Catalyst: A Podcast of Thought

Welcome to Catalyst, a podcast of thought. I'm Dr G, an executive coach, trained ethnographer, and nonfiction nerd. I read varied forms of nonfiction, from books to articles to research papers. I highlight ideas, annotate in the margins, and write index cards in cursive. It's really that bad. I even have a cute little wooden box to place them all in. Essentially, I read, think, and write about things of interest to me, and hopefully to you. Then I talk about them in each episode of Catalyst. Thank you for your continued and recent engagement.

In this episode of Catalyst,
I dive into the philosophical and practical aspects of personal growth. I explore the idea of “unbecoming” by synthesizing the work of Dr. Peter Attia and author Olga Khazan, offering a powerful, two-part strategy for self-reinvention. In this episode you will learn how to combine an internal shift in perspective with deliberate, outward behavior to become the person you were always meant to be.

In this episode, we’re exploring the transformative power of shifting from a mindset of doing to a practice of being. Drawing on insights from Dr. Peter Attia, we discussed how mindfulness and conscious, value driven actions can help us overcome suffering rooted in our own thoughts. We’ll explore the idea that true fulfillment isn’t about what we accomplish, but about shedding what we are not, to reveal who we are meant to be.

In this episode, I explore a powerful paradox touted from the ages of Aesop to Attia: true longevity isn’t about explosive effort, but the slow and steady work of building a foundation showing us how going slower can make us stronger.

    Cardiac Cowboys

The heart was always off-limits to surgeons. Cutting into it spelled instant death for the patient. That is, until a ragtag group of doctors scattered across the Midwest and Texas decided to throw out the rule book. Working in makeshift laboratories and home garages, using medical devices made from scavenged machine parts and beer tubes, these men and women invented the field of open heart surgery. Odds are, someone you know is alive because of them. So why has history left them behind? Presented by Chris Pine, CARDIAC COWBOYS tells the gripping true story behind the birth of heart surgery, and the young, Greatest Generation doctors who made it happen. For years, they competed and feuded, racing to be the first, the best, and the most prolific. Some appeared on the cover of Time Magazine, operated on kings and advised presidents. Others ended up disgraced, penniless, and convicted of felonies. Together, they ignited a revolution in medicine, and changed the world.
