Grigor MacGregor, a Scottish individual born in 1786. Driven by a desire for wealth and power, MacGregor fabricated the existence of a prosperous South American country called "Poyais", despite it being nothing more than a vast, uninhabitable tract of land he acquired for trivial compensation. He deceptively marketed "Poyais" through fake bonds and false reports in newspapers, attracting numerous investors and settlers who abandoned their lives for a non-existent paradise. When these unfortunate individuals arrived, they found a desolate jungle, leading to widespread suffering and death. Despite his repeated attempts to continue his fraud and several arrests, MacGregor ultimately managed to escape severe punishment and live comfortably on a military pension.
