Chaz Flood (00:00):
Definitely.
Yeah, that's a great question.
Um, the way I, I felt likeanything I, I invest in, uh,
there's always our ROI.
Um, it just depends on howmuch, right.
And so like a few things that Ihave done that I think has paid
dividends is when I firststarted getting into coaching
and started like really coachingclients, uh, I was like, I went
(00:21):
to a conference from Park.
Um, and that's like a, that'slike a, um, organization for
resume writers and careercoaches.
And
Davis Ngyuyen (00:29):
it's
Chaz Flood (00:29):
pretty popular.
Davis Ngyuyen (00:30):
Welcome to Career
Coaching Secrets, the podcast
where we talk with successfulcareer coaches on how they built
their success and the hardlessons they learned along the
way.
My name is Davis Nguyen, andI'm the founder of Purple
Circle, where we help careercoaches scale their business to
$100,000 years, $100,000 months,and even $100,000 weeks.
Before Purple Circle, I'vegrown several seven and eight
figure career coaching businessBye.
Bye.
(00:51):
Bye.
Bye.
Rexhen Doda (01:02):
Hey, everyone.
Welcome to another episode ofCareer Coaching Series podcast.
I'm your host, Regin.
Chaz Flood (01:06):
I'm just saying the
customer that I'm targeting now
is still people who are, youknow, trying to go for like top
tech companies and theirengineers and their tech
professionals.
But like, I'm pretty muchtaking, changing their mindset,
right?
From being a job seeker tobeing more of a founder, right?
And like that identity.
(01:28):
And so I call it that.
Anyway, I won't go into all mymethodology, but I'm I would say
too many people are focused onfinding jobs and that's why
they're not doing well.
And so I help these techprofessionals reposition
themselves in the market andkind of have a new identity, a
founder's identity.
Because that's where themarket's shifting, where they're
(01:49):
doing what we call, as arecruiter, we understand this,
actually hires, where they'reactually just poaching talent.
Like Meta, they just hadacquisition of a company or a
startup.
They paid three billion, butnot for the tech, not for the
salespeople, just the foundingengineering team.
When you see things like thisin a market, the way I look at
(02:11):
it is how do we take yourexisting experience and and
reframe it in a way that isappealing to companies and to
have a founder mindset and tohave a way of like taking that
and like you have a differentapproach, right?
To job seeking.
So job search becomes secondaryand your side project or
whatever you want to work on isyour main thing.
(02:32):
And so right now my customersegment is kind of shifting a
little bit.
So what's this engineers andwhat's this tech professionals
trying to land at top techcompanies?
We're still doing that, right?
But from a different angle.
And so like the person I thinkis ideal is like you have four
plus years of engineeringexperience and you are ambitious
and you want to make 200K ormake between 200K and 700K.
(02:58):
Then like that's my idealtarget.
So like and these are peoplewho are kind of ambitious, kind
of want to continue to growtheir career.
Maybe they're stuck at aceiling of like making 150K or
making 100K all in that range.
And they're trying to breakthat ceiling.
And so like the way I helpthem.
It's totally different now.
So that's kind of the marketsegment.
I'm still nailing down certainparts of it, but like, you don't
(03:21):
have to be black techprofessional now, but I do, you
know, I've had success with themmostly, but I'm here to kind of
help support any engineer ortech professionals.
Rexhen Doda (03:31):
Cool.
And when it comes to marketing, and this will be a question
that coaches who are listeningare going to find interesting
too, is where do you find yourclients or what marketing
channel works really well foryou right now?
Chaz Flood (03:42):
Yeah, I think
LinkedIn is the biggest one.
And then I think referralsright so like after i help one
of my clients they typicallywant to refer me to their
friends because they have otherengineering friends with the
same problem or issue and solike those are really my two
main channels right linkedin andthen also referrals before that
it was you know when i would docareer coaching for like google
(04:04):
or if i would do careercoaching for like i did career
coaching for carrot as wellright and so like when i would
come across those communitiesright they're like hey i like
what chaz is talking about andso they They'll reach out to me
outside of the community andthen they'll want to work with
me.
Rexhen Doda (04:19):
Cool.
