(00:03):
Hello, this is Angie Burns, the owner and publisher of Allen City
Lifestyle, and welcome to the Allen City Lifestyle Podcast.
On our podcast, we celebrate the positive, supportive, and
inclusive contributions of local businesses, organizations, and
individuals making an impact on our community.
We like to celebrate all of the amazing things that are going on in
(00:24):
Allen, Fairview, Lucas, and Parker, and share them with our
listeners so that you know the best in class businesses, the
organizations making a difference in our community, and the
individuals who are making an
impact on our residents here in our area.
Hello, and welcome to City Lifestyle with Angie Burns.
I am here today with some of our wonderful partners from the
(00:47):
Aspenwood Company, and they are here to talk to us today about
their properties that they have here in Plano and McKinney, the
village on the park, which are beautiful senior living communities
that we're gonna get into more details about.
But we have with us today the Vice President of Operations and the
Senior Regional Vice President of Sales.
(01:07):
So go ahead and introduce
yourselves, and then we'll get right to it.
I am Anna Callender, and the Vice
President of Operations with the Aspenwood Company.
I've been in the industry for almost 20 years, and with the
Aspenwood Company for two and a half years.
Great, well, welcome to our podcast.
Thank you.
Hi, Angie.
Hi.
I'm Joshua Bentley.
(01:27):
I'm the Senior Regional Vice
President of Sales for the Aspenwood Company.
I've been in the industry for 10
years now, and with Aspenwood for two.
Well, fantastic.
Sounds like you guys really know what you're
doing when it comes to the senior living community.
So we're gonna just dive right in, and we're gonna talk about what
type of community Aspenwood Company runs here locally.
(01:48):
So within our Dallas-Fort Worth area,
you have three locations, is that correct?
We actually have a total of five.
Where are the other ones?
We know McKinney and Plano because they are our partners, but what
are the other ones that are local?
Yeah, most definitely.
So we have two in our McKinney market.
We have one over in Denton.
We have one in Plano, and we have one in Bedford as well.
(02:08):
Okay, Denton and Bedford.
All right, so those aren't too far of a stretch from us.
And what kind of communities are they?
Because I know a lot of people don't understand the difference
between senior living, assisted living, independent living.
There's all sorts of levels, memory, care.
So tell us a little bit where your expertise
lies and what kind of communities you offer.
(02:29):
Absolutely.
When you look at McKinney and Plano in this area specifically, we
specialize in assisted living and memory care.
And what that looks like is people are able to live within our
community in a beautifully appointed
apartment in a rather elegant type of atmosphere.
And they're able to have supportive services as well as programming
(02:52):
and relationships and all kinds of fun things to do within the
community in the assisted living section of our community.
We also have our Parkside neighborhood, which is for memory care.
And that area we specialize in those that may have some type of
dementia, such as Alzheimer's or Lewy Body, Parkinson's, the
different types of memory impairment, but
(03:15):
people are able to enjoy life to their fullest.
They're able to live life well with us.
It is a luxury apartment.
I've seen the campuses and they are absolutely beautiful.
So tell me a little bit more about the attention to detail that you
put on the amenities and the culture within the Aspenwood Company.
And I know that you guys really focus on providing quality care all
(03:39):
the way from the top to the bottom.
So you guys are very big on the culture of showing a loving
environment to everyone, staff included.
So tell us a little bit more about Aspenwood Company and your
approach to living the luxury lifestyle.
Absolutely.
And one of the first things that
we start with is our relationships.
And that's relationships with our staff
(04:00):
members, our family members, and the residents.
And everything starts with great communication
with our residents, our family, and our staff.
And it's making sure that we have those partnerships and
understanding what's important to the families, what's important to
the resident, so we can provide that
individualized need and that individualized want.
(04:20):
Nobody ever moves into a community for a set of rules.
People move in because they want choice and because people want
that ability to be empowered to make decisions.
So at our communities, we make sure that we
have a touch of class with everything that we do.
When you walk in through our
doors, you'll be greeted by a concierge.
We have our dining culinary experience, which we have separate
(04:42):
dining staff that actually wait on our
residents and our family members that dine with us.
And then moving through our community, we have different programs
and they could go anywhere or do anything from museums to different
culture and diversity type of programs within our community.
But what we really try and do is listen to our residents and our
families to understand what it is that they're interested in.
