Tony Casey's sermon, "The Humble Attitude of Christ," draws its core message from Philippians chapter 2, verses 5-11. The central imperative is that believers "must have the same attitude that Christ Jesus had". Tony defines "attitude" as "a way of thinking." It is an outlook on life. It is a position I take as I approach people, as I approach problems, as I approach the everyday exchanges that life brings". He emphasizes that this attitude is not a suggestion but an imperative command for Christianity to work effectively and for unity within the body of Christ.Key aspects of Christ's attitude highlighted in the sermon include:•Jesus setting aside His divine rights: Though He "was God, he did not think of equality with God as something to cling to" and "He had all the rights of godhood and yet he claimed none of that. He set it aside". Tony explains that this means there are times when believers must "lay aside what our particular right might be to something" for the sake of the gospel and the body of Christ. This deferral ultimately glorifies God.•Jesus willfully choosing humility: Tony stresses, "Jesus did not have a situation thrust upon him. Jesus chose humility". He notes that "Humility comes hard. Pride comes natural".A crucial action point from the sermon is to consciously choose humility. Tony explains that developing Christ's attitude is both a divine work through the Holy Spirit and a conscious exercise of one's will; "It's both". Ultimately, for Christ, "Humility in the end brought exaltation" and every tongue will confess Jesus is Lord "to the glory of God". This act of choosing humility reflects Christ's character and brings glory to God. The sermon also highlights that "Context is everything" to fully grasp and apply biblical truths.