And so when thinking aboutLinkedIn as being one of the
main channels and thenreferrals, is there some sort of
strategy you're utilizing onLinkedIn to get some traction?
Chaz Flood (04:29):
Not yet.
So now I'm starting to likereally launch and pretty much
tell people about my services,right?
So now I'm starting to postonline.
I'm trying to build thattraction and build out my
content strategy.
But right now it's been like,I'll put a link.
for you to set up a 15 minutecall, consulting call.
And so people see my profile, they're interested, then they'll
(04:51):
click that link and then we'llset up a call.
And if it makes sense, then, you know, they become my
customer.
And so that's what I've beendoing in the past.
I think now I'm going to have alittle bit more, more of a
process,
Rexhen Doda (05:02):
um,
Chaz Flood (05:03):
help filter them
into, into my world.
Rexhen Doda (05:06):
Cool.
Great.
And so where, how do you seeyour business in the next, like
looking into the future for thenext one to three years?
Do you have some specific goalsyou're working towards?
Chaz Flood (05:17):
Yeah.
I mean, in three years, if Idon't have a seven figure
business, then, you know, Ididn't write, right.
That's the way I look at it.
Obviously that's just a goal.
Um, but, but essentially Iwould like it to be, uh, you
know, a seven figure business,um, coaching and, and, and kind
of bringing more of a advisoryservice to it, right.
Advisory level where I'madvising my clients to, you
(05:40):
know, do different career pivotsor make, make their career
careers you know, take them towhere they want to be.
And so, um, within three years, that's where I want to be.
It could evolve.
Um, but that's kind of where Isee myself.
Rexhen Doda (05:52):
It makes a lot of
sense.
And I do like that you'redriven towards also like to a
higher revenue, but also itmeans a lot of impact as well
in, in the people that are goingto be working with.
So right now, what are someinvestments?
And this goes back to thatresearch I was mentioning.
What are some investments thatyou've done throughout your
(06:13):
experience of doing this rightnow separately and maybe even
before that you feel like eitherwere good investments that you
learned a lot from or got a goodreturn from, or there are also
investments that you feel like,ah, maybe I shouldn't have
invested on that one.
Like investments that you don'tfeel so good about throughout
your experience as a coach, notjust with independent clients.
Chaz Flood (06:32):
Definitely.
Yeah.
That's a great question.
Um, the way I, I felt likeanything I, I invest in, uh,
there's always our ROI.
Um, it just depends on howmuch, right.
And so like, A few things thatI have done that I think has
paid dividends is when I firststarted getting into coaching
and started like really coachingclients, I was like, I went to
(06:54):
a conference from Park.
And that's like a, that's likea organization for resume
writers and career coaches.
And it's pretty popular.
And, you know, I went to aconference, you know, went to
one of the conferences and like,it hit me that, you know, I
never thought about resumes.
Right.
But when I was coaching, that'swhat every engineer asked me.
(07:14):
me about is like help me withmy resume and so I just I went
to that conference and I thinkit changed the way I thought
about resumes and like I end uppursuing becoming a certified
resume writer so like I wasalready doing the resume writing
for tech professionals but thenI was like I don't I just
pursue an actual certificationand make it official and so I
(07:34):
did that then I continue to dolike different certifications
like they have like a build yourbusiness course and I did that
that helped me a lot kind of bemore get more clarity around
this industry.
I mean, what it means to be acareer coach.
And so that, that paid a lot ofdividends.
I will say recently I'mwrapping up another
certification for mastering jobsearch.
And so that's going to be ledby, um, their own, um, Angie.
(07:59):
And so she, she had this, uh,program.
And so that opened my eyes alot.
There are other, um,communities or programs that I'm
a part of that really enjoy islike just business, right?
So I like Alex Hamosi stuff.
I do like a guy named Dan Cole.
Um, so I have subscribed to acouple of his, his, uh,
community and his, hisnewsletter.
(08:19):
And like that actually openedup a lot of like, gave me a lot
of aha moments, right.
As like a business person, marketing, understanding how to
communicate.
And so like I've invested inthat.
And then I'm also started toinvest into like a writing
course.
I know it sounds crazy.
It's all over the place, butlike a writing course, um, it's
an article writing course, thetoughest one in the world.