(05:05):
So when you have the experience in our communities, it really is a
beautiful place to live, but even more
beautiful people to work and be beside.
We have more fantastic information coming your way, so stay with us
because City Lifestyle with Angie Burns will be right back.
At City Lifestyle, we only partner with best in class businesses.
(05:26):
And a lot of times people will ask me, well, what does that mean?
We do a very rigorous vetting process for anyone
who is allowed to advertise in our publications.
We only partner with people who are four and five star businesses
and who have great reviews with Better Business Bureau, have all of
their licenses and certifications up to date.
We wanna make sure that our readers and listeners are only being
(05:49):
recommended businesses who are going to go above and beyond, so you
know you are getting a best in class business.
So tell us a little bit more from the work side of things with the
culture of the company and how you approach that.
Absolutely, and Angie, what I would say is, when you think about
healthcare, it's such a ranging environment where we have that
(06:09):
typical mold of, if I go to a
hospital, I'm treated like I'm a patient.
I'm treated like another number, but with the Aspenwood company, we
really wanna deter that myth of what
senior living has been and what it needs to be.
And people really do matter most.
People have to come first.
If a person isn't felt like they are still a
person, then that dignity is gone at the door.
(06:32):
And so what we consider is not just from an employee standpoint,
but also from a resident point of view is, who is your mom?
If you're truly looking to make a move, how can we support her?
She still has a story to tell.
And so as Anna mentioned, we have so many vibrant things happening
in our community, but it's not just about satisfying a checkbox.
(06:52):
It's about saying, if mom's a ballerina, mom's still a ballerina.
Oh, I love that.
And that's what's missed so much in healthcare of, I've gotta
ensure that healthcare services are rendered,
and we certainly can take care of those things.
But it's so much more of that holistic approach, living life well
in our communities, and ensuring that our residents are well cared
for, but still have a purpose each and every day.
(07:15):
Oh, that is beautiful.
That's really, you don't find that very often nowadays.
Nowadays it is the checking of the boxes type of thing.
So if somebody is looking for a community to place their loved one
in, how do you know when it's time?
How do you know what boxes you should put on that card of making
sure, what questions should someone be
(07:35):
asking when they're coming in for a tour?
Because a lot of us, this is unknown territory.
We've never had to do it before.
So what are we looking for or should we be looking for when we are
seeking out a new home for our loved one?
Absolutely, and I think one of the first things that comes to mind
when you ask that question, Angie, is in the 10 years that I've
been in this industry, doing senior living sales, and oftentimes
(07:58):
that word sales is something really scary.
It's scary, yes.
You know, the role of our team members is to be that advisor.
In that advisory standpoint, how can we support you better so that
you don't feel like you're
overwhelmed and that you're all in this alone?
Because many people are in that same boat, but for us, what we look
for is how can we truly learn about who mom is?
(08:19):
How can we truly identify the support that you need the most so we
can satisfy and really help to
ensure that this is a seamless transition?
You know, when you think about someone looking at a community
setting like this, most people don't wake up and say, I'm gonna go
call the next assisted living place.
There's usually a reason, there's usually a need that sparked, and
unfortunately, it's typically medical.
(08:41):
And so what I would say in hundreds of families that we've worked
through, it's not waiting too long because some of the best things
that we can provide to a resident of our community are often missed
out on when we get past the point of being able to enjoy life, but
having to respond to life instead.
And so what I would ask anyone that's listening, watching, anyone
(09:02):
that inquires with us is consider what the impact can be to still
spark that joy again, because loneliness is actually one of the
biggest reasons why individuals go through life quicker.
And unfortunately, when we consider loneliness as that stopgap of
giving mom that purpose again, we have to think about what could be
(09:22):
that check of the box for her to make
her feel like she has someone to relate to.
And that doesn't have to be on an intimate level.
It's more of that person to person touch of I also did that in
life, and now I have more relatability there as well.
Absolutely, so let's touch on that a
little bit about the community aspect.
So you have programming where your residents can get together and
(09:45):
play games or take classes or go on excursion type of adventures.
Do you have opportunities for the
community to come in and volunteer or provide?
I know that happens a lot in the nursing home setting, and this is
a little different than that, but is there still an opportunity for
people, businesses, organizations, or individuals that want to come
(10:06):
in and work with your residents to do that and how do they go about
doing that if there is that opportunity?
Yes, there is very much so.
