallet as the zipper
pouch keeps me from losing smallitems. I always have one or two
or three Covert Instrumentsitems with me, but the Ribpick
always stays in the wallet.
I didn't think about includingthe Wazoo belt last time I was
featured, but if I'm wearing abelt, this is the one. Plenty of
other goodies cashed in there. Istill have the Panerai, but the

(10:39):
Breitling Navitimer 46millimeter in green is on my
wrist more often than not.Lastly, I decided to add the
seven eleven l to my minimalistkey chain, and the railer bit
holder keeps my trusty PB Swissbits in place in case I need
them while away from the house. If I take much more than this, I
usually carry the Paladin thirtythree Outback Omega Ultralight.
I think I can blame Taylor forthat purchase. Sorry, not sorry.

(11:00):
It's a great bag. And this is acool carry. I just there's no
knife except for the cuttingcard.
Like, there's a cutting card, but no knife. That actually just
occurred to me. There's no knifein this photo. So kinda cool,
honestly. How much do you usethat cutting card?
I see those, like, card multitool things all the time, but
does anybody actually use them?I don't know. Anyway, if you

(11:23):
would like to submit to theshow, we're gonna do it now
through Instagram. There'sanother Instagram account called
e d c dot weekly. If you tagthat, we'll be looking through
there for submissions.
If you'd like, you can alsorequest to collaborate, and if
we choose, we'll collaboratewith you, and you could be
featured here in the deep cuts.I was about to call it the EDC
weekly, deep cuts. And now, weneed to keep the lights on, so

(11:45):
we actually, the lights are off,but we need to turn them back
on. So we need to thank ourchannel sponsors. First up, Big
Idea Design.
Obviously, they make a lot ofreally cool titanium pocket
tools and pins and now knives. And like the one I showed you
earlier, the Overlook, theirnewest is honestly by far their
best knife. It's really good. Ican't tell you much about it,

(12:07):
but if you wanna check out allof their other stuff, go hit the
link in the description downbelow and use coupon code carry
on at checkout for 10% off. Wealso wanna thank Work Sharp.
They're a huge supporter of whatwe do here. They make amazing
knife sharpeners, but now theyalso make knives. If you would
like to see more about thatknife, the RMX, go check out the
video we made last week where wevisited their headquarters. It's

(12:28):
a very cool video and honestlychanged my opinion on the
company. It makes me proud tohave them as a sponsor,
honestly.
They are a really cool companywith a cool culture. Go check
them out. And then finally, Iwanna thank Whatnot. We've been
livestreaming over on Whatnot afew times per month. It's a
livestreaming auction platformwhere they have everything from
sneakers and cards to vintageclothes and, of course, knives.

(12:48):
So hit the link in thedescription down below. Come
hang out on whatnot. If you usemy link, you'll get $15 towards
your first purchase. Okay. Thankyou guys for being channel
sponsors.
Okay. I was supposed to choose awinner for this long before now,
but here we are. This is themini Bedlam from Benchmade.
Benchmade sent this to us, andwe did a giveaway over on the
newsletter, the emailnewsletter. If you were signed

(13:10):
up, you were entered to win.
So I chose a winner earliertoday. I took a list of every
single person subscribed to thenewsletter. I put it in a
spreadsheet, and then I used arandom number generator, and the
winner was Nathan M. I'vealready been in contact with
him. He has claimed his prize.
So congrats to Nathan M. But wealso have another mini Bedlam
and several other knivesavailable for giveaway. We're
gonna be running them only overon the email. So if you're not

(13:32):
subscribed to the email list, godo that. That's at weekly dot
best m e d c dot com forwardslash subscribe.
Go there, sign up, and that'sit. You're entered to win all of
these cool giveaways. And, ofcourse, you should read the
emails because we talk aboutdrops and all sorts of other
things that are gonna beexclusive to that email list. So
go sign up. It's called the EDCweekly, unlike this video.

(13:53):
That's it. More giveaways overthere. Okay. Ricky, it's your
time to shine. We have a newsegment.
This segment is called keep, trade, toss. Ricky went through
my knife collection and chosethree things, and I get to keep
one, get to trade one, and tossone. Not really, but if I had
to, this is this is what hechose. I have to choose.

Speaker 2 (14:13):
I feel pretty good about my choices.

Speaker 1 (14:14):
Yeah? Number one. Oh.

Speaker 2 (14:18):
I might really like that.

Speaker 1 (14:19):
I do. Oh, I can't open it right now. There we go.
The Compadre Mhmm. From Kunalu.
Oh, the rosy.

Speaker 2 (14:27):
Mhmm. Oh,

Speaker 1 (14:28):
the gumbo still. That's tough. That's tough. And
the machine wise

Speaker 2 (14:33):
It's three knives that I know what

Speaker 1 (14:35):
you like. I do like all three of those.

Speaker 2 (14:36):
Are fairly hard to get, and one you just really
loved.

Speaker 1 (14:40):
That's really tough.

Speaker 2 (14:42):
Mhmm. I haven't spent much time with the Compadre, so
I would do keep the Sonora, trade the Rosie, because I know
that more people are willing totrade cool stuff for the Rosie,
toss the compadre. It's onlybecause I haven't yeah. I
haven't carried the compadre. Idon't know.
I mean, it's a nice knife. Justhaven't used it.

Speaker 1 (14:59):
Yeah. Okay. So I would keep the Compadre.

Speaker 2 (15:03):
Okay. So far, I'm kinda surprised. I would

Speaker 1 (15:06):
keep the Compadre because I think of these, it's
been been my favorite to carry, and I have been a big sucker for
a reverse tanto of the belly forthe last year or so. So keep the
compadre. Toss the machine wise.

Speaker 2 (15:21):
I'm out

Speaker 1 (15:22):
of here. Toss the machine wise.

Speaker 2 (15:23):
I'm out.

Speaker 1 (15:25):
Because if I gotta go down to brass tacks, I'm a frame
lock guy. So, I mean, I'mtrading it, but toss this, I
think, as a trade, this has morevalue than this. And I'm gonna
keep this. So Damn. Keep thecompadre, trade the rosy, toss
the machine wise.

(15:45):
I'm sorry,

Speaker 2 (15:45):
machine wise.

Speaker 1 (15:46):
I do love I do love the Sonora.

Speaker 2 (15:48):
This moment, Dylan.

Speaker 1 (15:49):
I do love it.

Speaker 2 (15:50):
Remember this moment.

Speaker 1 (15:51):
You really

Speaker 2 (15:52):
Yeah.

Speaker 1 (15:53):
Really screw me there. Thanks, man.

Speaker 2 (15:54):
You're welcome.

Speaker 1 (15:56):
And that that's it for the very first episode of
deep cuts. It feels good to beback. It it's felt wrong for far
too long to not have a communityshow. This whole channel was
built on community, and it'sfelt off ever since. But I knew
that EDC Weekly needed to beretired.
We're back. This is a lot morefun. I hope you guys enjoyed it.
And don't forget to leave me acomment down below for either

(16:17):
your spiciest take on EDC gearor a big question that you've
been trying to answer for a longtime. We obviously can't answer
them all, but if it's a reallygood one, we will try to make an
episode about it.
We'll be back next week. We'regonna do these weekly. I
promise. That's not that's notan empty promise. We will do
these every single week, and I'mvery much looking forward to it.

(16:37):
This has been a very fun format.I hope you guys enjoyed it, and
there are other segments in herethat we're not in this show that
we'll do in future shows. Soleave your comment down below.
Don't forget to sign up for theemail list so you can win a mini