(08:40):
And so I invested in that so Icould start to actually build
trust.
and relationship and kind ofshare my thoughts, right?
And how I see things
Rexhen Doda (08:49):
as
Chaz Flood (08:49):
a recruiter and as a
career coach, right?
And combining those two things.
And so I think those are likethe main ones.
I did also invest in like RamitSethi's course.
Like he had a couple coursesand I did invest in that as
well.
And that really helped me tostart to shape the way I kind of
think about business and theway I think about like career
coaching and
Rexhen Doda (09:09):
job search.
Cool.
Thank you.
Thanks so much for sharing allof these.
And so right now when thinkingabout your goal of of like
further scaling your businesswhere do you see the challenge
right now what is the challengeright now you're trying to solve
for next let's say short term
Chaz Flood (09:26):
yeah short term is
like well there's only two
businesses i mean two sides of aproblem that i need to solve is
it's either demand or supplyright so right now it's demand
side so in the short termbasically over the next 30 days
or 90 days it's like justfocusing on like um building an
eye audience and really kind oflike just letting people know
(09:47):
about my services, right?
Like no one knows about it.
So let me start sharing myservices and like start building
demand.
And that's through LinkedIn andusing social media to kind of
share my thoughts and start tobuild out a
Rexhen Doda (10:01):
client acquisition
system.
Cool.
Yeah, it makes sense.
It makes sense where you'refocusing right now, especially
in your beginning.
It makes a lot of sense tostart there.
And right now for other coacheswho are listening that also
want to scale their impact, justlike you do.
What advice would you give tothese coaches if there's any
final advice to give to them?
That's a good question.
(10:22):
It could be an advice you giveto yourself, essentially, since
you're also trying to scale yourimpact.
Yeah, I think trust yourinstincts,
Chaz Flood (10:31):
right?
I think, like, just getstarted, number one, right?
Like, I call this version 1.0thinking.
It's like, for a I'm one ofthose people who think a lot and
like, what's the perfect nicheor what's the perfect this and
like, how do I get everythinglined up perfectly?
And then I'm like, what'sversion 1.0, right?
Like, how do I get 1.0 outthere?
(10:51):
Like, it doesn't have to beperfect.
It just needs to get out there.
And so like, you have ideas, like trust your instincts,
right?
If you feel like you need toshift what you're doing to fit
your lifestyle and kind of whoyou want to serve, like, like do
that, right?
Like take, take some time tolike really like evaluate
yourself And in some cases, youknow, hire a coach, right?
(11:12):
Hire a coach.
Coaches need coaches too.
And so, like, being able to putyourself out there and be
vulnerable and kind of getyourself into, like, different
communities, like, I think thathas been a game changer for me.
And, like, just never stopping,right?
Because I think a lot, and I'msure a lot of coaches, we
overthink and we want theperfect solution and we want to
(11:35):
make sure our business justgrows.
But, like, it starts with us.
It starts with our self-care.
And it also starts with usreally knowing who do we want to
serve?
And then once we have an idea, just do version 1.0 shipping,
right?
Just get it out there and getfeedback from the market.
Rexhen Doda (11:51):
Thank you.
Thank you.
Thank you so much, Chaz.
Thank you for the amazingadvice.
And thank you so much forcoming to our podcast today.

go into LinkedIn, look upChazman Flood.

They can also, I believe, ifthey wanted to, there's a link
for them to book an appointmentthere directly.
Is there any other way peoplecould connect with you or reach
(12:13):
out to you?
Chaz Flood (12:14):
Yeah.
I would say right now, if youwant to, I'm just launching this
now is I just created the techresume playbook.
Right.
And so like you want to, like,I will always say, go there, you
know, buy the, buy theplaybook.
And like, there's ways to kindof connect with me even on a
deeper level.
And so like, feel free to dothat.
But the best two ways isLinkedIn or just go to tech
(12:37):
resume playbook, buy it.
And then you'll, you'll, beable to go to the next step and
kind of learn more.
Rexhen Doda (12:41):
Cool.
Thank you.
Thank you so much, Chaz.
Thank you so much for coming.
It was a pleasure to have youon the show.
Davis Ngyuyen (12:46):
