In this landmark first episode of Gunsmoke on television, Marshal Matt Dillon (James Arness) faces the deadly challenge of Dan Grat (Paul Richards), a fast-draw gunslinger out to prove that lawmen are just as mortal as anyone else. After killing an unarmed man in Amarillo, Grat arrives in Dodge to stir trouble—and quickly leaves a trail of bodies, including the sheriff who came to arrest him. When Matt is shot in their first encounter, the duel everyone fears becomes inevitable. With grit, patience, and a clear understanding of his opponent’s weakness, Dillon returns to face Grat one last time in a showdown that sets the tone for Gunsmoke’s legacy of justice in the Old West.