And it's interesting because to your point, a lot of persons think
that nursing homes is where people come in to provide care or
services and don't realize that they can
just come in and help with pet therapy.
They could come in and they can participate in
(10:27):
other events that we have within the community.
We had game night the other night and residents and families were
there and joined by volunteers that were hosting some of the games
and prizes and announcing some of those fun things that we do.
So there's all kinds of things that volunteers
can do if they want to come and spend time with us.
And what they would do is they would come into our community and
(10:48):
meet with our director of life enrichment, and they would have an
application that they would fill out and information with an
interview, and we'd move forward and
try to find that right fit for the person.
Because at the end of the day, if you're enjoying the program, the
residents are enjoying the program.
And we'll try and find those things that you enjoy or that person
enjoys to be able to engage with a resident.
(11:09):
So then we make sure that somebody has
a good experience for the both of you.
Stay tuned.
We will be right back with City Lifestyle
with Angie Burns after these short announcements.
Thank you for tuning into City Lifestyle with Angie Burns.

(11:53):
us to come out to your neighborhood.
We typically serve our neighborhood for block parties during the
months of May, June, July, and October for trunk or treats.
So reach out to us at Angie, A-N-G-I, dot, Burns, at
citylifestyle.com to book your City Lifestyle block party today.
(12:17):
I love that you've mentioned, if your mom's a ballerina, because my
daughter's actually in school to be a dance therapist.
Yes. And her internship this summer is going into different locations
and providing dance therapy
classes, Pilates yoga, dance type things.
So I love that you guys embrace that type of environment and
allowing for your residents to have different, whatever it feeds
(12:38):
their soul, is still available to them.
That's fantastic.
So if somebody wants to schedule a tour to come and check out one
of your properties, what's the best way to do that?
Absolutely.
So we have team members in place to take those calls today.
And it's more of that consultative approach of what is going on,
how can we help, and truly who is that person?
(12:58):
And what we would ask is our local communities, Village on the
Park, McKinney, Stonebridge Ranch, Plano, Denton, that our teams
are giving that opportunity to just
take that phone call and start that search.
It doesn't take any time more than
just what someone wants to give it.
And it doesn't cost anything to go through that process just to
learn more, step inside the front door
(13:19):
of our community, see what life is like.
I think oftentimes people have that stigma associated with it, but
walking through the front door and being embraced by a loving, warm
approach where trust is the foundation, that's really what we want
someone to see and feel and believe when they
hear us on the phone or walk through our communities.
That's fantastic.
So what are the contacts for getting a hold of you?
(13:42):
Where can they call?
What email website?
What is the best way to contact you to start that process?
Absolutely.
So the aspenwoodcompany.com is our website that holds not just
those five communities, but our other 15 within the portfolio.
So you can certainly find information there.
Also reaching out to our home office team directly at 713-3528000.
(14:03):
I'm so glad that you got your phone number, right?
I know we were worried about that.
That's okay.
(Laughing) It's another great way for us to have
our teams get in contact with those individuals.
And then also our local community teams are available as well
villageontheparkmckinney.com and so on
for each of the locations specifically.
Okay.
Is there anything else you would like our listeners or viewers to
(14:24):
know about your community, your company, or anything in particular?
Do you have a final word?
Final thought?
I know I put you on the spot.
(Laughing) That's a good question.
You know, what I often am asked is why the aspenwoodcompany.
Okay.
There are hundreds, thousands of providers out there.
And I think it's people.
(14:46):
Yeah.
People matter most.
Yeah.
And that's what we want to ensure that
everyone feels and senses from the top down.
Heather testing our president all the way to every single team
member that works in our communities.
And we really want those individuals to feel that warmth and
embrace that we're going to put them first and that we're going to
have those good results that come
afterwards because of the work that we do each day.
(15:07):
So I love that you answered your why aspenwood.
So now I'm gonna turn this over to Anna.
Yes.
What is your why in working for the aspenwood for so long since
you've been with them for two decades now?
Well, I would say we make a difference every day.
And at the end of the day, I think we can all go home and it
doesn't matter what community that you're
in that you really impacted somebody's life.
(15:28):
And at the end of the day, that's that part and that piece that
brings people into senior housing to do what they do.
And when you get a glimpse of seeing somebody at their best that
truly is what makes senior housing and what we do special.
Oh, well, thank you guys so much for being a part of our community.
Thank you so much for being a partner
