Patty Jane's downfall is to marry the gorgeous but irresponsible Thor Rolvaag. Before she can say "annulment," a baby is on the way and Thor is gone, leaving Patty to rely on sister Harriet. It would be Patty Jane's entrepreneurial spirit that moves her to establish a beauty shop, her House of Curl, which evolves into a support group and community workshop over three tumultuous decades. Gently humorous and peopled with eccentric characters, Patty Jane's House of Curl is a heartwarming, deeply satisfying experience. Speaker 1 (00:00):
Learn how to love the man who used to be
thor Rolvog. Eventually I took my cue from Clyde Chuka Gramm,
i own Aunt Harriet, most especially from Patty Jane. They had,
after all, been knocked down more times and with harder
punches than I, and still found strength to stagger to
their feet. Honey, life can be a ballroom dance, my

(00:21):
mother counseled me, and it can be full of shit.
Your job in both cases is to watch where you step.
Patty Jane's got a store of words to live by,
and some of them aren't even profane. Her personal favorite,
expect the unexpected has long been the house of curl
slogan with the addendum and a good haircut too. Patty

(01:21):
Jane Dobbin's wedding dress was shell pink and of such
a high quality ray on that in the right light
it looked like satin. She had made it herself, and
although the hem wandered as if it had a mind
of its own, and one sleeve was a good and
shorter than the other, the amateur tailoring took nothing away
from the radiance of the bride. She was twenty one
years old and life bubbled inside her like a mineral spring.

(01:45):
She and her betrothed Thor Rolvog stood on that July
day in nineteen fifty three in the sanctuary of Faithful
Shepherd's Lutheran Church, and as Pastor Schulberg quized Thor on
the many obligations he would undertake as a husband. Patty
Jane wiped a line of wet from under her nose
and hoped that her dress shields would hold up. Ione

(02:05):
Rollvog stood next to her son, trying to stanch the
flow of tears that filled her eyes. She considered herself
an unsentimental woman and was surprised at the depth of
her emotions. She sniffed discreetly into her hanky and thought
of her own wedding to Olaf Rolvag in nineteen twenty nine,
held in the coastal town of Stavanger, Norway. It had
been a perfect ceremony. In nineteen thirty she and Olaf

(02:29):
had moved to Minneapolis, and Thor was born a year later.
Ione thought the good luck troll her mother made her
take to the new country was doing its job, until suddenly,
at age thirty four, she was widowed. Olaf having been
struck by a street car while playing softball. Ione thought
the service was over after the rings were exchanged, and
was surprised when Patty Jane's sister, Harriet began singing. Her

(02:52):
voice was clear and strong, its fullness rising to the
church rafters. Then sings my song, I say your God
to thee. How great thou warld, How great thou old.
Ione stared at Patty Jane's sister, and, after a moment, embarrassed,

(03:13):
she drew up her lower lip, which was hanging open. Harriet,
the few times she had met her, had always struck
I own as a coarse, cheap woman, the kind men
left crying in roadside motel rooms, the kind who sat
in saloons in the middle of the afternoon drinking beer
out of bottles. But I own believed the talent was
a gift from God and that anyone who made use
of it held a ray of light within. Ione was certain,

(03:37):
as she listened to Harriet's voice take flight, that this
woman's innards must be positively luminescent. Paster Schulberg wondered if
he should give a final personal blessing before pronouncing the
couple man and wife. This hadn't been his best marriage ceremony.
He liked a big audience filling up the pews, and
found it hard to warm up to a group of four,

(03:57):
especially when the groom was so off putting. Paster Shulberg
thought it was ghosh for a man to be so handsome.
This Thor fellow's face had the devil's work in it.
It served pride and vanity and sex. There was a
moment's silence as the last traces of Harriet's voice faded
into the summer air. Pastor Schulberg cleared his throat. Eh.

Speaker 2 (04:20):
Well, then, by the powers vested in me, I now
pronounce you man and wife. Later that night, lying in
bed in their room at the Lemington Hotel, Thor poured
Patty Jane her fourth glass of champagne. Patty Jane had
never had champagne and found that the bubbles more than

(04:40):
made up for the sour taste. To us, she said,
and stood.

Speaker 1 (04:45):
On the bed with wobbly legs, her glass raised in
a salute. We already drank to us, said Thor, dodging
some champagne that spilled from Patty Jane's glass. Oh excuse me,
to the desk clerk. Then she put
