The civil rights movement emerged in response to generations of brutal oppression, including the horrific reality of lynchings, segregation, and systemic violence targeting Black Americans. Throughout history, Black communities have endured relentless attacks—from being denied basic human rights to facing mob violence designed to instill fear and suppress resistance.

Lynchings were not just acts of individual brutality; they were deliberate tools of racial terror. Thousands of Black men, women, and even children were lynched under the guise of false accusations, often publicly displayed as warnings to those who sought equality. These acts were frequently fueled by deep-seated racial hatred and were reinforced by legal systems that failed to protect Black lives.

Beyond lynchings, Black communities suffered economic discrimination, voter suppression, and violent retaliation when they attempted to exercise their rights. Resistance against these injustices shaped the civil rights movement, with activists demanding an end to racial violence and legal systems that upheld inequality. Their fight was not just for policy change—it was for survival, dignity, and the right to live freely without fear.
